Gottfried Helnwein & The Dreaming Child provides an insight into the work of the titular Austrian photo-realist painter, who turns 65 in October 2013. In summer the Albertina in Vienna will stage his hitherto largest retrospective in the German-speaking area.

In this production of Wagner’s final masterpiece Jonas Kaufmann, one of the most renowned Wagner tenors of our time, stars in the title role of the innocent who finds wisdom. He is surrounded by no one less than Katarina Dalayman, René Pape, Peter Mattei and Evgeny Nikitin. Daniele Gatti conducts. The premiere of this new production by the Canadian François Girard was unanimously hailed by the press. The New York Times praised the “postapocalyptic setting“ and the singers as “the best Parsifal cast available today”. MFO Harstad (Norway) To Become First Ever Safe Music Haven The Norwegian Musicians’ Union (MFO) presents the SafeMUSE project and the first ever Safe Music Haven On 12 February 2013, the city of Harstad (Norway), signed the first agreement with SafeMUSE, proclaiming itself the first ever Safe Music Haven.

Freemuse – the World Forum on Music and Censorship – is currently identifying eligible persecuted artists for the first residence period. “A milestone in our work for freedom of artistic expression and human rights” said Renée Rasmussen, President of the Norwegian Musicians’ Union. Too many musicians around the world are persecuted just for being musicians. The Freemuse Annual Statistics documented more than 100 violations in 2011: harassments, threats, stopped concerts, arrests, torture and murders. Since the 1990s, the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN) for persecuted writers has expanded worldwide, with 40 member cities. In 2011, MFO in cooperation with Freemuse, the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) and Nordic professional music organizations took the first steps towards the creation of a safe music havens scheme, aiming to protect freedom of artistic expression and democracy as well as to support persecuted musicians worldwide. The city of Harstad commits to host guest musicians for a 2-year period. In co-operation with the Troms County Council, it will facilitate the securing of adequate working conditions for the artists concerned. It will provide an environment where music creation and performance is free and safe, in line with the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The SafeMUSE project is supported by FIM.
