Like a thriving (and growing) village center, with everything from subs and sushi to a wine store and an ice cream shop. Groceries, a UF Health and a Y right down the street. And honest-to-goodness nature surrounding it all, with trails and parks weaving through the landscape. It’s a new kind of lowcountry living, where the beachy vibe of Amelia Island and the culture of Jacksonville meet comfortably in the middle. No wonder so many people follow their hearts here.

EDITORS' CHOICE

Welcome to this special issue of Ideal-LIVING magazine. Our editors have selected some of our favorite destinations and things to do throughout the U.S. and abroad. Some of these locations we've been to personally, and some are on our wish lists. Most of them are near our Best Places to Live featured planned amenity communities (p. 66). We include seaside towns and the most walkable cities, hiking trails, and blueways. We encourage you to visit these places on your trips to find your ideal destination, life, and home. Or, maybe you'll find a town or a restaurant that piques your interest, then visit some communities while you are there. Whether you are still working or are nearing retirement, these destinations offer something for everyone. And, on July 13th, I'll host a 30-minute webinar to talk about the best places to live (see page 50).

As editor, one of my favorite things is to hear the stories of our readers. I'd love to hear from you. Let me know your favorite places or where you have decided to move.

SEASIDE TOWNS

SOUTH CAROLINA

PANAMA BEAUFORT,

CAPE CHARLES, VIRGINIA

Set along the Chesapeake Bay’s eastern shore, near the Delmarva Peninsula’s southern end, Cape Charles is Virginia’s most charming seaside town. On Mason Avenue in the central business district, you’ll find historic buildings that have been converted into coffee shops, wine bars, and brew pubs, plus local retailers and restaurants featuring the catch of the day. The beautifully restored Palace Theatre, the center of cultural activities in Cape Charles, features a year-round schedule of events that include symphony orchestras and jazz bands, ballets and theatrical performances, and classic movies on the big screen. Nearby resort golf courses, charter-boat marinas, and boardwalk trails in the Cape Charles Natural Area Preserve offer refreshing outdoor activities.

REHOBOTH BEACH, DELAWARE

Rehoboth Beach is Delaware’s premier destination for summer family vacations and the yearround seaside lifestyle. The famous Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk is located in the heart of a 30-mile stretch of unspoiled oceanfront with its lively arcades and fresh-seafood restaurants. Deep-sea fishing, sailing, paddle boarding, and ocean kayaking are among the most popular outdoor recreations. More leisurely activities include tax-free shopping at local boutiques and outlets, followed by an evening of musical entertainment at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand Concert Series. Just to the south are resort-style accommodations at Dewey Beach, gateway to the pristine nature trails and ocean walks at the Delaware Seashore State Park.

SEASIDE TOWNS

BEAUFORT, NORTH CAROLINA

The historic town is located in the heart of the North Carolina Inner Banks region known as the Crystal Coast. Front Street is the perfect dockside stroll for bookstore browsing, antique shopping, and casual dining at unique local restaurants. Be sure to include a tour of Historic District homes and a visit to the North Carolina Maritime Museum, where traditional boatbuilding skills can be observed. Beaufort is also a nationally renowned destination for kayaking, sailing, and sport fishing, or you can take a ferry ride to enjoy the 56 miles of undeveloped oceanfront at the Cape Lookout National Seashore and the wildlife trails in the Rachel Carson Coastal Reserve.

BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA

A graceful mix of old and new, Beaufort is an inviting center of history and culture in the South Carolina Lowcountry. The 300-acre downtown is a National Historic Landmark and many restored buildings today are home to cozy inns, unique shops and galleries, and waterfront restaurants with live entertainment. Set on the largest of a dozen local barrier islands amid a network of tidal estuaries perfect for kayaking and fishing, Beaufort is the heart of a region that also includes seaside resorts, the oceanfront Hunting Island State Park, and a variety of active-lifestyle residential communities.

SOUTHPORT, NORTH CAROLINA

This seaside town was founded in 1792 at a strategic site where the Cape Fear River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Once the haunt of pirates and blockade runners, Southport today is a hometown for residents and a destination for visitors who appreciate its sunny and mild coastal climate. The downtown waterfront features shops, galleries, and cafes in a picture-perfect setting that has hosted several feature film and television show productions. Southport is also the launching point for ferry rides to Bald Head Island and its historic lighthouse, as well as short drives to the Brunswick Coast’s family-friendly barrier islands with big beach houses, long fishing piers, and top-flight golf courses.

ST. MARYS, GEORGIA

St. Marys is an engaging port town where you can catch a ferry to the Cumberland Island National Seashore with its historic sites and 17 miles of pristine beaches. And that’s just one of the outdoor adventures to enjoy in an area blessed with a mild coastal climate and numerous hiking, biking, and kayaking trails. Downtown St. Marys features a lively waterfront park, Historic District tours of homes, gardens, churches, bed-and-breakfast inns, and riverside cafes. You can also enjoy one-of-a-kind attractions like the St. Marys Submarine Museum and take a breezy ride on the St. Marys Express Train through the coastal Georgia countryside.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA

Founded by Spanish explorers in 1565, St. Augustine is a North Florida coastal city that’s certainly a must-see destination for history lovers. Especially impressive are the star fort at Castillo de San Marcos and the sacred grounds of Mission Nombre de Dios, just two of the area’s historic sites. Downtown St. Augustine mixes those legendary places with modern-art galleries, antique shops, trendy wine bars, and traditional fine-dining restaurants. Visiting families can also enjoy morning strolls along the city’s signature Bayfront Walk, daytime activities that include water-fun parks and eco-tours, quiet oceanfront evenings at Anastasia State Park, and overnight accommodations at some of Florida’s finest golf-andtennis resorts.

SARASOTA, FLORIDA

Sarasota is a hub of culture and commerce on the Florida Gulf Coast, a sunny destination for a growing number of retirees and working families. If you’re a first-time visitor to Sarasota, check out the unique Ringling Museum of Art, which displays historic circus memorabilia and the famous family’s extensive art collection. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens feature orchids and other tropical flowers beneath century-old banyan trees, or you can kayak through a mangrove forest at an area nature preserve. For the complete Sarasota experience, head over to Lido Key for upscale shopping and dining at Saint Armand’s Circle, then take a romantic sunset walk along the Gulf shorefront at Siesta Key or Sarasota Beach.

For year-round outdoor recreational opportunities, few places compare with Panama City Beach. It’s located in the heart of a Florida Emerald Coast region that features 27 miles of sugar-sand beaches, including popular St. Andrews State Park and the undeveloped shoreline of Shell Island. For even more natural activities, you can take a dolphin tour, snorkel in a green lagoon, and take a boardwalk hike on Conservation Park’s loop trails. Additional family-fun activities include visits to the Shipwreck Island Waterpark, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!, and Gulf World Marine Park. Casual dining and entertaining amusements are available all day at Pier Park. Or, you can take an evening stroll in historic downtown Panama City to catch dinner and a show at a lively nightlife venue.

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA

Pensacola on the Florida Panhandle is a thriving regional commercial center that’s proud of its 450-year multicultural history. Among the most enjoyable activities are the self-guided walking tours highlighting the city’s colonial archeology, cultural heritage, and maritime history. Just as impressive is Pensacola’s commitment to the contemporary performing arts with its own professional ballet, opera, theater, and symphony orchestra companies. You can also enjoy fine wine and courtyard dining in the Seville Quarter or shop for local crafts and fresh produce in the downtown Palafox Market. The area’s best outdoor adventures are just across the bay at Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, and the three naturally historic parks at the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

ROAD TRIPS

After spending too much time around the house in recent years, the summer and fall of 2023 are the perfect seasons to go on a revitalizing road trip. So, pack up the car and head out with your favorite traveling partner for a journey of adventure to a long-planned destination or just to see where the road may take you.

THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

If you’ve got a road-trip bucket list, the Blue Ridge Parkway should be at the top. Riding along the backbone of the Appalachian Mountains for 469 miles in western Virginia and North Carolina, the Blue Ridge Parkway is an engineering marvel where every turn reveals another postcard for America the Beautiful. Rising to elevations as high as 6,000 feet, the two-lane highway is carried across ravines and other roads by more than 170 bridges and through the mountains in 26 tunnels. Big trucks and commercial billboards aren’t allowed on the route, where the maximum speed limit is 45 mph, a leisurely pace that makes it possible to enjoy the views while driving and at the 200 scenic overlooks along the way.

From Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains, you could drive the entire Parkway in about 14 straight hours. But, this national treasure is best savored in segments as a multi-day adventure, with plenty of time to stop at historic sites, folk-art centers, and nature preserves with hiking trails and waterfalls. At each of the two dozen Parkway access points, there are welcoming towns with local restaurants, shops, inns, and unique attractions from the Peaks of Otter to the Biltmore Estate. And, while the toll-free road is open year-round, it’s best to check the National Park Service website and download the app for road-condition updates and timing for the peak colors if you’re planning a spectacular Blue Ridge Parkway tour this autumn.

Side trips can include caverns, historic battlefields, and riverside hiking trails, while Big Meadows at the halfway point is a popular stop for lunch or an overnight stay. THE TENNESSEE MUSIC HIGHWAY

The official “Tennessee Music Highway” is a 210-mile stretch of Interstate 40 from Nashville to Memphis. Still, you can nearly double the length of that trip and see the entire song-filled state by starting in the eastern Appalachian Mountain region. The city of Bristol is known as “The Birthplace of Country Music” because many of the genre’s early innovators, like the Carter family, came from the area, having taken elements of traditional folk- and bluegrass-style music to create a uniquely American sound. And, just south of Knoxville, stop in Pigeon Forge to enjoy Dolly Parton’s musical theme park at Dollywood. Heading west on I-40 past Crossville and Cookeville, you arrive in Nashville, the world-famous “Home of Country Music.” Most of the major recording studios and touring performers are

based here, often appearing at the Gaylord Opryland Resort. You can also head downtown for special shows at the Opry’s original location in Ryman Auditorium or catch a rising star at one of the dozens of nearby nightlife venues.

Along the Tennessee Music Highway are sites devoted to legends like Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Eddie Arnold, and Tina Turner, as well as unique attractions like the International Rockabilly Hall of Fame. The tour reaches its crescendo on Beale Street in Memphis, where pioneering blues musicians established the style that led to modern rock-and-roll. It’s only fitting that your last musical stop is the final home of “The King,” Elvis Presley’s Graceland Estate.

ROAD TRIPS

THE NATCHEZ TRACE PARKWAY

From Nashville, TN, to the banks of the Mississippi River, the Natchez Trace Parkway is a scenic 444-mile recreational roadway through parts of three southern states. It roughly follows the ancient track used first by Native Americans and later by European settlers to traverse the wilderness region. Along the way today are historic sites, casual country diners, rural towns with cozy inns, and portions of the original trail that you can hike on foot or explore on horseback. Major attractions include the Elvis Presley Birthplace & Museum in Tupelo and the riverfront town of Natchez. From there, you can jump on to the Mississippi Blues Trail, an authentic American musical journey that takes you north to Tunica or down to the Gulf of Mexico coast.

U.S. HIGHWAY 17

Often called “The Coastal Highway” because it links major cities on the Southeastern Atlantic seaboard, U.S. Highway 17 rolls for just over 1,200 miles through five states. But, the north-south route actually begins in the Virginia mountain town of Winchester, followed by a leisurely ride through the countryside past Fredericksburg and directly to the Yorktown historic site near Williamsburg.

The North Carolina section of U.S. 17 is probably the most scenic, passing over estuary bridges and through delightful waterfront towns like Edenton and New Bern on the way to the port city of Wilmington. Next up is the Carolina Grand Strand around the vacation hub of Myrtle Beach, followed by the South Carolina coastal gems of Charleston and Beaufort.

On the Georgia side of the border is Savannah and the state’s Sea Islands on the way to Jacksonville. The next stretch goes through “Old Florida” towns, past Orlando, and through the Fort Myers-Sarasota area to a southern terminus in the Gulf Coast town of Punta Gorda.

U.S. Highway 17 isn’t a parkway or an interstate, so you’re going to encounter local traffic on this road trip. Most of the big urban areas have marked “Alt 17” routes that keep you moving on less congested bypasses. But, if you have a few days or more to travel, with overnight stays in historic downtowns or nearby beach resorts, a road trip on “The Coastal Highway” is a great adventure that includes visits to many of the South’s finest destinations.

THE FLORIDA KEYS OVERSEAS HIGHWAY

You won’t actually leave the country if you take a road trip down the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, but you will end up at the southernmost point in the continental United States. Originally established as a train route in 1912 and later converted to a roadway as the final stretch of U.S. 1, the Overseas Highway flies above the water and leapfrogs between islands on 42 bridges for a total of 113 miles. Starting on Key Largo south of Miami, the roadway takes you past the popular sport-fishing destinations of Islamorada and Marathon to state parks and marine sanctuaries in the Lower Keys. Your final destination is Key West, with its famous homes, lively arts community, and nightly waterfront sunset celebrations.

TOP 10 REASONS TO MOVE TO A PLANNED AMENITY COMMUNITY

Hampton Hall | South Carolina

Currahee Club | Georgia

Lots of Amenities. Golf, tennis, pickleball, marinas, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, pools, fitness centers, spas, equestrian facilities, bocce ball and shuffleboard are just a few examples.

Sense of Community. When asked what residents like most about a planned community, the answer is almost always “the people.” Planned amenity communities have a strong sense of community where people get to know each other well and form close friendships.

Walkability. The top amenity requested by Ideal-LIVING readers is walking trails, and the good news is that almost every planned community has a network of walking trails to help residents stay in shape.

Healthy Living. It’s easy to stay healthy when you are surrounded by world-class amenities that encourage a healthy lifestyle, from golf, tennis, and pickleball to pools and workout facilities with fitness classes and even fitness directors.

Security. Many luxury planned communities are gated and have 24/7 security, which can give residents peace of mind.

Social Clubs. Some communities have 200+ social clubs. Join any club that interests you. If there isn’t one, you can always start one, and others will join you.

Self-contained. Planned amenity communities are often designed to be self-contained so that residents have everything they need within walking distance or a short drive, including restaurants, grocery stores, and doctors’ offices.

Proximity to Health Care. As planned developments attract many retirees, quality medical centers and hospitals are generally nearby.

Maintenance-free Living. Many luxury retirement communities offer maintenance-free living, which means that residents don’t have to worry about yard work or home repairs. This can be a great way to reduce stress in retirement.

Beautifully-Maintained Homes and Landscaping. Planned communities have architectural guidelines that ensure the home’s design integrity and a community filled with beautiful flora and fauna.

A planned amenity community is a residential development where careful thought has been given to the lifestyle of its residents, enabling them to lead active, fulfilling lives.

Ave Maria Health Care Opportunities Close to Home

Southwest Florida’s fastest-growing community attracts a plethora of medical providers

Ave Maria’s growing list of medical providers has become a staple of conveniences for residents and surrounding community members looking for care not far from home. Recent arrivals of chiropractors, optometrists, women’s health specialists, hearing specialists, medical suppliers, and aesthetic medicine have met the growing demand for wellness services.

“The community requires a variety of health-specific needs, and it felt fitting to establish in Ave Maria because of that,” said Dr. Stephanie Olson of Family Chiropractic and Sports Rehab.

For many physicians and business owners, the decision to serve Ave Maria was also a love story, often finding their forever home with the mission of bringing their needed services to the town and surrounding areas.

Optometrist Luisa Del Toro, OD, knew she belonged in Ave Maria the first time she visited from Weston, FL, noting its peaceful atmosphere. She sold her busy south Florida practice, purchased a home, and opened Ave Maria Optical in late 2020 in the Ave Maria Town Center.

“Ave Maria is like a big family,” said Dr. Del Toro. “Neighbors know and help each other.”

Dr. Raul Enad established his concierge medical practice in 2022 and soon after moved into his new Ave Maria

home with his wife and three daughters. His clinic specializes in internal, functional, regenerative, and aesthetic medicinal treatments. “It is my practice’s goal to bring a comprehensive approach to any illness and to offer in-depth testing to tailor a personalized treatment plan, thereby ensuring safe, affordable, and ethical wellness tools.”

Dr. Ana Garcia-Iguaran relocated to Ave Maria, attracted by the town’s values and the opportunity to make a difference in an area without women-specific health services.

“I’ve been in an urban setting for 15 years and felt my practice was stifled in some ways,” she said. “When I realized Ave Maria was so close to my Miami home, there was no hesitation in moving my practice to this community. This is a long-term commitment for me.”

NCH Healthcare System has announced the opening of an Immediate Care Center set to open in summer 2024 in Ave Maria’s Midtown Plaza. “Ave Maria’s growth has led to significant interest in new services wanting to locate within the community,” said Cee Cee Marinelli, director of development for Ave Maria. “To complement the continued residential growth, we look forward to providing more health resources to Ave Maria and the surrounding communities.”

BIKING TRAILS

Biking is a great way to stay active and healthy as you age

Swamp Rabbit Trail — South Carolina

The Swamp Rabbit Trail in upstate South Carolina runs for more than 23 miles in various segments, but the prime route for bicyclists is a 12-mile stretch along the Reedy River. Start your ride in the heart of Greenville at Cleveland Park and head north past the Falls Park waterfalls to the new Unity Park. The paved path is 12 feet wide, in addition to a soft-surface lane for foot traffic, and there are restroom stations with bike racks and water fountains all along the way. Passing through the Furman University campus, you arrive in the aptly-named town of Travelers Rest after about a two-hour ride. Take a refreshment break there, then head down the Swamp Rabbit Trail for an evening of sidewalk shopping and casual dining in lively downtown Greenville.

Withlacoochee State Trail — Florida

The Withlacoochee State Trail is one of Florida’s premier destinations for cyclists, a 46-mile paved path through small communities and impressive natural areas in three counties. The north-south route starts with passages in the towns of Citrus Springs and Inverness to historic Fort Cooper State Park and along the untamed shores of Lake Holathlikaha. After a refreshment stop in Floral Springs, the trail meanders through the wilds of the Withlacoochee State Forest and the Croom Wildlife Management Area to its terminus in Tribley. Covering generally flat terrain and with convenient rest stations at trailheads along the way, the Withlacoochee State Trail can be comfortably biked in a single day or part of a full-weekend cycling adventure in central Florida.

The Cumberland Trail is a back-country pathway for hikers that covers 11 counties in East Tennessee, rolling along the ridges and through the gorges of the Cumberland Plateau. Currently, there are about 210 open miles on the trail, divided into 28 sections with more than 50 trailhead access points. Each part is rated for difficulty and highlights wildlife, waterfalls, and sweeping pinnacle views. When completed, the Cumberland Trail will extend more than 300 miles and connect national parks on the Kentucky border in the north and at the southern terminus on Signal Mountain near Chattanooga. While managed by the state, much of the construction and maintenance on the trail is done by a corps of volunteers from towns and residential communities along the route.

MOUNTAINS-TO-SEA TRAIL — NORTH CAROLINA

The Mountains-to-Sea Trail traverses the entire state of North Carolina from the Great Smokies to the Outer Banks, eventually covering nearly 1,200 miles. About 720 miles of the dedicated footpath have been completed, with some temporary backroadroute connections. Along the trail are 10 state parks and nine national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges, with convenient campgrounds and inns on the way for multi-day hikers. The 18 trail segments range from 35 to 90 miles and are rated for difficulty from strenuous in the western mountains to easy on the flat coastal plain. Two optional blueway shortcuts for paddlers on the Yadkin and Neuse rivers are also part of the complete Mountains-to-Sea Trail experience.

THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL

The granddaddy of American hiking routes runs for 2,200 miles from Maine to Georgia, with hundreds of access points, making it possible to walk some of the most scenic portions in a single day.

BLUEWAYS

Networks of water trails that can be found on rivers, lakes, canals, and coastlines

THE GREAT CALUSA BLUEWAY — FLORIDA

In a state with great paddling trails from The Panhandle to The Keys, Florida’s Great Calusa Blueway stands out for its splendor and diversity. Meandering for 190 miles along the Gulf Coast, the Great Calusa mixes fresh- and saltwater segments in Lee County near Fort Myers and Sanibel Island. The well-marked trail keeps paddlers and boaters separate for an undisturbed chance to see more than 300 species of migratory and native birds. In the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve at the trail’s southern end, sightings of manatees and dolphins come and go with the tides. Dozens of launch sites and local outfitters make getting on and off the blueway easy, or you can design your own Great Calusa trip with the phone app.

EDISTO RIVER CANOE AND KAYAK TRAIL — SOUTH CAROLINA

Winding gracefully through the South Carolina Lowcountry, the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail is a 62-mile segment of the nation’s longest free-flowing blackwater river. Rare species like the red-cockaded woodpecker and southern bald eagle are among the wildlife often sighted along the mostly pristine riverbanks. The blueway is conveniently divided into ten distinctive segments of up to nine miles in length for easy half-day trips. Enjoying the entire route and side channels can be a multi-day adventure, so paddlers appreciate the riverside campsites at two state parks along the way or can opt for more unique lodgings at the Edisto River Treehouses. When conditions are right, local river volunteers also guide day trips with canoes and kayaks supplied for a modest donation.

Straddling the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, Great Smoky Mountains National Park covers more than 815 square miles that contain some of the highest peaks and most biodiverse valleys in the Eastern United States.

observation tower and preserved historic villages like Cades Cove. There are also more than 850 miles of hiking trails, including 70 miles of the Appalachian Trail, ranging from challenging climbs to meadow strolls so that everyone can enjoy the natural wonders. LAKE LIVING

Find peace and tranquility

TELLICO LAKE — TENNESSEE

Tellico Lake stretches for 33 miles through the Little Tennessee River Valley in the state’s eastern mountain woodlands. Established in 1979 with the construction of Tellico Dam to control floods and create hydroelectric power, Tellico Lake today is home to resort-style communities with recreational amenities like waterfront golf courses and full-service marinas. Along more than 350 miles of shoreline are countless coves stocked with bass, bluegill, and trout, while the lake’s clear and tranquil waters make it ideal for swimming, sailing, and paddling. Boaters and kayakers can also visit two adjacent historic sites on the lakeshore: Fort Loudon State Park, with its faithful reconstruction of the 18th-century frontier outpost, and the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, which honors the legacy of the famous Cherokee leader.

LAKE KEOWEE — SOUTH CAROLINA

Lake Keowee and its sister Lake Jocassee are the sparkling jewels of upstate South Carolina. Set in the Blue Ridge foothills, Lake Keowee is 26 miles long with 300+ miles of shoreline in a Christmas-tree shape of still waters that are perfect for exploring by kayak and paddleboard. The fishing in shaded inlets and around wild islands is excellent, with yellow perch, rainbow trout, and three types of bass among the most popular catches. Boaters often meet up on summer evenings at Waterfall Cove and the 30-foot-tall boulder called Jumping Rock. On the north end of the lake are scenic waterfront hiking trails in Keowee/Toxaway State Park, while the town of Seneca is on the southern shore that’s just a 10-minute drive to the Clemson University campus.

HORSE COUNTRY

Pack your boots, it's time to head for the rolling hills

AIKEN, SOUTH CAROLINA

Since the early 1900s, thoroughbred horses and their owners have enjoyed the mild winters in Aiken, SC. Today there are more than 20 world-class horse farms and training facilities in the immediate area that support a year-round calendar of polo matches, steeplechase races, and major horse shows, plus the Aiken Triple Crown every spring. But it’s not just about being a spectator: Aiken is also home to Hitchcock Woods, an absolutely unique 2,000-acre urban wilderness with 70 miles of riding trails for residents anytime and visitors with the help of a local outfitter. And, in historic Aiken’s revitalized downtown area, you’ll find equestrian-themed shops and restaurants, cozy inns, antique stores, and music venues often featuring bluegrass bands.

OCALA, FLORIDA

Ocala and surrounding Marion County are officially known as “The Horse Capital of the World®,” a fitting moniker for an area with more than 1,000 horse farms and equine-training centers. From thoroughbreds to Clydesdales, nearly every breed flourishes in the sunny Ocala area, featuring major events like the Live Oak International every spring. The renowned Florida Horse Park, an official training site for the U.S. Olympic Equestrian Team, is one of many local facilities that offer access to 80+ miles of equestrian trails on the Cross Florida Greenway. And, the most recent arrival on the scene is the new World Equestrian Center-Ocala with its 7,500-seat competition stadium, year-round calendar of events, and The Equestrian Hotel, a luxury resort with fine-dining restaurants and spa facilities.

A CULINARY JOURNEY

Do yourself a solid and grab a snack because we’re about to embark on a tantalizing journey through a world of epicurean delights. Below, we cover everything from ambitious barbecue joints to progressive brewpubs to stellar seafood. Prepare to be captivated as we unveil the pinnacle of dining experiences—AKA the crème de la crème—across six distinct categories from various regions encompassing the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia, Delaware, Florida, Tennessee, Colorado, and New Mexico.

Bodacious Barbecue

Wiley’s Championship BBQ | Savannah, GA wileyschampionshipbbq.com

A Sunshine State staple since 2009, 4 Rivers is celebrated for its commitment to classics like hand-sliced brisket (30day wet-aged, rubbed, and smoked for 18 hours), baked beans, and cornbread. It’s owner John Rivers’ pledge to plucky flavor combinations, however, that truly put this place on (and all over) the map and keeps the dining room crowded with customers. The Six Shooter, a mouthwatering mountain of pulled pork, slaw, pickles, and jalapenos on a cheesy grit cake justifies every second you’ll spend in line.

With numerous competition accolades and media features under his BBQ belt, Wiley McCrary is no stranger to his menu items being stamped as “soughtafter southern specialties.” His restaurant’s modest milieu (tucked in a strip mall just off downtown Savannah’s main drag) is no indication of the food’s quality—as the championship ’cue lives up to its title. The slow-cooked pulled pork is miraculously moist, and regulars live for “burnt ends Wednesdays.” Whatever you get, slather on the Better Than Sex sauce or snag a bottle to take home.

If the name Rodney Scott rings a bell, you likely caught his episode of the renowned Netflix series Chef’s Table. Scott’s Lowcountry-style whole hog BBQ is the icon of the bunch, but the pit-smoked chicken, crispy dry-rubbed wings, and freshly baked apple hand-pies are not to be overlooked. A welcoming staff goes out of their way to make sure customers feel like family, and they move the busy line along like pros. The sharp Eastern vinegar sauce is a must on everything.

112 | ideal-LIVING.com
4 Rivers Smokehouse | Tampa, FL 4rsmokehouse.com Scott’s BBQ | Charleston, SC

Southport Smoke House | Southport, NC

southportsmokehouse.com

Wood-smoked is where it’s at, and Southport Smoke House’s chow is just as enchanting as the surrounding area. Expect casual counter-style service, quintessential BBQ plates, and a pulled pork sandwich so good it will melt in your mouth. Patrons get a kick out of the restaurant’s t-shirts sporting the words “We like big butts, and we cannot lie,” but take the tender brisket very seriously. As for the buffalo chips—thick, expertly seasoned waffle-cut fries—they have a cult following all their own.

Billiken’s Smokehouse

Fredericksburg, VA | billikensbbq.com

Elevated BBQ is the heart of this happy hour hub in downtown Fredericksburg. And, while trivia and live music are positively part of the patio’s draw, the smoke-kissed provisions keep guests truly satisfied. Essentials include the loaded cornbread skillet and the brisket mac with glorious gouda pimento cheese and twisty noodles. If one pork product per order doesn’t cut it for you, try the BBLT—a superior sandwich piled with brisket, in-house cured bacon, pepper jack, mayo, and LTO. Swing into Sunday brunch, where the cocktails flaunt memorable garnishes like sliders and ribs.

Sweet P’s BBQ & Downtown Dive Knoxville, TN | sweetpbbq.com

What started as a small, family-owned catering company is now one of Knoxville’s most beloved BBQ havens. Sweet P’s sampler is the way to go if your game plan is to try a medley of meat, and the homemade sides (particularly the mac and cheese loaded with secret spices and smashed ‘tater salad) are homeruns. Don’t miss the barbecue burrito— a more moderately sized version of the colossal El Gigante showcased on “Man v. Food.” Enjoy your meal in the homey dining room, or plop down with your pork in the sunlit beer garden.

Farm-to-Fork Feasts

The FEED Co. Table & Tavern | Chattanooga, TN feedtableandtavern.com

Applauded for its downhome Southern favorites with an upscale spin, this southside spot’s menu covers everything from a 20-hour brisket French dip to locallysourced veggie succotash. FEED’s lineup of eclectic eats screams chic, while the relaxed ambiance of the tavern gives the feel of a friendly neighborhood restaurant. Thanks to an exclusive partnership with Mountain Breeze Farms, you’ll find 100% grass-feed wagyu beef in the form of legendary country-fried steak and meatloaf. An order of the fried Brussels with maple and bacon is necessary for the table.

The Local Restaurant | Naples, FL thelocalnaples.com

Naples’ first farm-and-sea-to-table restaurant, the Local, was originally inspired by Florida’s abundant bounty and long growing season—and it’s easy to see why. The kitchen switches up the menu daily based on what’s delivered, so dive into this bistro with an open mind. With enthusiasm for nutrient-rich foods and healthy cooking techniques, chef and owner Jeff Mitchell is an advocate for all kinds of housemade goodies like cured meats, ricotta, hot sauces, and a majestic

sourdough pizza crust. Vegans delight in the tomato basil bruschetta with homemade almond “cheese,” while grass-fed beef entices the carnivores.

The Obstinate Daughter | Sullivan’s Island, SC theobstinatedaughter.com

There’s no denying that a visit to OD (as the natives call it) is imperative if you find yourself on Sullivan’s Island. One of the leaders in the progressive food movement of Charleston, Obstinate Daughter is lively, thoughtful, and ambrosial. Though many menu items are unmistakably Southern, the French, Italian, and Spanish influences are equally visible. Wood-fired pizzas are only outdone by the seasonal pastas, and thanks to the support of nearby farmers and fishermen, you won’t want to pass up Lowcountry classics like silky frogmore chowder.

Seasons of Durango | Durango, CO seasonsofdurango.com

The farm-to-table notion was a new concept when this American-style tavern surfaced in 1994. Nearly three decades later, Seasons is still serving up wildly fresh fare with ingredients that speak for themselves. The wood-burning grill is the centerpiece of the dining room, while the Chef’s Table seating provides

a front-and-center peek into the theatre of the kitchen. The wine list is essential, and menu selections rotate based on the offerings from southwest Colorado farmers and ranchers. You can’t go wrong with the grilled double-cut pork chops, sticky Hoisin-basted ribs, or oak fire grilled flatbread of the day.

Back Porch Café | Rehoboth Beach, DE backporchcafe.com

Saluted for “quietly cooking slow food for 49 years,” the Back Porch Café is Rehoboth Beach’s answer to seasonal global fusion with a local twist. The fine dining Delaware-based eatery is also a hot spot for remarkable wines, islandy cocktails, and a coffee concoction flamed tableside that’s worth the trip alone. Tucked down an alley off the main drag, this institution is distinguished for its domestic lamb, grilled dayboat scallops, and divine 5-spice duck breast.

Farm & Table | Albuquerque, NM farmandtablenm.com

Farm & Table’s devotion to serving inventive cuisine that’s 80% sourced from area farmers, ranchers, dairies, and food artisans earned it an obvious spot on our list. But it’s also all in the name, as customers adore brunching al fresco on the picturesque patio surrounded by lush farmland. If cozy is what you’re after, pull up a plate of the pork belly inside the historic adobe building. Diners with dietary restrictions will have no problem finding gluten or lactose-free alternatives, and vegetarian assortments (like the blood orange and bleu cheese salad) are artistically plated.

Bold Brewpubs

Coppertail Brewing Co. | Tampa, FL coppertailbrewing.com

If crushing a craft beer alongside housecranked sausage and short rib brisket smash burgers sounds like your ideal Saturday, get your tail to Coppertail Brewing. CB has been slinging solid beers, like their piney West Coast-style flagship, Free Dive IPA, in the historic Ybor neighborhood for nearly a decade, and the grub is just as great. Smoky house specialties include massive (whole) dryrubbed wings and a creamy mahi dip. For a true bar “snack,” the pickled veggies are bright, crunchy, and addictive.

Cape Charles Brewing Company | Cape Charles, VA capecharlesbrewing.com

Steamworks Brewing Company | Durango, CO steamworksbrewing.com

Steamworks surfaced in Durango’s beer scene in the late 90s and has been a bustling locals’ meetup spot ever since. The brewpub’s culinary program extends far beyond traditional bar food with quality items like regionally-raised meats, homegrown produce, and sustainable seafood. If the robust Dirty Burger with bacon stout jam and banana peppers isn’t your jam, go for the Colorado-grown quinoa patty with ale-braised onions, feta, and tzatziki. Couple either with the smooth Steam Engine Lager, arguably the best American-style Amber Lager in the world.

wbbeer.com

Wrightsville Beach Brewery | Wilmington, NC

While Wilmington has seemingly infinite options for partaking in a pint, not every establishment is dedicated to sustainability. Enter eager environmentalist, owner, and head brewer of Wrightsville Beach Brewery: Jud Watkins. But, aside from the fact that Watkins powers the place through solar panels and sources local ingredients, the man makes damn good beer. The seasonally-available Oysterman Stout is a dark, roasty blend that pairs beautifully with seafood, while the Puppy Drum Pale Ale is a light session perfect for washing down one of WBB’s highlypraised pizzas or the tempura cauliflower.

Family-owned, family-run, and built on the premise that quality beer should be served with superior food, Cape Charles Brewing has become a “go-to” location on the outskirts of Virginia’s historic waterfront area. Expect people of all ages to enjoy live music on the spacious lawn or share IPA-battered onion rings in the breezy taproom. Award-winning bites like the brewhouse wings and Eastern-style clam chowder are always a smash, and the golden-fried rockfish (in a sandwich or fish-and-chip form) is fantastic washed down with the delicately malty Nor’easter Pale.

Big River Grille & Brewing Works | Chattanooga, TN bigrivergrille.com

A quick walk to the Tennessee Aquarium, Big River Grille is an always-buzzing downtown destination for Cajun-heavy cuisine and bold “tank-to-table” beers like the aggressively rich Iron Horse Stout, a four-time medal winner layered with English chocolate malt and roasted barley. On the lighter end, the Southern Flyer is crisp, floral, and poured into the batter for the fish and chips. Fish tacos with zesty remoulade and pizzas (whose hand-tossed dough is perfumed by the brewery’s Sweet Magnolia Brown Ale) are among other top picks.

Nexus Brewery + Restaurant | Albuquerque, NM nexusbrewery.com

What helps Nexus stand out in Albuquerque’s thriving craft beer scene isn’t just the beer. It’s the sassy fusion of Southern soul food and New Mexican cuisine (see: hearty gumbo, Cajun chicken chicharrónes, and Frito pie). The outstanding service doesn’t hurt either. Start strong with a frosty pint of the nutty Scottish Ale and finish with the famous fried chicken and waffles, hyped up by legendary Food Network star Guy Fieri. If burnt ends and brisket is what you’re after, spread your love to their second location, Nexus Blue Smokehouse.

Stellar Seafood

Owen’s Fish Camp | Sarasota, FL owensfishcamp.com

Lovingly labeled an “ode to old Florida living,” Owen’s is a casual combination of freshly-caught seafood, cold beer, and bourbon pecan pie. It’s run by the Caragiulo family—additionally famed for their funky-chic sister restaurant, Veronica Fish and Oyster—and their reinvention of the rustic Burns cottage into Owen’s has been a triumph since 2010. The vibrant patio ornamented with string lights, a fire pit, and tiki torches will transport you to oldschool backyard parties with friends. The Camp Basket with fried oysters, shrimp, and grouper is a superb way to sample the best the Gulf has to offer.

Savannah Seafood Shack | Savannah, GA savannahseafoodshack.com

The style of Savannah Seafood Shack may be fast-casual, but make no mistake, the food is fiercely delicious. Featured on Food Network and Travel Channel and with prodigious reviews sweeping the internet, the eatery swiftly earned the title of “best Lowountry boil in Savannah.” Owner Christine Cutlip took this traditional seafood spread, typically enjoyed in a communal setting where dozens

dote over messy heaps of shellfish and sausage, and packaged it into a neat single-serve portion. Also worth a mention: waffle cones stacked with savory ingredients and overstuffed po’boys.

The Ordinary | Charleston, SC eattheordinary.com

Prepare to be pleasantly surprised as you step into The Ordinary, a captivating seafood sanctuary that defies its unassuming name. Nestled within the grand walls of an old bank building on Upper King, this downtown oyster bar sets the bar high with delicacies like stone crab claws and yellowfin tuna pâté. Elevate your dinner by indulging in a double—or perhaps even a triple—Shellfish Tower. The impressive centerpiece is partnered with gourmet garnishes like red wine mignonette and lemongrass cocktail sauce, and will undoubtedly mark your meal in style.

The Shanty | Cape Charles, VA (757) 695-3853, shantyseafood.com

The Shanty has established itself as the ultimate waterfront dining experience on the Eastern Shore since its inception in 2012. This treasured cottage-style eatery is situated on Mason Avenue and sa-

luted for its laid-back atmosphere, local oysters, and live tunes that fill the air. Also on deck: harborfront outdoor seating and dock space for convenience. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking sunset over the Chesapeake Bay while relishing in the jumbo lump crab cake sandwich with zesty Old Bay aioli. Other top treats include the velvety New England clam chowder and Caribbean-style tacos.

Striper Bites | Lewes, DE striperbites.com

Branded for being a relaxed, breezy bistro, Striper Bites captures the essence of salt life with its nautical-themed décor and charismatic crowd. Upon entering, soak in the sights of the wide plank wooden floors, array of maritime curiosities, and fish tanks perched above the festive bar. Once you’re settled, snag the Maine lobster roll, blackened tuna pasta, or the Nor’Easter—a succulent feast of butter-poached shrimp, scallops, and a broiled lump crab cake. Their span of sublime seafood is only outdone by the community-driven atmosphere that beautifully blends the dynamic spirit of the Northeast with the laidback charm of Key West.

INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS

120 | ideal-LIVING.com

Imagine waking to the sounds of tropical birds and howler monkeys with tropical breezes blowing through the trees, then taking a short walk to town to browse markets with fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, and more. Many ex-pats experience this every morning. Some choose to relocate to an even more luxurious lifestyle than they can experience in the United States. However, many choose to relocate to another country for affordability, climate, lifestyle, and, yes, even healthcare.

INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS

Mexico

The top destination for ex-pats is Mexico. An estimated 1.6 million Americans currently live in Mexico, and that number grows each year. People flock to the white sand beaches, warm weather, and a cost of living that is significantly lower than in the U.S. Mexico is known for its legendary easy living. Because of its affordability, many retirees have chosen to have a second home or move permanently. The Riviera Maya and Cabo San Lucas are two of the most popular areas along the 6,000+ miles of coastline. Direct flights to numerous destinations in Mexico make it easy to travel back and forth to see family and friends or to have them visit you.

Belize

As an English-speaking country where the U.S. dollar is widely accepted, Americans flock to this popular destination. Belize makes it easy for ex-pats to relocate there permanently with its Qualified Retirement Program. Belize has an overall lower cost of living than the U.S. The country may be small in acreage, but it has a vibrant culture with Creole, British, and Latino influences. Belize is located on the second-largest barrier reef system in the world and has a series of islands; the largest and most popular is Ambergris Caye with an established ex-pat community.

Costa Rica

One of the most popular destinations for Americans and Europeans alike, Costa Rica offers retirees a safe, affordable lifestyle with excellent quality health care. Costa Rica is no longer a "secret spot." It has been discovered by surfers, adventure travelers, and a lot of retirees. It's also known as a medical tourism destination. The people literally chose to save the rainforest, and now 25 percent of the land is protected from development. Costa Rica is one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet, with its rainforests, cloud forests, and beach areas. The quality of life in Costa Rica is best summed up in two words, "Pura Vida" or the pure life.

INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS

Panama

There's a lot more to Panama than a shipping canal. Panama City is a multicultural city with over 1.3 million people. Panama has high-tech cities, mountains, beaches, and much more. Wherever you go in Panama, you will discover a lower cost of living than in the United States. You'll also find quality health care that won't break the bank. It has some of the best healthcare in Latin America. Panama uses the U.S. dollar as currency, and the temperature is moderate. There are well-established ex-pat communities in Panama City, Boquete, and Coronado, where people have become accustomed to the slower lifestyle.

Ecuador

Along the equator, the sun rises and sets at approximately the same time all year, and temperatures do not vary much between summer and winter. Ecuador is known as the "Land of the Eternal Spring." The temperatures are cooler in the highlands in the Andes Mountains and a bit warmer in the beach communities. While the official language is Spanish, many people speak English. The Ecuadoran people are amicable and accommodating and use the U.S. dollar. Whether you want a metropolitan city like Quito, a mountain ex-pat oasis like Cuenca, or a beach locale, home prices and cost of living are more than affordable.

Greece

It's no secret that Greece is a popular vacation destination, but it's also a fast-growing location for ex-pats and retirees. For those seeking a luxury lifestyle, the coastal towns of Elounda and Agios Nikolaos on Crete could be your perfect destination.
