EDITORIAL

Dear Members and Friends, The year 2014 was a very important, exciting and successful one for the IMZ International Music + Media Centre: After 30 years we have moved the Avant Première Screenings from midem in Cannes to Berlin and founded our own and internationally unique trade-fair for performing arts films, the Avant Première Music + Media Market in Berlin. Thanks to all dedicated IMZ members and friends who have contributed to this event it was a huge success, already in its first edition! We had the opportunity to welcome more than 320 participants from all over the world, started a cooperation with EFM/Berlinale and thereby strengthened the position of both performing arts films in the international film industry and the IMZ itself! For successfully implementing joint projects, initiatives and events such as the video library & special lecture at Classical:NEXT, the International Emmy® Awards Semi-Final Judging, a special IMZ session at the IAMA Media Day, the Film Festival at Wiener Rathausplatz, open air made-to-measure music film festivals for the general public in Brno, Yekaterinburg and Curitiba, industry film screenings and the 2nd edition of the IMZ Academy at ITF Golden Prague Festival, the IMZ World Music Film Screenings at WOMEX, a lively exchange with Opera Europa at their Autumn Conference in Brno and many more – it takes trustworthy and valuable cooperation partners, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude, our sincere thanks for having once again made an important contribution to promoting and fostering the cause of the IMZ. If not for their support as well as the support of all our IMZ members, the IMZ could not look back on such a successful year that has led us into a new era. Therefore, on behalf of the IMZ board members and our creative and hard-working IMZ team in Vienna: Thank you for another wonderful year! As for now, we are preparing and heading for the 2nd and even larger edition of Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin 2015, with an extended programme from Avant Première Screenings presenting the latest 550 programmes of 70 companies worldwide to panel discussions tackling industry relevant topics or a special presentation by Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institut presenting TIME Lab to the public. Last but not least we are proud to welcome big names of the scene to Avant Première’s Special Screenings: tenor Placido Domingo, conductor Daniel Barenboim and stage director Phillipp Stölzl as well as the 2Cellos Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser will be presenting their latest films in person. Therefore we are already looking forward to seeing you at Avant Première Music + Media Market Berlin 2015 and at one or the other interesting IMZ event in the upcoming year! Best wishes,

Arild Erikstad IMZ President

IMZ AT INTERNATIONAL PALADINO MEDIA FILM FESTIVAL AT THE CURITIBA BIENNIAL – FICBIC CYCLIST SQUARE OPERA HOUSE 15 November 2014 | Curitiba, Brazil

Just as the paladins in ancient history were those who protected the Good against the Evil, the team of paladino media aims to protect music and musicians. Besides the three record labels paladino music, Orlando Records and Austrian Gramophone, the company also runs a CD distribution division for the Austrian market, its own web store and the sheet music publishing brand paladino music. The company’s philosophy is a holistic approach towards artists’ projects, to provide services from curating artistic content to publishing, distribution and PR. Company owner and CEO Martin Rummel is not only an internationally renowned musician himself, but also a passionate advocate for classical music in general. He is a member of the board of Austria’s Independent Labels’ Association VTMÖ and president of the association of the Austrian classical music producers. Besides the knowledge of its own team, paladino media relies on a strong international business network of affiliates. www.paladinomedia.com

On 15 November, Brazil’s Proclamation of the Republic holiday, the International Film Festival at the Curitiba Biennial – FICBIC celebrated with a more than special screening: the opera Carmen, conducted by Andris Nelsons. In partnership with both, the Austrian Embassy and the IMZ, FICBIC promoted the first ever outdoor Opera screening in Curitiba. The screening took place at Cyclist Square, located right in the heart of the city and second home to an alternative crowd, always inclined to new experiences. Carmen also attracted to the Square opera fans and students of music from all over the city. About a hundred people were expected to show up, but due to the cold weather, few of them saw the screening until the end. Those who did, of course, were mesmerized and are hoping to see more opera shows in the next editions of the Festival…

STOCKHOLM CONCERT HALL & ROYAL STOCKHOLM PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (RSPO) was founded in 1902 and with its already rich history, continues to perform to international critical acclaim under its current Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor Sakari Oramo. The Stockholm Concert Hall is world famous for hosting the annual Nobel Prize Concerts attended by both, the Nobel Laureates and the Swedish Royal Family. Recent guest artists have included Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming and Riccardo Muti. Even though mastery of the vast classical symphonic repertoire is the core objective of the RSPO, the orchestra actively strives to renew and broaden the range of music available for a symphony orchestra through annual new music festivals and commissions of new pieces. The RSPO presents two annual festivals – the Stockholm International Composer Festival and the Composer Weekend, the latter focusing exclusively on contemporary Swedish composers.

Conducting the Bavarian Radio Chorus and Symphony Orchestra, Mariss Jansons transforms the Golden Hall of Vienna’s Musikverein into a heavenly anteroom. Verdi’s Messa da Requiem is in itself a work of superlatives: A towering structure of blazing brass, mighty choral masses and tour-de-force passages for four soloists, a work of deepest and most heartfelt intimacy, a mass for the dead without any mawkish undertones. (102205 / 108136)

It was a truly affecting and appropriate farewell – the spirit of Claudio Abbado was present in music, words, and silence. With a deeply moving concert the Lucerne Festival Orchestra paid tribute to this extraordinary man: “The emotional intensity was unbelievable; this could only be achieved by true musicians, by those capable of love.” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung) Friends and associates look back fondly on Claudio Abbado and speak of how they experienced these moments of grief and farewell. Music in the Air A Film by Reiner E. Moritz to celebrate 50 years of IMZ – International Music + Media Centre

Music on television has come in various guises over the last 5O years. It was already part of the programme mix at the very beginning and is still around, more sophisticated than ever, live and event driven and at it’s best reaching millions – at any rate more people than those experiencing music in opera houses, concert halls or other venues. Television has been instrumental in popularizing music, preserving precious moments of music making and helping to create music and performances which would not exist without it.
