Television has been instrumental in popularizing music, preserving precious moments of music making and helping to create music and performances which would not exist without it.

LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA / LSO LIVE AUDIO BLU-RAY RELEASES LSO Live are pleased to release their first two pure audio Blu-ray recordings on the label: The inaugural pure audio Blu-ray release, Berlioz Symphonie fantastique and Overture: Waverley, which is scheduled for release on 29 September, is the start of the much-anticipated Berlioz cycle with Valery Gergiev. Berlioz let his imagination run wild in his music, finding inspiration in all manner of sources, including his own turbulent personal life. His experience of powerful, unrequited love finds its expression in the emotionally charged Symphonie fantastique, the story of an artist’s “hopeless love”, complete with waltzes, witches and a hallucinogenic nightmare. There are few orchestras with the music of Berlioz more thoroughly in their blood than the LSO, and here Valery Gergiev brings to bear his opulent interpretation of this landmark piece. Following this release is Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 Scottish and Overture: The Hebrides + Schumann Piano Concerto. The recording, scheduled for release on 13 October, is the start of the much-anticipated series exploring the complete symphonies of Felix Mendelssohn under the baton of Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Also featured on this release is the eminent Portuguese pianist, Maria João Pires, in the inaugural concerto recording on the label. Both of these exciting, new recordings will be released in SACD and pure audio Blu-ray formats, including bonus HD video footage, allowing the London Symphony Orchestra and these fantastic performances to be seen and heard to full effect. www.lso.co.uk www.mariinskylabel.com

THE FAIRY QUEEN, 135 MIN., HD OPERA BY HENRY PURCELL By dropping the spoken scenes of the whole semi-opera and highlighting the ear-candy songs, fabulous dance scenes, clever effects and on stage-silliness of Purcell’s work, Harnoncourt father and son let the audience sit back and enjoy the memorable “masques” en suite. Taken on its own, the colourful series of scenes turns out to be a Baroque version of the “Everyman” play, where in a magical night a young couple encounters the heralds of nature. They remind the young persons of who they are, where they come from and where they are headed. And as you can see: The imagination knows no bounds in the realm of the Fairy Queen.

Clasart Classic presents two ECHO KLASSIK-winning productions from the Met live in HD series: Piotr Beczala just received the award for “male singer of the year” for his role as Duke of Mantua in the Met’s Rigoletto; Thomas Adès’ The Tempest was awarded “music DVD recording of the year”. THE TEMPEST Thomas Adès’ opera, based on Shakespeare’s play, has been widely praised as a modern masterpiece. Adès, who is also conducting this performance, fashioned a language that on its surface may seem seductively tonal. “But at every moment all sorts of complex, subtle things are going on in this music” (New York Times). The libretto by Meredith Oakes distills Shakespeare's text into rhyming couplets in modern English. The Tempest is brought to life in a dazzling production by Robert Lepage, who recreates the interior of La Scala as the magical island venue for the otherworldly arts of Prospero, sung by Simon Keenlyside.

LOTUS RECORDS / ECM 19 November 2014 | Salzburg (Austria) THE HILLIARD ENSEMBLE & JAN GARBAREK - FINAL OFFICIUM AT SALZBURG CATHEDRAL
WIEN MODERN New Series Officium CDs, a podcast featuring Jan Garbarek, Manfred Eicher, David James, Rogers Covey-Crump und Gordon Jones plus Fiona Talkington HERE and enjoy the the video HERE.
On 19 November at 6:30 pm, the www.lotusrecords.at Salzburg Cathedral will witness the final Officium concert with Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble on their farewell tour in Austria. The Hilliard Ensemble – David James, countertenor; Roger Covey-Crump, tenor; Steven Harrold, tenor und Gordon Jones, bariton – will retire end of this year after a 40-years career in the limelight of the international music scene. The ensemble’s legendary Officium had its premiere 20 years ago at Propstei St. Gerold in Vorarlberg, Austria, when ECM founder Manfred Eicher invited them and Jan Garbarek on a musical blind date.... David James Recalls... „How it all began [...] Apprehensive, we waited nervously for a while wondering how to proceed, until we decided to just do what we do: sing. So we began a long, slow homophonic funeral motet by Spanish composer, Cristobel Morales, expecting Jan would listen and then respond in some way. As we were nearing the end, I felt a deep shuddering vibration, as if at sea on a ferry, a sensation that swiftly became an explosion of interweaving ethereal sounds. Jan had grasped his saxophone and introduced a fifth voice. It was the most magical musical mo ment in my entire forty-year career with the Hilliard Ensemble. [...] When we finished the piece, no one in chapel moved or made a sound. [...] We reconvened two months later to record Officium, the album that sold over a million copies and has for twenty years been opening doors for us to magnificent venues throughout the world. Its continuing success is testament to the vision of ECM, and was followed by two more albums.“ (in: The Guardian, March 2014) Find more information on the ECM
29 October - 21 November 2014 | Vienna (Austria) WIEN MODERN, one of the biggest festivals for new music, will start this year on 29 October. Until 21 November, more than 60 events will take place in almost 20 locations in Vienna. One of the focal points of this years’ festival will be the relationship between modern music and film. Since cinema's very beginnings, film-makers have strived to combine the endless potential of music with that of the moving picture in order to intensify – or even foil – the actions and emotions on screen. Long regarded as the poor cousin of music, film music is increasingly gaining recognition among musicians, audiences and musicologists as an intellectually substantial and important genre. In its 27th edition, WIEN MODERN will take a close look, as part of its on screen focus, at the interface between film and television and contemporary music. Thanks to its combination with the medium of the moving picture, audiences who would normally be sceptical towards new music accept and even appreciate it on screen – big or small or tablet-sized. A very special highlight of the series will be the sitcom-opera Life at the Edge of the Milky Way in seven parts by the Austrian composer Bernhard Gander. The Berio Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus will be transformed into a state-of-the-art television studio for five evenings. True to the character of a sitcom, socio-political issues will be presented and explored with humour and irony. In addition, the on screen focus will comprise performances of other works in which different composers explore the media of film and television. www.wienmodern.at
