From The
Publisher They say that laughter is the best medicine for what ails us. The more we laugh, the lighter we become. Although the light has left Robin Willams’ eyes, he is still with us in heart and mind. Whatever path Robin traveled, he brought us laughter and joy; and we loved him for it. From the first time I saw him on the “Mork and Mindy” show, I was hooked. His comedic dialogue and perfect timing were the hallmarks of his talents. Yes, it is sad when Robin made his transition and he will be missed; however, this is a time to celebrate this giant among men, and remember the laughter and good times he brought to all of us. Our world is changing. With each soul that makes their transition we are reminded of how precious life is on Earth. Although we may live in turbulent times, there is a strength deep inside each of us that helps us move forward in life. Life is a gift and with each passing moment, we are given the opportunity to live that life to the fullest of our abilities. How do we see our lives unfolding? Is it filled with kindness, joy, love, laughter, peace of mind? Or do we see it as dark clouds blocking the sunlight…bringing stress, anger, selfishness and chaos into our realm of existence? Do we allow outside influences to dictate our moods, reactions and choices? Or do we trust the inner workings of our Spirit to guide us to different outcomes? Ultimately the choice is ours. There is a book I highly recommend; Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…and it’s all small stuff by Richard Carlson. After reading this book, I realize that what happens in life happens and whether I caused it through my choices, it happened and all I can do is move forward. This little book of wisdom will definitely bring a new perspective to life and perhaps help us all move forward into the sunlight of living. We have all lost someone we loved and with that loss comes a deep sadness and mourning for the person no longer here. Saying goodbye is hard; however, it is in remembering the good times that keeps the loved one in our hearts and minds. Celebrate the life of your loved one as well as the transition into a better world. And remember, take joy in your life with each passing moment. Yes, Robin will be missed…and yet, he is no further away than a thought. May we all walk in the sunlight of life! Take care my friends. Blessings In Love & Light,

What Sets You OFF?
Jackie Woods
We all have trigger points that push our “upset button.” These trigger points come in a variety of sizes and subjects. But no matter the source, they have the power to change the color of one’s day.
While it is natural to have these upsets, it is not in your best interest to hang onto
them. Since the upsetting happening seems (at least to you) to be in obvious bad taste, you may think it’s your responsibility to correct the source. Even
though addressing the external source of your upset is quite acceptable, it rarely changes anything.
For example, it may annoy you for someone to use bad grammar. But if they have been speaking that way all their life, they are more than likely not going
to change just because you made them aware of their grammatical faux pas. Obviously their choice of language doesn’t bother them. Only your emotions are the victim of upset.
Because upset drains your energy and puts toxic stress on your liver, it behooves
you to unplug the upset button by resetting the trigger point. This means you
must internally give the offender permission to make choices. That is, of course, as long as those choices don’t physically endanger you.
This is easier said than done when you are dealing with something of importance to you. For instance, words register opposite mental pictures for me and my
husband. I might say something like, “The grandkids want to come visit.” And he
might hear, “The grandkids came to visit.” For the longest time this disconnect in our communication bugged me to no end. However, each time this kind of sharing snafu would happen, I would release a bit more of my need to be understood.
Of course, at first, I made him into the bad guy. In fact, when those moments of upset first happened, I believed him to be a communication idiot. But when
reason would return, I would own that I just wanted him to be a certain way so
I could be heard. Piece by piece I was able to let him interpret my words his way. As I have come to accept that his way of hearing and my way of speaking are not always on the same wave length, I have been able to include more repetition and clarification in our dialogues.
My liver is much happier and his defense mechanism has been able to take a
rest. Once in a while the urge to let myself have an “upset party” sets in. But it fizzles out in a hurry because I really know it is just a choice. Agreement of patterns is not necessary to have a happy life.

Real Security
While passing through the Honolulu airport I stopped for a moment to look at some items in a shop window. A female security guard approached me and struck up a casual conversation. She asked me where I was headed, and I told her I was on my way to Japan to teach some classes. “What do you teach?” she asked.
could see the fellow melt, on the verge of tears. He lingered in snuggling for a long time, obviously not wanting to let go of the little cutie. Finally he did, and told us, “It’s time. I need another dog. I will get one.” We wished him well as he went on his way. “A Course in Miracles” talks about “holy encounters.” That was one.
“I help people get in touch with their passion and purpose and live authentically,” I told her.
After dealing with a health challenge, my friend Bette decided to turn her life into a trust walk. She did things no one else would do, like leave her keys in her car ignition while the car was parked at a New Jersey mall. One day Bette picked up a young hitchhiker who told her that he had left his wife after a fight, but now he was going home to reconcile. Bette offered him the use of her new car to get home to see his wife. He promised to return the car early that evening. When he didn’t show up, Bette wondered if she had made a mistake. Finally he arrived with his wife, and both of them thanked her profusely for helping them get back together.
She lit up. “Then give me some tips, would you?” I asked her what was going on in her life. “I’m the single mother of nine children,” she told me. “Most of my time goes to my kids.” I placed my hand gently on her shoulder. “Is there anything you would like to do for yourself?” I asked her. “What could you do to nurture your own spirit?” Tears came to her eyes as she showed me her hand. “I’d just like to get my nails done. That would make me feel pretty.” I smiled and told her, “Then please do get your nails done. You’re worth it. You give so much to your kids. You deserve what makes you happy.” The woman smiled and told me, “I guess you’re right.” As I went on my way I thought about the fact that she was a security guard. We generally think of security as protecting our body and possessions from people who might violate them. Yet when we live in fear or a constant need to protect ourselves, we violate our spirit—a far greater injury than any that might occur to our possessions. Real security operates at a much deeper level than people who stand at the doors of banks and airports. Oddly enough, when I returned from Japan I had another synchronistic encounter with a security guard walking through the airport parking lot. Our caretaker had come to pick us up, our family of dogs waiting eagerly in the back of our SUV. As the guard passed, he saw the dogs and told us that he missed his beloved companion dog he had to put down over a year ago. “I’m still grieving,” he confessed, the burly morphing to a little boy as he spoke. My partner Dee, sensitive to the man’s open heart, asked him if he would like to hold our Maltese, Nani. He took the little dog and began to pet her affectionately. As he did, we

Real security is an inside job. You can take elaborate means to lock down your home, store, or computer programs, but if you are afraid, you are insecure. On the other hand, you can take few or no measures to protect your stuff, but if you feel safe in the universe, you are extremely secure.
I am not suggesting you leave your car with the keys in it or lend it to someone you don’t know. I am suggesting that safety and security are states of consciousness we choose. We are protected not simply by locks and gates, but by Higher Power. My friend Cliff Klein, an avid “Course in Miracles” student, heard someone in his Brooklyn apartment bedroom. He investigated to find that a burglar had entered through the fire escape. The man began to flee, but Cliff told him to wait. He asked the guy what was going on in his life that had caused him to break in. They had a heartfelt talk and Cliff gave the man some money to get some dinner. Cliff’s faith transformed a potentially dangerous situation into an altar of healing. Bette and Cliff were ordinary people with extraordinary faith. My encounters with those security guards were ordinary moments that led to extraordinary results. You and I have the power to transform any situation, especially ones in which feel insecure, into a demonstration that we have a security team functioning at a far more profound level than eyes can see. We are always secure if we remember the Source of our well being. As the proverb declares, “Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered. No one was there.”

Wisdom from Wayne
It's Your Choice
The truth is that there is no actual stress or anxiety in the world; it’s your thoughts that create these false beliefs.
There’s nothing natural about living a life filled with stress and anxiety, having feelings of despair or depression, and needing pills to tranquilize yourself. Agitated thoughts that produce high blood pressure, a nervous stomach, persistent feelings of discomfort, an inability to relax or sleep, and frequent displays of displeasure and outrage are violating your natural state. Believe it or not, you have the power to create the naturally stress-free and tranquil life you desire. You can utilize this power to attract frustration or joy, anxiety or peace. So, if it’s natural to have feelings of well-being, why is it that we seem to experience so much “un-wellness” and tension? The truth is that there is no actual stress or anxiety in the world; it’s your thoughts that create these false beliefs. You can’t package stress, touch it, or see it. There are only people engaged in stressful thinking. That pesky ego is at work when you’re experiencing stress or anxiety. We speak of stress as if it were present in the world as something that attacks us. But the stress in your body is rarely the result of external forces or entities attacking you; it’s the result of the weakened connection to Source caused
by the belief that ego is who you are. You are peace and joy, but you’ve allowed your ego to dominate your life. Here’s a short list of stressinducing thoughts that originate in your ego self: It’s more important to be right than to be happy; Winning is the only thing so when you lose, you should be stressed; Your reputation is more important than your relationship with your Source; Success is measured in dollars rather than in feeling happy and content; Being superior to others is more important than being kind to others. You aren’t your work, your accomplishments, your possessions, your home, your family … your anything. You’re a creation of your Source, dressed in a physical human body intended to experience and enjoy life on Earth. This is the intention that you want to bring to the presence of stress—your personal intention to be tranquil. Stress and anxiety are choices that we make, ways that we choose to process events. Each day we have hundreds of opportunities to shift our thoughts and align with the Source that intended us for lives of joy and peace. Namaste

Are You A
According Sophia
to
Lemming or an
eagle? “What do you really want?” “What is your passion?” are questions I often ask people. Often I am met with a blank (and sometimes embarrassed) stare. It is almost as if we have been programmed to bury our passions by a society that on one hand says it wants us to excel and then tries to hold us back when we do. We receive the mixed messages of “Anything and everything is possible—especially in America, the land of opportunity” and “No, Mary, girls (or No, John, boys) don’t do that.” There is a television ad about how a large percentage of girls are interested in science and math, yet few follow that path. The ad presents a story of a little girl, whose parents discourage her natural curiosity with comments such as “Come out of the tide pool, you’ll get dirty.” “Oh, this science project is getting way out of hand, you’d better stop.” “Be careful, give the electric drill to your brother so you don’t hurt yourself.” By the end of the ad, instead of reading the poster for a science fair, the girl uses her reflection in the glass case holding the poster to put on her lipstick. There could easily have been an ad showing a boy being held back from a desire to follow a path outside the male stereotype. Have you ever had this type of experience? You get excited about a new idea— goose bump excited—and you start down the path of bringing your idea into physical reality. Then SMACK you run into a wall of naysayers and dream busters. Yeah, me too; however, when the wall is put up by others, I’ve gotten pretty good at breaking through. It’s when the wall jumps up because of my past programming and self-doubts that I have more of a challenge. A few years ago a Scandinavian couple refused to tell anyone the sex of their newborn. They wanted their child to have the freedom to follow his/her natural interests rather than have family and society influence how he/she should behave. It wasn’t until the child was school age that the parents divulged the child’s sex. Imagine getting that kind of a head start. A world where you are encouraged to follow your own innate, natural curiosity and talents—and then celebrated and supported for whatever you felt guided to explore. I find that a lot of individuals are living down to other people’s and society’s expectations. When I’m coaching someone, I encourage them to take the time and introspection necessary to answer my questions: “What do you really want?” “What is your passion?” Recently I watched with delight as three individuals got in contact with their inner callings. One, had told me he had decided there wasn’t anything more for him to do, therefore no reason to think about the future. He recently realized there were still some things that excited him, and he was working toward making them happen. Another person was finally writing down all his wants and desires and creating goals. He contacted me for guidance regarding guidance on the “how to” on a few of the items. The third individual knew what she wanted but thought it was impossible. As we talked and I asked “what if” questions, her face lit up as she realized the “impossible” was very possible. She started taking action that day. In each instance I did a little happy dance inside. How about you? Are you living down to other people’s or society’s expectations? Or are you living up to your personal passion? You and I can either be lemmings and jump off the cliff of living down, or we can soar like the eagles we are meant to be. However, before you can move from lemming to eagle, you need to figure out what you want in life. Start noticing thoughts of “Oh, wouldn’t that be nice to have in my life?” or “I wonder if I could do that?” Write them down. As you focus on these inner stirrings, you will begin to see possibilities that were not present in your thoughts in the past—or you may rediscover desires long since buried. As your field of possibilities increases, use the momentum to grow your list. Revisit your list, embrace it, make the items on it your friend, and allow yourself
to become excited and inspired. Under no circumstances share your list and your enthusiasm with any lemmings around you. Look for an eagle to share with. Your eagle could be a trusted friend or family member, a co-worker, your spiritual leader, or a coach. Because they are eagles, they will encourage and support you on your path. They will take you to the edge of the cliff and teach you to fly. If you’re already an eagle, remember to pause to appreciate and celebrate yourself. Then soar even higher. People Pleasing
Your need for other people's approval puts them in control of your happiness. No one deserves that power over you. By Doreen Virtue
Your need for other people’s approval puts them in control of your happiness. No one deserves that power over you. You seek approval to avoid conflict. You have an uncanny sense about what other people want to hear, and you know how to feed it to them in heaping spoonfuls! Meanwhile, the other person believes you’re the nicest person on the planet—which you are, except there’s an authentic and real version of your nice self masked behind “people-pleasing.” “People-pleasing” takes the phrase “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all” to a whole new twisted level. It means you’re pretending to be someone different from who you really are, in order to control how another person reacts to you. You try to prevent the other person from being angry with you, leaving you, or firing you by being extra-compliant and phony-nice. Or, the flip side is you try to control them into liking you, marrying you, promoting you in the company … all by pretending to believe what they believe and laughing at their jokes and having a false front. So people-pleasing is a dysfunctional and ultimately manipulative and dishonest way of relating to other people. There’s nothing pleasing about people-pleasing! You can be pleasant and very kind, thoughtful, and nice while still being genuine and honest with others. In fact, the most charming people are those who tell you the truth in a loving way. This is the combination for Earth Angels to aspire to: being real, nice, loving, and honest.
speak up about the issues that are near and dear to their hearts. For instance, if your child is having a difficulty with a teacher, it’s very appropriate for you to hold meetings with either that teacher or the principal. This is an example of you taking action because you love your child. You speak up and are honest because that’s the only way to protect him or her. In personal situations, being genuine can bring blessings, too. For example, let’s say you and a group of friends go to see a movie. The movie is awful, and you don’t want to see any more of it. You look over at your girlfriends and they’re squirming in their seats and seem to not be enjoying themselves either. So, you whisper to the friend next to you: “I’m not enjoying this movie … are you?” Your girlfriend smiles with an expression of relief that you’ve put into words exactly how she feels. It turns out that none of your girlfriends like the movie, but they’re afraid to say anything and ruin everyone else’s time. Because you had the courage to speak up, the evening is saved! You leave the movie early and go to a restaurant and enjoy a nice meal together instead. If you were people-pleasing, you’d endure that movie because you wouldn’t want to spoil other people’s fun. But, because you had the courage to speak up, you actually helped your friends. And you’ll find this is the case in nearly every situation where you speak up.
Everyone can relate to real human emotions. So when you admit how you really feel, it’s a relief to people to know that others feel the same way they do. In this way, by being honest with others, you’re being a teacher to them about how to live an authentic life. Many people confuse being honest with being aggressive. That’s because for so many years, the average nice person was passive and silent. But that has all changed, thank goodness! These days, it’s essential for nice people to PAGE 10 • September, 2014 • IN LIGHT TIMES
Again, speaking up doesn’t mean aggression. Speaking up simply means you own your feelings and state them clearly without blaming anyone else and without anger or sarcasm. People-pleasing is a form of being c o n t ro l l i n g a n d m a n i p u l a t i v e . It stems from fear, not from love. People-pleasing comes from a place of unworthiness and undeserving feelings. You’re convinced other people won’t like or love you if you show them who you really are. Remember that you’re a creation of God, made in the image and likeness of the Divine Creator! Everyone and everything has divinity and inherent natural beauty and uniqueness. You are Divine! It sounds counterintuitive, but you’ll like yourself more when you’re genuine with others. The more you can embrace your unique self and trust your passions and interests to guide you upon the path of your purpose, the more you’ll find like-minded friends. If you’ve been teased for being weird or odd, that’s a sign you have special qualities and uniqueness the world needs. How drab and boring would it be if everyone was alike? And in some circles of people, it’s an insult to be called “normal.” If you people-please, everyone will know it. People-pleasers never get away with their act. Others know you’re faking your feelings, laughter,
and smile, and they’ll doubt your sincerity and integrity. They won’t trust you, and they’ll wonder what else you might be dishonest about. So people-pleasing can sabotage your credibility in business, and your trustworthiness in relationships. Pretending in order to be liked or to fit in with others never works! For one thing, it’s exhausting to put on a front for very long. You’ll find you’re absolutely drained of energy and enthusiasm from pretending to be someone other than who you really are. Plus, pretending detaches you from your real feelings. You’ll forget who you really are after a while. You’ll give up your true interests. And no matter how many friends you’ve attracted as your false self, you’ll still feel lonely and unloved because they don’t love you for your true self. The only way to fill your heart is to take the risk of being your authentic self publicly, and then let nature take its course. The people who don’t respect you aren’t allowed to be in your life anymore. The people who are attracted to your uniqueness are possible friends, provided you’re also attracted to the idea of being friends with them . . . and they treat you with respect. Remember, there’s never been a person in history who was universally loved by everyone, so don’t waste your time with this impossible goal. Be yourself and you’ll attract like-minded people. Other people can feel when you’re being genuine and sincere. They’ll relax around you and respect you more when you let go of trying to control others’ opinions about you, and allow your true feelings and natural reactions to shine. And you’ll know the real you is being loved and appreciated, which will increase self-confidence and self-esteem!

10 Steps To Organize & Simplify Life is interesting. No sooner do we think we have everything organized, neat, tidy, and running like clockwork, suddenly everything is turned upside down. We are left wondering what happened? Usually what happened is that we are organized enough so we can get through the day with our to-do-list mostly done only to start the next day doing the same thing. A week goes by, a month and maybe a year, and you asked yourself where the time went. And more importantly, where did I go? The ME that had goals, dreams, hopes, wishes; what happened to the “me” in the year. Where did I go in the endless to-do lists? The reality is we lost our way; if we ever knew it in the first place. We were so busy DOING, we forgot about BEING. We lost our North Star. Our guiding light. That is if we ever had it! "It is an ironic habit of human beings to run faster when we have lost our way". Rollo May - psychologist But help is on the way; if you are prepared to stop for a moment, take a breath, and re-program how you live your life. How you can find your North Star and head for its’ light. Ten Easy Workable Steps…Ready? • Identify your life values What is important to you? What trait or personality aspect do you admire in someone? What is a must have for you in life (i.e. access to outdoor recreation, music, friendships, integrity, physical health, humor, a strong work ethic, etc., etc.) List your top 5 or 6.

planning gets them out of the way until you can focus on them. It’s a great tool for releasing stress. • Check on the path At least once a month, look at your day-to-day and use of time against your priorities and values. Airplanes, cruise ships and major corporations have compass directional correcting tools – it’s easy to go off direction. Set sight on your North star, and keep checking in to make sure you’re on course. • Be open to new ways of thinking and problem solving You may have a heated discussion with a colleague or family member about your priories, goals and direction. It doesn’t hurt to listen and ask yourself, "what if I did this?" Bring considered thinking into everything; avoid the knee jerk response of thinking your decision is unchangeable…maybe it is (and should be) and maybe it isn’t. However, you won’t know if you don’t ask – what if…? • Make time to relax and have fun You’ll become bored and boring if you don’t! You may also become stressed and ill and that’s no fun. Or productive! Book time out for yourself, your family and friends – enjoy life, stay healthy, vibrant and productive. And find yourself again.

Choose a top priority for the next six months; then 6 months after that. If you don’t know where you want to go, how are you going to get there? Think about the one thing that will make a difference in your life. The one thing that will allow you to focus your energy, mind space and help prioritize your time. Write up and post your values and priorities – make them visible every day. Keep them in full view…on your computer screen, on the fridge, in a frame next to your bed. So that everywhere your eye falls, there’s a reminder of the future you’ve planned. • Make considered decisions Not everything that seems like a good idea necessarily is. If we follow every idea that comes into our mind, or that someone else suggests – we are inclined to go off course and forget priorities and values – time and mind space are limited. Focus! • Understand cause and effect In business they call this opportunity cost. If I do this (whatever it is) what will it cost – in time, energy, results, and is it worth it? Considered thinking is valuable – it won’t block brilliant ideas if they are considered well. Everything we do has a cost – is what we are about to do worth the cost? (by the way, this is a great discussion to have with your children!) • Is it urgent or important? There is a huge difference. Urgent can take you off course – importance impacts your long term goals and vision. If you live from crisis to crisis where everything is urgent, maybe you’re an adrenaline junky? Or you need to look at your day, week, month and lifestyle, and see what needs to be shifted, changed or released so that you’re not forever putting out fires. • Set aside regular time to problem solve Especially for the little ‘niggly’ day-to-day problems which keep cropping up. Plan a regular 2 or 3 hour timeslot to go over the ‘problem job jar’ and solve the problem – with a series of actions in accordance with your values. This IN LIGHT TIMES • september, 2014 • PAGE 11
Scent Games Educating Your Dog’s Nose
By John Rice & Suzanne Clothier
the SEEK command pays off. He learns to believe you - there really is another one there! You can increase the difficulty of LIGHTS OUT by hiding the cookies in less accessible places (like in a shoe, or placed on a low shelf.) This can be practiced outdoors as well as in your car, or a parking lot or anywhere else! HIDE & SEEK: This is a doggy favorite best played at night or in a darkened house initially. Partially open closets are great (closed closets may not allow sufficient scent to escape), as are shower stalls/tubs with the curtain drawn, standing behind an open door, crouching behind a bush, standing very still near a tree (dogs, like all predators, distinguish movement much better than stationary objects) or sitting on a picnic table or laying across your car’s trunk, or wherever!
Easy exercises & games to teach any dog scent discrimination as a fun & enjoyable game using his natural talents. Long before you pull out the tracking flags, dust off the utility articles or decide that your dog needs to learn how to use his nose, he’s busy using his nose to explore his world. The sense of smell is functional at birth, and from the moment he’s born, your dog lives in a world rich with scents. All you need to do is teach the dog specifically how you want him to use his astonishing olfactory powers. The easiest way to accomplish this is through games. The Scent Work Games presented below are suitable for any breed at any age from 6 weeks on, but we recommend strongly that these games be a regular part of your puppy’s development. All of these games stress reliance on his nose, not his eyesight.
To add to the dog’s eagerness (or in the event that you are unable to sneak away or can’t leave the dog), have someone hold the dog. They should be verbally exciting to the dog, asking, “Where did she go? What is she gets lost? Can you FIND her?” and release the dog with a FIND IT command. Give the dog a chance to work it out, but if he passes you more than twice, give him a “clue” by making a noise AFTER he’s passed you the third time. A good clue is a distinctive but brief sound, such as clearing your throat or a short whistle that does not allow the dog to find you by using his hearing, but helps him target the general area you are in for further investigation with his nose. However the dog finds you, tons of praise is to be heaped upon his head, and of course a treat or two never hurts. Toy motivated dogs will delight in a game
To avoid confusing your dog, we recommend you choose one word that indicates food or dog toys (we use “SEEK”), and a completely different word for objects with human scent or people themselves (we use “FIND IT”). In this fashion, the dog is always clear about WHAT he’s looking for with his nose and will not confuse food scents with human scent. One of the most common problems with using food to teach scent discrimination or tracking is that you must ultimately teach the dog that the food is not what you really meant at all! WHICH HAND? This is the simplest of all games. With food or a toy in only one hand, present both closed hands to the dog. Ask him, “Which one?” You may improve upon this game by insisting he touch with a paw or scratch lightly at the correct hand before receiving his treat, or simply have his nose bump your hand. If he gets it wrong, show him the correct hand but DO NOT give the treat! Just try again. Add lots of dramatic flair to this - dogs love a good show.
of fetch or tugging as a reward.
LIGHTS OUT: This one is great fun for the dog. Show your dog a treat (preferably crunchy) or his favorite toy, and then place it out of his sight but easily accessible in a dark room. Tell him to SEEK - follow him in to listen for his success - which you will praise enthusiastically. Obviously, the rewards for the dog are multiple - he gets a treat or finds his toy plus a very happy handler. If using a toy, be sure to reward his find with some play before starting again.
As the dog gets more skilled at HIDE & SEEK, you can increase the difficulty of the game by throwing a blanket or tarp over yourself, not moving until the dog actually touches you, or even hiding in an area that the dog can smell you, see you (or part of you) but cannot get to you. This is useful for teaching a scratch or bark alert if desired (commonly used in drug work/search and rescue training). ALWAYS praise the dog generously for his brilliance.
When multiple treats or toys are used, this particular game helps to build persistence and trust in the handler. The dog may initially find only 2 out of 3 treats, but he quickly discovers that persistence in searching when you give
WHAT A KLUTZ: This game allows you to show the dog how important his nose is to you. Dogs like to feel useful, and this particular game helps boost a dog’s confidence and self importance. As you are walking, discreetly drop an
PAGE 12 • September, 2014 • IN LIGHT TIMES
object you have been carrying or held in your pocket. Continue walking for 10-15 steps, then stop as if mildly concerned, patting your pockets and looking around. Here’s your chance to really put on a performance! Ask the dog, “Where is it? Can you help? Can you FIND IT?”
Great Animal Pix
Begin walking back towards the spot where you dropped the article, encouraging the dog to sniff the ground by pointing and telling him to FIND IT. As you get closer to the object, give the dog a little room so that he can find it all by himself. If he needs help, try a subtle kick of the object (after all, you are the klutz who dropped it - why not go ahead and trip over it too?) to bring it to his attention while you pretend not to notice. Once the dog indicates the article, make a huge fuss over this genius who has saved you from dropping an old glove! Vary the type of article you use, and be sure to include metal objects such as car keys, a crumpled soda can, even a ring or bracelet you have worn. Obviously, be careful when you drop these and be sure you can find them again! Don’t use valuable items - just facsimiles. Your dog’s ability and willingness to work on metal objects will be helpful in the Utility ring, but more importantly, this skill could come in very handy some day should you lose your car keys. NOTE: Metal/hard objects do not hold scent as well as fabric or leather. This does not mean that your dog can’t find them, just that his reaction may be different and he will probably have to work closer to the object before locating it. The difficulty of WHAT A KLUTZ can be increased by: longer periods of time between the drop and the search, having the object thrown to the side or even off the path you are traveling, and multiple object drops. Especially fun are surprise set-ups where you plant an object along a path before taking the dog that way. You may point out the object to the dog with a question of “What’s that?” and praise him for investigating, or walk past it and then send him back with a FIND IT command. This is a great preparation for tracking dogs who must learn to indicate on found items. A final twist for tracking prospects is the addition of objects dropped by people other than yourself. Be warned - this can be so much fun for the dog that he’ll gladly show you all the neat trash dropped by other folks along the street, in the rest areas, etc.! John had been shown some unusual objects by his dogs while simply out walking. 3-2-1-FIND IT: Use a favorite toy or even just a stick that you come across in the woods. After a few moments of playing with object, hold the dog as you throw the object into grass, brush, woods thick enough to lightly disguise the object. The dog may see and “mark” the fall of the object, but as the difficulty of the game increases, this will only help him define the area he needs to search. Once the object has landed and stopped moving, count to 3 before releasing the dog to “FIND IT.” You may gradually increase the time before releasing the dog, and of course, the heaviness of the cover (one good reason to avoid mowing your lawn regularly!) THINGS THAT GET LOST IN THE NIGHT: Using the same rules as 3-2-1-Find It, this game relies on the natural cover of darkness to encourage the dog to use his nose. Instead of marking the fall with his eyes, your dog may listen carefully. Once again, this only helps the dog narrow the area he will have to search. This can be played inside (throwing the object into a dark closet, corner or room) or outside. When beginning this game, don’t get too enthusiastic and throw the toy very far. The point of all these games is success, not frustration for the dog. Also, be sure YOU know where the heck it landed in case the dog needs some help. ONE & ONLY: This is a more advanced scent game, but extremely useful to teach the dog the concept that only one object is desired from a group of similar objects. I normally start this with tennis balls (my dogs’ favorites). Play with the dog for several minutes with the One & Only object you’ll want the dog to find. This allows your scent (as well as lots of good dog spit) to thoroughly cover the object. Then move off to an area where you have planted several similar objects. Throw the One & Only into that area, using a 3-2-1-Find It technique. If the dog picks up an incorrect object, say nothing as you take it and put it down or pocket it, but with enthusiasm, give the FIND IT command again, leading the dog back to the general area to be searched if needed. Obviously, when the dog gets it right, reward this with a minute or two of play before repeating ONE & ONLY again. This can be combined with the more difficult levels of 3-2-1-FIND IT for really advanced discrimination by the dog. Once your dog has mastered these games, any formal scent discrimination exercise becomes a snap for that educated nose. Furthermore, you have learned to understand just how powerfully discriminating a dog’s nose can be, and to trust that when it comes to working in a world of scent your best bet is to follow the guy who knows what he’s doing - your dog.

Myth #1 Breakfast Is the Healthiest Meal of the Day & You Should Eat Many Small Meals a Day
here is no shortage of health advice out there, and no shortage of bad advice to go along with it. Some misguided notions are harmless— but others are outright dangerous and can lead you down the road to chronic health problems and may even trim years off your life.
In an article addressing nutritional myths, Kris Gunnars of Authority Nutrition is among those admirably trying to bust the dangerous dietary myths that continue being spread by so many nutritionists. I agree with the majority of his points, but have added a few others I believe to be important. Read on for my own top 10 list, which builds upon his. Myth #1 Breakfast Is the Healthiest Meal of the Day & You Should Eat Many Small Meals a Day How many of you had mothers who would not let you leave the house without breakfast? Mother may have known best about some things—but as it turns out, this wasn’t one of them. There is now a good deal of research supporting the health benefits of intermittent fasting—which is what you were really doing by zipping out of the house without breakfast. Recent studies suggest that intermittent fasting can provide the same health benefits as constant calorie restriction; which many studies have shown to dramatically increase life span in animals. It may also be helpful for those who cannot successfully reduce their everyday calorie intake. Besides turning you into an efficient fat burner, intermittent fasting can also boost your level of human growth hormone production (aka the “fitness hormone”) by as much as 1,200 percent for women and 2,000 percent for men. Intermittent fasting and continuous calorie restriction have both been shown to produce weight loss and improve metabolic risk markers. However, intermittent fasting tends to be slightly more effective for reducing insulin resistance. Other benefits include reducing inflammation, improving blood pressure, and increased lean body mass. Intermittent fasting can also improve your brain function by increasing levels of BDNF, a protein that protects your brain cells from the changes associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. There are several types of intermittent fasting to choose from, so I recommend experimenting to see what style works best for you. One of the easiest, however, is to simply skip breakfast. Limit your eating to a narrow window of time each day—say between 11am and 7pm, to start. The advice to “eat six small meals per day” comes from seemingly logical principles (portion control, keeping your energy up, stabilizing blood sugar, etc.), but in reality, eating this way has not been shown to provide these benefits. We seem to need periods of fasting for optimal metabolic function. And, if you think about it, our ancient ancestors never had access to a grocery store 24/7 and they went through regular periods of feast and famine. The problem is that most of us are in 24/7 feast mode. Implementing intermittent fasting is the quickest way I know of to jump start your body into burning fat as its primary fuel again. Myth #2 Saturated Fat Causes Heart Disease The dangerous recommendation to avoid saturated fat, which arose from an PAGE 16 • September, 2014 • IN LIGHT TIMES
Dr. Joseph Mercola
unproven hypothesis from the mid-1950s, has been harming people’s health for about 40 years now. As recently as 2002, the “expert” Food & Nutrition Board issued the following misguided statement, which epitomizes this myth: “Saturated fats and dietary cholesterol have no known beneficial role in preventing chronic disease and are not required at any level in the diet.” Similarly, the National Academies’ Institute of Medicine recommends that adults get 45-65% of their calories from carbohydrates, 20-35% from fat, and 10-35% from protein. This is the polar opposite of an ideal fat to carb ratio and virtually guarantees you a heightened risk of disease. Most people benefit from a diet where 50-85% of daily calories are derived from healthful fats. However, you need very few, if any, carbohydrates for optimal health. Although that amount of fat may seem like a lot, fat is very calorie-dense, and will therefore still constitute the smallest amount, in terms of volume, on your plate. The truth is, saturated fats from animal and vegetable sources provide the building blocks for your cell membranes and a variety of hormones and hormonelike substances, without which your body cannot function optimally. Fats also serve as carriers for the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K and are required for converting carotene into vitamin A, absorbing minerals, and a host of other important biological processes. Saturated fat is also the preferred fuel for your heart! Good sources of healthy fats to add to your diet include: Avacados Coconuts & coconut oil
Butter from raw grain-fed organic milk Unheated organic nut oils
Raw dairy
Organic pastured egg yolks
Raw nuts, especially macadamia & raw seeds
Grass-fed & finished meats
Myth #3 High Omega-6 Seed and Vegetable Oils Are Good for You Of all the health-destroying foods on the market, those made with highly processed vegetable and seed oils are some of the worst. When consumed in large amounts, as they are by most Americans, they seriously distort your important omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. In a perfect world, this ratio is 1:1; however, the average American is getting 20 to 50 times more omega-6 fats than omega-3 fats. Excessive omega-6 fats from processed foods significantly increase your risk for heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other illnesses. The cholesterol found in arterial plaque is oxidized, damaged cholesterol, which your immune system identifies as bacteria. In response, your immune system sends out macrophages to attack it, which creates inflammation inside your artery walls. A major factor driving heart disease is this oxidized cholesterol, which you introduce into your body every time you consume vegetable oils, or foods cooked in them. Many vegetable and seed oils are also genetically engineered, (GMO) which only compounds their health risk. More than 90 percent of US canola oil is GE. So
F eature S tory The more you can eat like your ancestors, the better—fresh whole foods, locally and sustainably raised, and foods that are minimally processed or not processed at all. These are the types of foods that your genes and biochemistry are adapted to and will provide you with the ability to reverse and prevent most diseases. You will be amazed at the positive changes you’ll see in your health when you “clean up” your diet! what’s the best oil to cook with? Of all the available oils, coconut oil is the one of choice for cooking because it’s close to a completely saturated fat—meaning, much less susceptible to heat damage. And coconut oil is one of the most nutritionally beneficial fats. For more information about coconut oil, please see our special report. Olive oil, while certainly a healthful oil, is easily damaged by heat and is best reserved for drizzling cold over salad.
told that whole grains are highly beneficial. Unfortunately, ALL grains can elevate your insulin and leptin levels; even whole grains and organic varieties. Also, elevated insulin/leptin increases your risk of chronic disease. This is especially true if you already struggle with insulin/leptin resistance, which would manifest as high blood pressure, distorted cholesterol ratios, being overweight, or diabetes).
Myth #4 Artificial Sweeteners Are Safe Sugar Replacements for Diabetics and Help Promote Weight Loss Most people use artificial sweeteners to lose weight and/or because they are diabetic and need to avoid sugar. The irony is, nearly all studies to date show that artificial sweeteners cause even MORE weight gain than caloric sweeteners. Studies also show that artificial sweeteners can be worse than sugar for diabetics.
It has been my experience that more than 85% of Americans have trouble controlling their insulin and leptin levels and have one or more of the symptoms listed above. You may be one of those if you struggle to maintain an ideal body weight and body composition, tend to accumulate fat around you belly, or have a suboptimal lipid profile. In fact, insulin/leptin dysregulation is a common indicator for many of the diseases so prevalent today, such as diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and cancer.
In 2005, data gathered from the 25-year long San Antonio Heart Study showed that drinking diet soft drinks increased the likelihood of serious weight gain much more so than regular soda. On average, each diet soda the participants consumed per day increased their risk of becoming overweight by 65% within the next seven to eight years and made them 41% more likely to become obese. There are several possible reasons for this, such as:
Many whole grains also contain gluten, which is a common trigger for allergies and sensitivities. Subclinical gluten intolerance is far more common than you might think, with symptoms not always obvious. I strongly recommend eliminating or at least restricting grains from your diet, as well as sugars; fructose especially if you have any of the conditions listed above. As a general rule, the higher your insulin levels are, the greater your grain restriction should be.
•
Sweet taste alone appears to increase hunger, regardless of caloric content.
•
Artificial sweeteners appear to perpetuate a craving for sweets; therefore, overall sugar consumption is not reduced, leading to further problems with weight control.
•
Artificial sweeteners may disrupt your body’s natural ability to “count calories,” as evidenced by multiple studies. For example, a Purdue University study found that rats fed artificially sweetened liquids ate more high-calorie food than rats fed high-caloric sweetened liquids.
Myth #7 Genetically Engineered Foods Are Safe and Comparable to Conventional Foods Genetic engineering (GE) of our food may be the most dangerous aspect of our food supply today. I strongly recommend you avoid ALL GE foods. Since more than 90% of the corn and 95% of the soy grown in the US are GE, then you can count on virtually every processed food having at least one GE component if it doesn’t bear the “USDA 100% Organic” or non-GMO label. Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of them is that the crops are saturated with one of the most dangerous herbicides on the market, glyphosate, to the tune of nearly a billion pounds per year. This toxic chemical can’t be washed off as it becomes integrated into nearly every cell of the plant, and then gets transferred into your body.
The list of health risks associated with artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame, continues to expand. I maintain an ongoing list of studies related to the detrimental effects of aspartame, which I recommend you review for yourself if you are still on the fence. I invite you to watch my aspartame video, as well. Myth #5 Soy Is a Health Food The meteoric rise of soy as a “health food” is a perfect example of how a brilliant marketing strategy can fool millions. But make no mistake—unfermented soy products are NOT healthful additions to your diet, regardless of your age or gender. I am not opposed to all soy—properly fermented and preferably organic soy, such as tempeh, miso, and natto, offer great health benefits, courtesy of the beneficial bacteria (probiotics) the fermentation process produces. Thousands of studies have linked unfermented soy to a number of health problems. However, more than 90% of American soy crops are also genetically engineered [GMO], which only compounds its health risks. The following table lists a number of damaging health effects science has linked to unfermented soy: Breast cancer Kidney stones Diegestive issues
Brain damage & cognitive impairment Immune dysfunction
Problems with pregnancy and breastfeeding
Heart disease
Thyroid disorders
Severe potentially fatal food allergies
Malnutrition
Reproductive disorders and impaired fertility
Developmental abnormalities in infants
Myth #6 Whole Grains Are Good for Everyone The use of whole grains is an easy subject to get confused about, especially for those with a passion for health and nutrition. For the longest time, we’ve been
No one knows exactly what will be the ultimate impact of these foods on your health, particularly over the long term. Animal studies have pointed to increased disease, infertility, and birth defects as the top contenders. The first-ever lifetime feeding study showed a dramatic increase in organ damage, cancer, and reduced lifespan. It’s important to realize that, unless you’re buying all organic food or growing your own, you’re probably consuming GE foods on a daily basis. In order to avoid as many GE foods as possible, be aware that the following common crops are likely to be GE unless otherwise labeled: Corn Soy
Zucchini
Canola
Cottonseed
Crookneck squash
Alfalfa
Sugar from sugar beets Hawaiian papaya
Myth #8 Eggs Are Bad for Your Heart Eggs are one of the most demonized foods in the US…thanks to the cholesterol myth. The misguided belief that cholesterol, such as in egg yolks, will give you heart disease is simply untrue (see Myth #1). Studies have shown that eggs do NOT have a detrimental impact on cholesterol levels and are actually one of the most healthful foods you can eat. In one Yale study, participants were asked to consume two eggs daily for six weeks. Researchers found that this egg consumption did not spike cholesterol levels and did not have a negative effect on endothelial function, a measure of cardiac risk. Choose pasture-raised organic eggs, and avoid “omega-3 eggs” as this is not the proper way to optimize your omega-3 levels. To produce these omega-3 eggs, the hens are usually fed poor-quality sources of omega-3 fats that are already oxidized. Omega-3 eggs are also more perishable than non-omega-3 Continued On Page 24 * IN LIGHT TIMES • september, 2014 • PAGE 17

It is no secret that many and often most of the ingredients in body care products are harmful. When asked, most people say they would love to have the time, energy and knowledge to make their own creams, lotions and potions but alas, they do not. The good news is that there are more craft and herb shops around town than ever that carry all the ingredients you need in one stop shopping. Many of these specialty shops also have classes available too. The really good news is that you don’t really need a class because there are some easy to make yet high quality products you can make right in your own kitchen. Making your own products is lots of fun and you can make enough product in one session to last you months and months. Here is a simple recipe for face & body cream that makes a big jar full of luscious, moisturizing cream you will absolutely love.
Luscious Moisturizing Face & Body Cream ingredients
2 oz 2 oz 1 oz 1 oz 10 gm 10 1 cup
Extra Virgin Olive Oil Jojoba, Apricot kernel or Sesame oil Coconut oil Shea butter Beeswax Drops Essential oil (optional) Water
1. Put water and essential oil into blender and sit aside 2. Put oils, shea butter and beeswax in water bath. To make a water bath: put oils and water in Pyrex measuring cup and place that cup in a small pot of water. You can kind of hang the measuring cup on the side of the pot so water does not enter the cup. 3. Place this over low heat just long enough to melt beeswax into oils. Do not let oil get too hot. 4. Remove from heat and let oil/beeswax mixture cool a bit until you see a light rim of hardened beeswax forming on the side of the cup. 5. Turn blender with water on high and begin slowly pouring your oil water mixture into the center until all the oil is gone. Depending on your blender, you may have to start at a lower speed and increase as more oil/beeswax mixture goes in. 6. This is the emulsion process that transforms oil and water into your amazing luscious cream. You may have to use a chopstick or knife to help stir your cream in a bit so be careful of the blades at the bottom of your blender. 7. If you need to add more essential oils, add them now and only turn blender on long enough to blend in the essential oils. Careful not to over blend. 8. Put your beautiful cream into cream jars. Keep one out to use and store the rest in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it! There are some great books available on the market too. Check out Earthly Bodies & Heavenly Hair by Dina Falconi. This is a great book to get you started – enjoy!

Blood Sugar Diabetes
&
Blood sugar is an important issue for anyone who is concerned about heart disease, overweight, hypoglycemia, and especially diabetes because it affects all of these conditions. Carbohydrates in our foods are broken down in the digestive tract and converted into glucose (blood sugar). Meals that contain a high concentration of carbohydrates, particularly simple carbohydrates such as sugar and refined flours, cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. Since elevated blood sugar can lead to a coma and death, insulin is frantically pumped into the blood stream to avoid this. If insulin is produced in adequate amounts blood sugar is soon brought back down to normal. This is what happens in most individuals. However, if insulin is not produced quickly enough or the cells become desensitized to the action of insulin, blood glucose can remain elevated for extended periods of time. This is what happens in diabetes. Dietary fiber helps moderate swings in blood sugar by slowing down the absorption of sugar into the blood stream. This helps keep blood sugar and insulin levels under control. Coconut fiber has been shown to be very effective in moderating blood sugar and insulin levels. For this reason, coconut is good for diabetics. Diabetics are encouraged to eat foods that have a relatively low glycemic index. The glycemic index is a measure of how foods affect blood sugar levels. The higher the glycemic index, the greater an effect a particular food has on raising blood sugar. So diabetics need to eat foods with a low glycemic index. When coconut is added to foods, including those high in starch and sugar, it lowers the glycemic index of these foods. This was clearly demonstrated by T.P. Trinidad and colleagues in a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2003. In their study, both normal and diabetic subjects were given a variety of foods to eat. Some of the types of food included cinnamon bread, granola bars, carrot cake, and brownies—all foods that a diabetic must ordinarily limit because of their high sugar and starch content. It was found that as the coconut content of the foods increased, the blood sugar response between the diabetic and non-diabetic subjects became nearly identical. In other words, coconut moderated the release of sugar into the bloodstream so that there was no spike in blood glucose levels. As the coconut content in the foods decreased, the diabetic subjects’ blood sugar levels became elevated, as would normally be expected from eating foods high in sugar and white flour. This study showed that adding coconut to foods lowers the glycemic index of the foods and keeps blood sugar levels under control. Sweet foods such as cookies and cakes made using coconut flour do not affect blood sugar levels like those made with wheat flour. This is good news for diabetics who want a treat now and then without adversely affecting their blood sugar. ** Low-GI foods (55 and under): oatmeal, peanuts, peas, carrots, kidney beans, hummus, skim milk, most fruits (except those listed a@ www.WebMD.com and watermelon).

The Best and Worst Forms of Magnesium to Take as a Supplement
By Michael Ravensthorpe
A
ccording to the American Chiropractic Society, an estimated 68 to 80 percent of the United States population is deficient in the essential mineral magnesium. While our growing dependence on processed food is partly responsible for this alarming statistic, the real reason for it is that ongoing soil erosion has significantly depleted the mineral content of our soil within the last century. Consequently, many fruits and vegetables that were once rich in magnesium no longer contain it in adequate amounts, resulting in widespread deficiencies. For this reason, an increasing number of people are turning to magnesium supplements to boost their intake of this vital nutrient. However, since magnesium must be bound to another substance before it can be adequately absorbed, magnesium supplements come in a number of different forms that provide different, or targeted, health benefits. This article takes a closer look at the best (and worst) forms of magnesium on the market today.
The BEST forms of magnesium Magnesium citrate -- Magnesium citrate is the most popular magnesium
supplement, probably because it is inexpensive and easily absorbed. Since citric acid is a mild laxative, magnesium citrate functions as a constipation aid as well as a magnesium source. It is a great choice for individuals with rectal or colon problems but is unsuitable for those with loose bowel movements.
Magnesium taurate -- Magnesium taurate is the best choice of magnesium supplement for people with cardiovascular issues, since it is known to prevent arrhythmias and guard the heart from damage caused by heart attacks. Magnesium taurate is easily absorbed (magnesium and taurine stabilize cell membranes together), and it contains no laxative properties. Magnesium malate -- Magnesium malate is a fantastic choice for people
suffering from fatigue, since malic acid -- a natural fruit acid present in most cells in the body -- is a vital component of enzymes that play a key role in ATP synthesis and energy production. Since the ionic bonds of magnesium and malic acid are easily broken, magnesium malate is also highly soluble.
Magnesium glycinate
-- Magnesium glycinate (magnesium bound with glycine, a non-essential amino acid) is one of the most bioavailable and absorbable forms of magnesium, and also the least likely to induce diarrhea. It is the safest option for correcting a long-term deficiency.
Magnesium chloride -- Though magnesium chloride only contains
around 12 percent elemental magnesium, it has an impressive absorption rate
PAGE 20 • September, 2014 • IN LIGHT TIMES
and is the best form of magnesium to take for detoxing the cells and tissues. Moreover, chloride (not to be confused with chlorine, the toxic gas) aids kidney function and can boost a sluggish metabolism.
Magnesium carbonate -- Magnesium carbonate is another popular, bioavailable form of magnesium that actually turns into magnesium chloride when it mixes with the hydrochloric acid in our stomachs. It is a good choice for people suffering from indigestion and acid reflux, since it contains antacid properties.
...many fruits and vegetables that were once rich in magnesium no longer contain it in adequate amounts, resulting in widespread deficiencies... The WORST forms of magnesium Magnesium oxide
-- Magnesium oxide is the most common form of magnesium sold in pharmacies, but it is non-chelated and possesses a poor absorption rate compared to those listed above.
Magnesium sulfate -- Magnesium sulfate, also called Epsom salt, is a fantastic constipation aid but an unsafe source of dietary magnesium, since overdosing on it is easy.
Magnesium glutamate and aspartate -- Avoid these two forms of
magnesium completely. Glutamic acid and aspartic acid are components of the dangerous artificial sweetener aspartame, and both of them become neurotoxic when unbound to other amino acids.

Five Natural Antibiotics That Fight Illness and Promote Health
T
here are many herbs and foods that can treat and prevent a wide variety of illnesses and diseases.
Many people are beginning to use natural antibiotics and remedies for these illnesses rather than relying on traditional Western medicine with risks and side effects. Natural antibiotics can be powerful treatments for illnesses, preventing disease and keeping the body’s health in balance. Natural antibiotics, such as honey, ginger and Echinacea, among others, are powerful remedies to a wide variety of illnesses and diseases.
Local Honey
Honey has natural antibiotic properties. Spreading it on wounds and burns can fight infection and promote faster healing. Using locally sourced honey can also combat seasonal or environmental allergies. Since bees use local pollen to make their honey, people with pollen allergies can find relief by consuming local honey. As a natural sweetener, adding honey to tea is an excellent way to get its health benefits.
Garlic
Garlic is an herb used commonly in cooking, but it can also be used as a remedy to fight off infections and diseases such as ear aches, colds, flus, and pneumonia. The herb can help boost the immune system and reduce risk of heart disease, and it contains lots of vitamin C, which is beneficial to people’s health. Because it is used so widely in cooking, garlic is readily available for anyone who needs it.
Ginger
Ginger is used in more than half of traditional Chinese herbal medicines. In addition to the power that it has to heal diseases and illnesses, ginger is well known for its ability to calm upset stomachs, and can be quite comforting when brewed as a tea. It is also used frequently in cooking.
Echinacea
Echinacea is often used to treat wounds and bacterial infections. Not only can it help prevent illness by boosting the immune system, but it can shorten the symptoms of illnesses. Applying Echinacea topically can disinfect and treat eczema and psoriasis. It is also an excellent natural remedy for sunburns.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a necessary vitamin for a healthy body. However, it can also be used to combat bacterial infections and many illnesses. Taking vitamin C at the beginning of a cold can help the body heal much quicker, or can prevent getting a cold in the first place. As more and more people look for safer, natural alternatives to chemical-based medications and treatments for illnesses and diseases, natural antibiotics and remedies are becoming more popular and accessible. These treatments not only combat common illnesses people face frequently but can help boost the immune system to prevent future illnesses.

GREAT REASONS TO MAKE IT YOUR GO-TO TREAT
"From personal experience, I am more than convinced that dark chocolate is a great tool for taming an out-of-control sweet tooth. …"
Dark chocolate is truly a treat you can indulge in without the guilt. In fact, dark chocolate is one of the best reminders that healthy eating can taste great too. Here are five winning reasons to come over to the dark side and enjoy. 1. Dark chocolate is a highly concentrated source of exceedingly potent antioxidants called flavanols and ranks as one of the most potent of all antioxidant foods. 2. As treats go, dark chocolate is a surprisingly good source of fiber. In fact, if you choose the right dark chocolate, for every gram of sugar in your “healthy” dark chocolate indulgence, you can get a gram of fiber! This is fantastic because fiber can mitigate the toxic effects of sugar in the body. (Dark chocolate is also a good source of zinc and magnesium.) 3. Dark chocolate is the only food that has been shown to acutely boost mood and concentration. 4. In many published studies dark chocolate has exhibited several hearthealthy benefits including reducing blood pressure, increasing HDL (good) cholesterol and improving blood vessel function. 5. Even though it is delectable, dark chocolate is low in sugar. If you eat my prescribed dose, you will only get about 1/2 of a teaspoon of sugar! That barely makes a dent in your daily limit for added sweeteners (which is up to 9 teaspoons a day for men and up to 6 teaspoons a day for women). Here is my advice for best results when choosing dark chocolate: • Choose the highest percentage cacao that your palate will accept. The higher the cacao, the more antioxidants and fiber it will have and usually the less sugar. Strive for at least 70% cacao, but start wherever you need to begin the habit. Over time, you will see that you can push up the cacao percentage. I love 86 to 90% now, but started at 60% initially. • Remember, limit your indulgence up to one ounce daily. One to two squares or no more than one-quarter of the standard large dark chocolate bar is a prudent portion. • Experiment with different brands to find the dark chocolate that you enjoy the most. You can also look for brands on special and stock up for the best value. My personal favorite is the Ghiradelli 86% Midnight Reverie brand. "From personal experience, I am more than convinced that dark chocolate is a great tool for taming an out-of-control sweet tooth. It is fantastic for “resensitizing” your taste buds to sweetness so that slightly sweet foods will taste plenty sweet, while sweet or very sweet foods will taste repulsive. Try it for yourself!"

Back From The Brink
In Loving Memory of a Great Comedian. Thank you Robin for the laughs, you will be missed
Robin Williams 1951 ~ 2014
By Graeme Cowan
How to Talk to a Depressed Person To one degree or another, most of us are mourning the loss of Robin Williams. His appeal was incredibly far-reaching and almost all of us count one or two (or more) of his movies among our favorites. However, for some people, this tragedy won’t just result in a passing sense of sadness—celebrity suicides can promote feelings of deep despair in those who are already vulnerable. Actually, one of two things can happen, All the attention around depression, mental illness, and suicide can lead at-risk people to finally seek help. Or two—and this is the dangerous part—it can cause them to lose hope and give up. People think, “If someone like Robin Williams, with all his money, success, and fame, can’t beat depression, how will I ever be able to?” It’s easy to see why they might decide there’s no point in fighting anymore. I felt that way myself at one time—but now I am 100% certain we can all come back from the black hole. Depression and other mental illnesses are as widespread as they are misunderstood and stigmatized. In fact, according to the International Bipolar Foundation, one in four people have a mental illness and 800,000 people commit suicide each year. When someone you know seems to be struggling, how should you handle it? If you’re like many people, you may hesitate to cross boundaries or get involved—however, the worst thing you can do is say nothing. It is incredibly important the distressed person in your life knows there is hope. Your silence may suggest there is not. It may feel uncomfortable, but it is an act of love and friendship to ask, ‘Are you okay?’ Here’s how. Break the ice. Be careful how you approach this (very) touchy subject. It’s better to ease into the conversation, making it feel like a natural transition. In my own depression, I experienced black thoughts, pitiful energy levels, and a complete loss of confidence. My mind couldn’t grasp information, and I feared my intelligence was lost. If you suspect your loved one is suffering from depression, he’s very likely suffering similar symptoms that will make it difficult to articulate the way he feels.
Breaking the ice and starting this important conversation is a great way to lend him the helping hand that could pull him out of his darkness. Ease into the conversation. Discuss weather, sports, family, etc. in a private place—walking outside is ideal. Make an observation about a change in behavior you have observed. For example, you could say, ‘I’m concerned about you waking up at 4 a.m. and not being able to get back to sleep.’ Let her know you’re genuinely worried about her and want to do whatever you can to help. And reaffirm it’s okay for her to need help. Listen without judgment. It’s hard enough for many people, particularly men, to talk about their problems and emotions without feeling the weight of judgment. Seek to understand the full issue; be specific. You might ask, ‘What are the things that are causing you to lose sleep?’ ‘Why does that worry you so much?’ ‘What do you think can be done about it?’ ‘Have you considered asking someone else for help/ advice?’ If he is struggling to come up with answers, then this might be the time to suggest strategies or someone else he could talk to. If he is able to provide answers, be careful how you respond. Never try to minimize what he’s feeling. Be sensitive. Some people find it hard to talk about emotions and feelings of doubt and inadequacy. Often, it is best to talk about behavior rather than threaten self-esteem. I remember my wife being totally perplexed and wondering why I had not discussed my absolute despair with her prior to making an attempt on my life. She had no idea how low I felt, because I kept it from her. I didn’t ask for help out of shame, fear, and feelings of hopelessness. Try multiple choice. Most people like choices, and when it comes to labeling an emotion, it’s no different. We are often more likely to discuss their thoughts and feelings when we don’t have to describe them. People who are depressed yearn for a sustained improvement in mood. Every time I visited my psychiatrist, he inevitably asked me to rate my mood from 0 to 10, which actually led me to create my own moodometer. I found
giving these ratings to be a very valuable resource for tracking my moods and progress. If someone is having difficulty discussing feelings, she may respond better to giving this type of rating or even multiple choice. For example, ‘Are you feeling worried, sad, or angry right now?’ Give hope. Emotional support and reassurance is the only way to approach such a delicate situation. You could say, ‘Remember how well you handled X? We couldn’t have gotten through that without you’. Or, ‘You are such an important part of our family. Without you, we wouldn’t be the same.’ You might also share stories of people who’ve also struggled with depression. When I was chronically depressed, I yearned for stories of people who had been through something similar and had come out on the other side. I longed for a glimpse of optimism that could come only from fellow travelers—people who had been where I was. Encourage action (but don’t overdo it). Many depressed people are so hopeless they feel there isn’t a single thing out there that can help them feel better. Their depression has so skewed their outlook that they simply think there is nowhere to turn. In my research talking with people who’ve suffered from depression, I’ve found their greatest regret is not seeking expert help or diagnosis earlier. This is where loved ones can play a vital role. Offer to make an appointment for them (and accompany them if they are willing). If they strongly resist going to
the doctor, you could suggest they do an anonymous online depression test. Resources: www.ruokday.com National Suicide Prevention Lifeline www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance www.dbsalliance.org Families for Depression Awareness www.familyaware.org There are many other online resources. Remember, nothing will happen until someone makes a move. Follow up. Check in a few days later to see if he has scheduled an appointment. If he hasn’t, mention the idea again and gently remind him how important it is to take care of himself. If he has gone to the doctor for a check-up, encourage him to go ahead and schedule his next appointment so you can have it on the calendar. In the future I hope we’ll see that Robin Williams’ death opened the door for a dialogue about depression. Perhaps that can be his final gift to us. Myth #9 Low-Fat Foods Prevent Obesity and Heart Disease Conventional recommendations over the past 40 years or more have called for drastically decreasing the overall fat in your diet, but this fat aversion is a driving force behind today’s metabolic dysfunction, obesity, and ill health. As discussed earlier, most people need between 50-85% of their calories from fats—a far cry form the less than 10% from saturated fat recommended by the USDA! Kris Gunnars stated it quite nicely.

Dr. Joseph Mercola
“The first dietary guidelines for Americans were published in the year 1977, almost at the exact same time the obesity epidemic started. Of course, this doesn’t prove anything (correlation does not equal causation), but it makes sense that this could be more than just a mere coincidence. The anti-fat message essentially put the blame on saturated fat and cholesterol (harmless), while giving sugar and refined carbs (very unhealthy) a free pass. Since the guidelines were published, many massive studies have been conducted on the low-fat diet. It is no better at preventing heart disease, obesity or cancer than the standard Western diet, which is as unhealthy as a diet can get.” Let’s face it, if low-fat diets worked, the United States would be the healthiest nation on the planet—folks have been following them since the late 1970s! However, America’s waistline has done nothing but expand since then. There’s no telling how many people have been prematurely killed by following these flawed guidelines. Yet, despite mounting research to the contrary, low-fat diets are still being pushed as “heart healthy” by the majority of nutritionists, cardiologists, and the like. Myth #10 Carbs Should Be Your Biggest Source of Calories I have already covered how insulin resistance is a key factor in disease (see Myth #4). A diet high in non-fiber carbohydrates—particularly processed grains and sugar—leads directly to insulin and leptin resistance. When your highest percentage of calories comes from healthful fats, these problems just don’t exist. Most high-carb diets are high in sugar and starch, not vegetables. When the low-fat mantra swept over the country, the high-carb craze soon followed. When fat was removed from foods, something had to be added back to make foods more palatable—and that something was sugar. Particularly, highly concentrated forms of fructose, such as high fructose corn syrup, which spell metabolic disaster for your body. With fat being the identified villain (albeit falsely accused), sugar was completely ignored—even though sugar was the real culprit behind inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, diabetes, and heart disease. America’s love of sugar was a boon to the processed food industry—which added fructose to practically everything from soup to nuts…literally. If you want to see what effects this had on the country’s health and belt size, just turn on your national news. A high-carb diet disrupts your insulin and leptin signaling, and over time may very well result in type 2 diabetes. By contrast, a diet higher in beneficial fats corrects these metabolic issues. Recent research has demonstrated that the ketogenic diet—one marked by carbohydrate restriction and substantial healthful fats—extended the lifespan of mice by 20%, because it optimized their insulin sensitivity and other metabolic processes. There is evidence that low carbohydrate diets, combined with appropriate amounts of protein, can even slow down Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. Now for the #1 Truth… The more you can eat like your ancestors, the better—fresh whole foods, locally and sustainably raised, and foods that are minimally processed or not processed at all. These are the types of foods that your genes and biochemistry are adapted to and will provide you with the ability to reverse and prevent most diseases. You will find these at your local farmer’s market, food co-op, or in your own backyard garden. And you will be amazed at the positive changes you’ll see in your health when you “clean up” your diet! Be wary of nutritional advice from mainstream “experts” as it may not be based on science—or based on bad information that is several decades outdated. Truthful, accurate information is your number one weapon in taking control of your health.

Health Lights By Dr. Judith Orloff Excerpted from Positive Energy
The Missing Piece For Overeating As a psychiatrist I know there is more to overeating and obesity than meets the eye. One big reason many diets fail is that traditional weight loss programs don’t factor in how we process subtle energy, what Chinese medicine terms life force or chi. Subtle energy penetrates and surrounds the body. Sensitive people, who I call intuitive empaths, unknowingly overeat in response to being overwhelmed by negative vibes. Empaths not only can sense energy around them, they absorb it into their bodies. Energetic premise of obesity: When empaths are thin they have less padding and are more vulnerable to soaking up negative vibes. For instance, early twentieth century faith healers were renowned for being grossly obese to avoid absorbing their patient’s symptoms, a common trap I’ve seen modern-day healers also unconsciously fall into; food is a convenient grounding device. Similarly, many of my patients pack on pounds to protect against overwhelming vibes, massive or minute. Energy is at the root of an empaths hunger. Whether sensitivity to negative vibes is minimal or intense, for a diet to succeed it’s important to develop alternative coping strategies other than overeating. Eight Emergency Interventions to Halt Energetic Eating When the impulse to overeat hits: Identify an Addictive Craving from a True Need Addictive craving, a symptom of nutritional abuse, is a frequent response to energetic overload. Bottom line, you eat certain foods like a drug addict; this leads to obesity. Cravings feel intense: whenever you keep lusting after sweets and carbs especially, be suspicious. (I’ve yet to see someone binge on brussel sprouts!) For instance, chocolate turns from simple pleasure to a crutch when you gorge on it, use it to self-medicate stress, or to get a sugar high; also, if you experience mood-swings, sugar hangovers, can’t control your intake, or it makes you sick. With cravings, you eat to relieve stress, not to build energy. Try to identify addictive foods, and limit them. A true nutritional need lacks such sturm and drang (traditional emotion or stress): there’s no lusting or lunging for food to guard against negative energies. A true need comes from a centered place, has nothing to do with soothing our emotions (comfort foods) or obsession. Feeling healthily nurtured from food never involves mood swings, sedation or elation…rather an even feeling of satisfaction. A true need lets you enjoy your meal, optimizes energy, and doesn’t lead to obesity. Quickly Pinpoint Energetic Stressors That Trigger Addictive Cravings Immediately ask yourself: Have I been exposed to bad vibes? A loud-mouth neighbor? An ordeal to pass through airport security? A siege of overbearing phone messages? Don’t write off the “smaller” incidents which notoriously send empaths motoring to the refrigerator. Avoid panic. Methodically pinpoint cause and effect. You don’t have to be victimized by negative energy. The trick is to clear it as soon as possible once you’ve been slimed. Breathe Negative Vibes Out of Your System Take a five minute break for damage control. Slowly inhale and exhale. As you’ve learned, breath activates positive energy; it also releases negative vibes. Notice if they get stuck in a specific part of your body. For instance, negative vibes go straight to my gut; I feel irradiated by a toxic stun gun. Identify your vulnerable points. Then practice this visualization: Just as your lungs take in oxygen and expel toxic carbon dioxide, you’re going to breathe in light and clarity, breathe
out stress. Breathe in vitality. Breathe out fear. I also visualize negative vibes exiting through the spaces between the vertebrae in my lower back. Try this too. Breathing out toxic vibes is a proactive cleansing process. You’re in charge of the flow. Allow well-being to permeate every inch of you. Repeat this exercise until you’re free of negative residue. Pray to Release the Addictive Craving If you’re gripped by a craving, go into praying-mode. For a few quiet moments breathe slowly. Bring your awareness to your heart, and aim for self-compassion. The craving may feel impossible to handle, but that’s okay. In this calm state ask your higher power to lift it from you. No mental nudging needed. If you surrender your ego-involvement, this simple heartfelt request works like a charm. What you’re doing is calling on a cosmically influential positive energy to supplant a material-world negative drive. Take A Bath Or Shower A speedy way to dissolve negative vibes is to immerse yourself in water. My tub is my refuge after a busy day: it washes away everything from bus exhaust to long hours of air travel, to personal unpleasantness. While you relax, water works on you. It has alchemical cleansing properties which will purify the physical body and energy field. Burn Sage Just because vibes are invisible doesn’t mean you don’t eat over them. Try burning sage to counteract negative energy someone deposits in your office or home…a strategy that has kept pounds off my patients. Vibes accumulate and can cause stress if not eradicated. You may not realize that left-over subtle energies trigger addictive eating patterns, but these vibes subliminally wear at you. Sage has been used by ancients cross-culturally to purify locations. Burn it, and the desire to eat over lurking negative vibes will wane. Visualize a Protective Shield Around You Visualize white light surrounding every inch of you from head to toe so negative energy cannot penetrate this shield and deplete your energy. Eat with Attunement Develop a diet that satisfies your energetic needs. I’d like energy to motivate why we eat, more important than taste or any dietary dogma…a priority to impart to children. Whatever you put in your mouth, run by your energy meter; see what truly nourishes or depletes. Even foods you’ve shunned become more attractive when you experience their energy lift. Food is no place to be passive. You don’t have to let poisonous energy lodge itself in you. To stay on top of your eating, do a daily check-in. Stay alert for cravings prompted by negative vibes. Watch your responses. I promise, eating habits will change. Have your business seen by thousands.
DON'T QUIT When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don’t you quit. Life is bizarre with its twists and turns, As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don’t give up though the pace seems slow, You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than it seems To a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the victor’s cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out, The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems far; So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit It’s when things seem worse that you mustn’t quit. Awakened Oracle Astrology
The Autumnal Equinox is September 22 at 7:29pm PDT. The equinox this year brings the message of hope. This summer was a difficult season of change. Change is not easy, and right now, change means we have to find new models for harmony in our relationships. The equinox contains one such blueprint for how to find that new model. The benefit of being polarized to something is that it helps us clarify what we believe in because we realize we are willing to fight for it. Even if that belief is that everyone should get along and there should not be any wars, we are still polarizing to the opposite thought. The equinox message is that we must relax the tension from being polarized. Then, and only then, can higher awareness of a path forward flow through us. However, it takes faith; in higher forces and in our selves, to release what we hoped would be the outcome and allow a completely new truth emerge as a solution. There is always a solution. Our hope is warranted. Be at peace this Fall. Astrology uses the placement of all planets at the moment of your birth to determine the “Matrix” of energy you are working through this lifetime. The sign determines the process of connecting with that aspect of you. For instance, the Sun may be in Libra at birth, but Libra does not define “Who you Are”, it determines the process by which you will connect with “Who you Are”. Energy for September 2014 Strength: Our strength is Prosperty. Open your eyes to the bounty that is all around you. The door to abundance is gratitude. Challenge: Our challenge is Hidden Talents. The Universe has given you a multitude of talents to serve humanity. Accept. Totem Energy: Our totem is Whale. Dive deep and draw upon your soul history and deepest memories for strength and direction. Crystal Ally: Our theme is Tourmaline-Inner Peace. Disengage from any thoughts of the past or future and connect with the inner peace of here and now. Moon Cycles Full Harvest Moon: September 8, 6:38pm PDT - 16° Pisces. Full Moon Message: Allow inspiration to flow through you. New Moon: September 23, 11:13pm PDT- 1° Librao. New Moon Message: The past is the foundation for the future.
ARIES • Mar. 21 to Apr. 19
Totem: Hummingbird (Joy, Music). In some ways, the pressure is off. In the past few months there was an unrelenting drive to move forward and now you are enjoying some sweet relief. Lighten up in any way possible this month. It is vital to restore any joy that is missing from your life. Dance, laugh, and play to recharge your batteries for the next phase. You will be back in motion very soon.
TAURUS • Apr. 20 to May 20
Totem: Bear (Wisdom, Dreams). Saturn has been transiting Scorpio, which is opposite your sun sign. This is a long cycle of deepening your awareness of yourself. This month Bear is reminding you that you already possess great strength and wisdom and there is no need to seek either of these outside of yourself. Trust your inner voice and speak your dreams out loud. It may be time to make some changes and follow them.
GEMINI • May 21 to June 20
Totem: Moose (Authority, Self-Respect). Moose is an indicator that time has come to take pride in your achievements and reassert your self-respect. Social Gemini, it is very easy for you to go along to get along. On occasion, however, you must reestablish your own health boundaries. Be sure you receive recognition for your contributions to any group endeavors this month. And make sure that your inner authority is your only guiding compass.
Cancer ~ June 21 to July 22
Totem: Cougar (Leadership, Family). Cougar is a powerful totem for leadership, especially mentorship of the young. This is a good time to review your relationship to your family. Are you teaching what you are learning? Your experience is also your wisdom, even if it is painful. Bring your insight to those who are not as far down the road as you and you will find that all your experience can benefit others.
Leo ~ July 23 to Aug. 22
Totem: Eagle (Fearlessness, Vision). Venus and Jupiter are both transiting your sign. The combination brings love and expansion. This is a rare combination so enjoy these next few months. Eagle’s message is to direct your thoughts to a higher plane. See yourself from a broader perspective this month. Review your dreams and visions and set a trajectory for the next year from this perspective. You are more than even you had imagined.
Virgo ~ Aug. 23 to Sept 22
perspective change.
Totem: Dragonfly (Mystery, Illusion). It is time to see the Magic of being you. Be open to the mystery and to change. Dragonfly has come to ensure that you do not become too rigid. Maybe you are afraid to let go and become who you are rather than what it has been safe to be? Venus transits your sign this month. Her loving support will help with this
Introducing Virgo August 23nd to September 22nd “I ANALYZE”
Ruling Planet: Chiron-Mercury ~ Rules: Heart & Blood ~ Symbol: The Virgin ~ Element: Earth ~ Energy: Feminine ~ Quality: Mutable ~ Gems: Sapphire & Carnelian ~ Flower: Rose ~ Color: Navy Blue ~ Most Compatible Signs: Taurus, Capricorn & Pisces ~ Higher Octave of Virgo Energy: Meditative awareness allows us to experience everything around us, including our bodies, as the results of our creative process. ~ Lower Octave of Virgo Energy: We become transfixed with a need for external perfection that drives us into rigidity with ourselves and others. ~ Full Spectrum of the Virgo/Pisces Axis: We perfect our awareness of the material world as a perfect feedback device for the expression of our spirit.
V
irgo is committed to organic perfection. This is where we master the Law of Attraction. Virgo is often perceived as nitpicky or critical. It’s because anything that feels out of alignment with its highest possible form is driving her mad. She naturally understands that if there is a flaw in her environment, it is an expression of some flaw inside of her. There is no criticism leveled by a Virgo that can compare to the self-criticism that is her constant inner dialogue. However, this focus on perfection and the minutia of life produces tremendous results. Virgo is here to serve. This process is designed to benefit everyone that she touches and so it does. Wherever we have this energy in our charts we are able to embrace true humility. She is the Virgin, married only to God. And in the end, anything that this beautiful virgin produces will be of the highest possible quality. For she has the patience to work for a lifetime to produce only what is organically perfect. BrynMorgaine is a psychic, writer and astrologer specializing in Personal and Planetary Actualization. She is the founder of the Awakened Oracle Metaphysical Institute and the creator of Polarity Creation Therapy. She can be reached at 360-436-6287 or Bryn@AwakenedOracle.com.
Libra ~ Sept. 23 to Oct. 22
Totem: Badger (Tenacity, Healing). Badger brings a message about assertiveness and healing. Tenacity is the strength to asset yourself and to push ahead when the time is right. For Libra, healing comes from restoring balance. You may be in need of healing some imbalance in your own life or you may be asked to provide this healing for others. Either way, Badger is a totem of strength and clarity for this endeavor.
Scorpio ~ Oct. 23 to Nov. 21
Totem: Butterfly (Sensitivity, Positivity). Butterfly is a totem of transformation, however with Butterfly we transform by becoming lighter and more sensitive. If you feel that you are still a caterpillar, have faith, the change is underway. You will emerge as a beautiful butterfly very soon. Stay positive and do not harden in your transformational process. All of life is beneficent. And it is by entering the dark that we are able to define the light.
Sagittarius ~ Nov. 22 to Dec. 21
Totem: Ant (Loyalty, Duty). Mars will move into your sign early this month which will heighten your awareness of your basic needs and health. Big visions and expansive concepts need careful attention to detail to manifest. Part of that detail is your own physical well-being. Ant’s message is to focus on the basics right now. Stay grounded and let Mars do his work; to focus your attention to your own health and personal boundaries.
Capricorn ~ Dec. 22 to Jan. 19
Totem: Raven (Magic, Other Realms). Raven heralds a time of increased synchronicity and magic and opens the door to other realms. If you have lost touch with the expanded view of life ask Raven to restore your vision. We are all more than we can see with our physical eyes. The Universe has much in store for you so be open to seeing a new vision of yourself and your future. Expect the unexpected.
Aquarius ~ Jan. 20 to Feb. 18
Totem: Dolphin (Awareness, Harmony). You have an increased awareness now. Maybe the past few months have tested your patience or clouded your vision. The clouds have now cleared and you can feel both the power of forces greater than yourself moving through you as well as a harmony with the people around you. This is a special time. Dolphin’s message is that the easiest way to retain this balance is to have fun. So enjoy!
Pisces ~ Feb. 19 to March 20
Totem: Beaver (Flexibility, Creativity). It is time to review the structures in your life. Do they support you or have they become restrictive? Beaver’s message is that flexibility and creativity are called for now. You are naturally sensitive to fighting the river; however, you are never comfortable with rocking the boat. Be flexible yet determined and create new, more supportive structures and environments. With Beaver’s industriousness you will succeed.

For over 3,000 years, oriental medicine has been an effective system of healthcare for naturally treating acute conditions and as a preventive strategy. A qualified practitioner can detect a pattern of disease long before the symptoms manifest by asking the right questions, physical examination, observation of the tongue and pulse diagnosis. If you are taking prescription drugs and tired of the disturbing side effects while just masking your illness symptoms, call and learn how the natural approach of acupuncture and herbs can help prevent and treat your current condition(s).
