HIDE AND SEEK. ELĪNA GARANČA
Presented by EuroArts Music International
Presented by LTV - Latvian Television
In search for musical answers to current socio-political questions, soul musician Joy Denalane embarks on a journey through Europe and discovers the world of folk music. The pilot episode takes place in Austria and explores the country’s musical tradition which has much more to offer than just alphorn, accordions and yodeling. Discovering Mahler’s roots in Austria, Joy gets lost to the world with a pure traditional music band in Tirol and Toblach, encounters young and wild folk musicians from Federspiel to Alma and jams with the legend of Viennese Song Roland Neuwirth.
The last two years have been a new dividing line for the Latvian-born opera star Elīna Garanča. She enjoys the prime of her beautiful voice and the power of her personality conquers audiences all over the world. The documentary follows the singer in New York as she says her farewell to Octavian in “Der Rosenkavalier”, in Munich as she prepares for the title-role in Donizetti’s “La Favorite” and in Göttweig enjoying moments of silence during a night concert at the festival “Garanča and friends”. Living her private life between her home in Riga and Malaga, Elīna reflects on her life.

A world premiere: Varnava, one of the most popular choreographers in Russia, brings back Tishchenko’s work with a new choreography. At the core of the production lies a radically different interpretation of “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” from the one we have seen in the opera “Prince Igor”. This production features spectacular director’s work and Tishchenko’s piercing music, which ran at the theatre for 14 years.
The Munich Philharmonic and Valery Gergiev present the most spectacular and ambitious cycle of the composer’s Symphonies. All the performances take place in the Monastery of St. Florian in Linz/Austria, a venue inextricably linked to the composer and his final resting place.

DREAMING OF A JEWISH CHRISTMAS
SEVEN GATES OF JERUSALEM
Presented by Riddle Films
Presented by Les Films Figures Libres, Czech Television and Spring Prague Festival
Directed by Larry Weinstein and set almost entirely in a Chinese restaurant, “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas” is an offbeat, irreverent musical documentary that tells the story of a group of Jewish songwriters, including Irving Berlin, Mel Tormé, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans, Gloria Shayne Baker and Johnny Marks, who wrote the soundtrack to Christianity’s most musical holiday. It’s an amazing tale of immigrant outsiders who became irreplaceable players in pop culture’s mainstream - a generation of songwriters who found in Christmas the perfect holiday in which to imagine a better world, and for at least one day a year, make us believe in it. MON 19 Feb 2018 14:45 - 15:45 Screening Hall

The Seventh Symphony “Seven gates of Jerusalem” is of remarkable scope. It bears witness to an introspective thought about faith, based on texts of the Book of Psalms by David, the Old Testament. This work for soloists, choir and orchestra, composed in honor of the city of Jerusalem, evokes an oratorio. For expressive purposes, Penderecki uses specific instruments: tubaphone, percussive objects he designed, and the shofar, an ancient Jewish liturgical instrument.

How many lies can a person tolerate? This is the question asked by Henrik Ibsen’s drama “Ghosts”, which has been transformed into a ballet by theatre director Marit Moum Aune together with choreographer Cina Espejord in a new production by the Norwegian National Ballet. “Ghosts” is a psychological thriller in which the characters learn more and more about their own stories. It’s about how that which remains unspoken can grow, and turn into something unbearable.

Taking the form of a football match, this modern dance piece toys with conventions existing in the very separate worlds of football and modern dance. The piece is a football match, and it‘s played very seriously. Both teams (dancers) will do their best to win the game through scoring and style points from their dancing. Everything is going down on a late summer night in the central square in Nancy, France.

KREATUR Presented by Sasha Waltz & Guests Ahead of the 25th anniversary of her company, Sasha Waltz returns to the roots of her artistic work. She has always sought dialogue with other art forms. The theme of strong, mythical female figures runs through her work, which led her to concentrate on rites and rituals, and the relationship between the individual and the group. For “Kreatur” Sasha Waltz together with her 14 dancers examines the phenomena of existence against the background of a disrupted society: power and lack of power, dominance and weakness, freedom and control, community and isolation.

360° FIGARO Presented by PARS Media “At once the theatre transforms itself into a sun”, a stage direction by Mozart reads. Gazing at the sun can be beautiful but what would it be like to actually see it from inside? The 360° camera promises such a peek. “360° Figaro” is a music film shot in virtual reality: an opera scene, conceived and staged exclusively for this new medium, live performed both vocally and instrumentally. Instead of having a conventional centrifugal angle like in an arena, our point of view is a centripetal one. REAL VIRTUAL CONCERT HALL – FROM BONN OUT INTO THE WORLD Presented by Beethoven Anniversary Society Music is inseparable from renewal and expansion - this is abundantly obvious with Beethoven. Beethoven the man, the musician and the composer did not conform or comply. He explored, experimented and pushed the limits of instruments, of musical form, of sound. He made use of new technology (e.g. music-automation or the metronome), pursued new paths and opened up entirely new horizons, for himself and for music. Accordingly, the Beethoven Anniversary in 2020 offers the ideal occasion to develop a vision for a 21st Century concert hall which - fully in the spirit Beethoven - is radically untethered from a 200-year tradition, and which opens up new potential for artistic creativity, production and perception.
