NEVER MET A STRANGER.

It takes a place like Ave Maria to keep up with a friendship ambassador like Jared. He’s always on the go, taking pictures and making new friends. Jared’s mom and dad, Robin and Kim, talk about being in the Town Center and having a couple come up and introduce themselves. “Jared told us we should meet you,” they said. Jared doesn’t talk, but his warmth and friendliness transcends words. So, when he types a thought out on his pad, you listen. And your life is better for it.

Friends and family are the best part of the story in Ave Maria, A Big Kind of Small Town.

TOWN IN NATURE

WELCOME TO WILDLIGHT

We like to think it’s the best of both worlds. A little town. A little (actually, a lot of) nature. The beachy vibe of Amelia Island in one direction, the culture of Jacksonville in the other. Wildlight is where you can take a trail to tacos. Stroll to sushi. Take dance lessons, get a haircut, or grab a craft beer (or bottle of wine) all right in the neighborhood. Then head out to one of the parks, ponds, or miles of trails right outside your front door.

Speaking of doors, we have a variety of home styles to choose from, too — including a just-for-those-55+ neighborhood by Del Webb, a gated community with its own exclusive amenities.

New homes from the $300s.

Sharing With Friends

This issue encourages you to live the good life, from healthy living to golf and kayaking. But I think one of the most valuable things is sharing the good life with your friends. Recently, my husband and I took a trip to Morocco with a group of friends. Laughter and learning ensued throughout amazing sites from city to city in this ancient land full of friendly, warm people. While we would have enjoyed the trip by ourselves, it only enhanced the experience of sharing it with our friends. The same thing happened when we took a trip with our daughter to Nashville, TN, to visit friends. I assure you that going to Honkey Tonks in the Music City would not have been nearly as fun without friends. So, I encourage you to share this magazine with a few friends and send them to ideal-LIVING.com so you can share your next adventure with them. Even if you don’t decide on the same place to live, you’ll always have somewhere great to visit.

Florida may be on the wish list for this spring, so we’ve included “The Five Floridas” article on page 72 to help you start planning your Spring trips. You may also want to consider a visit to some of Ideal-LIVING’s international communities, such as Greece, Portugal, Costa Rica, Panama, or Mexico.

Talking about the good life… it’s time for me to start paddleboarding at sunrise again. Although I love going in the Winter (with a wetsuit, of course), I generally go in the middle of the day when it’s warmer. But, spring has sprung, and with it comes a whole new season of adventure. Once again, I encourage you to find the things that bring you joy so you can experience the good life every day and share them with a friend.

And, if you want to learn more about how to live the good life, please join me for our Choose Your Ideal Place Webinar Series featuring “The Good Life” on May 2nd at 2pm (see page 61 to RSVP).

HEALTHY LIVING

Healthy lifestyle changes can make us feel younger, happier, and more vibrant. It’s all about creating a body, mind, and spirit balance. This can be done by focusing on maintaining good physical and mental health. When you retire, you are given the gift of time. Gone are the days of getting up, commuting to work, making dinner, and repeating this regime the next day. Now, you have time to exercise, and when you couple that with social activities, you have a winning combination.

Whatever your interests are, you can find people to engage in those activities with you. You can play pickleball in the morning with a group of friends, followed by lunch, then

maybe take an afternoon nap, followed by drinks by the dock watching the sunset over the lake.

Developers of master-planned amenity communities have created them to be centered around living a healthy, happy lifestyle. From the walking trails that meander through the community to the fitness centers with numerous fitness classes and social engagements, many developers have found the fountain of youth.

The benefits of healthy living are immense, and it helps to prevent chronic diseases, promote mental well-being, and increase lifespan.

These communities, nestled in picturesque landscapes, have become sought-after havens for enthusiasts and novices alike, drawn by the allure of a lifestyle that seamlessly blends leisure and recreation.

One significant factor contributing to the heightened interest in golf communities is the growing recognition of golf as a sport that transcends generations. The game’s appeal spans from retirees seeking an active and social pastime to young professionals looking for a sophisticated recreational pursuit. Golf communities offer a unique environment where individuals of all ages can connect, fostering a sense of community and shared passion.

As individuals seek a balanced and fulfilling life, golf communities have positioned themselves at the forefront, offering not just a game, but an entire way of life centered around recreation, social connection, and the appreciation of the great outdoors.

PICKLEBALL ANYONE?

In recent years, pickleball has surged in popularity among individuals over the age of 50, captivating a demographic eager for enjoyable and accessible physical activities. This sport, a fusion of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, offers a low-impact, yet exhilarating way, to stay active and socialize.

For many, pickleball provides a perfect avenue for exercise without placing undue strain on joints or muscles. Its relatively simple rules and smaller court size make it easy to pick up, even for those new to racket sports. The game’s slower pace allows players to engage in friendly competition while still reaping the benefits of physical activity.

Beyond its physical advantages, pickleball fosters a strong

sense of community and camaraderie. Whether played in local parks, community centers, or dedicated pickleball courts within planned communities, the sport creates opportunities for social interaction, laughter, and friendship.

PHILANTHROPY

The chance to give back is something that many retirees take great pride in. After all, how many rounds of golf can you play? Philanthropy and giving back not only benefit others, but also have profound effects on one’s well-being. Research suggests that acts of kindness and generosity can contribute to improved mental and physical health, potentially lengthening one’s life. Engaging in altruistic deeds releases feel-good hormones like oxytocin and dopamine, reducing stress and enhancing overall happiness. Furthermore, a sense of purpose and fulfillment derived from helping others fosters a positive outlook and resilience in the face of life’s challenges. By nurturing connections, building community, and making a meaningful impact, philanthropy becomes a powerful force for personal growth and longevity.

“ Here at Amblebrook, the opportunities to get involved in philanthropic activities are everywhere you look. I’m the secretary of our Veteran’s Club, where our main focus is offering help to Toys for Tots, Tunnels to Towers, Roots for Boots, and many other local charities. We just did a blood drive where I signed up 40 Amblebrook residents to donate. We’ve also held food drives for the local Gettysburg soup kitchen that have been a phenomenal success.

Going to college is no longer just for the young. It’s for the young at heart. If you decide to move to a college town, you too can take lifelong learning classes. Local universities offer a wealth of continuing education and lifelong learning programs tailored to retirees seeking intellecual enrichment. Do you want to learn about art history or technology; what about biology? You can attend lectures, stimulating coursework, and participate in workshops alongside students of all ages. This is a great way to feel younger.

“I moved to Hattiesburg, MS, from Brooklyn few years ago. At 58, I am a doer, and I can’t believe how much there is to do in this town of 45,000. Mom and I have enjoyed being members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Southern Mississippi. They offer all kinds of classes and bring in fascinating guest lecturers. OLLI has enriched our lives, and I’m glad there’s a branch here.”

Find Your Ideal...

DESTINATION

Many people choose a destination that is familiar to them, like somewhere they have vacationed, while others have an extensive search starting with discovering tax-friendly states. Choose a state, then a region, and narrow down to a city and then a community.

63 ideal-LIVING.com | ©2024 GETTYIMAGES.COM

How to Find Your Ideal Destination

Relocating to a new destination is an exciting, yet somewhat daunting prospect. Whether you’re seeking a change of scenery for retirement, a career move, or simply a fresh start, the journey to finding your ideal destination can be both thrilling and overwhelming. Fortunately, with the right tools and guidance, you can navigate this process with confidence and clarity.

1. Consider Your Priorities: Before diving in, take some time to reflect on your priorities and preferences. Consider factors such as climate, cost of living, healthcare options, recreational activities, and community atmosphere. Understanding what matters most to you will narrow down your search and guide you toward destinations that align with your lifestyle goals.

2. Explore Diverse Destinations: Each region comes with its own unique charm and amenities. From coastal communities to mountain retreats, urban hubs to serene countryside, you’ll find a wealth of options to explore.

3. Consider Financial Implications: The top reason that Ideal-LIVING readers seek to relocate involves financial considerations, including housing costs, taxes, insurance, and everyday expenses. Be

sure to assess your financial situation carefully and factor in any potential changes in income or expenses associated with the move.

4. Connect with Community: After you have narrowed your options to a particular country, state, or region, then search for communities that offer activities you seek. Community plays a crucial role in shaping your experience in a new destination. Check out ideal-LIVING.com to compare communities based on area, region, or amenities.

5. Take Advantage of Discovery Travel: You won’t know until you go! Many planned amenity communities offer a “Stay and Play” package that allows you to see what it’s like to live there for a few days. While you’re there, swim in the pool, play a round of golf, explore model homes, and talk with the people who live there.

Finding your ideal destination is a deeply personal journey that requires careful consideration and exploration, but it should also be fun! Happy Travels!

GET LOCAL

DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE MOVING

Even if you’ve already found your ideal residential community for retirement or relocation, investing quality time in learning more about the local area will certainly pay off. Fortunately, you can go online to research just about anything about anywhere, and that’s a great way to start. But to get the complete picture, nothing beats combining that virtual preview with an honest, in-person exploration of your next destination. So, do your homework at home, then make an extended discovery visit to your new hometown and “Get Local” even before you make your move.

66 | ideal-LIVING.com
GET LOCAL

Chattanooga TN

LOCAL NEWS

Tuning in to the local news is a good way to learn about the area where you’ll be living. All newspapers have websites where you can access some content for free or get a fairly low-cost introductory subscription. If you don’t want to pay, check out the free local television station sites for the latest local headlines; you can even watch broadcast replays if you don’t mind a commercial or two. Both media also offer area weather reports and event calendars. Bookmark a few that you like the best and you’ll have them for reference before and after moving.

LOCAL HEALTH CARE

Checking out the quality and convenience of healthcare providers in your new hometown is a premove priority for everyone. Your current medical,

dental, and specialty practices can probably make local referrals. Still, it’s a good idea to visit the nearest full-service hospital and other potential medical provider locations virtually to minimize future surprises. The same is true for the local pharmacy you’ll likely rely on at some point.

Medicare Parts A and B coverage travels with you everywhere in the United States, although you’ll want to update any address changes through the Social Security Administration. However, if you’re still relying on private insurance or have enrolled in a Medicare Advantage or Part D (prescription drug) supplemental plan, check with your insurer before relocating to another state. Whether your plan is transferrable, whether your preferred medical providers are included in the coverage network, and whether the costs will remain the same are all among the important questions to ask ahead of time.

67 ideal-LIVING.com | ©2024 GETTYIMAGES.COM

LOCAL RECREATION

Most master-planned communities have popular recreational amenities like pools, fitness facilities, and even a pickleball court or two, while some larger ones have pretty much everything. But fewer new communities are building their own golf courses these days, so you’ll want to check out the local links if you plan to play in the future. Likewise, nearly all new neighborhoods have nice walking paths for daily strolls, but you may want to find out about the trails at nearby city and state parks if you’re planning more vigorous hiking or biking excursions. Local recreation departments also sponsor tennis and softball leagues, as well as exercise programs and other healthy activities for different age groups.

LOCAL LEARNING

One of the most welcomed trends in retirement living is the growth of lifelong learning opportunities. Many communities offer clubhouse classes and interest-group clubs, but you might have to venture beyond the gates to locate the nearest adult education center. Find out what’s available in your area, including community colleges and private institutions with adult programs; some will even let you audit undergraduate classes for free. And, while you’re on the subject of not spending money to get smarter, visit your nearest local library branch to find out what’s on the shelves and what programs like book clubs, author lectures, and local-history presentations can enrich your life without taxing your budget.

68 | ideal-LIVING.com GET LOCAL

LOCAL MARKETS

There’s a good chance that a national grocery store or warehouse chain has a location near your new residential community. Check to make sure they carry your favorite brands, but take some time to find the local fresh-food market, baker, florist, and other area shops where you’ll likely be doing business. Whether they’re located in a new commercial center or a revitalized historic downtown, start with a leisurely stroll and some window shopping.

©2024 GETTYIMAGES.COM

Most areas also have weekly farmers markets with the best local produce to give you a real sense of what to expect on your dinner table. So, even if you’re not ready to stock up, a little local browsing now will prepare you for efficient and successful shopping later.

LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT

The search for your new date-night restaurant or that cozy coffee shop where you can relax with friends may start online, but you can only experience taste and smell in person. So, plan to check out a few during your pre-move visit and list others that seem appealing. Take a similar approach to the local art scene. You may only have time to visit some of them, but try to catch at least one exhibition at a local museum or show at a performing arts center to get a sample of your coming entertainment attractions. And, there’s no better way to get the feel of your new locale than by attending a seasonal community arts, food, or music festival. If you’ve been doing so for years in your current hometown, continuing to support local restaurants, arts programs, and event celebrations should be part of a socially healthy lifestyle in your new destination.

LOCAL SERVICES

If you regularly attend religious services, finding your nearest house of worship should be on your pre-move checklist. It’s also a great place, along with the local United Way chapter and similar nonprofit organizations, to discover what volunteer opportunities are available in your new location. Many residential communities also sponsor service clubs and fundraisers supporting local charities. However you decide to donate your time, you’re sure to make new friends when you’re working together to help your neighbors’ lives improve, too.

These are just a few ideas for making the best use of your time and energy in exploring a new location. You may have some additional items to include that are especially important to you. The point is to find out as much as possible online, but there’s no substitute for taking a flight or a road trip to your chosen destination to genuinely appreciate where you’re heading.

Many leading retirement and residential communities offer twoor three-day Discovery Packages that are a great value and a fine introduction to your immediate neighborhood. But, if you’re getting ready to undertake a major move to a new community in a new state, extending that visit for at least a few more days of personal exploration only makes sense. The sooner you can “Get Local” with your new surroundings, the sooner you’ll start to feel like a local yourself.

The Five Floridas The5 FLORIDAS

Florida is a kaleidoscopic mosaic of natural and cultural diversity mapped with opulence, playfulness, nature’s sublimity, and a storied past. Its five distinct regions are as varied as siblings are known to be but as complementary to one another as yin and yang, with white sand beaches and crystal-clear water of the northeast as breathtaking as the natural springs gurgling among century-old mangroves and bald cypress in Florida’s hill country. The character of each region – topographically, culturally, and environmentally – beckons visitors for profoundly discernible reasons, all of which appeal viscerally and universally.

The distinct appeal of each of Florida’s five regions, coupled with 75 and sunny winter days, proximity to natural wonders, and Florida’s eclectic culture, tends to turn visitors into residents rather quickly (which, you may have heard, happens from time to time).

Relocating to Florida is also quite appealing for its exceptional tax policies. Florida has no Social Security tax, no state income tax, no estate tax, no inheritance tax, and no tax on retirement income, i.e. IRAs, 401ks, etc.

In the end, though, lifestyle draws people to a place. And, the five Floridas roll out the welcome mat in wildly different but equally attractive ways.

Northeast Florida

The Northeast region is a roller coaster for the senses. First, you land in bustling Jacksonville, where business is booming alongside the art, cultural, and culinary scenes. Then, stroll through tranquil St. Augustine along cobblestone streets in the oldest city in the country. Finally, you land in Daytona Beach, where engines roar at the Daytona Motor Speedway and in annual motorcycle rallies. Nature preserves, Canaveral National Seashore, and an eclectic urban setting are in the background. This area is for adventure seekers and variety-lovers.

The four seasons are far more pronounced here than in the region’s southern counterparts, which draws people from around the world looking for a more balanced but temperate climate. The stories that seep through Spanish-colonial architecture and historic alleys of St. Augustine, Jacksonville’s tech-driven economy, and the beaches and protected land that flank Daytona’s urban center also have a bit of a pull.

Here are a few focal points you may want to add to your list on your discovery trip.

International Cuisine

Columbia Restaurant is a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage. It represents a culinary journey through Spain with its award-winning cuisine, encapsulated in the authenticity of dishes like “Paella a la Valenciana” and “Pollo Riojana.”

Orsay, located in the heart of Jacksonville, blends French cuisine’s elegance with Southern hospitality’s warmth. From the decadent duck confit to oysters on the half shell delivered from the Atlantic daily when in season.

The Cellar Restaurant, housed in the former winter home of President Warren G. Harding, transports diners both in time and place. The Cellar offers a fine Italian dining experience straight from the kitchens of Venice with an ambiance that harkens back to its historical roots.

Year-round Exploration & Entertainment

• Take in St. Augustine’s historic streets.

• Catch a wave at Jacksonville Beach.

• Kayak through the Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve.

• Catch live music with the beach in the background at the Daytona Beach Bandshell concerts.

• Tour the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Jacksonville.

• Teleport to the Golden Age of Piracy at the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum.

Northwest Florida

Known as a resort destination with Panama City and Destin leading the charge, the Northwest is flanked with Caribbean-clear water that tends to draw a crowd. As a result, nightlife and culinary prowess abound. But, because the panhandle is still part of the sub-tropical sunshine state, it’s also a naturalist’s paradise. Vibrant and salty foliage and native blooms appease the naturalist’s palette along paths at Henderson Beach State Park, as well as surrounding nature parks. Gulf Islands National Seashore and Apalachicola National Forest should be on every nature lover’s list amidst days spent in the hammock and snorkeling along the crystal-clear coast.

History buffs flock to Pensacola Village, one of the oldest U.S. settlements, the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee, and Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island.

Central Florida

Central Florida has struck a balance not many regions of the country are able to achieve. From Walt Disney, Epcot Center, and Universal Studios magic worlds and Orlando’s booming tech-centered economy to the soft magic of natural springs and days spent in a kayak under a canopy of trees through the rivers of the hill country, mind, body, and spirit are all well fed here.

Here are a few of our Northwest favorites:

Culinary Interest

The Louisiana Lagniappe offers a taste of New Orleans in the heart of Destin. Its menu is chock full of Creole and Cajun favorites, set against the backdrop of stunning waterfront views.

Summer Kitchen in Rosemary Beach, just 34 miles from Panama City, is the perfect stop en route to Nigel’s Bananas in Seaside for a frozen banana or two. This friendly spot is the ideal midweek breakfast and lunch stop for southern-leaning foodies. Dinner and cocktails are weekends-only which just adds appeal. Start with the tuna dip and whipped feta, then move on to the smoked tuna BLT.

Add to your itinerary:

• Take your time at Destin’s Henderson Beach State Park.

• Stroll through the historic streets of Pensacola.

• Rent a boat to fish the Gulf’s abundant waters or cruise along the coast with family or friends to Rosemary Beach and Seaside.

• Hike or bike in the Point Washington State Forest.

• Attend the Seabreeze Jazz Festival in Panama City Beach, one of the most well-attended jazz festivals in the country.

Culinary Excellence Meets Ambience

Tapa Toro combines contemporary Spanish cuisine with a vibrant, energetic atmosphere and live flamenco dancing. In ICON Park™ in Orlando, Tapa Toro is known for their paella pit, extensive tapas menu, and sangria flights.

Ivy House Restaurant in Williston, FL, is known for its “Southern comfort food with flair,” including famous dishes like fried chicken, shrimp, and grits. Southern grace and elegance meet culinary excellence amidst the beauty of Ocala’s lush landscape.

Everyone’s Doing It and Hidden Gems

• Marvel at the magic of Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and all the rest.

• Discover the wonders of the Kennedy Space Center.

• Swim in the crystal-clear waters of Silver Springs State Park.

• Stroll through the lush landscapes of Bok Tower Gardens.

• Spend time at Juniper Springs and Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest.

• Kayak or canoe on Peace River.

• Don’t miss the charming town of Ocala.

Southwest Florida

Natural and material opulence are both rampant in southwest Florida. Sarasota and Marco Island’s sophisticated charm turns to exclusive boutiques, high-end resorts, and restaurants in Naples. And opportunities to explore nature’s perfection surround it all.

Southeast Florida

Affluence and nature engage in a similarly intimate dance in the Southeast, most notably in Ft. Lauderdale, known as the “Venice of Italy” with its complex canal system and proximity to the Everglades. Meanwhile, Las Olas Boulevard, housing some of the finest high-end retail shops in the country, runs through it all, flanked with mega yachts and multi-million dollar waterfront homes.

The dance continues in Miami and Palm Beach. Miami is known as the gateway to the Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, and Palm Beach boasts John D. MacArthur Beach State Park and breathtaking beaches. Each maintains the rhythm of nature in all its grandeur alongside the luxe lifestyle that saturates the Southeast.

Here are a few things you may want to add to your discovery list:

Where to dine

Indigenous, situated in Sarasota’s historic Towles Court, is celebrated for its commitment to sustainable and seasonal cuisine and for its Chef, Steve Phelps, a James Beard nominee.

Bodega on Central, in the heart of St. Petersburg, boasts authentic Latin street food and a lively atmosphere.

Osteria Tulia in Naples transports diners to the Italian countryside with its rustic farmhouse ambiance and authentic Sicilian cuisine.

Beach Bliss and Artistic Flair

• Retreat to the pristine beaches of Siesta Key.

• Tour the Ringling Museum in Sarasota.

• Kayak through the mangroves of the Ten Thousand Islands.

It’s Easier to Purchase Property in Costa Rica Than You Might Think

With so many of our readers considering relocating to Costa Rica, Ideal-LIVING magazine reached out to Sonia Elena Aragón Muñoz, Director of Real Estate Department of Costa Rican firm Quatro Legal (sam@ quatro.legal https://quatro.legal/ ) to give readers the ins and outs of purchasing property in Costa Rica.

Gone are the days when locating Costa Rica on a map was a challenge for many. Today, the mention of Costa Rica resonates widely; it’s either a place they’ve visited, plan to see, or know someone who has made it their home or investment hub.

Costa Rica has steadily ascended as one of the premier destinations for retirement, relocation, or securing a second home. Since 2020, the surge of interest in this small yet nature-rich country has skyrocketed. It is now reported that around 120,000 U.S. citizens now call Costa Rica home. Quatro Legal facilitates approximately 250 property transactions annually, with an overwhelming 98% involving foreigners seeking to relocate or invest.

What draws people to Costa Rica? The reasons are as diverse as they are compelling. From its idyllic weather boasting temperatures ranging from 63°F to 88°F throughout the year to its remarkable decision

to abolish the military in 1948, prioritizing education and fostering the strongest democracy in Latin America, Costa Rica presents a compelling case for those seeking a vibrant lifestyle.

The essence of Pura Vida permeates every aspect of Costa Rican life, underpinned by the country’s astonishing biodiversity, encompassing 6% of the world’s total within a territory smaller than West Virginia. With access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and an ideal geographical position for cultivating the best coffee in the world (Yes, I understand this is a controversial statement, but I stand by it!), Costa Rica embodies a tapestry of natural wonders and cultural richness.

However, one of the most significant draws lies in the ease of purchasing property as a foreigner, offering advantages unparalleled by other international destinations.

So, what makes buying property in Costa Rica so appealing?

Fee simple titles. Foreigners are allowed to own fee simple titles. No difference exists between locals and non-nationals regarding ownership and possession of title. (Except for property located within 656 ft from the shoreline. For these properties, some restrictions may apply).

Residency. Investing US$150,000.00 or more in Costa Rica makes you eligible to apply for residency, which allows you to stay in the country legally, have a one-time exoneration of import fees on household, goods, and two cars, access to universal single-payer health care system (ranked as one of the top in Latin America) and the possibility to apply for exemption for capital gain tax.

Even if you are not interested in applying for residency, last year, the government extended the term of the tourist visa from 90 days to 180 days.

Escrow. It is possible to use a USA-based escrow to hold the funds while the real estate process is ongoing. This allows you to make local wires for funds to be reflected in the escrow account on the same day and pay no minimum bank commissions.

Banking. Foreigners can open bank accounts in Costa Rica in State or private banks, have debit cards, and even be eligible for financing upon compliance with standard requirements.

Property taxes. Property taxes nationwide are 0.25% of the purchase price per year. They can be paid quarterly.

Territorial taxation system. Costa Rica has a territorial taxation system, meaning you will not be taxed for economic activities performed abroad.

Legal structure. Property can be owned directly by individuals or through legal entities. It’s common for foreigners to use corporations to hold property, specifically S.A. (comparable to an Inc) and S.R.L. (comparable to an LLC).

Pass-through entity. The IRS classifies S.R.L corporations as a pass-through entity, meaning that the income generated by the business is not taxed at the entity level but is passed through to the individual owners or investors, making it very attractive for tax purposes for US citizens holding property with an S.R.L.

State planning. Foreigners can grant a Will in Costa Rica to govern their assets in the country. It is advisable they do it. They can even connect their Costa Rica Will with any state planning structure abroad, like a Living Will or trust of any kind. This way, the rules for executing the Costa Rican Will shall be followed by those established in the foreign structure.

Community and expat networks. Costa Rica has a thriving expatriate community, primarily on the coasts. Expats often establish supportive networks, making integrating into the local community easier.

Costa Rica’s stable political environment, stunning landscapes, and welcoming culture make it an enticing destination for investing in real estate. As you embark on this exciting journey, remember to work closely with legal and real estate professionals to consider the unique opportunities that Costa Rica offers. Check out WeRCR.net for real estate opportunities around the country.

Leading active-lifestyle communities offer unique instructional programs to get new players of all ages into the game

THE CLUBS AT ST. JAMES

Southport, North Carolina

Continuing their most successful instructional programs and adding new ones keeps The Clubs at St. James golf staff busy in 2024.

PGA Professional Scott Newell is the club’s Director of Instruction. “Our goal is to create a fun, engaging, and informative learning environment for our members,” Newell says. “It’s also a chance to make new friends and enjoy all that St. James has to offer on and off the course.”

Among the most popular programs is GROW (Golf Ready Only Women), a five-day school exclusively for ladies that starts with the basics of grip and posture before moving on to fundamental driving, chipping, and putting techniques. A similar Get Golf Ready program for men is also offered.

Beginning golfers can then sharpen their skills at a Pop-Up Clinic or enroll in the Short-Game Golf School, a once-a-week program over five weeks that helps players to refine their play on and around the

greens. Newell has created the Cattail Starter Program for more focused instruction, which consists of six one-on-one sessions ranging from the basic swing to mental strategies and decision-making skills.

Debuting this year is a five-session school for new players who want to take their games to a new level. The three-to-one student/teacher ratio allows for more personalized instruction, and, like the ShortGame and Cattail programs, on-course instruction is part of the curriculum. “Getting out on the golf course with your teacher is a great way to develop playing skills, as well as learning the game’s rules and etiquette,” Newell says.

Located within the St. James residential community and near the North Carolina coastal town of Southport, The Clubs at St. James features play on four of the region’s top-rated private courses, including the 27-hole Members Club design by Hale Irwin and Tim Cate.

THE LANDINGS GOLF & ATHLETIC CLUB

Skidaway Island, Georgia

The Golf Performance Center is a technology-rich learning and practice facility for members of The Landings Golf & Athletic Club. Golf Performance Center and Coaching Director Joe Plecker and his team offer their students data-driven analysis with the latest Swing Catalyst technology, which employs 3-D Motion Plates measuring ground reaction forces and multiple cameras to record the smallest swing details.

“Using launch monitors, force plates, and video helps us measure exactly, not guess, what the student is doing with their swing motion,” says Carol Preisinger, The Landing Club’s Lead Teaching Professional. “This accelerates the learning process because they can immediately see and quickly understand where improvements can be made.”

But it’s not only about technology. Personalized one-on-one instruction is available for beginners, and clinics are regularly scheduled for players who want to improve specific aspects of their games. Among the

most popular are the short-game Wedge Class and the AimPoint Express Green Reading Class, where students can learn the intricacies of slope and speed for better scoring on the putting surfaces.

Making the game accessible to the youngest golfers is a priority for the club’s instructors. Bogey’s Youth Golf introduces kids ages four and up to the game with an emphasis on fun, while the Birdies & Better program for ages 7-13 is designed to enhance those new skills. Players can then move up to the on-course coaching program that prepares them for school-team tryouts and event competition.

“The Golf Performance Center is an invaluable asset for all golfers. For novice players, it’s perfect to gain accelerated skills,” Plecker says. “For intermediate and advanced players, it can address relevant game issues and provide club-fitting services.”

The Landings Club is home to six of the South’s finest private golf courses in a coastal Georgia setting that’s just 20 minutes from historic downtown Savannah.

CITRUS HILLS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

The Villages of Citrus Hills - Hernando, Florida

Located just 10 minutes from western Florida’s Nature Coast, Citrus Hills Golf & Country Club features year-round play on three 18-hole courses—Meadows, Oaks, and Skyview—plus the nine-hole Brentwood layout.

The Citrus Hills golf staff offers individual instructional programs and small-group clinics, but players aren’t left to fend for themselves afterward. Many join the “Newbie Niners” league hosted by PGA pro Todd Bleidner on the Meadows course every Thursday afternoon from October through April. It’s a no-pressure outing where new golfers can get practical playing tips and develop their on-course skills.

“Todd does a great job with the ‘Newbies’ league,” says Citrus Hills Director of Golf Wayne Larsen. “The emphasis is on having fun and making new friends who are also just learning the game.”

Practice facilities at Citrus Hills include a double-sided driving range, a 20,000-square-foot putting

green, and a short game/bunker practice area. “We also have two Full Swing Simulators,” Larsen says, “that allows new players to work on their skills without people watching them on the range or pressuring them to speed it up on the course.”

The BellaVita Spa & Fitness Center at Citrus Hills is also part of the plan for new players, with golf-specific classes that feature personalized warm-up routines and muscle-strengthening programs.

For the youngest resident players and visiting grandkids ages 5-13, the Citrus Hills Junior Golf Program is a series of four three-day introductory and skills-development camps on weekday mornings during June and July. In addition, the Scholastic Primer Camp for aspiring school-team players ages 13-18 is offered in August.

“Growing the game of golf with new players of all ages is a top priority for us at Citrus Hills,” Larsen says.

The Benefits of Renting in Retirement:

A NEW PERSPECTIVE

Retirement often heralds a new chapter in life, one characterized by freedom, exploration, and leisure. Traditionally, many retirees opt for homeownership as a symbol of stability and security. However, a paradigm shift is underway, challenging the notion that buying a home is the only viable option for retirees who want to relocate. With changing lifestyles and evolving preferences, renting a home or apartment in retirement is gaining traction, offering a myriad of advantages that cater to the dynamic needs of today’s retirees.

A Vision of Flexibility and Choice

Bob Turner, Vice President and Director of Resident Properties for Allen and Rocks, challenges the conventional wisdom surrounding retirement housing. His insights illuminate the shifting landscape of retirement living, where renting emerges as a beacon of freedom, flexibility, and financial prudence. With a streamlined leasing process and lease terms ranging from one to five years, renting offers retirees the ultimate flexibility—a chance to try before they buy, explore different neighborhoods, and revel in a carefree living experience.

Whether it’s a desire to be closer to family or a longing to explore new horizons, renting gives retirees the nimbleness to embrace the possibilities.

Financial Prudence and Peace of Mind

“In today’s world, a lot of people think they have won the game when they purchase their homes with cash, but really, they’ve lost the value of their investment,” says Bob Turner of Allen and Rocks.

Beyond the allure of flexibility, renting in retirement presents a compelling case for financial prudence. Bob Turner underscores the economic advantages of leasing over buying, emphasizing the potential for significant cost savings and enhanced investment opportunities. By leasing a home instead of purchasing one outright, retirees can leverage the equity from the sale of their existing property to generate additional income or bolster their retirement savings. “In today’s world, a lot of people think they have won the game when they purchase their homes with cash, but really, they’ve lost the value of their investment,” says Bob.

For Bob Turner, the allure of renting lies in its ability to adapt to life’s ever-changing rhythms. Retirement, he contends, is not a static chapter but a dynamic journey marked by transitions and new beginnings.

Moreover, renting alleviates the financial uncertainties and responsibilities associated with homeownership from fluctuating property values to unexpected maintenance costs. Renting offers a carefree living experience, with professional property management services handling day-to-day maintenance and repairs—an invaluable peace of mind for retirees seeking simplicity and ease.

Food and Mood

More than 2,000 years ago, Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut.” Although this is a simplification, many aspects of our health are influenced by the microbes that live in our digestive system. Our gut, or digestive tract, begins in the mouth and extends to the anus. Although we usually associate our gut with breaking down food into the nutrients and energy our body needs to grow and function, research has shown that the food we eat affects our mental health. One way our gut does this is by producing a hormone called serotonin, which regulates mood (as well as appetite and sleep). Serotonin nicknamed the “feel-good

hormone,” lowers stress, increases happiness, boosts feelings of well-being, inhibits pain, and improves sleeping patterns. Our brain stem produces serotonin in the dorsal raphe area, but it’s predominantly found and produced by specialized cells in our digestive tract. The big effect of our digestive system on our mood because of serotonin production is one of the reasons that our gut is often referred to as our “second brain.”

What should we feed these beneficial bacteria that live in our “second brain” to help boost production of this feel-good hormone serotonin? It turns out that an amino acid called tryptophan is key in order for our brain and gut to make serotonin.

Foods that increase tryptophan

Meat: chicken breast, chicken leg, lean turkey breast, pork chops (with fat), beef, tofu

Beans and Lentils: edamame, navy beans, kidney beans, great northern beans, baked beans

Seafood: shrimp, salmon, cod, mahi-mahi, canned tuna, snapper, tilapia

Fruits (eat raw): avocado, pineapples, bananas, prunes, watermelon, apples

Nuts: nuts (cashews, pistachios, almonds), oats

Dairy: eggs, cheese, milk

Grains (cooked): wild rice, egg noodles, quinoa, whole wheat pasta

Two other non-food sources to help produce serotonin: Exercise. When we work out, our body produces more tryptophan which can then be converted to serotonin (hence, the “runner’s high”). Sunlight. Although too much exposure to sunlight can be damaging (skin cancer, aging of the skin), sunlight entering our eyes cues our brain to make serotonin. Lack of sunlight, such as during the long winter months when we are inside much more often, can trigger feelings of sadness due to the lack of sunlight to stimulate the production of serotonin. It’s why light boxes are sometimes used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or depression.

However, be aware that some foods decrease our serotonin levels:

adds hydrogen to vegetable oil, resulting in a solid fat. This results in a longer shelf-life for food, but it’s not good for our personal “shelf-life.” Examples of foods high in trans-fat: microwave popcorn, frozen pizza, cakes, pies, and cookies.

High-sugar foods: Think sodas, cookies, candy bars…stuff we typically call “junk food.”

Excess alcohol: Although small/moderate amounts of alcohol can increase serotonin levels (why we tend to laugh more and relax when we’re drink-

ing), excessive alcohol consumption can lead to just the opposite – lower serotonin levels.

Maybe we should change the saying of “you are what you eat” to “you feel what you eat.” If you want to have more energy, experience more joy, lower your stress levels, sleep better, and have increased pain tolerance, then consider what you’re feeding your trillions of gut bacteria that manufacture serotonin…and try stepping up your exercise routine and be sure you have a little sunshine in your life.

Chances are, you’ll make yourself happier. Food definitely can affect mood.
