Dear Readers Welcome to the December issue of

Inside this month’s Christmas issue

In and Around Denham and the final magazine for 2019. As ever, it’s been a busy year here both on the work and personal front and whilst not without its challenges, things have mostly gone to plan and I even managed to take two holidays . Having spent the first five years of publishing the magazines, without any holidays whatsoever, this is a huge improvement as far as work/life balance goes. All that’s left now is to get the January issue ready for print, then scoot out last minute to do all the Christmas shopping. I still admire, or should I say envy, those who started back in November and have now smugly finished their purchases and wrapped them up with a whole month to spare. I’ll be lucky if I’m not still wandering around shops on Christmas Eve and frantically wrapping things up at bedtime. What I love most about Christmas is the lazy break between then and New Year. A whole week of no computer, telephone calls or the thought of falling behind with work. It’s as though the world stands still for a while and I can just lounge around in a chair, watching rubbish tv and eating mince pies. Here’s to no work for a whole week! Wishing you all a wonderful and peaceful Christmas. Until next year .Angela & Sammy

Dear Resident

December 2019

Well, as I’m writing this the leaves from the trees are laying thick on the ground due to the high winds and constant rain over the last couple of weeks. However, it is a fairly mild day today which is good news if you are going out for a walk to stretch your legs. We laid a wreath on behalf of Denham residents on Remembrance Sunday. It was a beautiful sunny day, and many turned up to hear what was a very moving sermon. Many of you know our Co-Clerk Roy, and we are sorry to tell you that he retired in November due to health problems. We are very grateful to Roy for the experience and dedication he brought to the role. Whilst we are currently recruiting to fill this role, you may experience delays in responses from our office staff, so please bear this in mind. Our thanks to those who responded to our plea last month for a Handyman to pick up on the work our current Handyman no longer has time for. Our Clerk is currently meeting the applicants and we hope to have someone in place soon whom we can call on. The Allotment Committee are still hard at work to improve the site in New Denham and have been successful in their application for some 60 hedge saplings that will be arriving next year to tidy up the frontage which suffered when some sickly trees had to be cut down earlier. Regrettably, no one contacted us following our plea for advice or interest in helping us plan to seed some areas with meadow flowers for next year, so we are currently having to go out to businesses for quotes in order that we maybe able to trial a couple of places, but we are still open to suggestions. Our events committee are trying to fix some dates ahead for our very popular ‘Sunday Tea Dance Social’ with Bingo and Dancing, which we hold in the New Denham Community Hall. As soon as these dates have been arranged, we will publish them here so that you can make a note in 12

your diary. They are also progressing plans we have for celebrating VE day next year which will be over the May Bank Holiday 2020. Many thanks to the Buckinghamshire Golf Club management who have once again agreed to donate a Christmas tree that they will erect on Denham Village Green and will be in place by the time you read this. Residents give their time to decorate this tree on the first weekend in December so that it is in place to switch on the lights before the Annual Carol singing. Please make a note in your diary to join in with this early evening Carol singing. We are still looking for funding opportunities towards buying our next two defibrillators that we would like to see located in Denham Green and Tatling End. If you work locally perhaps you could ask your boss if they would donate some funding to us for this purpose? We are also still looking for a volunteer who can spare a few hours once a week to give us some TYPING help in the office.

SAVE THE DATE: Friday 6 December, 6pm Denham Village Green Annual Christmas Carols, with a Brass Band and free Hot Chocolate for the youngsters! Friday May 8th to 10th 2020 VE Day Celebrations in Denham Get involved!! You are most welcome to attend our Monthly Parish Council Meetings that are held on the second Monday of every month (except August) in the Parish Office located at the rear of the Denham Village Memorial Hall off Cheapside Lane. If you are interested about the area you reside in and how we manage it, perhaps you would care to join one of our committees as an Associate to see if you are interested in a more permanent role?

Marilyn Heath Chairman, Denham Parish Council Our thanks to In and Around for hosting this page
