Message from the Ambassador The Glimpses of India painting competition, organized by the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture for the last 22 years, has been our agship event to connect with Egyptian school children. This year, the 70th year of India’s independence, the competition reached out to children across 7 cities, besides Cairo and attracted an unprecedented participation of over 10,000 students from 1092 schools, who showcased their amazing talent. The cultural bonds between India and Egypt are based on historical links and have grown in scope and in depth. The Glimpses of India painting competition is a bridge that connects us to the youth of Egypt and their affection and love for India. We believe the youth, who are the future of the country, will build stronger bonds. We are committed to nurture exchanges between the youth of our two countries to further deepen our relations. I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Governorates, supporters and sponsors and the eminent jury for their continued support to this event. I extend my heartiest congratulations to all the prize-winners and all the children who participated in the 22nd Glimpses of India painting competition. Message from Acting Director The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), has been conducting the annual ‘Glimpses of India’ painting competition in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt for the last 22 years. The competition is organized to commemorate the birth anniversaries of India’s three great leaders – Mahatma Gandhi, father of the Nation; Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister; and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first Education Minister. This year’s participation was unprecedented in terms of number of children and number of schools. The competition was held simultaneously at 12 different venues – India House (residence of Ambassador of India), Embassy of India, Al Azhar Park, Misr Public Library, Children’s Civilization and Creativity Centre, Agricultural Museum and Al Sayed Zeinab in Cairo and Giza and also at six other cities, i.e., Alexandria, Ismailia, Port Said, Fayyoum, Mansoura and Luxor. The creativity and imaginations of children in different categories, especially, those who are differently abled, were amazing. I would like to convey my appreciation to their teachers, schools and parents who have supported their children. I extend my heartiest congratulations to all the winners for their imagination and piece of art. All the winning paintings will be at display on 17 November 2016 at Gomhouria Theatre. The winners will be honoured with medals, certificate and gifts. I would like to convey my thanks to the jury who had examined each and every entry patiently and decided the winners. But for me everyone who has participated in the Glimpses of India painting competition is a winner. I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture and Cairo Opera House for their continuous support. I would also like to express my thanks to the sponsors Scib Paints, Monginis, Lava Mobile, Dabur and Kandhar Restaurant for their generous support. The successful completion of painting competition would not have happened without the active support from Aga Khan Foundation, Al Azhar Park, Misr Public Library, Agricultural Museum, Children’s Civilization and Creativity Centre, Al Sayed Zeinab National Centre for Children, Victoria College in Alexandria, Dar Ibn Lokman School in Mansoura and Cultural Palaces in Ismailia, Port Said, Fayyoum and Luxor. I am also thankful to each one of them for providing their venues. Rakesh Kawra Acting Director

Art Education Advisor’s message Art and creativity Art is a form of creation, and artistic talents are gifts bestowed by God on every human being with different degrees. It is difficult to call a person an artist, unless he enjoys high-level of creative capabilities. Art is a form of human culture and is a product of human creation. Moreover, art is a means of expression, through which humans can express themselves, their reactions and heart feelings. A work of art is a message sent out by artists to people throughout the ages. Through works of art, artists keep on sending out these messages. In fact, art is a reproduction of reality mixed with a touch of imagination. An artistic event displaying through paintings prominent features of the Indian heritage and society is being annually organized, during which Egyptian school students draw paintings expressing their love for the Indian culture. The annual painting competition “Glimpses of India”, which has been organized over the past 22 years through fruitful cooperation between Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) and the Ministry of Education under the auspices of the Embassy of India in Cairo, gives the opportunity to Egyptian school students to visualize their impressions of India through painting. The appeal of the students to the competition has been increasing every year, until the participants reached this year 10050 students from nine governorates (Cairo, Giza, Qalyoubia, Daqahlia, Port Said, Ismailia, Alexandria, Fayyoum and Luxor). Through their paintings, the Egyptian school students from preparatory, primary and secondary stages and children with special needs (blind & deaf), given their exposure to the Indian culture and civilization with help of their art education teachers, created works of art, which depict the beauty and charming landscape of India as well as famous Indian personalities. I wish Egyptian students all the best in the annual painting competition “Glimpses of India”. Dr. Rabab Abdel Mohsen Imam Art Education Advisor

LANGUAGE TEACHING: The Centre conducts part time courses in two major India languages - Hindi and Urdu. It conducts Certificate of Proficiency courses in Hindi and Urdu for six months duration and Diploma of Proficiency course in Hindi and Urdu. The course fees are nominal. The Centre also provides all learning materials to the students free of cost. Those who successfully finish these courses are provided all necessary support if they wish to pursue further studies in India. YOGA: The Centre regularly conducts courses in Yoga – the ancient science that seeks to maintain harmony of body, mind and soul of the practitioners. Yoga classes have gained popularity over the last one and a half year with the increase in the number of students . The Centre also conducts outreach Yoga sessions on regular basis. PERFORMANCES/DEMONSTRATIONS: From time to time, the Centre conducts classes of Indian classical dances. At the end of the learning sessions, performances/demonstrations of Indian dances by experts and her disciples are organized. The Centre is expecting a classical dancer from ICCR in the near future. This will further increase the in-house and outreach activities of the Centre. LECTURES AND SEMINARS: The Centre organizes lectures/seminars under the month ‘MACIC Roundtable’ at its premises on various topics of mutual interest. Each lecture has a question-answer session at the end in which the speakers interact with the audience. Seminars are organized on special occasions. The Centre also joins hand with Egypt India Friendship Association (EIFA) to rope in Egyptians for various activities, including lectures, exhibition, etc. LIBRARY: The Centre has a library with a stock of around 8000 books. The books cover a wide range of topics on both general and India-related subjects in Hindi, Urdu, English and Arabic. The titles available in the library include all kinds of
literature, history, culture, art, cooking, yoga, religion, philosophy, biographies of Indian national leaders etc. The library provides access to Internet for its members. The library is open from 10 am to 5 pm on all working days. Two books are issued to members for a maximum period of two weeks. EXHIBITIONS: The Centre regularly organizes exhibition of paintings, photographs etc. by leading and emerging Indian and Egyptians artists at its premises. PAINTING COMPETITION : The Centre organizes a painting competition for Egyptian school children every year in order to promote artistic talent among them and encourage understanding of Indian culture. The competition titled "Glimpses of India" is conducted for children studying in private and public schools of Cairo/Giza and other Governorates as well as the schools of the National Institutes. The competition is held at three levels: the Primary, the Preparatory and the Secondary levels. The 22nd edition of “Glimpses of India" was held in October 2016 and more than 10,100 Egyptian students from 1092 schools participated. CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMME (CEP): The Centre facilitates implementation of the Executive Programme for Cultural Exchange signed between India and Egypt in March 2012. Visits of experts and groups from India to Egypt and vice versa are covered under the CEP. DANCE AND MUSIC TROUPES: The Centre brings to Egypt music and dance troupes from different regions of India as per the terms of the CEP and arranges their performances in Cairo and other cities with the cooperation from the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. Highly talented classical musicians and folk dancers sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) present their art and culture to entertain the Egyptian audience and help us engaging the youth on continuous basis. SCHOLARSHIPS: Under the CEP and Africa Scholarship Scheme, India offers 27 scholarships to Egyptian students for Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral studies. The Centre coordinates with the Ministry of Higher Education in Egypt and also receives applications directly from the candidates for these scholarships. Through an English proďŹ ciency test, the Centre selects eligible students and sends them to India for pursuing their studies.
MACIC Film Club: Indian and Egyptian feature films and documentaries are screened for film lovers and critics. ‘INDIA DAY’ ACTIVITIES: The Centre organizes cultural activities in different cities, mostly at the universities, educational
institutions and cultural palaces etc. The ‘India Day’ celebrations include India-Egypt photo exhibitions, Incredible India, displaying Indian handicrafts, musical instruments, tourist literature and a separate section comprising the old photographs of the bilateral meetings of the Indian and Egyptian leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Gamal Abdel Naser, Indira Gandhi etc. INDIA BY THE NILE: India by the Nile 2016 was held from 21 April to 7 May in five cities of Egypt. The Festival is produced by Delhi-based M/s Teamwork Arts and supported by ICCR, Egyptian Ministries of Culture and Tourism and the Cairo Opera House. IBN 2015 was inaugurated by Shri Amitabh Bachcan at India House. The previous four editions of the Festival were grand success. Over 20,000 Egyptians from different walks of life participated directly in the various events of the festival in 2016. The Festival had helped the Mission in building the Brand India image.
