DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS, 2020 has been a year like none before. With closed concert halls and film productions coming to a halt, our industry faces unprecedented challenges, which demands unparalleled flexibility + creativity on our part. At this difficult time, the purpose of the IMZ is clear: to support + guide its members through the crisis. In this spirit, the IMZ is engaging in conversations with each one of its members to learn about every individual situation. We are still listening, applying customised solutions when necessary and further developing the IMZ Agenda resting on the urgent needs + concerns that are being expressed. Along these lines, the programme of our yearly gathering Avant Première was adapted to secure access to content and acutely needed business opportunities. Therefore, Avant Première Music + Media Market Vienna 2021 will take place on-site in Vienna + online to make sure that we connect with partners + friends and do business with one another – members for members! Moreover, further measures such as the IMZ Shine a Light Award came to life, which will recognise initiatives by IMZ Members connecting people through the arts in difficult times. The IMZ is also in ongoing dialogue with other sectors, joining cross-sectoral roundtables to shed
light on the challenges faced by our industry. In addition, the IMZ is advocating the interests of its members + of the sector at large by joining petitions calling for more EU budgets. In the meantime, we will keep tackling yet another challenge notably accelerated by Covid-19: digitalisation. Together with the members, the IMZ is developing IMZ Online Services, the search engine + digital B2B marketplace for film licence trading to be launched in 2021. Within this framework, the IMZ and its members are defining IMZ Standards on Metadata + Copyright. By uniting the expertise of our entire industry, we are making a joint contribution to its future sustainability! Yes, 2020 has undoubtedly been a year of unprecedented difficulty, and at the same time it has brought the relevance of music + dance films to light. Many look to the new year with concerns, but the IMZ carries an unwavering mission at its core: to be a strong, unrelenting support system of partners and friends for each one of its members. 2021 will mark 60 years since the foundation of the IMZ – 60 years of passion for music + dance films, resilience and lasting bonds across borders. And we are committed to take each one of you into the next year with us: one for all, all for one!

PANEL“DIGITAL CROSS-OVER x FBM: DRIVING DISCOVERABILITY THROUGH METADATA 16 October 2020 online @ Frankfurter Buchmesse GET INVOLVED standards.imz.at
The audiovisual sector calls for a common ground for digital transactions to be efficient + secure. In 2020 + as part of IMZ Online Services*, the IMZ + its members laid the groundwork for the IMZ Standards on Metadata + Copyright using best practices of user-centric development. Real needs were assessed and technical solutions were proposed, tested + validated by the members of the IMZ. IMZ STANDARDS ON METADATA The IMZ Standards on Metadata consist of a Minimum Metadata Standard Set in a unified format built on XML technology. This ensures that all assets on IMZ Online Services* contain the essential data in the same format while also allowing for automatic data enrichment. In 2020, the IMZ hosted a panel at Frankfurter
Buchmesse on the role of metadata for content visibility. IMZ STANDARDS ON COPYRIGHT The film industry requires a legal frame for licences to be valid + secured: more so in the digital realm. The IMZ + the ISCC Foundation are developing what exists for books: the ISCC Film Identifier to ensure content-based asset recognition on IMZ Online Services*. Once a licence deal is closed, the European Licence Ledger registers all legal information on a public blockchain. In 2020, two IMZ Academy Tutorials presented the IMZ Standards. Moreover, the IMZ + the EBU Copyright Group regularly exchange on copyright issues in music + dance film production + distribution. *working title

The Content Innovation Council (CIC) has been designed to actively support Europe’s cultural + creative sectors, to identify the main structural hurdles and to respond to the challenges resulting from digital transformation. As an active member since the creation in 2019 at THE ARTS+, the IMZ is one out of 14 institutions + organisations from across Europe. The CIC is constantly working on an effective innovation strategy for digitisation + new technologies in the cultural field. The goal is to advise, support and research the cultural and creative industries on innovation within the Content Innovation Council. The council’s initial findings + suggested solutions were presented + further elaborated at the “Cross Sector Day” at Avant Première 2020 in Berlin. Furthermore, at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2020, CIC joined forces with 22
creativeSHIFT, a community aiming to increase the competitiveness of Europe’s creative industries and make a decisive contribution to future innovation policy. By combining the expert leaders of the Content Innovation Council with the broader creative community, the project will not only save time and resources but also paves the way for new innovative ideas that all content sectors will benefit from. After a great Kick Off this year, the IMZ has been involved in the programmes such as the Content Innovation Inspirathon, to continuously support + strengthen the project.
