Swimming Six new state meet records set in speedy third year at CRWC IOWA CITY, Iowa – State records continued to drop in the third year of the IHSAA State Swimming Championships at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, and home team Iowa City, West took home the team championship for the first time since 2015. State meet records were set in the first four events of the afternoon on Feb. 15, and six of the 11 events picked up new all-time best finishes. Iowa City, West picked up only one event victory, thanks to James Pinter in the 100 backstroke, but stacked up team points by medaling in 10 different races. The team title is Iowa City, West's third overall and first since the meet returned to Iowa City. Bettendorf's Charlie Bunn turned in a banner day with four first-place finishes, including individual wins in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, and relay wins in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay. His 50 free win in 20.18 seconds set a new state meet mark, and so did the final 400 free relay race with a 3:02.38 finish. Both were easily good enough for Automatic All-American honors. The four other state meet records: Iowa City, City High's 200-yard medley relay team in the day's opener in 1:31.58, as second-place Iowa City, West also broke the previous best mark; Ankeny's Trent Frandson breaking the 35-year-old 200yard freestyle record of Valley's Craig Oppel, going 1:35.68
at CRWC; City High star Forrest Frazier swimming 1:45.96 in the 200-yard individual medley; And Frazier breaking his own previous record in the 100-yard breaststroke by a full second, going 53.15 in his final individual varsity race. Frandson also repeated as champion of the 500-yard freestyle, helping 2019 team title-winner Ankeny to a runner-up finish. Waukee finished third as a team, led by three relay podiums and a 100-yard butterfly victory from sophomore Andrew Reiter.
