Dear Readers Welcome to the October issue of In and Around Iver And the last few weeks, before the truly extended nights return. Don’t forget the clocks go back an hour on Sunday 28th at 2am! Now let’s see if having reminded everyone in print, whether I actually remember to do it myself. Obviously there’s a bit of a Halloween theme to this month’s issue, and a wee hint of Christmas is also starting to appear as our local venues start to gear themselves up ready for the festive period. October for us will see us celebrating little SummerHope’s first birthday, which in itself makes me wonder about just how quickly a year passes by. Was it really a full twelve months ago that we were on a constant hospital vigil? A year ago that all of us had absolutely no idea how different our lives would be with the introduction of this new little family member? And yet, oddly, I can’t remember what it was like to wake up without seeing that little face each morning or working without her crawling into my office for a quick Nanny hug. I wonder just how different things will be again this time next year? Until next month... Angela & Sammy

THE RICHINGS PLAYERS ARE HOPING FOR A FIRST future. Fighting ignorance can be difficult, but our four Girton students – Tess, Maeve, Celia and Carolyn – fight back with their minds: indeed, they show the men how it’s done!” The play chronicles this real event that coincided with the growing campaign for suffrage. It was just one step on the road to equality of opportunity for women and was met with fierce and ugly opposition, culminating in a riot on the streets of Cambridge! The so called ‘blue stockings’ had a long way to go but their strong spirit and persistence was an important element in the story of suffrage, equality and emancipation for women. Blue Stockings will make you laugh and cry; it strikes the perfect balance between comedy and poignancy. However, more than this, it gives us the impetus to fight injustice today, for it is still rife. The play has a great plot, a fascinating narrative, a strong range of characters and it moves at a cracking pace. Sophie adds; “It may cause you to think, but it will certainly be entertaining.” Performing in Iver Village Hall from Wednesday 10th to Saturday 13th October at 7.45pm. Tickets are priced at £10 and £8 (Concessions – students “Love or knowledge what would you choose?” and OAPs) and can be purchased from calling the Well, that’s the question the Richings Players next Box Office on 01753 654550 or online at play poses. Iver’s award-winning amateur theatre www.richingsplayers.co.uk. company are delighted to be performing “Blue Stockings" a play by Jessica Swale and directed For the latest info and news, keep an eye on our by Sophie Torrent. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds, as well as our website Sophie last directed the modern take on the classic pantomime “Cinderella” in January 2017 and now brings “Blue Stockings” to Iver Village Hall in October. It is the first full-length play by Jessica Swale and is set at Girton College, Cambridge in 1896. Its title refers to “blue stockings”, a derogatory term for female intellectuals. The action involves four very talented female undergraduates and the campaign to be allowed, like their male colleagues, to receive a formal degree qualification at the end of their studies. Sophie says; “Against the topical backdrop of the continuing international quest for gender equality and this year marking 100 years since women got the vote, I feel that the play’s timing in the Richings Players’ repertoire is perfect. People don't want to be preached at right now, so if we're ever to get anywhere, it’s better that it should be a comedy with a light touch and a bite underneath the surface. I like to think that it's a story with mainly youthful and young people looking to the 8

The sounds should also be associated with something that they enjoy, such as their favourite treats or a game. Theadora

Looking for loving homes Theadora

Theadora is a beautiful 1 year old black and white female short-haired cat who is looking for a new home because her previous owners could no longer care for her. She is a sweet and fairly quiet girl, who can be a little shy with strangers but quickly gains in confidence once she gets to know you. Theodora loves her food, playing with toys and being fussed. She would prefer a home without other cats where she can enjoy the undivided attention of her human family. This lovely youngster so deserves a fresh start and the perfect home that really will be forever this time. Could you offer Theodora all this and the lifetime of love she is looking for?

Kittens

Kitten season is well advanced now and despite having found lovely homes for more than 50 kittens already this year, we still have a fair number in our care. Kittens come to us having been found as strays or abandonments with and without their mothers. Owners of unneutered females also turn to us to take unplanned litters which they have neither the time or money to care for or cannot home. One beautiful black cat was already heavily pregnant when she was signed over to us because her owner had developed allergies. The cat later gave birth to 2 black and 2 tabby babies at our cattery. Each of these kittens will spend at least 9 weeks in our care before they can join a new family, and the mum cat a minimum of 3 months until she has reared her young and can be neutered. This is just one of many litters that puts such a strain on our resources every year. There are ways you can help and anything you can do is appreciated: - Neuter your cats to avoid contributing to the number of unwanted kittens and also for the wellbeing of your cats (for neutering advice / help please call us on 01895 231435) 18

Jeremy - Donate sachets of kitten food, unwanted bedding or toys - Consider offering a home to one (or even two!) of our deserving kittens

Jeremy’s Appeal

Jeremy, a beautiful little terrier cross was 8 weeks old when he came into our care as a puppy farm rescue. We quickly found that this sweet boy suffered from a birth defect called Phimosis. Essentially he had a severely narrowed foreskin where the opening of the sheath was tiny which amongst other things was preventing normal urination. Our vets at Arden House Animal Hospital undertook the surgery required to enlarge the opening and rectify the problem. Thankfully Jeremy will now be able to enjoy a perfectly normal life. The cost of the procedure, associated treatment and post-operative care is just under £500. If you could spare even a small donation for Jeremy so funds will continue to be available for other animals in need of essential but costly veterinary procedures like this, we would be extremely grateful. Donations can be made via our website www.rspcahillingdonclinic.org.uk using the “Donate” option (please mark for Jeremy) or call 01895 833417 for other ways to give. Thank you on behalf of our gorgeous little dumpling Jeremy! If you can offer a loving home to any of our animals, please call us on 01895 833417 or visit www.rspcahillingdonclinic.org.uk to apply online. Thank you as always for your support.

WW1 CENTENARY COMMEMORATION ~ 11TH NOVEMBER 2018 Dear Residents,

the British Legion to include a BBQ, hot chocolate and the Clubhouse Bar will also be open to resiThis November marks the centenary of the end of dents and attendees. the Great War that led to the death of 888,246 British and Commonwealth service personnel and rerouted the course of history. Over the past four years our country has been commemorating the Great War (1914-1918) it all began at The Tower of London with ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ a major art installation of 888,246 ceramic poppies pouring from the Tower of London into the moat below creating a sea of blood red, one poppy to represent each life lost. To further commemorate those who died in the First World War, installations of silhouettes are appearing across the country, The Ivers Parish Council is honoured to support this Royal British Legion ‘Thank You’ remembrance campaign. The Silent Soldier will stand as a tribute to those who didn't return home and to those whose lives would never be the same again, following the end of the war in November 1918, the process of demobilisation and discharge was still a long process as the British Army still had commitments to fulfil in Germany, North Russia and in the garrisons of the Empire. On arrival back in England the men would move to a Dispersal Centre, this was a hutted or tented camp or barracks where they received a railway warrant or ticket to their home station. From there they were on their own, and would be seen across the country, walking back home, down the roads and across the fields, returning to their families. The Royal British Legion & The Ivers Parish Council invite residents, all military personnel and their families to a special event on November 11th 2018 from 6.30 p.m. The Royal British Legion will host the local commemorative service at their premises on Church Road, Iver Heath, the Beacon with thanks to funding secured from South Bucks District Council will be lit by local veterans, and parking is available by kind permission of Pinewood Studios in the Five Points Field adjacent to the British Legion Clubhouse. Following on from the Government vote on expansion, a National Policy Statement (NPS), those properties which would have to be demolished are now legally blighted which means that compensation has to be paid to their owners.

As well as accepting cash or cheques as before, our website also allows for on-line subscription payments. So, if you’ve not yet paid your subscription for this year and mislaid your donation envelope then take advantage of this facility.

Heathrow have expanded the offer to cover an additional 5000 properties which do not need to be demolished but which would suffer the negative consequences of being close to the expanded airport.

The map below showing the area covered noticeably omits anything north of the M4. The Association has raised this with Heathrow and are actively pursuing this with them.

Choosing your Bespoke Glass Splashbacks

Bespoke glass splashbacks are fast becoming the wallpaper of the kitchen. They are one of the first elements of the kitchen you notice as soon as you step inside. So how do you choose what colour, pattern, or picture to have in your new kitchen?

You can add a natural feel into your new space, by incorporating a splashback such as the one pictured. Adding this can create a much calmer space, and something to really stand out in your kitchen.
