ARTHAUS MUSIK

Release On DVD And Release on DVD: Blu-Ray: Zhu-Xiao Mei and the Mahler 9 With Riccardo Goldberg Variations Chailly And The Gewandhaus Orchestra

Guido Lukoschek The Language Of The Unknown – A Film About The Wayne Shorter Quartet

Zhu Xiao-Mei © Martin Jehnichen

This live recording of the composer’s last completed symphony is part of the Leipzig cycle of Mahler’s symphonies. It confirms once more the Gewandhaus Orchestra’s reputation as an exemplary ensemble for the performance of Mahler’s music. The highest level of performance culture combined with a sharply contoured, transparent, polished, and detailed manner of playing, plus infectious verve and an unmistakable sound characterized by a darkly golden color – these are qualities responsible for the Gewandhaus Orchestra’s international reputation. Since the time of Bruno Walter, the orchestra has developed a deep understanding of Mahler’s works, which in their collaboration with Riccardo Chailly has been continued. The DVD and Blu-ray are available from September 2014.

Zhu Xiao-Mei is one of the world's most celebrated interpreters of J. S. Bach's Goldberg Variations. For decades, she has been playing this masterpiece all over the world, proving that this universal music transcends boundaries. For the first time, her performance is documented on DVD: as a highlight of the 2014 Leipzig Bachfest, Zhu Xiao-Mei performed the Goldberg Variations next to Bach’s last resting place in the magnificent St. Thomas Church. This unique concert will be released in fall 2014, including Michel Mollard’s documentary. The return is the movement of Tao. Zhu Xiao-Mei and the Goldberg Variations. The film accompanies the pianist to the stillness of the French Alps, allowing a rare insight into the intellectual world of this fascinating musician and into her conception of Bach’s work.

The Language of the Unknown accompanies the great saxophonist Wayne Shorter and his band with a concert on 3 November 2012, in the Salle Pleyel in Paris and observes the effect of the music on their creators, who are normally much too busy with creating the new rather than to deal with music already played. The completion date of The Sounds of Sax, a documentary produced to celebrate the invention of the saxophone, has been postponed to July 2015 to coincide with Strasbourg’s World Saxophone Congress & Festival, which will take place from 9 to 14 July 2015. 2000 musicians from all over the world and open to every music style will give some 300 events in Strasbourg and Alsace. The film will tell the following story. Adolphe Sax, the Belgian creator of the instrument that bears his name, was born 200 years ago (November 1814). This brilliant inventor who lived in Paris was also a salesman & an adventurer of the industrial revolution who risked everything to establish the saxophone. This interesting instrument first ruined his creator before becoming successful after his death. It was used, for example, by famous composers such as Berlioz or Ravel as well as in all music genres. Narrated by leading London-based Saxophonist from Australia, Amy Dickson, The Sounds Of Sax uses footage and recent performances to show how classical music has evolved thanks to the saxophone.

IN MEMORIAM LORIN MAAZEL

© Molly M. Peterson

6 March 1930 (France) – 13 July 2014 (USA) American conductor, violinist and composer Lorin Maazel died at age 84. A former child prodigy, Lorin Maazel became one of the most powerful, brilliant and enigmatic conductors and music directors in Europe and the United States. He was the first American and the first Jew to take charge at Bayreuth in the post-war period. In 2008, he led the New York Philharmonic Orchestra on a ground-breaking visit to Pyongyang, North Korea. In Tokyo in 2010, he repeated his London marathon of 1988, conducting all nine Beethoven symphonies in a single 10-anda-half-hour concert. He had a long association with Vienna and with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, whose annual New Year’s Concert he directed on no fewer than eleven occasions, returning for the last time in 2009. Slowing down has never been the favourite pace of the maestro Maazel; in 2013 he conducted 111 concerts…

LAURELS & PRIZES

With Lorin Maazel we have lost a great musician with a keen eye for publicity who strode across the orchestral stage with the authority of knowledge, charisma and high-powered artistry. His work has become part of the lives of many members of the IMZ network. “[H]is performances could seem coolly fastidious and emotionally distant. Yet such performances were regularly offset by others that were fiery and intensely personalized.” The New York Times His artistic personality evoked strong feelings; he made us marvel at the intellectual enigmas of music – “The aim is to find a motion that responds to the need of a particular player at a particular moment. [...] There is no magic involved.” Lorin Maazel “I may be the last of the Romantics.” Lorin Maazel

EUROPEAN FESTIVALS ASSOCIATION – FESTIVAL BYTES BLOG: GLOCAL FESTIVAL COMMUNITIES "Every festival today faces the need to justify its existence. Festivals exist in a larger societal framework and have responsibilities, just like individual citizens or large corporations, for the development, openness and well-being of that society. As I travel across Europe, visiting a diverse array of festivals, I see they are all working on connecting the arts and the artists with people. They are bridging various agendas representing a ‘glocal’ struggle that most arts organisations experience nowadays: addressing global issues, engaging local communities, surprising citizens with new artistic discoveries and celebrating cultural heritage – all the while fighting for economic survival. But this needn’t be difficult as there is a vast wealth of experience across the sector adapting to trends and drawing from new ideas. The European Festivals Association, as an umbrella organisation for festivals across Europe and beyond, provides a platform for festivals from these various contexts to meet, network

and exchange their experiences. The result is that festival professionals can extend their horizons by engaging in new and fruitful collaborations. At EFA, we believe that by serving individual artists we serve the public. Festivals are inescapably part of a local community, be this geographic, cultural, social, political and so on.“ You can read the full essay by Kathrin Deventer, Secretary General of the European Festivals Association, on the blog Festival Bytes.
