Dear Readers Welcome to the June issue of

Inside this month’s issue

In and Around Denham And it’s officially Summer! Our bbq has seen plenty of action, the pots are planted and baby granddaughter already has her own small paddling pool in the garden. We also couldn’t resist buying her a little pink tent. The moment I saw it, it reminded me of the days Sammy used to sit in my office with me, camped out in her little tent watching Dora the Explorer. I feel truly blessed to be able to re-live those wonderful times all over again. I hadn’t realised how quickly time passes and how much I’d missed having a small child to entertain. We even had a family day out at Beale Park, where we spent hours walking around and looking at all the different animals. Simple, enjoyable things that disappear from your life when children are no longer around. Now don’t get me wrong, we still enjoy a stroll down the pub for a vino, especially at the end of a long day, we simply now have an additional drinking partner. Fortunately the price of a round has remained the same, since she brings her own bottle! Until next month... Angela & Sammy

Harvil Road Safety (from the Harefield Protection Camp) By Sofia Kazi Harvil Road is a busy road, home to several heavy industries bringing a constant stream of HGV’s (heavy goods vehicles) for much of the day. It is also a hospital road leading to a lifesaving heart hospital in Harefield and well used by the other emergency services. Sadly, this road is notorious as an accident hotspot and fatalities have often prompted campaigners to request a reduction in speed limit. Road safety is of utmost concern to all who use it and should be especially so for the companies who share it. Not everyone it appears does share this concern and protesters on Harvil Road have regularly witnessed breaches in road safety at the HS2 works entrance (North gate). Almost every day during the Winter vehicles were seen leaving the compound trailing slippery mud along the road and yes it is still happening to this day. A dangerous activity as the reduction in surface friction causes wheels to lose surface grip and result in loss of vehicle control. Protesters have been documenting these incidents since last year and Louisa Ede, a local business woman has taken up the issue with Hillingdon Council she says, ‘In 2013 I was fined and shut down for a week when the council received a complaint of my vehicles leaving mud on the road. HS2 regularly leaves mud on Harvil road and far worse than in my experience, why is this continuing to happen?’

Another hazard frequently observed stems from the ‘illegal driveway’ created by HS2. This illegal driveway could never have obtained planning permission had HS2 been made to apply through the proper channels. On refusal of deliveries at the gate road safety logic would suggest allowing vehicles entry to turn around but they are forced to back out on the bend of the most dangerous part of Harvil road. HS2 security preferring to keep their gates firmly locked. Clearly there is room for improvement!

‘A calamity waiting to happen’

In addition to communications with Hillingdon Council, protesters have made HS2 well aware by raising these issues in the high court. Road safety evidence was served to HS2’s top international solicitors, Evershed and Sutherland, and witness statements containing evidence were also read out. Failing this the protestors have been directly After raising the matter with the council, a road requesting a road safety meeting with HS2 comcleaning unit is now being intermittently deployed munity liaison representative but four months later but protestors say this is hardly satisfactory when they are still waiting. the mud is sometimes left for days on end. HS2 have stated in their own document, Draft Code of HS2 subcontractor Murphy ltd are proud to display Conduct Practice, ‘appropriate wheel cleaning their latest pledge as “considerate contractors” measures will be employed to prevent the transfer stating their compliance to certain codes such as and accumulation of mud or other granular depos- ‘Respect the Community and Secure Everyone’s its on the highways.’ but HS2 are clearly failing to Safety’. If you have experienced any problems with HS2 road safety, we would like to hear from you. Arthur

Giant rabbits looking for loving homes Please say hello to our very handsome gentle giant Arthur! He is about 1 year old and a Continental Giant, one of the largest and oldest rabbit breeds. His previous owner had to give him up along with several of his younger family members, due to having too many to look after. All are now in search of loving homes, ideally with experience of caring for giant breeds. Arthur is a sweet and friendly boy as you would expect from a breed generally known for their intelligence and lovely laid back temperaments. In the right home, he will make a delightful pet. Naturally, the giant rabbits do require much larger accommodation than the smaller breeds, and also lots of safe secure space for daily exercise, play and foraging. Potential adopters should be prepared for the commitment needed to ensure that all health and welfare needs are met and be able to spare the time to provide company, stimulation and of course lots of love. Please get in touch if you could offer Arthur, or any of our baby giants, the perfect home.
