Dear Readers Welcome to the April issue of In and Around Denham It’s officially Spring Time, the clocks have gone forward, the nights are feeling a lot shorter and no one could be happier about that than me. At last there are still a few hours left at the end of the working day, to come out of office hibernation and be able to see the great outdoors. Winter always feels long to me and although it’s a great time to catch up on numerous tv series and veg out on the sofa, enough is enough. Even my six month old granddaughter has developed a huge fascination for a kids’ programme called Bing! So much so that her little arms and legs are flapping away with excitement while it’s on. The downside to that is the disgruntled flapping and strange groaning noises that follow when it finishes. We’re then held to ransom ~ endure yet another Bing or see if she’s equally excited by Hollyoaks. Turns out she’s not and to be honest, neither am I. It’s time to get out, enjoy a few walks, introduce her to the joys of the park and being outside and if Sammy’s not watching, maybe making the odd mud pie or two. Until next month... Angela & Sammy

On Monday the 19th of February the Secretary of State for Transport and HS2 Ltd took 8 defendants to the High Court to serve an injunction preventing trespass and obstruction to vehicles. Many believe that the injunction was a cover to remove the camp from its current location. Activities to capture environmental breeches have long been a thorn in HS2’s side. Or is it simply because Protesters are a continuing embarrassment to HS2 as they celebrate much public support from their prime location. Despite the injunction being awarded the Judge Mr Justice Barling praised the camps efforts as committed environmentalists deeming their actions as entirely laudable and saw fit to safeguard the camp from eviction through the order. Despite the positive reassurances from the Judge
High Court Injunction (From the Harefield the service of the injunction raises two major concerns. HS2 remains a hugely unpopular project Protection camp) By Sofia Kazi As you may be aware HS2 began works on their controversial project at Harvil Road North entrance in October last year. The felling of hundreds of trees caught the attention of concerned local people who gained access to the land and captured footage of wildlife crimes taking place. Bats were seen to be flying overhead where tree felling was occurring, trees which may have been home to their bat roosts. This marked the beginning of the Wildlife Protection Camp on Harvil Road that has since been collecting and recording evidence of HS2’s detrimental environmental impact and holding them to account.
which the public has been fighting though democratic means over many years. When that voice has remained unheard because it seems that government and multinationals have conspired together to push this project into force, what choice is left but to take direct action? To remove this last hope to make governments listen and instead to persecute, threaten bankruptcy and attempt to criminalise those who fight for social justice is clearly wrong. Secondly now that the injunction is in place, HS2 have essentially secured themselves the rights to continue working safe in the knowledge that any wildlife breeches can go unchecked. It was raised in court that an independently appointed Wildlife Officer should be put in place to provide the necessary protection, however the Judge did not have the powers to grant that request. The power is now in the hands of the rich corporations who have essentially bought a law securing them secrecy and unaccountability.
Protesters have since argued that HS2 have not provided the correct ecological surveys for the current works. Is it possible that enabling works onto ancient irreplaceable woodland are allowed to take place without correct surveys or mitigation? Are UK environmental laws so weak? HS2 have stated their obligation to protect the flora or fauna if required to do so but are they looking to find it? Quite on the To find a copy of the injunction, a trip down Harvil contrary they have been tearing the evidence down road will reveal the notices attached to fences, gates behind them. and various fields earmarked for development. Or further information can be found at As construction continues, information to keep the https://hs2inhillingdon.commonplace.is/ Public informed is becoming more inaccessible. If you have ever tried to obtain any answers at the The Wildlife Protection HS2 Help Desk good luck. It is this frustration that Camp now plans to tackle has been key in leading people to use peaceful HS2 at the root of the direct action as a last resort. Protesters have been problem, local governtrying to halt the destruction because HS2 have ment. Dear Resident,
2018 03
Hopefully spring is finally here and the bulbs have pushed up making a lovely display with Snowdrops, Crocuses and miniature Daffodils all budding and flowering together. It has however been a slow few weeks for us. The bad weather has made it very difficult for any external works being done and our grass cut of all the 30mph areas, scheduled for this month, has had to be put back until next month as the ground is so soggy it would rip the grass out rather than cut it. In order to accommodate this the team are going to swap the grass cut for tackling one of the Rights of Ways which was planned to be done next month. The good news is - we have a new Clerk & RFO (Responsible Finance Officer) on board to help manage the Denham Parish Council. It always makes me laugh that the role is titled as Clerk when in fact they are in an executive role position with a great deal of responsibility. Her name is Tracey Webb and she joins us from Chiltern District Council so she has an insight as to the workings of local government plus a few valuable contacts! So please welcome her on board. The email address to reach Tracey, or any of the team, remains the same; clerk@denhambucks-pc.gov.uk. Our old email address will continue to be redirected for some months to come but please take this as a reminder to update your email address book. One of the first tasks that Tracey has set her sights on trying to improve is the overwhelming litter problem in the Parish. We get lots of complaints about ‘litter’ strewn all over the Parish. From the burger bars litter coming into the area at the beginning of Old Mill Road to the litter on the A412 route out of Denham going 42
towards Hertfordshire. Unfortunately, traffic calming must be arranged for litter picking on this route as it is a very busy road but Tracey advises us that it will now soon take place. We have also had offers from residents happy to assist with litter picking and Tracey will soon be contacting those who have shown an interest. If you are willing to join a litter picking team or are happy to do it when regularly walking for exercise we would love to hear from you. Update on the Scout Hut in Denham Green. Many people were asked to sign a petition trying to prevent the Scout Hut being refurbished. It was brought to our attention that many signed the petition due to being fed misinformation, so we wrote to the surrounding residents outlying our plans and we are pleased to say that we have received letters and phone calls in support and we will keep you informed as our plans move ahead. We continue to do our utmost on behalf of the community and your help would be appreciated. Please get in touch. It can be very rewarding to help others. Save the Date: The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on the 16 May 2018 The Parish Council meets on the 2nd Monday of every month (except August) at 19:30 in the Parish Office, Rear of Denham Village Memorial Hall, Village Road, Denham, and residents are always welcome to attend. Marilyn Heath - Chairman, Denham Parish Council Our grateful thanks to In and Around Denham for providing this platform for us

The RSPCA Hillingdon, Slough, Windsor, Kingston and District Branch Registered Charity No: 263515
How would your missing house cat get home? 3 year old cat came into our care in January, desA surprising number of the reports our Branch receives about missing cats, relate to house cats who according to their owners, aren’t microchipped because they never go out or only ever stay in the garden. Sadly unforeseen events can and do happen, and an open door or window can provide an exit for a cat that has had a fright, is just acting out of curiosity or if not neutered ventures off in search of love. Indoor cats are generally not streetwise and are particularly vulnerable in the big wide world. Microchipped cats are more likely to be reunited with their owners if found and to receive prompt veterinary care if injured or involved in a road traffic accident. We would recommend that all cats be microchipped, and indoor cats should be no exception. Microchipping typically costs £10-£20, and you can also look out for special microchip promotions which may be cheaper – it’s a small price to pay for added peace of mind and safety for your cat. Also remember that a microchip won’t help reunite you with your pet, unless you notify the microchip database whenever your contact details change. For advice or help with microchipping your cat, speak to your vet or call our RSPCA Hillingdon Clinic on 01895 231435.
perately in need of someone to love and the chance to start over. After having Millie spayed, microchipped and vaccinated, we set about looking for the perfect new home to fulfil her dreams of finding love and happiness again. A couple of weeks later, we were delighted when Millie left us to join her lovely new family. Her ‘Mum’ has recently been in touch to let us know how Millie is getting on. "What a little treasure she is! She's settled in so well, has chosen her favourite chair and has a lovely time playing with her catnip sock and long pheasant's tail feather - which seem to be more fun than the toys bought from the pet shop! Thank you for looking after her and for letting me adopt her."
We’re always so pleased to receive these lovely updates about the animals we have rehomed. There are however, always lots of others waiting for their chance of a fresh start in life. They come into our care for many different reasons – abandonment, owner death, illness, relocation or homelessness, financial pressures or just being plain unwanted! Denham Green E-ACT Primary Academy in the top 1% of schools Nationally for attainment in Mathematics. Last year, Denham Green E-ACT Primary Academy's Key Stage 2 results in mathematics (100% of the pupils passed at the expected level, compared to a National Average of 75%) put the Academy in the top 1% of schools nationally for attainment in this subject. To put this into perspective; there are over 25,000 primary schools and Academies across the UK, and our results put us up in the top 1% of ALL schools in the UK. Everyone in the Academy - and within the E-ACT Academy chain - is incredibly proud of these outstanding results, and the hard work that the children and staff in the Academy put in to achieve this.
Head Teacher Sarah Flannigan had this to say, "Last year's results in mathematics - as well as our other subjects - continued a incredible string of results in recent years, and since the changes to SATS in 2016. The year before last we achieved in the top 3% of schools nationally, so to maintain such incredibly extraordinary results for another year is fantastic. I am incredibly proud of all of the staff and pupils here at Denham Green E-ACT Primary academy as they continue to excel."
