As we progress through - and soon (hopefully) exit - the third wave of this protracted pandemic, there is real optimism that the light at the end of the tunnel will indeed be bright for many industries, including our own. When the pandemic first hit in the spring of last year, suppliers across the country were impeccable in pivoting to PPE in order to help distributors get back to business, allowing them Demand for core promotional products has gradually to sell products that were in massive ramped up from the early days of the pandemic demand and in short supply. In these early days of the pandemic, PPE sales were robust as companies scrambled to secure masks, sanitizers, face shields, gloves and PPE accessories in general. Shift, continued on Page 10

JUNE 2021 Vaccines in the workplace At the time of this writing, over 29 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered to Canadians. With several million more doses to be delivered over the coming weeks, employers have slowly but surely begun to deal with a very sensitive topic: how to deal with employees who decide to not take the vaccine. In Canada, both the Federal and Provincial governments have stopped short of making the Covid-19 vaccine mandatory in the workplace. Sooner or later,
employers will need to deal with employees who do not want to take the vaccine.
on vaccines, and understand the reasons why an employee decides not to be vaccinated.
Under occupational safety measures, an employer has a responsibility to ensure a safe environment for workers. Due to COVID being a global pandemic, an employer could indicate that vaccination is mandatory to ensure a safe workplace for all employees. But there is no legislation from any government that will enforce this unless the workplace is healthcare-related.
If your business allows it, let unvaccinated staff continue working from home. Or you could give them alternative roles that do not require being in the field or dealing with people on a daily basis. It is important that you get your employee’s consent before changing his or her role to avoid a constructive dismissal claim.
Employees can claim that taking a vaccine was not a condition of being hired and there is no law to have the vaccine forced upon them. Any workplace policy implemented on making vaccines mandatory can be challenged due to the current lack of legislation.
If these options don’t work out, make sure unvaccinated staff follow existing health and safety guidelines on physical distancing, masks and maintaining respiratory and hand hygiene.
Employers need to be very careful when dealing with employees that decide not to be vaccinated. Employers must also prevent non-vaccinated workers from being bullied or harassed in the workplace for their personal decisions.
While the legal landscape regarding Covid-19 evolves, employers must continue to take great care in dealing with issues arising from having non-vaccinated employees in the workplace. Consideration must be given to all employees and arrangements must be made to ensure a safe work environment for all.
The tools available for employers to deal with nonvaccinated employees are based on private, open dialogues in which they can provide education

Walmart invests in drone delivery provider Walmart announced its investment in DroneUp, a US-based drone services provider, to develop a scalable last-mile delivery solution. Last year,Walmart had partnered with DroneUp to launch trial deliveries of at-home COVID-19 self-collection kits. The trial demonstrated that Walmart could offer deliveries in minutes versus hours. DroneUp operates an on-demand drone delivery network that matches its database of more than 10,000 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified pilots to missions nationwide. “Walmart already has a significant part of the infrastructure in place – 4,700 stores stocked with more than 100,000 of the most-purchased items, located within 10 miles of 90 per cent of the US population. This makes us uniquely positioned to execute drone deliveries, which is why our investment in DroneUp won’t just apply to the skies but also the ground. In the coming months we’ll be beginning our first operation at a store in Bentonville, Arkansas,” the release said. Earlier this year, Walmart had announced a similar investment in Cruise, an all-electric autonomous vehicle company.
Unisync Corp reported a 24 per cent sales decline to $21.1 million (all figures Canadian dollars) in its second quarter (Q2) FY21 ended on March 31, 2021, compared to sales of $27.7 million in same period of previous fiscal. The company incurred a net loss of $0.78 million. In its outlook, the company stated that the Covid vaccination across the US and a rise in domestic travel will cause a strong increase in uniform sales to its airline accounts as well Emblemtek_Imprint_May-June-2021-1.pdf 1 04-16-2021 as other accounts in the transportation and hospitality sectors.

News {Business Development} Fog, continued from Page 1
Leaders often beckon their people to “Trust the Process” but then are surprised or frustrated when people don’t just magically fall in line. The idea of Trusting the Process is good in theory, but all too often the process is blurry due to a lack of clarity on the game plan or the inability of the messenger to communicate the road ahead. Therefore, the process is unclear and trust is nowhere to be found. The best leaders and teams on the planet understand their role is to help navigate their people through the fog and to continue to advance the Mission. Here are five necessities to help your team navigate through the fog:
1. Identify Obstacles
Don’t assume everyone sees or has been willing to be honest about the obstacles, challenges and threats you are facing as a team. Take time to step back as a team and identify the obstacles that lie ahead and assure the team that you will face them together with a solutions-focused mindset.
2. ReClarify Mission / Vision & Values
Take a step back and make sure people’s sight is clear on the Mission, Vision and Values of your team. The Mission is WHY you are going on the journey you’re on. It is the heartbeat and soul to all your efforts. The Vision is WHERE you are heading as a team or organ-
ization. It’s the dream of what is possible and what can be created together. Paint the picture of what you hope to create that doesn’t exist and what that future Vision looks like. Your Values are HOW you are committed to traveling along the journey. They are the compass that helps you know that you are on track with HOW you’re committed to traveling. Values aren’t dictated to us, but are discovered, discerned and identified by participatory discussion.
3. Articulate the Game Plan
It’s hard to “Trust the Process” if we aren’t fully sure what the actual game plan is or the process for moving forward. Take time to articulate the strategy moving forward and why you’ll approach it the way you are as a team. The strategy is WHAT you are going to do proactively to bring the Mission, Vision and Values to life. It’s the game plan that clarifies the priorities, people, and next actions to bring the dream into reality.
4. Deposit Trust as the Messenger
Trust does not magically exist between people or leaders and a team. It is bartered every single day by the deposits we make in the relationship over time. Do we do what we say we are going to do? Do we hold ourselves and others accountable for holding up our end of the commitment? Leaders deposit trust by being transparent about the obstacles and what hasn’t been successful and by honouring their commitments. As the messenger, they deposit trust by owning the next stretch of road ahead and jumping in with the team to seek solutions.
The best cultures proactively help their people navigate their way through the fog, together. They are grown, developed, cultivated and led with intentionality. then continue to update the progress being made along the way. Every time you return to these discussions and seek clarity as a team, the fog doesn’t quite seem so thick. The path forward becomes clearer. Your team may not have all the answers, but they’ll have a compass with clear direction on where to head. The best cultures proactively help their people navigate their way through the fog, together. They are grown, developed, cultivated and led with intentionality. The process for developing high-performing and engaged teams never stops and the best leaders, teams and organizations are committed to setting the temperature in how they hire, onboard, do performance evaluations, develop emerging leaders, and recognize excellence. The best leaders invest in their teams and how they travel, together. If you’re experiencing fog, division, negativity, blame, blurry vision, disconnection or uncertainty, it may be time to clean off the windshield!
The best leaders and teams on 5. Cascade Consistent Messages the planet understand their role As the strategy and game plan becomes clearer, rinse and is to help navigate their people repeat the message throughout the team and organization. through the fog and to continue Marketers remind us that it takes seven times for a consumer to hear a message before they take action and the same thing to advance the Mission. is true for cascading messages throughout your organization.

How To Act When You’re the Top Dog Leading like a professional or barking up the wrong tree By Jeff Mowatt
Judging by the way we elect some of our political leaders, you’d think that the three most important qualities to leadership are: popularity, an outgoing personality, and loyalty to your supporters. Coincidentally, these just happen to be the three most outstanding traits of our 6-year old Corgi, affectionately named “Sadie.” Sadie is popular with everyone she meets. She’s outgoing - to the point of being embarrassingly familiar with strangers - and she’s loyal, to us and anyone else at the park with a milkbone. When you are the “top dog” in an organization, there are
indeed three keys to leading others that will strengthen customer loyalty, increase spending per customer, and enhance team spirit. They distinguish you as being a professional - significantly more effective than amateurs who have a title but nothing beneath the surface.
Professional leaders also have huge egos. But their pride is centered in their belief in their people. In fact, they go as far as involving their staff in the creation of an organization mission statement. Boring stuff ? Only when some marketing person drafts it, gets the boss’ endorsement and hangs it on the wall in the lobby; never to be remembered or referred to again. 1. Harness the power of the pack. The real value of a mission statement lies in involving Too often, amateurs get wrapped up in their own egos. everyone in its creation. People discuss why they do what They expect their people to support them simply because they do for a living. You discover shared values and an underthey are the “boss”. ling purpose to work beyond taking home a paycheque. You tap into the common bonds that are the true motivators of the human spirit. Sound touchy-feely? Absolutely. Why else would they want to work for you? Job security? That’s difficult to provide. People want to work in an environment where they feel like they are a part of a greater good. They can be forced to work for you because you have a title. Professional leaders think of themselves less as a boss and more as an activist rallying support for a worthy cause. People will support a leader who has a strong sense of mission, whose values match their own.
2. Sniff out the right information.
Amateur leaders love efficiency. They think the key to increased profits is to simply reduce costs and work harder. The problem with this leadership style is that efficiency is usually not the problem. The problem lies with their products and services not being tuned-in to the needs of the market. To a professional leader, there’s no use in finding a faster way to climb the ladder if the ladder’s leaning on the wrong wall. They systematically and proactively check to make sure they are heading in the right direction. Tools they use include: • Ask the competition. Professionals learn to innovate by discussing issues with their competitors. Sound absurd? Amateur leaders shun the competition; professionals understand that today’s competitor may be tomorrow’s business partner. • Ask customers. Amateurs think they understand their customers’ needs because they do business with them. Yet, how many times have you eaten at a restaurant and decided that you wouldn’t go back? Statistically only one out of every 27 dissatisfied customers actually complains. Amateurs wonder why business is dropping off. Professionals admit they need to know what their customers really think, so they regularly verify client satisfaction. • Use local business students to conduct surveys. Students get huge response rates. Think about it: wouldn’t you be more likely to answer a few questions to “help a student with their class project?”
3. No tricks here
Amateur leaders ooze with golden promises and good intentions. Example: a customer asks when you can deliver something to them. You think you can get it to them by Wednesday. The amateur’s response, “I’ll try to get it to you by Wednesday.” But something comes up, so delivery is delayed by one day, until Thursday. At least you tried. No big deal, right? Correct - it’s only a big deal if you had any aspirations of being respected. Professional leaders know that their most valuable asset is their personal reputation. It’s simply not worth jeopardizing that reputation by making a commitment they may not be able to keep. So professionals make a practice of underpromising and overdelivering. As someone with a title, you are the ‘big dog’ trotting by the yard where the neighbourhood dogs are lounging. Whether you lead like a professional or an amateur will determine whether they are motivated to run with you, or just stay on the porch.

News {Business Development} Shift, continued from Page 1
As the pandemic wore on however, the global supply chain of PPE eventually came back online, reducing the need and demand for these products which our industry did so well to pivot to quickly. While suppliers and distributors still have a few accounts that are buying PPE in bulk, its safe to say that the saturation point in the market for PPE products has been hit. Unless customers are looking specifically for customized PPE, you can walk into virtually any store in Canada and purchase these products; distributors that were fielding 30-40 calls every week for PPE stock are now getting only one or two inquiries per week. “We’ve witnessed a big downturn in PPE demand. Last year at this time there was a huge push towards face masks and hand sanitizer because you couldn’t get any, and then as soon as the big retailers jumped on the bandwagon it just wasn’t worthwhile,” says Theresa Hunter of Dawson Creek, B.C.-based Promo Shoppe. “We still do weekly orders for decorated face masks, but that’s the only category worth noting.” Whether or not PPE remains a promotional product category once the pandemic is finally behind us is up for debate, with some industry insiders believing the niche is here to stay due to the widespread shift in mindset that has occurred. Our entire society has now become hyper-sensitive to germs, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing for us in the promo world. With our industry’s heavy reliance on event business, its understandable to think that PPE kits and accessories will outlive the pandemic and remain in demand as society gradually opens back up, and large corporate and recreational gatherings come back into existence. As our communities start to reopen, events are going to start ramping up again and one of the top things an event coordinator may need to procure is PPE kits. When you walk through the door of the first in-person event you return to, and they give you a PPE kit, you’re going to know that the host is putting safety first because they’re giving you the tools to do so. Some suppliers feel that santizer will become the “gravy” to our industry. Remember the days when you were actually able to sit in a restaurant with friends or clients? You sat down,
The common sentiment is that things are different right now; the volume of requests suppliers and distributors are getting is ramping back up, but the size of orders aren’t as big as before.

ordered a sandwich with fri es; if you had a good server, he or she wouldn’t even blink and ask: “Would you like gravy for those fries?” And you looked up and said, “Sure I’ll take some gravy!” This is what sanitizer may become to the promo industry now. Every time distributors sell anything they can upsell with sanitizer because people need it, companies need it, and it’s going to help society open back up to normal again. While the post-pandemic popularity of PPE can be debated, what is certainly clear is the saturation of these products has caused a natural shift back into core promotional products, which has echoed across the country by suppliers and distributors alike. While this shift back to core promo products is welcome news for everyone, sales volumes are still not back to prepandemic levels; this is understandable since many industries are not close to 100 per cent yet. The common sentiment is that things are different right now - the volume of requests suppliers and distributors are getting is ramping back up, but the size of orders aren’t as big as before. Summertime generally is bit hard to judge due to seasonality and the aforementioned fact that many regular outdoor events aren’t yet taking place yet, however many suppliers and distributors are noting a shift towards more personalized products vs. generic bulk offerings. Customers that were used to having the big corporate parties where they’d order thousands of products for, are instead doing smaller, more expensive personalized giveaways. As such, distributors and suppliers have noticed an uptick in the value per item for orders that include brand name products and more expensive pieces. With the swing back to core promotional products, the issue for suppliers and distributors has shifted; the problem now isn’t getting the orders but rather securing inventory to fulfil the orders. Like many industries right now - natural resources, food, retail, to name a few - the production and availability of products is running at fractional capacity, which is causing shortages and wreaking havoc throughout the global supply chain. Many suppliers are back-ordered on a significant bulk of their offerings. “It’s a lot harder to get products as inventory challenges are very prominent, but it’s with complete compassion and understanding,” says Hunter. “Every category - whether it’s hard goods or wearables or drinkware - everyone is in the same boat but it’s not just promotional industry, everyone is dealing with supply issues and people are willing to wait due to this understanding of the current realities,” she added.
With the swing back to core promotional products, the issue for suppliers and distributors has shifted; the problem now isn’t getting the orders but rather securing inventory to fulfil the orders. “It was surprising to see how many holes in inventory there was across all platforms - it was a big challenge, but it is understandable with what is happening globally,” says Michael Filice of Woodbridge, Ontario-based FM Promotions. “Inventory is getting better for generic bulk products which seems to be catching up to demand. Where we find gaps is in the higher level brand name offerings as this inventory gets wiped out right away,” he added, lending credence to the fact that current demand is being concentrated on higher valued offerings. To further complicate inventory constraints, overseas freight costs have jumped and are now three-times more expensive than they were pre-pandemic. There have been so many delays in shipments due to COVID: there are less vessels on the water, fewer containers being loaded, less people working on the ports off-loading and working in factories to produce the goods that it’s slowed everything down in a massive way, and in some cases by three to four months. As a result, suppliers have encountered significant logistical challenges, especially in certain product categories. In response to this, many suppliers started projecting bigger volumes of core items sooner to ensure there is adequate inventory when eventually needed. So if something is currently available, suppliers have indicated that they are picking these products up now and holding on to them for when it’s needed, rather than risking it not being able to get it in on time or at all. With all these challenges that have been thrust upon us, industry insiders agree that the pandemic has shifted the collective focus to the near-term. While our industry - like all others - continues to evolve and work its way out of the pandemic, the resiliency and optimism for better days ahead is undeniable. There is a bubbling anticipation that a postpandemic boom is coming. Come Fall, when vaccination thresholds have hopefully been met, things can start to return to normal once again and the expectation is that we will see a big boon in events, trade shows, concerts and sports, much like what is transpiring south of the border.

Four Little Fixes to Kick-Start Your Digital Transformation By Howard Tiersky
The digital transformation of our world is roaring full steam ahead. Are you on the train? While disruptor companies are born ready to serve the needs of today’s digital customer, “legacy” organizations find reinventing their brand experience is a long, arduous journey. It can take years. But don’t despair, there are some small changes you can make right now that may not outright delight your customers…but will at least minimize their aggravation. Some problems are tough to fix, but some aren’t. So, start with those. These quick fixes may not get your customers to outright love your brand, but if you can identify some things you are doing that confuse, frustrate, or disappoint your customers that you can just stop, that’s a step in the right direction. Taking these small steps might deliver quick, measurable, sustainable financial improvements, which can demonstrate to key executives that your overall transformation program is capable of driving tangible business impact. Second, you improve your customers’ experience, which improves brand perception and demonstrates progress. The bottom line is that customers today have very high expectations. If you currently have a weak user experience, it pays to address it now rather than months or years into your digital transformation. Here are some tips for getting started.
1. Ferret out experience glitches that might be turning off customers.
Almost every company has these types of seemingly small digital glitches in user experience that add up over time to form an impression. This becomes even more problematic when a digital disruptor offers your customers a new, shiny, digital journey that has avoided these types of flaws. A few years ago, United Airlines asked me for my feed-
back on a flight. Nice idea, but the first line of the email read: REPLIES TO SURVEY@UNITED.COM ARE NOT MONITORED. When I kept reading, I found that lower in the message, it provided a link for me to take a survey. Clearly, they wanted my feedback; they just didn’t want the feedback via email. But the execution sent the wrong message: ‘Tell us about your recent flight! But we aren’t actually listening to your response!’”
2. Get your wording right.
HubSpot did a study of over 40,000 “call-to-action buttons for email sign-ups.” They found that if the text of a button read, “Click Here,” site visitors were three times more likely to click than if it read “Register.” Of course, that doesn’t mean that every button on your site should be labeled “Click Here,” but merely points to the importance of getting the wording right.
3. Proof your website (or lose customers!).
Give your website and any materials you send or publish a careful review. A few seemingly careless errors or inconsistencies can cause your potential customers to lose faith in you. We worked with one client selling very expensive ‘six-figure’ B2B solutions that had a website that was good in many ways, but that had a variety of small glitches, formatting irregularities, inconsistent capitalization, and other seemingly minor anomalies. The potential customers we interviewed in research sessions regularly zeroed-in on these small defects as details that made them question the quality of the company’s products and services. While in truth, there was probably no direct connection between those two things, there was in the customer’s mind. Imagine losing a $25,000 sale because of lost confidence
resulting from a typo on your website.
Get out of your lane to fix the small stuff.
I worked with one large retailer where all the executives agreed that the navigation menus on the $1 billion-plus e-commerce site were confusing. Yet nothing was done to fix them because nobody considered it their job. One executive focused on merchandising, one on pricing and promotions, and one on checkout processes, but there was no clear owner of cross-site navigation. Nobody wanted to step on toes or go outside of their mandate. So, it stagnated, despite the fact that everybody’s bonus was tied to total sales, and the menus were clearly turning off some customers. The lesson: When everyone agrees that there is a problem that negatively impacts the customer’s experience, step up and deal with it. First, ask who should be in charge of fixing it. If there’s no obvious answer, form a new task force and get to work. Easy fixes should never be delayed. Relatively quick-and-easy fixes can go a long way. If you fix 100 things like these this quarter, and then 100 more next quarter, over time you can have a substantial impact. Digital transformation is a marathon, not a sprint. The impactful changes you make now will add to your momentum down the road.
