ACTIVITY REPORT 2017

DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS

2017 HAS BEEN A VERY EXCITING AND SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR THE IMZ The year 2017 was busy, multifaceted and successful: The IMZ Academies were very popular and the interest for both Academies was overwhelming. More than 250,000 people worldwide enjoyed Music Film Festivals, programmed by the IMZ. For the iEmmys the IMZ invited a high-class jury and partnered up with the EBU TV Music Group for a second Pitching Session during the Golden Prague Festival. Moreover, for the first time ever, IMZ and EBU collaborated on awarding a Lifetime Achievement Award to legendary Director Brian Large. Our very own Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin 2017, the world’s largest trade fair for performing arts films, set again new records, while a highlight was the presentation of NHK – Japan Broadcasting Corporation and their demonstration of 8K technology. Lastly, another milestone of 2017 was the approval of our application for the EU Fund from Creative Europe – Culture sub-programme “Support to European Networks”, which allows the IMZ to intensify and expand its activities. But maybe the most important news in 2017 was that our IMZ Director Katharina Jeschke was unanimously voted the new Secretary General by both, IMZ Board and Member Assembly. I would also like to use this opportunity to thank former Secretary General, Franz Patay, for his outstanding work and I am especially glad that he remains involved with the IMZ as Legal Counsel. Katharina Jeschke, with her background as a media and communication professional at major cultural events, is the right person to take IMZ into a new era. She joined the IMZ in 2009 and has been responsible for a substantial growth and successful implementation of Avant Première Music + Media Market in Berlin. She holds a degree in international business administration and is a music enthusiast and violin player. On behalf of the IMZ Board and our hard-working IMZ Team in Vienna, I would like to thank you for another great year. Looking forward to see you all at Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin 2018! Best wishes, Arild Erikstad, IMZ President

DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS A NEW GENERATION, A NEW AGENDA, BUT ESTABLISHED VALUES

Having been with the IMZ since 2009, I am happy and honoured to take over as Secretary General and to continue working for the benefit of IMZ Member Organisations. I want to express my gratitude to my predecessor Franz Patay for the smooth transition as well as to the IMZ Board and Member Assembly for entrusting me with this position. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our Members + Partners for their continuous support and their vital contributions to the viability and growth of the IMZ as a global business network. The IMZ has been creating value for IMZ Members and the performing arts industry at large for more than half a century. I am committed to holding up the IMZ’s longstanding values + partnerships while also staying on the pulse of time and creating new initiatives + opportunities. Our goal is to expand and deepen our activities around the four main pillars Market Access + Network, Professionalisation, Audience Development and Innovation: One of the IMZ’s biggest contribution to a connected market and a strong network is our flagship project Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin, which has already witnessed considerable growth. In order to support a sustainable future for the performing arts film industry the IMZ facilitates young talent promotion, knowledge transfer and development opportunities through diverse professionalisation initiatives. Furthermore, we will remain dedicated to reaching + engaging new audiences as well as to staying on the forefront of current developments + innovations. The IMZ has an incredibly rich foundation – a longstanding history, Board Members who are experts in their field, Member Organisations that are key market players as well as renowned Honorary Members, a zealous IMZ Team in Vienna together with the work of previous management. As the new Secretary General I could not ask for a better foundation and I look forward to working on common goals with longstanding partners as well as forging new collaborations for a sustainable future of our specialised sector! Best wishes, Katharina Jeschke, IMZ Secretary General 4

IMZ PROFILE

WELCOME TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY DEDICATED TO PERFORMING ARTS IN AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA The Vienna-based IMZ International Music + Media Centre was founded under the aegis of UNESCO in 1961 to preserve the performing arts as a cultural asset. With this goal in mind, our mission is to promote performing arts in and through audiovisual media in order to inspire and engage new audiences for music + dance. Regular industry gatherings and b2b events do not only enhance the quality + span of the network but also act as marketplace for music + dance films.

AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT The distribution of cultural content through audiovisual media reaches + engages new audiences. In order to build on this effect, the IMZ has been programming Music Film Festivals worldwide since the festival character and the free admission allow for low barriers to attend. Additionally, audience development is a crucial topic in the IMZ’s professionalisation efforts. INNOVATION Innovation and staying on the pulse of time are deeply embedded in all IMZ activities. Additionally, we specifically engage in showcasing pioneering technologies for the Arts and spearhead working groups on innovative approaches + solutions for the specialised industry.

Hosted by the IMZ, Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin is the largest trade fair for cultural TV content and performing arts in audiovisual media. The 2017 edition set again new records: 550 international industry representatives gathered to get exclusive previews of more than 500 high-class music + dance films. Experts and senior executives of production companies, public and private broadcasters, distributors, streaming platforms, as well as cinema sales agencies, programme buyers, music labels and performing arts institutions came together for five days. But the Avant Première Screenings are not the only reason why Avant Première is the B2B event and market place of our specialised industry: FRONT ROW SEAT TO THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE SECTOR As part the Technology Focus in 2017, exclusive partner NHK Japan Broadcasting Corporation showcased globally unique technological innovations: a state-of-theart 8K Ultra High Definition installation with a 3D 22.2 multichannel sound system that transported participants into a new dimension of reality. Furthermore, Avant Première 2017 examined the technological approaches to hyper-realistic experiences like 360° and Virtual Reality. In the interactive science exposition organisations such as Arte, Berliner Festspiele, Brunel University London, Fraunhofer Fokus, Google Germany, ARRI and Okio Studio, promoted professional collaborations between technology and the arts.

CONNECTING THE INDUSTRY Avant Première is the international sales event + coproduction market for production, distribution, broadcasting and streaming in the realm of performing arts films. In order to strengthen this global community, Avant Première 2017 incorporated several special features: The IMZ Members Session devoted an afternoon exclusively to IMZ Members and allowed them to mingle, connect and exchange, as well as to give their vote in the General Assembly. The programme focus “Meet the French” shone a spotlight on French organisations and provided them with extensive exposure throughout the event, culminating in a rousing reception. Lastly, in order to promote connectivity with EFM European Film Market, our cooperation continued, featuring attractive deals for participants and joint Special Screenings. ENJOY + MEET THE STARS Apart from screenings, cutting-edge conference programme and customised business opportunities, Avant Première also offers festive celebrations and glamourous evenings: The ARTE Opening Party was a fulminant kick-off with a live concert of famous rock/pop band Mando Diao, while stars like Soprano Danielle De Niese, trio Il Volo, Choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen or Producer Ingmar Bergman jr. presented their productions during Avant Première.

The Film Festival at Vienna Rathausplatz (AT) was first organised in 1991 and is the largest festival of its kind worldwide. Even in its 27th year, the festival is not one bit old and continues to fascinate with its impressive 300m2 screen and state-of-the-art technical equipment. During a time span of 66 days exceptional operas + musicals, classical + pop and rock concerts, ballet + dance films as well as short films and a designated children’s programme were presented. Incomparable stars from the classical realm such as Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanča, Juan Diego Flórez, Lang Lang or Sir Simon Rattle delighted with their talent while the pop + rock programme was shaped by legends such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, George 20

Michael or the Rolling Stones, providing almost intimate insights in rarely shown productions. Award-winning dance productions like “Midsummer Night’s Dream” created by Alexander Ekman or “Young Men” by the BalletBoyz delivered stunning moments while fans of classical ballet got to enjoy productions from the Vienna State Ballet or the Mariinsky Theatre. Set in front of the spectacular scenery of the Viennese city hall, the open air cinema was complemented with an outstanding culinary festival, serving creative and exotic delicacies. As the advocacy group for the performing arts film industry, the IMZ is committed to ensuring a thriving and sustainable future for this specialised sector. One initiative – the IMZ Academy, a master class series addresses this professionalisation goal in two ways: On the one hand, the IMZ Academy is designed to equip professionals with industry-specific skills in accordance with newly arising challenges and opportunities in performing arts + audiovisual media. Due to the ever evolving and developing best practice in this area, the IMZ Academy hence addresses the training needs of young talents initiating their career, as well as those of established market-players that seek for know-how in specific areas, alike. Apart from knowledge transfer, the second objective is to further empower the cultural sector via interdisciplinary collaborations and sustainable networks. With small group sizes, team activities and social gatherings, IMZ Academies are specifically designed to serve as a platform for connecting, networking and exchange. In 2017 the IMZ Academy celebrated its fifth year of promoting professionalisation in the realm of film production, performing arts, distribution and new media. Topics include performance capture, digital strategies or audience development for dance, opera or the orchestra. This year, two editions – one with the focus on orchestra, one on opera – helped performing arts institutions to identify and establish relevant strategies to promote and position themselves in the digital word.

RE-IMAGINING THE ORCHESTRA FOR THE DIGITAL AGE 27 participants from 17 institutions and 7 different countries took part in the IMZ Academy for Orchestra in the Digital Age at the Barbican Centre London. The decline in the coverage of orchestral concerts on conventional media, coupled with the need to develop and connect with new audiences and communities calls for new thinking and new strategies. Hence, this IMZ Academy edition was designed to address these challenges with experts presenting best practice in marketing strategies, streaming solutions and the latest capture-technologies. RE-IMAGINING OPERA FOR THE DIGITAL AGE 24 participants that joined from 19 institutions from 13 different countries took part in the IMZ Academy for Opera in the Digital Age, taking place in the course of the International Television Festival Golden Prague. Expert speakers from renowned institutions elaborated on creative ways of communicating with opera audiences and examined possibilities in performance capture and streaming in order to reach and engage new audiences in an innovative manner.

Committed to opening up new avenues and possibilities, the IMZ partnered up with the EBU European Broadcasting Union in order to promote the development of music + dance film projects. In early summer 2017 we hence called for proposals that could qualify for the rare opportunity to pitch directly to EBU Music & Dance Experts. With 16 high-quality submissions, three proposals were pre-selected by the EBU expert jury and were invited to the EBU-IMZ Co-Production Development Pitching Session, taking place on 27 September 2017 in the course of the International Television Festival Golden Prague. The IMZ is happy to be able to facilitate such promising business endeavours as an exclusive service for its members.

Another IMZ initiative to promote young talent and provide professionalisation opportunities were the One-on-One Expert Sessions, held in the course of Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin 2017. This format is the ideal setting for established and emerging talents to get direct feedback + advice from seasoned experts.
