IMZ Avant Première Screenings At Midem 28 – 31 January 2012, Cannes, France

In a nearly three-decade-long tradition, the IMZ once again had the possibility to set the Avant Première Screenings event at midem. In Auditorium A – a true cinema hall with a massive screen, sophisticated technical equipment and more than 300 seats – IMZ members had the opportunity to let their fellow members as well as an interested audience take a glance at their latest productions. Over a period of four days, no fewer than 52 companies presented their show reels, including a record number of altogether 404 productions of classical, world music and jazz as well as classical ballet and contemporary dance, to a rapt and even bigger audience than in previous years. The customary IMZ stand, with its breathtaking sea view of the bay of Cannes and of La Croisette, was, as always, a top draw for visitors to meet with colleagues and negotiate with partners. For the first time the IMZ Opening and Networking Cocktail, held on Saturday, 28 January 2012 at the IMZ stand, was organized in cooperation with ReedMIDEM and was open also to non-IMZ-members, attracting nearly 200 people. Chris Hunt, president of the IMZ, Cornelia Much from ReedMIDEM and Bernd Hellthaler from EuroArts International were proud to welcome maestro Valery Gergiev as a special guest of the cocktail. As a novelty in 2012 and thanks to a co-operation with EuroArts International, the IMZ was able to complement the Avant Première Screenings 2012 by including the screening of 3D show reels in a special 3D screening space at the IMZ stand. Another highlight was the première screening of the movie „Music in the Air“. A documentary about the history of classical music on screen, on the occasion of the IMZ’s 50th anniversary celebrated in 2011. The Avant Première Screenings are a yearly IMZ event in collaboration with midem where the world’s leading producers of fine programmes on culture and the arts present their latest productions. It is a market for: • programme purchasers in search of high-quality audio-visual programmes on culture, the performing arts, music and dance • for producers with an interesting project for which they need coproduction partners • for programme suppliers/distributors who want to present their latest audio-visual programmes on culture, the performing arts, music or dance to the programme purchasers of international television stations • for film festival programmers looking for an opportunity to get a comprehensive overview of the latest trends in dance and music films • for editors or journalists who want to keep abreast with the trends in the fields of culture, the performing arts, music or dance. www.avantpremiere.at

ICMA Award Gala 2012 15 May 2012, Nantes, France

30 May – 2 June 2012, Munich, Germany

The ICMA Award Gala 2012 at La Cité in Nantes, France, hosted by the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and its music director John Axelrod, has been a big success. After the Award Ceremony, a Gala Concert featuring ICMA winners enthused an audience of 1,500 in La Cité's Grand Auditorium.

The year 2012 marked the inauguration of an international forum for classical and art music: Classical:NEXT. An event exclusively dedicated to classical music – for all sectors and on an international level – aiming to create cross-sector networks to negotiate new solutions for the challenges facing classical music professionals.

During its General Assembly in Nantes, the Jury of which the IMZ is a member welcomed as a new member the Russian weekly Kultura.

An IMZ film programme complemented the Classical:NEXT jury-selected conference and live showcases. Two days of screenings, eight films in full length and an enthusiastic audience of both Classical:NEXT delegates and non-business visitors.

As for the Awards of 2013: The Ceremony and Gala Concert will be hosted by the Orchestra La Verdi conducted by John Axelrod. The names of the winners will be published in January 2013. The Jury also announced that the ICMA Gala 2014 will take place during the renowned Beethoven Festival in Warsaw, organised by Elżbieta Penderecka.

From 30 May to 2 June, international professionals from all sectors of the classical music scene gathered at the Gasteig in Munich for the first edition of this annual event – festivals, arts presenters, publishers, labels, music educators, concert halls, promoters, media, producers and, of course, the classical music artists. We are looking forward to the next edition in Vienna in 2013! www.classicalnext.com

Vienna Music Film Festival Yekaterinburg

Music Film Festival at Wiener Rathausplatz

2 – 13 July 2012, Yekaterinburg, Russia

30 June – 2 September 2012, Vienna, Austria

The third edition of the Vienna Music Film Festival in Yekaterinburg was initiated and supervised by the IMZ and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow and very successfully implemented by the Austrian Honorary Consulate in Yekaterinburg in cooperation with various local partners and sponsors. Open air, free of charge and combined with a food and beverage area following the concept of the Music Film Festival at Wiener Rathausplatz in Vienna (Austria), in 2012, the Vienna Music Film Festival in Yekaterinburg took place from 2 – 13 July, in front of the Ural Federal University. The programme curated by the IMZ included operas and concerts such as „Don Pasquale“, „Dove è Amore è Gelosia“, „Andrea Bocelli – Live in Central Park“, „The Best of Pavarotti and Friends“, „New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic 2012“, „Manon“, „Operavox – Animated Operas“, „Cinderella“, „Carmen“…

In Vienna, summer ends when the world’s biggest open-air music film festival is closing. From 30 June – 2 September, a total of 47 productions were featured during the 65 festival evenings in front of Vienna’s City Hall for an audience of 625,000 people – a fine selection of music films, including classical, jazz, ballet and world music highlights. Like in the years before, people did enjoy not only the variety of music but also the wide range of culinary delights offered in the food area. As a novelty this year, one day of the Film Festival’s „classical“ week was dedicated to popular music gems. Thus we had it all: Anastacia and Tosca, Carmen and Katie Melua, Bryn Terfel and Elvis Presley, Andrea Bocelli and Benvenuto Cellini, Nutcracker and Scheherazade. In the opening film on 30 June, „Adele: live at the Royal Albert Hall“ gave the audience goosebumps. During the following weeks, people could not only watch classical operas but also productions like „The Phantom of the Opera“, „Baroque Celebrations“ as well as „Pavarotti and friends“. Furthermore, in the framework of the 50th anniversary of Vienna’s renowned film festival Viennale, the programme featured milestones of concert-film-making from D.A. Pennebaker’s „Monterey Pop“ and „Elvis Presley: ’68 Comeback Special“ to Martin Scorsese’s „Rolling Stones: Shine A Light“, an outstanding documentary on the concert they gave at New York’s Beacon Theatre. The concept turned out to be a success: More people than ever before came to watch and listen to the many musics in front of the City Hall and enjoyed the special atmosphere. Once again, in a splendorous celebration of tradition and the contemporary, the Film Festival turned the Wiener Rathausplatz into the vibrant heart of a city of music.

Pristina Open Air Culture Festival 1 – 3 October 2012, Pristina, Kosovo

For the first time, the IMZ, in co-operation with the EU-funded project „Culture for all“, implemented a classical music film screening at the new Pristina Open Air Culture Festival in Kosovo. The main goal of the young festival was to bring classical music closer to the people and present it on a public square where people can meet and socialise while listening to classical music concerts, watching operas and ballet performances. It took place at Mother Teresa Square right in the centre of the city. The festival opened on 1 October with a live performance of the Kosovo Philharmonic choir. Following this special moment, the audience was delighted by „Pavarotti – the Duets: Best of Pavarotti and Friends“. Furthermore, the programme, curated by the IMZ, contained classics like „La Traviata“ and „Operavox – Animated Operas: Das Rheingold, Rigoletto, Turandot“. The three classical days were a great success and very much appreciated by the public.

IMZ At 49th ITF Golden Prague 13 – 17 October 2012, Prague, Czech Republic

As in years past, the IMZ accompanied the 49th ITF Golden Prague festival and competition organising the Golden Prague Premieres and a workshop in co-operation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The screenings of the IMZ Golden Prague Premieres took place in the Small Hall of Žofín Palace and included the following programmes: IMZ Golden Prague Premieres I: „Flat Pack – The Musical“, SVT, Sweden. A musical „furniture saga“ about „the wonder of Sweden“, Ingvar Kamrad, the founder of IKEA. The score is by Erik Gedeon, who also directed the performance at Malmö Stadsteater. IMZ Golden Prague Premieres II: C(H)OEURS, EuroArts, Germany. Musical theatre by Alain Platel. For years, the tension between the group and the individual has been the central theme in Platel's performances. In C(H)OEURS he examines – together with his dancers and the Teatro Real choir – how „dangerously beautiful“ a group can be. Both productions were enthusiastically received. Lively discussions with the filmmakers/producers following the screenings underscored the success of the Golden Prague Premieres 2012.

On Tuesday, 16 October, an EBU and IMZ workshop was dedicated to „Rights management in the digital era“. Once again, the EBU and the IMZ decided to join forces to promote and strengthen the arts in the audio-visual media. After presentations by Peter Goethals (EBU), Malte Ludin (Tele München Gruppe), Pavlina Kvapilova (Česká televize) and Peter Maniura (BBC) the presenters and further panellists – Bernd Hellthaler (EuroArts Music), Chris Hunt (Classical TV Ltd.) and Lothar Mattner (WDR) were discussing the challenges and opportunities in social media for broadcasters and the private sector in a highprofile debate. Generally, the whole festival is open to anyone interested in high-quality music and dance programmes and films on the TV screen. In the festival's video library, festival participants have the chance to view all competition programmes submitted to the 49th ITF Golden Prague. 55 competitors from 24 countries presented 94 programmes in the international ITF GP competition. The longest programme submitted: 218’ („Julius Caesar“). And the Winners are… Grand Prix Golden Prague: „Lang Lang –The Art Of Being A Virtuoso“ (ZDF, Germany) Czech Crystal for Performing Arts: „John Cage: Journeys In Sound“ (ACCENTUS Music GmbH & Co. KG, Germany) Czech Crystal for Documentary: „The World Of Matthew Bourne“ (LeopardFilms, UK) Special Mention for extraordinary artistic achievement: „Soundbreaker“ (YLE, Finland) Czech Television Prize: „Schumann At Pier 2 – A Concert Film With Paavo Järvi And The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen“ (Deutsche Welle, Germany) Award of the Dagmar and Václav Havel’s Foundation VIZE 97: „Giuseppe Scarlatti: Dove è Amore è Gelosia – A Historical Reconstruction Of Opera Performance“ (Classart Classic, Germany) Audience Award: „Macbeth“ (Opus Arte, UK). IMZ World Music Film Screenings At WOMEX 2012 17 – 21 October 2012, Thessaloniki, Greece

For the first time in south-eastern Europe, with a lot of sunshine and warm summerlike nights, WOMEX successfully completed its 18th edition in Thessaloniki. The 11th edition of the IMZ World Music Film Screenings presented 17 productions – more than ever before! – and could, once again, raise the attendance figures – reaching a record of more than 500 attendees. The screenings were enthusiastically received by the industry insiders. The first day began with the Greek movie „Methexis“ – three rather different men sharing their very personal approach to expressing themselves through music. The next production, „Hubert von Goisern – Wirtshaustour“, took us on a trip through small taverns in Austria, where the outstanding world music artist Hubert von Goisern began his career. After that, „Sarabah“ – a movie about Sister Fa, a trailblazing Senegalese rap singer and activist on the rise, transported us to Senegal to show what it takes to fight for women’s rights in Africa. „Soundbreaker“ is a portrait of an exceptional accordionist from Finland and, at the same time, a movie revealing cinematography and drama in a distinctive Scandinavian way.

IMZ

Finally, „Georgia My Love“, an Israeli production, telling of the ambitions and struggle of two poor Georgian women, proud of their origins and trying to revive and establish Georgian culture. The second day took us on a road trip around the globe… tracing the story of the „Fellowship of the Drums“, a breath-taking rhythm adventure and of the „United States of Africa“ following African hip-hop pioneer Didier Awadi as he crafts an album paying tribute to the leaders of Black Consciousness. „The quest of Electrical Rites in Guinea Conakry“ depicts the curious story of how griots and sorcerers-fetishists have swapped their traditional instruments for distorted electric guitars... In „Embracing Voices“, Canadian musician Jane Bunnett contemplates her relationships, her career, and – both as an artist and as a woman – asks the universal question: what does it all mean. The day ended with the Greek movie „I heard god crying“: Fire-walkers in Greece, Shi’a Pakistanis during Arbaeen and Ashura in Syria, mourners in Albania… three very different groups related by their escape from everyday life, the transgression of limits, the affliction of ecstasy. The last screening day started with an invitation to a vivacious journey through the musical landscape of Istanbul with a movie called „RomanIstanbul“. „Go to Tuva“ – an ethno-rock road book and road movie took us as far as Siberia with the musicians Sainkho and Garlo. A change of topic came with the next film – „Worlds of Sounds: The Ballad of Folkways“ revealing how Folkways Records founder Moses Asch turned the music business model on its head. The afternoon then was dedicated to „El Gusto“ – the moving story of the reunion and reconciliation of a group of Muslim and Jewish musicians fifty years after their separation during the Algerian Civil War. With „Mawaca – Songs of the Forest“ we were heading to Amazonia to discover the musical traditions of six different peoples and the wonderful interpretations of this music by the band Mawaca, before we returned to Europe with „Eastern Voices“ – a documentary on East meeting West at the Morgenland Festival Osnabrück 2009 – an encounter between the occidental and Middle East musical traditions. At the end, „The Endless Journey“ introduced us to Niger’s outlying schools where children are inspired to value their cultural heritage by meeting musicians who have travelled with their music around the world. All in all, WOMEX recorded 2,200 delegates from 90 countries, 1,200 companies, 245 stands, 20 conference sessions, 61 showcase acts from 50 countries and of course 17 IMZ-curated films. This is what it takes to be the most important professional market for world music... For those who missed it, it is not all lost yet! See the screening selection and browse through all submitted movies on www.worldmusicfilms.com. Finally, many of the movies screened in the framework of the IMZ World Music Film Screenings at WOMEX 2012 will be part of our nonprofit initiative World Music Films on Tour. www.worldmusicfilms.com www.womex.com

WORLD MUSIC FILMS ON TOUR

DANCE SCREEN ON TOUR

The „World Music Films on Tour“ movies have travelled to quite some exciting destinations during 2012 and we wish to thank all the old and new bookers for their commitment to World Music Films!

Bringing dance films to a wider public and providing exposure beyond the festival circuit for dance in film and video, this is the motivation for dance screen on tour, a unique, non-profit and entirely non-commercial initiative created in 1999 by the IMZ in association with the SK Culture Foundation, Cologne.

The journey began in Belgium at the Centre for World Cultures Zuiderpershuis in Brussels. Next destination was Helsinki and the World Village Festival. The two following stops were in the Netherlands for the Music Meeting in Nijmegen and Belgium for the Recyclart Festival in Brussels. The Palantír Film Foundation in Hungary had its first time booking, as well as the Ulsan World Music Festival in South Korea. From there, a direct turn to the USA, to the International Lens Film Series in Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. Finally, two stops that seem to become mandatory: Plai Festival in Timisoara, Rumania and the Festival Porta in Riga, Latvia. World Music Films on Tour provides the opportunity to look beyond the familiar. For those curious to explore the entire world’s musical traditions and experience the diversity of our fascinating planet, this is a journey to exciting destinations. Bringing World Music in film and video to a wider public, in various locations around the world, that’s the motivation behind this non-commercial distribution project created in 2006 by the IMZ in co-operation with WOMEX. Aimed at organisers of music festivals, concerts or any kind of world music events, World Music Films on Tour offers a unique selection of world music documentaries and concert recordings.

Following on from the successful dance screen 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2010 at Cinedans, the winning and nominated productions, curated programmes as well as a selection of former dance screen highlights will continue on its global path. In 2012, dance screen on tour was guest at the Oper Graz in Austria for several Tanz Nite events. „Stronger“, „Shadowed“, „Slow Dance“, „Dos Ambientes“ and „Pito“ have already been presented throughout the year and yet, there are more to come. In March, the three festival days of the Tanzfilmfestival Luzern in Switzerland included „Horizon of Exile“, „An Ant“ and „Admit one“. Up north in Norway, three films from dance screen on tour were booked for the Public Art Screen Festival. „Stronger“, „Duo“ and „There is a place“ were shown in a loop during the summer months June, July and August in various public spaces open for everyone.

IMZ / ICMP/ Opera Europe Meetings

In October 2011, for the first time ever, representatives of ICMP (International Confederation of Music Publishers), Opera Europa, the IMZ, publishers and lawyers from Europe and the USA came together for a promising meeting to discuss the status quo of the publishing rights and media law situation. Followed by further encounters and conference calls, it looks very much like there is a certain common understanding within all involved parties for the need of taking action. Bernd Hellthaler (EuroArts) participates on behalf of the IMZ and aimes at improving the situation as well as creating new partnerships.

Music In The Air A History Of Classical Music On Television A documentary to celebrate 50 years of IMZ by Reiner E. Moritz

During the last 70 years, television has undergone dramatic changes; from black and white to colour, from a small screen to home cinema, from mono sound to stereo and surround sound. And it has done a lot to popularize classical music, in the best and in the worst sense. Classical music has been a part of the programme mix right from the beginnings of television. „Music In The Air“ features exclusive insights behind the scenes reflecting statements by directors like Brian Large, Christopher Nupen and Andy Sommer, controllers like David Attenborough and Roger Wright as well as producers and, of course, the work of many more musicians. „Music in the Air“ would not have been possible without the generous help of many friends and IMZ members who donated clips, facilities and their time. We would like to offer special thanks to Nicolas Auboyneau of France 2 who, from very early on, committed his channel and to Bernhard Fleischer who made available film crews when needed. And you might also recognize the voice of John Hurt who reads the commentary.

Up to now, „Music in the Air“ has been broadcasted in several countries not only in Europe but also overseas. ERR – Estonian Public Broadcasting, NRK – Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, RTV Slovenija, Yleisradio – The Finnish Broadcasting Company, SVT Sveriges Television, SBS Australia and Sky Network Television Limited have booked or broadcasted the programme. For further information, please contact Heike Connolly heike.connolly@poorhouseintl.co.uk The IMZ is happy to co-operate with Arthaus Musik GmbH who took over the distribution of „Music in the Air“ on DVD and Blu Ray. www.arthaus-musik.com
