Dear Friends, Colleagues and Partners, I am finally writing to you with a better perspective before me and with the strong hope that better times are coming. In the last few months, the situation in the exhibition industry has been improving in many areas of the world: in Europe, live exhibitions and congresses are taking place with the growing enthusiasm of exhibitors and visitors, bringing good results in terms of numbers. Asia Pacific is also starting finally by easing travel restrictions: an important signal came last weekend from the Singapore Government allowing trips to Europe, North America and other countries within Asia for vaccinated passengers. These aspects give us hope to be almost out of the pandemic period (even if a complete recovery for the whole world is difficult to predict). But let’s keep on looking on the positive side and appreciate the fact that UFI decided to organise the annual congress live at the beginning of November in Rotterdam. In addition to the importance of being the first post-pandemic global live congress of our industry, during the event we’ll be able to receive and share information about our industry perspectives over the next few years. We will learn about new forecasted trends for show structures (hybrid towards physical), how the industry aims to continue the dialogue with governments and international bodies in order to bring attention to our industry and the need of the whole supply chain for help and financing for the restart of activity in the New Now.
}
It will be interesting to see how governments and consequently organisers will direct their efforts to move forward in an increasingly sustainable future in the event industry. IELA cannot but look favorably at the “Net Zero Carbon Events” initiative, connected to programmes like the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Guidelines (UNSDGs) and directly related to the event industry. We will concentrate all our efforts into making it possible for our members to participate and to make our voice heard. Last but not least, I think the Net Zero Carbon emission, the programme that UFI and other associations are trying to develop, are the ones we need to focus on in the future. The IELA Board also intends to continue to support our whole membership throughout the next year with different initiatives. One of these initiatives you have probably realized from the recently launched survey is that we are planning to restart training in person. If this is not possible, we will focus on new formats which can help members to train and re-train their staff and also attract new talents to our family. Our Education WG Team is working hard on this. Challenging times are expected ahead but our resilience and passion will definitely make it possible for us to adapt and bring us together in person for a great Networking restart celebration at our 2022 Congress, wherever we might finally be organising it. t

Dear Hans, you have been a pioneer of IELA. You left a great void that we will try to fill by committing ourselves every day to the growth of our Association. Thank you for your endless dedication. Guido Fornelli

“
What can one say about Hans? He was a true gentleman, statesman, IELA ambassador. In fact he was “Mr. IELA”. He was a true mentor to me and many others in our industry. He is sorely missed, but we will continue his legacy in the years to come. Sandi Trotter IELA Vice-Chairperson

ELA lost a visionary and creative pioneer of the Association, and all of us have lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Hansruedi have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Hans-R. leaves behind an Association that only he together with other founders already gone could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of IELA.
At the end of June 2021, during the session entitled LEGENDS OF IELA and taking place within the IELA 36th annual congress, we paid tribute to the founding fathers, and especially to Hansruedi. We were sad that he could not attend the online event, but
”
we were happy to be able to remember the beginnings of the association he founded, with his dedication, his passion and all his heart. We were proud to explain to the new members about our visionary Hans-R. and how he made it possible that 36 years later, his dream brings together 165 companies located in 56 countries. Hansruedi will remain forever in our hearts. No words can adequately express our sadness at Hansruedi’s death. We will honour his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.
Thank you, Dear Hansruedi. Rest in peace. Your IELA Family. t

HANSRUEDI’S WORDS WHEN BEING INTERVIEWED FOR THE SPECIAL EDITION OF THE MAGAZINE ABOUT THE 35 TH ANNIVERSARY OF IELA, LAST SPRING 2020
“
We had high expectations but nothing comparing to today’s reality. IELA’s current success was unimaginable as it reaches far beyond expectations!
”
Here are more of the memories he shared with us all:
DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME YOU EVER MENTIONED IELA AND WHAT IT STOOD FOR? HOW WAS THIS INITIATIVE CREATED?
“
During the late seventies,I discovered that we could become a site agent at the Palexpo Geneva site. Steve Barry of Three Way (later TWI) was looking for a local partner to handle the Telecom shows and that was the beginning of our relationship! The international moving industry, in which I was active until then, was represented by associations which promoted its members in a worldwide network of top class companies. The idea was born to create an association for the international exhibition logistics industry.
“I still remember the first edition of the IELA magazine, on October 1985, when at this time it was called the “IELA DIARY”. Hans-R. Brauchli
Between 1979 and 1983, various informal meetings took place mainly between Steve Barry, who liked the idea, and myself to develop a concept for a meeting and exchange platform for companies active in the international Exhibition Transport and Service Industry. On June 12th 1984, a special meeting took place to decide on the name of this association: it was confirmed as “IELA International Exhibition Logistics Associates”. When thinking back to the origins of
IELA, I always have a special thought for the 3 founding members who have left us already - Steve Barry, Ernie Droessaert and Klaus Rauch. I remember how honoured I felt to be able to join them and make IELA what it is today. We shared a lot of memorable moments together over the years. One thing I will never forget is meeting regularly in Paris and Ernie introduced us to the best restaurants in town!
”
DO YOU REMEMBER THE DAY WHEN IELA WAS CREATED? YOU SURELY HAVE MORE THAN ONE ANECDOTE ABOUT MARCH 6th 1985. CAN YOU SHARE ONE WITH US?
“
March 6th 1985 was the day the association came to life and the dream came true. After dedicating so much time, volunteer work, compiling correspondence, etc., we finally created an official structure. Without exaggerating, I was very excited. Once the association was founded, we had functions. Ruth Meister likes to remember the first time she sat there writing the minutes. She had never done this before but she jumped into the job. In one year, the total number of members had passed to 20 and we were all thrilled to be meeting market leaders under the same roof working in the same industry worldwide.

ansruedi and I met in 1958 in London. We got married in 1962 and were proud parents of 3 sons and a daughter. Unfortunately, one of our twins passed away in 2014. That was certainly the most difficult moment in Hansruedi’s life.
When our children were small, they didn’t see much of their father. He left for work early in the morning and came home most of the time when the children were already in bed. I suppose that was the case of most of the people who worked in the moving industry, but he was nevertheless a wonderful father to them. He also was a very dear grandfather to our 10 grandchildren! It’s actually after having attended some FIDI and (SETI) OMNI conventions (global alliance of quality-certified international moving and relocation companies), he had the idea of creating an analogue global network in the exhibition industry. As you know, it started back in 1979, when Steve Barry and Hansruedi started discussing the possibility of creating a platform where companies active in the exhibition freight forwarding business could meet. Many meetings took place between the two men and later, in 1983 a first official meeting attended by Steve Barry, Ernest Droessaert, David J. Gardner, Klaus Rauch, Peter Kuoni and Hansruedi took place in Geneva to study the possibility to 22

set up a legal organisation for those companies involved in the International Exhibition Transport and Service Industry. On March 6th 1985, IELA was born in Geneva. Hansruedi was also very much involved in our city. He was for a very long time president of the «Association des Habitants» and was active until the end of his life. There was a wonderful «homage» to him in our newspaper - and he deserved it! I for myself, have been very fortunate in many ways during the many decades we were together and the wonderful memories help me to overcome the big loss now. I could attend most of the conferences of IELA and Hansruedi and I met many wonderful people from all over the world and some of them became true friends! What is more precious in the world? You can read on a headstone in Ireland: « Death leaves a heartache no one can heal – Love leaves a memory no one can steal! I would like to thank all our friends at IELA from all over the world for the wonderful friendship and I wish everybody good luck and hope that business will very soon become normal again after this long pandemic period!
Love, Alice

The IELA Seniors Club also owes a lot to Hans. Without the farsightedness and commitment of Hans, the club would not exist today. His founding of the club is another example of his visionary thinking. The Seniors Club continues to live in his spirit.

“M
y first encounter with Hansruedi was in 1985 when he employed me at Inter Transport. Little by little, Hansruedi transmitted to me the exhibition virus and the IELA family spirit. When Inter ExpoLogistics was founded in 2000, he took pleasure in reminding me that when I started to work with him in 1985, I didn’t want to work in exhibitions. Hansruedi was more than a director at Inter Transport or business partner at IEL. He was first a friend with whom we could talk about everything. He was a visionary, hard worker but he was also always up for a good time.

hen I first met Hansruedi, it was in the late 90’s when we were both board members of the Geneva Freight Forwarders Association. At that time, Hans was representing Inter Transport and I was employed by Sauvin Schmidt. In 2004, four years after he founded IEL (Inter ExpoLogistics) together with Roberto (and other partners), he suggested that I could take over his position before his final retirement. Done! This was the beginning of a fruitful collaboration. Working with Hans face-to-face has been an amazing experience. I learned a lot, including not acting precipitously in front of a problem. Hans enforced high demands from his colleagues but in the same time he was also highly demanding of himself. He was able to be in the office very early in the morning and leave very late at night, but something he could hardly miss was a turbo nap after lunchtime. An insatiable worker, a man of wisdom, Hans was also full of humour and friendly. He was my mentor, my advisor, my teacher, my guide, my friend…

How to plan on-site logistics for a Sports Event £ Is there is an official appointed
freight forwarder for the event?
£ Are there truck mobility restrictions
on specific days in the area of the event?
£ Venue Inspection – some venues are
very tricky to arrange the deliveries and pick-ups, very well trained manpower is needed
£ What equipment can you use- fuel
or electric-driven equipment? £ Where can you leave your tanks
£ Have you identified the specificity/
complexity of the delivery for this specific event? (Each event is totally different) Ask yourself the following: £ Verify if you need to bring your own forklift with authorised driver, crane, side loader etc. £ Does the forklift have to be
registered and require a registered number plate due to being driven on a street/in the City during build-up and breakdown?
to re-fuel your forklifts? You might have to apply for permission from the authorities or city responsible £ Is the staff fully equipped with safety
jacket, helmets and safety shoes? £ Check the access. Most of the
Sports Event Venues only let you enter with your shipment if you have booked a time slot and registered your vehicle/shipment, in some cases also the driver (name, passport etc.) £ Communicate with the organiser

“Formula 1 delivery is mind-blowing. In my 35-years of experience in exhibition and event logistics and after being involved in the Indian Cricket Premium League, the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics, I would say my main challenge was Formula 1 in India (from 2011 to 2013), handling six back-to-back 747 charters, three 747
charters of communication equipment, 40 containers coming in and out, continuously, during one week. “Contrary to events like Formula 1 or E where you have the teams and the organiser, during the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, we had to deal with the committees, hundreds of people asking for their shipments with completely different delivery locations, specific delivery timeframe and equipment in each location. The variety of items shipped, from boats to food, is also a particular challenge. There is no specific association for big sports event logistics. Some events take place once in a lifetime. For us it is more comfortable to
work with IELA Agents because we rely on our agents”. “When you are interested in participating in a bid for a big event, you have to connect with a group of companies that are established in most countries. It is important to think globally”. “The session confirmed the necessity for an institutional exchange so that organisers know our network exists and that we can do the job in a very secure and safe manner as we are experts in handling and transporting sensitive cargo”. t

he roar of the engines, the energetic crackle before kickoff and the tense anticipation of the audience before the start: a major sporting event is an experience that can’t be compared to anything else. As the pandemic comes to an eagerly awaited end, the longing for the excitement and the passion that such an event inspires also returns. As part of the audience, you can fully embrace these feelings because there is a “well-oiled machine” working in the background. A crucial factor here is logistics, which ensures that everything is in the right place at the right time. Sports logistics is a fascinating and challenging field of work for freight forwarders. Along with the special atmosphere of these events, much of this fascination

has to do with the highly complex tasks involved. Every sport comes with its own individual peculiarities. High-precision machines such as sports cars and racing cars require special care. But every other piece of sports equipment also needs to be ready for use at exactly the right time. There is no room for error, especially because preparation for the next event begins much earlier than the previous one ends. During a season, packing and transportation literally takes place directly after the event has finished. For any cross-border transport, customs formalities must be meticulously prepared to avoid delays. But individual security concepts for major events also cannot be disregarded. Careful planning is absolutely essential. Alexandra Erdmann

Together with a worldwide network of internationally operating partner companies, we ensure that every event gets to the starting line and over the finish. Many different customers for sporting events rely on our expertise to complete even the most demanding tasks reliably and on time. ports logistics are a different ball game in many ways. But then in more ways than one they are a combination of all the other ball games in our trade.
Sports logistics is very time sensitive, like our exhibitions. They are extremely product sensitive in terms of the value of artworks and events. In many ways they have the glamour of all the other logistics put together. Sport logistics is also no longer limited to mega activities like the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games or regional-wise. They have become a global phenomenon. If you see the activities now like cricket, the IPL, the EPL, the regional competitions, tennis, you name it! You have to be good at handling sports logistics from a global aspect and not just limited to a few countries. •••••

Orphee Beinoglou SA was established in 1923. Figuring among the first official moving & transport companies in Greece, we have maintained the same philosophy in our journey over 98 years, namely high quality in our services, taking care of our employees and meeting our clients’ needs to the highest level of expectations. For more than 30 years we have been involved in many sporting events such as The Olympic Games Athens 2004, Rally Acropolis, various international events and of course, the Athens Marathon. Every event is different and every client has differing needs. The achievement for our company is that we deliver on time and accurately every time. CHALLENGES Athens city centre where the Marathon takes place is a very difficult area to access. The needs of the organiser are significant, therefore the volume that must be delivered there is substantial. Through our domestic and international departments, everything is collected in our warehouses in Athens and transported from there to the city centre. Transportation and collection of goods is monitored by one department. Colleagues are then on-site in cooperation with the organiser who indicates where we can unload the goods. The cargo has to be delivered and placed on-site by 05:00 at the latest that same day. The reason for this is the traffic. The city centre cannot be closed for more than 24 hours. SEMI-MARATHON Athens Semi-Marathon is one of the most popular, significant and wellknown running events in Greece. It is organised by SEGAS and took place last September 12th 2021. Orphee Beinoglou SA has been an official supporter of the Athens Semi-Marathon for many years now. Supporting the sense of community and witnessing people testing their limits are factors which motivate us to get involved. From a technical point of view, more than 40 staff members from Athens employed 20 trucks (max. 3.5 tons) plus 10 big-sized trucks from our own fleet to transfer all medical equipment, the area protective rails which mark the event route and all beverages for the runners. Thanks to our staff’s experience and special knowledge, Orphee Beinoglou SA managed the project with great success and efficiency. ATHENS MARATHON

he Tokyo Olympics 2020 and Tokyo Paralympics 2020 have ended successfully under coronavirus infection.Regarding transportation for the Olympics/ Paralympics, even if deliveries are possible to the venue independently, the work inside the venue was the official sponsor Yamato Transport Co., Ltd., a designated contractor. Certain shippers from overseas were planning to have their own carriers complete the import procedure in Japan and then bring them to the International Broadcast Center, the IBC located at Tokyo Big Sight as our home ground. We received an on-site work request from one National Broadcaster in the EU. They applied for our Accreditation cards to enter all the Olympic venues and facilities. We received 10 personal passes then we worked with a total of 157 persons during the preparation period, the session and the removal period. In the range of work carried out, the arrivals are more important for the client than transportation to the venue.
In normal transportation operations, the transportation company in the home country secures the right of interest, but our company which has a lot of experience in the most important on-site work, is highly evaluated and makes sure things run smoothly. t

The congress format encouraged free movement between flows throughout the day and addressed the ever-growing challenge of being online during the period of the pandemic: THINK, BREAKFAST BRAINS, STREAM and now WORK LAB and THE EXTRA-MILE areas. This year’s concept took a step further with JOY-EMPOWER and THRIVE to energize delegates during the breaks, using interlude design to help members to remain connected, focussed and fresh although in front of a screen several hours per day.

As to the focus of the event, Elizabeth Niehaus, IELA Executive Officer explains “Why is it A BEGINNERS MIND? We need to shift our “old” perspective and open our minds, allowing ourselves to identify new territories with curiosity and open hearts. In this spirit, the online format gives our members areas and topics to explore in order to gain insights, obtain foresight and learn how to adjust course and reshape our future”.
IELA Chairperson Guido confirms: “A Beginner’s Mind is the only state of mind we need in order to face the NEW NOW. This means that we have to adapt and be more efficient. This Congress will look at new and disruptive actions to help us to reshape our future with the professional ethos of continuous improvement and life-long learning. In this spirit, this Congress will accompany all IELA members in building new outlooks, new paths to re-invent ourselves, thus harnessing new business opportunities”.
Sandi Trotter, IELA Vice Chair & 36th Congress MC adds: “The last 18 months have been a time of learning and a time to focus on the strength of our companies and our association. As we get back to business, it has never been more important to be an IELA member and benefit from all IELA has to offer. This IELA Congress is a MUST-ATTEND-EVENT, 100% funded by the association. The coming months will be tough, we still have a lot of hard work to do, but together, united, we can and will succeed”.

THINK (crosstraining THE FUTURE) GIPR: Key Insights of an Industry in Transformation Sonia Thomas (jwc GmbH, Senior Consultant) introduced the Global Industry Performance Review 2021, explaining inter alia the evolution of business models in our industry.
Covid-19 has been the most asymmetric crisis across sectors so far, with high-contact sectors being hit hardest.
The global exhibition market has shrunk by an estimated 73% in space in 2020. Europe remains the biggest market with an overall share of 39%. SONIA THOMAS
The global exhibition market has generated an estimated 12 billion euros of revenue in 2020 – an unprecedented drop of 68% from pre-pandemic levels (2019 = 38,2 billion euros).
The countries fuelling the exhibition industry’s growth over the past decade are also those expected to recover the quickest.
Omnichannel integration allows an event community to maintain engagement 365 days a year with a continuous platform offering punctual live happenings.
THINK like an Explorer Our Keynote Cathy O’Dowd was the first woman in the world to climb the world’s highest mountain from both its north and south sides. With the IELA audience Cathy shared the insights she has discovered about herself and about individuals and teams under intense stress in the face of overwhelming challenge.
CATHY O’DOWD
42
Cathy surprised us by saying that “Failure can be an option”. Cathy is the first woman in the world to climb the world’s highest mountain from both its north and south sides, , climbing the Mozeno ridge of Nanga Parbat, the longest unclimbed ridge in the high Himalaya. She shared her insights when under intense stress with overwhelming challenges and explained the dilemma of making decisions.
An interesting thought is how to overcome unexplored challenges as a diverse team. Globally speaking, Cathy told us her success story but outlined how their plan sometimes failed. She accentuated that sometimes failure is the best option: “Once you try to execute your plan, you might need to let the plan go and come up with a new one”. Although a team can be excellently selected and diverse, problems occur by not investing enough time in integrating diversity into decision-making, by having insufficient communication and by not being willing to change plans.

THINK (crosstraining THE FUTURE) ANTICIPATION: Foresight works ANTICIPATION
Anticipation has been indeed the wellspring of the exhibition & event industry since day 0: The pandemic has disrupted our world radically and it is time to go back to our roots and re-think the experience of anticipation itself and start again. THERE ARE SEVERAL FUTURES AND WE NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR THE DIFFERENT SCENARIOS
“Anticipation matters because it changes the present. It is not what we do today that influences the future, it is how we look at the future that influences today”. LOES DAMHOFF The Futures Literacy Expert
“We need to listen deeply to our customers and build models and products that meet what they want, rather than design a product and work on how to respectively fit it to our customers”.
“To diversify the future means to imagine multiple futures, using them to project ourselves from the present. We use the future all the time - it’s called anticipation. Future does not exist and never will. It is always later than now, the next hour, next week, next year. No one has ever been there and there is no data available. All we can do is extrapolate our knowledge from the past and the present to the future. But it does not mean that we know what is coming. It has a profound impact on how we think, act and behave in the present”. LOES DAMHOFF

IELA is committed to increasing awareness, to gender equity, and inclusion. The Power Up Programme will be the central spiral in developing several actions for more gender equity and inclusion within the exhibition logistics industry. The task force has been investigating the efforts of other organisations both within and

About POWER UP: In March 2019, IELA announced the launch of the IELA “Power Up” Campaign, to celebrate, support and encourage Women’s Leadership in the Exhibition & Event Logistics Industry. This programme has 3 pillars for action: INSPIRE, IGNITE and MENTOR. We are happy to relaunch it again this year as we at IELA take this subject seriously and want to play a key role in supporting young women to develop their power to succeed in our industry. We will enable all efforts once again in our “Power UP” programme to create positive energy and boost ambition.

We are Alive! The Return, the Restart, the New Beginning…
D
o you remember that mix of feelings before the first date - the excitement, the suspense, the fast beating of your heart, the dry mouth? That’s everything I felt when I entered the exhibition hall for the first time after more than 1,5 years without events. Having cleaned the dust from my gear, I was properly equipped with my helmet, my vest, my gloves, my boots, the most modern safety accessory, the mask. I stepped into the hall with my right foot in order to give me luck on my return to my world. The world of exhibition halls, docks, organised chaos, a temple of adrenaline. As well as being full of happiness, I could not avoid the sadness thinking about the ones we lost 50
IELA}}REPORT96
and for the companies which did not make it. I realised that luck has been with me all this time: my partner and husband Claudio and I, together with Fulstandig, survived and are ready to get back. Even wearing masks, all human beings in the hall were smiling at each other. Relief and joy were felt in every square meter. I must admit that tears came to my eyes. Tears ran down my face, they were motionless as my eyes registered with the speed of light everything around me. Without exception, everyone there was willing to do their best to help others. There was no drama regarding the new procedure to access the venue showing vaccination cards and measuring the temperature. After all, this is not bureaucracy.
It is reassurance of safety for us in order to continue with our return. Claudio operated our brave and powerful forklift masterfully; customers were happy with cargo delivered safe and sound; the organisers were happy to see the satisfied exhibitors and we felt fulfilled for being alive, active and doing what we love – logistics for events.t
Roll on the shows! All the best, my dears,

SIRHA LYON 2021: A successful historic edition thanks to the commitment of bold players in the industry
D
uring the build-up we were so, so happy to see a high number of crates from IELA Members on the show floor. I truly cried when the gates of the show opened on September 23rd. The pulsing energy, the joy of meeting face-to-face again, finally tasting products and discussing about new projects. This is what the exhibition industry is all about: thriving commerce & business. SIRHA LYON proves to be one of the boldest examples of our industry’s resilience and a clear sign of a return to growth:
+ 2.116 exhibitors & brands, +149.100 professionals + over 350 innovations
were on show
Following five eagerly awaited days by the whole profession, the 20th edition of Sirha Lyon came to a close on Monday September 27th. This event kept all its promises for the actors of the Food Service, Catering and Nutrition industry. There is no doubt that exhibitors and visitors who decided against a participation this year deeply regret their decision of not joining the re-start celebrations. Save the
date for 2023 and be prepared to serve a huge number of exhibitors and pavilions in Lyon from January 21st to 25th 2023.t Keep up the fight! Elizabeth Niehaus IELA EXECUTIVE OFFICER

George Jacob, Member of the IELA Industry Relations Working Group, IELA Ambassador in UAE, and Regional Director of Agility Fairs & Events Dubai, represented IELA at the UFI MEA Conference 2021 and he shares with us this feedback.
O
n behalf of IELA, I was pleased to attend the UFI Middle East & Africa Conference in Dubai. It was great meeting our industry colleagues after a long time – the first in-person UFI Event after 15 months of digital events. Leaders from across the regional and international exhibition sector have gathered in Dubai for the UFI MEA Conference, to see how Dubai was taking the lead globally in restarting business events in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference, the first fully in-person event for UFI was hosted in Dubai on May 26th 2021 at Dubai World Trade Centre. The one-day event was attended by 150 attendees from 10 countries. There was a mix of speakers from inside and outside the industry. The programme included economic outlooks, case studies, lessons learnt from pandemic, precautions and plans for the future. As part of the event, there were networking opportunities with industry specialists, colleagues and new entrants. The speakers were excellent and positively 56

delivered messages of recovery in our industry. UFI organisers were delighted to hold its first post-pandemic in-person event here in Dubai, UAE, one of the first cities that restarted business events. The conference was a clear manifestation of the industry’s resilience and determination to thrive despite the current circumstances. His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of the Dubai Tourism and Dubai World Trade Centre Authority and Kai Hattendorf, Managing Director and CEO of UFI, delivered the welcome address. Other speakers include, Issam Kazim, CEO - Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, Trixie LohMirmand - Executive Vice President – Dubai World Trade Center, Chiara Palieri - Conferences and Exhibitions Advisor - The Royal Commission for Riyadh City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Khalifa Al Qubaisi – CCO – Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center, Abu Dhabi-United Arab Emirates, Sara Maria Boueri - Senior HR Director - Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Authority – United Arab Emirates and Said Al Shanfari – CEO – Oman Convention and Exhibition Center, Oman and Naji El Haddad - UFI Regional Director - Middle East & Africa Region. Also featured were two new separate ‘Open Mic’ sessions – ‘Focusing the conversation on the most important resource in the exhibition industry - The People’ and a second panel on ‘Women in the Industry’, discussing how women empowerment impacts the rehabilitation of the industry. There were also two Tedstyle talks covering human resources, talent acquisition and retention. t
“It was a great opportunity for the business event community to gain insight into topics of strategic interest, including economics, technology, hybrid events, skills and more. Looking forward positively to a speedy recovery and return of our Fairs & Events industry”. t •••••

UFI LATAM Conference 2021 August 10th – 12th 2021 Online
Laura Anchava, Member of the IELA Industry Relations Working Group and IELA Ambassador in Argentina represented IELA at the UFI LATAM Conference 2021.
M
y participation at the UFI LATAM Conference was personally an inspiring experience. It was possible to see how the different actors of our industry have faced the challenging moment that we have to live since 2020. Creativity, ingenuity, survival capacity were some of the expressions that were repeated by the speakers who participated in the 3 days of the event and whose qualities have been characteristic of companies in our field. Digitization, virtual visits to stands, participation in virtual events through the subscription modality, filming within the premises, streaming accommodation and temporary COVID health units were some of the tools that were implemented to generate income. However it has also been revealed that the sector does not have recognition as being truly important within political spheres in Latin American countries. Few governments have provided financial support to companies in this industry.
was stated by one of the speakers and I agree, when he referred to the industry as a “real business engine”. It is clear, from my point of view, that the actors of this industry have the responsibility for making our impact visible to our countries’ economies. It is not only about putting down in value the generation of jobs directly or indirectly which arise when an event performs. We are responsible for creating the origins for initial contact between individuals and companies which potentially generates a commercial relationship. I am sure that difficult situations strengthen us, not only our companies but ourselves, making us flexible, intelligent to changes, generating value, collaboration and strategic alliances. These are some of the lessons learnt from this pandemic. t

IMS 2021 International M.I.C.E. Showcase Summit 2021 September 30th 2021 Online
A summit to reflect the preparation of the MICE sector to open up effectively
I
ELA was invited to participate in the International M.I.C.E. Showcase Summit 2021, IMS2021, taking place online last September 30th. IMS2021 invited 95 speakers divided into 3 tracks of live sessions, the ‘Exhibitions Reboot’ track, the ‘M.I.C.E. Showcase’ track and the ‘Associations Buzz’ track, gathering 1120 attendees from 52 countries. A successful achievement for Exhibition Showcase, IELA Media Partner, inspired by the enlargement of its fraternity, needing a new platform to come together.
FROM PAST TO PRESENT, UNLOCKING THE LEGACY OF ASSOCIATIONS Ravinder Sethi, Chair of the IELA Committee, and also Founding and Executive Member of IEIA and 1st Vice President of AFECA, was moderator of the session. The goal was to get inside associations, from past to present, and unlock some associations’ legacy. All 3 associations IELA, AFECA and IEIA took part. Guido Fornelli explained briefly the prepandemic history of IELA. He accentuated the fact that IELA was created to maintain a high standard of quality and to give the client a first class service in order to receive the cargo, concentrating the focus on the exhibition itself and not the difficulties. On the subject of the pandemic as a threat to the industry, Guido continued by outlining the lessons learned “the most dangerous risk is a risk that you have not assessed carefully. Now we know that a pandemic is a real risk.” This realisation of the risk confronting us all led to active
support being given to members by the associations like IELA, AFECA and IEIA in order to avoid isolation. Guido emphasised that the advocacy role was and is so important with governments “to support the whole industry in order to let the restart with new, for sure better, skills.” During the pandemic, the Ambassador Programme was “taken to another level” as Ravinder pointed out and Guido spoke proudly of how members actively contribute to increasing support on a national as well as regional level. Guido is a firm believer that skills and Sustainability are the components to rebuild in the New Now. In particular, Sustainability will be a major challenge for our industry and concluded by saying “I think the Net Zero Carbon emission, the programme that UFI and other associations are trying to develop, are the ones we need to focus on in the future.” t

“I was honoured to be invited as speaker to the IMS 2.0 MICE Showcase. This possibility to represent IELA at such an important event for the international MICE industry was a great opportunity to introduce our Association work and restate strongly how Associations of professionals play an important role in the exhibition industry and in the restart of live events. So I thank once more Raghav Khosla and Exhibition Showcase for inviting me and hope to meet all these fantastic colleagues again to discuss about our industry future.” GUIDO FORNELLI, IELA CHAIRPERSON

THE ROLE OF VENUES & SERVICE PROVIDERS IN THE
I
ELA was honoured to have participated on the panel discussion around the subject of the new role of Venues and Service Providers in the NEW NOW. Elizabeth Niehaus represented IELA alongside the following speakers:
Joel Pascual President at PEPTarsus Corp. President at Phil. Association of Event Organizers and Suppliers Inc. (PACEOS)
Paul Woodward Chairman at Paul Woodward Advisory (Moderator)
Vipul Agarwal Managing Partner at Expo Events & Exhibits
Rajan Sharma Director at Interads Exhibition
Matthias Tesi Baur Founder atMBB-Consulting Group & ETT Club
On the subject of changes for the restart of the industry, Elizabeth pointed out the flourish of community apps at events which create “a 365-24/7 service reality & opportunity”. She went on to say “ This new reality is a true game-changer in my eyes, a possibility of delivering new service opportunities that are eager to be discovered to satisfy our new customer needs”. IELA has a solid basis on which to grow “Our member structure is strong, ready to serve organisers and exhibitors during the restart”. IELA strongly encouraged members to enlarge business during the pandemic by adding services in other areas of ontime sensitive cargo, selling the knowhow of a freight forwarder specialised in event logistics: punctuality, accuracy, attention, precision, flexibility. In this way, very few of its members had to leave the exhibition world.
What will be necessary in the industry is a shift to a wide-ranging view, not based on volume but on trust and on quality. Discussion in the value chain will lead to new service propositions post-pandemic. In Elizabeth’s words “The pandemic has led to an unparalleled industry transformation, giving us a unique opportunity to reimagine operations for growth”. She concluded by saying that she looks forward to a prosperous future in the exhibition and event world and beforehand it will be necessary “to find out how we can do the job better and how we can take our people, our companies, with us to better serve for a better industry”. t
Elizabeth Niehaus IELA Executive Officer
“At IMS2021, we had over 800 delegates from 50 countries and 93 speakers in 20 live sessions through the course of the day. I would like to thank IELA for their esteemed participation at IMS2021. It was indeed a pleasure to have IELA Chairperson - Guido Fornelli- speaking about the journey of IELA and the vision ahead. Equally enlightening was to have IELA Executive Officer - Elizabeth Niehaus - sharing her insights on the role of service providers in the new normal. The attendees thoroughly enjoyed both the sessions.” RAGHAV KOSLA, GROUP EDITOR & PUBLISHER, EXHIBITION SHOWCASE, ASSOCIATION-PSU BUZZ, MICE SHOWCASE

Despite the global pandemic, the Membership Working Group (MWG) continued with its main task of working with the secretariat in checking and voting on potential applicants, particularly those in “white spot” countries. Members actively participated in the online activities organised by the IELA Secretariat. The MWG Chair and Co-Chair presented and participated in the Working Group Summit of the IELA Congress 2021 in June, rallying the spirit of voluntarism amongst the IELA members. Participants of the summit now understand the role of the Membership Working Group and the work that we do.
We have listed down the following potential projects for the MWG to work on in future:
• Identify new benefits for existing members to assist in the recovery and rebuild. • A Human Resources platform that would identify unemployed former employees of members looking for work as well as a job posting area for members to post job opportunities. • A grievance procedure/ IELA mediator to look into member disputes.
Importantly, we are looking forward to seeing new & young volunteers to work with existing experienced MWG members to look into these projects. t

My final meeting took place as Working Group Chairman. It has been a real pleasure guiding the group through different projects. Now Rene Carvajal from Mexico is Chairperson with Ryu Ishida from Japan as ViceChair. I will take over as Go-To-Person from Mariane and be the Working Group bridge to the Board. We are looking for at least two Vice-Chairs so volunteers are most welcome! The great achievements of the Group are the COVID Protocol and the update of the exhibition and customs files, having quintupled the amount of information shared on the Website. Changes in the Survey are being investigated but separation of the Awards with the Survey is confirmed. 62

It will not take place but might be a topic at the next OS! 2. As we continue to move through 2021, waiting with bated breath for our industries to re-open again, we are encouraged to see small exhibitions taking place around the globe. However, as Guido mentioned, in some parts of the world, the situation is quite different. IELA’s focus will be to try to help the Members as much as possible. We had our first West & East meeting on Sept. 2nd allowing everybody to meet during normal hours. This step cemented our focus on our group purpose of building bridges & relationships between IELA Members but also with Industry Associations in every country. See IELA Media partners:
