And the official start of British Summer Time or at least Spring! It’s all happening this month, starting with Mothers Day on Sunday 6th, which also just happens to be the date that In and Around Magazines first launched eleven years ago. Easter also falls into March this year and in fact, Easter Sunday 27th at 1am is when we all should remember to put our clocks forward by one hour. I say should, as for the past two years, having reminded readers to do just that, I’ve actually forgotten to do it. March is also the month of my own birthday, and whilst the thought of becoming yet another year older, really doesn’t hold much appeal, I’m looking forward to a few celebratory drinks and a catch up with friends.

Does your job motivate you? MOST people fall in to their careers purely by accident. Suddenly they get to a stage in their lives when they think “How did I get here?” And “How did I end up doing this?” More often than not, it isn’t what they really wanted to do in the first place and it seems almost impossible to think about doing something else now. So, they continue along the path they were on at the risk of becoming more and more dissatisfied with their own career choice. COULD THIS BE YOU? What is important to remember, is YOU choose your career direction – it is not made for you it is created  BY you. Everything you have done until this very moment, whether it has been a conscious or unconscious decision, has been your decision. The biggest and bravest decision to make now is whether to continue on this path or take a different direction. To find out if you are doing the right job, ask yourself these 3 simple questions: 1. If all jobs paid the same, what job would I do? 2. If I knew I couldn’t fail, what job would I do? 3. If I was given a magic wand and could create the job of my dreams, what would it be? These questions give us permission to dream, to knock down the barriers we create for ourselves and to be open and honest with ourselves about what we really want. WHAT DO YOUR ANSWERS SAY ABOUT YOU? If you are doing a job that really interests, motivates and inspires you, not only will you enjoy it and feel happier than you ever have, but you will ultimately become a success! Studies show that success does not necessarily translate in to financial reward (thought it’s always nice!) but is about doing some

thing you enjoy, that gives you a sense of satisfaction and personal reward. If your answers are indicating you are not doing something you want to do and you would like to do something different, well, why not start exploring what that might look like and think about how you can achieve it? Career Coaching is about helping people to explore their transferable skills and identify what motivates them. It’s about exploring all the options and eliminating many of the barriers preventing them from realising their career potential. Here’s another little exercise you can try for yourself... Draw your ‘personal life line’ from left to right on a page and mark an “X” to show where you are on that line now. How far along the line is the “X”? Consider what you have achieved until now and think about how much time has passed? What jobs have you done? What did you enjoy and what were your successes? Next, look at what remains on the right of the “X”. Ask yourself, what do you want to achieve? How much time do you have to achieve that? If your earlier answers to the 3 questions indicated you’re not doing a job that really makes you happy, then perhaps it’s time to start thinking about what you would like to do and how you might be able to achieve it. Career Coaching is not an overnight fix, and magic wands are in short supply. However, if you really want to change – you can. You are in control of your own career and ultimately you can always change direction. Remember you only get so many trips around the sun, so make the most out of your life!

arch 17th is St Patrick's Day - a celebration of all things Irish - and people around Ireland and throughout the world will commemorate it with a pint or two of Guinness, Ireland's unofficial national intoxicant, with more than a 25% share of the beer market.

soared from 350,000 barrels in 1868 to over a million eighteen years later. However, by the 1970s sales were in decline and the company decided to make Guinness Extra Stout 'more drinkable', resulting in a brand re-launch in 1981 with pale malt being used for the first time.

Arthur Guinness founded the brewery that makes the famous drink. Born in 1725 in County Kildare, Arthur inherited £100 at the age of 27 from his godfather, and three years later he set up business as a brewer. In 1759 he signed a 9,000 year lease on a disused brewery in St James Gate, Dublin where he began brewing porter and ale.

Contemporary Guinness Draught and Extra Light Stout are weaker than their 19th Century counterpart, with Foreign Extra Stout and Special Export being closer to the original in character. Modern Guinness has a burnt flavour and is famous for its smoothness and thick, creamy head.

Porter is a dark, well-hopped beer made from brown malt. Its history is closely intertwined with that of stout, a term which originally referred to a beer's strength but which now refers to the drink's body and colour. Today's Guinness is a dry stout available in a number of variants and strengths, including Guinness Draught, Guinness Original/Extra Stout, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Guinness Special Export Stout and Guinness Bitter. It is nicknamed 'the black stuff' on account of its dark colour, although it is actually a very dark shade of ruby! Now brewed in 60 countries and available in over 120, the first Guinness export was to England in 1769 and by 1824 it had become a worldwide brand. Sales 

The production of Guinness continues to change with the times. In November last year the company announced plans to make their beer suitable for vegetarians and vegans by the end of 2016, through the introduction of a new filtration process that will avoid the need to use isinglass from fish bladders. Claims have been made in the past that Guinness can benefit the heart by helping to prevent harmful deposit build-up on artery walls. It has also been described as a 'meal in a glass', and at 198 calories per pint, has slightly fewer calories than skimmed milk, orange juice and most other light beers. So, I wish you a happy St Patrick's Day, filled with friends, fun, smiles and a drop of the black stuff!

Crufts 2016 By Susan Brookes-Morris

Crufts, the world’s largest dog show takes place between 10th & 13th March at the NEC Birmingham. the first of the ‘Crufts’ Dog events took place in 1891 at the royal Agricultural Hall in Islington. It was the brainchild of Charles Cruft, hence the name. After college, Charles worked for the well-known dog food company Spratts, initially as an office boy and later as a travelling salesman across Europe. In 1878 he was asked by french dog-breeders to promote the canine section of the Paris Exhibition. Back in England, he managed the Allied Terrier Club Show at the royal Aquarium, Westminster in 1886. He launched Crufts five years later. When Charles died in 1938, his wife Emma took over the running of the show. she handed the mantle to the Kennel Club in 1948. the first event had 2,437 entries representing 36 breeds. this year’s show will see over 22,000 dogs competing from around 43 countries. the event is truly international since quarantine laws were lifted in the year 2000. the ultimate accolade, Best in show has been contested for 87 years, and won by 43 different breeds. the most frequent champion breed with seven wins is the cocker spaniel, followed by the Irish setter and Welsh terrier which have each taken four titles. the first ever winner was a greyhound and the 

2015 winner was a five-year-old russian scottish terrier called Knopa. Winners receive a replica silver trophy and a small cash prize, but it is the prestige and future stud-money that are the real attraction. In addition to the Best in show and Best in Breed awards, there are now many other competitions including scruffs - for crossbreeds. Visitors can also enjoy the spectacle of activities such as fast-paced flyball, skillful agility and heelwork to music. In many of the competitions there are junior as well as adult classes. Attendees also look forward to seeing famous names such as celebrity vets and tV personalities known for their love of dogs. there is a wealth of shopping opportunities with over 400 exhibition stands. And for those thinking of purchasing a dog the Discover Dogs section features examples, advice and information from owners of around 200 breeds. Over the last decade £138,000 has been raised from dog exhibitors for the Kennel Club’s charitable trust which distributes money to dog re-homing, assistance dog charities, and funds research into the understanding and prevention of dog diseases. Huge efforts are now made to ensure all dogs in the show are healthy following previous concerns about welfare. Crufts is a great day out, and for dog-lovers it’s not to be missed!

he first day of spring this year is officially March 20th. Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hardprune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past. Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade. If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems.

Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore. Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! 

GARDENING

Lovely Lilies

Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony. There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over.

Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multipurpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am. Rachel Leverton

Addictive FitBit By Kate Duggan

Want to make sure you’re completing your 10,000 steps a day, or looking to improve your training? an activity tracker can help. the FitBit is probably the best known brand on the market, with several models to choose from: the entry level Zip, at around £50, tracks your steps, distance walked and calories burned. “So it’s a fancy pedometer then?” I hear you ask. Well, yes, basically, but it’s more responsive and you can sync it to your computer or smartphone to see your activity presented as a graph. this makes it much easier to monitor your activity levels over time and track you progress. the Zip also acts as a watch, and there are various other extras, such as the ability to log your food intake. Feel like you’re getting your full eight hours of sleep, but still feel tired? You might want to opt for One or Flex, which track your sleep as well as your activity. they also have silent alarms, to wake you up, but not your partner. One clips onto your clothing, while Flex is worn like a watch. there are some differences in what they offer – Flex doesn’t have a clock, for example. Charge is similar to Flex, in that you wear it like a watch, but it comes with some added extras, such

as a clock. If your phone is nearby and it rings, the caller ID will come up on the Charge display. It also has a better battery life, of up to 10 days. Charge HR is designed for people who work out regularly, as it can recognise different exercises, and has an automatic heart3rate monitor to help maximise your training. top of the range is Surge, at around £200. It’s been designed for people who are really serious about their sports performance, and want to monitor every aspect of their training. For instance, you can track the route you’re running using GPS. You can also control music and read texts that come through to your smartphone. So which one to go for? Well Zip is a great choice if you just want to check whether you’re walking those recommended 10,000 steps a day. If you cycle, run, or enjoy another sport, you’ll want to opt for a more advanced model. now, a warning... It is possible to get ever so slightly obsessed with the FitBit. You can easily find yourself checking it hundreds of times a day, which can distract you from real life, and you can find yourself pushing ever harder, unnecessarily. On the positive side, it does encourage you to increase your activity levels and build up your fitness. Like so much in life, the key is moderation. Tempted? then visit the website www.fitbit.com

How private are personal emails and social posts in the office?  by Harry Abrams Solicitor, employment team IBB Solicitors harry.abrams@ibblaw.co.uk



Many employees are concerned about recent news headlines warning that social media chat and email conversations at work are open to being read by the boss, following a recent ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. But the headline writers have missed the point. In fact, the ruling (in Bărbelescu v Romania) puts greater pressure on employers to justify any monitoring of private messages, rather than any relaxation. The ruling did say that companies have a right to monitor internet usage by employees during working hours, but only under very clear circumstances. In this case, an employee had been fired for using an instant messaging service for personal messages, in breach of his employer’s policy. Mr Bărbelescu had created a Yahoo Messenger account at his employer’s request so he could respond to enquiries from clients, but when the employer monitored the chats over a week-long period, personal messages were found, and his employment was terminated. Following a number of court hearings in Romania, the case went to the European Court to decide whether the employer’s actions had breached Mr Bărbelescu’s right to respect for his private life and correspondence under Article 8(1) of the European Convention of Human Rights (Article 8). The ECtHR ruled that Article 8 applied, so if the employer did look at the Yahoo Messenger chats, it had to be proportionate to the situation. They ruled that because of the particular circumstances in this case there was no violation of Article 8, as it was not unreasonable for an employer to verify that employees are completing their professional tasks during working hours. The decision relied, importantly, on what Mr Bărbelescu had told his employer, which was that the account contained client-related communications only.

This ruling doesn’t give any new powers to employers. Rather, it emphasises that workplace monitoring should only take place under very controlled circumstances and must not go beyond what is proportionate. It’s not enough to simply tell employees that monitoring will be taking place. Employers who monitor internet, email or social media usage are processing personal data and so they must comply with data protection requirements. Policies should be in line with the Employment Practices Code from the Information Commissioner, which requires employers to give a reason for any monitoring, set out how the information will be used, who will have access to it and how it will be safeguarded. Where policies are strict in setting out no personal usage, this can be easier to implement than allowing for limited personal use, where the boundaries need greater definition. One option is to encourage employees to use their own devices for private use, but that requires a clear BYOD - ‘bring your own device’ - policy alongside. With BYOD, employees may also need reminding that unless they use their own data connection, any content that uses company wi-fi could be monitored, if that’s the policy. The important thing is to get the balance right between the rights of the employee and those of the employer. Employers must not view this ruling as a carte-blanche excuse for a fishing expedition but it can gain some comfort that if their policies are drafted carefully and the circumstances require it, they may be permitted to review their employees’ emails to confirm their suspicions.

Are your policies fit for today’s workplace? Pragmatic, plain English advice on employment law and what it means for you.

IT is at this time of the year, that I feel I should be in the garden most days doing something, however what should we actually be doing that benefits the garden and does not hinder it? Is it too early to prune? Fork the lawn? Top Dress? Confusion.com! I thought it would be a great time to ask RCHS Autumn Show Rose Winner Rod Pengelly to give us some of his extensive knowledge on ‘The Fantastic English Rose’. So it is over to Rod. See you next month...

Warren

HELLO Gardening Enthusiasts, you still have time to plant Roses in pre-prepared beds, but only early this month as roses need time to put on root growth before hot and dry periods. November is the best time to plant a new Rose. Hold off pruning just now, we can still get hard frosts which will damage newly pruned shoots. So, wait until early April to prune when the threat of severe cold weather is over. I grow exhibition HT Roses, I prune them down to 2-4 buds from the ground, new bushes should also be pruned in this way. However, established bushes for the garden may be moderately pruned. Thin, damaged or any broken branches, and any crossing over should be trimmed or cut out. Try to end up with a clear middle, as this helps air flow, then cut the strong stems by about half.

All photographs shown here were taken at the 2014 RCHS Autumn Show by Rod PPengelly.

Floribunda Roses - Moderate pruning is the basis, however hard prune some old stems, which ensures a longer flowering period. ALL strong red stems from the base must be kept as they will produce the good flowers later in the year. You cannot buy any plant, plonk it in the ground, then moan when it does not do well, new roses need at least two years of care and attention until they have a good root run. They need to be watered but not water logged, and good feeding helps. In late March/early April feed one handful of fish blood and bone or Q4, you need to do this when the ground is wet or water it in. Then mulch to 2” deep with two-year-old manure. Spraying will also keep the roses healthy. VARIETIES TO TRY... CLIMBERS Dublin Bay - Red, constantly flowers. Gertrude Jekyll - Keep three strongest shoots cut the rest out, one of the strongest smelling roses, Heavenly. HTs There are so many, however Barbra Streisand is beautifully scented. A little tip with HTs, if you want large flowers, remove the side buds as soon as you can, if you want smaller flowers, leave them on. FLORIBUNDA ROSES Pinch out centre bud, then the flowers that remain will open at the same time. Good ones are... Absolutely Fabulous - Gold. Champagne Moment - Apricot/Cream. Marc Bolan - Purple to bright Pink. Doris Day - Yellow. THE WILDLIFE ZONE

 SAVINGDOLPHINS 

Andy Mydellton FLS (pictured right) is an environmentalist journalist, the founder and leader of the British wildlife charity, the Foundation for Endangered Species. They are members of the United Nations agency UNESCO with Andy Mydellton being Chairman and the Environmental Concern Advisor to the UNESCO Schools Group. Andy is a Fellow of the Linnean Society. He writes for many publications, mounts photographic exhibitions, gives presentations and broadcasts the 'Andy Mydellton Wildlife Zone' radio programme.

ANDY Mydellton went to the River Amazon where he monitored and swam with the rare and endangered Pink River Dolphin or Boto. This wonderful animal has evolved over the millennia to live only in the River Amazon and its tributaries.



The Foundation for Endangered Species (FES) runs the ‘Sponsor a Wild Animal’ scheme which is intended to fund the charity’s work in protecting River Dolphins from extinction. John Randall, a government minister has loved birds, animals and places of wonder throughout his life, as indeed has all members of his family. But despite his huge and important workload, he still has enough energy to support the aims and activities of FES. As FES is a member of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) the charity supported the two UN’s themed years entitled ‘The International Year of Biodiversity’ and ‘The International Year of Forests’ with major photographic exhibitions. John Randall opened them, and during his visits he said that “Saving the dolphins is important for conservation, and the world will be worse off without them”. The Boto is one of five endangered species of river dolphin in the world. The Ganges river dolphin that lives in India and Nepal is also experiencing survival difficulties. Sadly, in China the Yangztse river dolphin was recently declared to be extinct, as they have not been seen for some years. River dolphins can only live in the same river systems in which they are presently found. This is largely because they have evolved with this quality and type of water. Secondly, their diet varies little and their prey species are usually endemic to that river system. Dolphins cannot live in sewerage or chemically contaminated rivers but need clean water of the correct acidity or alkalinity. Therefore pollution is a great danger for these mammals. Moreover, the fish they eat must also be clean and chemical free. Otherwise the toxic flesh of their prey builds up in their bodies over the years as it does in all predators. When this happens it is a difficult and long term problem to overcome. Therefore we need to ensure that these river systems are kept clean, and that overfishing by local communities do not reduce the available prey for these fantastic creatures. FES has also been to Nepal and will be working with our Nepalese partners to help keep these rivers clean and in good condition.

SPONSORARIVERDOLPHIN Sponsoring a River Dolphin costs £20pm or £240pa. Sponsorship is also available for other animals; a Dragonfly or Butterfly at £3pm or £36pa; a Macaw or Hawk at £10pm or £120pa. A letter, photograph, badge and regular newsletters are part of these sponsorship packages. They make excellent Christmas presents, birthday or general gifts as well as making a big difference in the world. All members of FES are volunteers, and no-one earns any money from this scheme.

River dolphins are not as well known as ocean dolphins. So to help their cause, FES is raising awareness of their plight throughout the media.
