Jorge has a busy life in Ave Maria. He’s the club champion at Panther Run, which is the golf course in his neighborhood. And when he isn’t playing over there, he’s teeing it up at The National, a golf cart commute from his home. “It’s wonderful for an avid golfer to have two championship courses a half mile from each other,” he says. Jorge is also a cancer survivor. “It made me think about life, think about what I was doing. There’s that old saying: a bad day on the golf course beats a good day at work.
Thankfully, I beat the cancer. And every day’s a great day at Ave Maria.” The life you’ve been thinking about could be just down the road in Ave Maria, A Big Kind of Small Town.

Your Next Chapter Starts Here
by Kelly Godbey Editor-in-Chief Certified Life Coach kellyg@ideal-living.com
If you are considering relocating to a new state or country when you retire or maybe even before that, Ideal-LIVING magazine is the perfect place for you. As editor of Ideal-LIVING, I’ve spent 30 years helping people find their ideal destination, life, and home. This unique perspective has been a gift. When I began in this business, I didn’t really understand what it meant to work for years and long for retirement, a time where you can do what you choose with your time. However, 30 years later, I couldn’t understand better. Each of us needs to make the most of every single day. So, if you are longing for additional time in your life, it is vitally important to discover the life you want to live and where you want to live it.
Buying a new home has evolved into more than just finding a house; it’s about discovering a community and lifestyle that reflects your next chapter. One of the greatest advantages today is the vast options available for ideal living, whether in coastal communities, vibrant urban settings, or serene mountain retreats. Each destination offers something unique, and visiting these places firsthand is a critical part of finding what truly feels like home. Our team encourages readers to take their time, explore, and immerse themselves in communities—meeting neighbors, sampling local cuisine, and taking in the sights—because finding the right fit is an experience that can’t be done from a distance.
To take it a step further, I’ll be speaking at our upcoming Ideal-LIVING Real Estate Shows in January and February 2025 (page 62). These shows are an excellent way to gain firsthand knowledge and insights, connect with experts, and narrow down the choices in real time. I look forward to meeting many of you there, discussing your dreams, and helping you move closer to making them a reality.
Let’s make this journey together toward finding your ideal destination, life, and home.
Find Your Ideal... DESTINATION
Many people start their relocation journey by choosing a destination they already know, such as a favorite vacation spot. Others take a broader approach, focusing on factors like tax benefits or climate. A proven strategy is to first select a state, then narrow your search to a specific region, followed by a city, and finally, find the right community that aligns with your lifestyle and preferences.
Ideal-LIVING welcomes the following communities. Please take the time to visit their websites, and don’t forget to tell them you saw them in Ideal-LIVING.
Kingbird
Rocky Point, NC
A groundbreaking new residential community is emerging from the pristine maritime forests of Coastal North Carolina. Kingbird is a first-of-its-kind gated development that’s offering a unique lifestyle opportunity combining rural serenity with proximity to the region’s best services and attractions.
Kingbird features home sites that can range in size from a minimum of 10 acres to expansive properties of more than 100 acres. Whether the owner’s dream is a secluded family estate, a wildlife-filled nature sanctuary, or an unrivaled corporate retreat, Kingbird is envisioned as a canvas on which to create a personal work of art amid the local forests, pastures, lakes, and creeks. In addition to custom-designed centerpiece residences, some may choose to plant vineyards and gardens, while others may build private horse stables.
The heart of community life at Kingbird will be a proposed amenity center with an enclosed event pavilion overlooking a large pond with a walking and jogging track around it. The center will be a hub of camaraderie for Kingbird neighbors who want to socialize with community activities or meet up for a golf outing at one of the many top-flight courses in the area.
Located near the town of Rocky Point, Kingbird is just 20 minutes from cultural venues, fine-dining restaurants, and top-rated medical centers in the port city of Wilmington. The city’s expanding airport with daily non-stop flights, as well as Wrightsville Beach and other North Carolina oceanfront destinations, are only a little further down the road.
Anderson Farms
Aiken, SC
Located near the delightful South Carolina town of Aiken, Anderson Farms is a unique residential community that offers large countryside homesteads and a sustainable nature-oriented lifestyle.
The woodland-and-meadows homesites at Anderson Farms range from two to 10 acres in size and are offered in a variety of Homestead plans that can include customizable primary residences. Most even have room for personal stables because horses are valued residents at Anderson Farms, which also features community equestrian facilities and services, plus riding trails through the 110-acre Hollow Creek Nature Preserve.
The barn-themed Community Center is the heart of Anderson Farms social events and activities, with extras that include a seasonal community produce garden, an orchard with peach, pear, plum, and pecan groves, a chicken coop for fresh organic eggs, fishing and kayaking on Anderson Pond, and butterfly and bluebird sanctuaries.
Anderson Farms is part of the Woodside Communities family, giving residents access to amenities ranging from 21+ miles of scenic walking trails and a complete fitness center to the restaurants, heath care providers and spa/salon services in The Village at Woodside. Anderson Farms property owners can also choose optional memberships at The Reserve Club at Woodside, which offers play on two of the region’s finest private golf courses, plus racquet-sports courts, a resort-style pool, and multiple clubhouse dining options. COMMUNITY LIVING
Thriving on Lake Thurmond
From customizing their forever home to exploring a wealth of activities, this couple found the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure in Savannah Lakes Village.
For Kathy and Charlie Gall, the decision to move to Savannah Lakes Village was more than just a change of scenery—it was a leap into a vibrant and active lifestyle tailored to their dreams. Originally considering lakes in Tennessee, the couple ultimately found their ideal community nestled in the scenic beauty of South Carolina’s freshwater coast.
“We decided in November to make the move,” Kathy shared. Having recently retired, she was eager to embrace a slower pace of life but still craved opportunities to stay engaged. “Charlie works remotely, so we realized we could live anywhere. Savannah Lakes Village offered everything we were looking for.”
The couple quickly sold their Cincinnati home amid a booming market and began renting in the village while building their custom home. According to Charlie, renting has been a huge advantage. “Being here during construction has allowed us to keep an eye on the process, make decisions as needed, and ensure we get exactly what we want in our home.”
visits. “This lake is unlike others—it feels private and uncrowded, even in peak seasons.”
Yet, it’s not just the lake that stands out. Kathy has immersed herself in Savannah Lakes Village’s social offerings, from water aerobics and a women’s golf group to watercolor classes and Bunco nights. “I’ve discovered so many hobbies I never had time for during my career,” she said. “The activities and friendships I’ve built here have made this transition seamless.”
“We’re glad we did this while we’re younger, giving ourselves plenty of years to enjoy everything. Savannah Lakes Village isn’t just where we live—it’s where we thrive.”
Kathy and Charlie were drawn to the community’s unique balance of natural beauty and robust amenities. “We love the water,” Charlie said, noting their kayaking, pontoon boating, and even tubing adventures with their adult children during
For the Galls, building their dream home was an opportunity to plan for the long term. “We’ve never built a house before,” Kathy explained, excited about designing spaces that reflect their lifestyle. Charlie added, “We made sure it’s functional for now and in the future, with plenty of room for family visits.”
Though leaving Cincinnati and their three children scattered across different cities was bittersweet, they’ve embraced the philosophy, “If you build it, they will come.” And come they do, enjoying the endless activities and stunning setting with their parents.
Reflecting on the move, Charlie summed it up perfectly: “We’re glad we did this while we’re younger, giving ourselves plenty of years to enjoy everything. Savannah Lakes Village isn’t just where we live—it’s where we thrive.”

DISCOVERY TRAVEL 2025
It’s time to chart your course to a new life
Relocating for retirement is an exciting opportunity to redefine your lifestyle, but finding the perfect destination requires more than online research or glowing brochures. A great place to start is at the Ideal-LIVING Real Estate Shows this winter. But, after that, it’s time to venture out on your own and explore the life that you want. In each issue, we’ll highlight areas for you to add to your travel wish list.
Discovery travel—visiting potential areas firsthand—offers invaluable insights into a location’s livability, charm, and suitability for your next chapter. Here are tips to make the most of your exploratory trips and find a place that truly feels like home.
1.
Do Your Homework
Before hitting the road, narrow down your options by researching key factors like cost of living, taxes, healthcare availability, and climate. Ideal-LIVING’s online resources and guides can help you identify regions that match your preferences. Create a shortlist of towns or communities to visit and plan your trip around what suits your needs.
2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Immerse Yourself in the Local Scene
Exploration means more than sightseeing—it’s about experiencing the area as a potential resident. Spend time in local neighborhoods, visit coffee shops, dine at family-owned restaurants, and attend community events if possible. These activities provide a sense of the area’s culture and vibe, as well as how welcoming it feels.
Connect with Residents
Talk to locals to gain real-world insights about the area. Residents can share valuable information about the community, like favorite activities, hidden gems, and challenges. Strike up conversations in social hubs or reach out to real estate professionals for introductions to current homeowners.
Tour Communities with Purpose
For those considering lifestyle communities, arrange tours with a focus on amenities, activities, and housing options. Pack comfortable clothes and even a bathing suit—after all, you’ll want to experience the pool or clubhouse firsthand. Ask about resident-led clubs and activities to see if they align with your hobbies and interests.
Stay Overnight (or Longer)
If possible, stay in the area for a few days. Many master-planned communities offer “Stay and Play” packages, giving you the chance to experience daily life as a resident. Rent a home or condo, shop at local markets, and explore like a local to ensure the area suits your lifestyle.
Prioritize
Outdoor Exploration
For nature enthusiasts, discovering a location’s outdoor offerings is key. Stroll through parks, hike local trails, or spend a day on the water if the area features lakes, rivers, or beaches. A community with easy access to nature can enrich your retirement in unexpected ways.
TUCAN COUNTRY CLUB & RESORT — PANAMA —
Nestled in the heart of Cocoli, near the iconic Panama Canal Tucán Residential Development is a testament to luxury living harmonized with nature’s tranquility.
SAVANNAH QUARTERS — GEORGIA —
Just minutes from historic Savannah, close to the beaches of Tybee Island and Hilton Head, it’s where beautiful homes and outstanding amenities combine with a vibrant club experience to create a unique lifestyle.
FAIRFIELD GLADE — TENNESSEE
Fairfield Glade is perched high atop the Cumberland Plateau and offers serene mountain beauty as it sits on the highest point between the Rocky and Smoky Mountains.
7.
Pay Attention to your Gut
As you visit each location, pay attention to how you feel. Does it feel “right”? You might get that feeling of coming home in the first visit or the tenth. You will just know when you find the right place.
8.
Plan a Follow-Up Visit
Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, plan a second trip to your top contenders. This visit should be more focused—exploring housing options, meeting with builders or real estate agents, and getting a deeper feel for the community dynamics.
Recommendations for Discovery Destinations:
Southeastern U.S.: From coastal gems like Hilton Head to mountain retreats in Asheville, this region offers diverse options with mild winters. And, don’t forget about Georgia and Florida.
Southern Retreats: You’ll find hidden gems in Missisissippi and Arkansas. Nature abounds around every corner.
Southwest Hotspots: Explore communities near Scottsdale or Austin for year-round sun and vibrant cultural scenes.
International Adventures: Consider regions like Mexico’s Riviera Maya or Portugal’s Algarve, where affordability meets stunning scenery and rich cultural experiences. Or maybe head to Belize, Panama, or Greece.
Discovery travel is an adventure in itself. By blending research, exploration, and local connections, you can find a destination that aligns with your retirement dreams and sets the stage for the lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Start planning your trips today—your ideal future awaits!

AIKEN,SC SOUTHERN
CHARM, EQUESTRIAN ELEGANCE, AND TIMELESS CONNECTIONS
Aiken is the epitome of Southern charm.
Southern Living even named it the South’s “Best Small Town.” Aiken is the kind of place that makes time slow down. It’s the kind of place where you greet a stranger and end up making a friend. You stick around here, and soon enough, you get to know everyone. But, it’s also easy to spend some time to yourself or with loved ones. Aiken has an extensive system of trails, plenty of golfing opportunities, and a long history with equestrian lifestyles. This is a place to connect, with yourself, with nature, and with the people around you that make life worth living.
Things To Do in Aiken
Take a Walk
Believe it or not, one of the best things to do in Aiken is to just take a hike. Aiken has some incredible spaces for you to move around and appreciate the beauty in the land. Hitchcock Woods is one of the largest urban forests in the nation and is home to over 65 miles in its trail system that provide opportunities for walking, running, and riding horses. Plus, this forest hosts the Aiken Horse Show in the spring. The Carolina Bay Nature Preserve is a serene and beautiful location with short trails that are perfect for spotting local wildlife. For the birdwatchers, look out for the Mississippi kites and red-tailed hawks. The Hopeland Gardens is also a great option for those looking to see a good variety of plantlife, as well as statues and water features on their stroll.
Horse Around
Aiken is well known as a hotspot for those wishing to experience a lifestyle full of equestrian pursuits. Many stables are available for those with their own horses, but if you are looking to see what it’s like to live amongst the majestic horses, Aiken is the place to do that. Horseriding can improve mental and physical health of riders as it allows you to burn calories, connect with nature, and lower stress levels, so it is a great activity to take up in retirement. If you’re looking for some guidance to get started, The Trail Riding Company and Rebel Ranch Horse Tours are local to the area and can help you get acquainted with the activity. If you want to meet the horses, Aiken Equine Rescue offers regular tours and will help you if you’re looking to adopt. And lastly, if you want to watch some horse sporting, polo matches are held on Sundays.
Carolina Culture
Another way to get to know Aiken is through familiarizing yourself with the city’s historical and cultural sites. A great way to get a feel for the city is by taking a tour. The famed ghost tours give a sense of the area’s haunts and legends, and the trolley tours take you around and cover historic homes and churches, Civil War sites, and all the famous equestrian spots. For the patrons of the arts, Aiken has two performing arts theaters and the Aiken Center for the Arts, a space that operates as an arts education space, a gallery, and a retail location for local art. And history buffs will delight in visiting the Aiken County Historical Museum, the SRS Heritage Museum, and the Center for African American History, Arts, and Culture.

KNOXVILLE
WHERE SCENIC SERENITY MEETS URBAN EXCITEMENT
If you crave a place where you can see time pass by the changing of leaves, a place that allows you to both experience the beauty of the area while also having access to a thriving city, Knoxville really can’t be beat. Less than a three-hour drive to all the glitz, glamour, and country spirit of Nashville, Knoxville may be the more peaceful destination, but that doesn’t mean that it’s boring. There is always something to do. From incredible festivals to athletic events to worldclass food, Knoxville makes fun for residents and tourists into a priority. Downtown is inviting with its shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues that are always ready for a good night out. And the surrounding area, defined by the mountains and access to the Tennessee River, is nothing short of breathtaking. Knoxville is the kind of place where you can experience it all.
Things To Do in Knoxville
The Maker City
You may or may not know this, but Knoxville has earned the nickname “the Maker City.” Why, you may ask, because this is a city of skilled crafters, creators, and entrepreneurs. Etsy even selected it in 2016 as one of the hosts of their Makers City Summits. The city developed a self-guided tour that will take you around the city to see 12 local spots where Knoxville’s spirit of creativity is on display. It’s a perfect excuse to buy gifts for loved ones or a treat for yourself at locations like Pretentious Glass Co., Riot Printing, and Blue Slip Winery. And the city hosts events like specialty markets and workshops all the time, so keep your eyes peeled.
History Your Way
Knoxville is a city with a rich and vibrant history. And there are many ways to dive in. One such way is by using the resources of the Knoxville History Project, which allows you to learn about the area through books, audio, video, and maps. There are even some self-guided walking tours through downtown like the Cradle of Country Music Walking Tour if you want to learn at your own pace. But, the best recommendation to get a feel for the city based on your interests is by going on a guided tour with the Knoxville Walking Tours. These walks, available almost every day, will take you on a journey with expert guides who know the area like the back of their hands. In addition to their three ghost tours, they also have tours that will take you through Knoxville’s Civil War past, Black history, musical and literary heritage, and women’s movements.
Adventure Time
The natural beauty of Tennessee gives people the option to pursue all manners of outdoor escapes. Knoxville in particular makes it easy to explore with their Urban Wilderness, 60 miles of trails and greenways that connect outdoor areas all over the city like parks, lakes, playgrounds, and a 600-acre wildlife area. If you want to take a dip in the water, Mead and Ijam Quarries are full of calm, sparkling waters. If you are a climber, Ijams Crag offers routes that cater to beginners and experts. Ijams River Landing is perfect for fishing, kayaking, and paddling. And bikers and hikers can hop on trails that match their skill levels. Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness allows people young and young at heart to enjoy nature and embrace physical activity without having to leave the city.

Potchke

OCALA
FLORIDA’S HIDDEN GEM FOR NATURE, CULTURE, AND EQUESTRIAN CHARM
Of course we all know Florida as the state for those young at heart. We talk about the roller coasters of Orlando, the music of Miami, and the beaches of the Keys, but very seldom do we give the light to Florida’s lesser-known gems. Ocala is a destination that isn’t on everyone’s radar but definitely should be. The small-town feel is what really makes this town so special and gives it a completely distinct feel that’s so different from how we picture Florida. So what should entice you about Ocala? The town has a calendar of events that bring something new and exciting for every season. It has a thriving downtown with shops and restaurants that will keep you coming back for more. The town’s art scene really provides it with color. Plus, the natural beauty here is truly something to behold. While Florida is best known for its beaches, Ocala’s springs shouldn’t be underestimated and present numerous possibilities for leisure and adventure. But, Ocala’s biggest claim to fame is its title as the Horse Capital of the World, a title it surely deserves. Ocala is sure to delight anyone who visits and the ones that call it home are lucky indeed.
Things To Do in Ocala, FL
Splash Around
One of the best things to do in Ocala is to appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Natural springs are a defining feature of the area. At Silver Springs State Park, you can take a glass bottom boat tour, take a swim, or spend the afternoon tubing. And for those who need even more adventure, Ocala also offers the highest, fastest, and longest zipline over water in the state.
Culture Galore
Ocala is also buzzing with activity in the arts space. The Appleton Museum of Art is a destination for international pieces, their extensive art deco collection, and equestrian paintings. And local theatrical performances aren’t to be missed. If you’re looking for some art to take home, local galleries abound, and the city hosts the popular monthly Art Walks from September through May every year. Art is even on the streets in a myriad of murals and Ocala’s own pride and joy, their exquisitely painted horse statues.
Horsing Around Speaking of Horses, as mentioned previously, Ocala is the Horse Capital of the world. This honor has been bestowed upon the area due to the number of prize winners that have been raised in the area, in addition to the sheer number of horses that inhabit the city. For those who want to see the farms where the horses are raised, Grandview Clydesdale Tours and Gypsy Gold Farm are great options.
Where to Eat
Ivy on the Square
Inspired by the 1920s, Ivy on the Square boasts a jazzy atmosphere and delicious Southern fare. Start off with the bacon-wrapped dates and choose either the salmon or the barbeque shrimp and grits for your main. And you have to save room for their excellent creme brulee.
Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille
This Florida favorite now has five locations around the state, which is easy to understand once you try their food. The menu has plenty of traditional NoLa dishes like gumbo and jambalaya and plenty of cajun-spiced meat and seafood dishes. Plus everyone loves the she crab soup!
Big Lee’s
A community staple, Big Lee’s built a place in the hearts of the people not through a fancy facade but through its meats. Pitmaster Rashad Jones makes flavorful barbeque seven days a week, and the brisket mac and cheese is worth the trip alone. The food even has Guy Fieri’s stamp of approval.
Amrit Palace
If you are craving some authentic Indian Food and excellent service, you’ve come to the right place. Help yourself to the lamb curry or chicken tikka masala. The portion sizes are so generous here that you’ll have plenty of leftovers.

Explore the Best Places to Retire, Vacation, or Relocate
What are you waiting for?
Tired of high taxes, high cost of living, and congestion? Are you tired of shoveling snow?
At some point during our lives, most of us realize that we can live the life we want precisely where we want to live. While this moment often comes in or near retirement, an increasing number of people are coming to this realization much sooner. They are searching for a better quality of life, lower taxes and cost of living, milder weather, and a healthy and safe environment.
Is this your moment? Are you ready to find your ideal life?
This winter, the perfect place to find your ideal life is at an ideal-LIVING Real Estate Show. The ideal-LIVING Show features the largest display of some of the best places to live from places like the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee,
Virginia, Delaware, Greece, Portugal, Mexico, or more in one place. The Show is a fun, convenient way to start exploring the top master-planned communities that offer some of the most sought-after amenities, such as walking trails, golf, pickleball and tennis, social clubs, marinas, fitness centers, pools, and fine dining.
Whether you’re looking to relocate to a more desirable destination, retired and ready to live your ideal life, or are searching for the perfect vacation home, the Show will help guide you through the discovery process. With community representatives and homebuilders available to answer all of your questions and expert-led seminars designed to help you cover all of your bases, you’ll leave the Show with the confidence you need to choose your ideal destination.
Since 1989, ideal-LIVING has helped hundreds of thousands of people relocate to their ideal destination, life, and home. Debbie Lane, who relocated to Brunswick Forest outside of Wilmington, NC, with her husband, John, had lived in Herndon, VA, for 22 years, where John commuted to downtown Washington, D.C., every day. Tired of the traffic, they
Home
wanted something different for retirement. “After all those years of working, this is what life is all about. We feel like we are on vacation all the time,” says Debbie.
“We attended two trade shows [ideal-LIVING Real Estate Shows] held in Tysons Corner, VA, and met with representatives from Georgia to Tennessee. We also talked to the various builders that were there, and it really got us thinking about retirement. The information was very helpful. Ideal-LIVING gave us the opportunity to narrow our choices.”
Louis and Valerie Zarro were the third generation to live in their three-story home near Mahwah, NJ, but they knew that it was time to break tradition. Both were anxious to escape cold winters and to find a community where they could feel connected.
“If we didn’t go to the ideal-LIVING Show, we might still be in New Jersey!” said Valerie. “When we went to the Show, we didn’t know where we wanted to go, so we took brochures from every property.”
The Zarros then searched by state and made a list of what they were looking for. They used the “Show Only” getaway offers they received at the Show that became the answer for them. The Zarros traveled to nearly a dozen communities and finally found their home and community in Millsboro, DE. “We didn’t know what we were missing,” said Zarro. “And the icing on the cake was the taxes!”
When you attend the ideal-LIVING Real Estate Show, you, too, can take advantage of “Show Only” getaways. Visiting the town or city you are considering relocating to is great, but the only way to truly know that a community or town is where you want to be

On these tours, you are intentionally folded into the community. You may be invited to play golf on the community course or take a yoga class with potential friends. A New City Emerges:
The Unfolding Story of Watersound, FL
In northwest Florida’s picturesque Walton and Bay Counties, a unique community (or should we say new city) is emerging, guided by the vision of The St. Joe Company. Watersound is a place where the traditional blend of coastal living and modern, amenity-rich lifestyles comes to life. St. Joe is in the process of transforming over 110,000 acres into a mosaic of residential neighborhoods, hospitality centers, and commercial hubs with one central mission: to create a self-sustaining community that caters to all stages of life.
This ambitious project, part of the Bay-Walton Sector Plan, is bringing to fruition a “cradle-tograve” model where residents of all ages and backgrounds can find a place to call home. From expansive conservation spaces to the luxury golf communities, Watersound is redefining what it means to live, work, and play on the white sand beaches and clear blue waters of Florida’s Emerald Coast.

As Northwest Florida is home to some great biodiversity, St. Joe’s commitment to conservation and sustainability became a hallmark of its development projects.
From Timberland to Community Builder
The story of The St. Joe Company dates back nearly a century, tracing its roots to the early 20th century when it was founded as a timber and paper company. This early phase allowed the company to amass significant land holdings across Florida, laying a foundation for future endeavors including the potential of its land assets for residential, recreational, and commercial development. In the 1990s when the company, led by visionary leaders, embraced a new mission: to create thoughtfully designed communities and amenities that would enrich both the lives of residents and the natural landscape. With their headquarters in neighboring Panama City Beach and most staff living in and around the community, they take great pride in developing in a responsibe way. As Northwest Florida is home to some great biodiversity, St. Joe’s commitment to conservation and sustainability became a hallmark of its development projects, setting it apart as a community builder that prioritizes both quality of life and ecological responsibility.

The Watersound Inspiration: WaterColor Inn and Its Legacy
One of the pioneering properties that helped shape the model of Watersound was the iconic WaterColor Inn. Opened in 2002, WaterColor Inn quickly became a premier destination for visitors seeking a luxurious yet unpretentious retreat along the Gulf Coast. The inn’s stunning beachfront location, combined with high-end yet laid-back amenities, attracted travelers who experienced the beauty and tranquility of Northwest Florida firsthand.
“The WaterColor Inn experience allowed visitors to see, feel, and fall in love with what northwest Florida had to offer,” explains Patrick Murphy, senior vice president of hospitality at The St. Joe Company. “Many guests would find themselves considering a home purchase as a way to capture the relaxed, refined living they discovered here.” This trend underscored the immense potential for development in Watersound, cementing WaterColor Inn’s role as an early and lasting influence in the area’s expansion.
“The WaterColor Inn experience allowed visitors to see, feel, and fall in love with what northwest Florida had to offer...”
Watersound Origins: The Foundation of a Vision
The journey of Watersound continued with the creation of Watersound Origins, among the largest master-planned communities in this ambitious development. Established to offer a relaxed lifestyle that harmonizes with the natural environment, Watersound Origins became a model for the quality and intentional design that would define the entire Watersound area. This residential community attracted homeowners with its trails, parks, and preserved natural beauty, setting a high standard for the communities that would follow.
Located along Lake Powell and near state-protected lands, Origins blends seamlessly with the environment. From its outdoor gathering spaces to its array of amenities such as golf, community pools, and fitness facilities, Watersound Origins introduced the signature resort-style living experience that has become synonymous with the Watersound name.
Thoughtfully Curating Partnerships for a Lasting Legacy
Watersound’s expansion and its high standards for quality of life would not be possible without strategic partnerships with industry leaders. St. Joe actively pursues partnerships with top-tier companies to meet the needs of the growing community. For example, Watersound partnered with Minto Communities to develop the popular Latitude Margaritaville Watersound, a premier active adult community. This partnership aligns with St. Joe’s goal of creating a cohesive, active, and engaging environments for retirees while leveraging Minto’s expertise in this market.
Mike Kerrigan, vice president of marketing and communications for St. Joe, explains the importance of choosing partners who not only bring expertise, but share the company’s long-term vision. “ We have a strategy of developing and building to fit needs in the marketplace. We look for best-inclass operators,” he states, adding, “Minto has a wonderful product, and it became clear that they’d be a great partner in that project.” This thoughtful selection of partners has also brought experts in hospitality, healthcare, and the arts to ensure that Watersound’s growth remains purposeful and aligned with community needs.
Watersound Watersound
Watersound encompasses over 110,000 acres (that’s actually larger than the city of Atlanta). With many hotels and inns, town centers, restaurants, shopping areas, and even an international airport, Watersound truly offers something for everyone. Crystal clear blue and turquoise waters provide the perfect backdrop for water sports. Outdoor recreation is available year-round in this picturesque Gulf Coast retreat. Clockwise: Watersound Origins was one of the original planned amenity communities within Watersound. Get away from it all in a marshfront retreat. See live entertainment at the Pavilion located in the town center. Stroll along the boardwalk, to the white sand beaches from The Watersound Beach Club.
Getting There

Alternatively, take a scenic road trip along the Gulf Coast on 30A, enjoying the coastal views and making stops at various attractions along the way.
Building for Every Stage of Life: A Collaboration with Leading Builders
Watersound’s thoughtful growth and diverse residential options are made possible through strategic partnerships with top homebuilders. These collaborations ensure that each community within Watersound maintains high quality, aesthetic appeal, and a cohesive experience aligned with the overall vision. Key builders involved in Watersound’s development include Minto, Toll Brothers, and Kolter Homes. Locally, two major contributing builders in the Watersound Origins include Huff Homes and Romair Construction.
Each of these builders brings expertise and unique design approaches, enhancing the variety of housing styles available within Watersound. From craftsman-style homes with sustainable designs to modern layouts that maximize space, these builders offer homes suited to different lifestyles and preferences. This commitment to diverse, high-quality construction is essential for a community that aims to appeal to multiple generations, from young families to retirees.
Diverse Living Options for Every Stage of Life
Watersound was designed with diversity in mind, offering options for various lifestyles and budgets. The development features residential communities like Watersound Camp Creek, with custom homes for families and independent senior living options at Watersound Fountains. Amenities for a Holistic Lifestyle
The Watersound Club offers exclusive benefits for residents and guests with its beach club, wellness center, golf courses designed by industry leaders, and courts for tennis and pickleball. The newly opened golf course known simply as “The Third,” designed by Davis Love III in partnership with Love Golf Design, adds to the allure, complementing the existing Tom Fazio and Greg Norman courses in the area. These amenities are carefully crafted to provide a seamless, resort-style experience for Watersound residents.
In addition to lifestyle amenities, the future healthcare campus, developed in partnership with Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare and Florida State University, will add a layer of support for all residents. This 87-acre facility, with its 100-bed inpatient capacity and state-of-the-art research components, is expected to become a health hub for the entire community, reflecting St. Joe’s commitment to holistic living.
Art and Nature: The Longleaf Art Park
One of Watersound’s most striking developments is the Longleaf Art Park, a 15.5-acre park that promises to be a cultural beacon in the region. Created by the Berkowitz Contemporary Foundation, in collaboration with OLI Architecture and renowned sculptor Richard Serra, the park embodies a serene blend of art and nature. Its signature feature, the Passage of Time Pavilion, offers visitors an immersive experience in a naturally integrated setting that minimizes disruption to the landscape. Managed by the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton
County, the park will host outdoor events, art programming, and meandering pathways for visitors to connect with both the natural and artistic worlds.
Jennifer Steele, executive director of the Cultural Arts Alliance, believes the Longleaf Art Park will open a new chapter in cultural access for the area. “ The importance of access to a piece of work as significant as Richard Serra’s ‘Passage of Time’ cannot be overstated,” she states, highlighting how this development will inspire local artists, residents, students, and visitors alike for generations.
A New Lifestyle Hub on the Emerald Coast
Watersound embodies the potential of northwest Florida’s transformation into a center of culture, community, and lifestyle. Its strategic location, paired with high-quality amenities and a commitment to conservation, promises an elevated lifestyle experience for residents and visitors alike. The thoughtfully curated neighborhoods, combined with a robust infrastructure that includes health, recreation, and cultural facilities, reflect St. Joe’s commitment to making Watersound a multi-generational community.
As it grows, Watersound will not only enhance the lives of its residents but will also set a benchmark for other developments in the region. For those drawn to the unparalleled beauty of northwest Florida and the appeal of a community built to adapt to its residents’ changing needs, Watersound is an invitation to be part of a new era—where art, nature, and community come together seamlessly. Dates & Times
Spring Training 2025 begins with an Arizona Cactus League matchup between the LA Dodgers and Chicago Cubs on Thursday, February 20th. Florida Grapefruit League games start with the New York Yankees hosting the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, February 21st. Up Close & Personal
Spring Training ballparks open their gates at least an hour before game time, allowing fans a chance to get a ground-level view of batting and fielding practice. Many players also take the opportunity to sign autographs and chat with their most loyal fans.
Spring Breakout
Following its popular premiere last season, Spring Training 2025 will again feature Spring Breakout games March 13th-16th, with each team’s top farm-system prospects making their bigleague debuts.
Ticket Prices

For Cactus League fans, Amtrak also offers service from Chicago to Arizona, but most travelers drive from the West Coast or fly into the PhoenixScottsdale airport, which is convenient to all of the local ballparks.

Places Where Everyone Knows Your Name
The going from work to home and nowhere in between routine is taxing, especially since, recently, many people’s homes also became their offices. This affects how we meet people, and that simple daily grind has negative impacts on our well-being. So what is the alternative?
Recently, there is a trend of talking about the local venues that make life worth living, spaces outside of work and home that act as venues for activity and socialization. Spots that you can frequent that bring a sense of belonging and purpose. Think about that famous line from Cheers, “Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name.”
For this issue, we decided to talk to some folks about the places that have given them a sense of joy and camaraderie since making a move. These are some gathering places that people can’t help but love.
The Coffee Group: Brewing Friendships and Routine
KEOWEE KEY, SALEM, SC
Getting out of bed in the morning can be a drag, but not for Phil Epstein of Keowee Key on Lake Keowee in Salem, SC. This is because his Thursday mornings are spent among a great group of friends. For over 20 years, a group of men, ages 62 to over 90, have been meeting at the tennis courts at 7:45 a.m. Says Phil, “We don’t care if we’re bad at tennis or not; we just enjoy the company.” After about an hour of play, they head to Keowee Key’s fitness center for coffee and muffins. While sipping their beverages, the men talk about everything from sports to their best travel stories to the stock market, but leave out the politics. Things have changed a bit over the years. Many of the group’s members have now added rounds of golf and Saturday breakfasts to their weekly routines, and they now have personalized mugs for their drinks. Phil adds, when the group started meeting, “Coffee used to be $0.25 at that time; Now it’s like a dollar.” But, what hasn’t changed throughout the years is how this weekly meeting helps people come together.
109th Hole: Where Sports and Social Bonds Meet
THE LANDINGS ON SKIDAWAY ISLAND MINUTES FROM SAVANNAH, GA
The ‘wow factor’ with this bar doesn’t come with its selection of brews, tasty bites, or the Scottish-pub-inspired decor, although this spot surely has all three. With bars, the joy is always about the people who show up, and according to Brent Midwood, the frequent patrons of the 109th hole at The Landings, a planned amenity community in Savannah, GA, are some of the best people around.
“I am guaranteed if I go [to the 109] on a Saturday afternoon or on a Sunday afternoon to watch college ball or the NFL, that I will know somebody.”
Brent, a Landings resident since 2016, loves what they’ve done with the place. “The 109,” as Brent calls it, started out as what he’d describe as a traditional country club restaurant. Since it’s reopening in fall of 2023, he appreciates that the Landings made the bar cozier, updated the menu, and leaned into a more casual sports bar feel by adding a bunch of new TVs. The remodel cemented his status as a regular. Says Brent, “I am guaranteed if I go in there on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to watch college ball or the NFL, that I will know somebody.” He enjoys being able to talk with people from around the country and have the community as something that binds them together, an experience he feels is unique to being part of a place like the Landings. “You’re sitting down watching a football game and the guy that’s sitting next to you is just watching the same football game and you start to have a conversation and next thing you know, like two weeks later, you going out to dinner with him and his wife and they’re in the golf group,” Brent remarks. He’s glad that he has a place like this to make the kind of friendships that have made all the difference in feeling at home here.
Cape Charles: A Town That Feels Like Family
BAY CREEK, CAPE CHARLES, VA
We’ve been talking about how restaurants, bars, and community centers can make exceptional places to congregate. But, Bay Creek residents are quick to point out that the entire town of Cape Charles, VA, operates as a gathering space. The benefit of living in this kind of small town is that you know everyone. You grab a seat at the bar and the bartender not only knows your order but asks about how your kids are doing.
“I feel like I’m living in a Hallmark movie. I have more friends here than I’ve ever had in my life.”
Nancy and Joe Murphy relocated to the thriving eastern shore community on the Chesapeake Bay from Dallas, TX, about a year ago. Growing up in California, Nancy missed nature and has found her haven with sunrises and sunsets along the water. She loves the fact that you see the same people everywhere. She says, “You see them in the grocery store, you see them at the post office, and it’s a real community. I feel like I’m living in a Hallmark movie. I have more friends here than I’ve ever had in my life.” They love to frequent The Distillery, Coastal Bakery, or the Shanty and always see people they know.
Nancy has even found a hidden talent that she shares with the people of Bay Creek. During the pandemic, she took up painting and now has started her own business called Yellow Dot Art. You might just see Nancy and her new yellow art cart when you stop in on Cape Charles.
Oil Well: More Than Just Beer, It’s a Community Hub AVE MARIA, FL
People tend to gravitate toward places that not only provide excellent goods and services, but go the extra mile for their patrons. That desire to exceed expectations is what makes Oil Well Craft Beer a fan favorite among those living in Ave Maria. Located in southwest Florida near Naples, Ave Maria is a picturesque small town planned community that caters to families and retirees alike.
“You don’t have to be a beer lover to enjoy the fun that makes Oil Well a popular meeting place for all Ave residents from golfers and families to singles and new folk,” said resident Jim Anderson. The popularity comes largely from the curated calendar of activities that make every night a new experience. Bingo and trivia are played on the regular, but they also have themed dances, dog nights, and holiday get togethers that are adored by attendees. And with a rotating menu of delightful drinks, their famous subs, and food trucks daily, it’s easy to see why people flock here. Ave Maria’s most welcomed third space remains for residents an active hub for community bonds, creating a sense of belonging beyond the home.
The Tiki Bar: A Tropical Escape That Brings People Together
CITRUS HILLS, FL
If you picture ending your day on the deck with a frozen drink in your hand and your feet tapping to the beats of local bands, you wouldn’t be alone. That is what folks love about the Tiki Bar at Citrus Hills in Florida. You may be physically off the water, but here, you feel like you’re located in a tropical oasis. Palm trees, torches, and a thatched roof help sell the vibe of this place, but it’s the people who show up every day that give you that sunny feeling. The Tiki Bar is always drawing residents in with live music, happy hours, monthly karaoke nights, and football Sundays.
Retiree Resident Rhonda Temple Evans spends her evenings alternating between hanging out in her backyard with her husband, teaching her sold out cooking class at Citrus Hills’ Garden Room, and enjoying their close proximity to the Tiki Bar. “It’s just fun and social,” Rhonda remarks. After they moved in just a few doors down, some neighbors invited them to head over one night, and the rest is history. She and her husband love the opportunity to meet new people, get on the dance floor, and enjoy the open air. “There’s no windows or anything. So it’s really, you know, just nice to feel like you’re outside and have that outdoor experience.”
Small-Town Gems That Bring Neighbors Together
LUMINESCENCE AT RIO VISTA, CA
Living in Luminescence at Rio Vista, CA, offers a blend of small-town charm and vibrant gathering spots. Pickleball is a beloved pastime, with residents meeting morning and evening for friendly games. These sessions foster camaraderie and provide a sense of community connection. For relaxing evenings or special outings, locals highly recommend Ben’s Friends of the Vine, a cozy wine bar perfect for enjoying a glass with neighbors, and The Bakery, where delicious pastries and warm coffee make for delightful mornings. While Rio Vista may lack big-city amenities, its intimate gathering spots and welcoming atmosphere create a truly close-knit community experience.
The stories shared here highlight the importance of finding spaces that foster connections and joy. Whether it’s a cozy coffee group, a lively tiki bar, or a welcoming small-town community, these gathering places add depth and meaning to everyday life. They remind us that moving to a new place isn’t just about choosing a home; it’s about finding a sense of belonging. As you consider your next step, prioritize those spots where you’ll feel part of something bigger—a network of friends, neighbors, and shared experiences that make every day worth celebrating.
TOP 10 TIPS TO FIND YOUR IDEAL HOME
Consider the Lifestyle You Want
Consider what’s most important to you: access to healthcare, recreational activities, proximity to family, or a peaceful environment. The most important thing in finding a new home is to envision how you want to spend your time.
Budget Wisely
Evaluate your financial situation, including retirement income, savings, and potential future expenses. Factor in property taxes, HOA fees, and maintenance costs when determining your housing budget.
Research Retirement-Friendly Areas
Explore areas known for their retirement amenities, tax benefits, and low cost of living. States with warm climates, active communities, or low taxes are often popular choices.
Visit Potential Locations
Spend time in potential areas to experience the community, climate, and amenities firsthand. Consider staying for an extended visit or renting before buying to ensure it feels like home.
Assess Accessibility
Look for homes that will accommodate your future needs, such as single-level living, wide doorways, or nearby public transportation. Think long-term when evaluating accessibility.
Seek Community
Research neighborhoods or planned communities that match your interests and values. Social opportunities like clubs, classes, and events can enhance your quality of life. Planned amenity communities provide an atmosphere for healthy living.
Consider Healthcare Proximity
Ensure that your new home is near high-quality medical facilities. Access to specialists, hospitals, and pharmacies becomes increasingly important as you age.
Think About Maintenance
Decide if you prefer a low-maintenance lifestyle, such as a condo or retirement community, or if you’re comfortable with the upkeep of a standalone house.
Compare Amenities
Look for amenities that enhance your lifestyle, such as golf courses, walking trails, fitness centers with pools and pickleball, or cultural activities and clubs galore.

Golf for Good
Playing a Round for Worthy Causes and Better Communities
by JG Walker
At country clubs, in golf communities, and on public courses across America, players gather every day (weather permitting) to enjoy some fresh air and healthy exercise on the links. Equally important are the social aspects of the sport, from the friendly competition and leisurely conversations on the fairways and greens to the good-natured “settling up” at a favorite 19th hole in the clubhouse.
But the game of golf puts its best foot forward when
playing a round supports a good cause. Nearly every golf course in the country hosts at least one annual tournament event, where local volunteers, staff members, small-business sponsors, and paying players donate their time and money to raise funds for local charities. And some golf clubs do much more, going above and beyond the call of duty and maybe even helping to save some lives along the way.
DATAW ISLAND
Beaufort, SC
Dataw Island is an upscale residential community located in the idyllic heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry, about 15 minutes from the historic town of Beaufort. It’s also home to the Dataw Island Club with year-round recreational amenities that include two of the region’s premier private golf courses. A recent survey found that 94% of club members are active in volunteer work that benefits a wide range of area charities. And twice a year the entire Dataw community comes together for a pair of signature golf fundraisers that have become local traditions of hope and honor.
Every spring since 2002, the Dataw Island Ladies Golf Association has coordinated “Community for a Cure,” a weeklong series of events to support the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation and its Harriet Keyserling Cancer Center. A golf tournament and putting contest are among the annual high-
lights that also include tennis and pickleball competitions. Along with a big silent auction, each year’s event has a featured fundraiser like a fashion show, themed dance party, or battle of the bands. In 2024, those combined activities raised nearly $32,000 for Keyserling Center equipment and patient services, bringing total donations over the past 22 years to more than $500,000.
Dataw Island Club member Celeste Nalwasky has been involved with Community for a Cure since becoming an island resident in 2007. She has served as the event’s chairperson, remains active as one of dozens of organizing volunteers, and brings a personal perspective to the cause.
“I’m a cancer survivor and I want everyone to have the advantages that I had, the resources and support that I had when I went through the trauma of battling cancer,” says Nalwasky. “We are all affected by cancer in some way, so we morphed from a ‘golf’ event to a ‘community’ event. The inclusiveness and community spirit bring the island together. We raise sig-

nificant money, but even more importantly, we raise hope.”
Eighteen years ago, the Dataw Island Men’s Golf Association sponsored the first Dataw Veterans Golf Tournament to support organizations like Wounded Warriors and Folds of Honor. In 2017, the association teamed with Tee It Up for the Troops, a national non-profit that raises money for a variety of service-related causes, and the Dataw event expanded to a full
“Veterans Week” of activities.
In addition to the centerpiece Veterans Golf Classic, with a field that includes 75 guest veteran players, there’s a Big Break-style tournament and a Golf Marathon where club staffers push the limits to play 250+ holes in a single day.
The week’s events also include a parade and flag ceremony, an auction, a barbeque cookout, the year’s biggest happy hour at the Dataw Island Pub, performances by the Dataw Singers and the Lowcountry Symphony Orchestra, an awards breakfast, and other activities.
Dataw Veterans Week in 2024 raised $82,000 for Tee It Up and local veteran’s organizations, pushing the total over the years to more than $715,000 for an annual event designed not only to raise money, but also to honor the service of veterans and their active-duty counterparts.
“These men and women sacrifice so much for this country, and they deserve our full support,” says director of golf Chris Fearn. “Whether that is donating to a good cause or just simply being there for a veteran and telling them ‘Thank you’ for their service and sacrifice.”
“Every year our members come together in support of veterans, and every year they outdo themselves,” says Dataw general manager Ted Bartlett. “The sacrifices made to present all these events and the fundraising efforts are simply phenomenal.”

THE CLUBS AT ST. JAMES Southport, NC
Located on the North Carolina coast near the seaside town of Southport, the St. James residential community features an unrivaled recreational centerpiece—The Clubs at St. James. Managed by industry leader Troon Golf, The Clubs offers 81 holes of on-site play with three 18-hole gems by acclaimed designers PB Dye, Nicklaus Design, and Tim Cate, plus the 27-hole Hale Irwin layout. It’s a year-round golfer’s paradise,
which club members and residents put to good use with six major annual fundraising events.
First up on the schedule every March is the St. Paddy’s Day Tournament for the North Carolina Dementia Alliance. This year’s event celebrated its 20th anniversary at St. James with a field of 180 players on the three nines at the Members Club, which has the facilities to serve as the headquarters for all of the community’s big golf fundraisers.
The newest charitable event at St. James was an April 27 benefit to support the vital work of the Wounded Warriors Project. The 380 golfers who participated teed it up on the Members, Founders, and Reserve courses, raising more than $130,000 on the links and at the post-round dinner for nearly 500 attendees.
On September 7, the 4th annual Captain Austin Murga Memorial Golf Tournament was held to support the Stop Soldier Suicide organization. Sponsors, volunteers, and 184 golfers combined efforts to raise $115,000 at the 2024 event. Just a few days later, on September 11, the St. James community rallied again for the Tunnels to Towers tournament that helps to fund mortgage-free homes and support services for the families of fallen first responders and Gold Star heroes.
“St. James has a very active veteran and military presence in the community and we want to be as supportive of these groups as the residents have been over the years,” says Kent Silhanek, general manager of The Clubs at St. James. “It truly is an honor to have a role in raising funds for the worthy causes our community supports,” Silhanek noted
that Troon and The Clubs had contributed the equivalent of $65,000 to support the six major fundraisers in 2024 and a total of more than $100,000 for local charities during the year.
The final annual event on the calendar, held on October 15, was a golf tournament and social events to support the Little Pink Houses of Hope, a group that funds initiatives like weeklong retreats for breast cancer survivors and their families. Now in its fifth year at St. James, the 2024 event included 150 players and raised $40,000.
“We’re proud of our residents at St. James and their dedication to so many special causes in the community. They are always ready to volunteer, to donate their time, and make contributions to different organizations,” says Jay Atkinson,
president of St. James Properties. “The Clubs at St. James’ members are especially service-oriented and golf tournaments are just one way that they give back to the community, both locally and regionally.”
And while the golf events certainly draw the biggest crowds, St. James residents also support more than two dozen additional local charities with their volunteer time and fundraising efforts. “I cannot imagine another community that is as giving as our St. James residents have been in the past and will surely continue to be in the years ahead,” Atkinson concludes.

ON TOP OF THE WORLD
Ocala, FL
The Candler Hills Golf Club at On Top of the World (OTOW) hosted the 19th Annual Ocala Open in March 2024 and it was a record-breaking success. The three-day championship drew professional golfers from country clubs throughout the Southeast to compete for the largest purse in Ocala Open history. But the real winners were named after the week’s kick-off event, a Pro-Am that raised $100,000 for two local non-profits.
Interfaith Emergency Services provides food, shelter, clothing, and free healthcare services to area residents in need. Hospice of Marion County, Inc., offers compassionate comfort care and counseling services to the terminally ill and their families. Each charity received $50,000 thanks to the contributions of sponsors, players, and volunteers. The 2024 event pushed the total raised by the Ocala Open over the years to more than $1 million.
“It’s truly remarkable to see the continuous support from our sponsors and the local community to reach this milestone,” said OTOW director of golf, Matt Hibbs. “Their generosity allows us to make a meaningful impact on organizations that provide invaluable assistance to our community and its residents.”
The 20th Annual Ocala Open returns to Candler Hills Golf Club from March 19-21, 2025, with the Charity Pro-Am scheduled for March 18. For more information about playing in the Pro-Am and VIP tournament access, go to OcalaOpen.com.
In addition to Candler Hills Golf Club, the OTOW Golf Club features two of the region’s finest private 18-hole layouts and a new, coming soon, ninehole pitch-and-putt course. Among OTOW’s 175 community clubs are a variety of charitable service organizations and other groups that sponsor fundraisers and local outreach events.

Cooking with Intention
Chef RJ Dye Blends Tradition and Innovation at Callawassie Island Club
by Fanny Slater
If serene Lowcountry living on a private oasis sounds like your cup of sweet tea, you’ve come to the right page. Cradled between Beaufort and Hilton Head, Callawassie Island is an elite, nature-rich estate where pristine landscapes meet Southern hospitality and country club charm. This lush South Carolina sanctuary is a fairytale storybook of winding tidal creeks, expansive marshlands, and ancient oak trees draped in Spanish moss.
At the heart of the community is the Callawassie Island Club—a social and recreational hub where members enjoy a world-class lifestyle branded by gorgeous golf courses, walking trails, and wildlife attractions. Beyond its premier amenities, the retreat center is celebrated for its warm, gracious spirit which makes everyone feel right at home. But since “home” looks different for everybody, one of the club’s real perks is a chef who delights in reconnecting members to their roots through what he puts on their plates.
Among the many things Executive Chef RJ Dye brings to the table, it’s the “why” behind his creations and the
personal relationships he fosters that set him apart. Familiarity and consistency are, of course, always on the menu, but he operates with intention, heart, and a genuine hunger for culinary evolution and culture. This curiosity surpasses a basic interest in food history. Dye has a continual drive to learn, appreciate, and engage with the broader stories. Most importantly when it comes to the club, he understands the importance of knowing where to push boundaries and when to stick to familiar favorites. (AKA Bún Bò Huế versus chicken Picatta).
You’d never guess his culinary journey began simply because a fry cook didn’t show up to work one day. Talk about right place, right time.
“Now that we’ve built up a little bit of trust, I can pull from my childhood and experiences and people are enjoying branching out and trying new things.“
Living Abroad...
Go back to your early days as the “country boy from Franklin County, NC.” What are some of your very first memories around food?
My earliest memories were in a garden—playing around in the dirt and asking my mom for a peeled cucumber and fresh peas off the vine.
My mom is a huge influence in my culinary journey. She was aggressively creative and industrious. Both of my parents were vegetarians, and we all bonded over that. I was introduced to so much food as a child and given quite a range of options.
What was your upbringing like around cooking and homemade meals?
I’m the second oldest of seven kids, and I would cook breakfast and lunch for my siblings. Not because I had to, but because I liked to. I was always excited to help my parents cook. I wanted to be part of the process.
Vegetarian food was pretty impressionable. I was eating plain, country food, but because my mom also loved international food and was vegetarian, we would have curries and chapati bread. I eat lo mein everywhere I go, but it just doesn’t quite hit like my mom’s.
When did your culinary path veer off the vegetarian course?
Eventually, my parents separated, and my mom married a classic Southern man from Tennessee. My step father was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he introduced fried chicken and steak into my diet. We were butchering our own deer and raising goats, chickens, and rabbits, and we always had a garden.
Even as a child, there was only one thing I refused to eat: potato salad. It was the one thing my mom didn’t make well, and the hard-boiled eggs didn’t do it for me.
Potato salad aside, how did your cooking career sprout from there?
I didn’t go to culinary school or get into cooking professionally until I was 30. I graduated with a history degree, and honestly, what excites me around food is the cultural implications and why we cook the way we do.
The first restaurant to hire me on was one of my favorites in Charleston, The Glass Onion. I would go in on my day off and eat enough food for three people. I told them I wanted to cook, but they hired me for a front of house position. One day, the fry cook didn’t show up, and that was my shot!
From there, I was able to parlay that job to Fig in Charleston. I was there for five years and ended as a sous chef. That was my culinary school; but it wasn’t just that they taught me how to cook, they taught me discipline. I also worked in the Cayman Islands for a bit at two Italian restaurants, then came back to this area as my wife is from Hilton Head.
With a kitchen smack dab in the Lowcountry, are most menu items expected to be heavy, classic Southern cuisine, or can you play around with novel creations?
I’ve been able to take advantage of people being excited to see new things, but when I first got to the club, I got lots of pushback on unfamiliar menu items. Now that we’ve built up a little bit of trust, I can pull from my childhood and experiences, and people are enjoying branching out and trying new things.
We had a guest chef last week who specialized in AfroCaribbean food. We had about 50 guests, and it was received really well.
Where Championship Golf Meets Natural Beauty
Meet South Carolina’s first private community that is recognized as a National Wildlife Habitat. Just 20 minutes from Hilton Head Island and one of hundreds of sea and barrier islands, Callawassie Island is an 880-acre private oasis comprised of coastline, marshes, and moss-draped oaks that hosts close to 700 families.
Known for offering an active lifestyle, this private golf community has an award-winning, 27-hole course designed by Tom Fazio as well as Fitness Center, swimming pools, multiple variety of racquet sport courts, a Clubhouse, River Club, and over 50 active clubs and organizations that foster and encourage warmth, balance, and connection.
There’s no better way to experience Callawassie Island than through a Discovery Visit. You’ll enjoy accommodations, access to amenities, a personalized real estate tour, and your chance to live on your own private island.
How do you equally cater to the assorted palates at a country club?
I’m everyone’s chef here, essentially a private chef for 600 people. It would be a daunting task for some chefs to try to please everyone, but I don’t see it like that. I see it as being able to have a personal relationship with the members and them knowing they can talk to me and ask for what they want.
I’m excited to come to work, and I think it’s because I’m able to play around. Of course, our a la carte lunch menu is very safe—chicken Picatta, scampi, and a vegetable alfredo I keep in my back pocket—and those simplistic options keep everyone happy.
We’ve got four Vietnamese grocery stores within an hour of us, and on a day off, I make the trip. That’s what’s fun for me. I can squeeze in a special here and there because there are plenty of members who are just as big of food nerds as me.
Do you get personal requests from the members?
There are so many people here from so many diverse backgrounds, and I enjoy talking to them about their food experiences and what they miss from their area. There’s a gentleman here from Wisconsin, and when we occasionally buy whole pig heads, he asks for a couple for himself.
On the other end of the pig head spectrum, let’s talk about veggies. Bringing out the beauty in vegetables seems to be your forté. Do you get to explore that at the club?
I would have a menu full of just vegetable side dishes if I could! It’s hard to cater to vegetarians because it’s a small group. When we put something on the menu for them, it’s really just for them and can be a hard sell for everyone else.
There’s a couple from California who are vegetarians, and we talk to them to find out when they’re coming in and what we can do for them.
What makes food memorable to you?
Having something over and over again. In the town I grew up in, there may not have been a five-star restaurant, but there
“I’m everyone’s chef here, I’m essentially a private chef for 600 people.“
was a little greasy spoon with a flattop, and they make a country ham grilled cheese sandwich that they’ve been doing the same way for years.
I don’t know at what point I started craving it, but after the seventh or eighth time, I had to have it. Because it was convenient and made with intention and effort, I started craving it. It’s the familiarity and the consistency, and that’s what I want to provide here at the club
Sourcing local ingredients is high on your values as a chef and as a person. When you take advantage of the bounty of the area, does it feel acknowledged in this setting?
The membership appreciates that we’re butchering our own fish and getting chickens from down the road. I’m proud of the food we serve. This area has such an incredible food culture, and a lot of the people from here have been here for multiple generations, so we’re able to lean on their food knowledge. There’s a gentleman here who grew up crabbing, and he popped up at an event where we were picking blue crabs and started picking three to our one!
Building a Post-Election Investment Strategy
by Lawrence S. Tundidor CFP®, AIF®, AAMS®, AWMA®
New policies will shape the economy, financial markets, and individual investments; understanding these impacts is crucial for making strategic investment decisions.
Now that the 2024 presidential election cycle is over, investors need to assess how new policies could shape the economy, financial markets, and their investments. The Trump administration’s past approach to the economy has focused on deregulation, tax cuts, a pro-business environment, and a strong stance on trade. These policies could influence different sectors in the market, and understanding these impacts is crucial for making strategic investment decisions. Ideal-Living spoke with financial planner Lawrence S. Tundidor, CFP®, AIF®, AAMS®, AWMA® of the Tundidor Wealth and Investment Group to help discuss potential strategies and which sectors might benefit from these policies.
Pro-Business Policies and Deregulation
Trump’s traditionally-favored pro-business policies, including tax cuts for corporations, deregulation, and a focus on stimulating economic growth through market-friendly measures. These policies are likely to continue in a second term, with a focus on reducing corporate tax rates, slashing red tape, and providing tax incentives for businesses. Lower taxes and reduced regulations could lead to higher corporate earnings, particularly for large, established companies. Growth and dividend-paying stocks in sectors such as financials, defense, energy, and technology could benefit from this, potentially leading to more corporate share buybacks, a common strategy to boost stock prices. Additionally, a less restrictive regulatory environment could lead to more cost savings for companies, as well as mergers and acquisition opportunities in these sectors.
Taxes: Lowering Corporate and Individual Tax Rates
During the first term, the incoming administration passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which lowered the corporate tax rate and offered temporary tax cuts for individuals, which is set to expire at the end of 2025. It’s now possible that we could see an extension of the existing law or further corporate tax cuts, additional tax breaks for businesses, and possibly another round of tax cuts for individuals. Tax-sensitive industries could benefit from lower tax rates, as these companies often face large tax liabilities. Companies with large international operations may also benefit from the tax repatriation of foreign earnings.
Trade Policy: Protecting Domestic Industries and Tariff Impacts
Trump has consistently advocated for protectionist trade policies, including imposing tariffs on countries like China and renegotiating trade deals such as NAFTA (now USMCA). If trade policies continue to focus on protecting domestic industries, certain sectors could benefit, while others could be hurt by tariff impositions or supply chain disruptions. U.S.-
based companies that are less reliant on international supply chains could benefit from protectionist policies, particularly in manufacturing, steel, and automobiles. Companies that rely heavily on global supply chains or imports (such as tech companies reliant on Chinese components) may face higher costs and potential price inflation. This could impact sectors like consumer electronics and automobile manufacturers.
Global Markets: A Stronger Dollar and Potential Risks in Trade Relations
Trump’s stance on trade, foreign relations, and currency manipulation often favored a strong U.S. dollar, as a means of reducing the trade deficit and encouraging domestic production. However, trade tensions with other countries (e.g., China, the EU) could lead to geopolitical risks, which might impact global markets. A stronger dollar can be beneficial for U.S. companies with operations abroad because it increases their overseas profits when converted back to dollars, but it may hurt exporters and multinationals. Tensions with global partners could create market volatility, particularly in emerging markets.
Understanding the potential impacts of these policies on different sectors and the overall economy, investors can better position themselves for success.
Conclusion
A second term for the incoming administration could bring a continuation of the pro-business, deregulatory, and protectionist policies that characterized the first term. By understanding the potential impacts of these policies on different sectors and the overall economy, investors can better position themselves for success. Keep in mind that while those policies may create opportunities in certain areas, they can also create risks in the global economic landscape, so maintaining a diversified portfolio and staying adaptable will be essential. If you’re unsure how to navigate the post-election landscape, consider reviewing your existing plan and goals with a CFP(R) professional who can provide personalized guidance that can help you develop a strategy that aligns with your risk tolerance, investment goals, and market outlook. The Wellness Wheel
A Holistic Approach to Well-Being
by Jan Cullinane
In the early 1990s, Thomas J. Sweeney and J. Melvin Witmer, professors in Counselor Education at Ohio University, developed a simple visual model that incorporated seven major areas of wellness. When we hear the word “wellness,” it’s often the physical and mental dimensions that first come to mind, but wellness, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Wellness involves incorporating healthy habits on a daily basis.
We don’t want to just survive—we want to thrive!
How To Interpret the Wellness Wheel
Different wheels have been created by various people—some wheels include up to as many as 12 areas of wellness, but the one pictured here is the “original” wheel, and it addresses the major life areas. Of course, these areas are interconnected and overlap, but let’s briefly describe each segment of the wellness wheel that would reflect a positive/healthy approach to life.
Physical: You achieve and maintain a healthy body and mind through smart food, drink, and activity choices.
Social: You feel like you “belong;” have the level of needed support from others; and have a satisfactory number, quality, and range of relationships.
Environmental: You make environmentally-sound choices where you work, live, and visit.
Financial: You live within/below your means; carry necessary insurance; have a budget for emergencies; contribute to a retirement account if applicable; and have a good credit score (700 or above is considered good; above 800 is considered excellent; most consumers have a credit score between 600 and 750).
Spiritual: You have purpose and a sense of meaning in your life; you can “forgive and forget;” your life is guided by ethics and a moral code.
Emotional: You feel you are in control of your life; you can adapt to change; you have a generally positive attitude; you laugh often; and you participate in fun and enjoyable activities.
Intellectual: You consider yourself a “lifelong learner;” you seek out new challenges and experiences that are outside your comfort zone; you are empathetic and can understand things from someone else’s perspective.
HEALTHY LIVING
Personalizing Your Wellness Wheel
Let’s say your wheel has a few bent/broken spokes in it, which prevents you from getting the most out of life. You can work to improve each segment of your wheel. Concentrate on addressing one or two items at a time for each wheel segment. Here are a few specific suggestions that may make your “wheel” run more smoothly in each area:
Physical: Concentrate on endurance, strength, and flexibility. Do an activity you enjoy (that’s critical so you’ll stay with it) at least four or five days a week. Consider walking, running, dancing, jumping rope, biking, playing a sport (I love tennis), or a combination of activities. Buy some hand weights for strength, and use them at home if you don’t want to join a gym. Start eating better by adding more whole fruits and vegetables to your diet while cutting down on fat-laden desserts. Drink more water and less soda.
Social: Join a club (I belong to a club that offers tennis, which also plays a huge role in creating my social circle). Patronize your local library; you won’t believe the free activities your local library offers—from computer classes to art classes to book clubs to speakers, etc. If you enjoy walking, ask a friend to join you, which combines both social and physical segments of your
“wheel.” Adopt or get a pet—they provide purpose, routine, and structure … and often unconditional love.
Environmental: Recycle glass, paper, and plastic if possible. Keep your home/office organized and neat. Use re-usable, eco-friendly bags at the grocery store. Donate unused but unexpired food to shelters or food banks. About 50 billion water bottles a day are used in the United States each year, according to Earthday.org. Using a reusable water container can prevent about 120 water bottles a year from becoming plastic waste.
Financial: Track your spending and see where your money is going. Consider working with a professional such as a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) if you need help. Consider a part-time or full-time job—you might find you enjoy the social benefits along with the financial benefits.

Spiritual: Consider yoga or meditation. Forgive yourself (but vow to try to be a better and kinder person). Practice positive self-talk, mindfulness, and connect with your inner beliefs.
Emotional: Be aware of your triggers: do you self-soothe by going on a spending spree or over-eating when you’re depressed? Keep a journal of your feelings—it can be therapeutic and revealing.
Intellectual: Learn a new language. Play games (I play Trivia, Wordle, and do crossword puzzles online—all free). Audit a class at your local university or community college. Depending on where you live, these may be tuition free if you’re over a certain age and on a space-available basis (you’ll experience the joy of learning without having to write papers or take tests). Read books outside your usual genres—joining a “real” book club (deep discussion and no wine!) is one of the best things I’ve done. I read books others have chosen, and I’ve learned a lot by reading outside my comfort zone.
A “Wellness Wheel” can help our lives roll along more smoothly and create a richer, more balanced, and more fulfilling life. Give it a try.

Remember the catchy 1962 song by the Beach Boys, “Surfin’ Safari?” I do, although I didn’t realize as a pre-teen that “safari” is a Swahili word that means journey, and until I looked up the exact lyrics for this column, I thought they were “Come on a safari with me,” not “Come on and safari with me.” Indeed, my three-week trip to Keyna and Tanzania in the summer of 2024 was quite the safari or journey. Not only because of the opportunity to observe wild animals, including the “Big Five”—lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and the majestically-horned African Cape buffalo—and seeing the giant baobab trees in person, but also because of the additional experiences during this memorable trip. Visiting does some good, too, as safaris contribute to the local economy, support conservation efforts, allow animals to roam freely within huge conservation areas, and help foster and preserve biodiversity.
After a career teaching Biology and Anatomy & Physiology at the college and high school levels, my current “encore career” consists of writing holistic retirement books and speaking about the non-financial aspects of retirement. I’m fortunate to be in charge of my own schedule. So, when it was time to plan a trip, I wanted one that combined my love of nature and animals, my love of learning, my love of novelty, and my love of meeting others.
A three-week trip, “The Best of Kenya and Tanzania” with O.A.T. (Overseas Adventure Travel) fit the bill. The trip combined sightseeing and adventure with opportunities to get to know the area more intimately and to discuss the challenges, controversies, and opportunities of the areas we visited.
Our safari group of 11 people visited a Kenyan primary school, where we interacted with the children (interesting aside—all classes are taught in English beginning in the primary grades). We walked through a slum in Kenya, which is home to more than a million people, and had the opportunity to visit the home of a family of three who live in a house of about 400 square feet with a double bed, a single bed, a hot plate, their clothing, and without running water or a bathroom.
We were invited into homes in various locations that were arranged by the tour company for an honest exchange of questions and answers, met with tribes that live in—and off—the land in the national preserves (one tribe sleeps in hollowed-out giant Baobab trees), visited a market patronized by the local people, and met a tribal woman who was working to discontinue the tradition of FMG—female genital mutilation (clitorectomies)—that exists among some tribes. We were exposed to experiences that reflected the diversity of Africa.
TRAVEL
During the wildlife viewing portion of our trip, we stayed in safari camps in Tanzania and Kenya that had facilities I’d describe as “glamping”—tents on raised platforms with king or queen beds, running water, toilets, and electricity. The showers were by appointment and were quite interesting; warm water in large containers would be hoisted up by those who ran the camp and poured into large bucket-like receptacles on the “roof” of our tent, and then poured into the shower through a pipe that ended in a showerhead where we could control the flow of water. Spartan, but ingenious. Meals on safari were primarily buffet-style, and sometimes we’d pack a lunch to take with us when we were having especially long safari rides. We’d have one or two several-hour drives per day in the safari vans alongside a driver, our guide (Ebenezer, who was terrific), and seating for six additional people. We had two vans to accommodate our group of 11.
The roads throughout Serengeti National Park and the two other conservation areas we visited were unpaved but hard-packed, a bit bumpy but not uncomfortable. We visited during the “winter” in Africa, which means little rain and warm but not overly-oppressive heat. And … the animals! You can see from my pictures that we were up close and personal with a lot of wildlife. We saw lions mating by the road, herds of elephants lumbering alongside our safari van, “towers” of stately giraffes, and “bloats” of hippos in the water. We were thrilled to see many animals in addition to the “Big Five” on our trip, including brilliantly-plumed birds, hyenas patiently awaiting their chance to eat the prey when the lions finished feasting, and thousands of small antelopes and grass-eating wildebeests. It was a nature-lover’s dream.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how well our group of 11 travelers bonded and shared stories and laughs. In addition to three married couples, there was Ellen, a grandmother who took her grandson (she gives each grandchild—when he/she is entering high school—his/her choice of destination and then she books the trip), and three other women, two of whom were widowed and the other divorced. Although the two widowed women were the only two who knew one another at the beginning of the trip, by the end of our three-week journey, we were all friends. Isn’t that one of the benefits of travel? And, a little group peer pressure helped me expand my horizons, figuratively and literally. My new friends and travel companions convinced me to do a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti, which got me out of my comfort zone. It was a magical sunrise voyage high above the African plains to cap off a magical trip.
This safari was indeed a journey—of beauty, friendship, novelty, helping animals and supporting the African economy, and pushing our own limits just a little bit. So, yes, “Come on and safari …”

Finding Community and Adventure on The Bluffs on the Cape Fear
Nestled along the serene banks of the Cape Fear River, The Bluffs community has become a haven for those seeking the perfect blend of natural beauty, vibrant community, and proximity to the historic charm of downtown Wilmington, NC. For Robin and Michael Shatzkin and Paul and Jennifer Webster, moving to The Bluffs marked the beginning of an inspiring new chapter. Each couple discovered not just a place to live, but a lifestyle that enriches their daily lives with friendship, exploration, and connection.
From New York’s Fast Pace to North Carolina’s Natural Serenity
Robin Shatzkin’s journey to The Bluffs began unexpectedly during an Ideal-LIVING Virtual Real Estate Show during the pandemic in 2021. A drone video showcasing the lush greenery and serene landscapes of The Bluffs captured her attention, igniting a curiosity that transformed into reality. After a lifetime in bustling New York, Robin and her husband Michael were ready for a change. “I never imagined not being a New
Yorker,” Robin admits, “but we were looking for a place with seasons, culture, access to the ocean, and an airport close by.”
The Shatzkins visited Wilmington to explore the area and were immediately captivated. They celebrated their anniversary weekend by exploring potential homes and fell in love with The Bluffs’ picturesque setting. “As we drove across the bridge, Michael said, ‘I feel like I’m coming home,’” Robin recalls. That sentiment solidified their decision, and they moved into their new home in August 2024.
ON THE MOVE
Building Connections Through Community
For Robin, The Bluffs became more than just a neighborhood; it was an opportunity to foster meaningful relationships. She spearheaded “Friends Becoming Neighbors,” a group that has grown to include over 170 members. They have one Zoom call per month that provides a platform for residents to connect, share resources, and support one another. Robin cherishes the sense of belonging she’s found. “The generosity here is incredible,” she says. “People are always willing to lend a hand, whether it’s moving furniture or sharing a kayak for an outing.”
A Transition to Coastal Living
Paul and Jennifer Webster, originally from northwest New Jersey, also sought a change of pace. Having spent years managing a large rural property, they craved a balance between nature and convenience. Their search led them to The Bluffs, where the abundance of mature trees and spacious lots immediately caught their attention. “We loved how much of the land was left untouched,” Jennifer shares. Their decision to move was cemented after a year of renting in downtown Wilmington while their home was being built. The proximity allowed them to participate in decisions about their build and explore the vibrant Wilmington area. “Being close made it easy to adjust plans,” Jennifer explains. “It also gave us time to experience everything the community and the region have to offer.”
Thriving in an Active and Friendly Environment
The Websters were initially apprehensive about integrating into a new community without children to facilitate connections. However, they were pleasantly surprised by the warmth and camaraderie at The Bluffs. Jennifer says, “There’s so much to do— kayaking, pickleball, book clubs. Everyone is welcoming.”
Paul, who enjoys kayaking, appreciates the convenience of the nearby river and the full-moon paddling events organized within the neighborhood. Their favorite feature of their new home is the screened porch, designed as the centerpiece of their house. “We built the whole house around it,” they laugh. From this cherished spot, they enjoy tranquil mornings and evenings, soaking in the serene surroundings.
Amenities That Enrich Everyday Life
For both the Shatzkins and Websters, The Bluffs’ amenities are a major highlight. The community’s private beach house on Oak Island provides a perfect retreat for coastal relaxation, complete with parking, showers, and a refrigerator for convenience. “It makes beach days so easy,” Jennifer notes.
In addition, the community fosters a sense of adventure and well-being with activities like kayaking and walking trails near Wilmington for dining and cultural outings. Robin marvels at the diverse backgrounds of her neighbors, comparing the experience to being a college freshman again. “Everyone has a story, and we’re all new here, creating something together.”
Reflections on the Journey
The decision to leave the familiar for something new can be daunting, but for these families, it has been a transformative experience. “You don’t have to wait until retirement,” Robin advises. “Life is too short to be stuck. It’s okay to love where you were and still embrace change.”
Paul shares a similar sentiment, encouraging others to avoid overthinking every decision. “You’ll always second-guess yourself, but ultimately, the choices you make are the right ones. Find a place you love and run with it.”
For the Shatzkins and Websters, The Bluffs on the Cape Fear has proven to be more than just a community—it’s a place where life’s next chapter is filled with beauty, adventure, and heartfelt connections. Whether it’s sipping coffee on a screened porch, kayaking under the moonlight, or forming lifelong friendships, they’ve found a true home where every day feels like a new beginning.
