Shooting has begun for a portrait of Colombian conductor Andrés OrozcoEstrada.

Pelléas Et Mélisande

Music Highlights For The Summer of 2013

At work, Andrés Orozco-Estrada cuts a dynamic figure. He communicates with his musicians with great intensity: His gestures range from large and powerful to minimal and delicate, reflecting the range of emotions and moods in the music they are performing. At rehearsals (with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the WDR Symphony Orchestra and the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna, where he is music director) he talks fast and with energy. In conversation, however, Andrés Orozco-Estrada is calm and modest. He thinks carefully before he speaks, whether the topic is great composers, Viennese desserts, or the fascinating way things work in Europe… In 1997, at the age of 19, Orozco-Estrada left Colombia to study in Vienna. As a child in Medellín he studied violin and began conducting when he was 15. His mix of big emotion and clear structure is remarkable and has contributed to his swift rise to fame. Filmfritz are spending two years with Orozco-Estrada; they will accompany him on a trip back home to Colombia; and they will be there with their camera when he takes up his new jobs as music director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Contact: Nina Hetzer, TV producer hetzer@filmfritz.de www.filmfritz.de

Debussy’s opera Pelléas et Mélisande opened the 2008-2009 season at La Monnaie. At the time, director Pierre Audi received much praise for the way in which he visualized the uncanny, mysterious dream world of Maurice Maeterlinck (on whose eponymous play the opera is based). With the action taking place on and around an abstract sculpture by British artist Anish Kapoor, Audi immersed the opera in an explicit sensual atmosphere. La Monnaie has put Pelléas et Mélisande back on the programme this April, with chief conductor Ludovic Morlot at the helm of La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra. The entire opera is to be seen on www.lamonnaie. be from 4 until 24 May.

Vincenzo Bellini: La Straniera, 140 min. HD It was in 1968 when she made her debut as Rosina at the National Theater in Bratislava. 45 years later, the great Edita Gruberova sang Bellinis rarely performed opera La Straniera at Vienna Musikverein. The brilliance of her voice and her techniques enchanted the audiences and lead to standing ovations – the same success as after the debut-performance of her Straniera at Philharmonie im Gasteig in 2012. Gioacchino Rossini: La Cambiale di Matrimonio, 80 min. HD This early masterpiece of Gioacchino Rossini speaks as a prelude to other Rossini one-act operas and foreshadows what is to come in his later works: strong stage instincts and a psychological understanding of his characters. The intimate setting of the Vienna chamber opera is particularly well suited to underline this brilliant oeuvre.

The first group of well-known artists this year consists of soprano Karita Mattila, bassbaritone Luca Pisaroni and Austrian percussion virtuoso Martin Grubinger, who will perform together with the Tonkünstler under Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
