Dear Readers

Inside this Month’s

Welcome to the

issue

October issue of In and Around Denham Well, this month has been one of working away, whilst sitting on thorns awaiting the arrival of my new granddaughter. As nominated birth partner, I’m typing with one hand and preparing to grab the hospital bag with the other. I can’t really sum up my emotions at the moment excited? nervous? Wondering how I’ll cope with sleepless nights again at my age? Yes, all of those and more. At the same time, I find myself sneaking into the newly decorated nursery, peaking through the wardrobe of tiny pink outfits and remembering back to the time when I first started the magazines, with Sammy being just a small child playing in the room by my desk. At the time of writing this, there are only three days to go, although it’s never an exact science, so who knows when this small person will make her appearance. For all parents and grandparents out there, half term week is this month and Iver Flowerland have a great line up of activities to keep them occupied. (See page 45). Also treat yourself to a visit to their Oktoberfest on Saturday 14th (Centre pages). last year’s event was fantastic! Happy Halloween!

The RSPCA Hillingdon, Slough, Windsor, Kingston and District Branch Registered Charity No: 263515

Charlotte Our charity shops and donations are our lifeline to animal welfare, without the income from our shops and donations we would not be able to help the 10k+ animals that come through the Hillingdon clinic each year. Local animals rely on these so any help anyone could offer would be appreciated.

Tara supervised outside to ensure she doesn't get to any difficulty getting in and out of gardens and over fences etc. Charlotte would love a home as an only pet so she can get all the love and attention. Can you offer Charlotte the home she needs?

The Safe Place scheme gives vulnerable people a short term 'Safe Place' to go if they are feeling confused, scared or upset when out and about in their local town. Shops, businesses and public buildings who are a Safe Place will display the Safe Place sticker in their window. If a vulnerable person seeks help, members of staff would be expected to make a phone call if necessary (emergency contact details will be carried on their Safe Place member card), provide a temporary safe haven for them and also to reassure them and keep them safe until help and support arrives.

How do I get a Safe Place Member Card? Please call the Community Safety Team - 01494 586535 or email communitysafety@chiltern.gov.uk and we will send a card out to you. Please note it is not essential for you to have a card to be able to access this service but it will help if you have an emergency contact number for the staff to help you out.

I would like my business to be a part of the scheme but what will I need to do? Businesses that wish to register their interest in the scheme can contact the Community Safety Team. Businesses should have two or more employees on the premises at any given time in order to handle situations presented to them while still being about to maintain business as usual. Once signed up, businesses will receive a list of contact details so that the employees know who they can contact if a vulnerable individual presents themselves. 34

Dear Resident,

2017 10

Firstly, we would like to say an enormous thank you to all those residents who came to one of the three meetings we held in September. We asked for YOUR VIEWS and PRIORITIES and it was very gratifying that many of you responded by attending one of the meetings. We felt they were a big success and gave us an opportunity to exchange views and concerns. Thank you. May we remind you there were questionnaires to complete (groan), and your answers will help us present the information you have given to form part of our budgeting exercise next month. We do hope that those of you who took away the questionnaires to complete at home will return them to us by the end of this week. We were asked in one of the meetings to print information relating to numbers and email addresses for your complaints, and this is being prepared for the next edition. From the questions raised at all meetings, most of your concerns centred around litter, poor roads, uneven pavements, flooding and unlit walkways. A huge thanks to Wayne Fabian our Local Area Technician from Transport for Bucks. Wayne gave up his evening to attend our third meeting last night. We felt his contribution really gave residents a better insight in understanding the conflicting priorities there were on the highways budgets and the constant juggling act needed to meet the most urgent needs. As Wayne pointed out in response to a complaint about how many days 62

it took to get a fallen tree moved after a stormy night, one storm brought 80 trees down and they can’t all be moved at the same time. Would you volunteer to assist in keeping your area tidy? Wayne told us that in some areas the residents not only had regular litter picking groups to help keep their area tidy, but also groups that were prepared to clear footpaths. Also, a gentle reminder that we need people who are willing to give up a few hours a week or month to help others in their community. We received a very heart rendering letter from someone who was obviously in need of a helping hand but didn’t have anyone to turn to. Let’s not forget that there are some people who do not have the benefit of friends and family living nearby. Our Neighbourhood Planning Working Party, chaired by local resident, Alan Head, needs residents who want to get involved, so please let us know if you are interested. And finally, a big thank you to our office staff, Jane, Roy and Susan for the enormous support and effort they put in to organise our meetings. The Parish Council meets on the 2nd Monday of every month (except August) at 19:30 in the Parish Office, Rear of Denham Village Memorial Hall, Village Road, Denham, and residents are always welcome to attend but there is no entry once the meeting begins. Marilyn Heath Chairman, Denham Parish Council Our grateful thanks to In and Around Denham for providing this platform for us
