Amare New home in 2022

DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS, 2021 was undoubtedly one of the most active years for the IMZ. In countless conversations, IMZ Roundtables + meetings, we learned about the state of the industry, what’s needed most + how to support our network the best way. And yes, music + dance film as an art form is of utmost importance to all of us. We’re convinced that we all emerge from this joint journey as an even stronger international network, preserving the global cultural heritage! We can’t wait to meet in person again to share our unique family feeling and to personally welcome the record number of this year’s new members. Our 60 years of expertise are reflected by a wealth of accomplished IMZ projects, all guided by our 4 main pillars: Market Access, Innovation, Audience Development + Professionalisation. Numerous IMZ Academies or the Music Film Festivals took place, and again we lent our expertise in international jury + pitching sessions. A big novelty was Avant Première 2021 took place exclusively online, counting participants from all over the globe - from Mexico to Australia and from Japan to Austria. More than ever, we aimed at safely accompanying our members on the joint path of

digital transformation. Content.Agent, the new digital search engine and B2B marketplace for the global film industry, was launched and we further defined the IMZ Standards to ensure compatibility in the market. We’ve crossed borders of our industry through cross-sector exchange, developing new solutions + creating synergies. This led to expanded partnerships with networks, organisations + friends such as FEDORA, Ars Electronica and Frankfurter Buchmesse. Moreover, we advocated the interests of the entire network by signing several Open Letters to the European Commission, calling for better recognition of music + performing arts in all policy areas. Now it’s time for 2022, a year full of excitement + diversity, with the Board Elections coming up. Stay tuned + be part of dancescreen in partnership with Cinedans FEST ’22 or the IMZ Academy on Multi-Camera Directing! Finally, we want to express a heartfelt thank you to all partners, members, friends + the IMZ Team for such a productive year. Together we are strong and will continue to support and develop art + music in audiovisual media in the future with new formats, platforms, and unknown possibilities.

The IMZ International Music + Media Centre, based in the heart of Vienna, was founded under the aegis of UNESCO in 1961 to preserve the performing arts as a cultural asset. With this goal in mind, our mission is to promote performing arts in and through audiovisual media to inspire and engage new audiences for music + dance. All our activities are based on four pillars: MARKET ACCESS + NETWORK As the international business network with more than 150 member organisations, we connect the creators of the performing arts – the world’s renowned stages, dance companies, opera, and concert houses – with the audiovisual branches – film + TV production, distribution, public + private broadcasting and streaming + VOD platforms. Regular industry gatherings and b2b events do not only enhance the quality + span of the network but also function as a marketplace for music + dance films. PROFESSIONALISATION To ensure a sustainable future for this specialised industry, the IMZ spearheads learning + development opportunities. By disseminating state-of-the-art information on current trends, providing crucial resources, fostering knowledge transfer of industry-specific skills, and engaging in young talent promotion as well as offering pitching opportunities, the IMZ acts as a strong interest group for industry representatives and the sector.

4

AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT The distribution of cultural content through audiovisual media brings the big potential of reaching new audiences. To build on this effect, the IMZ programmes Music Film Festivals worldwide since both the festival character and the free admission lower barriers to attend. Additionally, audience development is a crucial topic in the professionalisation efforts of the IMZ. INNOVATION + NEW BUSINESS MODELS Innovation and staying on the pulse of time are deeply embedded in all IMZ Activities. We specifically engage in showcasing pioneering technologies for the Arts and spearhead working groups of innovative approaches + solutions for the specialised industry. With the recently launched IMZ product Content.Agent, we offer a search engine + digital B2B marketplace for film licence trading bound to revolutionise the audiovisual industry. Within these developments, the IMZ + its members are advancing revolutionary IMZ Standards on Metadata + Copyright for the film industry further.

IMZ ONLINE SERVICES

IMZ ONLINE SERVICES GET INVOLVED www.imz.at/imz-online-services www.contentagent.net

The growing diversity and increasing digitalisation of the international film sector presents a major challenge for the audiovisual industry. This also means new opportunities for the global content trade and transactional business models. Industry players increasingly seek more efficient, safe + satisfactory transactions to stay ahead of their game. In this context, the IMZ network and organisations developed two innovative projects to support the industry in facing the beforementioned challenges and harness its strengths: Content.Agent and IMZ Standards. CONTENT.AGENT Content.Agent fosters + encourages stronger digital cooperation within the creative industries and supports stakeholders in the audiovisual sector in meeting the requirements of both the market and the audience. It enables established networks of buyers + sellers within a sector to reach new market players across the globe, while contributing to a safer data environment. At the same time, the visibility + availability of content is enhanced. The IMZ Standards are used with Content.Agent to facilitate the global film licence trade. With Content.Agent companies can find the right content in a few clicks, facilitated by the use of the IMZ Metadata Standard. Content. Agent also functions as a database for a company’s assets and licence rights, and allows a digital, modern and clear storage of content. It allows a more efficient trade to get the correct licence rights information to seal a deal in a fully secured digital room, to protect the intellectual property in a data-secure environment, and will host a pitching platform and co-financing mechanism to support the con-

18

tent creation by the industry – for the industry. In the past year the IMZ proudly conducted 50 industry presentations of Content.Agent to over 300 representatives of the film industry and the onboarding of IMZ members as first users. At the start of the first version of the application (MVP) in autumn the project already received the approval of leading producers, distributors and broadcasters from the industry across several continents. IMZ STANDARDS As digitalisation increases, workflows are becoming more digital, content sourced and traded increasingly via digital platforms and performing arts are enjoying new popularity in new media. With the IMZ Standards all market players in the performing arts film industry are provided with the necessary tools to confront the challenges posed by digitalisation and the shift from analogue to digital. The Standards also ensure compatibility between market players, strengthen industry cooperation and warrant legal security in transactions with cutting-edge technology. We thank all of our partners for their confidence + common will to change the digital future for the better!

IMZ STANDARDS GET INVOLVED standards.imz.at

The IMZ presents three standards to benefit the entire audiovisual media + music industry: The IMZ Metadata Standard establishes a unified format for content data sets. This allows consistency and compatible structures for a wide range of industry players. Running on sustainable technology, it is proven to be flexible + easily compatible with other systems. It is inclusive of all forms of content, including music + film. Using the IMZ Metadata Standard, any content snippet can be classified in a uniform + universal structure. Consequently, within its integration in Content.Agent, assets can be traded, protected + handled systematically, helping buyers, sellers + distributors work more time- and cost-efficiently – actively shaping the film trading business. Merged with Content.Agent, the IMZ Metadata Standard 20

makes it easier to browse and find the right asset, increase content visibility and guarantee compatibility between buyers + sellers. ISCC code4film is a solution for a content-based identifier. With this tool, any artistic product can be identified: from manuscripts, music tracks to films and even film snippets. With that, the intangible value is protected. The ISCC code4film is open-source and free to use. It is non-profit oriented and can be installed on the server of any market player. The European Licence Ledger registers asset ownership and rights information to resolve possible conflicts. In integration with Content. Digital Cross Over is a cross sector project within the Creative Europe funding programme of the European Commission. The past 18 months, main aim was to demonstrate + explore the current challenges facing the creative + cultural industries. Led by the IMZ, and together with Ars Electronica, Börsenverein Group, Centrica and Izneo, digital as well as on-site events took place throughout the year to bridge culture + audiovisual content through digital technologies. The consortium therefore explored new approaches in the use of innovative technologies to facilitate access, monetisation, distribution, and promotion of Europe’s cultural heritage. The outcome was a final presentation, showcasing best-practices in cross-sectoral collaboration and discussions with key stakeholders on the needs of the creative industries for

cross-sectoral development. Furthermore, the Digital Cross Over Blog came to life, sharing best practices + exchanging ideas with representatives on how to successfully tackle questions that matter today. Among the experts interviewed, Matthias Röder + Kay Meseberg, IMZ Innovation Ambassadors, ventured informative + valuable views into the future of music, technology and programming. For the second time in a row a competition for digital projects took place alongside FEDORA’s prestigious prizes for opera, ballet, and education, with the IMZ as an expert partner and host of the international jury. The FEDORA Digital Prize encourages artistic innovation in opera + ballet through digital experimentation + to advocate new ways of interactions with audiences using digital tools. Furthermore, the goal is to trigger new collaborative approaches through digital innovation across different media. The IMZ Academy is a master class series for young and established professionals in audiovisual music + dance production. Highly practical workshops and interactive seminars facilitate intensive exchange between renowned experts and talented practitioners. Covering topics reach from performance capture and innovative technologies to audience development and digital strategies in the digital world. The IMZ Academy aims at developing innovative, industry-specific know-how and establishing sustainable, interdisciplinary networks for participants + institutions from around the globe. Since the IMZ Academy is committed to delivering hands-on experiences + applicable input, expert speakers share their professional insights using real-life examples and specific challenges. The goal is to further empower the cultural sector with in-

terdisciplinary collaborations and sustainable international networks. While an IMZ Academy is an immersive, interactive workshop usually with a duration of two days, an IMZ Academy Session is a shorter training unit in cooperation with another institution or event in order to foster synergies + connectivity. The year 2021 was very multifaceted, with one IMZ Flying Academy Pilot and two IMZ Academy Sessions. On top, representatives from the IMZ Network participated in the Annual Congress and General Assembly of the AEC Association Européenne des Conservatoires and presented the results of the IMZ Flying Academy 2021.

IMZ ACADEMY SESSION AT KARAJAN MUSIC TECH “IS ANYBODY OUT THERE? RADICAL NEW WAYS TO REACH AUDIENCES IN THE PERFORMING ARTS” This online IMZ Academy Session at Karajan Music Tech explored innovative projects on how to connect with audiences and looked at three very different creative and technical case studies on reaching + connecting with audiences: Hope@Home by Arte, a digital portfolio by Opera North, and FEDORA Digital Prize 2020 Winner “Laila”. By merging Professionalisation, Audience Development + Innovation, the panel discussed the core themes of the industry and the IMZ. Thanks to all expert speakers and to Matthias Röder + the Karajan Institute Team for the cooperation and for working closely together for the 4th year in a row on exchanging + finding synergies.

IMZ ACADEMY EXPERT SESSION 2021 “INNOVATING THE FUTURE OF CLASSICAL MUSIC TV” The focus of this IMZ Academy Expert Session during the Golden Prague Festival was sharing key topics + opinions on the future of classical music within public-service broadcasters’ content strategies. As public-service broadcasters across Europe are redesigning their content slates to appeal to the full cross-session of the societies they serve, classical music can find itself marginalised, as more popular, contemporary genres allow broadcasters to reach wider audiences more effectively. 6 expert speakers offered insights into how broadcasters + producers can innovate by presenting classical music in new ways to reach new audiences.

IMZ FLYING ACADEMY PILOT “FOSTERING DIGITAL CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION IN THE PERFORMING ARTS” In June, the first internal pilot for the IMZ Flying Academy supported by the AEC Association Européenne des Conservatoires took place online. 12 students from the Koninklijk Conservatorium / Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama together with 5 performing arts + media experts discussed digitalisation in performing arts, conducted workshops on their own projects, and finally pitched them to the experts in speed dating sessions. This allowed the development of individual projects in an informal environment. The outcome showed great potential, leading to extending the programme in the upcoming years: with its body of experience and con34

tacts, the IMZ Flying Academy will train conservatoires + arts universities to incorporate digitalisation into their syllabus. Goal is to prepare students effectively for the challenges + opportunities presented by the digital world. This will happen by offering a bespoke programme from which conservatories and universities can choose according to their needs, schedule, and budgets, with support of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires. The IMZ wants to thank all motivated students as well as all experts for their valuable insight into the latest developments in the field and their constructive feedback!
