EDITORIAL Dear IMZ members,
IMZ is going new ways to open new perspectives. We are happy to invite you to join us for the next Avant Première Screenings in Berlin from 12 to 16 February 2014! Moving the Avant Première Screenings from Cannes to Berlin has challenged us to make an impactful decision, to which we have paid attention to the full extent. During various board meetings, as well as the last General Assembly on 27 January 2013, all the arguments for and against have been discussed. It became clear that an overwhelming majority was in favour of the Berlin option. Bringing the decision to MIDEM’s attention at a meeting in Cannes, followed by a second meeting at the MIDEM headquarters in Paris, finally lead to a new proposal to the IMZ. While the new offer moved some way towards a financially better deal for the IMZ, it left the fundamental questions surrounding the partnership unanswered. Considering the developments in broadcasting and the music and media industry as a whole, the IMZ sees a strong responsibility to create an improved framework for our activities. The main concern at the General Assembly was whether a continued partnership with MIDEM would offer sufficient space to do so. Our target is a more promising environment for the IMZ enabling new markets, new networks, new partners and new members. We are convinced that Berlin is just the right place. In the context of Berlin as a centre for the film industry the location holds possibilities for new audiences as well as cooperation arrangements. Coinciding with the Berlin Film Festival/Berlinale the Avant Première Screenings take place at a time of increased attention to film productions. We move to Berlin with a wide spread network of new partners following our mission to explore new markets and partnerships for the future of Avant Première. Our screening site will be Hotel Scandic at the heart of Berlin at Potsdamer Platz. NEW PRODUCTIONS Accentus Music New Release On DVD / Blu-Ray: Mahler 4 In April, Accentus Music releases Mahler’s 4th Symphony, performed by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Riccardo Chailly. Inspired by Chailly’s interpretation, the artist Neo Rauch created another painting for the Accentus Mahler cycle. His work Hohe Zeit will be featured on the DVD cover. In February, Accentus has continued recording the cycle with Symphony No.5, together with Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, performed by Lars Vogt.

Die Thomaner At Nashville Film Festival The documentary Die Thomaner – A Year in the Life of the St. Thomas Boys Choir Leipzig has been selected for the 2013 Nashville Film Festival, held 18 – 25 April. Isang Yun In North And South Korea Maria Stodtmeier has finished shooting her portrait of Isang Yun, a composer between two worlds, whose outstanding biography bridges both Koreas. The documentary, filmed both in the North and the South, is a co-production with ZDF/ARTE and is supported by Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung.
Clasart Classic Seventh Season Of Live Broadcasts From New York’s Metropolitan Opera Comes To Record-Breaking End The seventh season of the Met Live in HD, presented in Germany and Austria by Clasart Classic, ends with two highlights: The new production of Wagner’s Parsifal from the Metropolitan Opera starring Jonas Kaufmann and Händels Giulio Cesare starring Natalie Dessay. A record was broken at the broadcast of Rigoletto, with nearly 40,000 opera lovers filling 175 theaters in Germany and Austria to experience Verdi’s masterpiece with Diana Damrau, Piotr Beczala and Zeljko Lucic, an event that grossed over one million euros. Clasart Classic registered over 220,000 viewers during the 2012/2013 season, which represents an increase of nearly 15% in comparison with the previous year.

The Live in HD season kicks off on 6 October with a new production of Eugene Onegin, conducted by Valery Gergiev and starring Anna Netrebko, Piotr Beczala and Mariusz Kwiecien. With Borodin’s Prince Igor and Shostakovitch’s The Nose two other gems of Russian repertoire will be presented. Apart from the focus on Russia, the programme contains opera highlights such as Tosca, Rusalka, Werther, La Bohème and La Cenerentola.

NEW PRODUCTIONS EuroArts Die Zauberflöte Live From BadenBaden The main focus of the Easter Festival 2013, held for the first time with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, will be on Mozart’s The Magic Flute conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

The principal roles are sung by Ana Durlovski (Queen of the Night), Pavol Breslik (Tamino), Kate Royal (Pamina), Michael Nagy (Papageno) and Regula Mühlemann (Papagena). The Three Ladies are also portrayed by prominent performers, namely Annick Massis, Magdalena Kožená and Nathalie Stutzmann. José van Dam is the Narrator and the Canadian artist and seasoned opera director Robert Carsen is in charge of directing. Europa Konzert! EuroArts starts a Blu-ray release series of upconverted and intensely restored Europa Konzert titles: Beginning in April with the concerts from El Escorial (1992) and Meiningen (1994). Further titles will be released in the following months… The next Europa Konzert is just around the corner: On 1 May, the Berliner Philharmoniker – with Sir Simon Rattle and Magdalena Kožená – will celebrate the anniversary of their founding in Prague, where they’ve played in 1991, soon after the opening of the Eastern European countries, and in 1996 at the National Theatre. La Monnaie / De Munt La Dispute Last March, La Monnaie Opera House staged the world premiere of La Dispute, the second opera by Benoît Mernier. The Belgian composer collaborated closely with the legendary directors Karl-Ernst and Ursel Herrmann; with Ursel writing the libretto, based on the writings of Marivaux. La Dispute received raving reviews, especially for the witty stage design, and is to be seen on www.lamonnaie.be until 15 April.

All in all, a wonderful anniversary event celebrating 85 years of Radio Romania and the Romanian National Radio Orchestra…
The concert, organised by Russian Music Society and Radio Romania, was held in the framework of the Music Festival Martisor and was broadcasted live in Moldova and Romania. Yuri Botnari, voting member of the Grammy Academy, is developing a rich artistic activity with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. The link between him and this project is also a symbolic one: Born in Chisinau, the conductor originates from a Romanian-Russian family with artistic background.
The programme brought together three famous works drawing a beautiful artistic bridge between Romanian and Russian music: Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no.5, Rachmaninoff’s Concerto no.2 for piano and orchestra and Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody no.1. Special guest was the pianist Vladimir Ovchinnikov, who was recently invited to perform for her Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and to whom President Vladimir Putin has awarded the highest state distinction in music, People's Artist of Russia.

The documentary Karajan - The second Life by Eric Schulz is nominated in two categories of the prestigious Austrian ROMY TV Award: in the category Best TV documentary 2012 and in the category Best producer TV.

The film Karajan – The Second Life offers never-before-seen film footage and a fascinating look at the musical performances of the conductor Herbert von Karajan. Excerpts from private recordings of phone calls between the maestro and his sound engineer Günter Hermanns were exclusively analyzed for this film and provide an authentic insight into Karajan's work. The central question is: what will remain of Karajan, who made more recordings than anyone else, and his unprecedented ambitious artistic legacy. The European Music Council (EMC) together with the Scottish Music Centre are organizing the 2013 European Forum on Music which will take place from 18 – 21 April 2013 in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. The aim of this latest edition of the European Forum on Music will be to explore what role music and culture can play in this situation and to discuss latest trends and developments of the music sector in Europe. Sociomusicologist Simon Frith and Pete Wishart, Scottish MP and former member of the band Runrig have been confirmed as keynote speakers. Lynching
Your 2 Seconds Of Dance Filmmaker Mitchell Rose and choreographer Bebe Miller are creating a crowd-sourced dance-film entitled Globe Trot. They're looking for 100 filmmakers around the world to each shoot a non-dancer performing just two seconds of a two minute piece of choreography by Bebe. Most people can learn two seconds of even complicated dance steps. The filmmakers will send Mitchell their two second clip and he'll edit them all together into one seamless dance. New Rachel Davies Film + Interactive Film-Based Theatre Piece Looking For Production Partners Rachel Davies Film Ltd is currently researching and developing a largescale new work comprising two related elements – a film (30-minute documentary-performance) and an interactive film-based theatre piece for whole family engagement. The work is entitled They Tuck You Up Your Mum and Dad, and will be made during 2014. Catalan and Spanish dancers/choreographers Carme Martí and Elisa del Pozo team up once more with director Loránd János for Lynching, a danced homage to David Lynch’s red room. Lynching is a movement based intergenerational dialogue between two women: a mature and a young one, denouncing the fatality of the human being. Between young and old, time and space, light and shadow, birth and death, there is a constant metamorphosis of life. The director’s intention was to bring together two generations of strong dancers/choreographers, on one hand the young, restless energy of Elisa del Pozo, and on the other hand the mature professionalism of Carme Martí. This is director Loránd János´second common project with Elisa del Pozo, after creating EGO in 2011, where horror and dance genres where merged, and the third common project with Carme Martí (after TaBaLet, 2010 and Sueños (Dreams), 2012). Lynching, currently in postproduction, is an international co-production (with the participation of the Catalan Centre Cívic Barceloneta) and is produced by Ramón Oriola, David Canelo and Arnau Mas for Lorán Ipsum Films.
