NEWLETTER #3 2019 PWA HVIDE SANDE After 7 racing days at the IFCA Denmark last year I was looking forward to this event. And YES Hvide Sande delivered again! Day one was a lay day but all the other days where just amazing. We raced in all different kinds of conditions, got to use all my sail and board sizes. The first racing day I crashed two times due to other sailors, who were not giving me space at the first mark and on the starting line. So a very disappointed start of the event, but I got back. The second day was super windy and wet, which gave small-board-fun on the choppy Ringkøbing Fjord. Third day we got great flatwater with 8.6 and big board. I had some real good battles and racing that day, great feeling on my birthday! The last two days I missed the qualification due some tactical mistakes. Overall PWA Hvide Sande was a great event, one of the best of the year! Going home with a 19th place.
REAL TRIP MAKKUM On the way back home I managed to join the second day of the Real-Trip. Super fun to start with +150 surfers at the start line, then race 4km in direction off to Stavoren, jibe and back to Makkum beach. I had good speed with 8.6 and my big board and crossed the finish line of the only race in first place.
FIRST PLACE AT THE DUTCH CHAMPIONS. After a good first stop in the beginning of the season at Stavoren. I had a comfortable lead in the year ranking before the second and last stop in Almere. We had light side off shore wind which didn’t made it easy to have a lot of results on the second stop. With 4 eliminations raced in 2019, I got the Dutch slalom Title in my pocket.

WINDY REGIOCUP ZUID A competition weekend with stormy weather and an amazing racing crew, we have been waiting on this for years in Holland! We did 18 races on two days! A lot of sailors were not used to do slalom racing in such strong wind but they all had a lot of fun! Easy 1st place for me.
GPA AALSMEER Three rounds sailing around the Westeinder Lake is the yearly race format. the lake is in the middle of the Netherlands which result in extreme gusty and shifty wind. So Go Big or Go home is the motto. 9.8 on the foil was BIG on some places of the lake. After a good start, I was leading the race until I had to go upwind overpowered. Happy to finish in second place after a race of an hour.
DAM-X FUN SLALOM The biggest surf-happening of the year in Holland was great again! EFPT freestyle, fun slalom, BBQ, music, promoting stands and much more. On Friday I gave a slalom training together with Jordy Vonk. Some theoretical lessons about the start procedure and jibe tactics. Follow by water practice on jibing and basic slalom stands. No wind on Saturday, but good vibes and party. Sunday the wind kicked in later than predicted but the profleet still could do 3 full fleet races with the 9.4.I finished the event in third place behind Ethan and Jordy.

DUTCH CHAMPIONSHIP FOIL 2019: 2ND PLACE With two good days on the foil tour, I’m happy to finish in 2nd place. I did not expect this result after being on the foil for only one year.
END OFF THE SEASON My season is over, no more competition on the 2019 calendar for me. I had a consistent season. My goal this year was to end every PWA event in the top 20 and I succeeded. (France 17 - Korea 15 – Fuerteventura 20 – Denmark 19) Beside the PWA slalom, I wanted to keep my Dutch slalom title and wanted to get better in foiling. Mission accomplishment.
COMING UP Winter mode is ON for the next couple of months. This means: working five days a week, gym in the evening, wave sailing with strong wind and slalom sailing otherwise and of course making plans for the upcoming season. My winter training will start in February 2020 in Tarifa followed by a month on Tenerife. Next year I will train and travel more together with my girlfriend Andrea BEL-26, who is now graduated as a dietitian and will join me more on training and competitions.
