ACTIVITY REPORT 2016
DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS 2016 WAS AN EXTRAORDINARY YEAR FOR THE IMZ, AS IT WAS OUR 55TH ANNIVERSARY
Looking back, we are happy to say that, once again, our very own Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin, the world’s largest trade fair for performing arts films, was a huge success. We would like to thank the more than 450 participants, who helped make this edition the spectacular event that it was and our largest one to date. It is always great to be around people dedicated to music and art who can help you and your business reach your goals and beyond. A highlight of this year’s edition, which made us especially proud, was announcing our new IMZ Honorary Member, the legendary tenor Juan Diego Flórez. The Film Festival at Wiener Rathausplatz once again attracted more than half a million visitors throughout the summer. True to the IMZ’s mission, the festival was free of charge and open to everybody, just like the additional Music Film Festivals, which we curated all around the globe. The 14th edition of the dancescreen competition took place in June, in association with FRAME: The London Dance Film Festival, presented by BalletBoyz, turning London into a hub for dance film experts. The ‘dancescreen Pitching Session’ also fostered the development of coproductions by creating space for contacts, discussions and networking. In order to do even more to promote international production companies, the EBU and IMZ partnered up to create a new pitching format, which offered a new business opportunity and financial support for intended future productions. This year we also proudly announced the newly elected IMZ Board for 2017 - 2019, consisting of representatives from internationally acclaimed broadcasters, producers, distributors as well as educational institutions. I am grateful to have been elected president once again and I would like to express my gratitude to all the board members for their dedicated work and important support. On behalf of the IMZ Board and our hard-working IMZ Team in Vienna, I would like to thank you for another great year. We hope to see you at Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin 2017. Last but not least, we look forward to supporting and celebrating the performing arts media industry for another 55 years. Best wishes, Arild Erikstad, IMZ President ACTIVITY REPORT 2016

THE IMZ’S 55TH ANNIVERSARY
PROMOTING THE PERFORMING ARTS ON THE PULSE OF TIME, SINCE 1961
The convergence of music and the media is both, vision and action of the IMZ International Music + Media Centre. Encompassing a wide range in the performing arts, the IMZ has been an advisory body for music and dance in the media, for the past 55 years. To this day, we are dedicated to the development, dissemination and promotion of music and dance through audiovisual media, worldwide. For more than half a century, we have been pursuing this goal together with our members – from the production of art films, to their international distribution and broadcasting and the provision of music and dance content on constantly changing displays, monitors and screens – recorded and live. We also see a major task in serving all those who are professionally engaged in audiovisual music and dance projects: through specific activities, services, and resources like the IMZ Archive and IMZ Database and as a forum for exchange establishing an essential link among the various people participating in the music and dance media business. Thanks to our members we are able to make music sound around the world and artists be recognized and admired by ever growing audiences. The IMZ looks forward to continually supporting and promoting the performing arts media business for another 55 years. ANNIVERSARY INNOVATIONS NEW IMZ NEWSLETTERS Celebrating our anniversary, we further improved and reinvented some of our important services. After all these years, it is of course still our goal, to promote IMZ Members in the best ways possible. This is why we launched a new IMZ Newsletter format, placing IMZ Member news directly in front of those audiences that really care. To ACTIVITY REPORT 2016
address target groups even more effectively, the conventional IMZ Newsletter was divided into two different formats in September 2016: a Customer Newsletter offering specials and news on releases, broadcast dates, live streams and industry insights directly from the producers, as well as an Industry Newsletter serving as an exchange tool for professionals. This enables an enhanced promotion of IMZ Members and helps reach target audiences more efficiently. We have also made it even easier to upload and design news content individually. IMZ Members can now create their messages themselves! A new online entry form allows for an easy online submission, directly on the IMZ’s website. IMZ MEMBER DIRECTORY We are also thrilled to announce the relaunch of the IMZ Member Directory – the number one tool for IMZ Members to get in direct contact with 1.000 experts in the performing arts and media business! A fter months of development we have met our main goal: supporting IMZ Members with a state-of-the-art contact resource, easy and user-friendly to navigate and access. T he IMZ Member Directory connects you with decision makers all over the world. It provides a full list of exclusive contact details of all our members, so that you can easily contact departments and individuals without detours and put your own contacts out there to take your business further.

Hosted by the IMZ, Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin 2016 was the most successful edition to date: 450 participants from all over the world came together in Berlin for four days. 63 companies presented over 500 film productions during the Avant Première Screenings to international buyers, producers, distributors, broadcasters and partners for sales, coproduction and worldwide transmission. 2016: A YEAR OF CELEBRATIONS 2016 was full of anniversaries. We welcomed participants to join us in the merry celebration of 55 years of the IMZ and 40 years of Clasart Classic, whose CEO Herbert Kloiber addressed the audience, inviting all those present to clink their glasses and enjoy the evening. Other companies seized the occasion to commemorate their anniversaries too: both Unitel and Classica celebrated turning 50. WELCOMING JUAN DIEGO FLÓREZ AS AN HONORARY MEMBER OF THE IMZ In keeping with the festive character of this year’s official opening ceremony, the IMZ proudly granted world-class tenor Juan Diego Flórez the IMZ Honorary Membership. The bestowal was followed by the Screening of ‘Juan Diego Flórez and Friends’, the wonderful concert gala for the singer’s charity Sinfonía por el Perú.
AVANT PREMIÈRE TALKS: WHAT’S NEW AND INNOVATIVE IN THE INDUSTRY? Once again, Avant Première offered a wide range of content relevant to the audiovisual media industry. Added to our extensive programme for the first time in 2016, Avant Première Talks gave participants the chance to present their innovative products, technology or services to their target audience in 20-minute speeches. A discussion panel examined ‘The Present and Future of Public Funding for the Arts’, inviting journalist and host Axel Brüggemann, Marie Mas-Moisy from CNC, Alessandro Senesi from the European Commission and Miryam van Lier from the Dutch Cultural Media Fund to give an outlook on current future dynamics in public funding. COOPERATIONS WITH THE EUROPEAN FILM MARKET AND BERLINALE TALENTS Avant Première and The European Film Market continued to team up, giving participants of both events access to one another at reduced fees. Further, the cooperation between Avant Première and Berlinale Talents continued, as part of the IMZ’s focus on supporting up-and-coming talents. Also, this year’s enlarged One-on-one Expert Sessions offered young and established talents the chance to get in touch with industry specialists in exclusive face-to-face conversations: Experts in the production and distribution of music and films, the curating of film festivals and music publishing, as well as the decision makers of music labels and broadcasting companies were never this accessible.

DANCESCREEN AT FRAME: THE LONDON DANCE FILM FESTIVAL The very first edition of FRAME: The London Dance Film Festival, presented by BalletBoyz in association with the 14th edition of the dancescreen competition took place in June. During this time Kingston Upon Thames was a hub for dance film experts: creative talents from all over the world joined for a comprehensive festival programme, consisting of screenings, panels, the dancescreen 2016 pitching session and workshops. The IMZ again provided a large part of the industry experts among the attendants: Both established and aspiring filmmakers took advantage of exclusive networking options with producers, distributors and the major international broadcasting stations. For the screening programme all of the shortlisted films, which were selected from the over 300 submitted shorts and features for the dancescreen competition, could be viewed during the Festival. ACTIVITY REPORT 2016
ABOUT DANCESCREEN First launched in 1988, dancescreen is now one of the world’s leading international dance film festivals, competitions and conferences. In the mid-1980s the IMZ recognised that there was a need to create a platform that would showcase a new genre and promote it to TV makers and programmers. With the support of broadcasters – from TV producers, commissioning editors and programme buyers – the first dancescreen was created as a forum for discussion, production and promotion. The festival immediately became a flagship for dance film and video activity. International dance film coproductions between broadcasting organisations such as the BBC and NHK are just one of its legacies. Since its founding, the festival has been a vehicle to engage and inspire filmmakers, dance and video artists, distributors and broadcasters. BENEFITS dancescreen participants get the chance to: + Present their artwork + Meet potential partners for new projects (TV stations, production companies, distributors, filmmakers, choreographers, etc.) + Have direct contact with decision-makers in the TV world and receive immediate feedback from highly respected experts, festival curators, representatives of media and art institutions, and artists from all over the world + Exchange ideas and views with like-minded people internationally + Participate in the ‘dancescreen Pitching Session’: a valued format for project development, which fosters the development of co-productions by creating space for contacts, discussions and negotiations.

IMZ ON TOUR IMZ DANCESCREEN ON TOUR The motivation behind this unique, non-profit and entirely non-commercial initiative is bringing dance films to a wider public and providing exposure beyond the festival circuit for the audio-visual capture of dance. The creation of the initiative dates back to 1999, when the IMZ in association with the SK Culture Foundation, Cologne, decided to create an archive offering dancescreen winning and nominated productions, curated programmes and highlights for a reasonable prize to festivals around the world to continue their global journey. The IMZ holds the rights for non-commercial bookings for all listed dance films. IMZ WORLD MUSIC FILMS ON TOUR Within the non-profit initiative World Music Films On Tour, the IMZ aims at bringing excelACTIVITY REPORT 2016
lent world music films that have been screened at WOMEX to a wider public and make films known beyond all borders. The IMZ offers a unique selection of films to various non-commercial festival organisers and cultural institutions around the world to a reasonable price. The motivation behind the initiative is on the one hand to support world music filmmakers in promoting and distributing their artwork around the planet and on the other hand to make these films available even for small festivals, conferences, and other events having restraint budgets. With the initiative World Music Films On Tour, the IMZ is able to further and follow more intensively its mission to support music and dance in the audio-visual media.
