2011 Treasures of Australia Gold and Silver PEARL Locket Coins ‘Treasures of Australia’ is a beautiful series featuring locket coins celebrating Australia’s abundance of natural riches. Struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver and 1oz of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality, the 2011 release features an authentic keshi pearl. The Kimberley town of Broome became the home of Australia’s oyster fishing industry in the 19th century. Today it is renowned for ‘cultured’ South Sea pearls, the most soughtafter in the world. Oysters create natural pearls by depositing layers of nacre over a grain of sand or other ‘intruder’ that settles inside their shell. Cultured pearls develop around a bead implanted by human hand. A traditional bridal gift, pearl is also the modern birthstone of people born in June. The coin’s reverse portrays an abstract interpretation of Australia’s marine environment, one of the world’s richest sources of South Sea pearls. The coin also incorporates a transparent locket inlaid with mother of pearl framing a keshi pearl. The obverse of each coin shows the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination. The reverses show an abstract interpretation of Australia’s stark and beautiful landscape. The design surrounds a transparent half-circle capsule containing the gold granules! Only 1,000 Gold Proofs and 7,500 Silver Proofs will be issued. We offer both coins at the Official Mint Issue Prices.

The first coin in the series features the Narrows Bridge in Perth. Uniting Perth’s north and south, the Narrows Bridge was the largest precast, prestressed concrete bridge when built in 1959. Originally a six lane road bridge, it now carries twelve lanes and the Southern Suburbs railway line. 2010 Coin Fair Silver Proof $ The 100 Years of Australian Coinage was a successful theme for the Royal Australian Mint. Of particular note were mintmarked Silver Proof Dollars released at the ANDA Coin Fairs throughout the year. The maximum mintage for each coin was 2,000 although we believe that actual number of coins released is, in some cases, well below that. 2011 Anzac Day $1 Coin Preserving the knowledge of wartime sacrifices made by members of our nation’s Defence Force is important to each new generation of Australians, as the number of people attending ANZAC Day ceremonies testifies. This tribute to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the worthy men and women who underpin it, reflects the true spirit of the ANZACS. The design on this uncirculated $1 coin portrays two pilots wearing flight equipment. The background depicts a silhouetted bugler, the inscription ‘Lest We Forget’ and the date of ANZAC Day – April 25 – a day on which we honour all those who gave their lives in the service of their country. Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2011 year-date. Calico Jack Pirate Dollar Since the first release of the $1 Blackbeard Coin, this seafaring series on pirates has proved popular plunder for young collectors. John Rackham (Calico Jack) was born in England in 1682 and was a moderately successful pirate in the Caribbean, whose alias reflected his fondness for striped calico breeches. Charming and goodlooking, Rackham is most remembered for the design of his Jolly Roger flag – a skull with crossed swords. He is also known for having two female crew members, Mary Read and Anne Bonny, which was unusual at that time. When Rackham’s ship was captured, the female pirates fought to the last, while their drunken shipmates surrendered feebly. Tried in Jamaica in 1720, Rackham and his men were hanged and posted in gibbets.

2011 Australia Remembers - War Historians 20 Cents The Australia Remembers series recognises those who made history beyond the battlefields. In 2011 it celebrates Australian war correspondents that have shaped our perception of conflicts since the Boer War. C.E.W. Bean, chronicler of Gallipoli and founder of the Australian War Memorial; and Damien Parer, whose memorable images from the Kokoda track preceded his death in the line of duty; exemplify an honourable occupation distinguished by bravery and integrity. Based on an image from the Australian War Memorial of an Australian official photographer, standing with tripod and camera on a British Mark V tank, the advance of Australian troops through the Hindenburg Line is recorded. The coin is presented in the same card format as the Australian Service Nurses and Lost Soldiers of Fromelles coins. There is a brief description of the work done by these brave Australians and the contribution they made to Australian war history on the card.

$6.95

2009 Australian Service Nurses 20 Cents Coin One in the Australia Remembers Series pays tribute to Australian Service Nurses. The 20 cent coin design perfectly captures a nurse in her personal effort to bring comfort and assistance to a wounded “Aussie Digger, whilst upholding the highest traditions of the nursing fraternity. Presented in an illustrated holder.

$16.95

2010 Lost Soldiers of Fromelles 20 Cents The second coin in the series commemorates the Lost Soldiers of Fromelles. Known as Australia’s bloodiest day, during the 1916 Battle of Fromelles the 5th Division suffered 5533 casualties. There was speculation for many years regarding the existence of an unmarked and forgotten mass grave near Fromelles, containing the remains of Allied soldiers killed during the battle and subsequently buried by the Germans. The 20 Cent coin design is based on the Cobbers Statue which stands in Fromelles. Presented in an illustrated holder.

2011 1/10 Ounce Silver Koala From one of Australia’s favourite series, the new Australian Koala 1/10oz silver bullion coin portrays this year’s delightful koala design. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1/10oz of 99.9% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the undisputed guarantee of its weight and purity. The reverse design depicts a charming image of an adult koala and juvenile resting in the fork of a eucalyptus tree. Delicate frosting has been introduced on the table of this year's coin, a subtle addition that enhances the shiny koala design. These coins are housed in a beautifully illustrated presentation card. The 2011 Silver Koala is struck on a ‘mint-to-order’ basis only.

$15.00 Great Composers: Liszt 1811-1886 In 1842 ‘Lisztomania’ swept across Europe. Women fought over his silk handkerchiefs and men wept openly at his piano concerts. He was praised for his brilliance, strength and precision with his concerts likened to ecstatic experiences. Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) is considered perhaps the greatest pianist of all time. He was also an important composer, teacher and inventor of the symphonic poem. As Liszt grew older he became increasingly plagued by feelings of desolation and despair; “I carry a deep sadness of the heart which must now break out into sound.”

Famous Naval Battles The Battle of Midway 1942 Strong interest has been shown in this final Famous Naval Battles coin. After Pearl Harbor, the Imperial Japanese Navy aimed to inflict another defeat on the United States. This time it intended to take the US base on Midway Atoll with a strike force supported by four aircraft carriers, while the main body of its naval force lay in wait for the arrival of the depleted American Fleet. Thanks to US intelligence, however, Admiral Nimitz possessed details of Admiral Yamamoto’s plan. On 4 June 1942, Japan’s strike force suddenly learned of the approaching US Fleet. Distracted with refuelling and redeploying aircraft, the Japanese carriers were attacked by US divebombers. All four Japanese carriers were sunk and the USS Yorktown was also a casualty. Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of the Cook Islands and struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, no more than 5,000 of each coin in the Famous Naval Battles in History series will be released. 25th Anniversary of the Australian Gold Nugget Series For more than two decades, the proof issue of the Australian Nugget was synonymous with rarity, appeal, innovation and collectability. The magnificent 2011dated release maintains these traditions by recreating the original gold nugget design, created by Stuart Devlin OA CMG and commissioned by The Perth Mint in 1986. The design references the ‘Welcome Stranger’ nugget, believed to be the biggest recorded gold nugget ever found. It weighed 2,284 ounces and was found in 1869, in Moliagul, Victoria. Prospectors, John Deason and Richard Oates, originally from Cornwall, England, found the nugget only 2 inches (7.5 centimetres) below the surface, near the root of a tree. The 25th Anniversary of Australia’s Official Gold Coin Program 1oz Gold Proof Coin is presented in a prestigious presentation case with timber lid and coloured shipper. Superb 1894 Melbourne Sovereigns The Veiled Head portrait of Queen Victoria was introduced in 1893 to replace the Jubilee design which had been used since 1887. The design shows an older Queen Victoria with a veil replacing the crown. This design was used from 1893 until her death in 1901. Struck at the Melbourne Mint these coins show an M for Melbourne mintmark above the date. Also taken from an original roll these Veiled Head Sovereigns from the Melbourne Mint would form an exceptional pair with the 1892 Jubilee Head coins below.

Superb 1892 Melbourne Jubilee Head Sovereigns From an Original Bank Roll For over a century these Australian Sovereigns sat undisturbed in the vaults of a Swiss Bank. Struck at the Melbourne Mint in 1892 these Gold Victorian Sovereigns probably never saw the light of day. From soon after their day of production until their recent “rediscovery these coins sat, still in an original paper roll, in the dark, cold confines of a most venerable institution. As such they have survived in remarkable condition, lovely Uncirculated with full original mint bloom! We have seldom seen finer! Each coin shows the Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria, who had celebrated her Jubilee in 1887 with a new portrait design featuring a tall crown. The reverse shows the classic St George and Dragon design by Pistrucci that graced Australian Sovereigns until the final issue in 1931. Above the date is the M for Melbourne Mintmark that distinguishes these coins from the standard British Issue. We rarely see Jubilee Head Sovereigns this grade so to obtain an original roll is truly special. We suggest you act quickly! Each coin is presented in a colour descriptive card. To mark the centenary the Perth Mint has produced this superb Silver Proof $1. The coin’s reverse is inscribed with ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY 100 YEARS 1911 - 2011. The design comprises images representing sailors from the early days of the Royal Australian Navy; HMAS Yarra, the River Class Torpedo Boat Destroyer commissioned in 1910; and the modern warship HMAS Anzac, the third Royal Australian Navy ship to carry the legendary name. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. The Rare 1922/1 Overdate Threepence Which Australian Predecimal Coin is rarer than the 1930 Penny, yet costs a third of the price? The answer is the 1922/1 Overdate Threepence.

Overdates come about when a die is re-engraved with a new date and the old date is not completely obliterated. In the Australian Predecimal series this happened on a very small number of occasions with the most famous, and rarest, of the overdates being the 1922/1 overdate Threepence. This issue we take pleasure in presenting three examples. The 2011 Pocket Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes by McDonald catalogues this coin at VG $10,000.00, Fine $24,000.00 (up substantially from 2010). You can save thousands!

lian Coinage History

cimal Collections It was not until 1910, some nine years after Federation, that the Commonwealth of Australia issued its first coins. Silver coins struck at the London Mint were followed the next year by bronze Pennies and Halfpennies. From that date, until the end of Predecimal coinage in 1964, most dates of each denomination from Halfpenny to Florin were struck. Assembling a Complete Collection of Australian Predecimal Coins is the desire of many Australians. Doing so coin by coin can take huge amounts of time and is usually quite expensive. Surprisingly, the most efficient and affordable way is to buy ready-made Collections (let someone else do the work!).

The Blue and Grey Tenners Collection The first Australian $10 Polymer note featuring Mary Gilmore and Banjo Patterson was released in 1993. The dark blue ink used for the main print had a tendency to transfer to other notes that it came into contact with. To solve the problem Note Printing Australia experimented with varying shades of blue finally selecting the colour we see today. From mid 1994 the main print was changed to a lighter blue and the portrait of Mary Gilmore was altered to grey.

The Blue and Grey Tenners combines the old and new $10 Note varieties. It contains 4 Australian $10 Notes; the first two notes are examples of the original Blue Issue. These two notes have identical serial numbers and consecutive prefixes. The shadow “10 that resulted from the ink transfer can clearly be seen at the top left of these notes. Accompanying these are a Pair of Grey $10 Notes. These notes also feature matching serial numbers and consecutive prefixes. In fact, these 2 Grey notes have the same serial numbers as the Blue Issues in the folder! An extremely difficult combination to assemble. Only 2,000 Folders were issued and each is individually serial numbered on the front. Catalogues at $245.00 in McDonalds. Limited!

WWII Hay Internment Camp Notes Following the evacuation of Dunkirk, British authorities became paranoid about the possibilities of spies on homesoil. In July 1940, thousands of these unfortunate men were shipped to Australia aboard the ship Dunera. In September 1941 the ship unloaded its human cargo in Sydney where they were bundled into a train for the 30 hour trip to Hay. As Australian currency was forbidden in the Hay Internment Camp the ingenious internees designed their own currency which was printed by the local newspaper the Riverine Grazier. Notes in the denominations Sixpence, Shilling and Two Shillings were produced from designs prepared by Georg Telscher, who had contributed to Austrian note designs in the 1930's.

The cunning designs incorporated a number of hidden messages. In the barbed wire around the edge of the note can be read "We are here because we are here". In the barbed wire at the foot of the fencing can be read "HMT (His Majesty's Troop Ship) Dunera, Liverpool to Hay". Woven into the fleece of the sheep on the back of the note are the names of some of the internees. It has also been suggested that the barbed wire behind the Coat of Arms hides a message in morse code! The notes only circulated for about three months in 1941 before a Sydney newspaper published a picture which alerted Commonwealth authorities who promptly stepped in and initiated the withdrawal of the issue as it contravened Australia’s currency legislation. Only a small number of these historic notes, souvenired by the inmates, have survived.

Mendel-Stahl Sixpence There are three signature combinations for each denomination. Rarity varies but in the case of the Sixpence Mendel-Stahl is the most affordable. Catalogues VF $13,500.00, EF $17,000.00. A superior example.

The 1910 Superscribed Pound Australia’s First Banknote Federation in 1901 gave the Commonwealth Government the power and opportunity to produce the first Australian note issues. Numerous proposals were put forward and debated and in late 1910 the Australian Notes Act was passed. The Government was anxious that the legislation should take effect immediately and a new branch of the Treasury was formed to handle printing. However, the problem was that considerable time would be required to obtain sufficient banknote paper, engrave printing plates then print and number the notes. To implement the Act and more importantly issue an Australian Currency that could circulate freely in all states, the Government purchased unused notes from the private banks, and overprinted them ‘AUSTRALIAN NOTE’ and a promise to pay the bearer in gold on demand. Such notes became known as superscribed notes and were issued until the new printing plates and facilities were available in 1914. Original stock from a number of private banks were used, one of the Banks being The National Bank of Australasia, whose form is used for the £1 Superscribe we offer. This bank was founded in Melbourne in 1857 and is now part of the National Australia Bank. Perhaps due to the complexity of the 1910 Superscribe issues they are not included in McDonalds, however, Renniks does provide quite detailed and interesting reading. Considering that these notes are the first official issues of the new Commonwealth Government they should be included in all Predecimal listings and collections. Meanwhile, astute buyers can pick up these very scarce and important issues for relatively modest sums. Rest assured, that when they finally appear in catalogues like McDonalds, their price will rise dramatically. This example has excellent colour and nice body. It has very good eye appeal. There are a few edge tears which is typical for this issue as the paper used was not of the standard of later issues. Over the last couple of years there have been very few of these important notes on the market. A great opportunity to obtain what is, in reality, Australia’s first Commonwealth banknote issue.

2011 Silver Proof Ram’s Head $1 with ‘C’ Mintmark Along with the bounding kangaroo on the Halfpenny and Penny, the Ram’s Head reverse design from the silver predecimal shilling could be considered Australia’s most iconic coin design. The design was used from 1938 until the last issue in 1963. The original design was modelled on a grand champion Merino from the annual Sydney Sheep show in 1932. This ram was considered to be unmatched in the position of its head and horns. Named Uardry 0.1 after its home station, it became known as the ‘Shilling Ram’ and represented Australia’s growing wool industry. The dignified Merino ram represents Australia’s reliance on primary industry through its economic history. The Royal Australia Mint’s Silver Proof $1 for 2011 features this classic design as it appeared on the shilling. The coin is presented in a plush case with coloured outer box featuring a candy striped theme reminiscent of the shearer’s clothing featured in the famous 1890 Tom Roberts painting ‘Shearing the Rams’. Only 12,500 coins will be struck. Available at the Official Issue Price of
