Dear Members and Friends, Let us use the editorial of the IMZ Activity Report 2013 to take a look back at the events, connections and discoveries that marked IMZ’s 2013. It has been a very eventful and exciting year. Together with our long-standing co-operation partners – the City of Vienna, the Austrian Honorary Consulate in Yekaterinburg, the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow, the International Academy of Television, Arts & Sciences, the ITF Golden Prague Festival, WOMEX and Classical:NEXT – we have once again organized, and celebrated, a good deal of eye-catching and impactful events. There are the Avant Première Screenings together with midem in Cannes, various open-air music film festivals for a general public on the one hand and film screenings for the industry on the other hand, the International Semi-Final Judgings for the International Emmy®, the 1st edition of our IMZ Academy, and many more… We are proud of and grateful for another year of fruitful and interesting co-operations, which have once again made an important contribution to promoting and fostering the cause of the IMZ. Furthermore, we owe thanks to our new colleagues and various new partners: The cities of Barcelona, Sochi, Iasi, Osaka, the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles, and the Zurich Festival Wagner Greenhouse, for which we e.g. curated made-to-measure film festival programmes; the San Francisco Dance Film Festival, for the great pleasure of jointly organizing dance screen 2013 in San Francisco; the European Video Dance Heritage project, an important new partner we brought on board with the joint objective of setting up a unique European audio-visual dance memory. Last but not least, my heartfelt thanks go to all friends and members of the IMZ family. Together with your support and dedication we advance the arts in the audio-visual media, keeping it kicking – with music and dance. Thanks to your support and due to our joint efforts we are heading for another eventful IMZ year, initiating a new era with the exciting 1st edition of the Avant Première 2014 MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET BERLIN from 8 – 12 February 2014 in Berlin! Therefore, on behalf of the IMZ board members and our hard-working and creative IMZ team in Vienna: Thank you for a wonderful year! We look forward to working with you and seeing you again at one of our IMZ events in 2014! Best wishes Arild Erikstad President

Avant Première Screenings At midem

© IMZ

26 – 29 January 2013 | Cannes, France The IMZ started off the year 2013 with a very satisfactory 29th Avant Première event at midem, the Marché international de l’édition musicale in Cannes. A productive Directorate as well as Board meeting was followed by the announcement of the new IMZ President Arild Erikstad (NRK). As in the past couple of years, the IMZ could hold its most important annual events, the Avant Première Screenings, in a spot-on cinema hall with a massive screen, sophisticated technical equipment and more than 300 seats. Avant Première Screenings give all Full and Affiliate IMZ Members the opportunity to present their latest TV or cinema productions to a professional audience of distributors, buyers, producers and possible partners by presenting trailers as a synopsis of their work. Over a period of four days, no fewer than 52 companies presented their show reels, including a record number of altogether 413 of the most recent cultural film productions of classical music, pop, world music and jazz as well as contemporary dance and classical ballet. The IMZ stand was positioned at its traditional and prominent location, with a dazzling sea view. As always it was a lively centre of attraction for all IMZ members and a busy venue for many productive meetings. Thanks to all those who contributed to this successful Avant Première edition in Cannes! www.avantpremiere.at

Film Festival At Wiener Rathausplatz 29 June – 1 September 2013 | Vienna, Austria

9

The famous open-air Film Festival in front of Vienna’s City Hall was again put together by the IMZ. During 65 summery evenings highlights from the fields of classical music, jazz, world music and pop starred on screen. Adults as well as children from all various backgrounds and cultural interests were amazed by the yearly transformation of the square into a free open-air cinema and a trendy gourmet hotspot with culinary specialties from all around the world.

With a 300m2-screen, a state-of-the-art sound system and the newest technical features the festival can be proud of fantastic technical equipment. The nonpareil Rathausplatz experience was completed by Sunday Jazz Brunches, the new DJ Lounge, on-stage concerts of the Jazzfest, a performance by the Vienna Philharmonics’ brass and percussion ensemble and special guests from the Volksoper Vienna and Wiener Staatsoper.

More than 700,000 music enthusiasts enjoyed amazing screenings and live transmissions featuring Jonas Kaufmann, Plácido Domingo, Rolando Villazón, Cecilia Bartoli and many more. The programme celebrated classical highlights like Richard Wagner’s 200th anniversary with the entire screening of The Ring, Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th anniversary with seldom shown pieces and the grand Rudolf Nureyev’s 75th anniversary screening his mastery dancing. Two live transmissions – Mussorgsky’s Opera Boris Godunow, brought to the audience in Vienna from Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, and Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail, produced by Servus TV, coming from the special location of Hangar-7 in Salzburg – thrilled the audience. All lovers of jazz and pop found their highlights as well: Crowning the combination of opera, operetta, ballet, world music and jazz, this year’s programme also included concert films featuring Die Toten Hosen, Hubert von Goisern, Philipp Poisel, Paul McCartney, Norah Jones, Joe Bonamassa, Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper. Musical fans felt their heartbeats going up with Flat Pack – The Musical and kids of all ages got a kick out of the animation-film version of Prokofiev’s musical tale of Peter and the Wolf or the black-humour-ballet Max and Moritz.

For the last evening we kept a treasure, the screening of Tosca attended live by opera diva Angela Gheorghiu! Gheorghiu is not the first wellknown star visiting the Film Festival: In the past few years, celebrities like Plácido Domingo, Barbara Frittoli, Renate Holm, Ioan Holender, Christian von Weber, Robert Meyer or the Wiener Sängerknaben were stopping by this high-quality festival.

It strives to share the different European experiences and to transfer knowledge and best practices related to the preservation and dissemination of video dance in order to establish norms and technical standards and to unify practices. Finally, it wants to ensure better visibility and circulation of video dance in Europe in order to set up a European audio-visual dance memory. Kick-off event to the two-year project was the opening conference from 13 – 15 November 2013 at Tanzhaus nrw in Düsseldorf, Germany, with speakers and participants from throughout Europe.
