Those years have gone far too quickly and I can’t help feeling just a little sad that those annoying kids programmes along with my small child, are both things of the past. How ever, that sadness is truly overshadowed by the pride I feel today when I look at the beau tiful young woman she’s become and see how excited she is about tonight’s big prom. Yes, like all parents, it’s cost us a small fortune, but then again, I should recoup that in petrol. Today was also the last ever school run!

Pocket Money 

A Parents’ Guide

with Susan Brookes-Morris

T

he Annual 2014 Pocket Money Survey by the Halifax revealed that 8 to 15 year olds received an average amount of £6.35 per week. Whilst parents or guardians were the main givers, a third of those surveyed also received pocket money from grandparents. Thirteen year olds were the most likely age group to receive weekly amounts and boys received more on average than girls. Only a third of children  said they would save up for something expensive,  most preferring to ask for it as a present. Other surveys such as those by Roosterbank suggest children as young as 3 are getting pocket money. Whatever the amount, pocket money given in the right way can help children to learn the necessary skills and gain the confidence to handle money responsibly. If you are having trouble deciding how much pocket money to give your children, think about what you expect them to pay for from that money. You can involve your children in the decision process. Do you expect them to buy their own sweets and magazines with the money for example, and would this mean that they ended up eating fewer sweets than you currently buy for them which may lead to healthier choices? Or would you prefer to buy this type of thing and money will be for ‘special extras’ only?



Commonly a basic payment plus bonus system is recommended. This includes a fixed amount which is given as long as children do certain expected things, perhaps keep their rooms tidy and do their homework for example. It is then ‘topped’ up by extra amounts if children do additional chores or achieve something significant .Of course you will need to make the possibilities appropriate to their age, and different chores can attract different bonuses depending on the time and effort required. Many parents find that the use of a reward chart is helpful, particularly for younger children as it shows clearly the financial benefits of completing extra tasks. Having regular conversations about what children are doing with their money, what they want to buy and why they want it is also important. This can help them understand the value of things much more clearly than when you pay for things for them because they have to decide whether to buy x or y. If you can bear it, it really is best to let them learn from their financial mistakes. Whilst many children will have a splurge when they first start receiving pocket money, as they get used to it they tend to become more careful about their choices. You can also help stimulate their thinking by talking about how you budget.

Before we start, I must make a confession. I am and always have been one of Jaguar’s biggest fans, so this road test is likely to be a little biased. In fact, my fondest dream is to be proud owner of an early E Type, although this becomes ever more unlikely as prices head towards the stratosphere. Instead, I shall have to content myself with their new compact sports saloon, the XE. This car matters to Jaguar; it is going up against the likes of the BMW 3 Series and, as such, is entering the premier league of premium carmakers; this class is where the volume sales are. Jaguar tried to play this game before with the X Type, a rebodied Ford Mondeo with a hastily cobbled together 4 wheel drive system. They lost miserably. This time they are fielding a vastly superior team with a body that is 70% alumin ium, a proper rear wheel drive setup and styling that is rooted in the 2020s rather than the 1970s. But, will it be good enough to take the fight to the 3 Series, Audi’s ubiquitous A4 or the swoopy new Mercedes C Class? First things first, does it look the part? The answer is a re sounding yes; with a sharply raked rear roofline it is long, low and sleek. It looks a little like a scaled down XF but with a tidier back end and the faintly 

menacing headlights of the XJ. The wheels fill the arches nicely too, always the acid test for a purposeful looking car. Inside it’s all a bit modern for a Jag, influenced more by the F Type sports car than the old world luxury of the XF saloon. There isn’t a bit of walnut veneer in sight, although there are lashings of leather. I like the sporty bucket seats front and rear. Headroom in the back is a bit restricted because of the sloping roofline, but it isn’t a major problem and at least there’s a decent size boot. The choice of engines at launch is an allFord line up. There’s a turbocharged 2.0 litre petrol with either 197 or 236bhp and a supercharged 3.0 litre V6 with 325bhp, which I’m told is turbine smooth and seriously brawny. The big seller is inevitably going to be the diesel, initially a 2.0 litre unit with either 161 or 177bhp. The more powerful version only adds £500 to the price tag and doesn’t charge a penalty in either fuel consumption or CO2 emissions; that was the one I tried. It’s a nice smooth engine but you have to rev it to access the power – there’s enough to get up to 60 in under 8 sec onds and top 130mph. The manual 6 speed is a bit notchy but the ratios are well chosen. Better still, you can easily bet

ter 60mpg and the tiny CO2 emissions bring your car tax down to £20 per year. Jaguars have always been about driving and the XE is certainly no exception. The steering is light, precise and provides just enough feedback to let you know what the car is doing as it flits from corner to corner with beautiful poise and balance. On a twisty B road it will bring a huge smile to your face. The ride isn’t perfect but it’s good enough for this class of car; on the vast majority of roads you wouldn’t even no tice. Jaguar were originally predict ing an entry level price of just under £27,000 but in the event it’s knocking on the door of £30k, still competitive against the German opposition. But have they done it, have they built a BMW beater? Well, maybe not a BMW beater but in almost every respect the XE is on a par with the 3 Series. For my money, the Jaguar is a better proposition on two counts – it’s a Jag and every other sales rep in the country hasn’t got one.   

JUST over a year ago the Ruislip Central Horticultural Society hosted a fantastic evening with the very well-known Horticulturist Bob Flowerdew. We asked Bob for his ideas on how we could introduce children to horticulture and engage them in the great hobby that many of us adults couldn’t do without. Bob came up with some great ideas of which the RCHS took forward. I would like to introduce RCHS Show Manager Patricia Swindells who took this idea forward to a very successful outcome, and explains how so many children became involved. How many children when asked “What is their favourite pastime” would answer gardening? Not many would be the answer. However this might be about to change as schools are seeing the advantages that come from engaging their pupils in gardening clubs and societies like the Royal Horticultural Society initiating the campaign for School Gardening. Ruislip Central Horticultural Society has also started to engage with the younger generation with their “Spring has Sprung” competition in the Spring Show. All those who attended the show remarked on the high quality of the exhibits on show from The Sacred Heart Primary School, Ruislip Gardens Primary School and Lady Banks Primary School. Many Secondary and Primary schools in Hillingdon have very active gardening clubs as I can testify as a governor at Glebe Primary School. So why this interest in engagement with the younger generation? Well they are our future and with so many competing activities gardening could lose out on a whole generation unless some positive action is taken. However beside this ‘selfish’º motive there is a lot of evidence that shows that gardening has many benefits for the youngsters themselves. Educationalists know that getting pupils engaged results in them getting outside, away from computers and video games and undertaking valuable exercise. The young gardeners also develop social skills such as verbal communication, interaction with others and learning to work as a team. They have to develop listening skills for taking and understanding instructions. They must be disciplined in order to get things done and perhaps most importantly they develop resilience i.e. the ability to accept and learn from failure as well as success!

On Tuesday 15th September HEATHER ANGEL (British nature photographer, author and TV presenter) will be coming to give a talk Please call 01923 451616 for details. 

Many parents worry that hobbies and activities can encroach on their child’s learning but in fact children who join a gardening club or involve themselves in gardening are actually re-enforcing, enhancing, stimulating and supporting their learning. This can be easily illustrated for example in Mathematics children are constantly measuring and weighing. They are recognising symmetry and patterns. They also have to work to a budget. Pupils are constantly using their literacy skills because they have to read instructions; they may produce posters with regards to shows and sales. They make records for others to follow. They also have an early introduction to Latin! Their Geographical knowledge is improved by their learning about ecology, soils and weather. Even History is supported when the pupils learn about the discovery of plants and the natural and man forced movement of plants. They are encouraged to use their computer skills to design gardens and record their activities. The pupils are asked to produce drawings and sketches. The pupils become familiar with the scientific principles behind concepts of Acid/Alkaline, Water cycle, Photosynthesis and Phototropism. So what should be evident is that gardening is good for the younger generation and if it is good for them then it goes without saying that it is good for the rest of us! All the advantages that have been listed above apply to all of us – it keeps us fit, active in mind and body and it provides a very strong link between the generations. Next month we will be bringing you results and pictures from the RCHS Summer Show. We will also be featuring our mailbag - you can email the RCHS with any gardening queries you would like to put to the panel on rchstalks@gmail.com.

If you would like full details on upcoming events visit www.ruisliphorticultural.org.uk. Until next month.

ho remembers their dad hosing the garden on warm summer evenings? We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used standpipes for weeks. But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon. But gardens need water to survive so what can we do? Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant. A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres depending on size.

them guiltfree. However, if you want to make the most of your saved water then irrigation systems are the best choice. They typically reduce the amount of water you use by 70-90%, which is a huge saving. Here are a few tips for getting the best from an irrigation system.

Ground preparation is really important. Dig in lots of home-produced compost, well rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost. This organic matter Plants for Dry Spaces will help the soil retain any moisture it receives. • Alliums - huge ones look great • Cistus - Rock Rose • Euphorbia - my favourite, very architectural • Helianthemum - Sun Rose • Lavender - plant near patios for the fragrance

Make sure the irrigation lines run under the tips of the branches rather than at the base of the plant. This will water the roots more efficiently.

• Santolina

Make sure you mulch. Mulch can be a membrane, gravel, bark chips or cocoa shells. • Senecio - the sunshine plant The aim is to keep moisture in the soil. I favour organic • Thyme mulches because they gradually rot down and can be You can now buy huge rainwater tanks which dug in to improve the soil texture further. hold up 1000 litres and are great if you have the A few simple measures will ensure that your garden space. Call a spade a serving dish

T

here are many pressing concerns facing the nation – will we still be in the EU in two years’ time; what are we going to do about Islamic State? But I am worried about a much more immediate threat to our society. That’s right, I’m talking about serving plates. As I may have mentioned before, I eat out quite a lot, not least because of the necessity to review a different restaurant every month, and I have noticed an alarming trend developing for serving up food on anything other than a good old fashioned plate. It all started with cheese arriving on chopping blocks. There is a certain logic to this; if you’re cutting off bits of cheese the knife goes into the wood rather than scraping against the plate. But hold on, you don’t worry about the knife scraping against the plate when you’re cutting a bit off a nice juicy piece of steak. Besides, a chopping block won’t fit into the dish washer and it is difficult to clean properly so, before you know it, bacteria has built up on the surface and everyone is going down with horrible bugs. But a far more disturbing trend is the habit of serving up all manner of dishes on pieces of slate. This craze has swept the country and it is now hard to find an eatery that doesn’t insist on plonking a slab of metamorphic rock with some succulent morsels of food perched precariously on top of it down on the table. There are any number of reasons why a piece of slate should not be used as a serving dish. It is flat, so there is nothing to stop food that is globular in nature from rolling over the edge. No doubt, in the kitchens of these restaurants, the waiters must have to navigate a treacherous morass of peas, capers and mozzarella balls. The surface of slate is granular and crisscrossed with cracks and imperfections, giving the dreaded bacteria millions of 

places to hide from the pot cleaner’s brush. Finally, it is hard to think of an item less elegant than a slate, you might as well serve up a starter on a house brick. I’ve seen tiramisu lovingly prepared in coffee cups, but why; what’s wrong with handing over a nice big dollop of it in a bowl? The latest thing is to serve chips in a miniature version of the wire basket from a deep fat fryer. This is ridiculous; not only is it an extra item to buy, it’s an extra thing to wash and the diner has to carefully manoeuvre the chips out of the basket and onto the plate before spearing them with the fork. Invariably you end up eating the chips with your fingers, which is not the kind of table manners I expect to see in a decent restaurant. The whole sorry mess has finally reached its denouement in an otherwise highly rated restaurant on the Isle of Man, where they serve up their full English breakfast on a fireman’s shovel. This is meant to pay homage to the crews of steam engines who used to fry up bacon and eggs on the stoker’s shovel. This is all well and good, but how many hapless diners must have accidentally caught the handle and tipped a piping hot portion of baked beans and fried mushrooms onto their lap? Clearly, something must be done… and I’m glad to say that it has; a Twitter group has been formed demanding that slates be returned to our roofs, chopping boards to the kitchen counter and shovels to the garden shed. This should obviously solve the problem but, in the unlikely event that it doesn’t, I’m going to add my own voice to the chorus. Chefs of the nation, let the ingredients be your palate, china be your canvas and the food your painting. Bring back the humble plate, honed over the millennia to be the perfect serving dish.

GET FIT for  in Ruislip FREE  IT’S officially Summer, but at this time there’s often still a fresh chill in the air, especially in the mornings. But don’t let that stop you, the chill gives you all the more reason to get outside and blow away the cobwebs with some exercise. Why hide away in a gym when Ruislip has an amazing array of parks and outdoor space? The Lido needs no mention but Warrender Park, Bessingby Park and the new running track at Kings College playing fields amongst many others are ideal for working out and they cost nothing!

0 747 5 747 407 www.facebook.com/ guy.wilson.5220 Guy@GuyTWilson.com

On a recent Wednesday morning I witnessed over seven different people running, walking and rollerblading in a 1-hour time period at Kings College playing fields. The Lido also has a marked 2.5k circuit for you to walk, cycle or run and there is also the woods and the beach to explore. Most parks now have ‘outdoor fitness’ equipment but you don’t actually need any equipment for a hard hitting workout; all you need is your body! Remember it’s all relative, if you haven’t exercised in years then walking is a great start.

While fitness fads come and go (electronic abs belts, really!), all you need for a truly challenging work out is yourself and a little imagination. A simple combination of squats, press-ups and sprints completed in short but intense bursts will provide the whole body with an effective workout. As your fitness improves, or if you are training for a particular challenge you can gradually increase the intensity, the amount of time or add in some more complex exercises such as handstands, pull ups or chin ups, burpees and lunges. The key is to ‘mix it up’, if you constantly change your routine and challenge your body then it has to adapt accordingly. If you currently do no exercise a 20-30 minute walk is a fantastic start, if you jog for 30 mins three times a week how about mixing things up a little? Go jogging once and do something different for the other two sessions, sprinting intervals or squatting and jumping or maybe even simply stepping on and off a park bench for two minute intervals. Make your exercise interesting, mix it up and not only will you love it, you will reap the benefits. Remember, it’s not about how long you are training for, it is about your intensity. I like the motto of ‘go hard and go home’. Determined by where you are starting intense could be going for a walk, or it could be a 60 minute high intensity workout. Wherever you are starting from challenge yourself and see the changes. There will be a few muscular aches along the way but it is worth it. And finally, there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing and you only get wet once so get out there and enjoy it. Make sure you warm up pre-exercise and cool down post exercise and if you haven’t exercised in years it could be worth consulting your doctor before undertaking a new exercise programme.

Asbestos exposure among police

 

by Alan Jolliffe Senior litigation executive, personal injury team IBB Solicitors alan.jolliffe@ibblaw.co.uk

Thousands of police may have come into contact with asbestos at training facilities, according to the Metropolitan Police. The force is examining a number of buildings used between 1980 and 2007.

mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. The Health and Safety Executive estimates that around 5,000 deaths each year are caused by exposure to the substance.

The Metropolitan Police have indicated that up to 30,000 police officers may have come into contact with asbestos at training centres. Scotland Yard has stated that it has “recently become aware” that some buildings used in firearms training between 1980 and 2007 could have contained the carcinogenic material, and investigations have now commenced.

If you have been exposed to asbestos, even if it was up to 50 years ago, and you are suffering symptoms such as shortness of breath, a persistent cough, a loss of appetite and weight loss, with tightness of your chest, you should immediately seek the advice of your General Practitioner, who will arrange for a chest x-ray to consider whether you are suffering some form of asbestos-related disease.

This is the latest in a succession of occupations at risk from the effects of asbestos exposure. Clearly the dangers are not confined to exposure in an industrial environment. People from all walks of life are at a real risk of exposure. Between 1945 and 1975, when the use of asbestos was at its peak, over 14,000 schools were built and many Victorian schools were refurbished. As a result, potentially huge numbers of staff and pupils may have been exposed to harmful amounts of asbestos dust and fibres. There is no such thing as low level exposure: exposure is exposure at any level - in particular where the asbestos was damaged or in poor condition. Being exposed to asbestos – a naturally occurring fibrous material, which was regularly used in buildings between the 1950s and 1990s – carries a risk of serious and potentially fatal diseases, including

Alternatively, you may be a family member of someone who was diagnosed with an asbestos-related cancer such as lung cancer or mesothelioma and who has since passed away as a result of that condition. The estate of the deceased may still be entitled to some compensation in respect of their illness. At IBB, we are seeing a growing number of enquiries from people who are now suffering from the effects of asbestos exposure. If you think that exposure from a school, workplace, or nearby industrial site is responsible for your or a family member’s illness, please contact our asbestos compensation claims solicitors on 01895 207835. Alternatively, email us at PI@ibblaw.co.uk. to talk about how we might be able to help.

Life-changing advice When life as you know it changes through industrial disease we can help you seek redress and deal with the new challenges you face. Call us to talk to our experienced solicitors about coping with change and planning for your future – and that of those you love.

I have always felt that the idea that if there aren’t enough houses to go round, prices will rise to be a myth. There’s a simple reason for this: if it were true then the opposite would also be true; if the supply increased, prices would fall. That would mean that nobody would ever build a new house because, by the time it was finished, the price would have fallen.

Strangely, the groups of people who oppose any significant development in their neighbourhoods (the media has christened them NIMBYs) do not buy this argument. While they will normally cite factors such as “spoiling the character of the town” as justification for their opposition, the true reason is often that they believe that the value of their own property will fall. There are actually some sets of circumstances where this can be true. Where you have a popular area which traditionally has high prices and a lot of new homes are being built, resi dents who live in homes perceived to be less desir able may well see the value of their properties fall. Given the choice, buyers will opt for a new build rather than an ex council house, for example.

The statistics bear out my theory. Look at private house building since the 1960s and, whenever prices have risen sharply, the supply of new homes has also risen sharply. The two correlate remarka bly well. This is understandable because new homes are not just bought by first time buyers, they are bought by people who are already on the prop erty ladder and, increasingly these days, by buy to Oddly enough, the latest survey by RICS reveals let investors. The buyers who are on the property that in many areas prices are being driven up by a ladder normally have to sell their existing homes lack of new builds. So what do I know! and they are unlikely to do that if prices are falling. In other words, if developers build a lot of private  houses, rising prices become a selffulfilling proph esy. 
