LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA – A New Beginning

Andris Nelsons is one of the most sought-after conductors on the international scene today. Earlier this year, he conducted the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA in a deeply moving Memorial Concert in honour of the late Claudio Abbado. On 15 August, he will open the 2014 Summer Festival with the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, the Bavarian Radio Choir and alto Sara Mingardo. The concert programme, featuring works by Brahms, had been conceived by Abbado himself: “In this way, the memory of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA’s founder remains alive in the Festival’s artistic programming, too” (Michael Haefliger, Executive and Artistic Director of LUCERNE FESTIVAL).

The Berliner Philharmoniker and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL – a very fine tradition, since the orchestra has been a regular guest for over five decades. Following the spirit of their previous motto Moving to Modern Times, the Berliner and Rattle return in 2014 with yet another programme featuring early-20th-century modern classics: Rachmaninoff ’s Symphonic Dances and Stravinsky’s L’Oiseau de Feu.

Honouring Gluck’s 300th anniversary, Arthaus Musik releases this special edition on Blu-ray filled with three prize-winning productions of his most popular operas. In Memoriam Vladimir Horowitz In November 2014, the musical world will be solemnising the 25th anniversary of Vladimir Horowitz’s death. On this occasion, Clasart Classic redirects its focus on two outstanding concerts with this exceptional artist:

Jean-Philippe Rameau Platée

“Laurent Pelly’s staging of Platée is an exhilarating display of gags and West Side Story dance routines mixed in with satirical rap... Marc Minkowski conducting the excellent Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble was the instigator of a sparkling orchestral fête” (Opera Now). Horowitz Live! – Horowitz Plays Rachmaninoff

100 years ago, Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen was staged for the first time at the Arena in Verona. Today, in front of the imposing backdrop of the Roman amphitheatre, Franco Zeffirelli‘s opulent production is conducted by Henrik Nánási and sung by an international cast of excellent singers: Ekaterina Semenchuk in the title role, Irina Lungu as Micaela, Carlo Ventre as Don Jose, Carlos Alvarez as Escamillo. Live recorded in HD at Arena di Verona. Produced by Bel Air Media in co-production with NHK, ZDF and Fondazione Arena di Verona.

After his – also by Rachmaninoff himself – acclaimed interpretation of the composer’s Third Piano Concerto fifty years earlier, in 1978, Horowitz electrified his audience once again with this monumental work. Accompanied by the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, he gave an unforgettable performance, which received five Emmy Awards® and is considered by many to be the greatest interpretation of the work on video.

Live From The Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam: Mariss Jansons & Yuja Wang

Janáček’s The Cunning little Vixen – A Making Of This half-hour documentary is about the making of a ground-breaking production of Janáček’s opera which combines the Cleveland Orchestra directed by Franz Welser-Möst with live-action actors and cutting edge animations and projections. Director Yuval Sharon has crafted an at once bespoke and digital world where the human heads of singers blend with animated animal bodies on three 26-foot screens. The film tells the remarkable story of the coming together of classical music, opera, and 21st-century animation. www.tmg.de

The Chinese pianist Yuja Wang made her first appearance with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in September 2010 in a performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto. Then, with her performance in 2013, Yuja Wang “left the audience dumbfounded, scored a triumph and stole every heart” (NRC Handelsblad). She now returns with another Russian piano concerto in her fingers: Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto. Also on the programme: Rossini’s overture to La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) and Prokofiev’s monumental Symphony No. 5. Conductor: Mariss Jansons. Production: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. La Monnaie Opera House has ended its 2013-2014 season with an extraordinary opera production of Christoph Willibald Gluck's Orphée et Eurydice – presented in the French adaptation by Hector Berlioz. Stage direction was confided to Romeo Castellucci. A man of strong convictions, he adds a personal layer to any play or opera that goes through his hands transforming the work into an experience that cannot leave you indifferent. This time, he juxtaposes the ancient myth of Orpheus – in real time – with the real-life tragedy of a paralyzed young woman trapped in a locked-in syndrome. Orphée et Eurydice will be available in full on www.lamonnaie.be from Wednesday 9 to Tuesday 29 July 2014. www.lamonnaie.be

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the death of the iconic maestro Herbert von Karajan, ORF presents the most important works of the last decade of his life. Karajan is a synonym for musicality, perfection and passion. Comparable only to Enrico Caruso or Maria Callas, but with the exception that the conductor could eternally preserve a great part of his oeuvre thanks to the television era. His exceptional career is accompanied by recordings starting from his artistic beginnings; even the very young Herbert von Karajan is documented on film. His last decade was dedicated to the high-quality documentation of his most important works for future generations. The most popular events conducted by Karajan – such as Don Carlos of 1986, Don Giovanni of 1987, the amazing New Year's Eve Concerts in Berlin, the famous New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonics of 1987 complete his legacy. Creole is the only common local language in the former Portuguese colony Guinea Bissau, but it is still not the official language since the country’s independence in 1973. It is still Portuguese... Creole has been used to rebel against the settlers. It has become the language in which artists from different generations express their feelings and the social reality of the country. Windrose’s new music documentary Lantanda focuses on how artists promote this language as a cement of the national identity, through their songs.

Then Charles Lloyd retreated from the limelight, preferring to play his flute in the mountain forests of Big Sur. A tentative return to public service was made in the company of pianist Michel Petrucciani; the 1989 ECM recording Fish Out Of Water, signaled a new beginning.
