Tulum's Beauty Tulum's beauty is in the incredible nature we can find all around. But almost no one realizes where it all comes from: the sand on the beautiful white beaches comes from coral fossils; the cenotes are part of a cave system that is covered in old fossils. All over Tulum, in the white limestone, you will find plant and animal fossils, millions of years old, well-preserved and timelessly elegant. "We are exposing this hidden treasure to show you, in the entrance plaza, what the area underground looks like; which fossils can be found here on site and which we have found in our travels."

Art of the Arch The arch as an element of the past in architecture and the fossils as an elegant reminder of the history of life were inspiration for a new elegance in architecture and design in Tulum. The façade with more than 50 arches will be a new architectural icon in the area and an attraction for design lovers.

TOWNHOUSE IN ROME

3

BY ALESSANDRO PASQUALE

PEOPLE

Located in Trastevere, one of the most historical neighborhoods in Rome, Townhouse in Rome is placed in the middle of history in a building dating back to 1800. The design approach was to create an "urban loft” that retains the unedited landscape of rebuilding, yet is complete and comfortable.

ILEMAISON.COM / 22

The sleek concrete walls span from the ground to the third floor. They stand as sharp dividers that force functionality and inspire creativity while withstanding the test of time, necessary for modern living. From floor to ceiling the space is coated in a uniform matte finish, rigorously standardized for a sobering appearance, a perfect stage for the owners’ collection of art and photography.

The interior has a casual yet sophisticated quality, the core of Alessandro’s aesthetics. The main wall is covered floor to ceiling in a richly textured, golden sand color, while the back wall is grey with a hint of burgundy. The concrete flooring, offset by various finishes of brass, raw steel, leather and wood creates a bold yet elegant effect. Finally, the treated brass countertop in the open kitchen is the fitting backdrop for Gino’s sophisticated food. Set in this beautiful ambient, Alessandro Pasquale’s custom designed furnishings recall the Italian propensity for fine craftsmanship. FOOD AS MEDICINE Divya's healing journey with Ayurveda cuisine

Our conversation with Divya Alter, CO-FOUNDER & CHEF OF DIVYA'S KITCHEN

Can you define Ayurveda? Ayurveda is the traditional medical system of India. It is a truly holistic system that helps us balance and integrate our human

3

experience on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.

TRAVEL

PEOPLE

Ayurveda teaches the individual what to favor and avoid in terms of diet, routine, and environment in order to reverse imbalance and disease. My favorite part about Ayurveda is that it is so personalized—health recommendations are specific and customized, depending on one’s needs. No one diet, herb, supplement, exercise fit all!

ILEMAISON.COM/ 29

Can you share where your journey to Divya's Kitchen started? My journey with food began at a bhakti-yoga ashram in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where I started learning how to cook and fell in love with vegetarian food. I continued my studies in India and later in the USA. Here I met my main Ayurvedic teacher, Vaidya Ramakant Mishra, who helped me cure my autoimmune disease and with whom I’ve studied Ayurveda and healing food in depth.

Divya’s Kitchen feels like home away from home, a place where we nourish not only our body but also our mind and soul. Was it your intention to open a place where everyone is welcome and feels at home? Or is it more of who you are?

04

It’s both, I guess. Our projects are an expression of our personalities and our values. Our intention is to offer true nourishment not only through food but also through genuine hospitality. Home is about relaxation and nourishment, so we designed Divya’s Kitchen to feel like home away from home—living room-like interior, friendly staff, home-style food that not only

We also had a meal subscription service, where I consulted clients and then designed and prepared customized wellness meals for them. In 2016, The Bhakti Center offered us to take over the restaurant space on the ground floor, and this is how Divya’s Kitchen was born. We’re excited and grateful to have opened the first authentic Ayurvedic restaurant in New York City.

Why no onion or garlic in your recipes? The ancient Ayurvedic texts describe foods and herbs in great detail not only as botanicals but also what effects they have on different body types, conditions, even geographical location and season. THE ART OF

SOUND

with BASIA BLONSKA

ILEMAISON.COM / 38

BASIA

Basia's passion for music expanded beyond her over 20 years experience teaching and performing classical music, developing a profound interest in learning about the healing and transformational effects of sound and music. She broadened her study of music to include different modalities of sound healing with teachers such as Grammy nominated Silvia Nakkach, renowned sound theorist Dr. John Beaulieu, the Great Gong Master Don Conreaux, earning a sound practitioner certification from New York's Open Center. Her passion and commitment to bringing sound and it's therapeutic effects to a broader audience is a joy she shares and a joy to be shared.

THE SOUND OF

BLISSSSSSSSSS

You would need to add a few more "s "letters to the word bliss and even then it would not best describe the sound bath experience.

As a seasoned seeker of transformational relaxation, I was intrigued when invited to experience a Basia Blonska sound bath. I anticipated being embraced in a musical experience that would induce relaxation. I was curious, skeptical, and delightfully surprised.

From the moment one enters the facility, the vibe is welcoming. Tea and water is available, and you are invited to bring them into a room where cushions and blankets create a comfortable oasis of peace and quiet, enhanced by the docile sounds created by Basia's music. You literally feel bathed in the music. I get it now...a sound bath.

Though I did close my eyes to savor the moment, I didn't expect an hour later I would open my eyes to find myself deeply and surprisingly relaxed. I was even more surprised to discover the nights' sleep was the deepest sleep I have had in sometime.

Perfect 57 is the perfect name for your medical spa facility. What inspired the name? OY: Because I am a perfectionist! (laughs). But really, that’s true. But we pride ourselves on our staff. They are all extremely well-trained. Perfect 57 is a medical spa, which means we have licensed physicians on our staff. And of course we have a full range of procedures. Tell me about the treatments you offer at Perfect 57. OY: Ah, we have so many, for men and women. Olesya Yampolets is the founder of Perfect57, a state of the art med-spa on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in the heart of Manhattan.

What are the most sought after treatments. OY: Probably Tight sculpting and Cool Sculpting. Cool Sculpting is becoming very popular with women and men. It's the only fat reduction process of its kind approved by the FDA. No surgery, no scarring, no preparation or down time. After your treatment, you are out the door and back into your life. Tight sculpting uses laser technology and it is recommended for reducing cellitis, and tightening skin. Yes! It’s amazing! I’ve see the ‘before and after’ photos. Fascinating! WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF FENCING? The health benefits of fencing are many, increased muscle strength, improved cardio vascular capacity, flexibility and increased reaction time to name a few. HOW DOES ONE BECOME A CHAMPION? Hard work and, most importantly not being afraid of failure. The fear of failure is possibly the largest contributor to an athletes inability to achieve their goals. A positive mindset and being resilient is key to ones success in fencing. Prior to competition it very important to have eaten healthily, gotten enough sleep and to be hydrated. Personally I like to listen to music that I associate with a prior successful result while I warm up, this helps me get into a positive and energetic frame of mind, one that is connected with my best fencing. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE FENCING MEMORIES? Winning my first ever tournament at the iconic New York Athletic club was definitely a highlight, along with winning the inaugural Tri-State Veterans Cup, which is a multi competition series sponsored by a handful of the top fencing clubs in NY, NJ and CT. However, by far my Greatest fencing memory to date was watching my 12 year old daughter Lily win her first-ever competition after a really difficult season, her resilience made me smile. DO YOU ENJOY COACHING MORE THAN COMPETING? YES! giving the gift of fencing to eager young athletes, and watching them succeed has been my greatest pleasure. WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO YOUNG FENCERS TO STAY MOTIVATED? My advice? It's pretty simple, this is a game with swords, its fun!
