2011 Centenary of the Royal Australian Navy Coin & Badge On 1 March 1901, exactly two months after the Federation of Australia, responsibility for the former colonies’ naval forces passed to the new Commonwealth Government, setting in train developments resulting in the emergence of the Royal Australian Navy in 1911. To mark the centenary the Perth Mint has produced this superb Silver Proof $1. The coin’s reverse is inscribed with ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY 100 YEARS 1911 - 2011. The design comprises images representing sailors from the early days of the Royal Australian Navy; HMAS Yarra, the River Class Torpedo Boat Destroyer commissioned in 1910; and the modern warship HMAS Anzac, the third Royal Australian Navy ship to carry the legendary name. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. Just 7,500 of these coin and badge sets will be released.

25th Anniversary of the Australian Gold Nugget Series For more than two decades, the proof issue of the Australian Nugget was synonymous with rarity, appeal, innovation and collectability. The magnificent 2011dated release maintains these traditions by recreating the original gold nugget design, created by Stuart Devlin OA CMG and commissioned by The Perth Mint in 1986. The design references the ‘Welcome Stranger’ nugget, believed to be the biggest recorded gold nugget ever found. It weighed 2,284 ounces and was found in 1869, in Moliagul, Victoria. Prospectors, John Deason and Richard Oates, originally from Cornwall, England, found the nugget only 2 inches (7.5 centimetres) below the surface, near the root of a tree. The 25th Anniversary of Australia’s Official Gold Coin Program 1oz Gold Proof Coin is presented in a prestigious presentation case with timber lid and coloured shipper. Only 1,500 coins will be issued.

Coinage of the Ancient Parthians The Parthian Empire ruled ancient Persia from around 247BC to AD228. They defeated Alexander the Great’s successors, the Seleucids, conquering most of the middle east and southwest asia. The empire reached its apogee during the reign of Mithridates II 123-88BC and it was during his reign that the legendary trade route known as the silk road was established. From the first century BC struggles against the Roman Empire and nomads weakened the Parthians and the empire finally fractured in the third century AD. We offer an interesting selection of ancient Parthian coins.

2011 Silver Proof Ram’s Head $1 with ‘C’ Mintmark Along with the bounding kangaroo on the Halfpenny and Penny, the Ram’s Head reverse design from the silver predecimal shilling could be considered Australia’s most iconic coin design. The design was used from 1938 until the last issue in 1963. The original design was modelled on a grand champion Merino from the annual Sydney Sheep show in 1932. This ram was considered to be unmatched in the position of its head and horns. Named Uardry 0.1 after its home station, it became known as the ‘Shilling Ram’ and represented Australia’s growing wool industry. The dignified Merino ram represents Australia’s reliance on primary industry through its economic history. The Royal Australia Mint’s Silver Proof $1 for 2011 features this classic design as it appeared on the shilling. The coin is presented in a plush case with coloured outer box featuring a candy striped theme reminiscent of the shearer’s clothing featured in the famous 1890 Tom Roberts painting ‘Shearing the Rams’. Only 12,500 coins will be struck.

The 1921 Hoard It was almost a century ago that a group of Australian coins were hidden away in a tin. These coins included a range of early Australian Silver - those issued in the first ten or twelve years of production. The cache was discovered a couple of year ago and found to contain a selection of high grade pieces prompting the discoverers to label it the “1921 Hoard” after the youngest coins in the hoard. Not surprisingly the most recent coins were typically the highest grade having been in circulation for little or no time. We have selected the finest 1921 Threepences and Sixpences from the hoard to offer to Money Matters readers at well below catalogue value.

2011 Australian Cattle Dog Focusing on five intelligent working dog breeds, this exciting Working Dogs program portrays these unpaid, unsung heroes of the Australian labour force – our four-legged, big-hearted workers. Broken Hill Silver Mining Share Certificate c.1903 Broken Hill, known as the silver city, is located in the far west of outback NSW. In 1883 silver was discovered by boundary rider Charles Rasp and it was soon noted to be one of the world’s largest silver-lead-zinc mineral deposits. Elvis Presley The King Lives! Singer, actor, soldier there have been few performers with the charisma of Elvis. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1935, Elvis began his career in 1954 at Sun Records. Managed by Colonel Tom Parker he released many number one singles including Heartbreak Hotel, All Shook Up, Love me Tender and Suspicious Minds and starred in popular movies such as Roustabout, GI Blues and Blue Hawaii. This Collection captures Elvis at many stages of his brilliant career.

Marilyn Monroe A cultural icon, Marilyn was born Norma Jean Mortenson in 1926. From modelling her career in film exploded with such classics as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire and The Seven Year Itch. And who can forget that rendition of Happy Birthday sung to JFK? The circumstances of her death have always been the subject of conjecture. Was it murder or suicide, or just an unfortunate accident?

John Wayne Few actors have epitomised rugged masculinity like John Wayne. His distinctive voice, swagger and height made him a western film star. Wayne won an Academy Award for True Grit but will also be remembered for The Man who Shot Liberty Valance, The High and Mighty and The Searcher amongst a long list of stellar performances.

20

In 1999 the American Film Institute named Wayne 13th amongst the Greatest Male Stars of All Time.

Coin Sets from the USA Gone With The Wind Gone with the Wind is a 1939 American epic romance-drama film adapted from Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel of the same name. The film, set in the Old South in and around the time of the American Civil War, stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland, and Hattie McDaniel. It tells a story of the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era from a white, Southern point of view. It received ten Academy Awards (8 competitive, 2 honorary), a record that stood for twenty years.

John F Kennedy JFK was the 35th President of the USA. After serving as the commander of a Torpedo Boat in WWII Kennedy began his meteoric rise to the top echelon of politics. He defeated Nixon in the 1960 Presidential election making him, at 43, the youngest ever President. His tenure included the Cuban Missile Crisis and the development of the US Space Program. Together with wife Jacqui Kennedy they attained “movie star status. His assassination in 1963 has long been the subject of conspiracy theories.

Ronald Reagan The movie star President. After appearing in over fifty movie productions Reagan used his public persona to launch his political career. He became governor of California in 1966 and won the US Presidential election in 1980. As president, he implemented sweeping new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed "Reaganomics," advocated controlling the money supply to reduce inflation, and spurring economic growth by reducing tax rates, government regulation of the economy, and government spending.

1990 Anzac Presentation Set to Gallipoli Veteran Lance Corporal George Salter George Frederick Salter, a farmer, enlisted on 24 January 1916. He was a member of 44th Battalion, C Company which embarked from Fremantle on 6 June 1916 for Gallipoli. Salter was twice wounded but managed to survive the war and returned to Australia on 1 July 1919. This remarkable and important collection to a surviving wounded Anzac includes: 1990 Anzac 2-Coin Presentation Proof Set in Metal Case. Struck by the Royal Australian Mint in 1990 and presented to surviving ANZACS. Records show a mintage of 3,061 but based on how infrequently the set comes onto the market we suspect the actual number issued could be somewhat less than that. Letter from Prime Minister Bob Hawke to surviving ANZACS, still in original envelope Original Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force Certificate of Discharge for George Frederick Salter. Issued at Perth Photo of George Salter in uniform Personal exercise book dated 17.7.17. With text and diagrams written and personally drawn by Salter. This is a superb and unique item of WWI memorabilia. There are something like 100 pages of text and drawings (high quality!) related to his work as a signaller. (We show just a couple of pages to show the interesting wartime work). A one-off museum quality Collection.

New Zealand Uncut Notes Uncut notes enjoyed tremendous popularity 20 years ago but the market quietened and most countries halted production. Today, demand for these Uncuts is strong and like Australia, New Zealand issued a great range for collectors which are now being sought worldwide. We present a selection from stock. All feature the signature of Donald Brash as Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and are presented in Reserve Bank Folder of Issue. Quantities are limited so do act quickly.
