No More Excuses
The other day someone asked me about my New Year’s resolution and if I had made any. When I was younger, I would have answered in the affirmative; however, that is not the case today. Making resolutions of what we wish to accomplish is still an excellent idea. It gives us a focus to evolve and better ourselves as we move forward into a new era. Most people are excited at the prospect of entering the next year. They’re tired of unfulfilled dreams and the dramas experienced. With January comes the hope of a better and brighter future. If you’re like most of us, our intentions are most honorable as we make a life plan to accomplish great changes. Why is it we have such high aspirations only to fall short of our goals? Are the goals we create more difficult to realize? How much effort are we willing to put into ourselves and reap the rewards of a job well done. At what point do we lose interest in the discipline needed to fulfill the ideal resolution? When did the commitment stop being exciting and it became a chore to do? When did we stop believing in our birthright for good? When did we stop fighting for ourselves, our dreams and desires?

I for one, have many excuses…I’m too tired to go exercise or to cook…I’ll do it tomorrow. Of course, tomorrow never arrives. Dr. Wayne Dyer wrote a book called, “Excuses No More” and just the title alone says volumes. If we were honest with ourselves there would be no more excuses. We would be able to come from a place of the heart because there would be a respect and love for our very being. We wouldn’t have to hide behind untruths such as excuses as to why we don’t follow through or complete the commitments we made to ourselves. Perhaps it is time to be precise in our goals i.e. a time frame, a step-by-step journey, being held accountable and above all else, to have fun with your resolutions. They are the crux of change; all of which we deserve. So make your promises to yourself and take baby steps to realize the goals you have set. For me, lets work on “excuses no more”. Happy 2014. May all your dreams and aspiration find fulfillment in a world of unlimited possibilities. Many blessings my friends, In Love & Light,

Twigs & Shout When Christopher Columbus and his crew were sailing their long and arduous voyage to a world they had heard about but never seen, the sailors grew discouraged. Eventually the faith-tested entourage began to wonder if they would ever find land. Then one day the scout in the crow’s nest excitedly shouted, “Twigs!” The crew ran to the rail and observed scattered debris of small twigs and leaves floating past the bow. An impassioned howl rose from the deck—land was not far away.
Disasters and opportunities are not necessarily logistical facts. They are interpretations. Psychologists have determined that your subconscious mind, the matrix of beliefs that creates your experience, cannot distinguish between imagination and reality. When you imagine something to be so, your body, mind, and emotions kick into gear and create the experience of it being so. Imaginations of failure lead to the experience of failure. Imaginations of success lead to the experience of success.
As you and I enter the new year, we, too, find ourselves on a journey over a vast uncharted sea. Will we ever reach the prosperity, rewarding relationships, health, clarity, and inner peace we have been promised? Can I have a job that fulfills my soul and provides me with a substantial income? Can I meet someone who truly matches me? Can I find harmony with my current partner? Is there a place on the planet that feels like home? Will my body work as well as I would like it to? Can I be happy?
That’s why it’s important to notice twigs and celebrate them. The ratio of big ocean to small twigs is gargantuan, but it’s what the twigs represent that makes them more powerful than the expanse that outweighs them in size but not meaning. “Faith,” said Rabindranath Tagore, “is the bird that sings when the dawn is still dark.” When you hear the bird singing, no matter what the environment currently indicates, you can be sure the sun is not far behind.
While you may have not yet planted your flag on terra firma, signs will show up that let you know you are getting close. You may make a business deal that is not your ultimate goal, but offers a taste of how you would like it to be. You may feel physically well for a period of time, and although the sensation is not permanent—for now—you realize you can feel good. You visit a place that resonates with your spirit, and you find comfort knowing that such a locale exists and you may one day claim it or one like it as your home.
If something can be done, it will be done. This is why “Kitty Hawk moments” are so significant. When the Wright Brothers flew their first flight in a heavierthan-air craft at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the flight’s duration was only twelve seconds. But what those twelve seconds meant was far more important than the flight itself. They meant that air flight was real and possible. Those twelve seconds were the portal to a new era in human history, leading only 66 years later to a man walking on the moon. That twig was a sign of a vast new territory not very far down the road.
Or you meet someone who could be a great partner, but that person turns out to not be available or has a deal-breaking flaw. Disappointed again, you may be tempted to complain that you were teased or let down by the universe. But it’s the other way around: the universe is letting you know that what you want is possible, and you can feel the way you want to feel with someone right for you. That person was not the person, but he or she was a representation of the energy and experience you value and intend to manifest. If one such person exists, there must be others. Don’t curse the experience because it did not become permanent. Bless it as a sign that the real thing is not far behind. In the early 1900’s a shoe company dispatched a salesman to Africa to open up that market. A month later he sent a telegram to the home office: “Disaster! Disaster! These people do not wear shoes. Bring me home immediately!” The following month a salesman from another shoe company was sent to Africa with the same assignment. He, too, soon sent a telegram home: “Opportunity! Opportunity! These people do not wear shoes. Triple production immediately!”
You can hasten your arrival in the new world, symbolized by this new year, by being keen to observe the twigs that float past your bow. Celebrate and magnify them. Seize every sign that your good is on its way—actually already here—and let success be the theme of your exploration and expression. Columbus and his crew were powered by stories and visions of a life they had never known, and they found it. You, too, have heard about dimensions that transcend the ones you have known, and you, too, will step into them. That’s what makes the new year new.

By Annette M. Rizzolo, Msc.D CRYSTALS & GEMSTONES
Working with
rystals & Gemstones
We can naturally BALANCE and ENERGIZE ourselves thru the use of crystals …
can naturally Balance and Energize ourselves through the use of crystals, other minerals in crystalline form, and gemstones. Each stone has specific attributes and qualities which, if used properly, can restore health to an imbalanced area. One of the primary ways in which crystals help humanity is in the art of healing. In traditional crystal healings, the crystal is placed on or held above the area to be healed. Then it is programmed to heal that specific issue. There are various ways to clear, charge and program crystals. We’ll discuss that in a moment. The base of a crystal held over an afflicted area will draw out harmful energies, while the terminated end pointed at the afflicted area will send in positive healing energies. Passing a crystal through the aura approximately 4-6 inches away from the physical body helps clear blockages, thus restoring balance to the physical body by correcting imbalances on the auric plane. Remember, crystals and stones should always be used positively for the highest and best good for all. Crystals amplify the energies they are given. So, keep your crystals in an atmosphere of peace and love, and these energies will amplify and return to you. Clearing, Charging & Programming Crystals Since crystals and stones have an energy of their own, a charge if you will, they can pick up energies from outside sources, and pass those energies into you! It’s important you clear, charge, and program your own crystals. Always cleanse newly received crystals, or crystals someone else has touched. They can accumulate negative particles of energy that can be transferred to you or someone else. Just as a lint brush pulls lint off of your clothes, a crystal can pull non-harmonious particles from your energy body…your aura. Just pass a previously cleared crystal through your energy body (aura). It will help clear and balance your energy! Then make sure you clear your crystal again! Anytime you use crystals to clear your own or someone else’s aura, or when you use a crystal or stone for healing purposes, it’s very important to clear this powerful tool
Clearing keeps from passing other’s problems onto yourself or someone else. before further use. Clearing keeps from passing other’s problems onto yourself or someone else. So, every so often you might want to clear the crystal’s energy field and charge it with new, fresh energy. When you charge a crystal, you deliberately place or replace, in the crystal, a pure or impartial health-giving vibration, such as the energy of the sun, the ocean or the moon. METHODS OF CLEARING CRYSTALS & GEMSTONES All these methods work well. You choose what’s best for you. CLEANSING IN WARM WATER: Cleanse the crystal in warm water with mild soap and a sponge or soft brush (an old toothbrush works well). There is no substitute for a good physical cleaning to make your crystal sparkle! COOL TAP WATER: After following method 1, or as a separate clearing, run cool tap water over the stone for at least thirty seconds. This rush of cold water seems to clear and charge the stone. NATURALLY RUNNING WATER: It would be ideal to place the stone in a running stream or the ocean for cleaning. If you are able to clear the crystal by this method, place it in a fabric bag or a mesh basket and tie it to something stable. Let the stone sit in the rushing water for as long as you like. SEA SALT SOLUTION: Make a strong solution of sea salt and cold water in a glass or ceramic container. Do NOT use metal. Soak your crystal anywhere from a few hours to overnight. When you remove it, rinse it in cool tap water for a few seconds. (Do not use this method if your crystal is set in metal) DIRECT SUNLIGHT: Setting your crystals & stones out in direct sunlight will clear and charge them at the same time. Place the crystals & stones on a clean white surface in the sunlight. If you can’t leave your stones outside, it works fine to put the stones in a window. Sunlight charges crystals and stones with Solar energy. By placing cleared crystals and stones in the moonlight, you charge them with Lunar energy. This balances the energy of your stones! Some stones can bleach out in too much sunlight, so you may want to limit the amount of exposure for colored stones.
PAGE 6 • january, 2014 • IN LIGHT TIMES
CLEARING WITH INTENT: Clearing crystals with intention is effective and requires a minimum of paraphernalia. Hold the crystal in your giving, or sending hand (right for righties, left for lefties). Now, just mentally WILL your crystal to be clean. Allow your thought pattern to override any other pattern the crystal may be holding. Breathe deliberately and consciously during this process. With each inhalation, gather strength to your intention, and on the exhalation, blow unwanted energies away THROUGH your hand and out of your crystal.
moon and focus that energy through you into your crystal. You and your crystal will both benefit!
CLEARING WITH SAGE: This method involves burning a sage wand or smudge stick, sometimes blending sage with sweetgrass and cedar, or use sweetgrass alone, and then run your crystal through the smoke. Traditionally, American Indians have always used sage for clearing, cleansing and sending their prayers out into the universe.
To program, hold the crystal in your giving/sending hand. Focus on your intended purpose. Now allow that thought energy, that intent, to flow down your arm and into the crystal. Hold your focus for as long as possible; you may feel heat, itching or tingling from the crystal in your palm. This feeling is normal and signals that your intent has transferred.
CANDLE FLAME: Light a candle (white preferably) and hold your crystal above the flame (without burning yourself) and visualize the candle flame’s energy flowing through the crystal and carrying any negative energy out to be dispersed and negated in the atmosphere.
To re-program, just clear, charge and reprogram!
METHODS OF CHARGING As mentioned before, crystals may b e c h a rg e d b y S U N L I G H T a n d MOONLIGHT or by holding it under cold RUNNING WATER. Another method of charging is with INTENT. Hold your crystal in your giving/ sending hand and let your thought energy flow down your arm and into your crystal. You can stand in the sun or
PROGRAMMING CRYSTALS Once a crystal is cleared and charged you can leave it that way to bring good positive energy to your life, or you may program it for a specific purpose. Crystals can be programmed for protection, to calm, heal, enhance memory as well as a myriad of other purposes.

Put Grit in Your New Year’s Resolutions New Year ’s resolutions are easy to make, but hard to k e e– a s a n y o n e who’s resolved to get in shape, or stop smoking, or vowed to get to work early every day can attest to. The first few days are a breeze: off you jog to the gym, so proud of yourself. You toss your smokes in the trash, yippee! You get to work, a little bleary-eyed, but early enough to get a good head start on your day. All is well. Fast forward to a month later: you’re still on track, sort of. You don’t exactly jog to the gym, but you get there. Most of the time. You’ve bummed a cigarette off a friend a couple of times, but that’s all. You’re getting in early to work once or twice a week. Not too shabby. But by four or five months down the road, forget about it! Your New Year’s resolutions are history…until next January. Yet, you really did mean those resolutions, and you really do want to accomplish those goals. What went wrong? You lacked “grit.” “Grit” is research psychologist Angela Duckworth’s word for what separates those who succeed magnificently in life from those who just do OK. Grit is passion plus perseverance. And according to her research, many talented people do not succeed because, despite their talent, they lack grit. They may have passion, but no perseverance. It seems the ability to just keep going (cue Energizer Bunny) really does make the difference. I remember when I first started dancing, gazing in awe at the accomplished dancers twirling around the floor. I asked my teacher, what makes them so amazing? Is it raw talent? Body shape? A certain dance method? She told me that all of those things mattered, but that what made the difference between a good dancer and a great dancer, was that the great dancer practiced, practiced, and practiced some more, regardless of the day of the week, the dancer’s mood that day, or whatever else might be going on in their lives. They had passion--the love of dance--and perseverance.
So, if you really want your New Year’s resolutions to stick, if you want to see those resolutions through to success, first of all--choose something you are passionate about. Something you can fall in love with. If it’s a healthy body, great, if it’s clean lungs, great, if it’s climbing the corporate ladder, great. It doesn’t matter what is the goal, the “why” of your resolution, what matters is that you absolutely unequivocally, adore that goal. Secondly, just do it. Day in, day out, no excuses. Persevere. Use whatever you need to motivate yourself: I personally love cheesy success posters and recite endless affirmations. Find whatever works for you and use it. I guarantee you will have an exceptional year!

What causes failure? It could be a lack of self-esteem. However, even people with a good, healthy liking for themselves sometimes don’t reach their goals. On the other hand, it could be a disease that’s affecting a lot of us today…a disease known as Tomorrow-itis. You can tell when you are developing a case of Tomorrow-itis by listening to yourself. Check your vocabulary. Have any of these phrases crept in? “I haven’t had a chance to…” “I’ve been too busy…” “As soon as I get these other things done, I’ll…” “I think I’ll rest before I start….” “If only…I’d…” Great composers, artists, poets, writers and songwriters don’t work because they are inspired. They are inspired because they work. You must work at your ambitions every day. Have you noticed that the more you work at something - the more you put into it - the more excited, inspired and “lucky” you become? Things just begin to fall in place. Most successful people feel they are lucky. They are! They are lucky because they know how to turn failures into successes.
There are really only two causes for tomorrow-itis. They are fear of failure and indifference. Fear is usually felt because we are facing an unknown. Once you’ve done something, it is easier the next time. You can become more confident by educating yourself as much as possible about the subject or event. The more you know, the more confident you become. Failure is basically how you look at something. Indifference, on the other hand, is just plain not caring. If you don’t care, don’t do it. Do something else. Statistics show that 94% of the world’s most successful business people are working at something they like to do. Failure is caused by a lack of clearly defined goals. Once you’ve decided what it is that you would really like to do, write it down. Why write it down? Once you’ve written it down, you’ve started to take action on that desire. As you outline exactly what you want and how to get it, you have made a plan. Everyone knows a well-made plan is worth more than a thousand wishes.

You can tell when you are developing a case of Tomorrow-itis by listening to yourself. Check your vocabulary. Have any of these phrases crept in? “I haven’t had a chance to…” “I’ve been too busy…” “As soon as I get these other things done, I’ll…” “I think I’ll rest before I start….” “If only…I’d…”
How do you make a plan? Think about what you want. Write it down in specific terms. This gives you a clear destination. You will know exactly where you are headed. Set up check points for yourself along the way. These we sometimes call “shortrange goals.”
Here’s how you do it. Pick a specific goal, such as a desire you have for your career. Ask yourself, “What do I want from my career?” Write it down in specific terms. “This is exactly what I want.” Then write down what you have to do to get it. Take out a sheet of paper and write across the top: “What I have to do in the next 10 years to attain my goal.” Write down everything you can think of. You can go back and put it in the correct order later. Take out another sheet of paper. Write down: “What I can accomplish in the next five years.” List your thoughts about this. Then take out five more sheets of paper and write the following questions and your answers to each one: “What can I and will I do this year?” “What am I going to do this quarter?” What should I have accomplished by the end of this month?” What am I going to do this week?” “How much can I do today?” Then take action! This produces a pride in yourself as you reach your check

points and a great deal of self-esteem when you arrive at the final destination of this journey. Oh, yes, there will be detours. There always are. They may throw you a little off your route. They may delay your estimated time of arrival, but you must remember that 93% of success in life is based on attitude…only 7% on skill and courage. Failure is 100% guaranteed if you do not try; but failure only means that you have taken an important step toward attaining real success. Do what you can today. Don’t put anything off and you will get rid of tomorrow-itis forever.

Karmic Relationships By Doreen Virtue (excerpt from Assertiveness for Earth Angels)
The relationships that drive you crazy with anger and frustration are from a past life. These are the people who really get under your skin and exasperate you endlessly. Very often, these karmic relationships are with people in your immediate family.
other person’s Source, nor are you the author of his or her life scripts. Karmic relationships are akin to having a tug-of-war. They’re power plays, where one person will pull and the other person will pull back. No one wins in karmic power plays. But when one person drops his or her side of the rope (through the process of forgiving him or herself for getting into this tug-of-war in the first place), the power struggle stops.
Karmic relationships mean that you’ve had prior lifetimes with this person, and you both were sent back to be together to work things out peacefully. This was your soul’s choice, although it was probably highly pushed upon you by your guides and angels who helped you script out much of your life. Usually a karmic relationship is someone with whom you had a battle or other harsh circumstances. You returned together in this lifetime to ensure that you’d work things out, and clear both of your energies. If you don’t clear the energies in this lifetime, you’ll be pressured to continue to incarnate with this soul again and again and again. And each lifetime, his or her relationship to you will continue to be close, either through genetics and familial bonds, or through friendship, marriage, or career. So, that annoying coworker could be your mother or husband next lifetime unless you clear the energy with her in this one. You’re brought together with the other soul so that you can forgive him or her. This doesn’t mean forgiving their actions. It means detoxing your soul by releasing anger toward them. You don’t have to hang out with the person, but you do need to release old pent-up toxic feelings. Holding in old anger is caustic and unhealthful. It’s also a waste of time and energy to blame that person for family dramas and your own upset. Blaming is a projection of our ego, where we don’t own our own shadows and ego issues, and we put them in the basket labeled: “It’s their fault.” And while it may be true that that person is the instigator of traumas, blaming him or her doesn’t help the situation and doesn’t balance the karma between you. Karma and Earth Angels Remember that you can’t control or change any person except yourself. Your spiritual growth as an Earth Angel demands you learn how to be at peace in the presence of annoying and infuriating relationships and circumstances. This is also part of your healing and teaching mission, to be a role model of how to walk through stressful and harsh circumstances with grace and poise. To an assertive Earth Angel, the karmic
Relationships that drive you crazy with anger and frustration are from a past life. relationship is like a final exam. It gives you the opportunity to test out all you’ve been learning through this lifetime and have an impact through all subsequent lifetimes. It’s the equivalent of the hero facing the dragon or the mortal enemy, and using all his or her warrior skills at once. This is the exciting last scene from all action movies, where good triumphs over evil. Sometimes it’s helpful to do past-life work, such as a regression or asking your unconscious mind to give you a dream about your past life with this person. When you remember your past with your karmic-relationship person, it defuses the present-day anger. It helps you step back and detach from the current dramas. You don’t need to share the past-life information with the object of your karmic relationship, unless you feel strongly guided to do so. Talking about these types of issues may bring up even more unnecessary drama. The next step in unraveling the tangled karma between you two is for you to understand this isn’t about the other person; it’s about you and your spiritual growth and future lifetimes. Loving and caring for yourself means making an investment that helps you have more peaceful relationships now and in your future, including your future lifetimes. As annoying as this karmic relationship
is now, it will only become more intense if it’s allowed to continue into the future. You have the power to stop the karmic wheel! Breaking the Karmic Cycle The first step to break this karmic cycle is for you to take responsibility for its presence in your life. Your soul agreed to be with this person because it was necessary for your spiritual progress. So forgiving yourself is the ultimate secret to healing everything in all directions of time.
Of course, dropping the rope and forgiving doesn’t mean you’ll turn into a passive person. Remember, this is about increasing your personal power and assertiveness. In the past, you’ve tried aggressive, passive-aggressive, and passive processes with your karmic relationships. None of these have worked. Now it’s time to be assertive, which means being honest with yourself and others. Honesty means you let go of the agenda of trying to control, fix, or change the other person. Honesty simply means: speaking your truth, and letting the chips fall where they may without attachment to outcome. Avoiding the karmic relationship (staying away from the person) can only work if you can get to a peaceful place inside your mind whenever you think of that individual. Your litmus test of whether you’ve balanced the karma is when you can see something that reminds you of the person and your blood pressure doesn’t go up.
wwwww
This involves forgiving yourself for entering this relationship whenever you did in the distant past lifetime. You probably were given red-flag warnings by your angels then, which you chose to ignore or override. Forgive yourself for ignoring those red flags, and vow to listen from now on. Life lessons only count if we learn from them. Yes, you’re infuriated by how this person behaves. But this is how this individual’s personality works and has always worked. You were the one who decided you could change or fix the person. Now it’s time to let go of that fantasy that this person could be as you desire or dream him or her to be. You’re not the

Enlightening Views By Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
Wisdom from Wayne
Excerpted from Wishes Fulfilled
Loving Starts with Me
You do not need to be anything you are not.
If
you don’t love yourself, nobody else will. Not only that, you won’t be good at loving anyone else. Loving starts with the self
Notice each day whether you are choosing to live in fear or love. Fear can keep you disconnected from the loving presence inside of you. Causing fear is a tactic of the ego, whether it be your own ego or the world’s ego. The world’s ego is a reflection of individual ego power and the amount of fear that is active. Fear is present when we forget that we are a part of God’s divine design. Learning to experience authentic love means abandoning ego’s insistence that you have much to fear and that you are in an unfriendly world. You can make the decision to be free from fear and doubt and return to the brilliant light of love that is always with you. Who you really are is that unclouded love. Here are some ideas for bringing love rather than fear into your life Remind yourself that God created you in perfect love that is changeless and eternal. Your body is changing, as is your mind, so you are not that body or mind. You were created as a spirit that is pure love. That is where you want to keep your attention focused. Forgive yourself and welcome love back into your life. When you can do this, a kind of balancing occurs. Rather than atoning for faults with guilt, you are more committed to promoting joy and service. You will begin to do what you originally came here to do. Notice the acts of kindness other people do rather than their shortcomings. This is how the loving presence views you. We are all good, decent, loving souls who occasionally get lost. When you can focus on the good in another and hold that in your mind, you are acting from your higher self. This can help dissipate fear and anger. Remind yourself of how much you have to give away and of how precious and valuable your giving is. You have the same force running through you that allows the planets to move, the earth to turn, the seeds to sprout, and the flowers to open. There is not a separate God for each person. There is one universal intelligence flowing through all of us.
PAGE 10 • january, 2014 • IN LIGHT TIMES
Accept that you are enough. When ego begins trying to attract you toward fear, say loudly, “I am enough!” You do not need to be anything you are not. You do not need to prove yourself. You do not need to indulge your ego with fears and to keep your real self at a distance. “I am enough” affirms that you choose to love and chase doubts and fears away. Love today and always.

GREAT Vision I don’t do resolutions anymore because they tend not to be tied to a greater purpose. Do you have your New Year’s resolution in place? Or better yet, have you created a New Year’s vision? I don’t do resolutions anymore because they tend not to be tied to a greater purpose. A resolution might be to stop smoking. I remember trying that several times in my 20s and 30s, but I wasn’t successful until I had a greater vision of a healthy heart and vibrant body. Giving up cigarettes came naturally when it was tied to a higher purpose or vision. Vision is a powerful concept, one that calls us to a higher place. When we articulate our vision, it sends a clear message to the Universe that we are open, receptive, and eager to embrace our greatness. The result is the Universe responds through myriad channels—many unforeseen and unknown to us when we first set our vision. I love when that happens. It tells me I’m on the right track, I’m not alone, and I can move forward with confidence that my every need will be met. I say this with assurance because I’ve had the experience several times in my life. And that’s why I’m often a bit of a nag regarding setting a greater vision for your life. How about you? Have you created a New Year’s vision? I’m in the process of refining mine so it is a clear, concrete invitation to the Universe—and an instrument I can use to actively enlist outside support. I originally outlined this vision in 2011. It has been a guide ever since. I see now that 2014 is the time for its demonstration—or at least the initial phases. I know this because the Universe is bringing people to me who have the knowledge and connections to help make this vision a reality. This particular vision centers on providing services for and enriching the community. And that’s all I’m going to say about that particular vision right now. (Yes, I have more than one.) I’m more interested in yours. What greatness in you is clamoring to get out? Is it something you’ve suppressed because of work or family demands, lack of resources, or lack of self-confidence or support? If you had all the resources, knowledge, time, and talent you think are necessary, what would you like to be or do? Why do I think having a vision is so critical? Because I believe we are born to do great things. Therefore, it is important that each of us rise to our highest and best. And as we raise ourselves up, we create an opening for others to also improve their lives. By doing our personal work, we help raise the energy vibration of the world. I hope this makes sense to you. We all know people who simply “make do” or live in victim village. Part of our responsibility as members of the human family is to demonstrate that we can live vibrant, joy-filled, abundant lives. What exactly is a vision? There are many definitions. For now, let’s call vision
Do you have your New Year’s resolution in place? Or, better yet, have you created a New Year’s vision? “creating a powerful mental image produced by your imagination, passion, or joy.” What is it you want to see in your life? Is it loving relationships or a family? Is it a beautiful, nurturing, safe home? Do you take joy from nature and want to live and work in that environment? Is your idea of heaven to live in a home overlooking the ocean? Take a sheet of paper or pull up a blank page on your computer screen. Write two questions. “What am I passionate about?” and “What brings me joy?” Now begin writing everything that comes to mind. Keep writing and writing and writing. When you think you’re done with your lists, put them aside for several hours or a day and come back to them. Have you imaged or thought of something else? Write it down. When you think you have a full, overflowing list, start looking for similarities. Perhaps on your “joy” list are several items related to home, children, travel, or creativity. Circle them. Ask yourself, “What do they have in common?” Give yourself some time to let a vision develop and grow from these nuggets of inspiration. Now write a statement with the heart of your vision. Savor it. Next, write one to two pages describing what your life looks like in 12 months as your vision unfolds and becomes real. Take the time now to begin your list. Yes, now. Don’t just think, “It’s a great idea, I’ll get back to it later.” Take the time now to give your answer the opportunity to emerge. Allow yourself to show up as the incredible person you truly are. Allow the Universe to send you all the resources you need to make your vision a reality.

10 Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe in Cold Weather
By Dr. Karen Becker
Depending on where you live, you’re bracing for another winter of ice, snow and frigid temperatures. I know I am here in the Chicago area. But before we all find our own ways to weather the chill for the next few months, it’s a good time to remember the importance of keeping furry family members as safe, warm and comfortable as we are. Cold weather can be just as hard on pets as it is on humans – especially for dogs and cats left outdoors for extended periods of time (which I never recommend). Pets left outdoors in cold weather can acquire a wide variety of injuries and illness, not the least of which are hypothermia and frostbite. Here are some things you can do to keep the four-legged members of your family warm and safe.
10 Tips to Help Your Pet Weather the Cold This Winter Take your pet for a wellness exam. I recommend twiceyearly veterinary exams for all pets, and especially seniors, so making one of those visits in the fall or early winter is a good way to insure your dog, cat, or other companion is in good shape before the cold weather arrives. Have your furnace inspected. It’s a good idea to have your heating unit checked for carbon monoxide leaks before winter sets in. Carbon monoxide is odorless and invisible, but it can cause serious health problems in both people and pets. Since your dog, cat or other animal companion very likely spends much more time at home than you do during the winter months, she’s more vulnerable to carbon monoxide poisoning. If you use a fireplace or space heater, expect your pet to snuggle up to the warmth. Keep a close watch to insure no part of your pet’s body comes in contact with flames, heating coils or other hot surfaces. Your pet can easily burn herself or knock a heating unit over and put everyone in the house in danger. Keep your pet indoors. I recommend keeping cats inside at all times (unless you have a secure outdoor cat enclosure for use during nice weather, or you take your cat on walks using a harness), but especially during winter. Accompany your dog outdoors when he needs to relieve himself or get some exercise. When you get cold enough to go back inside, chances are your dog is just as cold. If your dog is a large breed, he’ll be able to tolerate cold temps and snow much better than a smaller dog. If your pet has a condition like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or an endocrine disorder, it can compromise his ability to regulate his own body heat. Pets with chronic disease, very young and older animals are more vulnerable to the cold than healthy youngsters and adults. Make sure your dog’s ID tag is current and keep him on leash outdoors. More dogs go missing in the winter months than any other time of year. It’s very easy for your pet to lose his scent and get lost when snow or ice is on the ground, and especially during snowstorms. Snow accumulation can make it impossible for your dog to know if he’s in his front yard or standing out on a street or highway. Light-colored dogs with snow on their fur can quickly blend into the background, making them nearly impossible to spot.
PAGE 12 • january, 2014 • IN LIGHT TIMES
Keep an eye out for outdoor cats. Hopefully you keep your cat inside, but your neighbors may not, or there could be strays or feral cats in the area. Kitties left out in cold temperatures will sometimes crawl up under the hoods of cars or into the wheel wells. Starting or moving the vehicle can hurt or even kill a cat taking shelter inside a car. So during winter months, it’s a good idea to bang loudly on your car hood before starting the engine as a warning to a cat that might be in or around your vehicle. Be careful with your dog near water. If you live near a pond, lake or other inland water source that tends to freeze over during cold weather, take care when letting your dog off the leash. Animals can easily fall through the ice, and it’s very difficult for them to escape on their own, or for humans to rescue them. Wipe down your dog after a trip outdoors. Pets who go outside during the winter months can pick up rock salt, ice, antifreeze, and other toxic chemicals on their footpads. To keep your dog’s paws from becoming chapped and raw, and to prevent ingestion of toxins, thoroughly wipe off his feet, legs, and underside after he’s been outside in the snow and ice. Also regularly check your pet’s paws for any signs of injury or bleeding from walking on frozen or snow-packed surfaces. Consider investing in a sweater for a shorthaired, older or frail pet. Some pets won’t wear items of clothing no matter how chilly they are. But if your pet tolerates it well, a sweater can help keep your dog warm, especially when you take her outdoors. But keep in mind that pets lose most of their body heat through the pads of their feet, their ears and their respiratory tract, so there’s a limit to how much warmth a sweater or jacket will provide. Signs your pet is uncomfortably cold include whining, shivering, appearing anxious, slowing down or stopping, and looking for a warm place to burrow. Let your pet’s coat grow. Don’t shave or clip your dog’s (or cat’s) coat short during the winter months. A longer coat will keep her warmer. Be extra-cautious with your senior, arthritic or frail pet. Cold weather can be especially difficult for senior pets and those with degenerative joint disease or another chronic, debilitating condition. Talk with your holistic vet about physical therapy and other safe, natural methods for improving your pet’s comfort and mobility during cold weather. And make sure your pet has a thick, soft bed in a warm room for naps and at bedtime.

They wait for symptoms to occur, and often treat those symptoms without addressing the root cause.” www.MercolaHealthyPets.com.
The Scoop on Holistic Pet Care Humans aren’t the only ones whose illnesses can be treated holistically. Animal owners are seeking holistic veterinary methods for their pets, too.
“What it really means is looking at the biggest possible picture,” Dr. Falconer says. “What’s the context that this animal is really in? Is it a lousy emotional environment; is it injury — is their nutrition part of the equation? Often, it’s more than one thing.”
3 Types of Holistic Veterinary Methods Though holistic medicine for pets has been around for ages, it has increased in popularity in the last few years, along with holistic care for people. Says Falconer, “People start thinking, ‘Gee, I could do this for my dog or cat or goose or whatever, and get as good a result as I’ve experienced myself.’”
Taking an ailing pet to the vet usually follows a certain routine: The doctor examines your pet, maybe administers a shot, and writes out a prescription to fix what’s bothering him. But some pet owners are now foregoing the classic vet visit in favor of a new approach — holistic pet care. Holistic pet care, including holistic canine care, is a way of treating a sick animal as a whole, instead of trying to cure an isolated problem, says Will Falconer, DVM, a veterinarian and certified veterinary homeopath in Austin, Texas.
This Month's Great Pix

However, holistic pet treatment is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. There are several different types of holistic veterinary approaches to pet health. The most popular include:
Traditional Chinese veterinary medicine.
Known as TCVM for short, this approach is based on the principle that sickness is caused by imbalances in a pet’s body. A TCVM practitioner may use “opposite” treatments to restore balance, thereby improving the animal’s health. “If a pet has diarrhea, for example, the TCVM approach is to slow things down and take out the heat, or the cold, or whatever it is that is causing the illness,” Falconer says. Traditional Chinese veterinary medicine practitioners may also use Chinese herbs or acupuncture (a treatment in which small needles are placed under the skin).
Homeopathy.
This school of thought uses the principle of “like cures like” to treat disease. “With homeopathy, we usually say ‘You’ve got this diarrhea because you’re trying to get well,’” Falconer explains. “We’ll give you something to briefly kick that into a little higher gear so it can resolve itself.” Falconer, who is a homeopathic practitioner, may prescribe nutritional changes, such as raw-food diets, for some of his patients. “Dogs and cats, at least, come from a background of eating raw food for millennia,” Falconer says. “A cat is a desert animal that’s a carnivore. You shouldn’t raise them on dry food.”
Chiropractic. Like their counterparts who treat people, chiropractors tending to animals feel that some illnesses stem from physical disorders, like misalignment of the spine. “They believe that if we can straighten the spine and get energy flowing, the animals can do a lot of good and repair themselves,” Falconer says. Chiropractic specialists may do adjustments, in which they gently correct bone and joint misalignments. No matter what type of holistic vet you choose, you can expect most practitioners to spend a lot of time examining your pet and getting a complete pet health history since their treatment plan will be personalized for your pet’s specific situation. “I typically spend an hour asking lots of questions,” Falconer says, explaining that he wants to choose the best treatment for each individual animal rather than just basing it on the general diagnosis.

The Fairy’s New Year Gift
Gems for the Soul
T
By Emilie Poulsson
wo little boys were at play one day when a Fairy suddenly appeared before them and said, “I have been sent to give you New Year presents.” She handed to each child a package, and in an instant was gone. Carl and Philip opened the packages and found in them two beautiful books, with pages as pure and white as the snow when it first falls. Many months passed and the Fairy came again to the boys. “I have brought you each another book?” said she, “and will take the first ones back to Father Time who sent them to you.” “May I not keep mine a little longer?” asked Philip. “I have hardly thought about it lately. I’d like to paint something on the last leaf that lies open.” “No,” said the Fairy; “I must take it just as it is.” “I wish that I could look through mine just once,” said Carl; “I have only seen one page at a time, for when the leaf turns over it sticks fast, and I can never open the book at more than one place each day.” “You shall look at your book,” said the Fairy, “and Philip, at his.” And she lit for them two little silver lamps, by the light of which they saw the pages as she turned them.
The boys looked in wonder. Could it be that these were the same fair books she had given them a year ago? Where were the clean, white pages, as pure and beautiful as the snow when it first falls? Here was a page with ugly, black spots and scratches upon it; while the very next page showed a lovely little picture. Some pages were decorated with gold and silver and gorgeous colors, others with beautiful flowers, and still others with a rainbow of softest, most delicate brightness. Yet even on the most beautiful of the pages there were ugly blots and scratches. Carl and Philip looked up at the Fairy at last. “Who did this?” they asked. “Every page was white and fair as we opened to it; yet now there is not a single blank place in the whole book!”
“Shall I explain some of the pictures to you?” said the Fairy, smiling at the two little boys. “See, Philip, the spray of roses blossomed on this page when you let the baby have your playthings; and this pretty bird, that looks as if it were singing with all its might, would never have been on this page if you had not tried to be kind and pleasant the other day, instead of quarreling.” “But what makes this blot?” asked Philip. “That,” said the Fairy sadly; “that came when you told an untruth one day, and this when you did not mind mamma. All these blots and scratches that look so ugly, both in your book and in Carl’s, were made when you were naughty. Each pretty thing in your books came on its page when you were good.”
“Oh, if we could only have the books again!” said Carl and Philip. “That cannot be,” said the Fairy. “See! they are dated for this year, and they must now go back into Father Time’s bookcase, but I have brought you each a new one. Perhaps you can make these more beautiful than the others.” So saying, she vanished, and the boys were left alone, but each held in his hand a new book open at the first page. Answers on Pg 25

Protecting Your Brain
Finding ways to fight Alzheimer’s and dementia naturally
Dr. Isaac Eliaz, MD., MS., L.As
Medical science has made wondrous advances to extend lifespan. But, despite our best efforts, long life does not always translate into good health. A worst-case scenario that many people fear is having a functioning body, stricken with dementia. Memory is at the core of who we are in many ways, and losing it is a frightening prospect.
fact, a certain form of vascular Alzheimer’s is associated with cardiovascular disease, as reduced blood flow and plaque deposits in the brain mirror the same deadly processes occurring in the cardiovascular system. Natural therapies that reduce arterial and vascular plaque have been shown helpful for cardiovascular disease as well as Alzheimer’s.
More than five million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. This number is estimated to triple by 2050. Memory loss is an early sign: as the disease advances, other symptoms include behavioral changes, disorientation and confusion, unfounded suspicions, difficulty speaking, and others. Imaging tests in Alzheimer’s patients reveal brain shrinkage and reduced brain cell activity in certain areas. Amyloid plaque deposits in the brain are also associated with progression of the disease.
Other major risk factors include a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, depression, diabetes, and obesity. Aluminum deposits in the brain are also a potential culprit, so avoiding everyday contact with this metal may reduce risks. It is a common food additive in many processed foods and baked goods, cookware, and utensils, as well as many over-the-counter medications like antacids. Women seem to have a slightly higher risk for the disease, but it’s unclear whether this is due to physiological differences, or because women on average have longer lifespans.
Alzheimer’s is fatal and is the sixth leading cause of death in the US. While the mortality rates for cancer, heart disease, and other conditions have gone down, Alzheimer’s rates are on the rise. RISK FACTORS There is no specific test for Alzheimer’s, but there are a number of factors that can put us at greater risk. Genetics are part of that profile, but this relationship is not always clear. For example, a gene called Apo£4 (Apolipoprotein) increases the chance of developing Alzheimer’s, but does not make it a certainty. There are other genes that have a more direct link to the condition. They are associated with rare, usually early-onset, versions. Individuals may want to have a genetic profile analysis to clarify risk. Heart health is emerging as a major factor. The brain is heavily reliant on oxygen and nutrients carried through the bloodstream, so any cardiovascular and circulatory problems have a ripple effect on cognitive health. High blood pressure and cholesterol can significantly raise the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. In PAGE 16 • january, 2014 • IN LIGHT TIMES
CAN EXERCISE HELP? The relationship between exercise and brain power has been known for some time. Around 20 years ago, researchers at the Salk Institute found that active mice had more neurons in parts of the brain devoted to memory. More recently, studies have shown that exercise may delay cognitive decline. As noted, reduced blood flow is a factor in Alzheimer ’s and dementia, while better circulation seems to reduce risk. Exercise increases the number of small blood vessels throughout the body and has been found to enhance brain connectivity. Aerobic exercise, like walking and running, is particularly beneficial. A number of studies have compared the mental acuity of older adults based on their activity. One study looked at women over 65 who walked 30 minutes each day. Other research examined the activity in people over 70 and the results have been consistent. When compared to the sedentary control groups, active participants did better on mental tests and showed reduced cognitive decline.
But don’t neglect s t r e n g t h training. A recent study by scientists at the University of British Columbia found that women with mild cognitive impairment improved their memory following weight training. Results showed that women who did weight training and aerobics performed far better on memory tests than those who simply stretched. This is a very fruitful field for research, and there are quite a few studies being conducted to determine whether exercise can specifically lower the risk of Alzheimer’s. However, given exercise’s proven benefits in other areas, it only makes sense to kick it up a notch. WHAT ABOUT DIET? Like exercise, eating well appears to reduce dementia risk. As noted, cardiovascular disease is a risk factor for cognitive decline. In other words, choosing foods that protect the heartlean proteins, whole grains and legumes, healthy fats, and lots of fruits and vegetablescan improve brain health as well. Incorporate leafy green and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale. Some research has shown that these can reduce cognitive decline. As a bonus, they are also good for the immune system and hormone metabolism. Omega-3 fatty acids and other healthy fats also support brain health. One study showed that brains deficient in omega-3s tend to be smaller. Fatty fish like wild salmon are a great source as are raw nuts and seeds. Some animal studies have shown that one form of omega-3 (DHA) reduces amyloid plaque in the brain. On the other end of the spectrum, studies show that the Western diet is a risk factor. This type of diet—heavy in refined carbohydrates, unhealthy fats, and processed foods-reduces learning and memory and contributes to other

diseases, including cardiovascular disease. SUPPLEMENTS We think of mental stress as the overwhelmed sensation we feel when too much is going on, but there’s another form that affects the brain. Oxidative stress happens when excess free radicals and toxins wreak havoc and cause chronic inflammation throughout the body. There is growing evidence linking oxidative stress with dementia, Alzheimer’s, and general cognitive decline. One compound that has shown some promise in studies is resveratrol. a potent antioxidant found in high concentrations in red wine. Some studies have shown that people who drink moderate amounts of red wine have lower risk of Alzheimer’s. Animal studies have also shown that resveratrol reduces amyloid plaque. Honokiol, an active compound derived from magnolia bark, is another powerful antioxidant shown to protect the brain through several mechanisms. Magnolia bark has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries as a mild sedative. Research shows that this calming effect is linked to honokiol’s actions on GABA receptors in the brain. As an antioxidant, honokiol is 1,000 times more powerful than vitamin E: it is also a potent antiinflammatory compound. One of honokiol’s unique characteristics is that it can cross the blood-brain barrier, where it is shown to protect against brain inflammation and amyloid plaque deposits. Further more, honokiol stimulates the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is a critical benefit since Alzheimer’s patients have lower levels of acetylcholine. In my practice, I recommend 98-percent pure honokiol. You can read up on honokiol’s research and benefits at HonokiolReport.org. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has also been used in traditional Asian practices for centuries. Again, modern research is confirming its benefits. In another powerful study from the Salk Institute, a drug created from curcumin reversed Alzheimer’s in mice. More research
A number of studies have found that social connections can reduce dementia. Of course, as we age, social engagement can become m o r e d i f f i c u l t . We m a y lose contact with peers, face reduced mobility and have fewer opportunities to interact with others. While these obstacles are s i g n i f i c a n t , t h e y a re n o t insurmountable. One of the best things we can do for our brain is to maintain connections with family, friends, and community.
Scientists at UCLA found that meditation increases the folding in the cerebral cortex, which improves how the brain processes information. This positively impacts our ability to retrieve memories, form decisions and focus. will need to be done to confirm this finding, but it’s a good confirmation of curcumin’s benefits for brain health. Other studies have shown curcumin and turmeric to benefit memory and brain function, perhaps due to their powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. MEDITATION Good for the brain in many ways. meditation helps control stress and maintain positive mood. It also appears to improve memory. One study observed Alzheimer’s patients as they practiced a specific form of meditation. In follow-up tests, participants showed increased blood flow to the brain and improved scores on cognitive tests. Another study showed that meditation can actually change how the brain is structured. Scientists at UCLA found that meditation increases the folding in the cerebral cortex, which improves how the brain processes information. This positively impacts our ability to retrieve memories, form decisions, and focus. BEING SOCIAL Social engagement also improves brain function. People who volunteer, attend lectures, work collaboratively or have other forms of engagement tend to do better cognitively. This is no surprise: social engagement has been shown to increase lifespan, improve health, and decrease depression. It only makes sense that it would also benefit mental capabilities.
While Alzheimer ’s disease has no cure, that doesn’t mean we are helpless. Continuing research is highlighting many measures that can help control cognitive decline. By incorporating a healthy diet, regular exercise, smart supplementation, meditation, and social interaction, we take positive steps to keep our minds sharp as we age. In the process, we also boost cardiovascular health and improve our overall quality of life. It’s a yes-brainer, winning formula.

To Detox or Not to Seven Detox…That is the Reasons to Question Ditch Diet Herbalist Kathleen Gould, rh

Over the past decade, the scientific evidence linking diet soda to adverse health outcomes has been progressively mounting. Here are seven reasons to “Just Say No” to all of them: January, as we come down from our sugar high of the holidays, many people make those New Year’s Resolutions to lose weight, stop smoking, begin exercising and yes, Detox. If we could somehow get all those bad toxins out of our bodies, perhaps we could lose the weight, right?
But what is detoxification anyway? If you look at many of the products on the market used for detoxification we often find that they are filled with laxatives and diuretics which often leave us weak and depleted; although they do seem to help us lose weight, the weight usually comes back quickly. This is because the weight we lose is often just water weight and not fat. It is very true, however, that in today’s world, we are exposed to an unprecedented number of toxins. Our environment is loaded with chemicals and pollutants like pesticides, food additives, heavy metals, drugs and the list goes on and on and on. So what can one do? First, our bodies are created as selfcleansing and self-healing; so detoxification is an ongoing process that is happening in every moment. We are eliminating toxins via the liver, kidneys, urination, sweat and exhalation. There are two parts to this detox process. One is the detox and the second and very important is rebuilding. Many folks are now looking to herbs because they can rebuild and strengthen the body at the same time they are working to detox. Our liver is our body’s master filter and often by using simple, abundant and inexpensive herbs like dandelion, burdock, yellow dock etc. We can gently clear the congestion in the liver and because they are so rich in totally absorbable vitamins, minerals and a huge host of nutrients, which strengthen and support the body at the same time. Please note that we are talking about whole plant medicines which are foods to our body. These amazing herbs gently stimulate the liver, intestines and bowels to release toxins and move them out of the body. Signs that you may want to detox; if you have skin eruptions (acne, eczema, psoriasis, rash, boils, cysts etc.). If you have pain (headaches, arthritis, backaches etc.). If you have allergies, digestive problems, constipation, depression, fatigue or low energy, bad breath or body odor, weight gain or dry brittle hair or nails. One suggestion, take a walk through your body and list on paper everything that is going on i.e. my hair is dry, my nails are splitting and brittle, I have pain in my right knee (give pain a 1 to 10 number so you have a comparison point when you are finished), I have a fungus on my right big toe and so forth. Now put that paper in a drawer and mark your calendar for 3 months from the day you start your detox. Make up a tea like this one.
Detoxing Your Body 2 parts Dandelion root 2 parts Burdock root 1 part Pau’d Arco 1 part Cinnamon 1/2 part Yellow dock root 1/2 part Licorice (careful if high blood Pressure).
Kidney Disease One study found that drinking two servings of diet cola a day more than doubled the risk of chronic kidney disease (Epidemiology, July 2007). Metabolic Syndrome In the famed Framingham study, drinking more than just one diet soda daily was associated with a 50-60% increase in the risk of developing metabolic syndrome (Circulation, July 2007). Heart Attacks & Strokes A study involving over 2,500 older adults noted a 44% higher risk of heart attacks and strokes in those who drank diet soda daily (Journal of General Internal Medicine, February 2012). Premature Birth One study noted a 38% boost in pre-term delivery in women consuming at least one serving of diet soda a day (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, July 2010). Weight Gain An evaluation involving over 1,500 American adults found that drinking 1-2 cans of diet soda a day was tied to a 54% increase in the risk of becoming overweight or obese (The Annual Meeting of the American Diabetes Association, San Diego, California, June 2005). A second report noted a 500% increase in belly size over a ten year period in those consuming two or more cans of diet soda a day. Depression According to a recent report from The American Academy of Neurology, four or more cans of diet soda daily was linked to a 30% higher risk of depression. Dental Erosion The acidity in diet sodas has been shown to erode tooth enamel. We know for sure that drinking diet drinks exploits our taste bud’s affinity for sweetness and likely propagates a sweet tooth. Lastly, if you are a parent, grandparent, or in some way work around children or teens, drinking diet sodas is BAD ROLE MODELING!

To make tea: In large soup pot mix one level teaspoon of herb per cup water, so if your pot holds 20 cups of water, then add 20 level teaspoons of herb blend. Cover tightly, bring to simmer and simmer about 20 minutes. Let sit off heat on stove overnight. In the morning, strain off herbs and refrigerate tea. Note: you can use your herbs a second time if you like. Begin by drinking one teacup full in the morning and 1 in the evening. You can slowly increase to 2-4 cups per day as your digestive system can handle it. Don’t be surprised if you begin to crave this tea because as your body begins to receive these amazing nutrients it often wants more. Drink tea for three months and then re-read that paper you wrote when you began. You may not recognize the person on that piece of paper. Give it a try and see for yourself. Free Fitness Apps That Rule
By Dr. Mercola
One of the best benefits to owning a smartphone or tablet is that you can quickly turn it into a fitness assistance tool just by downloading the right apps.
This technology is far underutilized, especially given that oftentimes the apps are free, as only about 19 percent of mobile phone users have downloaded a health app. Millennials (those aged 25 to 34 years) are those most likely to use health and fitness apps, and they do so about twice as often as other age groups If you have yet to try one, sifting through the estimated 40,000 available mobile health apps may sound daunting, which is why I like to highlight some of the best available apps for you.
Two of My Favorite Fitness Apps
In 2011, for the first time ever, people in the US spent more time on mobile apps than they did on the Internet.3 The Internet is being progressively relegated to a background infrastructure that allows people to access data through apps with an elegant user interface. This is shockingly remarkable when you consider that mobile apps have only been around for several years, but it’s also indicative of a technology that’s likely here to stay. Many of you know that I have a passion for technology in addition to health, so health apps, which combine the two, are invaluable to a “gadget geek” like me. I have
scanned many thousands of articles and downloaded several hundred applications, and the app suggestions that follow are among those I consider to be quite valuable. Keep in mind that when using fitness apps, the phone or tablet can be kept in airplane mode to minimize any wireless electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure while still accessing the amazing computer power.
MyFitnessPal
By far one of my favorite apps, this free app lets you track your activity and food/caloric intake using an activity log and food diary. The food calorie portion is one of the best pieces of software out there to record and keep track of your food macronutrients. I use this app nearly every day to record my food intake and help me keep track of my macronutrient ratios. It’s an incredibly easy way to monitor your food intake without a lot of fuss. MyFitnessPal has an easy to use interface that allows you to access about 1 million food items in its database, plus you can also add your own foods and recipes at any time and access them from anywhere with an Internet connection. Once you enter new food nutritional information, it will be there for you the next time you need it. I really love this app as it quickly and easily allows you to see the number of grams of carbs, fats, and protein you’re eating. I consider myself fairly sophisticated nutritionally, but I was really shocked when I found out what the actual numbers were. This is a very powerful tool and best of all, it is free.
Fitness Builder
For keeping track of your workouts, this is my favorite app. I don’t use MyFitnessPal to record my workouts, I use this app. There are loads of exercise applications on the Net but Fitness Builder, in my experience, is the most comprehensive fitness database in the world. It also contains the largest library of exercise images and videos, the most challenging workouts across all disciplines, access to a live personal trainer and a complete set of every fitness tool, a calculator and tracking features. Most all of the apps I have are free, but this one costs $10 for the base version and it is worth every penny if you use it,

Health Lights Take Control of Your Health with These 8 Free Fitness Apps The apps that follow were compiled by Cosmopolitan. They’re free, so you have nothing to lose by giving them a try (except, perhaps, an inch or two from your waist)…
1. Lose It
Keep track of your daily calorie intake simply with this calorie tracker. Especially useful is the app’s ability to estimate how many calories you can burn with different exercises.
2. GAIN Fitness Cross Trainer
Get fitness tips directly from personal trainers and even create a customizable workout matched to your fitness level, goals, and time constraints.
3. Jillian Michaels Slim-Down
This app allows you to track calories, food, and fitness while also supplying step-by-step videos, fat-burning exercises, recipes, meal and fitness plans and even a bar code scanner for nutrition facts labels.
4. How to Lose Belly Fat
Get a step-by-step plan, including tips and videos, on how to banish belly fat.
Beyond Fitness Apps Top Tips for Getting Fit You can certainly get fit without a smartphone. But many of you reading this already have and use smartphones and tablets. What you may not have access to is a gym, personal trainer or any type of exercise equipment. For little or no cost, you can access countless workouts via these apps, allowing you to get a fabulous workout you may not have otherwise had, which is one of the most productive, and least dangerous, uses for these devices. That said, even if you plan to use fitness apps, you might be unsure of where to start in creating a comprehensive fitness program. I recommend incorporating highintensity interval training (HIIT), strength training, core exercises, stretching, and non-exercise activity into your routine. If you haven’t yet tried HIIT, it’s a wonderful exercise option when you don’t have a lot of time, as it takes only 20 minutes for a full workout. The HIIT approach I personally prefer and recommend is the Peak Fitness method shown in the video below, where one warms up and then performs 30 seconds of maximum effort followed by 90 seconds of recuperation. I will modify the number of repetitions from 8 to 6 when I need to, as it is sometimes just too strenuous for me to do all 8. So by listening to my body and cutting it back to 6 reps, I can tolerate the workout and go full out.
5. The 7-Minute Workout
If you have seven minutes, and this app, you can fit in a great fullbody workout. The app has 12 sets of seven-minute workouts with audio so you can focus on your workouts – not paying attention to your phone.
6. Nike Training Club
This app has more than 100 custom-built workouts to help you get lean, toned and strong. It’s like having your own personal trainer and even lets you choose music to go along with your workout.
7. Fitocracy
Track your workouts, get fitness tips, and reach your personal fitness achievements by joining this social fitness community.
8. GymPact
First, you set goals, such as how many times you’ll go to the gym in a week, as well as set a monetary amount you’d be willing to pay if you don’t. If you reach your goals, you earn a cash reward. If you don’t, you “donate” your money to a community pot that pays others who reach their goals.
I then finish my Peak Fitness workout with Power Plate stretches, 10 pull-ups, 10 dips, and 20 inverted push-ups, and call it a day. In most cases, HIIT workouts should only be done two or three times a week. But that doesn’t mean you should take all the other days off. Switching up your workouts will ensure your muscles continue to be challenged and prevent plateaus in your fitness growth. You want to avoid overtaxing any one area of your body and having a varied workout program helps you to do this naturally. This is again where fitness apps can be invaluable, as they offer hundreds of different workouts so your muscles are continually challenged.
Dr. Mercola. My passion is to transform the traditional medical paradigm in the United States, and that consumes most of my free time. Since 1968, though, I have been an active runner; I completed the Chicago Marathon in just over three hours, among other accomplishments. I have also been a computer hobbyist since 1985, with an interest in the Internet that dates back to the early 1990s. The existing medical establishment is responsible for killing and permanently injuring millions of Americans, but the surging numbers of visitors to Mercola.com since I began the site in 1997 - we are now routinely among the top 10 health sites on the Internet - convinces me that you, too, are fed up with their deception. You want practical health solutions without the hype, and that’s what I offer. Visit: Mercola.com.

Top Foods to Increase Your
METABOLISM By Marianna Szoke Before we dive into what foods increase your metabolism, it is important to understand what your metabolism is and how it works. The metabolism process determines the rate at which we burn our calories and, ultimately, how quickly a person can gain weight or how quickly a person can lose it. When your cells need energy they will break down carbohydrates first. Your body then breaks down fat and finally protein. Then the body converts carbohydrates into glucose (a form of sugar) that your body uses as fuel. Any surplus carbohydrates that you eat will be formed into fat for storage. It is important to not forget that any fat that you eat will also be stored as fat. Eating and exercising correctly, will result in you burning those fat stores and increasing your metabolism. When you participate in aerobic exercising, your metabolism speeds up for 4 to eight hours after you have stopped exercising. Strength training does not necessarily speed up your metabolism, but it does however, burn fat and enhances your lean muscle mass which then raises your resting metabolic rate. Participating in both aerobic exercise and strength training is best for optimal fat burning and metabolism increase. Dieting and skipping meals actually slows down your body’s metabolism because your body needs to compensate for the lack of nutrients. When picking foods to boost up your metabolism, pick items such as lean protein and vegetables. It is very important to limit sugary foods, alcohol, caffeine, and don’t smoke! Below are a list of foods that will help you increase your metabolism. 1. Whey Protein • Whey protein is probably one of the best things you can have that will boost your metabolism and it is a complete high quality protein. 2. Almonds • Almonds are full of good fats, fiber and protein. They contain a good amount of fatty acids that help raise your body’s metabolism. Almonds, along with cashews, pine, and walnuts contain good fats and antioxidants. 3. Spinach • Spinach is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins that are also good for other parts of the body. 4. Beans • Beans have a good amount of fiber and a decent amount of protein. 5. Natural Yogurt • Natural yogurt contains several pro-biotic cultures that are essential for a healthy digestive tract. 6. Eggs • Eggs have a great deal of quality protein and should be a part of every person’s diet. It is probably one of the best foods to speed up the metabolism. 7. Vegetables • Face it. Vegetables are just good for you. Eat fresh or lightly cooked veggies! 8. Peanut Butter • Peanut butter contains a good amount of essential fatty acids. However, be wise in how you eat it. Try mixing it with cottage cheese, on a celery stick, or an apple. 9. Whole Grains • Whole grains will supply you with the energy you need. When choosing whole grains, make sure the product is not enriched. 10. Chicken Breast • Skinless is a better choice!

Medically reviewed by Ed Zimney, MD 8 Key Questions About Rheumatoid Arthritis
8 Key Questions About Rheumatoid Arthritis What are the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis? How can I control pain? Get these answers and more. 1. What is rheumatoid arthritis? Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is a systemic inflammatory disease that causes pain, stiffness, swelling, and loss of motion in the joints. It is an autoimmune disease — one of many which, for unknown reasons, a person’s immune system attacks his or her own body tissues. In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system attacks the synovium, the tissue lining the joints. This causes an inflammation that can lead to the destruction of the synovium and the joint. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs in all types of people. But there are several characteristics many patients share: The disease often begins when people are between the ages of 40 and 60. Rheumatoid arthritis is more common in women than in men. People who have close relatives with rheumatoid arthritis may be at increased risk of developing the disease. 2. What are the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis? The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis vary from person to person and can mimic those of other inflammatory joint conditions, sometimes making diagnosis difficult. Common RA symptoms include: Tender, warm, swollen, and stiff joints, often first noticed in the hands and feet, and usually symmetrical. For example, both wrists are affected at the same time.
Stiffness and pain that are usually worse after waking in the morning and last at least an hour before improving with use and motion. Tiredness, low-grade fever, weight loss, and a general feeling of malaise that may develop even before the onset of joint symptoms. Soft lumps called rheumatoid nodules that range in size from a pea to a walnut, which occur in 20 to 30 percent of people with RA. 3. How is rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed? A primary care physician may be able to diagnose RA by eliminating other conditions. But a specialist called a rheumatologist is better trained to detect the signs and symptoms of RA and would be more knowledgeable about the latest treatments. 4. What’s the cause of rheumatoid arthritis? Researchers have yet to uncover the cause or causes of rheumatoid arthritis. However, it’s thought that a combination of factors triggers RA, including abnormal activity of the immune system acting against the body — called an autoimmune response — genetic susceptibility, and some environmental or biologic triggers, such as viral infections or hormonal changes.
Medications that include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroids, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologic therapies Physical therapy Surgery to repair damaged joints Alternative and complementary therapies such as acupuncture, massage, or biofeedback for pain control 6. Is there a cure for rheumatoid arthritis? There is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis — but with the right treatment, the disease can be well-managed. The key to living comfortably with RA is adhering to your treatment plan and communicating with your doctor about symptoms and treatment side effects. 7. How do I manage my rheumatoid arthritis? One of the best ways to control RA is to undergo aggressive treatment in
the early stages of the disease so your symptoms do not get worse. It’s also a good idea to keep a diary of your symptoms and let your doctor know about any changes in your condition — positive or negative — that might affect treatment choices. Compliance with prescribed medications is also important. 8. Will rheumatoid arthritis eventually make me disabled? Rheumatoid arthritis varies greatly from person to person, so it’s hard to predict a typical course for the disease. Doctors now believe that joint deterioration because of RA begins early in the disease and that treatment to prevent progression should begin early as well. Early treatment with appropriate drugs, often used in combination, may curtail the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and slow or even stop damage to the joints, thus preventing or slowing disability.

5. What’s the treatment for rheumatoid arthritis? RA patients use a combination of treatments to relieve pain, improve mobility, and slow down or perhaps even stop damage to the joints. A treatment plan may include: Lifestyle modifications: exercise, stress reduction, healthful eating.

How to Detect Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis Learn the early warning signs and symptoms that may indicate the severity of your rheumatoid arthritis. One of the tricky things about treating rheumatoid arthritis is that it doesn’t progress in everyone the same way. Much research has been conducted to try and determine what determines who will develop severe RA and whose joint damage will start quickly and then slow over time. A recent study published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases is the latest to confirm that clinical evaluations and ultrasounds can be powerful tools for predicting RA damage. Several measurements can give you and your doctor “strong predictors of worse outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis,” says E. William St. Clair, MD, a professor and rheumatoid arthritis expert at the Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. In essence, such factors may point to worse rheumatoid arthritis down the line. These include: The number of swollen, painful joints you have. “Having more joints with pain and swelling suggests more severe disease”, says Dr. St. Clair. Swelling and pain in joints are hallmark symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatologists often think this is a very important way to measure the severity of arthritis. Your doctor may take several minutes to evaluate joints in your hands, feet, shoulders, hips, elbows, and other spots to see how many are causing problems.

Rheumatoid factor. Rheumatoid factor (RF) is an blood antibody that can help trigger inflammationrelated problems in the body that is believed to cause further joint damage. Researchers who looked at a British database of patients with arthritis found that being negative for RF and having fewer than six tender joints early in the disease were linked to a better chance of having remission of the disease in the following years. Your doctor can measure RF easily by drawing blood from your vein and having it tested Anti-CCP. This blood test checks for antibodies to a protein called citrulline. Roughly half of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis will have anti-CCP antibodies after a few months of symptoms. Research has shown that these patients will have a more jointdamaging level of disease. X-ray evidence. Signs of disease on X-rays soon after you have symptoms are linked to more severe joint damage later. Quality of life. Patients in the British arthritis registry fill out Health Assessment Questionnaires (HAQ) on a regular basis. This allows them to report their pain and the disability they have while doing certain tasks. The score on the HAQ has been linked to the outcome of the patient’s disease.
aggressive in treating it, St. Clair says. Attacking the disease early may reduce your risk of joint damage. “We have a considerable amount of evidence that early intervention does lead to improved outcomes. We have many more options than we did 10 or 15 years ago, and our threshold for intervention is lower today than it was 5 or 10 years ago,” he says. Warning Signs of RA If you have not been diagnosed with RA, but are experiencing joint pain, look out for the following RA-specific symptoms: Pain in “small” joints, such as the hands or feet Symmetrical pain that is in the same location on both sides of the body Swelling in joints in multiple areas If you experience any of these symptoms, visit a doctor to determine if it’s RA or something else.

Awakened Oracle Astrology
Welcome to the New Year. As 2013 came to a close, a theme began to emerge in the Astrological readings for clients. I saw this theme again in the work for this column over the last few months. The theme is that 2014 will, indeed, be very new. In this case, however, I use the word “new” as in “previously unknown”. I am very excited to see this on the horizon, as I am sure most of you are. I am also reminded that change can be challenging, even change for the better. “New” is an adjustment and it takes some time (and effort) to adjust. It will take some time and awareness to understand what is new because the “old” that has fallen away was limiting, diminishing and often painful, but it was the devil that we knew. The “new” does not have the same limits, is not diminishing and offers unlimited possibilities. It is up to us to mold the unlimited possibilities into what we desire. So the message for this New Year is to be conscious about what you want, and relax your concerns about what you do not want. 2014 will shape up into what you ask it to be. Happy New Year! Astrology uses the placement of all planets at the moment of your birth to determine the “Matrix” of energy you are working through this lifetime. The sign determines the process of connecting with that aspect of you. For instance, the Sun may be in Scorpio at birth, but Libra does not define “Who you Are”, it determines the process by which you will connect with “Who you Are”. Energy for January 2014 Strength: Our strength will come from Forgiveness. Release the past and bless yourself and everyone’s role in it. Forgiveness does not condone any behavior. Forgiveness simply releases the pain to the past. Challenge: Our challenge is that we are undergoing an Initiation. We are moving beyond what had been into a new experience of ourselves and the possibilities. Totem Energy: Our totem is Elk; the totem of Self Esteem and Strength. Draw your strength from your sense of self. Bring your strength to your friends and family. Energetic Our theme is Finding Our Talents; Acknowledge your Gifts. We play our Sacred Role when we bring forth our Sacred Gifts. Moon Cycles New Moon: January 1st, 3:14am PST- 10° Capricorn; New Moon Message: Assess your personal values. Be honest with yourself about what your true needs are. Avoid inflating or undervaluing yourself in this assessment. Full Wolf Moon: January 15th, 8:52pm PST - 25° Cancer; Full Moon Message: Relish your joy. Seek out like-minded peers and enjoy the camaraderie of your shared interests.
ARIES • Mar. 21 to Apr. 19
Totem: Bear (Power, Wisdom). Balance is what you desire and it will come naturally this month. The Bear sleeps in winter and revitalizes his dreams. You may wish to hibernate to reinstate balance. Allow yourself to slow down. This will allow your dreams and wisdom to come to consciousness again. This is not a time of action. This is a time of meditation and mediation.
TAURUS • Apr. 20 to May 20
Totem: Coyote (Humor, Survival). Time to Wake up! Coyote indicates that you may have brought many powerful lessons to yourself of late. Taurus can dig in and resist change when he does not like the lessons he is learning. Loosen up and laugh at your struggle. Accept that all circumstances are for your benefit. Coyote makes it impossible to save your face and your bottom at the same time.
GEMINI • May 21 to June 20
Totem: Badger (Tenacity, Healing). Know your own mind. You are surrounded by the strength and protection necessary to speak your truth. The time has come to assert what you believe. Any situation in your life where you see that insight is lacking will produce the greatest healing for you and others. The mental fog will clear and you will be asked to share in situations where confusion has ruled.
Cancer ~ June 21 to July 22
Totem: Sun dancer (Compassion, Endurance). Be patient with yourself and the process at this time. You are involved in a situation that requires that you work for the benefit of others. You may not be comfortable in the process. You will need endurance to sustain the work required to accomplish this task. The effort may not show immediate results. However, the cause is worthy, so maintain your focus.
Introducing Capricorn December 22nd to January 19th “I Utilize”
Ruling Planet: Saturn ~ Rules: Teeth, Bones, Spine ~ Symbol: The Goat ~ Element: Earth ~ Energy: Feminine ~ Quality: Cardinal ~ Gem: Garnet ~ Flowers: Pansey & Cornflower ~ Color: Navy Blue ~ Most Compatible Signs: Taurus, Cancer & Virgo ~ Higher Octave of Capricorn Energy: We have faced the challenges of physical limitations and societal structures. We hold the natural authority of having met and overcome these challenges. We now understand the benefits of these areas of life. ~ Lower Octave of Capricorn Energy: We demand respect based on evidence of external success. We acquire our authority rather than allow it to naturally develop from facing challenges and fears. Full Spectrum of the Capricorn/Cancer Axis: We hold authority born of facing our fears and coming to terms with the natural limitations of life while valuing our emotions and retaining respect for nurturance as well as accomplishment.
C
apricorn is the Mountain Goat; the animal that thrives at the top of the mountain. She has faced the Saturnian domain of structure, organization and social accomplishment and desires the satisfaction of succeeding in these areas of life. Capricorn is where we understand the strength we develop by facing of our challenges. Capricorns mate in life is Cancer. Cancer seeks safe and secure environments that promote emotional development and nurturance. In contrast, Capricorn understands the need to step away from our emotional and physical comfort zone and take on the challenge of personal growth. Capricorn intuitively understands that pushing through resistance is required to build strength. And that building healthy structures, organizations and societies require the strength born of leaving our comfort zone. Capricorn is the part of us that respects what works and what is. Often seen as the home of the “Old Guard”, Capricorn will maintain the status quo, even if she sees that the status quo is dying, because she realizes that the old structures must be maintained until the new structures are strong enough to support us. Capricorn embraces success, authority and societal standing.

Libra ~ Sept. 23 to Oct. 22
Totem: Lynx (Independence, Mystery). You are feeling your power at this time. Advances will result from subtle, independent actions. Balance and harmony are your goals and you have the power to achieve them this month. Do not shy away from your ability to accomplish something important. Embrace the mystery in life as you play your role even when you may not understand the purpose.
Scorpio ~ Oct. 23 to Nov. 21
Totem: Birther (Bringing for the New). The wind is at your back as your bring forth what you desire. Scorpio longs to merge personal and transpersonal desires. At this time you will find that merger birthing new relationships and creations with ease. You have an intuitive sense of how to bridge those desires. Trust yourself. What you create will serve others as well as yourself.
Sagittarius ~ Nov. 22 to Dec. 21
Totem: Rabbit (Timidity, Alertness). Stay alert at this time. You may have relied on bravado to overcome your fears. This will not serve you now. Listen to an inner voice that may be alerting you to danger. Conversely, acknowledge that some of your fears are unfounded and banish them forever. Face your fears rather than avoid them and take time to determine if they are warranted.
Capricorn ~ Dec. 22 to Jan. 19
Totem: Medicine Woman (Creativity, Earth Connection). Medicine Woman renews our connection with our Earth. It is time to accept that some mothering may be required. Maybe you need to offer nurturance to others. Or possibly, it is time to acknowledge that you need some mothering yourself. Reconnect with the needs of your planet and your body. None of us can succeed without tending to our physical needs.
Leo ~ July 23 to Aug. 22
Totem: Eagle (Vision, Courage). You may have been under restrictions placed by others on your relationships in the last few months. Now you will rise above the mundane and seek the sunlight above the clouds. Return to your vision. See the glorious truth above any struggle and welcome the freedom from those artificial restrictions. Your relationships will be harmonious as long as your return to your sunny disposition.
Virgo ~ Aug. 23 to Sept 22
Totem: Rainbow Dancer (Personal Rhythm, Joy). Find your natural rhythm this month. Dance to the beat of your own drummer. Harmony in your relationships will take on new significance for you in the coming months, so now is the time to hear your own heartbeat. Your tendency to isolate may serve you well in this process. Get away from drone from the outside world to hear the rhythm of your inner voice.

your time has come.
Totem: Dolphin (Awareness, Harmony). Be aware of the natural tides and patterns of events. All of life follows an ebb and flow and you have learned to be a harbinger of change without “fighting the river”. If the tide is not with you right now, relax and wait for the natural cycle to restore the ease of progress. Fighting the cycle will exhaust you before
Pisces ~ Feb. 19 to March 20
Totem: Totem Pole (Lineage, Spirituality). The time has come to clarify your life’s message and purpose. Seek right relationship with your ancestors, lineage, and personal history. Find attitudes and beliefs that define you. To understand yourself now, you must understand who you have been. You already understand that we humans are at the bottom of the totem pole. All life is our relation. Include all kingdoms and dimensions in your search.
Empowered Numerology by Michele Avanti Alpha Numeric Numerology Chart
Welcome 2014’s Seven frequency. This will be a year of risk taking, change, moving forward and motivation. How you are nudged or raced forward will depend on many factors in your own numerology, both your birthday archetypes and your nominal numerology (the numerology of your name.) Let’s take a look at how it may activate the nine basic archetypes. One - The Messengers • As Seven activates a One, it adds the Eight frequency creating a need to rebalance during 2014. Rebalance can mean divorcing things, people, issues or circumstances that create imbalance in your life. This can be a difficult year for the One, but by the year’s end will be rewarding. As we go through life, there are periods where we reach a plateau and must look at what we have created. A Seven year forces that experience in one way or another. For the One, there is the ability to be at the steering wheel driving the change directly to the goal that is desired. Two – Dreamers • Dreamers receive more information this year that will lead to changes in their lives. These are driven by the Nine frequency, which means more visions, intuition, inner drive, gut response or gut reactions. It will be a year that creates a clearer link between the inner and outer worlds for Twos. How that works for each individual will depend on whether they welcome the information given or try to force it away. There are many levels of challenges in opening a psychic doorway. It causes some to become very sensitive and even emotional. For a man, this can be overwhelming and difficult. For a person who has attempted to keep this part of their lives quiet, seldom acknowledging it, it may be terrifying. But it is really a gift and if one will look at it as such, it will brighten their life and expand their ability to know what they want, to manifest what they want and help others attain the same. Three – Nurturers • Nurturers find they must carry the message this year. They will be asked to speak up, to say what must be said. This will create change and freedom for them as they step up to the podium. Though they frequently do for others, serve and refrain from controlling or attempting to get their own way, this year they will be pushed by the Seven frequency to speak their needs, to confront people who may be controlling them and recognize they have given their power away to someone or something. It is a powerful moment when a Three realizes they have the right to undo the ties they’ve allowed to bind them. Sometimes those ties are to people, property, job, money or some form of addiction. The Seven frequency will motivate a Three to make changes that will begin or deepen a path of self-love. Four – Patriarchs • Patriarchs must master their words this year as the Seven weaves in an Eleven energy, it will help them step up the way they speak to the Universe and will increase the clarity they need to manifest what they want. It will be a powerful year for the Four if they have already taken control of themselves and are not using their strong active minds to control others. However, some Fours may still be in that space of stealing others karma by telling them what to do and how to do it. These Fours may find the clarity of their situations difficult and attempt to dream it away using the lower form of the Eleven, the Two. If they do this, it will not be to their benefit and thus will create a more difficult cycle next year when they must learn to nurture without controlling. If you are a Four, it is best for you to check your words and seek wisdom in how you use them. Release any holds on others and begin the change to mastery of self. Five - Key Keepers • Key Keepers will find changes this year have to do with letting go of details and allowing nurturing to take hold. Depending on where one is on the path of awareness, this will activate differently. A Five, who needs all the details to feel secure, may have security removed in order to discover that others will be there for them and security may arrive in ways different than they imagined. Others who already have learned to ‘Let go and let God’ as they say, (a very rare group of Fives indeed) will be showered with loving gifts from others. Gifts can be anything from kind words and hugs to property, trips and money. The Key for Fives is let chips fall about them and absorb the experience, not asking so many questions but trusting in each experience. When we trust, we nurture ourselves at a very deep level because it is the unseen bond that holds all creation together. Trust is a lower form of love. Six – Butterflies • Butterflies will find great transformation this year as the Seven creates a Thirteen frequency and thus a Four frequency. Thirteen asks the Six to change from the non-committal networker, host, commentator, socializer to the one who mans the ship, directs the game, sets the rules and takes control of their actions … committing fully to whatever endeavor they take up this year. It can be a marriage year for the Six, or taking their next step in their career, or purchasing a home or other major commitment. This year will require ripping away the old façade and getting down to what is really wanted. The question of “Who am I?” must be answered in some form for the Six this year. They can no longer float but must find some stable ground to call their own. For some that will be stepping up another level in an already committed direction. For others it may be their first run at commitments. Either are challenging and by year’s end, a new Six emerges as they look in the mirror of their lives. Seven - Risk Takers • Risk Takers in their own Seven Year might think this would just increase their courage and motivate them forward; that is not what it does for them. Seven frequency on Seven activates Five and causes the Seven to stand at the top of the cliff and consider everything instead of jumping freely. This is a year of learning, gathering information, details, keys and creating the knowledge base that will lead to their next major choice next year. It is a year that slows the Seven down and they begin to invest in ways they have not before. Where they have been running, they may find they work instead on their health, security and physical world. Contracts, commitments, perseverance and focus are key for Seven’s this year. The Seven will be tested with details and thus may plunge into the world of worry if they forget the depth of their courage. Holding one’s sword quietly while listening is a good image to reflect upon. It is important to remember you are holding a sword and cut anything down you choose, but if you listen you may find there is nothing to cut, only to sign or speak.
This chart allows you to quickly access the number related to any letter. Thus you can identify what numbers are active through a name, or address. When looking at the chart, the letters listed below each number will activate that frequency and you can add them together to find the power of a word. For example, the name, Art. Look at the column with number one at the top. There you will find A, thus A=1, R is located in the 9 column, so R=9, and T is located in the 2 column, so T=2. Thus for Art we would add, 1+9+2=12, which when reduced = 3. Eight – Artist • Artists have choices and opportunities to socialize, network, connect and discover themselves through the eyes of others. This Seven year brings change to the Eight through a Six frequency. This is a wonderful combination for the Eight. In relationships, where they have let go of their needs to keep the peace, this year gives them the opportunity to give to themselves and enjoy in the pleasure of freely engaging in whatever they decide. It is a year when they realize they have the freedom to choose. Peace and contentment are the rewards of choices not under pressure or duress but under the guidance of one’s heart. It is this change that is offered the Eight this year. A most blessed one but, it requires releasing commitments that bound the Eights due to their own short-sightedness. To make a commitment to another that is harmful to oneself is considered null and void in the world of Spirit. We are Divine and any commitment made should fulfill both parties; this is the path of Divinity and love. Nine – Bridge • Bridges that are being woven to the seams of Creation, always experience directly whatever Frequency is active. The Nine will experience Seven’s frequency directly. They will experience motivation and change like a wind on a boat in the sea. It will be up to the Nine to take the oars and direct their dream to land. This year will offer excitement, movement, travel, and major changes. They will be obvious, but how the Nine moves with it will depend on many factors of consciousness on their part. It may call a Nine to come out of hiding and be seen. This is not always easy for Nine because they prefer to work quietly and do not like crowds or fame. But Seven may bring these things as it is like the Sun rising, sometimes it rises overhead shining on the Nine and other times it bursts from their hearts with a desire to do something they may have never had the courage to attempt before. It can be an exciting year if Nine does not hold back, or a highly challenging one if Nine refuses to open the gate and ride at a full gallop to the wind of their heart’s desire.
January
&
Its Frequencies January is: J (1) + a (1) + n (5) + u (3) + a (1) + r (9) + y (7) = 27 = 9 2014: 2 + 0 + 1 + 4 = 7 Total: 9 + 7 = 16 = 7 January’s frequency is Nine, making this a month when we have access to more information of the universe. It is as though the bridge between Heaven and Earth opens for the month and if we will slow down, we can take advantage of knowing more than we normally know. Information comes easily, we need only ask during January and then listen. The answers will arrive. When we add 2014’s Seven to the frequency, we receive information quickly, we are more open to change and will find change is happening around us. It is as though the ocean has come alive and now will sweep us to a new shore. Don’t resist, just go and you may find to your amazement that what you felt was right is right. This is the challenge for January 2014, to let go and allow the changes to sweep you forward without beating yourself up. Your guidance will speak to you and if you ignore it, you will not be happy and will find yourself trapped in space of self-sabotage. Then you are challenged by self-loathing and it is a downward spiral when it should be an upward one. Remember, you can change the course of your own river. Awareness offers choices and choices bring change. To fulfill this month’s energy of Nine and Seven, take time each day to listen to your inner voice, your feelings, your angst, aversion or immediate reaction or response to what is placed before you by word, image or action. Allow yourself to know and then the changes that activate will flow you over the next mountain peak to greater awareness and you will land in a place that enriches you with more of whatever you desire. •
The ancients believed there was a pole that held up the heavens, and that information was sent back and forth to heaven through this mighty pole.
•
In numerology, all numbers are added together and then reduced to a single digit, unless after adding them together the result is a number with double digits, such as: 11, 22, 33, 44, etc. These remain intact and are called Master Numbers.
•
Master numbers are all numbers that consist of replicating digits, such as 11, 22, 111, 222, 444,444, etc. Master numbers activate the originating frequency to a higher octave and thus empower the individual exponentially.
