Editorial Dear Members, I would like to take this opportunity to point out my view of the purpose of a membership organisation – such as the IMZ. The three major points are: 1. Generate Strategies Bringing information Broadening the network Testing strategies

Franz Patay (c) Simlinger

2. Generate Funding Public funding Private funding 3. Generate Visibility Especially for the small members At this stage, all these points cannot be carried out by the secretariat alone, but need a strong involvement and co-operation of as many members as possible. The mission of the IMZ "to encourage the promotion and dissemination of music throughout the audio-visual media: the gramophone, film, radio and television" (Original Statutes, 1961) must keep up with the times. In words of today, my interpretation of our mission is: • to encourage the production and dissemination of music programmes (especially jazz and world music) on international television and in other visual media • to stimulate a dialogue between composers, filmmakers, stage and television directors, set designers, performing artists, audio-visual producers, broadcasters, and record companies • to promote international co-production • to raise the profile of music and music theatre in today’s media environment • to inspire new ideas about the screen presentation of music and music theatre and to offer a platform for creative innovation • to nurture local and regional talents and enhance the skills of emerging art producers, filmmakers and broadcasters • to stimulate investment in co-production programmes in arts and culture projects between and among artists and producers. • to facilitate dialogue and to encourage collaboration among artists and media professionals All this can be attained if all members work together on achieving these aims. It is my strong belief that only with the involvement of all members the IMZ will be able to fulfil our mission. In order to produce more relevant information with this Newsletter for IMZ-members, we kindly invite you to provide us with more feedback about what kind of information you would expect from our newsletter and in what way you are wishing to get it delivered (E-mail, Link, iPad Application, Smartphone, etc.). Looking forward to your feedback! Best regards, Franz Patay Secretary General

Karsten Riedel & Franui: Fool of Love cat.no.: WWE 1 CD 20308 EAN 9120031340997 We were overjoyed when we learned about the lucky encounter between Franui and Karsten Riedel: The “musicbanda” from the tiny East Tyrolean village Innervillgraten, equipped with a hammered dulcimer, harp, zither, wind and string instruments, make music with the pop singer from Bochum-Wattenscheid, who played with ska, punk and reggae bands before he started working for the theatre. Eventually, they launched their Shakespeare Sonnet Show at the Burgtheater in Vienna; the congregation was enchanted, everyone wanted a souvenir to take home – and here it is. The tailor-made offer includes a dedicated exhibition and networking zone at the heart of the market, a Classical Bar and a Discussion Lounge, a four-day pro-

gramme of IMZ Avant-Première Screenings as well as a Classical Embassy presenting some of the most promising young artists. In the Discussion Lounge outstanding speakers such as Sir Nicholas Kenyon (managing director, Barbican Centre), Jim Selby (CEO, Naxos of America), Robert Zimmermann (managing director, Berlin Phil Media), Mickaël Arcos (software engineer, Abeille Musique) or Matthias Röder (director, Eliette und Herbert von Karajan Institut) will discuss the latest trends and developments in classical music. The discussions will be moderated by James Jolly, editor-in-chief of Gramophone and presenter at BBC Radio 3, and Andrew McGregor, presenter at BBC Radio 3. The world-renowned pianist Lang Lang is taking the midem stage as a Visionary Monday keynote speaker, to explain how talent, technology and brand partnerships contributed to exposing his music to a broader community, while disrupting the classical music world. The midem Classical Embassy is organised in partnership with the prestigious Salzburg Festival through their Young Singers Project, YCAT (Young Classical Artists Trust) and Steinway & Sons and will take place in the cosy atmosphere of the Hotel 3.14. Over the course of three thematic nights, introduced by James Jolly, the spotlight will be on the most outstanding young artists. The Classical Embassy is supported by distinguished ambassadors such as Christa Ludwig, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Alice Sara Ott, Alain Lanceron, Eugène Prim and Gerrit Glaner.
