ACTIVITY REPORT 2015

DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS

THE YEAR 2015 WAS A VERY IMPORTANT, EXCITING, BUT ALSO TOUGH ONE FOR THE IMZ INTERNATIONAL MUSIC + MEDIA CENTRE: The 2nd edition of our own trade-fair for performing arts films, the Avant Première Music + Media Market in Berlin was a great success with 550 films presented at the Avant Première Screenings, 400 participants and 300 Open House visitors from more than 30 countries worldwide. Thanks to all dedicated IMZ members and friends who have contributed also this year – together we have created a Music and Media Market focusing on serious music, opera and dance of all genres – unique in the world today. But 2015 was also a challenging year – like almost every organization working in the cultural field – also IMZ is under pressure to finance its activities and goals. In 2015 we had to reshape some activities connected to participation in other festivals and events and our hard working team in the IMZ office in Vienna has invested a lot of time in fundraising activities and applications. But also this year we created a jury for the International Semi-Final Judgings of the International Emmy®, we curated Open Air Film Festivals for the general public in Vienna, Špilberk and Yekaterinburg, industry film screenings and a very successful 3rd edition of the IMZ Academy at ITF Golden Prague Festival. Also very important is the IMZ website and newsletter which provides all members with important information about the market and interesting news. I would use this opportunity to thank all trustworthy and valuable cooperation-partners for having once again made an important contribution to promoting and fostering the cause of the IMZ. Therefore, on behalf of the IMZ board members and our hard-working IMZ team in Vienna: Thank you for another wonderful year! We are now looking forward to seeing you at the 3rd and larger edition of Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin 2016, and don’t forget to take part also in the upcoming dancescreen festival in London 9-12 June. Best wishes Arild Erikstad, IMZ President

The 2015 edition of Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin presented an edition of records: 400 participants from all over the world and 300 Open House visitors joined the largest international trade fair for music and dance films and the international cultural film industry. The Avant Première Screenings presented 550 film productions by 70 international companies from 30 countries. Hosted by the IMZ, attended by the stars of the scene and designed by experts and decision makers, it provides a customised four-day programme addressing the industry’s needs: it is the coproduction market for TV and film production, distribution, broadcasting and the creative industries, providing specific resources and connecting protagonists to broaden business outlooks. It is the professional network for experts and young talents who work to promote the performing arts by audio-visual media. AVANT PREMIÈRE SPECIAL SCREENINGS: STARS AT BERLINER PHILHARMONIE In 2015 we proudly welcomed tenor Plácido Domingo, conductor Daniel Barenboim and stage director Philipp Stölzl to Berliner Philharmonie. The 2Cellos, Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser, rocked the house with a live gig introducing their latest film release of 2Cellos - Live at Arena Pula. The new kid on the block in the film industry, Berlin-based artist Friedrich Liechtenstein promoted Super Life - a portrait about his unique artistic career. EuroArts International presented The Pianist Menahem Pressler - The Life I Love - a moving portrait of the renowned pianist.

PROMOTING YOUNG TALENT: AVANT PREMIÈRE AND BERLINALE TALENTS 2015 saw growing numbers of first time visitors, especially among young film professionals. As part of IMZ’s focus and project series to support up-and-coming talents in art film productions, 2015 launched a cooperation with Berlinale Talents. Like that aspiring filmmakers made their entry to the international performing arts film industry participating in technical workshops performed on the TiME Lab by Fraunhofer HHI or using exclusive coaching sessions and a new coproduction format at Avant Première: the One-onOne Expert Sessions. MARKET EXPANSION: THE EUROPEAN FILM MARKET The European Film Market, the business hub of the Berlin International Film Festival, and Avant Première continued to join forces and invited participants of both events to access another at reduced entrance fees. Avant Première participants eased into the mood for music and the arts with the opening Lunch Concert at Berliner Philharmonie. A panel series invited influential figures to discuss current industry trends and the dynamics of the branch - from pop music and film marketing to the rising challenges for traditional broadcasting formats. Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation celebrated the 150th anniversary of composer Jean Sibelius presenting two anniversary films and a festive evening gathering at the Finnish Embassy Berlin.

FILM FESTIVAL AT WIENER RATHAUSPLATZ Running since a quater of a century, 65 nights this year, a 300m2-screen, new sitting arrangements for 2000 people and yet another record: 860,000 visitors who enjoyed unforgettable moments and real summer heat – looking back at the 2015 edition of this unique event, we say a huge thank you to everybody who made the amazing Rathausplatz-experience possible – audiences, colleagues and partners! REMEMBERING TRADITION Naming only few, we saw, faithful to tradition, the 2015 New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Zubin Mehta; we enjoyed such classics as the ballet Sleeping Beauty – with the Paris Opera Ballet starring Aurélie Dupont and Manuel Legris – the movie La Bohème and the opera performance L’Elisir D’Amore both with Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón, the concert of the Three Tenors In Rome; classics in other genres such as September Songs – The Music of Kurt Weill, Elvis Presley’s 1968 Comeback Special, Elton John in Las Vegas, Queen’s Hungarian Rhapsody, Bob Marley’s Uprising Live from Dortmund… HONOURING GREAT ONES Of course, we took the chance to celebrate many outstanding artistic calendar days, such as Tchaikovsky’s 175th birthday – not only with Sleeping Beauty but also with A Swan Lake, star choreographer Alexander Ekman’s new, extraordinary and Norwegian take on Swan Lake, or Jean Sibelius’ 150th birthday – with a ravishing performance from the Royal Concertgebouw with conductor Andris Nelsons and violin deity Anne-Sophie Mutter. For Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday, we chose his Concert For The Americas from the Dominican Republic,

and Pierre Boulez’ 90th birthday was honoured in a recording from 2010 – with the maestro conducting the Cleveland Orchestra in a truly mind-expanding Mahler performance.

4 JULY - 6 SEPTEMBER 2015 VIENNA, AUSTRIA www.filmfestival-rathausplatz.at

A PICK FOR EACH TASTE Covering all genres, the programme also included a brand new Show Boat from the San Francisco Opera, Cole Porter’s Kiss me, Kate shot in the Komische Oper Berlin, Walt Disney’s magical Fantasia, a highlight for the younger fans as well as five animated operas plus Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. In addition, there was a new interpretation of Rameau’s comic opera Platée, the impressive Concert de Paris recorded under the Eiffel Tower and Cinderella under the baton of Philippe Jordan. For those who like it jazzy in the universe of world music we featured Nigel Kennedy and Richard Galliano, The Rosenberg Trio, Chick Corea, Hubert von Goisern, Omara Portuondo a.o. BIRTHDAY SPECIALS As a festival birthday gift the audience was offered twice the possibility of choosing one out of three movies; thus Depeche Mode Live In Berlin and Elton John – One Million Dollar Piano enchanted their fans! And finally, to have it really festive towards the end, a special treat was prepared on 4 September: a broadcast of Rigoletto directly from the Vienna State Opera starring conductor Evelino Pidò and, in the leading parts, Ambrogio Maestri, Aleksandra Kurzak and Celso Albelo. After the show, the artists appeared on the Festivals’s stage to greet their fans and take a bow! A truely exciting end of this 25th edition.
