At Ideal-LIVING, we just finished traveling to destinations around the Northeast and Midwest bringing developers and communities to meet with boomers at our Ideal-LIVING Resort and Retirement Real Estate Shows and encourage them to take advantage of Spring Travel to find their ideal destination, life, and home. However, at the end of this season, our beloved show manager is set to join the ranks of retirement. Alan Lipka has regaled many show attendees with his unique “Choose Your Ideal Lifestyle” seminar, sharing his advice for a successful retirement, so I thought it only fitting to ask Alan to share his final thoughts about his own journey for retirement with you. Alan, you will be missed.

Dear Readers –

Some of you will recognize me as the seminar speaker at our Real Estate Shows, but for most of you, I am probably not anyone you know. I am Alan Lipka, the organizational mastermind who plans and manages the Shows. My responsibility has been to make sure that when you come to a Show, you get the best possible experience as you meet face-to-face with communities and developers. For the last 17 years, this has been my labor of love.

The time has come, however, to move on. I am being accused of “retiring.” But, in all honesty, I am not retiring at all — I am just beginning!

Age and life experience have given me a valuable and evolving perspective on how I want to spend my new found free time. I have a lot of ideas about how I want to do this. There is certainly going to be time enough for all of the recreational activities I have looked forward to and dreamed about. What I am looking forward to most, however, is the time I will be able to devote to developing and deepening my relationships with my wife, my children, my grandchildren, and so many others.

Looking back, it has been my good fortune to have had not just one but three successful careers. I am financially secure and enjoy reasonably good health. Given these blessings, I am looking forward to being happy. I have come to realize it is only with supportive, loving relationships that I will be able to enjoy my life, to actually be happy. And, isn’t that what we all long for? Being happy?

Ideal-LIVING is not just the name of a magazine. Living an ideal life is something we create for ourselves. It is having the courage to understand that we alone are the masters of our lives. It is being able to choose how we spend our timeand money. These are the true indicators of our personal IDEAL.

So, don’t be afraid to explore new worlds, seek out new civilizations, to go boldly where you have never gone before. You have nothing to lose, and the world needs you so much.

Live long, and prosper.

Black Creek

Chattanooga, TN

Set in an upland valley near the “Grand Canyon of the Tennessee River” and just eight miles southwest of downtown Chattanooga, Black Creek is a 3,000-acre residential community that combines a serene countryside ambiance with nearby “Scenic City” conveniences.

Acclaimed architect Brian Silva created a classic links-style golf course for Black Creek Club, allowing the land’s natural contours to shape his award-winning highland layout. Additional amenities include a complete fitness center, sauna, and tennis courts, plus a clubhouse lounge and dining rooms. An outdoor sports complex, walking trails, and fishing ponds are located within the Black Creek community, while popular sites for rock climbing, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and horseback riding are found throughout the immediate area.

New homes in Black Creek can be custom designed to accommodate each buyer’s specific needs inside and feature natural building materials outside in a community committed to the highest environmental standards. Shepherds Cove Shepherdstown, WV

To say that Shepherds Cove is a one-of-a-kind community is more than a mild understatement. Certainly, its location in the Shenandoah Highlands of West Virginia along the upper reaches of the Potomac River is a distinguishing feature. And, the fact that the community is planned for only 20 homes is unusual. But, what really sets Shepherds Cove apart is the size of its homesites—five acres each. That’s right: five acres of your own woodlands, meadows, creeks, and the kind of peace and quiet that’s only possible when your next-door neighbors are half a mile down the road.

All of the utility lines are buried for unobstructed views and every Shepherds Cove residence is specially designed by preferred builders Hobday Custom Homes and Kevin Perdue Homes. Construct an estate-size mansion for the entire extended family, a secluded vacation retreat, or a spacious log cabin—the choice is yours.

Shepherds Cove amenities include a 23-acre common area on the water with boat docks and kayak launches that afford private access to 12 miles of navigable river. The community pavilion overlooking the Potomac has an outdoor kitchen and there are meandering hiking/biking paths within and just beyond the gates.

Supermarkets and stores are a 12-minute drive away, and the immediate area includes mountain golf courses, wineries, mineral springs, historic sites, ski resorts, and access to the Appalachian Trail. All are available for Shepherds Cove residents whenever they might need a break from their five acres of paradise.

Lucero Boquete, Panama

Located in the Panamanian highlands just across the border from Costa Rica, Lucero is an emerging international community where “green living” is more than just a marketing slogan: All of the homesites are on reclaimed pastureland to minimize tree removal. Solar panel rooftops generate pollution-free electricity. Rainwater is collected for irrigation, and chemical use is restricted to protect the surrounding tropical farms that produce coffee, fruits, and vegetables.

The featured amenity at Lucero is its stunning centerpiece golf course by designer Michael Poellot. Spectacular views might be expected on Panama’s highest-elevation course, but the quality of play on the layout’s manicured bent grass tees, fairways, and greens is a delightful revelation. Among the other highlights at Lucero are its infinity pool and hot tub, clay courts at the tennis club, and fine dining at the Seasons Restaurant with farm-totable freshness always on the menu. An on-site hotel, spa, and fitness center are in the works at Lucero.

Private Lucero homesites of up to 2.4 acres with expansive views are now available. Single-family homes, golf villas, and spacious condominiums are also offered that can be used as year-round residences or seasonal retreats.

Surrounding the Lucero community is the 500,000-acre Amistad National Park with hot springs and hiking trails that are world-class experiences. In addition to shopping in the nearby town of Boquete, the provincial capital of David features medical services with American-trained doctors and an international airport with short daily flights to Panama City and beyond.

Boomers on the Move

Retiree Migration Patterns

Retirees continue long-established migration patterns to relocate from colder weather and high-tax states. They often flee to states with warmer climates and a better quality of life, as well as lower taxes. Each winter at the Ideal-LIVING Resort & Retirement Shows, we survey attendees to determine their preferences for finding their ideal destination. In addition to our surveys, we extrapolate data from other national sources that track migration patterns, including the United Van Lines Annual National Movers Study that confirmed the baby boomer generation moved more than any other age group last year and accounted for more than 45% of all inbound United Van Lines moves in 2019. And, for the second consecutive year, the study found that more residents moved out of New Jersey than any other state.

2019 UNITED VAN LINES NATIONAL MOVERS STUDY

The United Van Lines’ study confirms the mass exodus from Northeastern states such as New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut were among the top 10 outbound states for the fifth consecutive year as were the midwestern states of Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, and Michigan. At the same time, California has both the second-highest inbound and outbound moves. As Baby Boomers relocate to warmer destinations in the southern and western regions, the top reasons as cited by the study were for retirement or a new job/company transfer.

MASTER-PLANNED COMMUNITIES OF 2019

Ideal-Living tracks moves through the U.S. Postal Service’s National Change of Address. The top five states Ideal-LIVING readers moved from in 2019 were New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, and Illinois, and the top five they moved to were Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.

TOP REASONS IDEAL-LIVING READERS RELOCATE

These numbers slightly changed from 2018 where moving to reduce property taxes topped out at 89%. Although the winter weather was milder in the northeast and midwest in 2020, it’s still a driving force for improving baby boomers' quality of life. They no longer want to shovel snow and want to be active outdoors year-round, if possible.

With mortgage rates back down below 4%, a strong economy, and home sales being the highest they have been since 2007, retirees are finding their ideal homes in master-planned communities. RCLCO tracks sales in master-planned communities, and the market is booming. The top 50 master-planned communities sold over 30,000 homes (a 9% increase over 2018). The Villages took the top spot, followed by Lakewood Ranch in the second spot.

Townhomes and higher densities with smaller homes are on the rise in popularity. But, what boomers really want is exceptional amenities, like cutting edge health and wellness facilities with lifestyle components that offer diverse home types and price points.

*Note that property taxes vary by county, and a higher number for a state does not indicate that all counties within the state have a high property tax rate.

According to ideal-LIVING readers, they are most concerned with having quality healthcare nearby, and approximately half of the respondents want to live in a 55+ active adult community near water. The top requested amenity has remained the same since we began asking the question: over 80% of respondents want walking trails, and they are in luck as most master-planned amenity communities have them. The other top requested amenities include wellness/ fitness centers (75%), dining options (67%), social clubs (60%), and swimming pools (58%).

The top items ideal-LIVING readers want for their new home are first-floor living (86%), maintenance-free living (66%), and a large, open kitchen (65%). Outdoor living spaces are essential to this generation as well.

Master-planned amenity communities overwhelmingly meet the desires of the retiring boomer population who want an active lifestyle in a warmer climate with lower taxes and cost-of-living. The future for master-planned communities remains bright, and the migration patterns to new locations that cater to the retiree market should strengthen over the next decade.

Why Ecuador?

One of the most biodiverse places on the planet

There is much to say about taking a late life adventure, cashing in on a North American lifestyle, and moving abroad. If it is affordable, safe, and brings a new understanding, many feel the lure to pack up and relocate abroad. But where? The world is a huge place with many attractive, welcoming countries vying for expatriates who can add to their country's status and wealth.

About eight years ago, my family and I moved to Cuenca, Ecuador, a city high in the Andes Mountains, where we enjoyed an extraordinary life experience.

Favorable Cost of Living

Though much has changed in the ensuing years, Ecuador remains in the top tier of affordable and desirable relocations for American expats. Healthcare, housing, food, gasoline, and other commodity prices are still very favorable compared to the U.S. As a result, there has been no decrease in the number of expats moving to or investing in homes in Ecuador. A residency visa is inexpensive and relatively easy to obtain when using expert help. This is another major advantage compared to numerous other countries.

Almost everything an expat might need, or is familiar with, is available. American and other foreign products are for sale, but at a higher price compared to similar and less expensive Ecuadorian products. Some of the exceptions are electronics and automobiles that are imported at a considerably higher cost. There are supermarkets and malls, but most expats satisfy their daily needs at the small "mom and Pop" stores called tiendas that are on every block.

Ecuador remains mostly a cash society and uses the U.S. dollar. This removes currency fluctuations as a challenging factor. Banking is seamless with ATMs connecting to American banks, which allows easy cash withdrawals. But don’t worry, most places

accept credit cards. Large banks offer expected services and have English-speaking employees who can solve almost any international banking issue.

And, the internet, Wi-Fi, and cell phones are available nearly everywhere.

Biodiversity and the Perfect Climate

As one of the most biodiverse places in the world, Ecuador offers endless attractions from the warm, sunny beaches of the Pacific to the Amazon rainforest and mountain villages in the Andes, not to mention the Galapagos Islands offshore.

Throughout the country, the seasons are wet and dry, not the cold or hot seasons one is familiar with up north. The range of temperature is small and usually quite constant. Because the weather is like spring, yearround air conditioning or heating units often don’t exist in homes. This is something expats find strange, but a real bonus economically.

Do I Need to Speak Spanish?

Spanish is the language. As time passes, more and more Ecuadorians speak English, but in day to day transactions, the use of even modest Spanish makes life easier. Many expats stumble through with a cursory stable of Spanish words. But, to enjoy the vibrancy of Ecuador, knowing how to speak Spanish makes all the difference. It is probably one of the easiest languages to learn, and it surrounds you night and day.

Do I Need a Car?

Owning a car isn’t necessary, but allows for exploration throughout the hinterlands. Stick shifts are the norm. Automatic shift cars are few and cost a premium. Government subsidies vary, but keep gasoline prices low. For some, owning an automobile can be a burden and a challenge. Another option exists as all of Ecuador is connected with a massive bus system that is used by almost everyone. As a mountainous country, flying is often quicker and easier than driving on winding, mountain roads.

Though South America seems like another planet to many, the major cities of Quito and Guayaquil have daily flights to almost all North American hubs. Local airlines connect most Ecuadorian towns with these big international airports. Roads are unusually good in comparison to many other countries and a thrilling challenge in the Andes.

Whether you choose a town high in the Andes or a living community on the Pacific seacoast, many aspects of life in Ecuador will be similar. There are high mountain cities, lush valleys, and unspoiled coastal land, all with their particular characteristics. Ecuador is a growing and maturing country in every way.

Boquete , Panama

Expat Community Thrives in Panama Mountains

As always, with an article about the prospects of living or owning property in an international destination, the question of why a potential expat should choose this island, country, or city above all others is paramount. Everyone has different tastes, financial considerations, and needs. The challenge for a prospective retiree is profound. Of the thousands of possibilities on our planet, there is a satisfying destination for everyone, a place to fill any person’s desires. Here, we investigate the unique characteristics of a community in the western mountains of Panama called Boquete (pronounced “Bow-ket-tay) and the possible reasons why a retiree might want to select it.

Over 6,000 expats have discovered this jewel and have bought rental properties or moved to Boquete over the last few decades. With an overall population

of around 20,000, it still retains a relaxed, smalltown feel. One of the big draws to a potential expat is the large American population, making English a commonly spoken language in the local stores, restaurants, and service sectors.

Nestled in the highlands of western Panama, Boquete is an excellent choice for expats looking for a simpler lifestyle. It has clean air, green jungle, friendly people, and a low cost of living. Small and walkable, the town of Boquete is an excellent choice to enjoy a different side of Panama compared to the bustle of Panama City or the heat of the Pacific beaches, which are only an hour away.

Since Boquete enjoys a cool, temperate climate, it draws not only expats, but many Panamanians looking for nearly ideal weather. Temperatures at this higher

elevation are generally in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit during the day. Nights are cooler. Not only does this provide spring-like conditions in a mountainous, hilly environment, but it’s perfect for growing rich, aromatic coffee and citrus fruits at fincas that dot the hillsides. There’s a range of rewards derived from the year-round spring-like weather, but possibly the most unusual for a northerner to appreciate is that a consistently mild climate means no heating or air conditioning bills. Another climate advantage is that, unlike many other tropical locations, there are no hurricanes.

Travelers fly domestic airlines from Panama City to the airport in David, where a four-lane highway leads to Boquete in 40 minutes. David is Panama’s thirdlargest city and the commercial hub in the region with many shopping options along with local government

offices and medical providers.

Boquete has both modern housing and traditional, brightly-painted wooden cabins speckling the hillsides. Although prices have risen in tandem with growing popularity, real estate in Boquete is still affordable. By eliminating the expense of heating and air conditioning, there is an immediate and major reduction in the overall cost of living. Additionally, many newer homes are exempt from property taxes for a number of years. Also, homeowner’s insurance is affordable, which is not the case in many other international locations.

One of the biggest benefits of living in Boquete is being able to take advantage of Panama’s Pensionado program, which is considered one of the best programs

A Stable, Progressive Nation

Of the numerous Central American countries, Panama has proven to be the most stable and progressive nation over the years. Slightly smaller than South Carolina and looking like a capital ‘S’ lying down, the country is strategically located on an isthmus that forms the land bridge connecting North and South America. Its most well-known asset is the 48-mile long Panama Canal that links the Caribbean with the Pacific Ocean, one of the most important shipping routes in the world. The Canal is so essential to world trade that it is almost off-limits to nations that compete in every other dimension. The peaceful transit of the world’s goods is crucial to everyone. Beyond all this, one of Panama´s strongest attractions is its diversity with beaches, mountains, numerous modern cities, and historic ruins, all contained in a narrow corridor from 60 to 110 miles wide.

of its kind in the world. Major discounts from 25 to 50 percent are available to Pensionados on flights, entertainment, public transportation, restaurants, electricity, telephone, and water bills.

Boquete is an outdoor enthusiast’s nirvana. The fit and healthy can go horseback riding on jungle trails, explore the Baru Volcano or the Quetzal jungle trail, go rafting, and even swim in the river gorges. There are zip lines to ride over the jungle or the challenge of a hair-raising stroll across one of the awesome hanging bridges over deep river chasms. For the less adventurous, Boquete is full of excellent restaurants, coffee cafes, and shopping tuned to the extensive expat community.

World-class, Panama City is the region’s financial and commercial hub and the capital of the country. With an urban population approaching a half million people, it is a glittering metropolis that rivals many U.S. and European cities. As a modern and sophisticated municipality, it boasts well-established international commerce, arts, fashion, nightlife, casinos, shopping, and limitless dining. It has even been referred to as the Miami of Latin America. The glittering glass skyscrapers are occupied by almost every international banking and financial entity that, in total, provide a good percentage of the world’s economy.

As cosmopolitan as the city is, a quick drive into the countryside takes a person into the other Panama of developing and thriving communities that not long ago were small isolated hamlets. Economic success has created an enviable physical infrastructure that includes modern hospitals, airports, and roads that are more highly developed than Panama's Central American neighbors. From one end of the country to the other, Panama is an exciting mix of modern skylines, surfer villages, retirement towns, cattle ranches, sleepy mountain hamlets, and charming colonial enclaves. What more could be asked for?

A fine example of this lifestyle is the Lucero Golf and Country Club near Boquete. It’s a sprawling community of modern homes offering a 15-year tax exemption for homeowners. The grounds of Lucero have impressive amenities, offering a luxurious 18-hole golf course, tennis, swimming, a community center, and lovely homes only 15 minutes from the town of Boquete. When asked why he chose the Lucero Golf and Country Club, one inhabitant, Jim Bondoux, said, "Once the road was paved, the excellent golf and the large community of friendly expats were just what we wanted.”

Lake Thurmond straddles the border between South Carolina and Georgia, where it’s still called Clarks Hill Lake. By any name, the reservoir is the third-largest man-made body of water east of the Mississippi and a popular recreational hub for boaters, water skiers, paddlers, and anglers. Surrounded by public beaches and campgrounds, lakeside destinations include 1,900-acre Mistletoe State Park and Hickory Knob State Resort Park, with a top-rated public golf course among its vacation amenities.

Lake Lure, North Carolina

Located 25 miles northeast of Asheville, Lake Lure has been a popular North Carolina vacation destination for more than 50 years. The big public beach includes a splash park and a waterslide into the lake. The surrounding conservation land is laced with trails for hiking and mountain biking. There’s also a nine-hole golf course and a toy train museum, plus lakeside cabins and cottages for romantic couples or the entire family.

Lake Lanier, Georgia

Created in 1956 as a reservoir to supply water for the city of Atlanta, Lake Lanier has become a major regional vacation destination. It’s the largest lake in Georgia with nearly 700 miles of shoreline that includes 45 public parks and 10 campgrounds, plus lakefront cabins, hotels, and an RV resort. Lake Keowee, South Carolina

Lake Keowee covers 18,000 acres in the Upstate South Carolina highlands, and its Christmas-tree shape means that there are hundreds of coves to explore by kayak. Fishing in the emerald blue waters is a year-round attraction, while the Keowee/Toxaway State Park on the lake’s northern end includes hiking trails to scenic waterfalls. The mountain towns of Salem, Walhalla, and Clemson are nearby day-trip destinations.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs is surrounded by the Ouachita Mountains and several popular state parks. Crystal-clear Lake Ouachita, a destination for sailors and other water-sports enthusiasts, as well as hikers on the 36-mile Vista Trail, is the largest freshwater body in Arkansas. Lake Catherine is renowned for its rainbow trout, bass, and bream fishing, while Lake Hamilton features resort-style accommodations, riverboat cruises, and the unique Garvan Woodland Gardens.

Great Salt Lake, Utah

Salt Lake City is a surprisingly diverse vacation destination that offers scenic hiking trails in lakeside wildlife refuges and nearby national forests. Along the surrounding mountain slopes are ski resorts and golf clubs for year-round recreation, while the downtown area features lively evenings in trendy restaurants, brew pubs, and wine bars.

Lake Naomi, Pennsylvania

Located in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, Lake Naomi has been a recreational destination since it was created in 1895. Because motorized watercraft are not allowed, the lake is a popular retreat for sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Lake Naomi Club is a family resort that features a nine-hole golf course, tennis complex, and fitness facilities, as well as an expansive lakeside activity center with indoor/outdoor pools, playgrounds, and a dog park.

Eastman Lake, New Hampshire

Eastman Lake—often called “Eastman Pond” by the locals—is a four-season vacation destination owned by the state of New Hampshire. Surrounded by hiking trails and fed by clean mountain streams, the lake features six public beaches, canoe/kayak launches, and plenty of fish in the water. The Eastman resort and residential community offer championship golf, tennis, and fitness amenities, plus cross-country skiing in the winter.

Year after year, the most requested community amenity is "Walking Trails." The overwhelming majority of planned developments throughout the U.S. and abroad have walking trails. Following are destinations known for the best walking and hiking vacations.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

There are more than 850 total miles of hiking trails within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that straddles the North Carolina-Tennessee border. Many circuits are under four miles in length and have been created specifically to showcase waterfalls and panoramic views. Longer and more strenuous hikes are also available, with trailhead shuttle services from Gatlinburg and other towns around the park.

Schuylkill River Trail, PA

The Schuylkill River Trail currently runs for about 75 miles through four counties in historic southeastern Pennsylvania. Most of the trail follows abandoned railway lines, recycling those corridors for a new generation of travelers. Long sections are paved for bicyclists, and the completed trail will eventually extend 120+ miles. There’s also the adjacent Schuylkill Water Trail with 18 designated sections for canoeists and kayakers.

Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, New Mexico

The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness in New Mexico offers five distinctive hiking trails from three to seven miles in length through some of the most otherworldly landscapes on the planet. Once an ancient seabed, the receding waters left amazing rock formations and mazelike canyons where prehistoric creatures once flourished. Guided tours are available, but camping isn’t permitted within this protected national wilderness.

Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina

A mile-high ecological preserve in western North Carolina, Grandfather Mountain offers day hikers and backpackers a variety of choices. Within Grandfather Mountain State Park are several walking trails that aren’t very strenuous but come alive with blossoms and birdsong in the springtime. More challenging are the 11 backcountry trails that reward hikers with panoramic mountaintop views.

Tallulah Gorge State Park, Georgia

Georgia’s Tallulah Gorge State Park is a natural wonderland with a variety of options for trailblazers of all ages: the Shortline Trail is a paved three-mile loop, the North and South Rim Trails feature scenic overlooks that include several waterfalls, and the 15mile Stoneplace Trail can be a challenge for both hikers and mountain bikers. A permit is required for the steep Gorge Floor Trail that descends into a pristine nature preserve.

Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Trailheads for hiking in the Hot Springs National Park are located within the city of Hot Springs, affording convenient access from hotels and attractions in that popular destination. The Hot Springs and North Mountain trails offer shorter walks with scenic views, while the West Mountain trails often feature wildlife sightings. The Sunset Trail is a 10-mile circuit that can extend to 17 miles on the park’s interconnected paths.

Foodies from coast-to-coast brag about having the best eats in their hometowns, and it’s time we all started paying attention. But, from covert taco joints to food halls chock-full of choices to awardwinning fine dining establishments—the sheer amount of buzz-worthy bites in these culinary-centric cities can seem overwhelming. That’s where we come in. We’ve chosen and dissected our picks for the top 10 best food cities in America.

Denver, Colorado

A permanent champion in the craft beer world (boasting a whopping number of breweries per capita), Denver also snags a spot as one of the U.S.' most desirable dining destinations. In addition to the steady wave of stellar restaurants, 2017 brought filming of the acclaimed Top Chef to the area. Start with anise-seed beignets at The Bindery and then swoon over Spanish tapas at Union Station’s Ultreia. Traveling with an indecisive eater? Zeppelin Station’s collection of innovative vendors offer superior snacks ranging from banh mi to fried chicken to gelato. For mind-blowing Mexican, pop over to Platt Park where Adelitas Cocina Y Cantina wins for wildest Taco Tuesday, and Uno Mas Taqueria y Cantina’s pozole will change your life.

Tampa, Florida

Tampa has been quietly arising as a seriously munchable metropolis, and sorry (not sorry) Floridians—your secret’s out. For starters, there’s the flood of family-friendly food halls (like waterfront Sparkman Wharf and Armature Works) that offer customers countless options for getting their grub on. In south Tampa, the Epicurean (a food hotel—yes, you read that right) is a self-proclaimed “foodie’s paradise come to life.” Historic Ybor City is swamped (no pun intended) with reliable eateries like off-the-beatenpath El Puerto and The Columbia Restaurant that opened in, wait for it, 1905. If that didn’t convince you to add Tampa to your list of upcoming foodbased getaways, you’re on the wrong page.

Honolulu, Hawaii

Sure, Honolulu has double rainbows, epic surf, and infinitely gorgeous weather. But, you haven’t truly experienced paradise until you’ve slurped The Pig and The Lady’s star anise-scented pho broth. This diverse island offers a plethora of gourmet specialty food shops and markets—and that’s only the beginning. The restaurant scene has recently shifted with chefs stepping into an era of tweaking traditional Hawaiian fare with a rustic spin. For the latest upand-comers, trendy neighborhoods like Kaimuki and brewery-heavy Kaka’ako (don’t miss farm-to-table Merriman’s) are on everyone’s lips. Opal Thai Food is still a divine Chinatown staple, and lavish newcomer Mugen in Waikiki is getting all the hype.

Charleston, South Carolina

This celebrated coastal food capital is esteemed for its ability to extract anything and everything edible from the surrounding land and seas. The diverse history and multicolored architecture may draw the tourists in. Still, it’s the bountiful seafood, extraordinary seasonal produce, and legendary lowcountry wizards (lookin’ at you, Sean Brock) that convince them to surrender to the South and stay awhile. Upscale bistro FIG and Brock’s righteously revered Husk are no-brainers, and newcomers include Chinese-American hot spot Jackrabbit Filly and dinerinspired Big Bad Breakfast. Still hungry? Hop over to King Street’s Edmund’s Oast for an American sour ale and wood-fired pizza with clams, salami, and garlic butter.

Asheville, North Carolina

Undoubtedly, one of America’s most honored hubs for all-things food and beer, Asheville is quickly creeping up on Disneyland’s title of happiest place on earth. Cúrate, Katie Button’s nationally-acclaimed tapas haven, is an undeniable show-stopper. Hit the South Slope for brewery bliss where Bhramari bangs out eccentric libations (like Girl Scout Cookie-infused stouts) and eclectic eats. Next, Buxton Hall for ethereal BBQ, then Sierra Nevada for duck fat fries with Pale Ale raspberry mustard that are just as impressive as the facility’s tour. For dinner, splurge at Cucina 24, Nine Mile for veg-friendly Caribbean, or Rhubarb where you’ll want to sit at the chef’s bar and get lost inside the gooey goat cheese burrata.

Portland, Oregon

You’ll be hard-pressed to find an assemblage of America’s finest food meccas that doesn’t include this one. Portland is a medley of magnificent chefs (like Ataula’s José Chesa) using the city—and its inquisitive diners—as a blank canvas for their originality. Also famed for its affordability, craft breweries, abundance of food carts, and unexpectedly lively weekday breakfast scene—Portland is a vacationer’s utopia. For a seriously soulful Southern fix, Screen Door’s fried chicken and waffles will set you free. Tucked away in Goose Hollow, Ichiza Kitchen produces perfect vegan pan-Asian specialties like tapioca dumplings with bamboo shoots and shiitakes.

Orlando, Florida

Ranking high in similar food roundups all across the internet, this vibrant city is finally getting its day in the sun. Orlando’s heap of touristy entertainment venues and chains may have gotten it a bad rap in the past, but times have changed. Sensational, yet subtle, gems in neighborhoods like Thornton and Winter Park have aided O-Town in breaking through its former stereotype. And, from modern, inventive gastropubs like The Ravenous Pig to farm-to-table favorites like the seasonally diverse Rusty Spoon, you’ll have a hard time deciding where to begin. I vote for the glorious garlic naan flatbreads at James Beard-nominated Hari Pulapaka’s Cress.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincy’s signature Skyline Chili obviously earns a mention, but there’s so much more to tell. With a nod to its multifaceted Midwestern location, Cincinnati has continued to create a fanfare in food communities far and wide. The star-studded lineup of rock star chefs doesn’t hurt, making the ample options for memorable meals (like classically delicious spoonbread at The Eagle) only that much more exciting. One of the most notorious restaurants in the Queen City, the Orchids at Palm Court, is filled with noshable nostalgia and locally-sourced comforts. Hit Pontiac BBQ for tropical cocktails and brisket burritos, and let e+o Kitchen downtown curb all your Asian cuisine cravings.

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago may be iconic for saucy, high-edge pizzas and pickle-clad hot dogs—but those foodie fetishes barely scratch the surface of this culinary landscape. (Though if you visit Lincoln Park without chomping down on Pequod’s cheesy, caramelized crust, you’ve made a mistake.) Think every block is swarming with swanky Michelin superstars like Alinea? Think again. Chi-Town’s best bites span from humble brunch institutions like Lula Café in Logan Square to rustic, Avondale-based Honey Butter Fried Chicken. For a pricey yet praise-worthy feast in the West Loop, Oriole’s clever, multi-course menu is an experience worth every penny.

Austin, Texas

Dubbed “the best place to live in America,” this constantly growing city is clearly no stranger to topping charts. Renowned for its delightfully weird, whimsical spirit—this colorful Texas kingdom is booming thanks to its reasonably modest cost of doing business. Food truck fixtures include Soursop, Luke’s Inside Out, and Abo Youssef (whose sticky baklava is drool-worthy). In South Lamar, house-made breads at Odd Duck are always necessary, and Franklin Barbeque is a lunchtime duh for dope smoked meats. On the newer end of the spectrum, Nixta Taqueria’s artistic tostadas (like the beet “tartare” with salsa macha aioli) are all the rage.

There are over 7,000 craft breweries in the United States, including over 2,500 brewpubs. The following are some of the best cities to visit if you are a beer aficionado or just like to drink beer in a cool town while you search for your ideal destination.

Asheville, North Carolina

With 26 local venues, Asheville has more breweries per capita than any other U.S. city, and they offer a total of 100 craft beers to sample. Take the three-hour Brews Cruise bus tour to visit many of the best downtown locations or hop on the people-powered Amazing Pubcycle to burn a few calories between refreshment stops. The Beer City Festival (May 30) in Pack Square Park is the grand finale of Asheville Beer Week.

Wilmington, North Carolina

The growing Wilmington beer scene now includes 20 craft breweries in the historic downtown area and nearby beach towns. The Wilmington Brewing Company has recently added a new 5,000-square-foot event space, and Front Street Brewery will be celebrating its 25th anniversary throughout June 2020. Flytrap Brewing and Waterline Brewing Company are perfect spots to enjoy a beer outdoor throughout the year.

78 | ideal-LIVING.com/ventureout

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is home to more than 20 craft breweries, many offering local-food menus, and nearly all feature the live country music that’s made the city famous. Unique tastes are available from neighborhood micro-pubs in East Nashville and New Heights to the renowned Yazoo Brewing Company. Make a side trip to sample the hard stuff at the Diskin Cidery or the Jack Daniel Distillery among other area producers of craft spirits.

Greenville, South Carolina

In revitalized downtown Greenville along the Reedy River and in nearby neighborhoods are 15 local breweries, plus four new venues that open in 2020. More than 60 craft brews, ranging from pale ale to black lager, are available to enjoy before, during, and after dinner at scores of casual-dining restaurants. The Brewery Experience van tour visits up to seven locations on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis currently has 33 local breweries and taprooms about evenly divided between the visitor-friendly downtown area (with several peddle-pub guided tours) and welcoming neighborhoods that surround the city. Sun King Brewing, Metazoa Brewing Company, Broad Ripple Brewpub, and the iconic St. Joseph Brewery & Public House are not-to-be-missed highlights. The annual Indiana Microbrewers Festival will be held this year on July 25 with more than 75 beer crafters from around the state.

Salt Lake City, Utah

The surprisingly strong Salt Lake City craft beer scene features 30 local breweries, many located in the comfortably walkable downtown area. May is the city’s Official Craft Beer Month and a great time for visitors to get extra discounts at more than a dozen of them by downloading the Salt Lake Brewery Mobile Pass. The tour can include historic Fisher Brewing (est. 1884) and award-winning locations like Desert Edge Brewery and Red Rock Brewing Company.

Denver, Colorado

The Mile High City features more than 50 breweries, and many of the best are located downtown within walking distance of one another. Guided tours are also offered with bus, van, and bicycle transportation. The Great Divide and Blue Moon brewing companies are must-sample venues, along with a tasty tour of the Coors Brewery in nearby Golden, which annually produces 17 million barrels of beer, more than any other single site in the world.

Portland, Oregon

Portland’s unofficial nickname is “Beervana,” and that seems only appropriate in a city that claims 75 local breweries and counting. Breakside, Ecliptic, and Gigantic are trendy names to look for, as well as traditional favorites like Hair of the Dog and Modern Times. Portlanders celebrate their brews at 2020 events like Bridge to Brews (April 5), PDX Beer Week (June 12-21), and the Portland Craft Beer Festival (July 3-5).

ideal-LIVING invites you to explore communities to find your ideal destination, life, and home. Following are five stories from homeowners who found their ideal life after taking advantage of discovery weekends during their search.

Finding A Forever Home in Citrus Hills

And, that’s just how she and her husband Jim Hecht decided that Citrus Hills in central Florida was to be the location of their forever home. They visited about four times before purchasing their homesite along the ninth tee, situated along a lake with a waterview and incredible views of the sunrise and sunset. They are currently building their home and can’t wait to get back to the warm air and rolling hills in Florida.

The Hechts had lived for over 10 years in a 4,000 sq. ft. home in Hope Sound, FL, and they also have a 6,000 sq. ft. lakehouse in Tennessee. They loved both places, but chose to sell their Florida home and temporarily move full time to their home in Tennessee until they can finish building their new 3,200 sq. ft. home with incredible outdoor living spaces, including a pool, hot tub, outdoor fireplace, tv, and bar area. They will keep their home in Tennessee as a summer getaway.

When they first visited Citrus Hills, they were taken aback by the beauty of the com-

munity and how everything was so neat and clean. Deborah Ann says, “Citrus Hills is a gated, clean, elegant community with friendly people. The people here are always smiling and down-to-earth.” The second time they visited, they were deciding between Ormand Beach and Citrus Hills. They stayed in an elegant villa and ate phenomenal food. “I was expecting a high pressure environment, but it wasn’t. After our realtor, Valerie, gave us a tour, we were on our own to check out the fitness center, spa, and golf courses. Citrus Hills is surrounded by quaint little towns. We have high expectations, and Citrus Hills met them.”

Although Jim is an avid golfer (and so is their son who they hope will visit often), Deborah Ann doesn’t play yet, but she would like to. Citrus Hills has three challenging championship golf courses, as well as a nine-hole. They are excited to meet new people and start enjoying their new life.

“You can’t get a true fit unless you are there and experience it a few times,” says Deborah Ann.

A Perfect Opportunity to Find Their Ideal Life

“This was, next to marrying Elaine, the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. I have never been as blessed with friends and people who are so open-minded,” gushed Kirk McGowan who relocated to Woodside, in Aiken, SC, a little over a year ago.

Before selling their home and financial planning business in Tyler, TX, the McGowan’s knew they wanted to relocate, so they started traveling to different locations and taking advantage of Discovery Travel packages along the way. They wanted somewhere in the southeastern conference near a college, and healthcare was very important. They toured communities in Athens, GA, Oviedo, FL, Auburn, AL, and more. Elaine said, “It was always a feel for us. We always left knowing it wasn’t a fit for us. Then, we drove into Aiken and fell in love with Woodside.” And, they bought a homesite the next day.

“When we toured Woodside, everything went perfectly. They arranged for us to stay in a B&B. We could see the quality first-hand. The other places just didn’t compare. We went to the ‘pub club’ on Friday night and got to meet a lot of the residents. Then on Saturday, we picked out our homesite,” said Kirk. “There is a point when you can research something to death, and you can always find fault. But, when you find something that fits and it answers all you need, then you say, it’s not going to get much better.”

“We made a laundry list of what we really wanted. It came down to healthcare, demographic location, neighborhood, and management. We probably could have looked further, but I am totally satisfied with the decision. We’ve never questioned it,” Elaine added.

Kirk says the Discovery Travel gave them the opportunity to do due diligence, “kick the tires,” and ask the hard questions. As Kirk was a financial advisor, the details really mattered to him. He wanted to make sure that the community was finan-

cially sound as he knew it will eventually be turned over to the property owner’s association (POA). “The POA is wonderful. It is extremely well-organized and managed. The POA is active, fair, and has great communication.”

That was three years ago, then they moved into their new home on February 14, 2019, and they haven’t looked back. Both Elaine and Kirk are golfers and love the new Hollow Creek Course designed by Clyde Johnston.

“We are blessed with so many wonderful people from different places. Our neighbors are from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. It’s been refreshing for us. There is a diverse population with lots of engineers, IT professionals, academics, and prior military. Everyone here sort of assumes you were successful in your former life. What you did before isn’t really going to impress anyone. It’s what you do now that matters.”

Elaine and Kirk both volunteer their time. Kirk has been asked to join a Board of Directors and Elaine is active in the Women of Woodside, a philanthropic group that helps with organizations such as meals on wheels. They are also members at The Reserve Club.

The McGowans are simply glowing about their new life in Woodside, and it all started with a three-day/two-night Discovery Package.

Spontaneity Breeds Joy

When Joel (51) and Allison (55) of Ashburn, VA, began thinking of their upcoming retirement, it didn’t take long to make the decision that will shape their futures. Joel had been dreaming of buying a boat in retirement when he received a brochure in the mail inviting them to a dinner presentation for WindRiver, a lake and golf community on Tellico Lake in Tennessee in June of 2017. At the dinner, they booked a Discovery tour for two months later. And, they fell in love with WindRiver.

Allison says, “From the exploration and decision-making process, WindRiver does a good job of aligning Discovery weekends with community events. When we went there, they had amazing live music and a beautifully catered dinner in the evening. As it got dark, the lights were up over the pool for ambiance. We met so many community residents at that social event. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. It gave us the sense that ‘yeah, we could really see ourselves here.’ The residents showed up and shared their stories and welcomed us. It all added to the feeling that this is the place that we want to be.”

“We’re not that spontaneous!” they both insisted, but they purchased a homesite that weekend and have no regrets. Joel said, “We looked at several different lots. Tom Conwell, our sales agent (and now friend), was kind enough

to take us out on his boat and show us the homesite from the water, and that’s what sold us. Allison says, “The whole perspective of the community from the view of the lake was very impressive, not to mention that the appeal of living there is all about the lake. That’s what made us imagine that we could do this daily.”

“To see a sunset on that lake is just amazing. The beauty of it sold me,” said Joel. And, the fact that Tennessee won’t tax their federal pensions was a huge bonus as they are both retiring from the federal government at the end of this summer. Not to mention, Tennessee is known for its lower property taxes.

They are currently in the process of building their new home on their lakefront lot. The new home will be larger than the one they currently inhabit. Allison says, “It’s a home designed for a different lifestyle. It’s lake living that capitalizes on the views with different dedicated spaces for entertaining and hosting family and friends. We want visitors. The home has carefully thought out spaces.”

Joel is a golfer, and Allison wants to learn. They are excited that their new-found time will offer the ability for a very active lifestyle. They plan to purchase a boat and keep it in the WindRiver marina. They also plan to keep kayaks and paddleboards near the lake for easy access. Tellico Lake is a 16,000acre lake fed by the streams of the Great Smoky Mountains that is only 30 minutes away from downtown Knoxville.

So happy with their decision, Allison brought some of their friends to the ideal-LIVING real estate show in Northern Virginia to help them get an idea of what is out there. She says, “This is a really interesting forum giving exposure to a lot of communities in a big swath of geography in one place. It was very well organized. It enabled them to get a ton of information in a compressed amount of time.”

Kicking the Tires

According to David Skidmore, one of the best ways to take a look at properties and amenities is by enjoying a three-day/two-night “stay and play” package. “It’s great to be able to kick the tires.” He adds that “on day one you spend about an hour with an overview of the general area, and on day two you can take a tour of the golf courses and amenities.”

Savannah Lakes Village invites prospective residents to experience what it’s like to be a member of the club by staying in one of their townhomes and enjoying two rounds of golf on each of their courses (Tara and Monticello). Guests also enjoy the 23,000 sq. ft. recreation center that includes classes, swimming pools, fitness room, bowling alley, as well as tennis and pickleball courts.

David says, “It’s one of the best kept secrets in the Southeast. You just can’t beat the value for the amenities.” The property owners association owns all of the amenities. Savannah Lakes Village has a la carte ame-

nities, so you just pay for the amenities that you use.

David retired a year ago while he and his wife Diana were living in Atlanta. They thought that Atlanta was just getting overcrowded, so they sold their home and bought a larger one on the eighth tee with a lake view for $100k less at Savannah Lakes Village. The Skidmores had taken two to three trips before they decided to buy.

Boaters of all kinds are attracted to the 71,000-acre Lake Thurmond. With over 1,200 miles of shoreline, overcrowding is never a problem. The Skidmores love living on the lake. They bought a pontoon boat with one of their friends, and they share the boating costs and usage right down the middle.

David was so impressed with the community that he decided to get his real estate license last year and share his excitement with others looking for an active lifestyle.

A 50/70 Package Deal

Families Relocate from New York to North Carolina

Welcome to “Zucker South.” With relatives who already lived in coastal North Carolina, Doug and Jasmine Zucker knew they wanted to make a change. In their early 50s with two sons now in college and a 12-year-old daughter, the Zuckers were ready to move south from Westchester, NY, for many reasons. They wanted to change their lifestyle, live near the beach, and provide a different learning experience for their daughter. An added benefit would be downsizing financially. They also wanted to bring Doug’s parents who are in their 70s along with them. It was a “50/70 package deal.”

Doug’s cousin (also named Doug Zucker) who along with his wife, Susan, lives in St. James and owns and operates Bridgewater Wines, suggested that they attend an Ideal-LIVING Resort & Retirement Show in Stamford, CT. They were ready to make the move to Wilmington and decided to take advantage of a discovery package at Brunswick Forest where they stayed in a Charleston-style townhouse and were able to experience life before they purchased. Doug said, “It was nice to walk around and feel like we lived there.” It was so nice, in fact, they brought Doug’s parents down for a second discovery weekend, when they both purchased homes just four houses away from each other that back up to a nature preserve.

Their home in Banyan Bay, an enclave of 28 homes in the 4,500-acre master-planned community of Brunswick Forest, has four bedrooms plus an office that allows space for their guests. Jasmine’s parents from Austria recently stayed for a few months with them. This happened to be one of their favorite trips to the U.S. as they were impressed with the welcoming environment of the community.

While they do miss some things about their life in New York,

life in Brunswick Forest is pretty idyllic for the Zucker family. Not to mention that their taxes are now one tenth of what they were in NY. Not yet retired, Doug still operates a wealth management firm, Trusted Advisors Corp., from his home office in Brunswick Forest and maintains an office in NYC, and Jasmine was able to relocate with Wells Fargo. They are much more active and are outside a lot more than in NY. Doug is an avid pickleball player and Jasmine enjoys a cooking class and is involved in a crochet club. The family spends a lot of time walking around the community and their daughter loves to be able to go four doors down to her grandparents house.

One of their favorite things about living in the Banyan Bay neighborhood is the people and the monthly house parties. As Jasmine is Austrian, they hosted a traditional Oktoberfest with sausage and German beer kegs from Bridgewater Wines.

Brunswick Forest is only a few minutes from the historic district in downtown Wilmington with all of its restaurants and activities. They recently saw a traveling Broadway show at Thalian Hall in downtown Wilmington for $35. Doug says, “It kind of feels like a college student going on spring break all of the time.”

It's so easy to get on a plane in Wilmington. Doug says, “It’s very easy and inexpensive to fly back to Manhattan. You can literally drive up to the airport and park in the front row at ILM, then catch a direct flight to Laguardia, and be in the city for a $30 taxi ride.”

“My wife and I have been very fortunate to have lived in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, in Westchester, and even in Spain, for a while. But, now, living in Brunswick Forest is wonderful!”

Take a look inside the nation’s second largest continuing care retirement community

In response to increased demand for communities that allow its residents to age gracefully for the rest of their lives, Ideal-LIVING magazine is adding a “Senior Living” department in every issue, where our readers can see the latest in senior communities.

What if you could retire in paradise? A place where every day felt like vacation and activities were aplenty. A place with endless beauty and tropical flair. A place where you have the comfort of knowing you’ll be taken care of for the rest of your life.

A Place Called Shell Point

Just east of Sanibel Island, along a twomile road surrounded by a protected natural landscape, lies Florida’s largest continuing care retirement community (CCRC) and the second largest in the nation, Shell Point Retirement Community. Spread across 700 acres situated on the shores of the Caloosahatchee River, Shell Point offers residents of southwest Florida an ideal place to retire.

Architectural variety, upscale amenities, innovative programming, and state-of-the-art healthcare services are some of the elements that make this award-winning community a leader in the senior living industry. Not to mention its waterfront location.

From woodlands to wetlands, riverside to lakeside, Shell Point is a nature lover’s dream and boater’s delight. Miles of scenic walking trails, winding through five unique neighborhoods, allow those who live there a place to connect with nature and experience the coastal landscape from the comforts of their own homes.

During her first visit to Shell Point in 1993, retired sixth grade teacher and Texas native Dotty Morrison was captivated by the richness of birdlife found throughout the community. “I remember visiting my parents, who were moving in at the time, when my mother said that every bird you can think of is right here in our backyard,” gloats Dotty. In the 12 years since making the move herself, the avid bird watcher has embraced Shell Point’s tropical environment, documenting over 100 species of avian life on her way around campus.

The beauty of the outdoors complements the interiors of each neighborhood and community building. With a sophisticated selection of floor plans, custom designs, and an abundance of architectural styles to choose from, the options for luxury living are endless. Studio units, high-rise apartments, and single-family homes are some of the many residential options dotting the retirement resort.

Ageless Creativity

No matter what your passion may be, Shell Point caters to each individual’s desires with a customized approach that allows the freedom to design their own retirement. Take for example, the arts.

Since the community’s opening in 1968, artful living and creative minds have been celebrated through a variety of studios dedicated to painting, pottery, stained glass and lapidary, photography, woodworking, and more. While many residents’ passions may have started before coming to Shell Point, having these creative spaces has allowed others the chance to explore new things for the first time.

Unparalleled Setting, Unparalleled Lifestyle

When it comes to the lifestyle at Shell Point, there’s nothing quite like it. On any given day, residents can enjoy countless recreational opportunities for education, wellness, and adventure. With more than 100 activity and volunteer groups—like bocce, gardening, music, aviation, kayaking, and modelyacht sailing—the possibilities of starting a new hobby or exploring an old passion are more imaginable than ever.

Located in the “golf capital of the world,” Shell Point has become an alluring setting for golfers like Eunice Murray. After moving to Shell Point in 2015 with her husband Jerry, she wasted little time getting to know the community and their neighbors. “When we moved in, I made a point of putting myself out there. There was no shortage of opportunities to engage in, thanks to the programs and special amenities that are provided,” says Eunice.

sub-division of old-Florida style homes and single-family villas that offers Eunice and others the perfect place to take advantage of challenging fairways, sweeping views, and an elegant clubhouse.

Boating is also a popular activity on The Island at Shell Point, a 75-acre waterfront neighborhood that features a marina with free dockage and deep water access to the Gulf of Mexico.

For those who prefer to stay on dry land, an orchid house and butterfly habitat, fitness classes, educational programs, outdoor lounges, salon and spas, coastal-inspired restaurants, and charming cafés are available throughout the day.

Another favorite among Shell Point’s active retirees is pickleball. Similar to the traditional game of tennis, this fun, year-round sport provides a wonderful opportunity for residents to remain active and enrich their social lives.

Jerry Ingalls became interested in the game a few years back after attending

and neighbors. "I can’t think of another sport that provides great exercise, regardless of skill level, challenges you both physically and mentally, and allows you to laugh with friends at the same time,” says Jerry.

Multiple tennis and pickleball courts, situated between a woodsy backdrop and scenic lakes, make The Woodlands neighborhood a popular hub for exciting activity and entertainment. Its four high-rise residential buildings also provide the perfect spot to take in the 360-degree views of Florida’s coastlines and nature preserves.

“When we moved in, I made a point of putting myself out there. There was no shortage of opportunities to engage in, thanks to the programs and special amenities that are provided,” says Eunice.

EMBRACING Healthy Living

Wellness is a major focus for enjoying life to its fullest at Shell Point. Through its innovative program called LifeQuest, Shell Point promotes personal wellness and community involvement through six specific dimensions of wellness: community and social, physical, spiritual, emotional, educational, and natural environment. This whole-person wellness model is designed to encourage each individual to challenge themselves to set goals for a more balanced life. With that, residents have access to the resources, support systems, programs, and services that allow them the freedom to be as active or engaged as they choose.

Additionally, the cornerstone of Shell Point’s unique lifestyle is its signature Lifecare product that guarantees future long-term care, starting from the moment you move in throughout the years to come. From independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and more, those who utilize Shell Point’s Health System benefit from an on-site team of health professionals including primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, specialty physicians, two state-of-the-art medical centers with lab and x-ray services, a full-service pharmacy, and a rehabilitation center.

With complete access to this full continuum of robust healthcare services, residents can choose from a variety of health and wellness resources, all within Shell Point. Like many of the upscale amenities and innovative programs available throughout the community, these wellness services enhance the lives of those who call Shell Point home.

For more than five decades, Shell Point’s unparalleled setting, resortstyle features, and advanced healthcare services have made the community more than a pleasant place to retire. They’ve made it a place where you can enjoy the life you’ve dreamed of and the one you worked hard to achieve. A place where spontaneous get-togethers, outdoor recreation, and exciting adventure create your ideal retirement— this is Shell Point.

After retiring to Shell Point in 2005, Augusta Crane was searching for ways to fill the day and follow her heart. “One day, I stopped in the pottery studio, and as soon as I got my hands on clay, I knew I had found my passion,” she exclaims.

Today, her developed talent has launched her into the local fine arts community where she has displayed and sold her floral-themed pottery. Like many Shell Point artists, Augusta looks forward to the completion of the Tribby Arts Center, a 44,000-square-foot building dedicated to visual and performing arts. Scheduled for completion in fall 2020, the new facility will offer expanded and first-time spaces for artists and musicians to work, as well as educational programming, concert series, and more.

Another resident eager for Tribby Arts Center to open is skilled photographer Don Adams. Since moving to Shell Point, Don has been an active member of the Photo Club, even winning a first-place prize in the community’s annual photo show and contest. He loves to translate his eye for design into a template for extraordinary photography, capturing dynamic, eye-catching scenes, and vibrant colors with his images.

When he’s not holding a camera, Don jokes that he’s usually recommending Shell Point to friends and family. “It’s hard to describe to people the level of activity, amount of clubs and classes available here. In fact, we’re more active at Shell Point than ever before,” shares Don. “But, the best part is that when we get older, we know that we will be taken care of here. We don’t have to worry about our future, and that’s wonderful.”

Hot Springs Village Turns

The largest private community in the country is located 40 minutes from the Little Rock, AR, airport, and it’s celebrating a big golden birthday this year. Hot Springs Village, founded in 1970, is turning 50 and throwing a year-long celebration under the moniker of “Proud Past, Strong Future.”

At 26,000 acres—nearly twice the size of Manhattan—Hot Springs Village rambles across miles of the Ouachita Mountain foothills in the center of the state. It is dotted with picture-book clusters of family neighborhoods, nine golf courses, 11 lakes, two full-service marinas, 27 tennis and pickleball courts, and 30 miles of nature trails. But, perhaps the most remarkable stat is that 40 percent of the community is set aside for either common areas or untouched land. Talk about room to breathe.

Other amenities at Hot Springs Village include an indoor pool, fitness center, performing arts center, a variety of dining options, and over 200 highly active social clubs.

Linda Mayhood, the chair of the 50th Anniversary Celebration, says all events are open to the public when registered by a member for gate access. “We encourage people around the country to come and share in this special occasion and the hundreds of events planned throughout the year.”

Four dates are of particular importance, including April 20, the actual 50th Anniversary date. There will also be gala Independence Day, family events on July 1 and 4. And, a special concert on the lakefront is set for September 25. A full slate of activities can be viewed at www.hotspringsvillagechamber.com/50-events.

One note, the actual city of Hot Springs and the adjacent Hot Springs National Park are about 30 minutes south of the village. Their vibrant histories include grand landmark bathhouses, and engaging art deco architecture, along with tall tales about Babe Ruth and Al Capone back in the day.

Saving Money While in a Vacation-Like Atmosphere

Janet and Jack Smith

When Jack and Janet Smith retired in their mid-50s, they traveled the country in their RV when they weren’t living at their homestead in Albuquerque or wintering at Great Outdoors RV Resort in Titusville, FL, where they also owned an RV site. But Jack, who was born in Tampa and raised in Miami, always had a desire to come back to Florida one day after moving to Albuquerque in 1979 for his career with the Department of Energy.

Smith got his Florida reunion wish last August after he and his wife purchased a new 2,500-squarefoot, 4-bedroom home in this gated private golf and country club community between Daytona Beach and Orlando. The number one compromise: Janet got to keep her Albuquerque home so she can go back and spend time with her new grandchild.

“Otherwise, she loves Florida and the house, and so do I,” says Jack, who describes the couple as avid outdoors people who love state parks and beaches.

Ormand Beach Life at Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club

What’s especially nice for the Smiths, who live off of their social security income, Jack’s federal pension, and some investment income, is the fact that Florida taxes none of that fixed income.

Jennifer and Jeff Miller

When recently married Jeff and Jennifer Miller decided to downsize now that their children from previous marriages were young adults, they didn’t have to go far when they purchased a new 1,800-squarefoot, three-bedroom, two-bath home. They just had to move over from the neighboring Flagler County community.

“We just wanted to simplify everything,” says Jennifer, 44. “Even the yard’s a lot smaller. But we just love Plantation Bay, and we don’t even golf. We chose it for the amenities, the natural beauty, and lifestyle.”

Each night as they tool around in their golf cart with dogs in tow, they pinch themselves at times as they take in the luxurious 3,600-acre gated club community with miles of pristine natural beauty, natural wildlife like turkey and deer, world-class amenities: 45 holes of championship golf, two fullservice clubhouses, pickleball, lighted Har-Tru tennis courts, a scenic pool pavilion with cabana bar, and more.

“Never did I think we’d be those people living in a community like this,” Jennifer says. “It takes us away like we’re on vacation.”

Belize Starting a New Life in

Imagine, if you will, the perfect day, waking to the lapping of the Caribbean Sea on the white sand beaches, looking out over the reef to check the day’s weather, followed by hopping in your golf cart and finding the freshest ingredients for the daily specials.

Every day for the last four months, this has been the life of Joe Leszko, who recently relocated to semiretire and help start a beach bar and restaurant on the northern side of Ambergris Caye, the largest island off the coast of Belize. When his buddy asked him to come, Joe jumped at the chance, and soon, his partner, Teri, will join him. Coming from the restaurant business in Texas and growing up on the south side of Chicago, Belize is a welcome retreat for Joe.

Still virtually undiscovered, this English-speaking Central American country offers a glimpse into the past while heading straight into the future. Joe is quick to point out that on the island, “Everybody knows everyone.” He says, “Everything is so relaxing here, and it balances the charm of the old with the amenities of the new. When you move here, you are pushed out of your comfort zone.” It’s been exhilarating for him to enjoy a new way of life.

As a restauranteur and a food lover, Joe is enjoying his time using local ingredients for new creations for the islanders. He travels to the local markets and is amazed by the freshness of the produce. He’s learning new techniques to cook meats and fish and creating a new flare to the food, and will soon complete his new menu. Joe embodies the spirit of Azure, a unique, multi-phase development comprised of beachfront villas and private

residences, situated in North Ambergris Caye just on the edge of the Belize Barrier Reef (a recognized World Heritage site). Joe makes sure that spirit is in every meal that he serves. It is undeniable that the community is already alive, well, and hungry.

Azure is set on 1,000 feet of rare, pristine Caribbean coastline and is the perfect setting for this new community to come together. Azure is sure to set new building standards as it is striving to be the first LEED certified resort in Belize. The developers are focused on sustainability, exceptional design, quality, and value.

Ambergris Caye has a thriving expat community with people from all over the world. Belize makes it very easy for people to retire by offering retirement perks. There is no inheritance or capital gains tax, and it’s relatively easy to gain residency status.

Residents of Ambergris Caye can enjoy snorkeling in the protected reef in shallow waters of just 10 to 35 feet, they can view vibrant tropical fish, eel, rays, sharks, and some of the world’s healthiest and most colorful sea coral. Or, they can watch schools of tiny tropical fish dart along the coral. You can even take a day’s excursion to the famed Blue Hole, the world’s largest marine sinkhole that lies near Lighthouse Reef. If relaxation, great fresh food, and every water sport you can imagine all in an English-speaking, stable, evolving country sounds good to you, Belize and Ambergris Caye might just be the place for you. Come create your ideal retirement destination.

Farm Fresh Dining

at Babcock Ranch

Blending smart growth and conservation, Kitson & Partners have developed Florida’s most eco-friendly community to date. Blazing a trail in the world of sustainability, Babcock Ranch is setting the bar high with enough solar power for around 15,000 homes, acres of preserved nature, and pioneering farm-to-table dining.

Located just north of Fort Myers, Babcock Ranch is carving the way for a greener future. Utilizing the latest in energy-efficient technology, organic farming methods, and a holistic approach to wellness, Babcock Ranch is inspiring where the needs of its residents harmonize with the needs of nature.

Aligning firmly with the ethics of the Ranch, Table & Tap was the first on-site restaurant to open. “Our main goal is to source the freshest possible ingredients, and that means growing as much as we can right here on the ranch,” explains Don Estep, Babcock Ranch Director of Food & Beverage.

This visionary principle means that a majority of the restaurants’ food comes directly from Babcock Ranch itself, local farms, and other nearby sources. One of the many benefits of the farm-to-dining concept is bypassing ingredients that have sat on a warehouse shelf for weeks or transported hundreds of miles. Skipping the middle man in culinary retail also allows Table & Tap to have a surprisingly economical price point while providing fresh, organic, and locally-grown food.

Chef's Corner | Babcock Ranch

Micro-greens and a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and spices, are harvested on-site at Babcock Ranch. They even have their very own flavored honeys, including palmetto, citrus, blueberry, and orange blossom. Eggs come from cage-free local chickens, and some of Table & Tap’s meat is brought in from nearby farms that maintain the highest standard of ethical farming. However, Babcock Ranch even plans to raise its own cattle in the future to provide complete farm-to-table, local, and sustainable dining for all.

There truly is something for everyone on the ever-evolving Table & Tap menu. This includes extensive gluten-free and vegan dishes, alongside more traditional options such as pulled pork sandwiches with homemade coleslaw and pickled green tomatoes. Inspired daily specials are created by connecting with local farmers that specialize in different kinds of produce such as asparagus, spaghetti squash, or golden beets.

“We like to plan a season ahead of time so that we continue to provide a variety of options and ensure that our menu remains exciting, in addition to being as fresh as can be,” smiles Estep.

Table & Tap serves the locals alongside Slater’s Goods & Provisions and Square Scoops, which offers coffee and ice cream treats. All of Babcock Ranch’s dining options promise the same ethical standards and are committed to providing farm-to-table ingredients as much as possible. So, whether you’re looking for an evening meal, a refreshing juice, or just need to pick up a few groceries for yourself, Babcock has you covered in the most sustainable way imaginable.

Just the facts about ...

Pickle ball

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing participant sports in the world, especially among age-55+ adults. There are an estimated 2.5 million players in the United States alone.

• Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island near Seattle, WA, by a group of dads who wanted their restless kids to get some healthy outdoor exercise.

• “A cross between mini-tennis and pingpong on steroids” is how pickleball has been described.

• A standard pickleball court (20’ wide by 44’ long) is roughly half the size of a tennis court (36’ wide by 78’ long). The net in both games is about three feet high.

• Pickleball can be played year-round on indoor courts or outside, where the elements can come into play. The only other difference is in the pickleball itself, which looks like a large plastic whiffle ball:

there are 26 holes for the indoor ball and 40 for the harder, heavier outdoor model. Fluorescent yellow is the preferred color for tournament play.

• A basic pickleball paddle is made of wood, weighs about 10 ounces, and can cost as little as $15. More advanced models are a bit lighter, made of composite cores with graphite faces, and range in price from $35 to more than $200.

• Like tennis, pickleball is a serve-and-volley game for singles or doubles, and points can only be scored by the serving side. One major difference is the non-volley zone called “the kitchen,” which is situated seven feet on either side of the net and prevents smash returns.

• Nearly all new age-55+ active-adult communities are building pickleball courts as part of their recreational infrastructure, and most established racquet clubs are adding them for players of all ages to enjoy.

• The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA.org) is the game’s national governing body and has a searchable database of more than 15,000 courts at over 6,000 locations in all 50 states.

The Margaritaville USA National Pickleball Championships will be held at California’s Indian Wells Tennis Garden from October 31 through November 8, 2020.

Shingles and the Shingrix Vaccine

My friend Barbara had shingles and told me it was the most painful experience she ever had, including childbirth. Having gone through labor with my three now-adult children, I was motivated to look into Shingrix, the newest vaccine for shingles, approved in October 2017. I had previously received the older, but less effective vaccine, Zostavax, approved in 2006.

Let’s explore shingles, the vaccines, and clear up some common questions and misconceptions to help prevent this difficult disease.

What is shingles?

Shingles is an infection caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus can hide in nerves along the spinal column of those who previously had chickenpox. It’s thought that a breakdown in the immune system, as well as getting older, enables the virus to “re-activate” and cause shingles.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that about 95 percent of adults over 40 in the United States have had chickenpox. Among those not vaccinated against shingles, about one in three will contract it. Many adults are uncertain if they had chickenpox as a child, but you can get a blood test which tests for antibodies against the virus to find out. As an aside, a chickenpox vaccine has been available in the United States since 1995. Those who receive this vaccination have a 99 percent chance of being “safe” from

shingles, but that won’t protect most of us reading this article since most of us have had chickenpox and the virus is already inside us. Symptoms of shingles frequently include a red rash that follows several days of pain, burning, tingling, itching, sensitivity to touch, and/or numbness. The rash produces fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over. The rash is often, but not always, in a band on one side of the waist; “shingles” is named for the Latin and French names for “girdle” and “belt”, which describes this rash that frequently appears around the abdomen.

Can you “catch” shingles?

You cannot “catch” shingles from someone with shingles, but if you haven’t been vaccinated against chickenpox or if you do not have antibodies against the virus from having had chickenpox yourself, you can get chickenpox from someone who has shingles with the active rash blisters. And, of course, you could then possibly later develop shingles yourself, not a happy thought.

124 | ideal-LIVING.com
Healthy Living
IPGGUTENBERGUKLTD / ISTOCK / GETTY IMAGES PLUS; DANIEL CHETRONI / ISTOCK / GETTY IMAGES PLUS

Although unlikely, it is possible to get shingles a second time. The chance of a recurrence is five percent. And, although rare, you can conceivably get shingles a third time. However, a bigger issue after shingles is potentially getting a pain syndrome called PHN (postherpetic neuralgia). Sometimes PHN occurs after the shingles rash has disappeared and can last for more than a month. PHN is the result of damaged nerve fibers from the shingles virus and occurs in about 10 to 15 percent of shingles cases. Anti-seizure medication can help calm the electrical activity in the damaged nerves, and other medicines, such antidepressants and anti-viral agents, may also be given for PHN.

Other, less common side effects of shingles can include blindness and, very rarely, hearing problems, pneumonia, encephalitis (brain inflammation), or death.

How effective are the vaccines?

The Shingrix vaccine, recommended for people age 50 and over, is a two-dose vaccine: you get the second shot two to six months following the first vaccination. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 97 percent of those adults 50 to 69 years old who received the two doses of Shingrix were protected from shingles, and 91 percent were protected from PHN. Among adults 70 years and older, Shingrix (again, two shots) was 91 percent effective

You can get shingles more than once ... and possibly the dreaded PHN
The Shingrix vaccine, recommended for people 50 and over, is a two-dose vaccine: you get the second shot two to six months following the first vaccination.

at preventing shingles, and 89 percent effective at preventing PHN. Pretty good results for a vaccine!

The older vaccine, Zostavax, reduced the risk of shingles by 51 percent for people age 60 years or older, and there was a 39 percent lower incidence of PHN than those who were not vaccinated. So, Zostavax is certainly better than nothing, but Shingrix is far superior (and no, I have no connection with the makers of any of these vaccines!). Even if you had the older Zostavax vaccine, you should still get the Shingrix vaccine, since this newer vaccine is much more effective. I am one of those people who have had both Zostavax and Shingrix vaccines. When first launched, there were severe shortages of the Shingrix vaccine—people put their names on waiting lists, there were limited supplies and deliveries of the vaccine, and waits for the shots are long. The shortage has eased up.

What side effects should you expect?

The most common side effects include a sore arm at the injection site (about 70 percent describe the shot as “painful”), as well as redness and swelling. About one in six people experience side effects such as headaches, shivering, pain in the muscles or stomach, and/or feeling nauseous or experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Side effects can last a day or two. My arm was sore after the shot, but that was the extent of it, so I felt lucky. And, it seemed a good tradeoff for avoiding the pain of recurring shingles or of PHN, which can last for months or years.

How much does the Shingrix shot cost?

I’ll be honest with you—the Shingrix vaccine is not cheap. If you self-pay, it’s about $170 per shot, and remember that you need two of them. With Medicare Part D coverage, I paid about $60/shot (but be sure to call your insurance company to find out your cost). Is it worth it? I think so. So does my friend Barbara.

Financial Planning Considerations for a Successful Retirement

How much money will you need to retire? Do you have a financial plan to help you meet the needs of retirement? Do you have enough assets to last a retirement of 20 to 30 years? Do you have a Retirement Income SpendDown Plan? How will you manage rising health care costs and long-term care?

These are loaded questions; many factors are involved, and a “cookie cutter plan” will not meet the needs of everyone. Baby Boomers were most impacted by the “Great Recession” 10 years ago. Given the economic rebound since and inevitable recessions in the economic cycle, we wanted to take a look at strategies for a secure retirement by examining the five common planning issues people may encounter.

According to a recent Schwab survey, only 25 percent of Americans have a written strategy for retirement.

Therefore, Ideal-LIVING spoke with Lawrence S. Tundidor, AIF®, AAMS®, AWMA® of Tundidor & Weiss Investment Group, to help you avoid these common issues:

one. Take control of your money

two. Not having a proper retirement income spend-down plan

three. Having an antiquated investment portfolio

four. Underestimating risks: longevity, investment, inflation

five. Lacking protection for your family and estate

six. Working with a financial advisor who puts your best interests first

1. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR MONEY

Upon changing employment/retirement, some keep their money in the original employer sponsor plan. It is important to take into account one’s personal situation and consider the various options, which include: keeping your assets in the original plan; withdrawing your assets (taxes are generally due upon withdrawal and any applicable tax penalties that may apply); or choosing to rollover your assets to an employersponsored retirement plan that accepts rollovers or to another eligible vehicle such as a traditional IRA. It is imperative to take control of your money when you make the decision to retire from your company. Considering your options will give you the freedom to work toward maximizing your investments.

Pension Maximization Possibilities

Examine pension survivorship benefits. If you are one of the lucky ones to retire with a pension, at the time of retirement, you must elect how you will disperse the benefit. To protect your spouse, you can typically opt for a lower monthly amount to ensure your spouse is covered until “end of plan.” This may or may not be the best option. Some clients choose to opt for the single life benefit and instead have an Insurance policy to protect their spouse or beneficiaries. In some cases, not only can it protect loved ones, but some insurance policies allow for the death benefit to also be used for long-term care. This can ensure that the benefit will be used during one’s life, death, or both. This is an irrevocable decision, so consult with a financial advisor before finalizing your election.

The majority of pension benefits do not have a “COLA”

(Cost of Living Adjustment) increase with age, therefore, consider what the money will be worth in 20 years. Assuming above a three percent inflation rate, a $4,000 a month pension would only be worth about $2,000 a month in 20 years. For those with a lump sum option, consider the option to invest and generate an income stream that has the ability to offset inflation pressures over time.

2. NOT HAVING A PROPER RETIREMENT INCOME SPEND-DOWN PLAN

Where do you draw your money from when you need it? From an IRA? Sell stocks? 401Ks? Real estate? Brokerage accounts?

You have worked very hard for your money and decisions on when and where to use your money can have ill-intentioned consequences.

Plan where your money will come from instead of putting it all into one pot. In retirement, you should consider having long-term, mid- term, and short-term investments to help protect you from market fluctuations while maximizing your income potential. More conservative investments go in short-term, moderate investments for mid-term, and more aggressive in long-term. Picking and choosing investments to liquidate on a monthly basis can be stressful, and most advisors show you how and where to save but not how to create an income stream from your investment assets.

When drawing income directly from a 401k, the plan provider will typically sell shares or “units” to send you a monthly amount you requested. The issue with this strategy is that you are indiscriminately selling shares in an up or down market regardless of price. In a down market, you are selling shares at a lower price and therefore cannot allow time for those shares to recover essentially burning the candle on both ends. Consider investments that provide a dividend or yield that allow you to draw income without selling shares.

Having an income spend-down plan can help minimize taxes. For example, if you are taking all of your income from your IRA, this could potentially put you in a higher tax bracket. The goal is to determine how much money to draw from each of your investment assets to maximize your returns and minimize your tax consequences.

3. HAVING AN ANTIQUATED INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO

A recent Vanguard study projected investors’ portfolio returns over the next 10 years to be between three and five percent annually versus nine to 11 percent they have enjoyed over the last decade. Many pre-retirees/ retirees have invested with a 60/40 stock/bond ratio and think their portfolio is diversified and able to generate enough income. In the past,

bonds have yielded five to seven percent, but now most estimates put projections for bond returns at an average of two percent. It is important to examine having some portion of your investments in alternative assets or alternative strategies to work to minimize volatility and potentially increase return. As few as two percent of the U.S. population has a truly diversified portfolio with alternatives. Diversification may allow you to hedge against inflation and interest rates.

4. UNDERESTIMATING RISKS: LONGEVITY, INVESTMENT, INFLATION

There are three major types of risk that people fail to analyze: investment risk, longevity risk, and inflation risk.

Investment risk (tied to sequence of returns) is the possibility that your investments could lose value because of movements in financial markets. A recession historically comes once or twice every decade. If you had retired during that time and were forced to sell investments to fund your retirement expenses, then you would have lost a great deal of the upside when the market recovered. For example, Disney stock had dipped down to $20 in 2008; you may not have been able to wait for it to recover and then sell

131 ideal-LIVING.com |

when the price was much higher. Now that it has been 10 years since the last recession and many have enjoyed great returns since then, it would be wise to re-evaluate their investments to make sure they are in line with their time horizon. Many Ideal-LIVING readers were still working and still had many years to retirement in 2008; but now that they are closer to retirement, it is important that they evaluate their current situation.

People today are living longer, and this forces us to evaluate longevity risks. According to the Wall Street Journal, there is a 50 percent chance that a Baby Boomer today will live to age 90. If you don’t plan accordingly, your income could run out before you do. Most people think if they draw 4 percent out per year, they will have enough income to last. Some have recently argued that number should be about 2.5 to 3 percent per year. In the first three years of retirement, the average retiree tends to spend approximately 20 percent more and this overdraw can also contribute to insufficient sums for the later years if not planned for correctly.

Don’t forget inflation. At above a three percent inflation rate, the value of a dollar in 20 years is about half of what it is worth today. A 2018 Bankrate survey concluded that some Americans are still risk averse and have left a large amount of money sitting in cash. If the bank gives you a yield at a rate under inflation, you are actually earning a negative return during that time. Be aware of how inflation affects your bottom line and focus on inflation adjusted income in retirement.

5. LACKING PROTECTION FOR YOUR FAMILY AND ESTATE

According to Fidelity, a 65-year-old couple retiring this year will need an average of $275,000 to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses. And that doesn’t include the costs associated with long-term nursing home care.

Often times, retirees might have a last will and testament, but not a comprehensive estate plan. Adequate protections should be evaluated for health, as well as leaving a legacy. The US Census indicates that one in five Americans may become disabled for a period of time. Do you have a plan in the event a disability occurs years before retirement due to an accident or poor health? Do you have a plan to deal with the rising cost of long-term care (LTC) insurance? According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, around 70 percent of adults over the age of 65 will need long-term care insurance at some point in their lives, and it is usually at the tail end of a financial plan when assets tend to be at their lowest point after 20 to 30 years of withdrawals. Consider ways to mitigate those long-term care costs. Traditional long-term care can be a good option for some as they can lock in a specific benefit and have the ability to grow it to offset inflation. The downside is that if you don’t use the benefit, you typically lose it, and as you get older, the premiums are not fixed and can go up over time. A Hybrid Life Insurance policy with a long-term care rider allows one to have a life insurance benefit while still working or in retirement, with the ability to use some or all of their death benefit for the purposes of long-term care in their later years. This option can give clients the ability to pay for a benefit that they know will be used in one way or another, potentially eliminating the feeling of “use it or lose it” that some may have with traditional policies. Also, Hybrid policies can be structured with “fixed” premiums or a lump-sum and therefore, reduce the risk of rising premiums that some may experience traditionally. The downside is that underwriting requirements are typically more stringent since you are underwriting

a death benefit and living benefit together. Many individuals have older cash value policies without a LTC benefit that may consider re-evaluating those policies to create a new benefit. The third option is asset-based; using either retirement accounts or cash to generate an annuity stream during retirement that can continue to pay for long-term care costs later in life. This option can also be useful to individuals who are not able to pass the medical examination requirements of traditional or hybrid policies, as well as those in risk classes such as smokers and those with Diabetes where the price may be prohibitive.

Enjoy A New Option for Retirement

As far as a strategy for estate planning is concerned, all pre-tax retirement plans and traditional IRAs require a minimum annual distribution after reaching the age of 70 and a half. Most take that distribution and simply put it into a savings account. Other options can be to take the cash and invest post-tax, to contribute to long-term care protection, or to leave a legacy. What type of legacy would you like to leave? You could gift money to your children/grandchildren, set up an endowment for charity, or protect the assets in a trust. There are countless options and strategies to create the legacy you choose.

Multi-Generational Housing Is Making Its Way Across the U.S.

Living with a different adult generation of one’s family has often been a comedy theme on television, from Archie Bunker and his combative son-inlaw to Frasier and his dad, and Seinfeld’s George Costanza living at home. The tensions of close living quarters leave us boiling over in laughter.

But, the reality of more and more baby boomers entering into their silver years is a serious matter, so creative and welcome solutions are emerging as multigenerational living becomes an increasing reality.

Multi-generational living is described as at least two adult generations over the age of 25 living together. That could entail grandparents living with their children, an adult child moving back home for a while, an adult child with special needs, or even a fourgeneration home. All of this comes with the goal of gaining quality family time, increasing family safety, perhaps sharing responsibilities and expenses, and balancing togetherness and privacy.

One of the leaders in the design of multigenerational homes—also referred to as multi-gen or

next-gen homes—is New York-based homebuilder K. Hovnanian, whose chief marketing officer, Ron Nelson, has been tracking the burgeoning interest in next-gen homes for several years.

“A study from the Pew Research Center describes that 64 million people, fully 20 percent of the U.S.

136 | ideal-LIVING.com Home | Multi-Generational Housing
“Our entry into next-gen homes began to grow organically after several homebuyers requested we design additional private living space for aging parents.”

population, now live in multi-generational households. That number is up from just 12 percent in 1980,” says Nelson.

He adds that, “Our entry into next-gen homes began to grow organically over five years ago after several homebuyers requested we design additional private living space for aging parents. We progressed in earnest with the concept three years ago, developing dedicated floor plans for the increasing demand for multi-generational living.”

K. Hovnanian, which was founded in 1959, has communities in 15 states across the country, all of which are inviting destinations for building a next-gen home. While a variety of floor plans are available, the company website (www.khov.com) features the Extra Suite and Extra Suite+ layouts, both of which offer a spacious living room, bedroom, and bath. The Extra Suite+ also includes a kitchenette with refrigerator, sink, and dishwasher.

I n most cases, their next-gen suites can be accessed by both a private entry off the front porch and through a door that opens from the interior of the main house.

Nelson offered one caveat on the dual entry. “We actually build a couple of different ways, as some municipalities allow a second door main entrance while others require you to enter the entire home through one main entrance.”

T he effect of the single entry regulation is to discourage homeowners from creating a rental unit or Airbnb. Be sure to check the local ordinances before getting started.

K. Hovnanian will shortly be adding a feature to its website that will allow you to identify through an icon which of their communities currently has an Extra Suite model or spec home to tour or purchase. For those active adults with aging parents, it’s even possible to build a next-gen home at one of KHov’s Four Seasons communities designed for 55+ homebuyers.

137 ideal-LIVING.com |

T he resort-like Four Seasons communities dot the Atlantic coast and range all the way to Arizona and California. A regional sales center in Edison, NJ, is a convenient place for homebuyers in the northeast to virtually explore floor plans, amenities, and lifestyle benefits of the Four Seasons without having to travel far.

I nterestingly, some people choose a multi-generational home for nontraditional reasons, as the extra private space works wonderfully for relatives or guests on an extended stay, or for an au pair or nanny. Sometimes roommates will even buy a next-gen home to share expenses while building equity instead of renting an apartment.

But, for Terri and Russell Ashe of Summerville, SC, just outside Charleston, the choice was fundamental. With an aging mother, the couple opted to move just 23 minutes up the road from their longtime home in Goose Creek to KHov’s Four Seasons at Lakes of Cane Bay 55+ community.

Some people chooose a multigenerational home for non-traditional reasons, as the extra private space works wonderfully for relatives or guests on an extended stay.

T here, they had their architect change the wall layout and convert an office space into an extra suite for Mom. Says Russell, “We were able to create a comfortable space with a living area, bedroom, bathroom, microwave, and sink.”

T he couple also created a separate HVAC zone for mom’s suite, as “she likes to keep her space toasty warm.”

Four Seasons at Lakes of Cane Bay is just 40 minutes from the historic charm, worldclass dining, and ocean breezes of Charleston, the country’s most decorated city. Lakes of Cane Bay itself offers resort-style living with countless amenities, including a 300-acre lake system, lakefront clubhouse, marina, saline pools, amphitheater, pickleball courts, and more.

The Evolution of Inclusion

Dataw Island Club Now Offers Multi-Generational Memberships

Dataw Island has been a residential destination for at least 6,000 years and probably longer. Located in the heart of the South Carolina lowcountry, about 15 minutes east of Beaufort, the island was originally home to Native Americans, and its name is derived from a legendary chief of the Muskogean tribe, King Datha.

The modern history of Dataw began in 1983 when ALCOA bought the entire island to build a master-planned community beneath the natural canopy of towering live oaks and surrounded by pristine tidal wetlands. The first Dataw Island Club amenities added were a pair of superb 18-hole golf courses by designers Tom Fazio and Arthur Hills that remain today among the region’s topranked private layouts. The mansion-style clubhouse features both fine- and casual-dining restaurants. The Dataw Tennis Center is likewise a top-tier facility, and the Dataw Community Center features indoor and outdoor pools, the latest fitness equipment, dance and aerobics studios, spa services, and activity rooms where dozens of interest clubs hold their meetings.

All Dataw Island property owners become members of the Dataw Island Club at the time of their purchase. There’s a one-time initiation fee paid at closing on a home or unimproved lot, plus annual dues and fees that are pro-rated for the first year. Both types of property owners are considered to be resident members and enjoy access to community center facilities and services, clubhouse dining options, golf/tennis practice areas, community clubs, docks, and kayak launches.

For many years, Dataw has been at the forefront of customdesignable participation programs and fee plans. Members can elect to add flexible sports-amenity options. For instance, there are annual unlimited and restricted golf options, as well as available singlemonth unlimited and per-round packages. Similar choices are also offered for play at the Tennis Center and on the croquet lawn. All three offer additional one-time and weekly fees for the guests of members.

Dataw Island Club membership is also available to non-property owners, which entitles them to standard facility and services access, similar to residents. There’s a one-time initiation fee and monthly dues if one of the sports-amenity or clubhouse dining-only options are chosen. Even long-term renters on Dataw Island can join the club with a variety of flexible month-to-month plans that can include golf course and tennis center access.

Dale and Diane Goodrich moved to Dataw from Cleveland in 2008. He and others on the Dataw Island Club Board of Directors have been advocates for the expansion of membership options with flexible plans. But, even those progressive policies weren’t enough for the 2020s.

According to a recent article in Realtor Magazine, up to 41 percent

140 | ideal-LIVING.com
Memberships | Multi-Generational

of Americans in the home-buying market consider accommodating an elderly parent or adult child to be a factor in their purchasing decision. That conclusion was based on the results of a nationwide survey, but the Dataw Island Club leadership had already seen evidence of the trend in their own backyard and decided to address it.

“Like many communities,” Dale says, “the standard resident membership at Dataw Island Club extends automatically to children up to the age of 21 and to any age for those who have special needs. We’ve now designed a multi-generational policy that allows parents, kids, and grandchildren over 21 and siblings of homeowner members, to opt into membership benefits for a monthly fee of just $75. Those multi-generational family members can enjoy the fitness center, use of the indoor and outdoor pools, the sports practice facilities, and other amenities such as the free library, bocce courts, and dining. Perhaps most importantly, it’s also the gateway to participating in our community’s many social activities.”

Long-time Dataw residents Pete and Pat Stevens are among those who appreciate the expansion of membership opportunities. “We moved here from New Jersey 20 years ago,” Pete says, “and two years ago our daughter Kathy and her son joined us from Greenwich, CT. This new program is really a great thing because it has allowed her to become connected with many community activities, and our grandson especially enjoys working out at the fitness center.”

“With multi-generational living becoming more and more popular,” Dale says, “it was not only an issue affecting our existing members, it was also something in which we wanted to be proactive and make sure that our membership policy continued to be welcoming and inclusive. We want to make certain that everyone who comes to live on Dataw Island has the same opportunities to get involved and feel like they are fully part of the community.”

Family Values Virginia’s Van Metre Homes Embraces 55+ Market

Van Metre Homes was founded in 1955 by Albert G. Van Metre and the company has been building residential communities and custom homes in Northern Virginia ever since. Albert’s children, Beau Van Metre and Allison Van Metre Paley, are the second generation of family ownership and part of a company management that includes grandchildren and in-laws.

The Northern Virginia region has grown significantly over the past 65 years. Van Metre Homes has expanded with it and established a business reputation rooted in the traditional family values of honesty, loyalty, and giving back to the community: Van Metre is a three-time winner of the Washington Business Journal ’s prestigious “Corporate Philanthropy Award.”

55 and Better

Van Metre Homes is currently involved in the development of more than a dozen Northern Virginia multi-generational communities. But, staying ahead in business means

keeping an eye on the trends, including a maturing regional demographic and long-time Van Metre homeowners who are ready to downsize.

So, it’s not surprising that three of the newest and most popular Van Metre developments—The Crest of Alexandria, The Signature in Broadlands, and Birchwood at Brambleton—have been designed specifically for active adults age 55 and over. In fact, the Brambleton master-planned community was Virginia’s top seller in 2019, and Van Metre’s Birchwood enclave there is leading the way in 2020 with 32 homes sold in January and February alone.

Home designs in Van Metre’s active-adult communities offer single-level living spaces and optional private elevators in multi-story residences. Resort-style amenities like clubhouses, pools, and fitness facilities add to the appeal. But, the biggest draw may be the Northern Virginia locations with convenient proximity to leading medical centers, international airports, outdoor recreation sites—and the grandchildren.

Van Metre Design Center

Having found the ideal community, the first stop for new-home customers is the Van Metre Design Centre in Broadlands, Virginia. Whether browsing on a weekend or keeping a weekday appointment with one of Van Metre’s experienced consultants, the Design Centre offers a relaxed atmosphere for considering all of the available choices. Room by room, the design team guides buyers through a hands-on experience—seeing the colors and styles, even feeling the textures—that turns imagination into reality.

Van Metre designs ensure that every home is as unique as the family that lives there. The process starts with choosing the right basic floor plan from among the company’s pre-designed portfolio homes, which can then be customized to produce one-of-a-kind interior spaces. Kitchens and bathrooms get special attention: everyday functionality for each family’s specific lifestyle is considered in the layout, then tailored with a wide-ranging choice of floorings, cabinets, lighting fixtures, appliances, sinks, faucets, tubs, and showers. The organization of storage spaces in those areas, as well as bedrooms, closets, garages, and home offices, is another flexible priority.

Outdoor spaces can also be custom-designed, whether it’s a modest-size patio where couples can enjoy their morning coffee or more expansive covered or uncovered spaces with fireplaces and outdoor kitchens for entertaining guests in the evenings. And, if eventually another bedroom is called for or an existing space needs to be remodeled, Van Metre’s custom home entity, Design + Build, can take care of that, too.

A Natural Fit

A commitment to sound environmental practices is Van Metre company policy, from masterplan concepts that enhance natural waterways and create shaded hiking trails to the finishing touches on every residence. Van Metre homes are designed to conserve energy and built with eco-friendly materials. Exterior wall weather-resistant barriers and high-grade ceiling insulation are standard in all new homes. Insulated windows, LED lights, and state-of-the-art appliances save power and money. Only environmentally-friendly paints, sealants, finishes, and termite controls are used on the inside, while tree preservation and native-plant landscaping enhance the natural feel throughout every Van Metre community.

Sustainable Flooring Options

Nothing compares to wood floors. They add warmth, depth, and beauty to any room and value to any home. The problem is that wood isn’t always the most sustainable choice. However, that doesn’t have to be the case. There are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified products that are from sources that are sustainably managed as a choice for new flooring. There are wood flooring options available that are recycled, including reclaimed and salvaged wood products.

Reclaimed flooring is milled from old structures, piers, dismantled homes, and even sunken logs recovered from the bottom of rivers. Salvaged wood comes from many sources such as pallets, shipping crates, and even old flooring reclaimed from another structure. While recycled flooring is often more expensive due to the cost of salvaging the wood, the flooring made from this recovered wood has character and history. It qualifies as recycled content for LEED certification.

Cork—It’s not just for wine

Next time you break open your favorite bottle of wine, take a second to contemplate the cork. Cork is one of the most versatile, useful, and sustainable products and has become a great option in flooring.

Cork is the bark of the cork oak tree. The bark is harvested from those trees for the first time at 25 years, and because it doesn’t harm the tree, the bark can be harvested every nine years afterward. It is both sustainable, because of the harvesting practices, and recyclable, with used wine corks recycled to make new flooring.

The cork for flooring is highly compressed so that it’s harder and more durable than the wine cork you are used to. Still, it retains its natural characteristics, such as noise dampening, insulating, and providing a surface that causes less leg fatigue. Additionally, it’s lightweight, hypoallergenic, fire and insect resistant, moisture resistant, and as easy to maintain as wood flooring. So, maybe ending up on the floor after a bottle of wine isn’t such a bad thing for those with cork.

Recycled Glass Instead of Tile

While you’re considering your cork, you can also consider your bottle as well for a potential new source of flooring. Many homes have used recycled glass for bathroom walls and kitchen backsplashes, but more and more glass tiles are also being used as flooring, especially in bathrooms and kitchens. Additionally, if you have a more modern flare, recycled glass is being used in combination with colored epoxy resins to produce a wide variety of terrazzo flooring options that are both beautiful and durable.

Bamboo—Sustainable and Economic

Bamboo flooring is one of the greenest and economical choices for home flooring. Bamboo isn’t wood but actually a fast-growing grass that is cut and compressed to make flooring. As flooring, it’s dense and hard. The surface may scratch more quickly than traditional hardwoods, but can be refinished just like other wood floors.

Bamboo offers a clean, modern look and has limited tonal shades, so it isn’t fit for every style. When looking to buy, avoid manufacturers that use volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the manufacturing process. If you’re unsure, you can refer to the Forestry Stewardship Council to ensure you get the best and most sustainable bamboo flooring for your home.

A Contemporary Look

Marmoleum, you say, what’s that?

Well, Marmoleum is like linoleum with the exception that it’s made from allnatural products and is a USDA biobased, Allergy and Asthma Friendly, and SMART certified product. It also comes in sheets, tiles, and engineered planks that click together to form a seamless floor surface.

Because it’s non-toxic and antimicrobial, it’s a great surface for kitchens and baths, and it’s a completely safe and natural alternative instead of linoleum.

Don’t Forget the Carpet

No conversation about flooring would be complete without discussing carpeting. Most modern carpet is made from man-made fibers and is petroleum-based, but there are natural alternatives.

Wool is likely the best option. Not only is it all-natural and non-toxic, but it improves air quality by capturing contaminants and allergens. It’s also durable, cleanable, and totally biodegradable. The downside to wool is its cost—it’s likely among the more expensive options. Other natural fiber flooring options for carpet and rugs include cotton, jute, sisal, and seagrass.

When natural fibers are impractical or costly, you may wish to consider carpet made from recycled materials. Carpet made from recycled PET is sold under the brand names of Resistron and Permalon and is made from recycled beverage bottles. Also, this carpet can be down recycled into insulation and stuffing for furniture.

If you can’t use natural or recycled carpet, many carpet manufacturers are working to be greener by improving their manufacturing processes to be more sustainable. Companies like Mohawk, Shaw, Milliken, Bentley, Price Street, and C&A have carpet recycling and reuse programs that take your old carpet and recycle, repurpose, and reuse it, keeping these materials from the landfill.

The easiest place to start going green? At home.

Where’s the place you spend the most time? In your home.

When you’re thinking about ways to improve your carbon footprint on the world, home is perhaps the easiest place to make incremental improvements with big payoff for the environment. Eco-friendly products have become more prevalent in the last decade, and they’ve also become more attainable and cost-effective, meaning you’ve got options to choose from beyond solar panels and other mainstay eco-friendly home improvements.

When you’re building a new home or remodeling your existing one, it’s very simple to incorporate environmentally-friendly products and materials. In fact, it’s hardly different from choosing traditional products. To make it easier to select the best options for your family, you can find environmental consultants who can suggest improvements on your house plans, or just ask your developer about including some of the options below to make your home, beautiful and eco-friendly.

Bamboo

Not just for panda bears and desk plants! Conserve timber resources by replacing hardwood with bamboo. You can use it for flooring, countertops, furniture, and anywhere you need wood in your new home. As a plus, bamboo is often stronger, comes in a range of colors and finishes, and can mimic the natural grain of traditional hardwood.

Solar panels

One of the first improvements people think of when going green at home is solar power. Consider installing solar panels to the roof of your home to conserve energy. Solar is becoming more and more affordable with time, and if you can afford the upfront costs, it’s proven to pay off significantly. In certain states, you can receive tax deductions for installing solar panels, so check into these before building.

Reclaimed or recycled tiles

Why use new tiles when you can use reclaimed ones? Often, you can find recycled tile, marble, and siding in local tiling stores. These options can save the landfills from more waste, can be more cost-effective than purchasing new materials, and are often more unique, adding a beautiful one-of-a-kind touch to your home. Many people consider using recycled or reclaimed materials as a decorative flourish, which is also a great way to make your home more eco-friendly. Invest in new materials and incorporate recycled materials in smaller quantities in special places.

Living walls

Popular in office spaces and public areas, living walls are great for homes too. Imagine greenery blooming off the side of your deck or inside on a well-lit wall. Living walls allow you to literally go green in your home. These do great things for the environment and the air quality inside your home. They act as natural air purifiers and help eliminate VOCs created by many modern products like cleaning products, scented candles, and more.

LEED appliances

When you’re choosing appliances, look for eco-friendly logos (usually marked with a green leaf), or check for LEED-certified appliances. These look and work just as well as other top tier appliances but have improvements and options to help save energy. For instance, find a dishwasher with an eco-friendly mode, and select washer and dryer options with a light cycle or “less dry” setting.

Dual flush toilets

Did you know that flushing the toilet uses 1.5 gallons of water every time? Invest in dual flush toilets for your home to cut down on water (saving you money, too.)

In the place you spend the most time, why not try green products at home? You’ll feel great about your choices, your home will look beautiful, and the trees around you will whisper “thank you!”

Water is the Heart and Soul of Waterways

Betsy Shanley is fast-approaching her 67th trip around the sun and is more than ready for the next chapter of life. Having done her time in a high-pressured job, she is looking forward to exchanging her daily commute and briefcase for fresh air and a kayak.

Boldly transitioning from the hustle and bustle of Washington, D.C., to the natural beauty and peace of Richmond Hill, Georgia, Shanley is crystal clear about what she’s looking for in her forever home. “It’s all about the three Ws,” smiles Shanley, “woods, water, and weather!”

As the name Waterways suggests, this Fletcher Davis master-planned community places water at the heart of its design. Five miles of lagoons weave alongside untouched nature, and numerous lakes provide ample boating opportunities and wildlife habitat. “Being near water is like coming home again,” says Shanley. She wanted natural landscapes over golf courses and a family-friendly community rather than a 55+ set-up, and Waterways checks both of those boxes.

The warmer climate was another influential factor in her decision-making process, as being able to enjoy the great outdoors and all the peace it has to offer is important

to her. “The closer I get to nature, the more I feel like I’m decompressing layer after layer,” she explains.

With a wide variety of homes to choose from, Shanley is exchanging her current three-story family house with a large yard in D.C. for a much more manageable, single-level home with a double garage for plenty of storage. The yard is smaller, but being surrounded by the abundant nature of Waterways fulfills all of her outdoor living requirements. Planning to age-in-place, Shanley was guided by her realtor to find exactly what she wanted down to the last detail.

Why is Waterways above and beyond so many other communities in the area? In addition to the familyfriendly atmosphere, tranquil setting, and ideal price range, Shanley took the fact that her realtor lives in this community as a good sign. “I believe that you’ve got to bloom where you’re planted!” she declares, and Waterways is clearly the ideal setting to do just that.
