Dear members and friends, the period of the previous IMZ Executive Board (2010 – 2013) has ended and I want to sincerely thank all its members for their dedicated work and important support. I may, also in the name of the IMZ office, express my special gratitude and bid farewell to our long-time IMZ Board Member Gunilla Jensen who has recently left SVT (Sveriges Television) but will fortunately remain active in the world of music and dance in the audio-visual media! On the other hand, I may welcome the new IMZ Executive Board Members (2014 – 2017) and the recently elected IMZ Directorate, especially pointing out the persons who are new on board for this exiting period: Nicolas Auboyneau (France Television), Marie-Odile Demay (MO Demay), Francois Duplat (Belair Media), Bernhard Fleischer (Bernhard Fleischer Moving Images), Andrew Golding (SBS Television), Masumi Kawaguchi (NHK Japan), Rita Lombardi (RAI) and Jan Younghusband (BBC). I also would like to thank the IMZ Board for unanimously electing me as IMZ President. The IMZ is proud of its Executive Board for 2014 – 2017, which consists of representatives of internationally acclaimed broadcasters, producers, distributors as well as an educational institution and will be facing manifold challenges as well as tasks in the years lying ahead! In October, the IMZ held the first edition of the IMZ Academy at Golden Prague Festival, successfully implementing the idea of actively contributing to keeping up and developing new strategies regarding the high art of producing audio-visual music and dance programmes. The IMZ is currently concentrating all its efforts on organising and starting off a “new era” with the Avant Première 2014 MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET BERLIN, taking place at the Scandic Hotel Berlin from 8 – 12 February 2014, located extremely close to the Berlinale Festival and the European Filmmarket at Gropius Bau. I warmly invite you and your partners to register now and be part of an event that will set new standards and become a fix point in your calendar when it comes to networking and exchange within the vast and differentiated industry of music and dance in the audio-visual media. The new website of the Avant Première MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET BERLIN is online and will provide you with detailed information on the interesting programme, including the Avant Première Screenings, a Booth Area, Panels, Lectures, unique side events and much more! I am looking forward to seeing you and your colleagues and business-partners at the buzzing Avant Première Music + Media Market in February in Berlin! Very best wishes,

Grand Gala Concert In Honour Of Krzysztof Penderecki

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi Tutto Pergolesi

On 23 November, Krzysztof Penderecki, Poland’s best-known living composer, will celebrate his 80th birthday. Outstanding artists from the classical music world such as Anne-Sophie Mutter, Roman Patkolo, Daniel Müller-Schott, Arto Noras, Ivand Monighetti, Valery Gergiev, Krzysztof Urbanski and Charles Dutoit will honor the “late-modern classicist” with a Gala Concert at the Teatre Wielki in Warsaw, with the composer himself in attendance. The concert programme will feature a special selection of Penderecki’s work, including the exceptional Credo. The Gala Concert recording will be co-produced by TVP and Accentus Music. www.accentus.com

Although the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi only reached the age of 26, he left a remarkable oeuvre in his short career that is now to be discovered. His operas continue to enjoy great success in numerous performances at the Pergolesi Festival in Jesi. In 1731 he was commissioned by the Teatro di San Bartolomeo to compose his debut opera La Salustia; followed by great works like Lo frate ’nnamorato, Il prigionier superbo, La serva padrona, Adriano in Siria, L’Olimpiade and Il Flaminio. (107538)

Richard Wagner Die Walküre The Scala Ring Cycle by Guy Cassiers is continued with numerous outstanding opera stars. Most of all, the

leading ladies Waltraud Meier, Nina Stemme and Ekaterina Gubanova are to be named. Simon O’Neill and John Tomlinson fight a stirring duel as Siegmund and Hunding and Vitalij Kowaljow gives his dark portrayal of Wotan. Daniel Barenboim presents a fantastic musical interpretation of this “first day” of the tetralogy. Now on DVD and Blu-ray. (101694/108091)

Anton Bruckner Celibidache Rehearses Bruckner’s Ninth

For a full sixty minutes Celibidache rehearses Bruckner’s Ninth – a key work for the composer, who did not complete any more compositions after he finished the Adagio. It is also a key work for Celibidache, who towards the end of his life frequently returned to working on Bruckner’s late symphonies. In no other documentary film about Celibidache does one experience with such immediacy the moment of music being created. (Blu-ray 108089) www.arthaus-musik.com

LA MONNAIE / PETER ROSEN 50TH ITF DE MUNT PRODUCTIONS, GOLDEN INC. PRAGUE La Clemenza Di Tito

Rome, 79 AD. The emperor Tito narrowly escapes the attack his best friend Sesto has plotted against him under pressure from his beloved Vitellia. Tito is faced with the heartrending choice of following his feelings and granting his friend clemency, or following his reason and condemning him. In La Clemenza di Tito Mozart returned to opera seria just a few months before his death. He had not worked in this genre since Idomeneo.

© Clärchen & Matthias Baus

For a long time this work, quite unjustifiably, remained in the shadow of his other great masterpieces, despite the fact that much of the music he wrote for this work is among the best in his oeuvre. Belgian director Ivo van Hove gives the piece a perfect staging: refined and without exaggeration... His approach rhymes perfectly with music director Ludovic Morlot‘s thoughtful and nuanced conducting of La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra. The entire opera is to be seen on www.lamonnaie.be from Friday 1 to Thursday 21 November 2013.

Touching The Sound

The film on 24-year-old blind pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii is nearing completion with sound mixing, special effects, and colour grading scheduled for November. WDR and ORF have come aboard as production partners so far. Avex Classics International will handle Blu-ray and DVD distribution in Asia. Touching the Sound is director Peter Rosen‘s third film about Nobu, following his documentary about Nobu‘s Van Cliburn Competition victory in 2009, A Surprise in Texas, and his Carnegie Hall debut in 2011, Nobuyuki Tsujii Live at Carnegie Hall, both distributed by EuroArts. The film traces Nobuyuki‘s lifelong struggle to become a world-class pianist – from his birth, his young years as a student, on a recent American tour, and to the earthquake and tsunami devastated areas of Japan filmed this past May, ending at his debut at the Proms, in London. www.peterrosenproductions.com
