๏๏๏ ๏๏๏๏ ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ July felt very much as though it was taken over by my daughter Samiโs 17th birthday, with her giving me a constant daily countdown from the beginning of the month. As it fell on a Monday, celebrations and bbqโs commenced on the Friday and by Tues๏ฏ day I was exhausted! Itโs only now, as Iโm writing this, I realise that she was just a tiny five year old when I first started the magazines and was sharing with readers the various joys and challenges of having a small child in the house whilst trying to work and keep her entertained. whilst much has changed, keeping her entertained has suddenly resurfaced. The tv and xbox have suddenly lost their appeal and come second to her wanting me to accompany her for numerous practice drives in her car. Driving ๏ฏ her new obsession!

Iโve never been to a festival before in my life and whilst I donโt think Iโm hardcore enough for Glaston๏ฏ bury, Iโve got to say Iโm now a convert. Definitely a repeat for me next year. Kitten season continues and our cattery is full to bursting with homeless cats and kittens who have come into our care. Most had been abandoned, and wouldnโt have survived if they hadnโt been brought to us by one of our inspectors or by mem๏ฏ bers of the public. Our staff and volunteers are working all hours to care for them. Now the chal๏ฏ lenge is to find permanent homes for them. Betty is a beautiful tabby looking for a calm, loving home with a sympathetic owner, who she can learn to trust. She is still wary of men so an understanding female owner would be best. Sheโd be happy as a house cat, or in a quiet country spot, with lots of lap time, stroking and affection, and we think sheโd prefer it if there werenโt any other cats in the house๏ฏ hold. Travelling Abroad This Year?
Whatโs the best way to spend your money?
It used to be a simple choice between travellerโs cheques or cash, but now thereโs a variety of cards that offer more convenience and security when spending money abroad. In fact there are so many, it can be a bit of a minefield when trying to choose the right one. Travellerโs Cheques Good old-fashioned travellerโs cheques can be useful as a backup. Fee levels and exchange rates vary greatly according to the country youโre in, however, and also between individual banks. Pros โข Handy if you donโt want to carry large amounts of cash. โข Can be replaced within 24 hours if theyโre lost or stolen. Cons โข Exchange rates can fluctuate widely, and are generally poor when compared with other payment methods. โข You pay a fee when you buy them, and also commission when theyโre exchanged. PrePaid Cards Some of the newer prepaid cards offer very competitive exchange rates, as well as extra features such as a smartphone app. A word of warning though - there have been problems accessing money abroad using some prepaid cards, as itโs not always made clear that the first ๏ง๏
time you use the card, it has to be at a cash point. Pros โข Theyโre pre-loaded, so itโs easier to budget and you can lock in a good exchange rate. โข Convenient and easy to use, but check the rules carefully. Cons โข If the card is lost or stolen you may be charged for a replacement. โข Some providers charge high fees. CrediT Cards Still one of the most popular ways to spend money abroad, credit cards give you interestfree credit as well as valuable consumer protection. You also have the same fraud protection as in the UK, so if the card is lost or stolen you should be covered. Pros โข Some protection for goods over ยฃ100 via Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. โข Theyโre safe and secure, but make sure payment is taken in front of you. Cons โข Thereโs a risk of fraud or โcloningโ if the card is taken out of sight when you pay. โข If you withdraw cash youโll be charged daily interest. debiT Cards You can use a debit card to pay for goods or withdraw cash abroad, but youโll probably have to pay a non-sterling transaction fee. Thereโs no daily interest on cash withdrawals, but you might be charged a cash machine transaction fee each time you use one. Pros โข Easily blocked if the card is
lost or stolen. โข Chip and pin protection. Cons โข No consumer protection as with credit cards. โข Charges can quickly add up if you withdraw cash regularly. Cash Although itโs not a good idea to carry lots of cash with you, youโll need to pay for some smaller items this way, and organising it before you go will save money. Bear in mind though, that insurance policies only cover around ยฃ200 to ยฃ500 of cash on average. Pros โข You can shop around for a good exchange rate before you go. โข Can be used anywhere. Cons โข May not be fully covered by your insurance policy. โข Not as safe as carrying a plastic card. Itโs a good idea to take some cash as backup for your plastic card(s) and travellerโs cheques, and buying it well before you leave means you can track down the best rates of exchange. https://www.moneyadvice service.org.uk/en/articles/travelmoney-options-cash-cards-andtravellers-cheques http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/credit-cards/prepaid-travelcards http://www.money.co.uk/travelmoney/what-is-the-best-way-tospend-abroad.htm http://blog.moneysavingexpert. com/2013/03/12/using-plasticoverseas-always-pay-in-euroseven-if-it-says-0-commission/

Home & Interiors Come Back๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ฉ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ ๏ To Carpet By Katherine Sorrell
๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ carpet fibres ๏ฅ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏
Modern carpet can be both practical and fashionable, offering an enormous choice of colour, pattern and texture. Why choose carpet? Carpet is soft and comfortable underfoot, absorbs sound, is non-slip and forgiving if you have a fall, and is insulating against heat loss and draughts; however, it may stain and wear. Regular vacuuming is the only maintenance carpet needs, but accidental spills can be hard to deal with, and itโs unlikely to last longer than stone, tiles or wood. choosing a carpet As a general rule, the deeper the pile and the more luxurious the finish, the greater care the carpet will need, while the shorter and denser the pile, the better it is likely to wear, meaning there is a tradeoff between softness and comfort against durability ๏ฆ๏๏
and resilience. Standard carpet descriptions are for light, moderate, general, heavy and extra heavy domestic use, which gives a good indication of suitability. So a hallway carpet should be very tough and classified for heavy domestic use, while a living room (general domestic) probably requires a luxury look combined with robust performance, and a spare bedroom could be more delicate. If you choose a carpet suitable for general use, you can lay it throughout to create a seamless look that pulls a decorating scheme together. Carpets are inadvisable in kitchens and bathrooms.
Ask your retailer for samples and take them home where you can see them in your own environment and light. If redecorating from floor to ceiling, choose the carpet first and ensure that the rest of the scheme co-ordinates - the floor is the largest visible area in a room, so itโs important to get it right. Donโt forget the cost of underlay and fitting and get your room professionally measured, and when replacing a carpet, always buy new underlay. This ensures your new carpet sits properly and wears evenly and can prolong its life by up to 40 per cent. image - Padstow candy spot carpet, ยฃ69.99 per square metre, Brintons, tel 0800 505055, www.brintons.co.uk.
Wool: Flame-retardant and compression resilient, wool is warm, soft, durable and does not soil easily. The best wools come from Britain and New Zealand. nylon: Extremely hard-wearing with the greatest abrasion resistance. It takes dye and stainresistance treatments well. polypropylene: Resistant to stains and abrasions, wears well and is value-for-money. Used mainly in plain twists, loop patterns and saxonies. polyester: Stain-resistant, light and bulky, with a lustrous appearance, mainly used in plain, thick saxonies. mixes: In order to enhance performance, give a particular feel or reduce price, the four fibres are blended together. The most common blends are 80% wool with 20% nylon (probably the ideal combination of softness and strength); 80% wool with 10% nylon and 10% polyester; and 50% wool with 50% polypropylene.
carpet pile
loop: Pile tufts are left uncut and can either feel smooth or are like natural flooring such as sisal and coir. Avoid if you have pets. cord: The loops are pulled tight against the backing, giving a very low pile. saxony: A deeper pile with a soft feel and appearance. shag: Extra-long pile. twist: A loop pile that uses yarn with a higher twist than usual to give a coarse, rugged surface. Velvet: A sheared, short pile with a smooth, luxurious finish.

MINI Countryman vs Skoda Yeti ๏ ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ข๏๏๏๏๏๏ ๏๏ฅ๏๏๏๏๏๏ญ๏๏๏๏ model range, whilst almost all are compatible with every Countryman model.
All MINIs have a distinctive and instantly recognisable look to them, and with the Countryman range, it carries this identifiable image into a stockier frame to give you more space and practicality. The stylish bodywork helps to make the Countryman a tantalising option in the CUV sector and with great additions and features to match, itโs difficult to see why you wouldnโt choose it. However, it has competition from Skodaโs Yeti, a CUV similar in size and price and both cars have their good elements. For starters, both models have had recent redesigns to create more space and alter their looks to be more modern and up-to-date. It has to be said that the Countryman certainly looks better than the Yeti, with the distinguishing features of the MINI range, such as the shape, the headlights and front grille, to make it truly stand out ๏ฆ๏๏
on the road. The size of both models also make them very practical, with the smaller Countryman offering 350 litres of space in the boot with the seats up, whilst the Yeti has only 66 litres more in a car 20cm longer and 10cm taller. This means you can get more for your money space-wise in the Countryman, especially as the range starts off cheaper than the Skoda. Customisability has also been a recent appeal of the MINI market, and with the Countryman this is no exception. With MINIโs design additions that can be fitted to the whole range, you can personalise your Countryman as much as you wish. Also you can fit satellite navigation, stereo system, leather trim and โRun-Flatโ tyres to your model; great options that can be added to any of the range. Good options arenโt as easy to come by on the Yeti, as the better choices to fit are only available further up the Yeti
To compete with the Yetiโs off-road capabilities in the Yeti Outdoor and more expensive models, MINI offers the โAll-4โ all-wheel drive system throughout the class. With a higher ride height and great grip on offer, the Countryman All-4 system will give you confidence both on and off road, with only a small premium on top of the twowheel drive versions. The Yetiโs base model is fitted with a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine producing 110hp, whilst the 1.6-litre in the One produces just 98hp. This doesnโt compromise much in speed with only a marginal difference in acceleration. Overall, with a wider variety of vehicle and equipment options, value for money and great 4x4 system, the MINI Countryman is the better option of the two, and with the great looking bodywork to encase you, why wouldnโt you want to drive it? The MINI Countryman is available from ยฃ17,105 for the One Countryman, with the top of the range 218hp John Cooper Works All-4 starting at ยฃ28,985. For more information on the Countryman or any other models in the MINI range, contact your nearest Inchcape MINI dealership.

๏ค๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ข๏ Far From The Madding Crowds Gadgets for going off the beaten track ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏
For many people, late summer is the perfect time to go off the beaten track and explore, whether thatโs by hiking, cycling or a combination of the two. And with the right gadgets you can be sure that youโll love to go a-wandering, no matter where youโre headed. If you like to listen to music, podcasts or ebooks when youโre roaming, or if you just fancy some music while you swim in a lake, waterproof headphones are a great idea: sets such as the X-1 Surge Mini (ยฃ35) are 100% waterproof to a depth of 12 feet, but donโt forget to buy a waterproof case for your iPod or phone: you can pick up a universal waterproof case for less than ยฃ10, although make sure you check the specs carefully: water resistant and waterproof are very different things, and the former is only designed to protect your device against accidents, not deliberately going underwater. If youโd rather drink water than swim in it, a refillable water bottle is a great investment. ยฃ14 gets you the leak-proof, durable Kleen Kanteen, while the ยฃ6 Snugpak is designed to be clipped to your ๏ฆ๏ฑ๏
backpack. If youโre on a city trip with a messenger bag, the Memobottle (around ยฃ22) is shaped like a book rather than a bottle so it wonโt make your bag all bulky. And of course, donโt forget the humble Thermos (from around ยฃ8), which is as good at keeping soup warm as it is at keeping water cool - a useful skill given the vagaries of the British weather. If you have fond memories of the Swiss Army Knife you might be interested to see its latest incarnation, the Victorinox Expedition Kit. At ยฃ135 itโs a lot of money for a knife, but then itโs a lot of knife for the money: not only does it have the usual blades and screwdrivers but it also includes a digital clock, a barometer, a compass, an altimeter and a thermometer. And of course you never know when you might need to get a stone out of a horseโs hoof. If youโd rather take even more technology with you, the Earl Backcountry Survival Tablet ($299, around ยฃ205) will start shipping in the second half of 2016 after smashing its fundraising target on Kickstarter. Itโs an Android-
based, ruggedised tablet with GPS, weather sensors and radio communication to ensure that you always know where you are and whatโs coming, and that youโre never out of contact with the outside world. Itโs a bit of an overkill for a walk round a park, but for more serious expeditions it could be a very valuable travelling companion. The use of an E-Ink screen and a built-in solar panel means it should last for ages too, although unfortunately E-Inkโs slower updating does rule out a game of Angry Birds after the dayโs travelling is over. If itโs even half as good as the Kickstarter campaign promises it could be really clever. Fancy a tent thatโs as techy as a tablet? The Heimplanet Cave inflates like an airbed, weighs just 5 kg and looks like it came from a spaceship. At ยฃ480 itโs a little on the expensive side, but the structure is puncture-proof and itโs actually quite affordable by inflatable tent standards. Images L to R: X-1 Surge Mini headphones; Memobottle A5 water bottle; ictorinox Expedition Kit; Heimplanet Cave tent

Beauty Beauty and the Beach by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk
Beauty buys to see you through those hazy summer days.
I admit it can be a bit of a faff rubbing in suntan lotion, so Iโm rather tempted by Colorescience Sunforgettable. With an SPF of 50 it gives great protection, but as itโs a loose mineral powder, you just brush it on. You can wear it on top of makeup and itโs available in three shades โ fair, medium and tan. For me, the price is the downside. At ยฃ41.50, itโs certainly not wallet-friendly. But it is supposed to last for ages, and avoiding the scratchy, sticky sand/lotion mix might just make it worth the price, see www.beautyproduct-online.co.uk.
๏ง๏๏๏๏๏ข๏ ๏ง๏๏๏๏๏ข๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ง๏๏๏๏๏ ๏ฅ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏
When it comes to packing for holidays, I tend to fill every last millimetre of my case. So I do like products that save space and weight. Lushโs shampoo bars do both. Plus, as theyโre solid bars, they can go in your hand luggage. There are a fair few to choose from, but my current favourite is Montalbano, ยฃ5.95, because of its fresh lemon scent. Iโll be the first to admit that Iโm not nearly as evangelical as I should be about applying suntan lotion, but I am trying to do better. The fact that every year more than 14,000 people in the UK develop a malignant melanoma is a pretty good motivator. As an extra incentive, UVA rays also lead to premature wrinkles and age spots, and they can penetrate skin even when itโs cloudy. So this summer, Iโm slapping on the suntan lotion. I tend to use factor 25, but on days when I can get away with an SPF of 15, I usually reach for Green Peopleโs Sun Lotion with Natural Tan Accelerator, ยฃ20. Itโs a great choice if you have sensitive skin (which I do), as itโs very gentle, so unlikely to irritate. Itโs also rich in seed oils, so leaves my skin feeling moisturised. The natural tan accelerator has been shown to increase tanning by up to 25% and can make a tan last much longer. ๏ฆ๏ง๏
A day in the sun can leave skin feeling dry and dehydrated. I tend to use cocoa butter for putting the moisture back, but I am looking forward to trying Vichyโs new Ideal Soleil After Sun, ยฃ13. Key ingredients include shea oil and blackcurrant seed oil, so itโs rich in omega fatty acids, which can really help to boost hydration. Whatโs more, you can use it on dry skin or in the shower. I love treating my toenails to a professional gel polish, but if I donโt have time, I always have a few nail polishes at home to choose from. Crabtree and Eveylnโs Nail Lacquer in Wisteria, ยฃ6, is at the top of my shopping list. Itโs just the right shade of blue to gives a good pop of colour, while being neutral enough to work with most outfits.

Prescription Drugs and New Drug Driving Laws: Are You Aware of the 8 Drugs and Their Limits? by Caroline Dunne Consultant, Road Traffic Team IBB Solicitors caroline.dunne@ibblaw.co.uk New drug driving laws and prescription medication
Unlike the drink driving offence, there have been no sentencing guidelines to assist the courts.
๏ฉ๏ง๏ง๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ ๏ซ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏
New legislation was introduced in March 2015 to deal specifically with drug driving offences.
The new legislation made it an offence to drive with 8 prescription medications above a prescribed limit and with 8 illegal substances. Drugalysers were also introduced to assist the police in implementing this offence. These drugalysers made it possible to test for cannabis and cocaine at the road side, and involve a saliva test. The detection of all other substances requires a blood sample to be taken, usually at the police station.
Between March 2015 - April 2016, 35 of the 43 police forces in England and Wales, reported 7796 arrests for drug driving - but it is not clear how many related to prescription drugs and how many to illegal substances.
Legal prescription drugs and threshold limit in the blood The 8 prescription drugs include: clonazepam 50ยตg/L diazepam 550ยตg/L flunitrazepam 300ยตg/L lorazepam 100ยตg/L methadone 500ยตg/L morphine 80ยตg/L oxazepam 300ยตg/L temazepam 1,000ยตg/L A driver will be found guilty of the offence of drug driving if they have one or more of the listed medications above the prescribed limits - unless they can prove that the medication and dose were set by a medical practitioner or that they followed instructions on an accompanying leaflet and that there was no impairment to driving. If a driver is convicted of drug driving they could receive: an unlimited fine disqualification from driving for a minimum of 12 months up to 6 months imprisonment
What are the penalties for drug driving? If youโre convicted of a drug driving offence in England and Wales, the punishment you face will depend on the severity of the offence you have committed. Causing an accident that results in damage to property, injuries to pedestrians or other road users or deaths will attract a much harsher sentence. A conviction for drug driving, without any other aggravating factors, will attract a minimum of a 1 year driving ban. You may also receive a fine (which is unlimited) and up to 6 months in prison. Being convicted of drug driving, regardless of the sentence you receive, will leave you with a criminal record and will also be recorded on your driving licence for 11 years. You may also find that a conviction for drug driving causes you problems such as increased vehicle insurance premiums, difficulty travelling to some other countries and problems finding employment, as your conviction will show on your driving licence.
Iโm facing a drug driving charge, what should I do? If youโve been told you are being charged with a drug driving offence, getting expert legal help at the earliest possible opportunity is the best way to maximise your chances of keeping your licence, as well as avoiding a criminal conviction or a custodial sentence. Even if the Police say you are not going to be charged with an offence immediately, it is still important to get advice from a qualified drug driving solicitor. This allows you to know what your options are in case you are charged, at a later date, as a result of the Police investigation.
At IBB Solicitors we have experience helping people facing drug driving charges. Please call Caroline Dunne on 01895 207214 for defence advice. Alternatively email: roadtraffic@ibblaw.co.uk

Many gardens are now looking a little tired, as summer flowers try hard to put on a reasonable show despite the tougher conditions and the fact that their season is drawing to a close. It is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees, as the soil tends to be fairly dry, so you canโt even make things look better with a shrub or two. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring - right now garden centres are starting to take delivery of huge quantities of fabulous bulbs, just ready for planting, and a sure fire way to get your garden looking fabulous in those first few months of next year, and indeed for years to come. Get down to the garden centre sooner rather than later, so that you can have the pick of the bunch. Many bulbs will actually start to put down roots at the back end of summer and into autumn, giving them a head start and ensuring a fabulous display in spring, so prompt planting is advisable. The ๏๏ง๏
๏ Plan Your ๏ Planting ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ by Pippa Greenwood ๏๏๏๏๏๏ข๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ ๏๏๏๏๏๏ฃ๏ ๏๏๏๏๏๏ only thing you need to delay is the planting of tulips; these are best planted in October to help them avoid a nasty infection called tulip fire. Donโt forget that many mail order catalogues are available and these have an even bigger array of bulbs, often including many of the more unusual varieties, so send off for a few of these to ensure you have something particularly special to enjoy - and to show off to your friends and neighbours! If ordering from catalogues you will need to get a move on, however, so send off for a few as soon as possible. Then enjoy putting your feet up with a cuppa and a pile of catalogues, ready to choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before you set off to the garden centre, take a look at your borders - and indeed anywhere else in the garden - and decide where you can cram in a few bulbs. Remember, the great thing is they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, and so they
can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of garden soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year. Many bulbs do really well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be under-planted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to plant in these tight spaces and that way youโll minimise damage to the existing plantsโ roots.
If you are new to using bulbs and feel unsure of what goes together, donโt feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and even some garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. Have you got a dull patch of lawn? Brighten it up in the

early months by planting some small bulbs. Things like crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you donโt have too much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of fullsized daffodils, but make sure that the grass beneath these trees or shrubs is not something you want to keep regularly mown, as you will have to wait for at least six weeks after flowering before you can safely remove the leaves of the daffodils. When choosing bulbs, always make sure they are in good condition before you buy. With a quick look through the packaging (bulbs are often hidden by large
quantities of sawdust or wood shavings) you should be able to find the bulbs itself. Avoid any which are showing even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or the presence of patches of bluish mould on their surface. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety so, if possible, choose really good sized plump ones.
you keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating.
๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ ๏๏๏๏๏๏๏ ๏๏๏๏๏๏ If you want to buy large quantities of the same variety, then it may be possible to buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. Ideally bulbs should be planted promptly, but if this isnโt possible make sure that
Next month Iโll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting!
