We’ve written a lot recently about alternative grape varieties and better-value lookalikes to some of the most popular wines, so this would be a great place to start exploring.
Wine producers around the globe are continuing to sharpen their focus on the key issues that matter such as carbon footprint reduction, long-term sustainability and impact reduction on the environment. Aligned to this is a growing movement towards organic and biodynamic winemaking, especially in Europe where the EU continues to try to meet its ambitious targets for organic agriculture as a whole. We’ve highlighted our growing range of biodynamic, natural, organic and sustainable wines throughout our portfolio.
We look forward to working even closer with you over the months ahead and a heartfelt thank you for your continuing loyalty and business, we really do appreciate it.

ORG
ORGANIC WINE is wine made from grapes grown in accordance with principles of organic farming, which excludes the use of artificial chemical fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides.
The legal definition of organic wine varies from country to country. The primary difference in the way that organic wine is defined relates to the use (or non use) of preservatives, specifically sulphur (sulphur dioxide, sulphites, SO2) during the winemaking process.
BIODYNAMIC WINES are wines made employing the biodynamic methods both to grow the fruit and during the post-harvest processing.
Biodynamic wine production uses organic farming methods (e.g., employing compost as fertiliser and avoiding most pesticides) while also employing soil supplements prepared according to Rudolf Steiner's formulas, following a planting calendar that depends upon astrological configurations, and treating the earth as "a living and receptive organism."
SUST
SUSTAINABLE OR ETHICAL WINES. These are wines that are following a certain style of growing or embody a certain ethos. This could be carbon neutrality or the nature of which they treat their vineyards, soil & crops.
Many winemakers in this category will be practising organic and/or biodynamic practises but have not been certified or officially recognised due to a number of reasons. Some of which are the costs of the accreditation and means you get great tasting and ethical wines at a great price.
NATURAL WINE, as a category, has taken a number of years to try to define and in April 2020, the French finally made the first move.
Vin Méthode Nature was legally defined by the French organisation INAO in recognition of wines that are made from hand-picked, organic-certified grapes, displaying a recognised certifying body’s logo. They must ferment spontaneously with yeasts found naturally in the vineyard and/or winery, and cannot have anything else added, other than a very strictly limited quantity of sulphites, or removed, so that means no fining or filtration. The only other human intervention that’s allowed is cooling, to help to keep the wines stable. Other countries are set to adopt similar schemes.
VEGETARIAN FRIENDLY WINES
Fining agents vary from isinglass and gelatine to casein and egg albumen. Any wine fined using casein (derived from milk) or egg albumen are therefore suitable for vegetarians – but not for vegans. Whilst almost no wine contains any animal-based products, many are ‘fined’ with animal ingredients when they are being produced.
VEGAN FRIENDLY WINES
Are wines made without animal products, so winemakers either leave the particles to sink naturally to the bottom of the wine, or use non-animal fining products usually bentonite, a form of clay or pea protein

This South American powerhouse goes from strength to strength and the pandemic actually helped to consolidate their all-important export markets, of which the UK is a key player. The industry trade organisation, Wines of Argentina, have been working hard over the past year to promote women from all levels and roles within the industry to create better sustainability and equality which is to be applauded.
Malbec is still very much the driving force here but producers are keen to get away from their over dependence on one single variety and are making a greater effort with alternatives, especially whites, as well as their indigenous Criolla varieties. Cabernet Franc, for example, is another grape that’s one to watch and we’ve added a stunning example from Los Haroldos with their Reserve Limited Edition.
PATAGONIA
Other alternative varieties being added to our range are an Organic Pinot Gris from Piedra Negra in the Uco Valley, a Semillon under the Los Poetas label from Karim Mussi also in the Uco and a Patagonian Pinot Noir under the Verum label from Bodega Del Rio Elorza. At the top end, we’re also adding Los Haroldos’ Gran Corte, a blockbuster red blend of no less than 7 grape varieties. It’s a real stunner!

The UK’s love affair with Aussie wines continues with gusto and whilst 85% are still shipped to the UK in bulk, mainly destined for the off-trade, there’s growing interest from consumers in the on-trade to move up the quality ladder. This means greater focus should be given to regionality, alternative grape varieties and more sustainable winemaking practices.
There’s a growing band of boutique producers who are championing the lesser-known grape varieties as well as old heritage grapes like Grenache and Mataro. These latter two grapes in particular have long been neglected by the major players who continue to churn out industrial volumes of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon to satisfy global demand.
Thistledown and their sister company Wild & Wilder, based in the Adelaide Hills, are part of this new wave of specialist producers. Motivated by ancient vineyard plots, they work responsibly and sustainably with multigenerational grape farmers across the McLaren Vale, Barossa, Langhorne Creek and even the Riverland to produce an exciting range of lower-intervention wines that are vibrant, fresh and speak proudly of their place.
Even larger family producers like McPherson in Victoria are working with a ‘small batch’ mentality, making distinctive wines like the delicious Aquarius Marsanne Viognier. The common thread that tie all these wines together are their food-friendliness and their innate drinkability.

The world’s narrowest country continues to offer a quality to value ratio that is difficult to beat when looking for single varietal wines, and that doesn’t just mean at the everyday drinking level. Influences from both the mountains and the Pacific coast help offer one of the most diverse ranges of terroir in the world and winemakers have started to really push the boundaries focusing more and more on extreme viticulture and single site expression.
The new Single Vineyard Pinot Noir from Ventopuro and the Foye Moscatel from Bouchon Family Wines both reinforce this with the former coming from the cool Casablanca valley and the latter from an ancient 100-year-old vineyard in the southerly Itata valley, one of Chile’s oldest wine regions. The Pinot is concentrated, energetic and refined while the Moscatel is fragrant, juicy and seriously food-friendly.
For the ultimate cool-climate expressions, head to the San Antonio valley where wines like the outstanding Casa Marin Sauvignon Blanc and our longstanding favourite Santa Macarena ‘Single Vineyard Pinot Noir’ are produced within just a few kilometres of the Pacific Ocean and the cooling influences of the Humboldt Current. Both wines are prime examples of Chile’s progressive spirit.

PARIS
After witnessing one of the smallest harvests on record in 2021, France has faced its fair share of challenges this year, especially in key areas like Champagne, Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Languedoc. Parts of Provence had to contend with natural wild fires but actually fared much better overall than the other regions, a relief as rosé sales are still growing at a rate of knots!
With crises come opportunities and France has plenty of resources and winemaking expertise to find solutions to these potential shortfalls. Crémant is a prime example. France’s alternative traditional-method fizz is already gaining a following and the Crémant de Loire from Domaine des Baumard is about as good as it gets.
A new generation of young winemakers are breaking ranks and pushing back against the rigid AOC rules by making the kind of wines that they and their generation want to drink; super fresh, light, vibrant and juicy. The quirky Uva Non Grata Gamay is a case in point and well worth a punt if you have a younger crowd.
If you’re looking for something innovative, the cool guys at NiCE (they’re British) have been putting French Sauvignon and Grenache rosé into cans which make a great single-serve option with a difference. There’s going to be a lot of discussions about packaging across the wine industry over the next few years, especially with the well-publicised glass shortages and price hikes that have affected the global drinks industry this year. Embrace wine in cans as they’re here to stay.

Demand for Italian Pinot Grigio and Prosecco continues to dominate this country’s output but with over 500 unique grape varieties, there’s so much more to be discovered here. From top to bottom, heel to toe and even across the islands, there are an almost endless number of wines worth seeking out like the white Calvese Falanghina and red Archivio Aglianico from Campania plus the Mora & Memo Vermentino from Sardinia.
Unlike the rest of Europe, Italy’s food culture evolved around their regional wines and so they all have a natural affinity with food, making them ideal for the on-trade. Whether it’s crisp, fragrant whites from Piedmont or Abruzzo, delicately fruity rosés from Veneto, or smooth hearty reds from practically everywhere, we urge you to try something different as consumers are happy to experiment with new wine styles as well as to trade up on price.
For the more environmentally conscious, there are plenty of organic Italian wines to go at such as the delicious and rather classy Novapalma Pinot Grigio, the fun Da Vero Nero d’Avola Biologico and the brilliant Fabrizio Vella range from Sicily. And not forgetting the rather cool Ceradello Organic Prosecco too!

After the challenges of 2021s short harvest, New Zealand’s producers are breathing a sigh of relief now that the ’22 harvest is in and there should be enough to go around. This means the Sauvignon taps should be turned on fully again as we head towards the back end of the year. In the meantime, we can continue enjoying the outstanding quality of the ’21 vintage which, despite the shortfall, produced incredible levels of concentration and definition in the wines.
Alongside our old favourites we’ve added a new Sauvignon Blanc from legendary Marlborough winemaker Ant Moore. Having found fame at Isabel Estate and subsequently building successful brands from his own vineyard blocks across the Marlborough region, he created his own range of distinctly individual wines.
The Signature Series Sauvignon Blanc includes a barrel-fermented component, plenty of lees contact and minimal sulphur additions producing a wine with huge flavour intensity, a rich mouthfeel and balanced by finely-chiselled acidity.
It’s always easy to overlook the fact that New Zealand are making fantastic wines from grape varieties other than Sauvignon. If you’re looking for a richly fruited white that’s slightly off-dry and pairs brilliantly with spicy, Asian-influenced dishes then you have to try the Stoney Range Pinot Gris from Sherwood Estate in Waipara. It’s an absolute belter!

IN NOVEMBER 2020 A SEVERE FROST PROVED CALAMITOUS TO THE YOUNG BUDS, FOLLOWED BY FLAILING HAIL AND THEN MAJOR DROUGHT IN THE THREE MONTHS PRIOR TO THE 2021 HARVEST
Much of this inclemency is down to the clouds than define New Zealand’s climate and, after all, its Maori name. A fleeting hail storm can wreak havoc in a vineyard, just as the absence of clouds will assist frost in cold climes and lead to drought in summer. We celebrate those cruel, fecund, damning and wine-defining weightless gods-above in Passing Giants, our new pair of organic wines from Marlborough.

Following a painful period domestically during the worst of the pandemic, the South African wine industry has made it through to the other side and are looking forward positively. Latest reports confirm that this year’s harvest is quite a bit smaller than 2021 but the quality is outstanding. The past 6 years has seen a swing away from planting of more red varieties with a greater focus on whites instead.
While the so-called noble varieties like Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz have been steadily increasing, there’s a movement by both experienced and younger conscientious winemakers to champion South Africa’s heritage varieties like Chenin Blanc and Cinsault as well as new varieties that are bettersuited to specific sites and micro-climates.
Bruwer Raats is one such veteran winemaker who’s making stunning Chenins and Cabernet Francs in the more elevated zones of Stellenbosch and he also has a hand in a delicious, light, but expressive Old Vine Cinsault too under the B Vintners label. Tiny yields come off this 70-year-old vineyard making a gorgeous wine.
Continuing the theme of Cinsault, look out for the recently added Percheron Old Vine Cinsault which comes off a 40-year-old block and is juicy and gamey. We’ve also added a new range of single varietals under the contemporary Afrikan Ridge label which come from the productive Breede River Valley along with an elegant Gewurztraminer from Bergsig Estate in the same region.

There’s never been so much innovation and dynamism among Spanish wine producers from improved sustainability and winemaking practices, through resurrecting long-forgotten vineyards and native grapes through to the design of ultra-modern packaging and labelling. With 70 wine producing regions throughout the country, there’s a huge diversity of wine styles that cover sparkling, still and fortified wines.
We’ve added a decent splash of new wines alongside our long-standing favourites such as a delicious white and young red Rioja from the award-winning Eguren Ugarte bodega, a range of modern, fruit-led wines from Finca Constancia in La Mancha and selected some great value individual examples from Rias Baixas, Catalonia, Priorat and Andalucía too.
There’s also plenty of organic and natural wines to check out, including a Macabeo and Bobal Tempranillo blend in 10 litre bag-in-boxes. Bodegas Sumarroca make a beautiful cava that is now organic certified and Bodegas Bernabeleva, up in the fashionable Gredos Mountains close to Madrid, are making stunning natural wines with the perfect balance between minerality and fruit purity that are absolutely delicious!

Meet VictorTHE YOUNG KING OF RIOJ-AN-ROLL
IF THERE’S ONE SPANISH WINE THAT’S INSTANTLY RECOGNISABLE, WHEREVER YOU ARE IN THE WORLD, IT’S RIOJA. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST WINES THAT MADE A BIG IMPRESSION ON ME AS A 20-SOMETHING WHILE CUTTING MY TEETH IN WINE RETAILING.
You could say it’s made an even bigger impression on Victor Fernández de Manzanos, the young CEO and joint owner of Manzanos Wines. The difference is that Victor, along with his younger brother David, was born with Rioja in his blood!
It’s hard to believe he took over the running of the family business in 2010 after his father tragically and unexpectedly passed away. Victor was only part-way through his business degree in London, so you can only imagine the pressure this put on his young shoulders at that time.
When we met Victor our first impression was that he was surprisingly mature and focused, but also very approachable and willing to listen and learn too. He wasn’t afraid to do things differently either and we're sure this has helped him and his young team to accomplish so much in such a short space of time.
Today, Victor is supported not only by his brother David but also by his charming wife Laura and collectively, they’re a real tour de force.

There’s a growing dynamism within the sparkling wine category as Champagne prices continue to push upwards, forcing less affluent consumers to consider other alternatives. A catastrophic 2021 harvest in Champagne has exacerbated the pricing issue and English Sparkling wine, in particular, is benefitting as a result. That said, Champagne demand is still strong and we’re fortunate to have good relationships with all the major houses ensuring continuity of supply.
We’re seeing growing demand for the award-winning range of English sparklers from Chapel Down in Kent, especially the Rosé Brut which picked up a Decanter Platinum award last year. For a truly authentic taste of England, try Gloucestershire’s Three Choirs Classic Cuvée which blends Seyval Blanc, Phoenix and Pinot Noir making a supremely refreshing fizz.
Prosecco Rosé has helped to consolidate Prosecco’s dominance in the sparkling wine category on the back of the surge in interest of pinks generally and we have plenty of options here covering all price points and quality levels.
Cava continues to make a long overdue comeback and the updating of rules at the start of 2022 are helping Cava’s quality image. For value, try out our recently added Castell Llord Brut or for top tier examples under the new Cava de Guarda Superior designation, and with a more Champagne-like profile, try either the Sumarroca Organic Brut Reserva or the stunningly packaged Vilarnau Organic Brut Reserva.
BY THE BUBBLES?Are you baffled
KNOW YOUR PROSECCO FROM CRÉMANT OR YOUR CAVA FROM CHAMPAGNE? EVEN THOUGH SPARKLING WINES MAKE UP A SMALL PART OF MOST WINE LISTS, IT’S WORTH TAKING THE TIME TO LEARN THE FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM AND WHY CONSUMERS ARE BEING TURNED ONTO MORE THAN JUST PROSECCO AND CHAMPAGNE.
A good carb?
LET’S START WITH THE BUBBLES
Most sparkling wines go through two fermentations. The first turns the grape juice into wine by converting the sugars into alcohol. The second produces the bubbles (carbon dioxide) as the wine is inside an enclosed vessel so that the CO2 can’t escape. The other method, only used occasionally, is carbonation where CO2 is literally injected into the wine inside an enclosed tank and then bottled.
The Traditional Method
When the second fermentation occurs in the bottle, this is referred to as the Traditional Method. The bottled pressure is higher, between 51/2 - 6 atmospheres, and the bubbles are smaller and last longer in the glass. This method is used throughout Champagne as well as in the production of Cava, Crémant and many English Sparkling wines too.
The Charmat Method
If the second fermentation is carried out in tank, this is known as the Charmat method. The bubbles are slightly bigger and create a pressure of around 41/2 - 5 atmospheres when the wine is bottled. This is how all Spumante Prosecco is made.
If making sparkling wine using the carbonation method, the result gives a lower pressure (around 3 atmospheres) so larger bubbles that dissipate faster. Think carbonated soft drinks. Many of these are slightly lower in alcohol too and a touch sweeter like Chapel Down’s Sparkling Bacchus.
BREAKING DOWN THE BUBBLES
SO WE GET THAT CARB IS GOOD, BUT WHAT ELSE DIFFERENTIATES THEM
Apart from their colour, level of dryness and, for Traditional Method fizzes, their period of ageing, the other key difference is down to the grape varieties used.
Champagne and many English sparklers are based on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and can either be a blend or made from one single grape.
Similarly, most Cava is based on Parellada, Macabeu and Xarel-lo and will be a blend of two or three varieties.
As Crémant can be made virtually all over France, grape varieties vary significantly from region to region. For example, the Loire features Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc amongst others, while in Alsace it’s Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Pinot Gris.
Prosecco uses predominantly Glera and also allows a percentage of Pinot Noir to make rosés.
As consumers continue to trade up and experiment more, it’s a good time to introduce one or two alternatives and maybe even increase your offering.

In our continuing quest to find wines off the beaten track, we have a number of highlights to bring to your attention. We’re adding two brand new wines from Austria under the funky ‘Funkstille’ label with a well-priced Grüner Veltliner and Zweigelt. The Grüner is less green in profile showing more yellow-skinned fruits while the Zweigelt is soft, juicy and extremely gluggable.
We’ve also recently brought in a brilliant little range of Greek wines from Domaine Papagiannakos to the east of Athens. There’s a citrus and nicely-textured Assyrtiko with subtle salinity and a floral, stone-fruited Malagouzia in the whites and the Erythros, a blend of Agiorgitiko and Cabernet Sauvignon, is fast becoming a team favourite!
As for the rest, check out the ridiculously good-value natural wines from Romania under the Solara label, the delicious Vinho Verde rosé from Vale do Homem and the unique whites from Château Mercian in Japan.
We’ll let you know as soon as we find any other interesting gems.

BACK IN 1988, THREE FAMILIES DECIDED TO INVEST IN A WINERY IN ROMANIA, STARTING WITH 650 HECTARES OF SLIGHTLY UNLOVED VINEYARDS AND A RUSTY, ONCE STATE-OWNED WINERY.
Yet Englishman Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira, have turned the Cramele Recas Estate into the most successful winery in Romania. Recas are now recognised globally for their impressive scale and breadth of fascinating wines, including natural and orange wine from organic grapes. Despite the scale the emphasis is on making good wines that over-deliver, and as a result they’ve struck on a magic formula that has seen sales and demand boom. Vineyards are a combination of evolved plantings from 1447 and more recent planting, whilst the winery has seen significant investment and boasts state of the art facilities where innovation thrives. Recas are in every way a modern, dynamic winery, whose open minded approach and quality sets them apart … a winery you really can’t ignore.
