ACCENTUS MUSIC walks of life as for instance with Elektra and Die Frau ohne Schatten is more than remarkable.”
ACCENTUS Music Back At NCPA
Length: 45 min. A production of 3B-Produktion GmbH, ZDF/3Sat and Unitel. Distribution: C Major Entertainment.

On the occasion of Richard Strauss’ 150th birthday, the conductor Christian Thielemann reflects on his personal relationship to the composer. The film by Andreas Morell, that will air on 3Sat on 8 June 2014, is an intensive portrait of the composer Strauss on the one hand and of Thielemann as interpreter on the other hand. It contains interviews with Thielemann, numerous archive recordings with Richard Strauss, observing rehearsals and concerts. Amongst others: Elektra, Rosenkavalier, Frau ohne Schatten, Heldenleben and Four last Songs.
New Releases At ACCENTUS Music
Of course, Christian Thielemann is mainly interested in Strauss as conductor and composer. But furthermore the human being Strauss, the artistic director and the festival founder are part of the documentary film. His high-flying career and the bourgeois life in his Garmisch villa on the other hand are full of contradictions and conflicts. Christian Thielemann reflects on visiting Strauss’ home: “You still see the beer mugs, you may imagine the bourgeois person living here, sleeping in starched linen, playing cards, and of course he would be enjoying a really good Sunday’s roast. And that this composer would then drift off to such remote

BEL AIR MEDIA Brokeback Mountain

Long-awaited opera world premiere Brokeback Mountain by Charles Wuorinen based on the short story of the same title by Annie Proulx took place at Teatro Real Madrid in January 2014. The overwhelming strength of the story, the roughness of the writing, the greatness of the mountainous landscapes and the authenticity of the characters, who get involved in a forbidden and passionate love, characterize this opera in two acts created betwen 2008 and 2012, after Gerard Mortier had arranged the commissioning of the work. Live broadcasted in HD from Teatro Real Madrid. Produced by Bel Air Media in co-production with the Teatro Real and TVE (National Spanish Television).
Bandit's Daughter, was a three-act ballet pantomime created at the Paris Opera in 1857 with choreography by Joseph Mazilier and music adapted from Daniel Auber’s comic opera of the same name. Soon forgotten, the ballet was revived in 1981 with a brand new choreography by Pierre Lacotte for the Rome Opera, with Rudolf Nureyev as the 18th-century Italian bandit pretending to be an aristocrat, and Ghislaine Thesmar as his daughter Angela. Pierre Lacotte has created a new version of the ballet for the Bolshoi Theatre. Marco Spada will be broadcasted live to cinemas worldwide on 30 March 2014 from the Bolshoi Theatre. RUDOLF SAILER “Without music life would be an error.” (Friedrich Nietzsche) Rudolf Sailer, former President of the IMZ and father of dance screen, died on 19 January 2014. He was 82. Dedicating his life to the many artforms of music, Sailer has made a significant contribution to the vitality of Germany’s cultural landscape throughout his career. When he became Head of Theatre and Music with the German broadcasting organisation ZDF in 1991, the musicologist and drama expert, who had also studied the art of conducting under Hans Knappertsbusch, H.W. von Waltershausen, Günter Wand and as musical assistant of Georg Solti, motivated both philosophical and practical approaches of great knowledge to the art of presenting art on television. He brought the opera world and their brightest stars into German living rooms, convincing the elite of international music and music-theatre directors to work behind the TV camera. He installed key players like Jean Pierre Ponnelle and Götz Friedrich, Christopher Nupen, Klaus Lindemann and Hugo Käch. From 1983 to 1986, Rudolf Sailer applied himself, his energy and vault of wisdom, to establishing the IMZ as the worldwide network for composers, publishing companies, radio and television broadcasting organisations, producers and directors. In 1985, he took over the management of Alte Oper Frankfurt, marking an era of international open-mindedness, that encouraged many opera and concert projects music lovers still enthuse about today. With ZDF and 3Sat right on the ground for memorable moments in live-broadcasting history… When you think of Rudolf Sailer now, you will surely have in mind, in addition to your personal memories, the memory of the decision maker as a philantropist whose outstanding personality always made him chose encouragement rather than reservation as a point of view. In every respect, Rudolf Sailer was a phenomenal motivator of excellence. His passing left a void.

STIMMEN STIMMEN GEGENSTIMMEN A film By Michael Hudecek Produced By GAMSfilm&music The film Stimmen Stimmen Gegenstimmen will be shown first at the Diagonale Filmfestival in Graz, Austria | 18 and 23 March 2014. A colorful amateur choir sings to support values like human rights, diversity of opinions and non-violence. Michael Hudecek in this film accompanies the creation of a new programme, the rehearsals and the internal discursive process that set this choir apart from others. In doing so, the film discovers the challenges of democracy. Gegenstimmen is a politically committed fifty-part amateur choir from
Vienna. They are organized direct democratically and they state about themselves: “We direct ourselves against war, fascism, violence and oppression. We ask questions and sing out against the lack of interest and against keeping quiet. We prefer to melodize topics that are easily (or even willingly) disregarded in common discussions.” The lyrics were written by Bärbel Mende-Danneberg, Alfred Komarek and Heinz Rudolf Unger. The choir’s rehearsal director Erke Duit also composed the music for the concert programme. www.gams.cc

Ten Live Transmissions, Including Seven Operas New To The Series The Met: Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning series of live transmissions to more than 2,000 movie theatres in 65 countries around the world, will feature ten operas in the 2014-15 season, including all six new productions in the Met season. All ten performances, transmitted live from the Met stage, will feature the world’s finest singers, conductors, and theatrical artists. The six new productions include three repertory favorites – Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Lehár’s operetta The Merry Widow and the verismo double bill Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci – each of which has its first Live in HD transmission in the coming season. Three operatic rarities having Met premieres in 201415 will also be transmitted as part of the series: John Adams’s modern masterpiece The Death of Klinghoffer; Tchaikovsky’s lyrical fairy tale Iolanta, starring Anna Netrebko in the title role and presented in a double bill with Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle; and Rossini’s bel canto gem La Donna del Lago, starring Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Flórez in the leading roles.
Met Music Director James Levine, who returns to a full performing schedule in 2014-15, will lead the HD transmission of Le Nozze di Figaro as well as the first HD performance of an opera with which he has long been associated, Wagner’s brilliant human comedy Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Three of the series’ most popular operas will return with new casts. Anna Netrebko sings Lady Macbeth for the first time at the Met in Verdi’s Shakespearean tragedy. Bizet’s Carmen returns with Anita Rachvelishvili, and Vittorio Grigolo sings the title role of the poet who is four times unlucky in love in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann. The HD season will begin on Saturday, 11 October 2014 at 12.55p.m. ET with Verdi’s Macbeth. For further details, local start times and rebroadcast information, please visit www.metopera.org/hdlive
