Hello! In your hands you are holding a booklet with information and contacts for staying in Leipzig. Whether you’ve just arrived in the city or have already been here a while, this booklet can help you find your way around by giving you an overview of some places and initiatives. It contains information on where you can ask for help if needed (medical help, social and legal advice, safe spaces and other support), as well as a list of places where you can find clothes, household goods and other common things for free or at a low cost. This booklet also gives you tips on how and where you can spend your free time in Leipzig (e.g. free kitchens and cafÊs, libraries, sport and playing fields, cultural and spiritual spaces and more). The enclosed city map can help you find these places easily. All addresses have a number, which you can find on the map. For this booklet we listed offers which are as cheap as possible or free, accessible to anyone, self-organized and interculturally oriented. This selection is therefore limited and doesn’t cover all that the city has to offer. At any new edition information will be added and updated. Any corrections, ideas or suggestions will therefore be welcome (see the imprint for our contacts, p. 48)

Social Counselling and Legal Advice
As long as you live in refugee housing centres the social workers there are responsible for legal advice. Refugees who already have their own place can refer to one of the five official city social counselling services for refugees. The following places support you with the protection of your own rights and with social and bureaucratic issues (such as asylum procedure, housing, work, education, language, health) and in dealing with authorities. Language
According to the German residency law those who want to apply for a residency permit (stay long-term in Germany) must, among other things, prove with certificate that their language skills are at least at an A2 level. If you have a residency title (Aufenthaltsitel: status of your residency in Germany after registration) you have the right to an integration course, including a certified language course. Additionally the city of Leipzig provides all refugees who have left the initial registration centre (Erstaufnahmeeinrichtungen) with a language course, as well as an alphabetization course for refugees who are not familiar with the latin alphabet. It often remains possible to take part to language courses at your former refugee housing centre for free even when you no longer live there. If interested, you can get further information directly there. Here are courses (from self-organised to institutional) where you can learn German for free. Courses with Official Certification All language schools in and around Leizpig recognised by the Ministry for Migration and Refugees which offer integration courses are listed on the following website (only in German language): www.bamf.de/webgis-integrationskurse For more information you can refer to social counselling services (see Social Counselling and Legal Advice p. 9) 18

Eating and Drinking
In a "open kitchen" you can get warm food for a small donation. The food is mostly vegan or vegetarian. This means it will not contain meat or animal products such as milk, cheese, egg etc. A self-organized group of people organizes the ingredients and prepares the meal. Anyone who wants to help is welcome. At some places, after you have eaten, you have to clean your own plate. Many of the food spaces also offer opportunities for meeting other people, listening to music, dancing, drinking, playing, reading and others. Drinks, alcoholic and non alcoholic, cakes and snacks are offered. It is common to leave a small donation for the space. 03
