Dear Members and Friends, We are facing a dramatic change in the film and music industry - we have OTT TV, alternative content in cinemas, VOD, specialist channels and a decreasing significance and future of physical distribution; the world of television, internet and cinema merges more and more, the difference between TV and cinema productions decreases, the importance of non-broadcasting activities like live events in cinemas or 3D projects, film festivals etc. increases remarkably – just to mention a few characteristics. We have had many intensive meetings and worked a lot before we now proudly can present the IMZ Avant Première 2014 MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET BERLIN taking place at the Scandic Hotel Berlin from 8 – 12 February 2014. Located just a few steps from the Berlinale International Festival and the European Film Market in Walter Gropius Bau, two big events that are taking place at the same time in Berlin. It is my pleasure to give you here in the September edition of the IMZ newsletter the entire overview and details to our new format of the well-known Avant Première Screenings. The four-day event with its core Avant Première Screenings is also including Talks, Panels, Networking opportunities supported by an extra Networking Lounge, possibilities to present your productions and companies in a Booth Area and Individual Presentation Rooms with the opportunity for Special Screenings. There will be unique side events like e.g. the screening of the restored silent film Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari with the Berliner Philharmoniker and, of course, the big Opening with Arte Lounge at Radialsystem Berlin and much much more! With this event we want to reach out to all the IMZ members, as well as to non-members and individual professionals. We are aiming to enhance networking and exchange between old and new partners and to set up an intersectoral event inviting people from different parts of the industry to join in. So we warmly invite all of you to come to Berlin in February and we ask as well for your help, contribution and support in promoting the event and spreading the word in your networks! Please invite publishers, possible coproducers and buyers, labels, distributors, partners from so-called new technologies like App-producers, iPhone or 3D, representatives from cinema chains or alternative content partners, foundations etc. Hoping to welcome all of you in Berlin; I send you very best wishes

IMZ Golden Prague Premières Autumn 2013 will be enriched by cultural activities and highlights! What are your plans in October? ITF Golden Prague will take place at Žofín Palace in Prague, Czech Republic, from 12 – 16 October 2013 and, of course, we will keep our tradition of the IMZ Golden Prague Premières there! We proudly present the 5 exciting and diverse programmes that have been selected for the IMZ Golden Prague Premières in 2013. The festival audience will have the unique opportunity to enjoy five films that could not be better: Hip Hop Swan Lake, produced by Anna&Paul Film&TV opens a new path towards Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece. The hip-hop take on Swan Lake includes intense scenes, innovative editing in a modern style, and original music as well as new rhythms and triple beats.
Les Salons De Musique Opus 5: Chilly Gonzales Invites Vincent Segal In The Palais De Tokyo, produced by Sombrero & Co in collaboration with TV Rennes 35 Bretagne, is an excellent concert of Chilly Gonzales, who is always passing by and merging all musical territories. In this remarkable music salon, he is playfully experimenting with the renowned cellist, Vincent Segal. Mahlermania – Nico And The Navigators, produced by EuroArts Music & RBB in collaboration with ARTE, offers a progressive outlook versus fear of the unknown, the bitterness of the outsider versus a yearning for greener grass, a manic drive versus self-absorption. Nico and the Navigators tackle the cosmos of Mahler's songs in a production of poetical and physical expression that endeavours to distil this sifting of senses for the stage.
Terezín – Refuge In Music, produced by NIGHTFROG GmbH For the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, is a documentary and a live concert which has grown out of the 2007 Deutsche Grammophon recording of the same title. Shot in Theresienstadt and London and instigated by the Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter it features music by Jewish composers during World War II and interviews with surviving ghetto-inmates. The Big Ballet, produced by RussiaKultura TV Channel, is the first contest for young ballet dancers in Russian television ballet history. Main targets of the project are the discovery of new ballet stars, giving young performers an opportunity to approve themselves by demonstrating perfect techniques and a dramatic talent, presenting a rich heritage of classical ballet as well as the best of modern choreography.

Film Festival At Wiener Rathausplatz 2013 What a wonderful summer we had with the Film Festival at Wiener Rathausplatz 2013! From 29 June until 1 September 2013 we spent together 65 nights of screenings and live-transmissions from classical music, pop, jazz, musical, ballet and world music watching the films on the 300m2 screen and enjoying the amazing effects of a top sound design in front of Vienna’s City Hall! 700,000 guests and visitors were joining us! We celebrated Richard Wagner’s 200th anniversary with the entire screening of The Ring, Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th anniversary with seldom shown pieces and Rudolf Nureyev’s 75h anniversary screening unique dancing in Swan Lake. Two live transmissions – from the Bayerische Staatsoper: Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov and from the special location of Hangar-7 in Salzburg: Mozart’s Die Entführung
aus dem Serail – the scallywag ballet Max and Moritz with guests from the Volksoper Wien and, of course, the “last night special” with Tosca and stars from the Staatsoper Wien were some of the finest events of this summer’s music scene life at Wiener Rathausplatz. But we also had great evenings with jazz and pop screenings… Die Toten Hosen Unplugged, Hubert von Goisern or Philipp Poisel, Paul McCartney, Joe Bonamassa, Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper, Norah Jones and and and … For the last evening, we kept a treasure, a screening of Tosca attended live by opera star Angela Gheorghiu and Dominique Meyer, the director of Wiener Staatsoper, who joined us for a little Tosca talk on stage after the performance. It’s already becoming a tradition… In previous years,
Plácido Domingo, Barbara Frittoli, Renate Holm, Ioan Holender, Christian von Weber, Robert Meyer, Christian Kolonovits, the Wiener Sängerknaben a.o. stopped by and enjoyed the unique atmosphere of our high quality festival! Mariss Jansons Conducts The Beethoven Symphonies
Preparing For Gluck Anniversary In 2014 In 2014,the musical world will be celebrating the 300th birthday of Christoph Willibald Gluck. On this occasion, Clasart Classic and BVA return to the unique Baroque castle theater in Český Krumlov – after the recording of Scarlatti’s Dove è amore è gelosia, which has just been awarded the German Record Critics' Award – in order to record Gluck’s first re-
Ludwig van Beethoven composed nine symphonies within 24 years – the first at the age of 29, the ninth and last he completed almost entirely deaf in 1824. Last year, Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons fulfilled his heart’s desire and performed all of Beethoven’s symphonies together with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in one of the world’s most beautiful concert halls – the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Martha Argerich & Friends Martha Argerich is doubtless one of the most brilliant and vivacious pianists of our time. This recording from the Münchner Klaviersommer 1982 is a rarity due to the altogether quite limited number of Argerich’s public appearances. Here she plays pieces by Mozart, Chopin, Ravel, Rachmaninov and Schumann, together with her piano partners Nelson Freire and Nicolas Economou as well as cellist Mischa Maisky. (101671)
Richard Wagner Das Rheingold The La Scala Rheingold in May 2010 inaugurated Guy Cassiers’ Ring-Cycle and introduces a completely new paradigm to this work. It shows how the globalized moment of 2010 continues to build on the Wagnerian vocabularies of 1870. With a cast of stars like René Pape, Stephan Rügamer, Johannes Martin Kränzle and Anna Larsson – and conducted by Daniel Barenboim – this Rheingold is bound to put the audience under its spell. formative work Orfeo ed Euridice. The outstanding cast is led by Bejun Mehta and Eva Liebau in the title roles; Regula Mühlemann performs the role of Amor. Václav Luks conducts the Collegium 1704. Ondřej Havelka directs this production. His film adaptation will be based on the contrast between two approaches. There are two worlds: Firstly, the world of an illusionary Baroque theatre with its completely preserved stage machinery, its costumes and props. Secondly, the intimate and internal world where one can observe the timeless fight between love and conscience burdened with guilt, between despair and desire, between courage and fear mixed with doubt. The battlefield lies inside the unhappy and torn soul of the main character.

GAMSfilm&music’s Orvuse On Oanwe – Servus In Wien – Hello In Vienna – Arts Documentary About Vienna’s Last Original Doodlers
Bregenzer Festspiele For TV: First Opera Live Broadcast Using Film Cameras
© Javier del Real
As he did with Mozart (Wolf), Monteverdi (Vsprs) and Bach (Iets op Bach and Pitié!), Alain Platel immerses us in an extraordinary musical, choreographic and human experience based on extracts for chorus by Verdi and Wagner whose bicentenaries we are celebrating this year. 80 chorus singers from the Teatro Real Madrid and 10 dancers will gather on stage to explore the power of these opera fragments which – in the 19th century – expressed people’s aspirations to liberty and national unity. How can these aspirations be interpreted today, at a time of introspection concerning identity and protests by indignados? How can the irresistible emotion, which emanates from these big collective choirs be presented without losing the individual heart beat? Alain Platel and his impressive group of performers give shape and voice to these questions with a poignant commitment, in a tribute to what brings us together and sets us apart. This entire performance, a production of the Teatro Real Madrid and les ballets C de la B, is to be seen on www.lamonnaie.be from 10 to 30 September 2013.
A film by Christina Zurbrügg Orvuse On Oanwe means “Hello in Vienna“ in the language of the old Viennese folksingers. Trude Mally, Poldi Debeljak and Luise Wagner were the last ones of their kind who besides singing had mastered the almost forgotten art of "doodling", a Viennese version of yodeling. The life stories of these three old ladies are quirky, sentimental and full of zest for life. A journey through the past, scarred by war, turmoil and strokes of fate, characterized by the love of singing. As early as 1993, when there was no talk at all about “New Viennese Music”, the Vienna-based Swiss musician and singer Christina Zurbrügg documented the meanwhile deceased Viennese folksingers in her film Orvuse on Oanwe. A spectacular pioneering feat that helped to create a new image for the at that time rather square Viennese tavern music. 1998 the film was presented at the Radiokulturhaus Wien and since 2010 it is protected by the UNESCO as an example for immaterial cultural heritage. Starting in autumn 2013, a revised version of the film is finally available on DVD, supplemented with a 160page book. At the same time the CD „doodle it!“ – yodels from Vienna by Christina Zurbrügg is released. Produced by GAMSfilm&music Distribution: Preiser Records and ORF-Shop

At the Bregenzer Festspiele 2013, in collaboration with ARRI, ORF, and Unitel, tpc has been producing the world’s first opera live broadcast using film cameras and a mobile studio. Six ARRI Alexa lent a special film look to the TV production of the Festspielhaus production of The Merchant of Venice. This was a special challenge for the tpc camera crews because the limited zoom range required a very unusual visual concept… The cameras were linked via fibre optics direct to the tpc RW HD1 mobile studio, where the video material was edited using standard processes. The production has been broadcast by ORF; a DVD will soon be released by the Bregenzer Festspiele. For SRF, ORF, and 23 other TV stations, including some in China and South Korea, tpc also used conventional technology to produce Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute in a live broadcast from the floating stage at Bregenz. This production will also be released soon on DVD by the Bregenzer Festspiele. Read more... A subsidiary of SRG SSR, tpc switzerland ag is responsible for

Wagner VS Verdi ... On ARTE Wagner VS Verdi – The Chant Is there something like a typical Verdi voice or Wagner voice? The documentary by director Thomas Macho explores this question by attending and observing a Wagner voice competition in Karlsruhe as well as by accompanying Professor Ello Battagila, who is one of the most popular singing teachers in Italy. He analyses a Verdi aria with the help of one of his students and shows the subtleties of the interpretation. Furthermore, there is the question of how the music of these two opera giants was interpreted during its time of origin. How did Otello sound at this time then? How was the Götterdämmerung staged? And why is it so difficult to manage a proper orchestration of Wagner nowadays? Hans Neuenfels, Christoph WagnerTrenkwitz, Christian Thielemann, Rolando, Villazon and Gwyneth Jones have the answers to these questions... Broadcasted on Sunday, 1 September at 12.30 pm, on ARTE.

ECHO KLASSIK 2013 For Classical Music and Cold War
German Record Critics' Award For Dove È Amore È Gelosia
Echo Klassik For MTT/SFS Recording Of John Adams’s Harmonielehre And Short Ride In A Fast Machine
The documentary Classical Music and Cold War – Musicians in the GDR by Thomas Zintl receives the ECHO Klassik Award 2013 in the category “Music-DVD-Production of the year”. The award ceremony will take place on 6 October.
In 1945, after the war had ended, the world split into East and West in political terms. The frontier between the two blocs cut straight through Germany and quickly became a dividing line between contrasting cultural systems. The Socialist Unity Party developed the idea of a nation of culture-loving working people in deliberate contrast to their portrayal of ”Americanized, western capitalists softened by endless consumption“. Together with sport, classical music was instrumentalized for ideological purposes and used to advertise the merits of the GDR. This combination of art and dictatorship created an environment in which music-making of world quality was able to flourish. Classical Music and Cold War is a production of Bernhard Fleischer Moving Images GmbH / Wunderlich Medien Gbr.
The recording of Giuseppe Scarlatti’s opera Dove è amore è gelosia, a joint production of BVA, Clasart Classic, NHK and Czech Television directed by Ondřej Havelka, was awarded the German Record Critics' Award. Max Nyfeller, member of the jury: “In this production you can find everything that makes a successful opera recording: a Neapolitan Buffa, light as a feather, staged by the performers musically convincingly and wittily, in addition a production that congenially involves the auratic place of the debut performance in 1768 in the proceedings. With its stage machinery from the 18th century, the castle theater in the bohemian Český Krumlov, a freshly renovated baroque theater, is the secret star in this charming production.” Clasart Classic is responsible for the worldwide television distribution rights of this enchanting production. The DVD/Blu-ray of Dove è amore è gelosia was released by Opus Arte.
Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony will receive an ECHO Klassik Award 2013 for Orchestra of the Year. The Orchestra will be honored for its hybrid SACD of music by American composer John Adams, which was released on the Orchestra’s own label, SFS Media, in spring 2012. This live concert recording featuring the works Harmonielehre and Short Ride in a Fast Machine by John Adams, a long-time musical partner of the Orchestra, has already won a Grammy Award in the category of Best Orchestral Performance. The 20th annual ECHO Klassik awards ceremony will take place at the Berlin Konzerthaus on 6 October 2013.
