IMZ ACADEMY – 1st EDITION Multi-Camera Perfomance Capture Workshop At ITF Golden Prague Countdown for the 1st edition of the IMZ Academy is on! We are excited for the upcoming IMZ Academy supported by Czech Television, ITF Golden Prague and Czekaj Artistic Productions! It will be the first IMZ multi-camera performance capture workshop for young professionals in the field of music and dance media-production. The highly practical workshop offers intense exchange with experts in the field! We are more than happy that customised advise on the production of arts programming will this year come from Peter Maniura from BBC Television, directing the IMZ Academy in cooperation with Andy Parker, experienced TV music editor! The IMZ Academy has been designed for young professionals having working experience in the genre of concert, opera, dance or music documentary programmes aiming for practical cooperation in a workshop setting with experienced, highly qualified colleagues! From 13 – 15 October 2013 at ITF Golden Prague, a maximum of four teams have the chance to work in the editing room of the Czech Television on material brought to the Academy by the participants themselves as well as on prepared case studies! Even though the work will focus on a few programmes selected beforehand, Peter Maniura and Andy Barker, the directors of the Academy emphasize that every participant, be it active participant or observer, is highly invited to bring any of his or her own work to the Academy to show and discuss it with colleagues in the productive environment of the Academy! The Academy consists of two days of intense workshops on 13 + 14 October 2013 focussing on direc-
ting and the visualisation of the music, as well as editing, scheduling, or the financial and cultural context in which programming has been made. Important and downto-earth questions for arts productions will be raised and discussed in the Academy: What were the editorial specifications, what was the purpose of the programme, for what format has it been made? How many cameras did you use? How long did you have to edit the programme? Did you edit your sound separately? How long did the entire project last? What were audience figures, press & publicity for the programme? Practitioners, producers, broadcasters, distributors as well as Internet professionals are invited to share their knowledge. The sequence of workshops is followed by a feedback session and every participant is invited to share the outcome in a joint EBU-IMZ Panel open to the public at ITF Golden Prague on Tuesday, 15 October, at 10.00 a.m. Find the detailed Academy schedule here. If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact the IMZ office office@imz.at.

dance screen 2013 With San Francisco Dance Film Festival And The Winner Is… What a success! For the first time in the IMZ history, dance screen – celebrating its 25 anniversary – took place in the United States of America! From 12 – 15 September 2013 almost 1,200 visitors from all over the world participated in the event in San Francisco. The four-day dance film festival offered fine examples of dance films, from live performance on film through dance on screen to dance documentaries, as well as interesting, controversial, exciting panels and discussions with recognized academic experts and practitioners! A fruitful exchange was initiated and further business connections in the world of dance on screen between Europe and the US were established! Nearly 300 submissions in five categories were brought down in the run-up to the festival to 70 films to be judged on location
by an internationally renowned jury. Get an overview of all the submissions, and order the dance screen 2013 catalogue via the IMZ office. 50 short screen productions were shown to the public at two cinemas, the Roxie Theater and the Delancey Screening Room. Additionally to the cinema screenings, viewing stations in the Delancey Theater and the Museum of Performance and Design (MP+D) enabled visitors to watch all the 70 films judged by the jury. The 5 jury members, Balletboyz founders Michael Nunn and William Trevitt; choreographer, filmmaker and educator Ellen Bromberg; Lyn e t t e Kessler, Artistic and Executive Director of Dance Camera West; and Muriel Maffre, former dancer with Hamburg Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo and San Francisco Ballet, and currently director of the MP+D, had a difficult task to fulfil! Finally, the jury selected the
dance screen winner, best film (endowed with $5.000): The Six Seasons (France, 2012) 51min, directed by Gilles Delamas, choreographed by Akram Khan – and the best student film (awarded with a prize of $2.000): Momentum (Germany, 2012) 7min, directed and choreographed by Boris Seewald! Congratulations to winners! Beside the award ceremony, another festival highlight was the world premiere of the film Dance On Screen by Reiner Moritz. The film is telling the unique story of dance in the audio-visual sector using rarely seen high-class archive material and connecting it with expert interviews! Thanks to Reiner Moritz for this documentary preserving a piece of dance history! And, of course: Thanks to all who came to San Francisco to celebrate with us! Thanks to our partners, the San Francisco Dance Film Festival, San Francisco Ballet, and the San Francisco Film Society. In fall 2012, Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchestra presented Mahler’s Tragic, the 6th Symphony in Leipzig and at numerous European festivals with overwhelming success. The live recording from the Gewandhaus in Leipzig will now be released on DVD and Blu-ray (14 October 2013). Inspired by Chailly’s interpretation, his friend, the artist Neo Rauch created another painting for the ACCENTUS Mahler cycle. His Stadt im Tal will be featured on the DVD cover and will also be presented in Rauch’s solo exhibition from 21 September to 7 December in Leipzig. Six out of the ten Mahler symphonies with Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchestra have now been filmed by Accentus. Sergiu Celibidache Firebrand And Philosopher
Sergiu Celibidache was a man of extremes – or rather: his human nature was extreme. He hated nothing more than indifference, lukewarmness and mediocrity – in himself most of all. Norbert Busè’s film is a moving portrayal of the legendary conductor. For the first time there are interviews with Celibidache’s sister and son Serge. This is the portrait of a conductor who perhaps more than any other combined analysis and passion, ruthlessness and sympathy – a maestro furioso. (101661)

Claude Debussy Pelléas Et Mèlisande
Music of introverted tenderness and a libretto that hints at much and offers few answers – such is Pelléas et Mélisande, Claude Debussy’s only completed opera. Staged in Essen’s Aalto Theatre, this pioneering work of early modern times was a landmark. Conductor Stefan Soltesz knows how to highlight these sensual Debussy colours, let melody blossom, enthral with the magic of sound. The production by stage director Nikolaus Lehnhoff has a cast to match these wondrous sounds: Jacques Imbrailo, Michaela Selinger, Vincent Le Texier and Doris Soffel. (101686)
The eighth season of the Met Live in HD, presented in Germany and Austria by Clasart Classic, begins on 5 October with an undisputable highlight: Deborah Warner’s new production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin conducted by Valery Gergiev and directed by Fiona Shaw in her Met debut. The Russian diva Anna Netrebko continues her run of opening nights at the Metropolitan Opera into a third season with a role she was born to sing, Tatiana in this exuberant romantic Tchaikovsky classic. Mariusz Kwiecien and Piotr Beczala complete the excellent cast.

The 2013/2014 season features a further nine live transmissions presenting an exciting mix of operas and opera stars: Met Music Director James Levine makes his highly-anticipated return to the screen, leading performances of Falstaff and Così fan tutte. With Borodin’s Prince Igor and Shostakovitch’s The Nose in an innovative production by William Kentridge two other gems of Russian repertoire will be presented. The pro-

La Monnaie/ makido film ORFDe Munt Enterprise Sacre
©Bernd Uhlig
On 29 May 1913, Le Sacre du printemps, composed by Igor Stravinsky for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and choreographed by Nijinsky, caused a scandal at its premiere in Paris. Since then this volcanic work has become “the 9th symphony of the 20th century” and has inspired numerous choreographers. For the centenary of Le Sacre, Sasha Waltz has created her version of this iconic work; first for the dancers of the Mariinksy Ballet and then for the dancers of her own company. This second version was premiered at La Monnaie. The entire performance is to be seen on www.lamonnaie.be from Friday 27 September to Thursday 17 October 2013
New Documentary For 3sat About Richard Strauss And Kurt Weill
makido film is shooting for their new documentary which will be aired on 3sat in December 2013. Strauss and Weill were both famous at the same time; one of them conducted the opening of the Reichsmusiktage in Düsseldorf, the other one left Europe and never spoke a German word again. Director Michael Pfeifenberger asks important artists of our time: how much influence did artists have during the Holocaust when trying to make a change? What can they blamed responsible for and is it possible to divide an artist’s mindset and biografy from his artwork? Angela Denoke, Anna Prohaska and the Weill-interpreter Carmen-Maja Antoni are being interviewed, as well as Nina Hagen, Iris Berben and Richard Strauss‘ grandson Christian Strauss.
Konstantin Wecker And Angelika Kirchschlager In Frankenthal
On 31 October, makido film is shooting the first concert of the concert tour Liedestoll of Konstantin Wecker and Angelika Kirchschlager. The documentary by director Christian Kugler will be broadcasted in December on 3sat. www.makidofilm.tv

Bruckner 4 With Welser-Möst And The Cleveland Orchestra Awarded Bruckner Recording Of The Year
New Marketing & Sales Manager
HEINZ KRASSNITZER 1953 – 2013
The recording of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 (in the rarely heard 1888 version), performed by The Cleveland Orchestra under the baton of its principal conductor Franz Welser-Möst, was awarded best Bruckner video recording of the past year by the Bruckner Society of America. The recording took place in the fall of 2012 at the Baroque Monastery of St. Florian near Linz, Austria, Bruckner’s first place of activity and also the place where he was buried underneath “his” great organ. Director Brian Large captured the exhilarating atmosphere of the monastery on film. This recording marks the fifth installment in The Cleveland Orchestra’s Bruckner cycle, conducted by acknowledged Bruckner specialist Franz Welser-Möst, produced by Clasart Classic.
