Build your credit and secure equipment with the right financing option By Jenny O’Callaghan, National Leasing
Every entrepreneur requires capital to start operating his or her business. But equipment and everyday business inputs aren’t cheap, and generally, for small businesses, revenue is limited and entrepreneurs must rely on financing. Sometimes businesses are faced with a chicken and egg problem; they need financing, but their credit isn’t strong enough to qualify. And they can’t build their credit since no financial institution will lend to them. That’s why establishing good credit early on, both personally and for your business, is integral to getting approved for a line of credit, loan or lease with any finance company. A strong credit score will build trust with lenders and make the difference between your businesses acquiring the equipment it needs to thrive or floundering in complacency.
Here’s what you need to know to improve your credit: Develop your personal credit If you are a new business owner, be prepared for credit analysts to look at your personal credit history, as this is a reflection of how you would manage your business's finances. How you repay your credit cards, loans, lines of credit all contribute to the development of your credit history.
Pay your bills on time Paying your bills on time demonstrates you’re capable of repaying debt in a responsible manner. This builds credibility and lowers your risk to creditors. /QVIVKQVO 8X\QWV[ KWV\QV]ML WV 9IOM

Trend-Spotting for 2015 By Robin Kavanagh, Sawgrass Technologies
The beginning of the year is a critical time for your business. While you’ve hopefully tied up all of your affairs to close out the past year, you should be well into thinking what strategies will grow your business in the months ahead. Assessing both your challenges and successes is a great place to start building a game plan for success in 2015. Another area to consider is what’s trending. For apparel decorators, analyzing trends can be very lucrative in terms of gaining competitive advantages, differentiation and the all-important consumer dollar. APPAREL TREND-SPOTTING FOR 2015 CONTINUED PG 12
Later in the movie, when Sonny again reacted impulsively to his sister's ongoing physical abuse by her husband, Sonny was murdered. His emotional outburst and reactions lead to his downfall because - to his enemies - Sonny was predictable; they knew he would rush to vent his anger on his brother in-law.
Keep it strictly business "It’s not personal, Sonny. It’s strictly business." - Michael Corleone, The Godfather, Part 1 In the 42 years since its theatrical release, movie buffs continue to recite lines from the central figures of the fictitious Corleone Mafia crime family in the classic film The Godfather. I've seen the movie countless times and during the last few viewings, I have tried to see the corollaries that some of the movie's themes have on modern day business practices. I am not the first to do this, nor will I will be the last. For the Mafiosi syndicate in the movie, the quote above by Michael is more like a slogan. The characters in the movie try to portray this distinction throughout the story. However, this motto frequently gets lost due to gang warfare and heated emotions. Sonny Corleone, the oldest son of Vito, was next in line of becoming the next Don (aka boss). He forgot this slogan when his father was shot and subsequently ordered brutal attacks on all rival leaders, forgetting that personal and business matters were different.
In any organization, team, or group, to lead successfully you have to remove emotion and ego from the equation. Any one of the movie's characters who reacted impulsively ended up making bad decisions - the aforementioned Sonny, the movie producer and horse-aficionado Jack Waltz, Johnny Fontane's bandleader, and Moe Green. The lesson: Think wisely and diplomatically. Act only after you have mulled over all possible outcomes that your reaction(s) will instigate/cause. Emotional outbursts, like those of Sonny Corleone, lead people to make emotional decisions, which in hindsight are often bad decisions, especially in business. The "it's business not personal" theme took on a different dynamic when Michael Corleone became Don. I (the Don) can harm you but only if it helps my business; there is no need to inflict harm if it didn't advance business interests. The underlying tone of the phrase becomes almost Machiavellian in nature - as long as I am making money, it can't be bad - can it? The lesson: By justifying one's actions in the course of turning a profit, one can lose sight of what is truly important in life - respect, trust, friends, and above all, family. An understanding of the various mottos enunciated by characters in The Godfather Trilogy to one’s business practices can provide insight into one’s abilities and may also serve to ease the stress generated day to day interactions with clients and colleagues.

With the business world as demanding as it is, an effort should be made by people to deal with each other in an objective and professional manner without descending into personal animosity and attacks. Ideally, we should treat others as we desire to be treated and should maintain positive and objective arguments as opposed to attempting to pursue or defend a matter through negative and emotionally-charged tactics or personal attacks. In the words of Clemenza from The Godfather, we should metaphorically, “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli. In the end, by leaving behind a negative or personal handling of a matter and instead taking a positive business-like approach to all issues will benefit the business world as a whole.

Industry News Gildan Activewear reports fiscal 2014 fourth quarter and full year results Announces Record EPS in Q4 and Outlines Strategic Pricing Actions to Printwear Segment Gildan Activewear Inc. (TSX:GIL)(NYSE:GIL)
announced its results for its fourth fiscal quarter and full fiscal year ended October 5, 2014. The company also announced that it will be transitioning to a new fiscal year-end in 2015, which will be the Sunday closest to December 31, rather than the first Sunday following September 28. In addition, the company announced a 20 per cent increase in the amount of its quarterly dividend and the initiation of a normal course issuer bid to repurchase shares.
Fourth Quarter Results
Net sales in the fourth quarter amounted to $666.0 million (all figures U.S.), up 6.4 per cent from $626.2 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013. Net earnings in the quarter were $122.7 million or $1.00 per share on a diluted basis, compared with net earnings of $96.8 million or $0.79 per share for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013. EPS for the fourth quarter represents a record performance for any fiscal quarter in Gildan Activewear's history. The growth in adjusted net earnings and EPS was due to higher sales in both operating segments, including the impact of the acquisition of Doris, combined with lower income tax and financial expenses.
Fourth Quarter Segmented Results
Net sales for the Printwear segment in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014 amounted to $435.8 million, up 2.8 per cent from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013. Net sales for Branded Apparel were $230.2 million, up 13.8 per cent from the fourth quarter of last year. Sales of underwear were up by approximately 60 per cent, in spite
of a high level of promotional activity from other national brands during the back-to-school period.
Year-to-date Sales and Earnings
Consolidated net sales revenues for fiscal 2014 amounted to $2,360.0 million, up 8.0 per cent from fiscal 2013 reflecting sales growth in all product categories. Net earnings for fiscal 2014 were $359.6 million or $2.92 per share on a diluted basis, compared to $320.2 million or $2.61 per share for fiscal 2013. Before reflecting restructuring and acquisition-related costs in both years and the charge for unwinding interest rate swaps in fiscal 2013, adjusted net earnings amounted to $362.0 million or $2.94 per share, up 9.6 per cent and 9.3 per cent respectively from fiscal 2013.
Strategic Pricing Actions in Printwear
The company has decided to take major strategic pricing actions in Printwear to reinforce its leadership position in the industry. The company has decided to significantly lower base selling prices and reduce and simplify its discount structure, in order to be responsive to distributors and enhance their ability and visibility to plan their business. In addition, these strategic pricing actions will stimulate end-use demand, in order to drive unit sales volume and earnings growth in calendar 2015 and beyond. The selling price reductions reflect the pass-through of a portion of the expected cost savings from the company's investments in new yarn-spinning facilities into lower selling prices in order to drive further growth and market penetration. The price reductions also reflect the further reduction in the price of cotton futures in recent months.
Embroider Buddy, a division of Parkdale Novelty (also known as Creature Comforts Toys) regret-
fully announced that Morris Kotzer, founder of Parkdale Novelty and father to Embroider Buddy founder Donna Kotzer, passed away recently at the age of 91. Morris, the namesake of the company's very own Morris Bear, had an incredible impact on the toy industry in Toronto since he founded Parkdale in 1944. His love of fun, along with his joyful personality, were infectious, as he continued to visit his office every day until this past July. Thank you to everyone who has shared memories of Morris. MegoMuseum, an online forum of toy collectors, relived their memories of Morris and discussed how much they appreciated his impact in their community. "It was Kotzer’s determination and willingness to put up the money that created the Mego 12-inch Superhero line and he is considered by us to be the father of that line." Parkdale is commonly known as the Canadian distributor of Mego Toys since the 1960s, featuring an array of superhero action figures. The company expanded its plush toy division starting in the 1980s. Donna is proud to follow in her father’s footsteps with the Embroider Buddy brand. Morris will be greatly missed by his family, by everyone at Parkdale Novelty, Embroider Buddy, and in the industry.

lion (all figures U.S.), or 5 per cent, compared to the same period in 2013. While wholesale sales increased by 2 per cent over the same period in 2013, comparable retail and online sales decreased by 7 per cent and 5 per cent, respectively. "The strength of American Apparel's operating model is evident in the 38 per cent year-over-year improvement in adjusted EBITDA," said Scott Brubaker, Interim Chief Executive Officer. "We are proud to have achieved this growth during a period of company-wide operational restructuring and in a challenging macro-economic environment for retailers." Gross profit for the third quarter of 2014 decreased slightly, down 2 per cent to $82.5 million from $84.6 million for the same period in 2013. This was primarily due to the lower retail and online sales volume. Industry News, continued on Page 6

Kathy Cheng of Redwood Classics Apparel has been named one of 13 winners of the 2014 class of EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women, a national competition and ongoing executive leadership program that identifies a select group of high-potential women entrepreneurs whose businesses show real potential to scale. Launched seven years ago, the Entrepreneurial Winning Women™ program aims to increase the number of marketleading businesses run by women entrepreneurs. "It is both an honour and a privilege to be named an EY Entrepreneurial Winning Woman™ alongside some of the world’s most dynamic leaders," said Cheng, president of WS & Co. “The future of women in business is gaining momentum by the minute and I thank EY for considering me worthy of this movement." According to an independent study by Massachusetts-based Babson College, the program is working. North American participant companies’ total 2013 revenue was 63 per cent higher than in the years before they joined the program. Individual participants average 20 per cent revenue growth annually; in the second year of participation, however, their companies have been known to grow up to 50 per cent. Winners also report increases in entrepreneurial confidence, growth goals, networks and media visibility, to name a few. "The Entrepreneurial Winning Women program has grown into a highly impactful platform that helps female entrepreneurs accelerate key corporate goals, in turn enabling them to grow rapidly," said Kerrie MacPherson, Principal and North American Entrepreneurial Winning Women Executive Sponsor, Ernst & Young LLP. "Kathy Cheng is an exceptional business leader with great potential. We are pleased to honour her as one of 2014’s winners."

It’s All About The Visuals
, By Lowell Brown, Going Social
Over the past several years you’ve likely noticed some striking changes with how all the social platforms look – both on your mobile devices as well as your laptops and desktops. There has been a gradual trend developing on these platforms which makes laptop/desktop interface design very similar to a mobile experience. So what does this mean, exactly? Overall navigating around has become much simpler, for any user. Screens aren’t cluttered as much with navigation links, ads and tiny text, with one of the most notable changes coming in the form of bigger and brighter pictures. Pantone Color InsituteŽ: Colour Trends for Spring/Summer 2015 For the coming season, the Pantone Color InstituteŽ has unveiled their new colours for Spring/Summer 2015. According to the colour experts, there is a move toward the cooler and softer side of the colour spectrum, with an eclectic mix of understated brights, pale pastels and neutrals coming to the forefront. Designers, decorators, distributors and marketing staff looking to stay ahead of the industry curve would be best served to showcase some of the following fashionable colours in their upcoming client presentations. These trendy shades, as hand picked by the Pantone Colour InstituteŽ, can easily and creatively be incorporated into upcoming programs as ink, thread and/or substrate options....so let your imagination run free!
The lead colour for women for the Spring/Summer 2015 season is
Aquamarine (PANTONE 14-4313). This airy, restful blue is cool and calming with a watery feel. A great substrate shade, Aquamarine works wonderfully with primary colours as well as pastels and neutrals.
-RLQ XV DW WKH WK $QQXDO
An invigorating turquoise, Scuba Blue (PANTONE 16-4725) is reminiscent of a tropical ocean and conveys a sense of carefree playfulness. The vibrancy of Scuba Blue adds a splash of excitement to the palette and is great as a complimentary colour.
Classic Blue (PANTONE 19-4052) is perceived as thoughtful and introspective and inspires calm, confidence and harmony. Serving as an anchor to the Spring/Summer 2015 palette, Classic Blue is a shade that works well on it's own, as a base colour, or as a complimentary splash of strong and reliable colour.

Bringing balance to the coolness of the Spring/Summer 2015 colour range is Toasted Almond (PANTONE 14-1213). A sun-tanned neutral, Toasted Almond offers comforting warmth and is indicative of a spontaneous spring, summer feeling. Timeless and versatile, this organic shade evokes authenticity and is at its best when paired with other neutrals or grays.
Strawberry Ice (PANTONE 16-1720) is suggestive of a cooling and refreshing delicacy, yet its warmth as a colour is quite appealing. Subtle and charming, Strawberry Ice is an ideal shade for Spring/Summer 2015. Both tasty and tasteful, Strawberry Ice is a confection colour that can easily be paired with pastels for a bright, spring look. Spontaneous and gregarious, Tangerine (PANTONE 15-1247) is an energizing orange shade that is not jarring to the eye. It's versatility is striking enough to stand on its own and adds vitality to a printed pattern. Good natured and friendly, but with a tangy edge, this fun-loving colour invites a smile.

Just as the name implies, Custard (PANTONE 13-0720) is a delectable yellow. Sweet and sunny, Custard is a cheering tone that brings thoughts of pleasant relaxation and comfort food. Try pairing this shade with blues or simple black or whites to help it stand out. A wonderful contrast from other hues, Marsala (PANTONE 18-1438) serves as the foundation to the Spring/Summer 2015 palette. Sensual and bold, Marsala is a daring shade. Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this robust shade incorporates the warmth and richness, while its red-brown roots point to a sophisticated, natural earthiness.
Men's 2015 Colours: It's all about the Grays For 2015, the men’s palette deviates from the women’s more than in recent seasons with an increased emphasis on natural tones, specifically grays. Glacier Gray (PANTONE 14-4102) is an unobtrusive gray that both contrasts and enhances. This shades plays off others without taking away from them. Nature’s most perfect neutral, Glacier Gray is a shade that is timeless and can be paired with virtually any colour.
Titanium (PANTONE 17-4014) is another, slightly darker, shade of gray shade that is practical, stylish and carries mass appeal. Classic and tasteful, especially when paired with darker shades, there is an implied quality attached Titanium. Use these colours as a baseline guide to help you colour your upcoming offerings this spring/summer season!

1. Bigger is Better For the last year or two, bigger prints that dominate and cover most, if not all, of a substrate have been in high demand. Consumers are increasingly turning to big-box and independent retailers alike for original, licensed and niche designs artfully printed all over or in multiple locations on their shirts, dresses, pants and more. This consumer demand ultimately spills over into the custom-decorated products industry, creating new trends and opportunities for those engaged in apparel printing. Sublimation printing technology has fed this trend, making it easier for decorators to produce custom, shortrun orders on finished poly-performance and soft spun polyester substrates, among other popular choices. Some apparel manufacturers have responded by creating blanks with “flattened seams that make printing easier for large-area designs that cross over seams on finished apparel. Desktop printers capable of printing images up to 12 x 18 are good entry-level solutions for apparel decorators to quickly and economically add larger designs to their products. Low-cost production units with roll feeds from 24 to 44 wide and beyond provide easy access to all-over sublimation opportunities. Cut-and-sew sublimation printing is also trending, particularly among sports markets. Faster, more efficient printers make imprinting designs on a single piece of fabric that can be cut and sewn into a shirt more cost effective than ever. We have every reason to believe these trends will continue into 2015.
2. Creativity is King As digital decorators push the boundaries of design with bolder, more creative ways to imprint, consumers are increasingly looking for apparel that goes beyond the ordinary. For

example, many imprinters are mixing things up with non-traditional logo placement on shirts. Though logos and brand names are most often found on the back or over the left breast of a shirt, we’re seeing more creative placement of these symbols these days. One popular design breaks up the brand name from the logo mark, with one imprinted on the sleeve and the other on the cuff. The recognition effect is the same, but is much more eye catching. We’re also seeing designs that focus only on a sleeve or having a marquis image on the bottom of shirt or pant leg, letting simplicity of the shirt’s color juxtapose the creativity of the design. Now is a great time to think about how you can integrate more creativity into your product offerings. Your customers will be looking for what’s new and different, and you’ll want to be the one who gives it to them. Take a look at what your competitors are offering, and think of newer, fresher ways that you can deliver that same value. Talk to your customers to gain insight into what they like, what they see in the market and what they are looking for from you.
3. Times are Changing There once was a time when people changed expectations to accommodate products on the market. More and more, we’re seeing the opposite. Manufacturers are increasingly understanding the needs of their end-buyer and adapting their product lines to better meet the needs of those consumers. Clothing racks that were filled with unisex shirts in small, medium and large 10 or 15 years ago, now hold a variety of shirts fitted specifically for women, children, toddlers, big-and-tall men and young adults. And with each addition of a more customized version of a products that is already in demand, your opportunities to offer your customers more value at premium prices also increase. Given the growing diversity of substrates on the market, regularly evaluating the needs of your customers is critical. It’s also important to stay current with the latest products your suppliers have to offer. Budget in some time and money to go to a trade show this year or scour your industry publications to see what new takes on your standard products are out there. Whenever you can make an old idea new again, dollars are sure to follow.
4. It’s Not All about Shirts Yes, shirts and sweats are the lifeblood of the decorated apparel industry. While they are always popular and in demand, they’re not the only game in town for imprinters. These past few years have seen tremendous demand for a variety of other types of decorated apparel, sparking a full-on trend. According to an NPD Group study released in May, men’s apparel sales jumped five per cent in 2013, thanks in no small part to increased demand for fashion socks. Sock sales – specifically sublimated fashion socks – account for the second-highest growth category overall and helped men’s apparel inch ahead of women’s apparel sales for the second year in a row. The report credits Nike for picking up on the European trend of showing off bold, design-heavy socks, and bringing it to North America with its Elite line in 2012. Heading into the summer 2014 season, customized sublimated socks were trending furiously, gracing the pages of fashion magazines and driving sales online and in stores. We expect that sublimated socks will continue to be ontrend on 2015, so be sure to investigate this hot substrate if it’s not already a part of your product line. Hats, athletic sleeves, bandanas, headbands and gaiters are also worth looking into, as we’ve also seen a steady rise in their popularity among consumers. With increased availability of these substrates for decoration and creative marketing among sellers, the sky is the limit for how far this trend can go.

So what’s next for apparel trends in the decoration marketplace? Looking at what has been popular in the past and what is gaining momentum now, are good places to start. Another proactive thing to do is visit a shopping mall and take a look around. A lot of what’s on the racks and shelves in the retail stores today, may end up in the catalogs of the blank apparel suppliers in the months ahead. If you approach your 2015 business strategy with this forward-thinking mindset, you’ll be in good shape to enjoy a happy new year. *JW]\ =PM *]\PWZ# Robin Kavanagh is the Global Public Relations Manager for Sawgrass Technologies’ Consumer Division. Manage Your Debt Understand the terms of each financial contract you sign. Note the payment due dates, your payment methods and the flexibilities. Be proactive and contact your creditor should you not be able to meet your obligation.
Don’t over-extend yourself too quickly Do you have a business plan? A financial plan can act as your road map to a strong financial position to help grow your business and not over-extend your debt load. As an added bonus, it will also help you establish the financial and marketing targets on which your business will operate.
Pull your credit report every 6 to 12 months Credit bureau agencies like Equifax and TransUnion track everyone’s credit. For a nominal fee, you can request a credit report from them and see exactly what a credit analyst would see, along with your credit score. The credit bureau report is also a great way to prevent identity theft. If someone has taken out credit in your name, you’ll be able to see this. If a fraudulent loan or lease occurred, you can file a claim with the agency and once proven, it will be erased from your credit report. You can’t instantly build a solid credit score, but following the steps above frequently and consistently will improve your chances of securing the equipment your business needs. Now that you’re familiar with implementing creditbuilding blocks, you are ready tackle your next big decision regarding financing: should you lease or buy your equipment?
Leasing vs. Buying Equipment
Leasing: Cons • Possible higher borrowing costs • Not as much instant equity as with a purchase or loan
Buying: Pros • Build full equity through ownership • Potentially claim depreciation as a longterm tax deduction (however, this may be a con if you prefer tax deductions in the short term) • Claim loan interest as a business expense
Buying: Cons • A purchase or down payment will tie up cash flow • You’re stuck with the equipment if it becomes obsolete
Questions to Ask: How sensitive is your cash flow or line of credit for equipment purchases? Does your desired equipment have a high rate of obsolescence? What’s your preference – possibly claiming your equipment tax benefits in the short term through leasing or long term through depreciation?
Answer these questions first before you make any leasing or buying decision and always consult your accountant to work the numbers and find out what’s right for you.
A Real World Example
Let’s clear the air right away. There’s no hard and fast rule that says either leasing or buying is ideal. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. The optimal decision will depend on your business and financial situation.
Leasing: Pros • Potentially expense your lease payments as a tax deduction • Preserve your cash and lines of credit – more capital for business inputs • Customize your payment schedule to match your revenue • No traditional down payment • End-of-lease flexibility with a stretch lease option for lower monthly payments • Upgrade your equipment once it becomes obsolete
Oddball Workshop, a Vancouver-based small business doing everything from wall vinyl to Direct-toGarment printing, needed a new industrial printer to improve work capacity. Business was increasing but the company couldn’t afford to buy a new printer. Like most small businesses, cash reserves were tight and its credit wasn’t strong enough for a loan. In this case, buying equipment wasn’t an option. I reached out to the owners and explained how leasing could help. Together, we structured a lease with flexible payments that matched their cash flow and credit, and acquired the industrial printer Oddball Workshop needed. Because of the affordable monthly payments, the print shop had more cash on hand to purchase daily business inputs like ink, garments and signage material. Since then, Oddball Workshop has leased more equipment to meet its customers’ needs and built a solid credit rating for future financing. Exploring your financing options, improving your credit and making the right financial decision for your business doesn’t have to be painful. Oddball Workshop followed the above advice and achieved its equipment needs. Now, re-evaluate your business. Are you in a similar situation? If so, use this article as a tool to help you. You’ll be on your way to building your credit and acquiring your much-needed new equipment. *JW]\ =PM *]\PWZ#

Time Is a Hungry Beast Six tips on how to win the fight against time by boosting your productivity By Andy Core
It's that time of year again – when New Year resolution lists are still fresh and you vow to make 2015 the year that these improvements actually "stick". One of the most common resolutions that top most entrepreneurs’ and business people’s lists is being more productive. How can we boost our productivity when we’re barely able to tackle the seemingly constant unexpected day-today interruptions? The answer is actually quite simple. We all know what it feels like to start the day knowing we won’t even come close to tackling all the tasks on our to-do list. Having too many tasks and not enough time often causes people to lose focus and motivation, causing them to drift away from pursuing their highest priority work. The amount of information and responsibility that most business owners must juggle, coupled with the volume of decisions that must be made, can and often do add up to an overwhelming tide that saps willpower, the ability to concentrate, and most of all, the ability to make reliable, high-quality decisions. However, the good news is making a few tweaks in your workday can make a huge difference. As a credentialed, award-winning thought leader on increasing employee engagement, I’ve helped countless stakeholders become what I like to call a "Thriver": someone who works hard, meets or exceeds expectations, and enjoys high levels of personal and professional success, accompanied by lower stress levels (yes, lower stress levels!). In my book, Change Your Day, Not Your Life: A Realistic Guide to Sustained Motivation, More Productivity, and the Art of Working Well, readers are given the tools to create precisely that type of life. It also includes a curriculum to help companies reengage employees, improve communication, retain talent, and boost innovation—all of which catapult overall profitability. The six strategies I recommend to help you boost your productivity:
1. Stop having so many meetings: In a survey reported in Industry Week, 2,000 managers claimed that at least 30 per cent of their time spent in meetings was a waste of time. Therefore, if you’re meeting once a day for an hour, you’re wasting an entire half-day of work every week! The solution? Unless you’re really needed, don’t go. Meet less often with fewer people; commit to limiting your time, and most importantly, have a clear goal for each meeting and stay strictly on topic so as to maximize your time. 2. Answer your emails only two or three times a day: Do you find yourself clicking back and forth between your email and work tasks hundreds of times a day? If so, you’re not alone. You don’t want your email to pile up or for your colleagues to think you’re ignoring their communications, and while that’s understandable, it’s not productive. This is so important, because too often, we become slaves to our emails. If I were to answer every email instantaneously, I’d literally be answering them all day. This would increase my stress levels and scatter my focus, causing me to get less done throughout the day. Plus, I’d be answering them so quickly that I’d do so without being mindful of what I was writing, causing me to reply in error or unnecessarily. Instead I have three periods during the day where I check my emails (right before lunch, again at 3:00 p.m., and right before I leave for the day). After the third period, I stop - meaning that when I get home, I stay present and recharge my batteries.
3. Get big things done before 9:00 a.m.: Ever notice how your morning sets the tone for your whole day? As Sir Isaac Newton famously said, "Objects in motion tend
to stay in motion." So if an object (you) gets a groggy, frustrating start, you’ll probably feel sluggish all day long. However, if you start your day with positive and productive ideas, actions, thoughts, and feelings, you’re likely to gain momentum throughout the day. I know a top salesman whose daily pattern involves getting up early, exercising, eating breakfast, spending time with family, and accomplishing several work activities before 9:00 a.m. By the time his colleagues are settling into the starting blocks, this person has already blown through important tasks on his to-do list, and is geared to continue that pace for the next several hours. The point here isn’t how early this person’s alarm rings, it’s that this person makes the most of the first several hours of the day instead of snoozing and procrastinating. What you do first matters. And since the new year is here, this is a good time to kick off a new morning routine, and stick to it.
4. Work in a quiet place: Working in an office can often feel like a mad house with your boss or employees asking you for a minute of your time; your cubicle mate making conversation; and everyone else having constant conversation, pulling your focus in many directions. Instead of battling this challenge every day, decide when you’re not going to be available for conversation unless absolutely necessary. Put headphones on, close your door, go to a coffee shop, or work from home. Do what it takes to help you avoid distractions. 5. Own up to your junk hours: "Junk hours" are a little like junk food: while they provide short-term pleasure, they contribute to long-term imbalance and exhaustion. For instance, junk hours might include surfing the Internet, shooting the breeze with colleagues at the water cooler, checking email in order to avoid doing other work, or even attending an unnecessary meeting. You need to identify when you’re going through the motions of work, versus when real work is being done. Don’t be ashamed that your junk hours exist, because everybody needs to take breaks and shift gears. Your task now is to exchange your low-value ‘junk’ activities for ones that build greater health and value into your workday.
When you check an item off your list, celebrate: It’s a given that you have a to-do list. Maybe it’s on paper, on your smartphone, or just in your head‌but you have one. Whether it’s completing a PowerPoint presentation for your next pitch meeting, responding to a client about renewing a contract, or simply dropping your clothes off at the dry cleaners, take a little bit of time to celebrate checking a task off your list. By celebrating, I mean getting up, giving your brain a break, and refocusing your energy to get started on your next task. By making small changes in how you approach your day, you can begin to take back your to-do list and accomplish your goals more quickly. *JW]\ \PM *]\PWZ#
