EVDH CONFERENCE: RESEARCHING THE FUTURE OF DANCE ON FILM 13 – 15 November 2013 | Düsseldorf, Germany These were three exciting days of panels, discussions, meetings and get-togethers at the European Video Dance Heritage Conference at Tanzhaus nrw in Düsseldorf! We enjoyed listening to the latest industry news and updates by experts from the various fields of dance on film as well as catching up with friends and colleagues. At the conference around 40 speakers contributed to capture Video Dance Heritage from as various aspects as arts, media, technology, politics or law. Workshops focussed on the conditions of digitalisation, communication and cultural education as well as following the path from the archive to the audience. The overall goal of the EVDH project is to structure a European memory of dance through video and to transmit this heritage to younger generations, considering its political, economic, technical, legal and educational di-

mensions. The project follows three main goals: First, to raise awareness among professionals and institutions on the need to promote a policy to preserve and transmit video dance. Second, to help professionals to understand overall conditions when producing audio-visual material like recording choreographies regarding copyright, intellectual property or image rights. Following the third goal – to develop new creations which contribute to a European Dance Memory through shared experiences – we are looking forward to the next big activity in this project: An interdisciplinary video workshop held in Madrid from 26 May – 1 June 2014 in association with The Higher Dance Institute of The Rey Juan Carlos University. The workshop invites choreographers, performers, musicians, scriptwriters, image technicians or film editors providing hands-on advice by

international experts in media productions specialising in dance video creation. The results of the workshop will be presented at The Reina Sofia National Art Museum. Stick around for more details to follow! www.evdhproject.eu

IMZ ACADEMY An Update The IMZ Academy is an initiative to enhance intensive exchange between renowned experts and young professionals in the field of music and dance media production. In a sequence of workshops the IMZ Academy sets the scene to encourage the passing on of expertise to promising new talents. Experienced practitioners and key players of the industry – producers, broadcasters, distributors as well as Internet professionals – share their knowledge in a series of master classes, courses, lectures and apprenticeships. The focus is set on the production of current programmes encompassing a wide range of related subjects. Following the successful 1st edition of the IMZ Academy at ITF Golden Prague, a feedback meeting with

IMZ President Arild Erikstad, IMZ Vice-President Henk van der Meulen and Peter Maniura, Director of the 1st edition of the IMZ Academy, took place at the IMZ office in Vienna. For the next editions of the IMZ Academy, to be held in 2014, the IMZ is currently developing and designing three different course modules: – a theoretical module, held by handpicked international experts, consisting of lectures about the many questions and issues to be handled during the various stages of the production process and the joint work on case studies; – a practical module including an on-the-spot production of an audio-visual music programme as main part of the skill-based course supervised by world-leading directors; and

– an apprenticeship module, which shall provide the participant with the unique opportunity to actively take part in an internationally renowned classical music production. For a review of the course programme of the 1st edition of IMZ Academy, have a look at www.imz. at/index.php?id=615. ALLEGRO FILMS “Allegro Films came into existence as a direct result of an extraordinary constellation of unprecedented circumstances. Television was new and full of hope that it could do something of real value for music. Arriflex invented a new kind of camera: the BL, the first lightweight, and silent 16mm film camera. A new generation of super-talented young musicians appeared, different in kind from their predecessors – at least in their relationship with the camera. Happily, many of those young musicians were our friends before we ever thought of making films with them, (Jaqueline du Pré, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zukerman, Itzhak Perlman, Zubin Mehta, John Williams) and the friendship allowed them to do things that no

musicians had ever done in front of cameras before. We were fortunate, and privileged, to be there, at the right time and to produce a new kind of intimate portrait film. In the process we discovered that film was remembering the artistic persona in a way that was not only new in the world but which not one of the other media is able to match. The genre was soon recognised as one of the most successful ways of presenting classical music on television and so it remains.” (Christopher Nupen)

THE CZECH PHILHARMONIC For over a century, the Czech Philharmonic has represented the pinnacle of Czech cultural achievement. In 1896, Dvorák conducted the orchestra’s debut performance at the Rudolfinum in Prague, still home to the orchestra’s Prague concerts. The Czech Philharmonic performs in venues including New York’s Carnegie Hall, Musikverein in Vienna, Philharmonie in Berlin, London’s Royal Festival Hall and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Festival appearances include the BBC Proms, Berliner Festspiele, Lucerne Festival and Salzburger Festspiele. On the orchestra’s recording of Suk’s Asrael Symphony, The Financial Times noted, in 2011: “The Czech

Philharmonic’s live performance breathes a conviction and beneaththe-skin rapture that you won’t find in any other recording.” Under the baton of the inimitable Jirí Belohlávek from 2012, the Czech Philharmonic has entered a new era, combining tradition with innovation and attracting international recognition as an orchestra at the height of its powers.

CLASART CLASSIC as Rodolfo “is a gold treasure from Canada. A real tenor!” Conducted by Michael Güttler. (101688/108088)

Richard Wagner Siegfried With Siegfried, the Scala Ring Cycle by Guy Cassiers is continued. Lance Ryan, having interpreted this role on the greatest stages of the world portrays the naïve hero. His antagonists are Peter Bronder, great and agile as Mime, Terje Stensvold, an experienced Wanderer and Johannes Martin Kränzle, who continues his mean and deceitful depiction of Alberich. The leading ladies are Nina Stemme, once again unrivalled as Brünnhilde and Anna Larsson, moving as the God-mother Erda. (101695/108092)

Recording Of Orfeo Ed Euridice Completed For the Gluck anniversary in 2014, Clasart Classic has realized a film adaption of Gluck’s first reformative work Orfeo ed Euridice starring the incomparable Bejun Mehta as Orfeo. The Baroque theatre of the Ceský Krumlov Castle provides an ideal backdrop for one of the most important operas in music history. Director Ondrej Havelka captures much more than the hauntingly beautiful music of Gluck performed by singers

on stage. He chooses a cinematic approach that literally takes us behind the scenes, into the hall, and down into dark corridors deep below the theatre. The mixture of period details and modern psychological interpretation cannot fail to grip the viewer. The immortal myth of a lover’s power to bring his beloved back to life with music assumes a new dimension here, with an ingenious depiction of Euridice’s death, and Orfeo bringing about a most unexpected ending... “Bejun Mehta is arguably the best countertenor in the world today” wrote the Süddeutsche Zeitung, and in the role of Orfeo, he lends credi-

bility to the emotions tormenting his heart. As Euridice, Austrian soprano Eva Liebau juggles joy and jealousy as the beloved who doesn’t realize just how lucky she is. Bringing comic relief to the work’s dark tone is Regula Mühlemann as Amor, who cheerily sends mortals zigzaging on their way to life, love – and, maybe, death. Co-Production partners are Unitel/ Classica, BVA, ORF, Czech Television, SVT, YLE, RSI and Arthaus Musik.

MAKIDO FILM POORHOUSE SERVUSTV INTERNATIONAL Liedestoll – Angelika Kirchschlager & Konstantin Wecker Opera Singer Meets Balladeer makido film presents a unique crossover project: a documentary about opera star Angelika Kirchschlager and the balladeer Konstantin Wecker. They are switching genres, explore and expend their musical horizons as they prepare their international concert tour Liedestoll (Mad about Music). How can two exceptional artists like Kirchschlager and Wecker leave their area of expertise behind, converge with the other one and finally become one? The movie accompanies the artists on their way from the first rehearsal to the explosive first concert of their tour in Frankenthal. The harmonic interplay of the two musicians unite the songs, showing their musical backgrounds and their very own approach to the genre of their counterpart.

Poorhouse International will shortly ship delivery materials for Dance on Screen, a sequel to the highly successful Music in the Air, which has in the meantime been bought by 13 countries with the proceeds going to the IMZ. Dance on Screen will be distributed by Arthaus Musik for homevideo. In April 2014, it will be one year since Sir Colin Davis passed away. The Poorhouse documentary Colin Davis – The Man and his Music contains the last interviews with this wonderful musician who rarely talked about himself and to whom the music world owes so much. “Trifonov has everything and more. What he does with his hands is both technically and musically unbelievable. It is also his touch — he has tenderness plus also the demonic element. I have never heard anything like this before”. Those are the words of Martha Argerich, one of the world’s most respected pianists and one of the most difficult to please. She has never offered such extravagant praise before. Her words are echoed by the public, by musicians and by the critics, one of whom, Anne Midgette — among the most demanding critics in the United States — likens Trifonov to a present day Liszt. Daniil Trifonov is 22. He has won both the Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein competitions but is respected by musicians for much more than that; he is a super-gifted musician for whom composing, improvising and performing flow seamlessly into each other on an extraordinarily high level. This is a great moment which cries out to be remembered and Allegro Films are planning to produce both a portrait and a performance film, as they have done with such happy results in the past. (Jacqueline du Pré, Daniel Barenboim, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Pinchas Zukerman, Itzhak Perlman, Nathan Milstein, Andrés Segovia, Gidon Kremer, Evgeny Kissin and others). Currently, Allegro Films is looking for partners — on almost any terms they care to nominate. As Christopher Nupen put it: „Those who join us will not be sorry!“ For further information, please contact Nupallegro@gmail.com www.Allegrofilms.com

Deutschlandfunk praised the excellent sound quality, and The Daily Telegraph stated: “The performance has that familiar Abbado glow. It is phrased with grace; its rhythms are taut; its detail of instrumental timbre is phenomenally lucid. In the year 2013, the European Music Council (EMC) is celebrating a double anniversary, the 40+10 jubilee. In 2003, ten years ago, the EMC was registrated under German law as an association (e.V.) based in Bonn, Germany. Furthermore, roughly 40 years ago, the origins of the EMC were laid out in the foundation of the regional group for Europe of the International Music Council (IMC). „Its goals lie in the understanding of the people of Europe through music. [...] music can play a decisive role for the societal development of a peaceful, diverse and integrative Europe.“ (Stef Coninx, Chairman EMC) The EMC therefore advocates on local, national and European levels for an appropriate framework, respecting equal rights and opportunities for music, music professionals and access to music. The European Music Council serves its members by advocating for the societal and political significance of musical diversity in Europe and, hence, plays a key role in supporting the European communities that want to celebrate their music. It provides exceptional value to its membership by building knowledge; creating networking opportunities; supporting and enhancing the visibility of projects that help sustain people‘s participation in music and cultural life.
