MATT BLACK FINISHES IN DEMAND FOR MODERN BATHROOMS
We’ve not seen such a focus on a specific colour since the avocado bathroom suites of the Seventies.
For decades, the majority of bathroom furniture has been white, complemented by brass or silver taps, screens and towel rails. It was a classic, timeless look, allowing homeowners to inject personality through paint choices and accessories.
However, the industrial trend of recent years has ushered in a new era of black fixtures and fittings, most commonly brassware, shower screens, enclosures and towel rails.
Black brings a touch of modernity to bathrooms, while still being neutral enough to match up with most aesthetics, which is no doubt why it has seen such a rise in popularity.
It’s also the perfect option for a relatively simple bathroom upgrade. Swapping existing chrome brassware for matt black dramatically changes the look and feel of a space, with minimal effort and cost.
Black brings a touch of modernity to the bathrooms, while still being neutral enough to match up with most aesthetics.
Andrew Cotterill, Category Manager Essential Electric Evo towel warmer in AnthraciteEssential Bathrooms facts:

• 2 shower ranges - Clever and Nine

FIVE REASONS TO GO WALL-HUNG
Architects and Designers are ever increasingly opting for wall-hung toilet and wall-hung furniture solutions when it comes to workplace, hotel, and residential design. We outline five reasons why you should go wall-hung.
Space saving & maximisation
Attached to the wall - resulting in zero contact with the floor, wall-hung bathroom ceramics and wall-hung furniture have concealed cisterns and installation frames hidden behind the wall resulting in a reduced outward projection. Streamlining the aesthetic of the bathroom as well as delivering acoustic benefits – by opting for a wall-hung solution you will eliminate the clutter of conventional toilets which take up floor area and create the illusion of a more spacious bathroom.
Hygiene
Unlike close-coupled and back-to-wall toilet options, wall-hung solutions expose a greater cleanable surface area as there is no cistern or exposed pipework leaving little space for germs or dust to accumulate. This makes wall-hung toilets the ideal choice.
1 2 3
Strength & durability
Geberit wall-hung toilet and furniture options are built to last. Contrary to popular belief, wall-hung solutions can withstand a weight of up to 400kg - which is the equivalent of a full grown polar bear. Once installed, Geberit wall-hung solutions have been cleverly designed for maintenance as the cistern can be easily accessed by simply removing the flush plate.
4 5
Aesthetic enhancement
If you are looking to create a sleek and sophisticated design, installing a wall-hung toilet or furniture will provide a modern yet functional bathroom solution. Wall-hung toilets come in a comprehensive range of styles from rounded to square – with options for every bathroom, no matter the size or budget.
Reduced sanitary sound
Opting for a wall-hung toilet solution is a good way to reduce sanitary sound in any washroom. Raising the toilet off the ground stops noise travelling directly from the toilet pan to the floor.

HYGIENE & ENERGY EFFICIENCY BOOST SMART TECH BATHROOMS
Smart tech is everywhere, on our bodies, on the roads and in our homes. Bathrooms are no exception, with a variety of exciting innovations making the smallest room in the home more connected to users than ever before.
Data from Allied Market Research showed the smart bathroom market was valued at $3.7 billion in 2020 and is expected to hit $10.8 billion by 2030.
The inclusion of smart bathroom tech in a renovation could be driven by the want for a more personalised shower experience and perhaps a more hygienic toilet experience. For many, though, it is the increased focus on hygiene over recent years that has pushed the demand for touchless brassware and mirrors, as well as shower toilets that clean with water.
Smart technology is increasingly changing the way we see and interact with the bathroom world.
Smart mirrors
Smart mirrors have been around for a while, but new models with increased interactivity are being launched consistently.
Tavistock Bathrooms offer a range of mirrors with a variety of functions, from heated options to avoid steaming up to models with infrared sensors, taking away the need for a switch, or to press a button, with wet hands. There is also the range of Resonate Mirror that have Bluetooth capability and an integrated speaker, so you can listen to your favourite tunes while you get ready. Some, like the Slide Mirror, also include USB charging points and shaving plugs.
Smart showers
Smart showers use electronics to control the temperature, rate of water flow and many other things, which can be chosen on a remote or your phone.
The new generation of smart showers, such as the Lumi and Evolve by Aqualisa, offer voice-activated technology, allowing you to tell your shower to turn on, without having to brave the cold.
The GROHE RainShower smart control shower system, offers customers a digital display and smart controlled push button to turn on and off. While the GROHTHERM SmartControl Thermostat includes the GROHE SafeStop safety button and SafeStop Plus temperature limiter to help create a seamless shower experience.
Toilets
Hygiene is top of everyone’s list of priorities, no more so than when it comes to bathroom matters, so the shower toilet is one piece of digital technology that really stands out as making a difference.
Geberit’s AquaClean shower toilet is one such model, which allows users to feel fresh and clean every time they use the toilet. At the touch of a button, a hidden spray arm extends to clean users with a jet of warm water, the temperature and intensity of which can be set according to preference.
Some models, including the Geberit Aquaclean Mera Comfort and Geberit Aquaclean Tuma Comfort, even offer a drying option with warm air, or a sensorcontrolled night-light to guide your way in the dark.
Touchless brassware
Another trend led by the increased focus on hygiene, particularly post-Covid, is touchless technology, allowing you to flush toilets and operate taps without needing to touch them.
GROHE offers several options using infrared technology to turn taps on without touching; this has been seen in the commercial space for some years, and it is now moving to the domestic market.
And for toilets, Geberit have a range of touchless operation flush plates, offering ultimate hygiene for homes as well as commercial premises without compromising on design. The Sigma10 which is available in seven colours including matt or gloss black, is tamper proof which means it is perfect for public washrooms.
Meanwhile, the Sigma80 is an award winning design made from high quality glass with a durable LED light available in five different colour options. The plate is available in both black and clear glass and can be connected via the Geberit Control app.
Smart technology is here to stay. It can already control our lights, heating and TVs, and anticipate what movies we would like to watch. Why shouldn’t it have a place in our bathroom too?

HOW TO SAVE ENERGY WITH GROHE
Tackle high energy costs with GROHE’s resource saving solutions for the bathroom.
Bathrooms are one of the most highresource consuming rooms, so implementing efficiency here is an ideal starting point when looking to reduce energy consumption.
GROHE offers water and energy saving technologies for both taps and showers making it possible to save on consumption without compromising on comfort and enjoyment.
Tap into cold-start technology
Sustainable and eco-friendly doesn’t mean having to compromise when it comes to bathroom design. Refined and refreshed for the demands of modern bathrooms, GROHE’s popular tap models Eurosmart, Bau, Essence, and Lineare have contemporary designs and high-spouts for user comfort. Hidden inside, GROHE technology provides energy saving aspects while delivering the best performance.
GROHE’s modern technology provides energy saving credentials in 3 ways:
• GROHE’s flow limiting technology, ‘EcoJoy’, reduces water flow by up to 50%.
• Innovative ‘Cold-start’ technology means only cold water will run when the tap’s lever is in middle position, helping to reduce using warm water unnecessarily.
• With thermostatic showering technology, GROHE prevents water wastage through precise temperature control
Equipped with innovative ‘Cold-start’ technology, the taps help to reduce energy usage by dispensing warm water when the lever is pushed left beyond the middle position, helping to make running warm water a more conscious decision when really needed.
Alongside GROHE’s cold-start technology, the tap models also include GROHE’s EcoJoy technology which further supports reducing consumption. GROHE Ecojoy provides a reduced water flow, with up to 50% less water use, providing users with the added bonus of saving on water, alongside energy.
Sustainable shower solutions
Innovative thermostatic shower mixers such as the Grohtherm 1000 Performance thermostat deliver ultimate showering comforts while helping users to save water and energy.
With skyrocketing energy prices and sustainability being on everyone’s mind, saving resources is more important than ever. GROHE offers affordable products for a sustainable lifestyle, saving water and energy without compromising on performance.
GROHE Grohtherm 1000 Performance Thermostat
With advanced thermostatic technology, GROHE’s thermostatic bar mixers provides precise temperature control and corrects temperature fluctuations within a fraction of a second, meaning water wastage through running the shower while adjusting the temperature is a thing of the past.
Models like the Grohtherm 1000 Performance mixer also comes packed with GROHE’s flow reducing technology, EcoJoy, and an EcoButton which users can use to efficiently switch between the eco-flow or full-flow depending on preference and need. Pairing thermostatic mixers with water-saving showerheads can deliver the best in sustainable showering. GROHE’s Tempesta 250 shower head features GROHE’s flow-restricting technology, EcoJoy, which helps to save water without impacting performance.
Sustainability at GROHE
As a global leader in premium bathroom fittings, with sustainability as a core value, GROHE has made a number of sustainable achievements and initiatives. Most recently in 2021, GROHE reached a 38.7% reduction in water consumption across production, exceeding its own target of 20%. GROHE also succeeded in reducing their plastic packaging and became plastic free as of January 2022.
Since 2019, GROHE has been utilising green electricity and also has been investing in solar technology, combined heat and power plants and innovative manufacturing processes to further support in saving resources. As a result, GROHE is proud to have achieved carbon neutral production across their international production sites and has been able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by around 40% since 2014, while at the same time increasing its energy efficiency by 24%.

GROHE’s Tempesta 250 Shower HeadOUR NEW HOME IN MILTON KEYNES
It’s been a year since we moved into our new purpose-built facility where we’ve been working hard to streamline our operations and better serve our customers. Now we’re settled, we are delighted to share the benefits to you of this move.
Following our move in the north in April 2022, we moved all of our stock, consolidating our 3 southern warehouses into one 108,000sq ft space, as well as relocating over 200 staff into our new Southern distribution centre in Milton Keynes.
Our move has been made with our customers in mind. We wanted to provide them with a more tailored proposition and better service levels. Our increased warehouse capacity means we can now offer more products for next day delivery, as well as a wider range of stock. Customers will benefit from shorter lead times and a larger selection of fast-moving lines. All in all, our move to Milton Keynes is sure to make a positive difference to our customers.
I have met new people within the business, which helps when needing to solve queries from customers with different teams. It enables us to service our customers better by working more closely together.
Lucy, Customer Service AssistantOur next day delivery service is extremely popular with our customers, therefore the additional space means that we are more equipped to fulfil this service promise.
Stewart Perry, Head of Digital & MarketingOur new site now has 10 HGV docking ports, three of which can handle both HGV deliveries from our suppliers and our fleet of 56 vans. This has increased the efficiency of loading and unloading stock, which is especially important for our next day delivery service - a service that many of our customers rely on.
Additionally, our fleet has been upgraded to feature eco-vans. These vans have been carefully chosen to help us keep our service promise by emitting lower levels of emissions, having specialised storage to minimize damage, and utilizing technology to reduce roadside breakdowns. We hope that our investment in these vans will bring us many advantages in the future.
Sustainability and employee wellbeing has also been at the forefront when developing the site over the past 12 months. To ensure a healthy and productive work environment, the site features various breakout areas, a rooftop garden, exercise equipment and reflection areas.
The site is more eco-friendly, with 14 electric vehicle charging points available for both staff and visitors to use. We’ve also taken steps to reduce our carbon footprint by creating green spaces around the site, providing a pleasant environment for our teams to enjoy.
One key benefit of the site, is that all staff are now in one building, resulting in increased collaboration between teams. Customer Service Assistant, Lucy, explains: “I have met new people within the business since being at the new site, which helps when needing to solve queries from customers with different teams. It enables us to service our customers better by working more closely together.”
Head of Digital & Marketing, Stewart perry said: “Our vision for the new site was to ensure that we could increase our service proposition to our customers and deliver an increased amount of products on a next day basis. Our next day delivery service is extremely popular with our customers, therefore the additional space means that we are more equipped to fulfil this service promise.”

Versatile furniture ranges to complete a stylish bathroom look.
Aleyda: a modern and flexible new bathroom furniture range from Roca
Elevate your bathroom with the latest furniture collection from Roca. Designed for modern-day living, Aleyda is a contemporary range of furniture featuring integrated handles for a sleek finish.
Just as bathrooms come in all shapes and sizes, so do Aleyda vanity units, ranging from 500mm to 1200mm wide and also available with standard 480mm and compact 380mm depths. The two and four-drawer models are wall-hung, helping to create a minimalist aesthetic (as well as the illusion of more space if you have a bijou bathroom). The three and six-drawer units feature legs for a more traditional, floor-standing look.
Each piece in the Aleyda collection is wrapped with PVC foil for an added layer of waterproofing. Finishes include timeless options such as Pebble Grey, Matt White and Matt Black, as well as the softer spa-like finishes Beige Wood and White Wood.
Behind the stylish fronts you’ll find drawer organisers to maximise storage and keep bathroom essentials close to hand. All configurations pair perfectly with Roca’s Cala brassware to complete the stylish look. Matching column units are also available as part of the Extra range from Roca.

Tenet: a new affordable bathroom furniture collection
Why sacrifice style for an affordable price tag? With the new Tenet collection by Roca, you can have both. Compatible with pieces from Roca’s other ranges and designed to suit bathrooms of all sizes and styles, the new collection of handleless vanity units both simple in style and flexible in use.
Natalie Bird, Brand Manager for Roca, reveals the reason why Tenet is a welcome addition to the Roca family.
Tenet vanity units come in a choice of five glossy and wood finishes. “Pick a glossy finish in white or grey to catch and reflect light, making your bathroom feel roomier,” says Natalie. Alternatively, choose between three wood-effect finishes: Nordic Ash, City Oak and Walnut. “A wood look never fails to create an inviting contrast to all the shiny surfaces that come as standard in the bathroom,” Natalie adds.
Versatile design
The Tenet vanity unit is 460mm deep and comes in a variety of widths to suit different storage needs. Sizes range from 600mm to 1200mm, with two, three, four or six drawers complete with built-in organisers to keep all your toiletries tidy yet close to hand. There’s also the option to have two doors instead of drawers – a convenient way to store taller bottles upright.
Those wanting to boost the feeling of openness should choose a wall-hung Tenet vanity as exposing more of the floor gives the illusion of a bigger bathroom. What’s more, freeing up floorspace makes cleaning easier too.
If you prefer the look of a floor-standing unit, need extra storage space or your plumbing lends itself better to this style, the Tenet collection includes a three-drawer option that is sold with legs.
“The beauty of a handleless design is that you can choose any finish for your brassware without the worry that it doesn’t match the handles on your vanity,” says Natalie. To complete the look, complementing column- and wall-unit storage solutions are also available in Roca’s Extra range, giving you the option of a coordinated suite.

DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY: IDEAL STANDARD’S I.LIFE B
i.life B is Ideal Standard’s newest addition to the i.life family.
Following in the footsteps of I.life A & S, the new i.life B range was created in collaboration with renowned Italian design studio, Palomba Serafini Associati (PS+A) and features a collection of basins, WCs and furniture – all showcasing a minimalistic and contemporary aesthetic that PS+A has also curated across Ideal Standard’s other collections.
A diverse collection
i.life B has a contemporary minimalism which is softened by gentle curves and flowing lines. This design aesthetic is reflected through the range with ceramics available in a variety of sizes and options, helping this collection to be a universal solution for homeowners and developers alike.
The range includes washbasins in widths of 50cm, 55cm, 60cm, a 45cm hand-rinse basin, all of which can be used with a full or semipedestal or wall mounted with bottle trap. A semi-countertop basin 55cm wide is also included.
Vanity basins are also part of the range in widths of 61cm, 81cm, 101cm and 121cm, the latter being a double bowl model. Combining with the dedicated design-led furniture gives end-users a great way to gain valuable storage and make use of limited floor space. The wall-hung vanity units are offered in a choice of heights with one or two drawer options allowing end-users to configure their storage space to suit their needs and the 120cm unit has four drawers.
i.life B furniture is available in the seven finishes offered across i.life A & S. These include matt white, greige matt, quartz grey matt, sand beige matt, carbon grey matt, natural oak and coffee oak, offering a huge amount of flexibility for creating the ideal bathroom as furniture can be mixed and matched across the collections.
Two different handle colour options are also offered, with Brushed Chrome and Black Matt helping add a touch of prestige to a room, while the soft close feature gives a feel of quiet luxury.
i.life B washbasin and full pedestal with Ceraplan single lever basin mixer i.life B 120cm vanity basin & unit with 2 drawers in Coffee Oak with Matt Black handles Coffee OakIn addition to the basin and furniture offering, several complementary WCs, in both wall-mounted and floor-standing versions, round out i.life B. All WCs also benefit from Rimls+ flushing and a choice of wrap or slim style soft-close seats for a more premium and less disruptive experience while quick release technology makes them easy to remove if needed.
Expanding the offering
i.life B’s offering is being enhanced with three new vessel basins, 60cm and 40cm rectangular basins and a circular 40cm vessel basin, all of which will be available in a traditional gloss white.
Also being introduced into the range are new worktops and open side units, all maintaining the impressive colour palette of i.life’s wider furniture offering. The worktops will be available in widths from 60cm to 200cm, perfectly supporting the vessel basins and providing a solution for spaces of all sizes.
Open side units are 40 cm wide, available in two heights and one and two shelf options. Combining with the i.life B vanity units, they can be used adjacent to vanity basins or with worktops and vessel basins, making it simple and convenient for end users to incorporate stylish storage into their bathroom.
Products from across i.life B can also be easily combined with solutions from Ideal Standard’s i.life A and i.life S offering, letting customers mix and match products that are built to work together. They can, of course, be combined with i.life’s bathing and showering offering for cohesive styling across the entire bathroom.
Coming soon...Gloss Grey Ceramics
Further building on the collection, the next exciting addition is a new sleek gloss grey ceramic finish on selected models of i.life B. Launching in April, the stunning finish extends the collection’s considerable offering and provides an alternative colour for customers to choose from.
Gloss grey will be available in i.life B 60cm and 80cm vanity basins as well as a close coupled WC and both back to wall and wall hung WCs and bidets. This new colour integrates seamlessly with the quartz grey matt furniture finish and lets users customise their bathrooms further, following the growing popularity of grey across interior design.
Taking advantage of technology
Like the majority of Ideal Standard collections, the i.life B range, and entire i.life collection benefit from innovative technology, such as RimLS+ flushing which is offered on all i.life WCs. RimLS+ ensures the entire bowl is cleaned with every flush, and with nowhere for bacteria to hide. Splash-free and easier to clean, RimLS+ is the go-to solution for busy bathrooms. It’s water-efficient functionality also helps to support a reduction in consumption for end-users and helps projects to meet stringent sustainability demands.
Installation is easier than ever too with Ideal Standard’s new EasyFix+® system. This innovative hidden fixation system makes installation of wall mounted pans fast, easy, and safe. It allows a one-man installation and invisible fixings make it a dream for those aiming to achieve the perfect aesthetic. For more information about the full i.life range, visit idealbathrooms.com or

Area Sales Manager picks
James Manuel, South Central Area Sales ManagerI’ve found, in the last 12 months, that showrooms are going for greens and natural finishes when it comes to furniture colours and styles. It’s a trend that seems to be really taking off for 2023. I think customers are starting to want more colour and individuality within their bathrooms, and showrooms are needing to accommodate for that. Collections such as Roca Ona, Essential Montana and VitrA Root –have a great selection of furniture colours and designs which are really modern and perfect for this years trends.
Coloured brassware is also taking off, I’m seeing a lot of brushed brass, gold and black in showrooms compared to the more traditional chrome. Again, I think it gives the customer a chance to personalise their space – switching out small things as simple as a basin mixer in a different colour can really change the entire bathroom. With most

IN FOCUS... HALLAM INTERIORS
Based in Nottingham, Hallam Interiors specialises in the design and installation of luxury living spaces, from bespoke bathrooms to custom-built spa rooms. We spoke to owner Shay Hallam about his biggest influences, trends to look out for and what the future holds for Hallam Interiors.
Q. Let’s go back to the start…how and when did you get into the bathroom industry?
I started fitting bathrooms over 10 years ago for various companies, starting out my journey doing joinery and plumbing, before moving into the more niche, high-end bathrooms.
Q. What are your biggest influences throughout your time in the bathroom industry?
I take inspiration from those far-out ideas and what the future has got for the industry. I thought if I was going to do it, I wanted to go for more of the glitz and glam, the over-the-top style.
Q. What would you say are the ingredients for a successful bathroom showroom?
Large format tiles are a big thing for us now. The smallest tile we have in our showroom is a metre by metre. They’re all really big formats and just have that wow factor. I think another key ingredient is to go a bit above and beyond for customers and make sure they have a statement piece or a statement wall which really makes all the difference.
Q. Looking back over the past 5 - 10 years, what was the most challenging thing you have dealt with and what did you take on board from it?
To be honest, how we’ve built our business is by learning a lot from companies that we’ve worked for in the past. Taking all the things that we used to scratch our heads over but not being in a position to actually change anything because it wasn’t our business.
The most challenging part of my journey so far was the transition to a larger space. We started out in a small 600 square foot yard and had to jump to a much bigger premises. It was a big move, but we had a clear plan of where we wanted to be in the next 5-10 years. Now, with 4,500 square feet, it was definitely a daunting task that we successfully accomplished.
Q. Over the years, what has been your favourite bathroom trend and why?
Colours. Gold is very in right now whereas before, it was very much everything was chrome. Colours are starting to come in now and it makes the bathrooms look stunning. Every bathroom looks a bit different. Obviously black is very in at the minute, but gold is next. We’ve spent quite a lot of time, effort and money to make sure that if a customer wants to go for the gold, everything can be gold. It’s quite hard to de-chrome a room as everything just comes in chrome as standard, so these new trends that are coming in with adding a bit of colour can look really nice.

Q. What industry trends do you see increasing over the next 12 months?
Brand new brochures are coming out now and we are seeing colours again – your sinks and your toilets are now starting to come in colours, not like the old avocado, it’s mainly black.
In our showroom we have a pink bathroom suite, we have pink furniture. We’ve got a brown sink with green furniture and when you say it, you think that’s horrendous, but it looks stunning. People are starting to get the opportunity to be a bit more adventurous with colour and if it’s done right, it looks really good.
Q. Have you noticed customer habits changing when looking at their bathroom design in recent years?
Storage is a massive one. I find the one thing that customers keep saying is ‘we need more storage’ More customers are wanting everything hidden. They would rather have a full wall stood off and have toilet frames hidden in the wall, as it’s a bit more elegant and an airy design. That’s what we specialise in.
Q. If you could name one thing you’re proud of, what would it be?
In March, we opened our showroom to the public for the first time. It is literally a brand-new build. Our old showroom was just a small unit and we did appointments there. Because of how quickly and how big the company is growing, we knew we needed a bigger space. It took us a while to get it to this stage, just because of the size of the building and the amount of work that had to go into it was quite daunting.
