Wildlife in Need 2011 Giant Panda Silver Proof The first release in the Wildlife in Need series is the Giant Panda. The Giant Panda is a peaceful, bamboo-eating member of the bear family native to China. It is easily recognized by the large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. Known for its solitary nature, the Giant Panda has an acute sense of smell and can grow up to five feet in height. They have steadily lost their forest habitat to China’s expanding human population. These striking animals are now confined to fragmented forest patches high in the mountains of south western China.

Mintage just 5,000 Coins!

The coin’s reverse features an adult Giant Panda and cub in colour, against a backdrop of bamboo forest and a mountain. The lower reverse comprises a struck design showing a pair of supporting hands with a bamboo motif incorporated into the design. Struck by the Perth Mint, each coin is presented in a plush presentation case with certificate and colourful box. The series is sure to prove enormously popular with its tiny mintage of just 5,000 coins. A donation of $1.99 per coin will be made to World Wildlife Fund - Australia for each coin sold.

The Price of Silver

has skyrocketed over the last twelve months. It was not long ago that it was under $20.00 an ounce. As we write this issue of Money Matters it is $40.60 an ounce! We have read articles suggesting that this is only the start of silver’s boom. For the collector this means a unavoidable and substantial increase in the price of new issues. It also means that many back issues represent tremendous values at current prices. Make sure you take a look at our website, you will find many bargains that do not reflect the current price of silver.

GALLIPOLI - Famous Battles in Australian History $1 The first release in this outstanding series honours the Australian diggers of the First World War. The Gallipoli or Dardanelles Campaign took place in the Ottoman Empire between April 1915 and January 1916. The operations consisted of a joint British and French mission to capture the capital of Istanbul and secure a sea route to Russia. On 25 April, at approximately 4.15am on a still spring night, with the sea mist rising, members of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) landed at Gallipoli together with troops from New Zealand, Britain, and France. It was shortly after this landing that the high command realised that the men had disembarked in the wrong position. Instead of facing the friendly topography south of Anzac Cove, they faced the precipitous area of the north. ntage Inhospitable terrain, miserable conditions and horrendous casualties were characteristic of the campaign, which ended with the withdrawal of allied troops. For the Turkish people, Gallipoli was a defining moment in their history. Likewise, the Gallipoli campaign resonated profoundly among Australians. The campaign marked the first major battle undertaken by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) and is considered a landmark in the development of the Australian identity.

Black Bart Pirate Dollar This seafaring series on pirates is proving popular plunder for young collectors. The fourth coin features Black Bart (Bartholomew Roberts) who was the most notorious pirate of his era. Born in Wales in 1682, Roberts went to sea at the age of 13 and after a poorly-paid career as a seaman he converted to piracy. Famous for his navigational skills, Black Bart plundered shipping relentlessly off West Africa, South America, Newfoundland and in the Caribbean, reportedly capturing over 400 ships! Black Bart made a gallant figure; he wore silk waistcoats, a red feather in his hat, a gold chain with a diamond cross hanging from it, a sword in one hand and two pairs of pistols slung over his shoulders. Unlike other pirates, however, Roberts preferred the taste of tea to rum!

They were produced irregularly and in very small quantities. This example is dated 1934, one of the last dates before George V was succeeded by his son, George VI. It has been slabbed by PCGS as PR64BN. Catalogues $75,000.00 in McDonalds.

Very Rare 1953 Proof Halfpenny Upon the death of King George VI in 1952 Queen Elizabeth II became ruler of the British Empire. Her Coronation was in June 1953 and new coins were designed and issued for Australia. In addition to the regular circulating coins a tiny number of Proofs were struck. There are no original records that I know of but it is generally considered that the mintage was just over 10 pieces. The 1953 Proofs are of particular importance as they are the first year of issue for the new coin types of Elizabeth II. We have only been able to trace one other example of this coin offered in the fifteen years which attests to its great rarity. It is certainly the first example we have offered. McDonald catalogue value is $45,000.00. Early Predecimal Proofs have been outstanding performers and this rare coin would be a great addition to anyone's portfolio.

2011 Australia Remembers - War Historians 20 Cents The Australia Remembers series recognises those who made history beyond the battlefields. In 2011 it celebrates Australian war correspondents that have shaped our perception of conflicts since the Boer War. C.E.W. Bean, chronicler of Gallipoli and founder of the Australian War Memorial; and Damien Parer, whose memorable images from the Kokoda track preceded his death in the line of duty; exemplify an honourable occupation distinguished by bravery and integrity. Based on an image from the Australian War Memorial of an Australian official photographer, standing with tripod and camera on a British Mark V tank, the advance of Australian troops through the Hindenburg Line is recorded. The coin is presented in the same card format as the Australian Service Nurses and Lost Soldiers of Fromelles coins. There is a brief description of the work done by these brave Australians and the contribution they made to Australian war history on the card.

$6.95

2009 Australian Service Nurses 20 Cents Coin One in the Australia Remembers Series pays tribute to Australian Service Nurses. The 20 cent coin design perfectly captures a nurse in her personal effort to bring comfort and assistance to a wounded “Aussie Digger, whilst upholding the highest traditions of the nursing fraternity. Presented in an illustrated holder.

$16.95

2010 Lost Soldiers of Fromelles 20 Cents The second coin in the series commemorates the Lost Soldiers of Fromelles. Known as Australia’s bloodiest day, during the 1916 Battle of Fromelles the 5th Division suffered 5533 casualties. There was speculation for many years regarding the existence of an unmarked and forgotten mass grave near Fromelles, containing the remains of Allied soldiers killed during the battle and subsequently buried by the Germans. The 20 Cent coin design is based on the Cobbers Statue which stands in Fromelles. Presented in an illustrated holder.

Submarines of the World Only

$350.00 the Set

The 20th century saw the development of the submarine as a potent and affective military weapon. The harnassing of nuclear power enabled submarines to stay submerged for months and travel virtually unseen across the globe. This Silver Proof Set from Fiji features four of the most

famous modern submarines. Each coin is struck in 99.9% Pure Silver and an unusual 45mm x 31mm oval shape. The packaging of this set is sensational! The four coins are presented in a replica submarine case along with a colourful outer box and certificate of authenticity.

BRITISH VANGUARD The Vanguard class are the Royal Navy’s current nuclear ballistic miss le submarines, each armed with up to 16 trident II submarine – launched ballistic missiles. The class was introduced in 1994 as part of the UK governments Trident nuclear program. This class includes four boats Vanguard, Victorious, Vigilant and Vengeance, all built at Barrow-inFurness by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd between 1986 and 1999. The image on the coin shows HMS Vanguard leaving its base in Glasgow.

FRENCH TRIOMPHANT The Triomphant class of strategic missile submarines of the French navy are currently being introduced into service to provide the sea based component of the French ‘force de frappe’ (nuclear deterrent). On the 3rd/4th February 2009 it was reported that the Triomphant collided with the Royal Navy submarine Vanguard. The French Navy plan to operate a force of four ships of which two are on patrol at any one time. The image on the coin shows the Le Triomphant leaving the french naval base located at Ile Longue.

UNITED STATES OHIO The Ohio class is named after the lead submarine of this class, USS Ohio. The 14 Trident II SSBN’s together carry around fifty percent of the total U.S. Strategic warhead inventory. The Ohio class is the largest type of submarine ever constructed for the U.S. Navy and are second to the Russian Typhoon class. The image of the coin shows the USS Ohio leaving its port in Hawaii.

RUSSIAN TYPHOON Typhoon class submarine is a type of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine deployed by the Soviet Navy in the 1980s. With a maximum displacement of 26,000 tonnes, Typhoons are the largest class of submarine ever built. Soviet doctrine for these vessels was to have them attack North America while submerged under the Arctic Circle, avoiding the traversal of the GIUK gap to remain safe from enemy attack submarines and anti-submarine forces. The image on the coins shows the Typhoon Submarine in North Arctic Region.
