Our aim is to strengthen the connection with the audio-visual sector following a long, strategic perspective. We look positively forward to Berlin, in February – “the place to be” for everyone active in the audio-visual sector. The IMZ Avant Première Screenings will take place at Scandic Hotel Berlin three days earlier than announced before!! Thus, all the screenings, meetings, the stands, the networking, sleeping and eating will take place in one central location, from 9 – 12 February 2014, and the Berlinale is just around the corner... Don’t book your flight back too early: on 12 February, we will have a fancy closing event at Radialsystem Berlin, in cooperation with ARTE. Of course, special rates for hotel rooms have been organised for IMZ members! The theme Wagner Greenhouse includes musical theatre, opera, plays, concerts, exhibitions, debates and much more. The Swiss National Museum takes part with a special exhibition showing two films about the life and works of composer Richard Wagner. Richard Wagner (1813 –1883) lived in Zurich from 1849 to 1858. His escape to Switzerland, his life in the exile, his relationship to Mathilde Wesendonck and many of his activities, are shown in the TV film Wagner by Tony Palmer. Richard Burton plays Richard Wagner. The Operavox animation by Graham Ralph is modern animation technique that distills the music and stories of the worlds most famous operas into 30-minute films. From The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra: Prinsengracht Concert

Alban Berg: Lulu Alban Berg’s second opera Lulu was premiered in 1937 in Zurich, incomplete, because Berg had died unexpectedly during the composition process. Due to the controversial material and the exceedingly difficult vocal parts, Lulu was not performed regularly for a long time – and the Austrian premiere took place 25 years after the world premiere. Evelyn Lear gives a breathtaking performance of Lulu. At her side the German baritone Paul Schöffler and heroic tenor Rudolf Schock give highly appraised interpretations of Dr. Schön and his son Alwa. The conductor of this Austrian premiere is maestro Karl Böhm. (101687)

Japan in 1993. Directed by Götz Friedrich and conducted by Jirí Kout, this interpretation of the adulterous love between the Cornish knight Tristan and the Irish princess Isolde was a great success. The score of Tristan und Isolde has often been cited as a landmark in the development of Western music because of Wagner’s advanced use of chromaticism, tonality, orchestral colour and harmonic suspension. René Kollo and Gwyneth Jones give brilliant performances and prove once again, why they belong to the world’s best Wagner singers. Available on Blu-ray for the first time! (108083/102317)

It’s that time of the year again when the Prinsengracht canal is glutted with boats, and crowds gather along the quay with their picnic baskets and rosé. Everyone enjoys the music performed at the traditional Prinsengracht Concert. Adding even more sparkle to its 125th anniversary celebrations, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is for the first time the main attraction at this popular open-air event. Teaming up with the orchestra is the Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, who is sure to enrapture audiences with a number of well-loved arias, including the celebrated “Nessun dorma” from Puccini’s Turandot. The orchestra will also be performing Tchaikovsky’s always-spectacular 1812 Overture. Antonio Pappano will conduct the programme. Live on August 24th, 2013 Length: approx: 60’ Production: AVRO

JOSEPH HAYDN: Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons): The great conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt takes the podium to lead the Vienna Philharmonic and a cast of high-class singers joined by the Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus in Haydn’s oratorio Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons). Haydn was led to write The Seasons by the great success of his previous oratorio The Creation (1798), which had become very popular and was in the course of being performed all over Europe. In The Seasons man is portrayed as a part of nature and its cyclical transformations – clad in often onomatopoeic, immediately understandable sounds heeding Rousseau’s appeal to Return to nature! – an appeal that has long acquired new urgency in our times. Save ORF musikprotokoll! As part of ORF’s cost-cutting measures announced in midJune it became known that it is also planned to axe ORF musikprotokoll at steirischer herbst, Austria’s festival platform for contemporary and experimental music. From our point of view: Abandoning ORF musikprotokoll would mean the end of an important driving force of the Austrian and international new music scene. If you agree, please sign this petition to show your support for keeping ORF musikprotokoll!

45 years of musikprotokoll Founded by Emil Breisach in 1968, musikprotokoll is organised annually by ORF (Austrian Broadcasting). It is a co-production of its two stations, Radio Österreich 1 and Radio Steiermark, which broadcast the presented works in cooperation with the steirischer herbst festival (subsidised by the European Union). Functioning as a kind of laboratory, musikprotokoll invites the audience to embark on an exploratory journey to discover the latest developments and trends in music, with all the artistic risks that this entails. Dedicated to contemporary and experimental music and intermedia activities, the musikprotokoll programme features outstanding protagonists of current artistic trends and has always placed Austrian positions in an international context.
