NEWLETTER #2 2019 2 ND STOP OF THE DUTCH CHAMPIONSHIP FOIL - MEDEMBLIK On Sunday 3rd of June, the second stop of the Dutch foil tour was held on the Ijsselmeer at Medemblik. The 10 to 18 kn of wind came from the south and brought some nice warm temperature with. The foil fleet in the Netherlands is a mix of older formula men and young former RSX sailors. We did 5 races on a outerloop course, what was quite interesting with more than 16kn of wind. I finished the day in second place. Up and downwind was going very well but I lost it on the half wind course with my big sail and foil setup.

3 TH STOP OF THE DUTCH CHAMPIONSHIP FOIL AALSMEER The third stop of the Dutch foil tour was on the 16th of June in Aalsmeer. We got lucky with a light southwest wind, which is the best direction for this spot in the middle of Holland. We did three races in shifty wind, what made the sailing very technical.

I finished in 4th place with a 3, 3 and 7. Next foil stop is after summer break.

WAVES FESTIVAL FOIL - TEXEL A music festival combined with sports and foil windsurfing, that is ‘WAVES’ on Texel. The foilracing was organised with the goal to promote foil windsurfing for the Olympic class. It was a bit a bit a try-out with different racecourses every day like updown, long distance, slalom and the famous round Texel. There were 18 competitors with varied expertise, background and weight difference. My goal his event was to gain more experience in foil racing. I can conclude that I need to find a way to improve my light wind sailing.

IFCA WOLDS SLALOM - SYLT The IFCA world championships where hold on Brandenburgerstrand in Westerland, Germany from 4 to 10 June.

During the 6 days of competition we got all kinds of wind and weather. From wavy 5.6 racing to lightwind 8.6 pumping. The whole week I was in the battle for a podium spot, at the start of the last day I was sitting in 3rd position. But due to material problems I could not make it in the A final on the last day and ended in 6th place overall.

MIDSUMMERWAVENIGHT – DE HAAN This is a fun Belgian wave-slalom event with a waiting period of two weeks which makes it possible to have perfect conditions. They gave a GO for Wednesday, the competition starts at 6:30 PM, so I started work early and after 8 hours of work I drove to the Belgium coast.

I was just in time for the first start of the downwind slalom race. They do a beach rabbit start after a jeep and then you run in the water, jumps on your board and off to the first mark. They always put the second mark in the shorebreak which make it a lot of fun. After the third mark you sail straight to the beach, you run to the beach club and need to drink a pint of a beer, when empty you are finished. And this they do 3 times.

After the three slalom races it was around 9.30PM and the wave elimination started. The first time that I participated in a wave contest. I had some waverides, but missed a jump. Because I can't do jump moves. Was great to get out with the wave gear until the sunset at 22 o'clock. Dieter van der Eijken won the wave elimination.

I got the first place in the downwind slalom.

4 ND STOP OF THE PROFESSIONAL WINDSURF ASSOCIATION SALOM - FUERTEVENTURA The best slalom event of the year was great again. Racing everyday on the medium and small material is always pleasant. The first 3 days it was super choppy and wavy, which I normally really like… But one hour before the first heat of the event, I got out for some test runs. In the last run I had a spinout followed by a catapult, here I broke the rail of my board with my knee. My knee was bleeding heavily and at the first aid on the beach they put 4 stitches in my knee. I was able to race but of course this was not ideal, I was quite stiff in my knee and mentally it was also not going so well. I tried to stay out of the water as long as possible to not get the wound to wet, but that didn’t worked for me as I couldn’t warm up. So racing wasn’t going so good the first days. Luckily the wound did not get worse by sailing. So I got out earlier to warm up better and racing was then also going better. The last two days I was back in the game and made the finals.

Overall the event was a success with 9 eliminations done, I was happy that I made every race despite my injured knee. Even with the unlucky start it feels good to finish the event with some decent racing in the end.

In combined the event on Fuerteventura with a holiday on Gran Canaria together with my girlfriend in our campervan. We sailed a lot in the waves and Pozo was a great preparation for Fuerteventura, what a windy place!

COMING UP The next event will be PWA Hvide Sande. On 12 August do I start working at the project of the reinforcement of the Afsluitdijk. The preparation for the racing in Denmark will I do in the evenings and weekend on the Amstelmeer.
